It has been an absolute age since Hot Water Music have played a headline show Down Under (since 2010, in fact), so it’s only fitting that the revered band are returning to celebrate their 30th anniversary with us.

Three decades and 10 albums in, Hot Water Music stands firmly as an enduring pillar of punk rock. Since ‘94, their pioneering sound has taken them from sweaty clubs in their hometown of Gainesville, Florida, to massive venues worldwide countless times over. Their big-hearted anthems, trusty chords and trademark scruffy vocals have soundtracked the lives of many, whilst continuing to have an undeniable influence on punk and hardcore at large.

Supporting them in Australia will be Canadian punk rockers The Flatliners. Fronted by Hot Water Music guitarist/vocalist Chris Cresswell, The Flatliners’ career is a testament to perseverance and dedication. For over two decades, the band has hammered out the kilometres, touring non-stop with a veritable who’s who of the genre while dropping a swag of acclaimed records along the way.

It’s not often either of these bands are in our backyard, so round up your mates and snap up tickets quickly before they sell out.

The Flatliners are an amazing hard working band. They always just want everyone to have a great and safe time. They played some great songs. I missed midnight though. I still had a blast and will be so happy to see them again anytime.

Great show! The venue was small but the sound was amazing and you were able to get close to the stage. We even saw The Flatliners hanging out upstairs after the show.

Ontario punk outfit Flatliners found their footing on the live circuit as they gigged the small rooms and worked their way up yet due to their formation in the mid-00s they were helped through the power of the internet and blogs. The group found support from a number of publications and the gigs were suddenly selling out faster and venues were being upgraded to deal with the demand. Although their intense punk sounds suited small places where Chris Cresswell could literally scream into the face of his followers the group handled the transition well.

The riffs got bigger, the drums louder and the fan chanting even louder still. They welcome in the newcomers with open arms whilst they greet the old timers with a wry smile and noticeable affection. Running through a blistering setlist lifted tracks from all four of the group's albums, the fans are right behind them all evening fuelling the energy as they scream lyrics between each other and the band. Moshing breaks out during 'Count Your Bruises' and everything seems to be on the brink of sheer destruction for 'Tail Feathers' before the musicians wrestle it from the brink and bring it home in a big way.

Hot Water Music Fulfill their VOWS with First Headline Australian Tour after 14 years

Posted on July 31, 2024 by Will Oakeshott

the flatliners australia tour

“ I am ready. To find my way, to find my way to you .” Chuck Ragan , Hot Water Music , ‘After The Impossible’ , VOWS 2024.

This heartfelt statement soulfully serenaded by Chuck Ragan (and featuring Alexisonfire / City & Colour ’s Dallas Green ) is featured on Hot Water Music ’s third single ‘After The Impossible’ from their awe-inspiring 10 th album VOWS released in May this year. As if fulfilling their own lyrical prophecy, the Floridian Southern Gospel punk rockers have just announced their long-awaited headline return to Australian shores after a 14-year absence!

With an astonishing 30-year career including: 10 full-length records and an almost countless number of EPs, Split and Single releases, Hot Water Music are undeniably one of the most treasured outfits in the post-hardcore and gruff punk universe. With guitarist/vocalist Chuck Ragan ’s unique husky croon exhilarating the punk and hardcore enthusiasts from around the world, backed by guitarist/vocalist Chris Wollard ’s rocking roar and The Flatliners ’ Chris Cresswell ’s divine harmonies, the anthems are incredibly irresistible. The entire package is enhanced by Jason Black ’s dazzling bass lines and George Rebelo ’s riveting drumming and thankfully, both Australia and New Zealand will have the honour of witnessing this extravaganza in February 2025!

Chris Cresswell will be playing double duties for the tour, with the punk loving Canucks The Flatliners making their way down under for the first time since 2018 as the main support. Having sensationally shook audiences worldwide for over 20 years and constantly outdoing themselves with each LP, the quartet will assuredly and amazingly attack the crowds with pleasure on this Australian run.

The tour begins in Wellington and then navigates its way through Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Torquay comprising of an astonishing 10 shows in 11 days! As Jason Black (bass) excitedly expresses:  “WE COULD NOT BE MORE STOKED to get back to Australia and New Zealand! Sorry for all the caps, but it’s been 14 years since we’ve done any proper club shows down there, so we’re really excited. We promise it won’t be so long between this run and the next one.”

We are “ Ready ” too Hot Water Music !

Hot Water Music Announce 2025 Australian Tour

By David James Young

Hot Water Music have announced their return to Australia, undertaking an eight-date run of the country in February 2025. It will mark their first tour locally in nearly seven years, having last visited in March 2018 to perform at the inaugural Australian iteration of Download in addition to co-headlining shows with NOFX . The full list of the band’s 2025 tour dates, as well as ticketing information, can be found below.

“We could not be more stoked to get back to Australia and New Zealand,” said bassist Jason Black in a press statement announcing the tour. “It’s been 14 years since we’ve done any proper club shows down there, so we’re really excited. We promise it won’t be so long between this run and the next one.”

Indeed, the band will pre-empt their Australian visit with two shows in New Zealand: One at Wellington’s Valhallla Tavern and another at Auckland’s Double Whammy. Tickets for both of the band’s Aotearoan shows are on sale now and can be purchased via Under The Radar .

US conservative Candace Owens is set to tour Australia. Can the government stop her?

American conservative author and influencer Candace Owens has amassed millions of followers on YouTube and X for her controversial views. These include suggesting the Holocaust was “ethnic cleansing that almost took place”. She also recently said men are being “socially engineered to be gay” and rejected that people can be transgender.

Owens is due to deliver talks in five cities across Australia in November 2024. But Australian Jewish groups and others are calling on Immigration Minister Tony Burke to deny her an entry visa. In the United States, the Anti-Defamation League has also previously outlined its concerns about her antisemitic messaging.

In response, Owens’ promoters have said she’s “never incited violence or been cancelled by social media for breaching community standard, and everything she has said has been in her capacity as a commentator and as an author”.

While it’s unclear if Owens has applied for a visa yet, what can the federal government do in cases like these?

It’s up to the minister

Australia’s federal government has discretion over which non-citizens can enter the country. Other than the specific rights of those seeking protection under international law, the capacity of a non-citizen to enter Australia is a privilege, not a right.

This is not a new issue. Australia has previously banned conspiracy theorists and far-right figures from entering the country. It’s also not exclusive to Australia, with other countries facing similar decisions.

In addition to decisions the department can make about granting visas, the immigration minister has the overarching discretion to decline or approve visas on character grounds .

Decisions of departments to grant or decline a visa can be reviewed by tribunal and courts. However, exercises of ministerial discretion to decline, cancel or grant visas are not reviewable. In short, Owens cannot seek judicial review of a decision of the minister to decline her a visa, should that happen.

On what grounds?

There are several grounds on which a minister can decline a visa. These include someone’s criminal record, concerns in relation to domestic violence, or concerns about terrorist activity. Overall, the minister is to consider the best interests of the Australian community.

In addition, and relevant to the case of Owens, another factor the minister can consider is the risk of vilification of a segment of the community, including conduct likely to be incompatible with the smooth operation of a multicultural society.

There are reports of a marked rise in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents in Australia since October 2023.

In that context, it is reasonable to be concerned that someone with a history of antisemitism, for example, may contribute to a destabilisation of our social cohesion at a time when we need to be protecting it.

Threats to social cohesion are national security risks for many reasons, not least because this can lead to the normalisation of provocative and inflammatory behaviour. In turn, this has the potential to trigger an increase in acts of politically motivated violence, including terrorism.

In short, how we get along with each other in public matters in minimising the risk of extremists feeling emboldened to attack other members of our community violently. How we speak about each other in a public forum matters for minimising radicalisation. The Australia Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has warned of this.

What about free speech?

As noted above, while Owens can appeal a decision on a visa made by the department, a court or tribunal cannot review an act of ministerial discretion.

However, ministers are not always immune to political pressure and decisions to cancel visas of high profile would-be visitors are not without public controversy.

Often this controversy centres on a difference of opinion on where the outer boundaries of the principles of free speech begin and end. Who gets to decide those boundaries?

A marketplace of free-flowing ideas is an important element of a representative democracy. There are also times when allowing for the airing of problematic ideas allows for them to be refuted in a way that is edifying for the community.

However, the right to free speech is not absolute, because it has to accommodate other rights. In an era of misinformation and disinformation and the rise of extremist ideas propagated online, the principles of free speech must be balanced alongside the imperative to keep our communities safe.

A man in a suit and tie walks in parliament house

There is also a need to protect the right of all members of our community to be free from racial vilification, for example.

Importantly, there is no absolute right to free speech in the Australian Constitution. However, the Constitution does contain an “implied freedom of political communication” .

That freedom can be burdened for legitimate purposes as long as the measures taken are proportionate to the risk. Regulating hate speech is an example of a legitimate public purpose.

The means by which lawmakers can achieve that purpose that are not unlimited, but as long as regulation remains proportionate, limitations of political communication are permitted by the Australian Constitution.

The big picture

Ministerial discretion is an important tool in visa decision-making, but it is open to abuse.

Ultimately, though, there are checks and balances because ministers are accountable to the parliament (and to the National Anti-Corruption Commission). And parliament is accountable to the electorate.

But more broadly, words have power, particularly in the public domain. With great power comes great responsibility. That includes minimising hate.
