Breakdancing, lacrosse, flag football and more: which sports are in for la 2028.

GET LOCAL BREAKING NEWS ALERTS

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

As the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games have wrapped, fans are reminiscing on their favorite moments. One memorable moment was when Australian breakdancer Raygun took the stage and went viral on social media.

Unfortunately for many fans, breakdancing will not return for the Los Angeles 2028 Games — this decision was made before this summer's Olympics began. USA Today says it's unlikely the sport, known as breaking in the Olympics, will ever return to the Games.

Other newly-added sports like surfing and skateboarding (both introduced in the Tokyo 2020 games) have proven to be popular additions to the Olympics and will be a part of LA 2028.

Five more new sports will be added to the Olympic program in LA – flag football, baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse and squash.

The five have been chosen since they are “in line with the American sports culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the world while bringing international sports to the United States,” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a statement released in October 2023. “Their inclusion will allow the Olympic Movement to engage with new athlete and fan communities in the US and globally,” he added.

It will mark a first-ever Olympic appearance for flag football – a version of American football in which players remove flags from their opponents’ belt instead of tackling them – and squash, which has spent years lobbying to be included in the Games.

Cricket was played at the Paris Olympics in 1900, while lacrosse featured at St. Louis in 1904 and London in 1908, but both have fallen out of the Olympic program since then. Baseball and softball have floated in and out of the Olympics, most recently featuring in Tokyo 202

New events, as well as sports, have been added to the Olympic program, too. Coastal rowing will see athletes sprint across the sand before using specialized boats to navigate through waves and seek to cross the finish line first.

Which sports are leaving the Olympics?

Breaking isn't the only sport that won't be making a comeback.

Meanwhile, boxing has not yet been officially included in the Olympic program due to the IOC’s decision in June 2023 to withdraw recognition of the International Boxing Association (IBA), the sport’s now-discredited governing body, following a years-long feud. Any decision regarding boxing’s future at the Olympics has been “put on hold,” the IOC said in October 2023.

The modern pentathlon – an event in which athletes traditionally compete in fencing, showjumping, a 200-meter freestyle swim and a laser run that combines running and shooting – will take on a new complexion in LA.

Showjumping will be replaced by obstacle racing, a decision that kept the sport in the Olympics, the IOC said in a statement, following a widespread outcry during Tokyo 2020 when Germany’s modern pentathlon coach, Kim Raisner, was disqualified for hitting a horse.

The final program of events will be finalized sometime between now and the first quarter of 2025, according to the IOC.

The 2024 Summer Olympics are about to end but Southern Californians might already be wondering how to buy tickets or work as volunteers when the Games come to their part of the world.

The short answer is to go to the LA28 organizing committee ’s website: la28.org .

Though it’s still early in the process, fans can sign up for updates on tickets, hospitality and volunteer opportunities. The site also includes a careers page , though there did not seem to be many job openings as of this week.

Paris held its first round of ticket sales about 18 months in advance. That could put L.A.’s initial offering sometime around February 2027.

As for volunteers, the 2024 Summer Games reportedly fielded more than 300,000 applications for 45,000 spots. People were selected from 155 countries.

Breaking made history in Paris. We'll probably never see it at Olympics again.

Portrait of Tom Schad

PARIS — Victor Montalvo became the first Olympic bronze medalist in the history of men's breaking Saturday night.

He knows he might also be the last.

The breaking competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics was years in the making and over in about 30 hours, bringing a brief flash of excitement and intrigue right at the end of the Games. And for breakers like Montalvo, who competes as B-boy Victor, it definitely felt different than other competitions − a bit more intense, and just more special. It felt like the sort of moment that, realistically, the Summer Olympics might never see again.

"It's just a win for all of us," Victor said. "I'm just super happy for breaking and hip-hop culture. We represented, and everyone loved it."

In a sport that borders on art, where friendships and personal beef serve as the backdrop to every battle, Victor said it felt Saturday night like all 16 men in the competition were working together.

2024 Paris Olympics: Follow USA TODAY’s coverage of the biggest names and stories of the Games.

There were Olympic medals at stake, and bragging rights, and maybe even endorsement deals and future financial opportunities. But it was telling that, at the end of the gold medal battle, B-boy Phil Wizard of Canada and B-boy Dany Dann of France put their arms around one another and walked toward the crowd with smiles on their faces.

Phil Wizard, whose legal name is Philip Kim, was soon introduced as the man who won gold. And Dany Dann, aka Danis Civil, took silver. But for both, it was mostly just about being there.

"For us, as of now, this is the one and only," Phil Wizard said. "So to be a part of history is truly incredible."

The International Olympic Committee added breaking, more commonly known as breakdancing, to the sports program in Paris because president Thomas Bach and his colleagues thought it would attract the younger, social-media savvy viewers that they were seeking. It also fit in with local organizers' broader goal of a more "urban" Olympic Games.

But even from the start, breaking was viewed as more of a novelty than a new sport with staying power.

A sport is usually not considered a "core" part of the Olympic program until it is part of at least three consecutive Games, which breaking will not be. Organizers for the next Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 had the ability to propose new sports they wanted to include in their Games and opted for flag football, cricket, lacrosse and squash over breaking − despite the dance's deep history in the United States, specifically the Bronx.

The breakers who competed Saturday night were well aware of this. It is unlikely that the sport is brought back to the Olympic stage, either at the 2032 Brisbane Games or beyond.

"I feel like we did our job," Victor said. "Everyone loved it. The crowd was going crazy. It's OK. We're not in 2028, but honestly, I (am) the first ever bronze medalist for breaking. So, that's an amazing thing to say."

Victor was first introduced to breaking by his father Victor Sr. and uncle Hector Bermudez , both of whom are former B-boys. When Victor Sr. told his son that he used to break, and Victor Jr. didn't believe him, the elder Victor got out his old gear, moved some furniture around in the living room and started doing headspins and windmills. Eight years later, Victor Jr. started breaking competitively.

As he moved up the ranks, from breaking at local cyphers to Red Bull's annual BC One event, Victor emerged as one of the best in the world at his craft, even winning two of the past three world championships. But the 30-year-old from Kissimmee, Florida, didn't seriously consider the possibility that breaking would be an Olympic sport until it actually was one. Everything he's experienced in Paris − the crowd at Place de la Concorde, the podium ceremony, the medal − was unexpected, which is maybe why he didn't seem the least bit fazed by not winning gold.

"I didn't get the gold, but I got the bronze," Victor said. "And we all represented hip-hop culture. Every competitor that was in there represented hip-hop and breaking.

"Hopefully a younger generation, more of the younger generation, starts dancing and gets into breaking. Because it’s amazing: You don’t need much for it, you know? You need a dance floor, self-expression and that’s about it."

On the stage Saturday night, there was plenty of bombast and braggadocio throughout the battles, which consisted of either two or three rounds and were critiqued by a panel of nine judges. But in the little moments after each battle, all of that melted away.

Phil Wizard went out of his way to talk about how, despite his new Olympic gold medal, he doesn't consider himself to be the best in the world.

“I can lose next week at another competition to anybody out there," Phil Wizard said. "It’s honestly just a big game of rock, paper, scissors – especially at this level."

Now, though, the 27-year-old from Vancouver will go down in history − just like Dany Dann and Victor and everyone who participated in the competition, or witnessed it, or even watched it on TV. It might not happen again.

"You will not forget this day!" one of the weekend's emcees, Max Oliveira, reminded the crowd Friday night during the women's competition. "Breaking at the Olympics, it's just incredible!"

As the gold-medal bout neared, Oliveira ratcheted up the excitement even further, proclaiming into the microphone that he never wanted the day to end. "Ever!" he said. "We want it to be infinite!"

But alas, it did end. And Olympic breaking is probably not far behind. No matter the television ratings or social-media reviews, the sport will probably be one-and-done at the Summer Games. But at least it made a splash.

Lacrosse Sixes at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028: Everything you need to know about the new sport at LA28

Germany vs Ireland | Women’s European Championship - Netanya

Lacrosse is one of five new sports set to feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games .

The IOC approved the inclusion of lacrosse sixes in LA28 last year, along with baseball/softball, flag football, T20 cricket and squash.

Lacrosse, originally known as 'stickball,' began as a cultural and spiritual practice among Indigenous North American communities. Far more than just a game, it often served as a way to resolve conflicts and prepare warriors for battle.

This ancient sport now returns to the global stage in the form of Lacrosse Sixes at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028, bringing its rich heritage and modern evolution to a worldwide audience.

This will be the third time lacrosse has been part of the Olympic program, but the first in more than a century, following its appearances in 1904 and 1908.

LA28 will spotlight the fast-paced lacrosse sixes format, a thrilling version of the sport designed for the modern era. World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern hailed this moment as a “seminal achievement” that will offer a “golden opportunity” for athletes to showcase their talents on the world’s biggest stage.

"After decades of hard work and dedication, lacrosse is back on the Olympic stage at LA28," Redfern said . "This is a pivotal moment for our sport, marking the start of a new era that will inspire future generations of lacrosse players worldwide.”

Lacrosse: Top things to know

When was lacrosse at the olympics.

Lacrosse debuted in St. Louis in 1904, where only three teams participated, all from Canada and the United States. Canada’s Winnipeg Shamrocks triumphed, winning the gold medal after defeating the United States, while another Canadian team, the Mohawk Indians, claimed bronze.

London 1908 saw lacrosse’s last Olympic medal event, with just a single match played between Canada and Great Britain. Held at the White City Stadium, Canada emerged victorious once again, defeating Great Britain 14-10 in a hard-fought contest.

Lacrosse then made three more appearances as a demonstration sport in Amsterdam in 1928 , Los Angeles in 1932 , and London in 1948 .

Since then, lacrosse has grown to become a global sport played in nearly 100 countries. LA28 will mark lacrosse’s comeback, this time with the fast-paced Sixes format taking center stage, in a lacrosse-loving country.

What is the lacrosse format for LA28?

For LA 2028, the format chosen is World Lacrosse Sixes, a streamlined version of the traditional game.

Played on a 70m x 36m pitch, Sixes is an exciting, high-tempo format that features six players per team, including a goalkeeper.

The game is divided into four eight-minute quarters, with a 30-second shot clock ensuring continuous action and quick transitions. Much like the rugby sevens , this version of lacrosse is designed to be accessible and entertaining, offering a fast-paced spectacle that is sure to appeal to both seasoned fans and newcomers

What are the lacrosse venues at LA28?

The lacrosse venues for LA28 are yet to be confirmed.

As part of its sustainability pledge , the LA Games are set to use 100 per cent existing and temporary venues for the Olympics.

What is the lacrosse schedule at LA28?

The schedule for the lacrosse will be finalised closer to the Games.

Canada and USA contest the women's lacrosse final at the 2022 World Games

Which nations are lacrosse sevens powerhouses?

Lacrosse has long been dominated by a few key nations, with the United States and Canada leading the charge in both men’s and women’s competitions. These two North American giants have a storied rivalry, with the United States boasting 11 men’s field lacrosse World Championships to Canada’s three. However, in the Sixes format, the balance of power is more even.

At the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, which featured the World Lacrosse Sixes format, Canada stunned the lacrosse world by defeating the United States in both the men’s and women’s finals, solidifying their place as a top contender in this fast-paced version of the sport. Canadian stars like Zach Currier and Dhane Smith shone brightly in the men’s competition, while veteran Dana Dobbie and rising star Aurora Cordingley led the women’s team to victory.

Australia is another nation to watch, especially in the women’s game. The Australians have a strong lacrosse tradition, having won two women’s field lacrosse World Championships in 1986 and 2005.

As lacrosse continues to grow globally, teams are beginning to make their mark. England , Japan , and the Iroquois Nationals are also becoming increasingly competitive, particularly in the Sixes format, which emphasizes speed, agility, and tactical innovation. The Thompson brothers —Lyle, Miles, and Jeremy—have become icons in the sport, known for their skill, creativity, and deep connection to lacrosse’s indigenous roots.

As the sport returns to the Olympics in 2028, the stage is set for these powerhouses—and potential new challengers—to vie for the ultimate prize: an Olympic gold medal in lacrosse Sixes.

Latto announces ‘sugar honey iced tea tour.’ get tickets today.

Latto sings onstage while wearing a cheetah print outfit.

We’ve got the tea.

Grammy-nominated rapper Latto just announced she’s heading out her ‘Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour’ with special guests and fellow Atlanta natives Mariah The Scientist and Karrahbooo this fall.

The 22-concert run, Latto’s first as a headliner, will make stops at arenas, amphitheaters, music halls, and auditoriums all over North America from October through December.

That includes a gig at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Thursday, Oct. 31, aka Halloween.

At all shows, fans can expect to hear the hits — think “Big Energy,” “Sunshine” and “Put It On Da Floor” — as well as cuts from Latto’s recently-released third studio album “Sugar Honey Iced Tea,” which features big names like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Ciara, Young Nudy, Hunxho and Teezo Touchdown among others.

“[Aesthetically], I’ve been pulling from Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Lil’ Kim,” she told Billboard in an interview. “[Musically], I’ve been pulling from Kelis, but obviously with a Southern hip-hop twist.”

If you want to hear the new record along with your favorites live, tickets are available for the show of your choosing as soon as today.

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming ‘Sugar Honey Iced Tea’ concerts on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, Aug. 16.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Latto tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Latto set list

On April 6, the 25-year-old rapper performed a short set in Cleveland. While her tour will likely feature more songs — as well as tunes from the new record — here’s what Latto took to the stage that day, courtesy of Set List FM :

01.) “Soufside” 02.) “Sunday Service” 03.) “It’s Givin” 04.) “He Say She Say” 05.) “Issa Party” 06.) “Muwop” 07.) “B—- From da Souf” 08.) “Peaches & Eggplants” 09.) “Put It On Da Floor” 10.) “Big Energy” 11.) “Sunshine”

Latto new music

On Aug. 13, Latto dropped her third studio album “Sugar Honey Iced Tea.”

Comprised of 22 tracks over two discs, the albums show off Latto’s range as a singer and MC– truth be told, she often switches between hitting high notes and rhyming at superhuman speed all in the same song.

Highlights include the sparse yet anthemic “Georgia Peach,” playful, bouncy “There She Go” and laid-back duet “Copper Cove” with Hunxho, which would make the perfect soundtrack to a club by the shore.

Don’t sleep on the no-holds-barred fury in “Liquor,” club-ready “Squeeze” featuring Megan Thee Stallion or the cinematic “Look What You Did” with Mariah The Scientist, either.

To hear for yourself, you can find “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” here .

Latto special guests

At all shows, Latto will be joined by a pair of high-profile special guests.

To make sure you’re familiar with their work, you can find each artist’s most-streamed song on Spotify below.
