Campground review: lion country safari koa.

lion country safari camping reviews

Have you ever heard of a campground where you can hear the lions roaring from your campsite?  No, I am not talking about an African safari, this campground exists right in Loxahatchee, Florida.  Lion Country Safari KOA has an onsite zoo where you and your family can have a weekend full of fun!  Let me share our experience:

The Campground

While this campground is a typical RV PArk, with little shade, the campsites are slightly larger than your normal KOA campground and the camp hosts made sure to space out campers so that there was an empty site between campers on non-busy stays.  The onsite laundry facility had 10 washers and 10 dryers, which made doing laundry for a large family quick and convenient.  The camp store, pool, dog park, and playground made our stay even more pleasant.

Lion Country Safari

Of course, the highlight of this RV park was the zoo was is located onsite.  However, there is an additional fee to enter.  Due to how large the zoo is and the that there is a safari feature, you must drive to the zoo from your campsite.  The tour starts with a self-guided 4-mile safari where animals can come right up to your vehicle!  The safari is divided into 7 habitats where you can see animals like rhinos, emu, zebra, alpaca, and of course lions!  There is an online audio tour that will guide you through the habitats and give you facts about the animals you are seeing, which can make it a great educational experience.

Adventure Park

Once the safari is complete, you can park your vehicle and enter the adventure park which includes even more attractions such as amusement rides, a splash park, and a petting zoo, which are all included in the price of your ticket.  Our first stop after the safari ride was walking through the zoo and learning about the other animals on site some of our favorites included:

There were also animal encounters where you can pay just a few dollars for the food to feed giraffes and birds which was an experience our kids will never forget.

Attractions

In addition to the animal encounters, there were several rides and activities to do.  The carousel and elephant ride was open while we there and the kids were able to ride them several times with no wait.  There was also a mini-golf course, a train ride, and a mining station which were not open when we visited on a weekday in November.  The kid’s favorite part was of course the water park which we saved until the end of our visit and stayed there until closing.  There were 2 different splash pads, Safari Falls & Safari Splashground.  The larger waterslides were only open on the weekends.

I felt the value of Lion Country Safari was good considering everything that was included in the price of the ticket.  Once you were in the park, there was very little you needed to pay extra for.  I do suggest packing your own snacks and lunch if you are on a budget. The cafe options were pricey although the food was of much higher quality than that of a normal cafeteria-style restaurant  As you can tell we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.  If you are in the area for a longer time, you can check out the offerings in the surrounding West Palm Beach area.  Need an RV Rental to travel to this amazing campground?  Check out our availability here

Hurricane Ian Escape

The campground staff was great: while going from 15% to 100% occupancy in 24 hours, they still kept up the cleanliness support, and friendliness. It was a great experience in a trying time like evacuating for a hurricane. We did hear the lions from our campsite. Sites were decent sized. Some were gravel, most weren't.

Mosquito Haven

When we were pulling in we noticed a train of 7-8 RV’s and trailers leaving. Didn’t think much of it. Went ahead and checked in, got to our camping site, etc. That’s when we noticed that it was literally swarming with mosquitos. Pulled out 3 thermacells but the swarms were so bad they didn’t even touch it. Couldn’t even open the trailer door for a split second without 10 mosquitos flying in. Ended up packing up and leaving within the hour and getting a nearby hotel for the night. Manager refused a refund, and suggested we go to John Prince Park in the future. Have never had such a terrible experience with KOA in the past. 0 stars if I could.

Great Location

First of all, this was a great location to visit the lion country safari. We stayed in a tent site.

Pros: The facilities were well kept and nice enough for a campground. People were not too noisy. The lions were plenty noisy, and it was so cool to hear them in the morning!

Cons: There was no privacy whatsoever between sites and the sites were very close together. The lampposts were plentiful and bright which isn't so great when sleeping in a tent. Also, no fire rings.

5 summer months

So, we were here a bit long term in the summer. Staying here in the summer is as bad as being in Vermont in winter. You need a reason to be there and sadly we did. First off, waking up to lions roaring and bonobos scream in the morning was freaking amazing! I will treasure this memory for the rest of my life. The facilities are aging but are clean. The ladies in the front office were awesome and accommodating. We purchased a new RV while there and they had no issues moving us and making sure we were good with moving up from a 30 Amp to a 50 Amp site. At $99/night it is expensive and by not having the facilities of a KOA Holiday and being so far away from the Highway as a KOA Journey I can't give it 5 stars but, it is damn close.

Nice Park, Right next to safari park

Great location near the Safari park with discounted tickets available. I recommend staying here if you are going to the Safari Park and need a place to stay. Big Rig friendly with nice pull through sites and a wilderness feel that I enjoyed. :)

Real Lion Alarm Clock

We tent camped here. Site small and sandy but location is the key to this KOA. Right next to Lion Country Safari. We are used to hearing birds and frogs when we camp, but here it is lions...and other noises I was not able to identify. Weather great to explore park in late Winter. Kids loved it and we will be back!

Great family campground

This campground that sits just outside of the only drive through animal safari with over 1,000 different types of animals, is great for families to enjoy. This has all the amenities as a typical KOA campground except you get a bonus by hearing the Lions roar in the morning. The campground is gated during evening hours with the gate closing at 10:00 pm, so you will need to get a gate key card with a $20.00 deposit which will be refunded when you turn the key back at the end of your stay. The staff are very friendly and the campground is very clean. They also do a great job with abiding by the CDC guidelines for Covid-19. The Raccoons like to come out in the evening, so make sure you pick up you garbage at night. The rabbits were having fun playing in the primitive camping area every evening and early morning hours. They offer cabin and platform tent rentals for slightly more than a tent site. There are many seasonal campers from the North along with weekend campers trying to escape the everyday stress in their lives. We live 1 hour south of this campground but we will definitely be going back fir weekend trips.

Great Family Campsite

Very nice KOA , clean well presented , friendly staff. The lions waking you up in the morning is really pretty cool. LOTS of local channels and good internet. It's pretty far from most everything but its really the only game in town. Very peaceful and quite. Discount tickets to Lion Country Safari which is next to campground.

Best places to see wild lions in Africa

Lions

Aptly named the ‘King of Beasts’, lions are an iconic African wildlife species and are often high up on many travellers’ list of things to see when visiting Africa.

However, despite their popularity with tourists, they are not as common as one might imagine, and sightings are never guaranteed. A century ago there were as many as 200,000 wild lions in Africa, but the current estimate is of 20,000 lions, over 20% of their former range. Read more about lions here: The African Lion

For the best chance of seeing lions in the wild, it would be advisable to head to one of Africa’s ‘lion hotspots’.

Here are a few of the top places to see wild lions in Africa:

1. mara-serengeti ecosystem.

Stretching over 24,000 km² from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is home to one of the highest densities of lions in the world.

Within this area, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania boasts the oldest lion research project in Africa, The Serengeti Lion Project, which has been operating for nearly 50 years. In addition, expect good lion encounters in the Ngorongoro Crater , on the fringes of the Serengeti ecosystem. Outside of the Serengeti area, another excellent place in Tanzania to see lions is the remote Ruaha National Park . This arid, baobab-infested safari paradise offers remote safaris for the intrepid explorer.

Across the border in Kenya, the wide-open savannah plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve make for excellent lion viewing of large prides that are accustomed to tourist vehicles. The Mara lions have been made famous by the popular BBC TV series, Big Cat Diaries .

2. Northern Botswana

From dry savannahs to lush wetlands, northern Botswana has it all, and lions abound in this vast wild wilderness. These lions have adapted to their varied environments and have a wide range of prey species, from elephants and hippos to buffaloes and impala. And in the harsh dry winters when water is scarce, lions even compete with crocodiles to scavenge on rotting carcasses. Okavango Delta lions swim between islands and negotiate channels and floodplains during the annual flood season (June to August) in search of prey.

The Okavango Delta (and Moremi Game Reserve) hosts the largest lion population in the world, but also expect to see lions in the adjoining Chobe, Savute, Linyanti and Khwai areas in the unfenced wilderness of northern Botswana. In fact, further south in Botswana, the Kalahari and Tuli also host good lion populations.

Best places to see wild lions in Africa

3. Greater Kruger & Kruger National Park

The Greater Kruger is South Africa’s premier wildlife destination and is home to the majority of the country’s wild lions. The Kruger National Park is the size of Wales and is made larger because of unfenced western borders with various private game reserves, including Klaserie, Sabi Sand. Thornybush and Timbavati (famous for its naturally occurring population of white lions) – collectively known as the ‘Greater Kruger’.

Lions occur in all areas of the park, but they can be tough to find in the more remote northern areas. The large open plains of the central areas, and prey density further south, mean that more lions are seen in these areas.

4. Northern Namibia

Namibia’s lion population is spread across the northern reaches of this arid country, with Etosha National Park hosting the most easily accessible population. Etosha lions are best viewed in the dry winter months, and the best strategy to view them is to park at one of many waterholes and wait for them to come to you.

Perhaps the most fascinating Namibian lions are the desert-adapted lions , which occur in the remote Kaokoland/Damaraland region of the northwest, an area of sand dunes and sparse vegetation, wedged between Etosha and the barren Skeleton Coast. These formidable lions eke out a living despite the harsh landscape, low prey density and conflicts with farmers.

The best time to view the desert-adapted lions is during the dry winter season (June to October). During this time, they can be found hunting around the sparse water sources or lazing about in the open, soaking up the morning sun.

Africa Geographic Travel

5. Luangwa Valley, Zambia

Zambia’s Luangwa Valley hosts the majority of that country’s lion population.

The Luangwa Valley is the birthplace of African walking safaris – a very special wildlife experience for any safari enthusiast. Encountering wild lions whilst on foot with an experienced guide is one of Africa’s quintessential safari experiences.

South Luangwa National Park, particularly, offers incredible lion viewing opportunities, with frequent sightings of large prides of up to 30 lions. The smaller, more remote North Luangwa also offers excellent lion sightings, for the more intrepid traveller.

Elsewhere in Zambia, Kafue National Park is a good place to see lions, particularly in the Busanga Plains area – a vast open floodplain system in the north of the park.

6. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Hwange hosts a large population of lions and prey species – including large herds of buffalo, a favourite item on the menu. Zimbabwe’s largest national park offers excellent lion habitat – including grass plains, deciduous woodlands and thorn savannah, and the network of waterholes provides good positioning for tourists wishing to experience a lion kill. Just a short drive from Victoria Falls, Hwange is a convenient add-on to your southern African safari.
