This Easy DIY Makeup Brush Roll Is Essential For Travel

I’m so picky about my travel makeup cases. I hate wasted space, so I want to make sure that I’m taking the minimum amount of makeup and brushes that I need in order to keep my luggage to a minimum. The best way to make sure that I get exactly what I want is to DIY my makeup storage, of course.

To make this DIY makeup brush roll I utilize a purchased napkin, keeping the effort and sewing to a minimum, since all edges are finished already! This is my essential travel accessory. It’s is a cinch to whip up to organize your travel makeup needs .  These would make easy, personalized bridesmaids’ gifts, too.

• 18″x18″ Napkin
• 24″ of 3/4″ wide grosgrain ribbon
• Sewing machine

Step 1: Using your brushes as a guide, flip up a side of the napkin so that your brush handles will be covered

Step 2: Pin in place on each side and sew up the side, using the existing stitching as a guide.  Sew both sides

Step 3: Start running a stitch down the folded side of the napkin, creating separate little compartments for each brush.  The distance between each line will depend on your brush sizes.

TIP***A general width for a powder or blush brush is 1.5″.  The eye shadow/contour brushes are a about 3/4″-7/8″ wide.

Step 4: Fold the top over so your brushes will be covered.  Press the fold.

Step 5: Find the center of your ribbon

Step 6: Pin the ribbon on the front of the roll on the opposite side of the newly stitched rows.  Sew it on about an inch from the edge.

Step 7: Place your brushes in their compartments and roll them up

Step 8: Tie your ribbon and away you go!

Enjoy! You can also make compartments for your mascara and eyeliners too!

DIY Makeup Brush Roll - For Travel or Organization

This DIY makeup brush roll bag is easy to create. Great for a beginner sewing project to give as a gift or keep for yourself.

Here's another fun easy beginner sewing project that helps organize your makeup brushes and keeps them safe for travel.

DIY Makeup Brush Roll

• Coordinating fabric in two different prints
• Ribbon or seam binding for the ties  - Approx. 2 feet
• Coordinating thread
• Sewing Machine

I used two different fabrics that went well together. One pattern for the main pieces and a different pattern for the pocket piece. However, you could use the same fabric for all three of the pieces.

Start with the pocket piece and press 1/4 inch of the top edge.

Topstitch in place.

Next, line up the pieces as shown above matching raw edges. The pocket piece should lay on the back piece right side up, on top of the right side of the bottom piece (see above). Then place the second main piece right side down facing the right side of the pocket piece and back.

Fold the ribbon or seam binding in half and place it inside just above the pocket as shown above. Sew around all edges leaving a 2 inch opening for turning, just above the ribbon.

Trim edges and cut corners.

Next, turn the makeup brush roll right side out.

Press and topstitch around sides. Then sew a line of stitching from the bottom to the top at several intervals creating pockets for the brushes.  If you want you can use pins to determine where your sewing lines will be. Make them all the same width or vary the widths to hold different size brushes. 

To close the makeup brush roll, start at the end opposite the ties. Roll inward and when you get to the other side pull one of the ribbons around and tie for a nice and neat package.

Okay - I think you've convinced me to finally get a small sewing machine so I can make neat projects like these. I could make one for my watercolor brushes and would be so handy also takes up less space to store. Pinning for a summer project - love it...

Thanks Carole. It would work great for your painting brushes too. Of course you can always hand stitch or use a fusible iron-on webbing to create some of the projects. Then again it might be fun to try and new hobby.
