kodachadri trek from kollur

Kodachadri trek is situated at a distance of 420 km from Bangalore in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. Being declared as the “Natural Heritage Site” by the Govt. of Karnataka, Kodachadri is the 10th highest peak in Karnataka and one among the famous Western Ghats treks . The other treks include Kumara Parvatha trek , Kudremukh trek , Tadiandmol trek etc.

Kodachadri Trekking Guide:

There are two trekking routes to the Kodachadri peak. One is from the Kattinahole through Hidlumane falls and another trekking route is through Santhosh hotel, Valur. Both of the trekking routes will be explained below.

Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane falls Kattinahole

If you want to attempt the Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane falls then you will have to start from the Kattinahole. There is no proper trail from the Kattinahole to the Hidlumane falls as it crosses farms, villages, grasslands, and uneven trails. However, there is a proper trail from Hidlumane Falls to the Kodachadri peak which joins the Kodachadri jeep trail until the peak

  • Kodachadri trek distance via Hidlumane falls: Around 10 Kms
  • Trekking time: Around 6 Hours (Including breaks & fun at the Hidlumane falls)

Kodachadri trek via Santhosh hotel, Valur.

The second route starts from Sampekette-Kollur-Nagara road. Just search on Google maps for Kodachadri Trek Trail, Nagodi, Karnataka  and it will land you there. From there, there is a direct trail to the peak.

  • Kodachadri trek distance via Santhosh hotel, Valur: Around 10 Kms
  • Trekking time: Around 7 Hours

Kodachadri Contact information:

  • Kodachadri temple priest: 09632847302
  • Rajendra (trek guide & accommodation): 09449145540
  • Santhosh Hotel: 08185290183/ 094838116911

Kodachadri Camping information & Permission:

You are not allowed to pitch the tent at the Kodachadri peak. By sunset, you will have to return to the Kodachadri Information bureau/ the PWD house where you can pitch your tent but only after asking their permission. Sometimes, they charge for camping also like rupees 150 per head.

The Kodachadri trek falls in the middle of Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary but you don’t need any permission for the trek of Kodachadri. But if you are planning to stay or camp peak of Kodachadri hills during the night then that is not allowed. You will need to plan your stay to nearby places like Kollur andKundapura.

Best time to visit

Just after the Monsoon ends or during the winter days are the best period from my personal understanding to visit Kodachadri trek. But some people also prefer to visit during monsoons and summers as the view is far more clearer as post-monsoon and winter you might encounter fog while trekking. If anyone wishes to enjoy some real challenges of trekking then do visit this place during the peak monsoon along with the right gears for the trek.

Things to Carry

The best thing about the Kodachadri trek is that it is just one day trek. So it is not required to carry too many things which will make the already difficult trek difficult. But please do carry the essentials mentioned below:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Identity Proof
  • Water (1 to 2 liters)
  • Packed Lunch
  • Extra Clothes
  • Light Snacks

Kodachadri Jeep Ride

There are two options for the Kodachadri jeep ride. One is from the Kattinahole side and another is from the Kollur side. Both of the options have been explained below:

Kodachadri Jeep ride detailsfrom Kattinahole:

  • Jeep ride cost: Rs. 2000-2500 rupees (negotiable)
  • Number of people: Maximum 8 people per Jeep
  • Shared price: 200-300 per head in a shared jeep
  • Jeep location: Main jeep stand
  • Jeep ride timings: 30 mins one way or one hour to and fro
  • Extra time given at the top: 2 Hours
  • Sunset point from the Jeep drop point at the top: 2 km (40 minutes walk)
  • Kodachadri Jeep Timing: starting 6 AM in the morning

By Jeep to Kodachadri from the Kollur town:

  • Booking entire jeep: Rs. 2000-2500 rupees (negotiable)
  • Forest department opening time: Kodachadri Jeep starts at 6 AM in the morning

Kodachadri HomeStay:

There are a lot of Homestay locations around Kodachadri hills. Even there are many other options to stay in the nearby towns around which Homestays are located. But it is important to choose where to stay and which homestay to live in. The best place for Homestay that I would like to recommend will be Kattinahole. There is a lot of options for the homestays around Kattinahole.

Here is a list of the Kodachadri homestays around Kattinahole:

1. Chitrakuta Homestay 2. Sri Ambika homestay

These two homestays are located in the area called Mathikai which is around 3 Kms from the Kattinahole Kodachadri Jeep stand from where you can get a jeep ride to the Kodachadri peak. There is another Homestay near Kattinahole Jeep stand which has got some of the best Google reviews is Kodachadri Pathalagere Homestay Or Resort . The best option would be to stay in the Kodachadri Pathalagere Homestay Or Resort.

How to reach Kodachadri from Bangalore?

Kodachadri is situated at a distance of around 420 km from Bangalore. If you are not going to Kodachadri through any other trekking organization but you are going on your own then you might have decided to drive there. The distance of 420 Km can be covered in around 8 hours from Bangalore to Kodachadri.

The Best Driving route from Bangalore to Kodachadri: Driving along with AH 47

This route includes driving along with AH 47 or the Bangalore-Pune highway most of the time. The route includes Tumkur, Sira, Chitradurga, and finally, you take a left from Davangere. The drive until Davangere is around 250 Kms which takes around four and a half hours. From Davangere, the rest of the distance is around 180 Km which takes around four hours because it lies in the Ghats road.

The Complete Guide To Kodachadri Trek

Kodachadri is located in Shimoga district and one of the most spoken-about trekking trails in Karnataka. Situated in the heart of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kodachadri trek offers trekkers an adventure, a charm, and an experience that will remain throughout your lifetime.

Kodachadri Trek takes you through a quaint village setting with paddy fields, thick forests, marvelous grasslands, and a waterfall that will make you go weak on your knees.

The rolling lush grasslands and hills surrounding the peak is a sight to behold.

To add on to these experiences, you get to visit a temple believed to be built thousands of years ago which is filled with a rich history. Apart from the mythology, imagine trekking to a place that has stories from the 7th AD! This is the place where the famous philosopher, theologian, Adi Shankara visited and meditated at the peak.

You don’t get treks that are filled with many stories and history on the western ghats trek of Karnataka.

With multiple approaches to the trek, anybody can go and do this trek on their own. It is a paradise for first-timers, intermediate and experienced trekking enthusiasts.

Just like you, we love trekking! And this is a trek we’ve documented in great detail to help you do it on your own. Drop-in comments if you need any help!

➤ Highlights from Kodachadri Trek

1. view of rolling green hills .

Kodachadri Trek is known for the expanse of beautiful lush green rolling hills. The hills are covered in lush greenery and spread as far as the eye can see. Situated at a height of 5,735 feet, the grasslands with the Shola forest emerging are something you go on the trek of Kodachadri.

The different shades of green vary from Parakeet green, Pine green, and Emerald green. Adding to the greenery, the drama and theatre of a combination of cloud and mist is a thrilling experience.

2. Waterfalls of Hidlumane

A cascade or a series of seven waterfalls is what makes up the Hidlumane Waterfalls. The gushing falls that you see right above your head, is a sight to wonder and something you don’t get to experience on other treks.

The cold water spouting down is something you must take a dip in or at least have your feet inside these waters.

3. Mythology, Legends and the Temple of Mookambika

Apart from trekkers, you see other tourists and pilgrims coming to the peak of Kodachadri. Built out of stones, it is said that the Goddess Mookambika fought and killed the demon Mookasura.

Situated at the peak, the temple is often covered with mist and fog during the morning and evenings.

Mookambika Temple-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

The temple is also dedicated to Adi Shankara who visited the peak, meditated here at the top of Kodachadri during the 7th AD.

4. Trekking in the dense Shola forests of Western Ghats

The Kodachadri trek takes you through some of the dense Shola forests of the Western Ghats. A sensational experience for any trekker who likes trekking through the thick canopy and the right exposure of trekking in a forest.

The Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary offers a wide variety of flora and fauna to explore.

➤  Trail Information

Kodachadri Trek can be accessed from three base villages. The trek can be done either from Nittur or Kattinahole or even from the Vallur side. If you are traveling in your own car to the base, then start your trek from the village of Kattinahole side. You have the option to join the trail at Hidlumane falls or even take the jeep track all the way to the Kodachadri Top (a less exciting option with a constant movement of jeeps on the mud trail)

Trekking from the Vallur side is comparatively easy through the forest section. But a major highlight of the Hidlumane Falls is something you would miss out on if you trek on this trail alone.

Head of DIY and Documentation Team

This documentation goes in detail of the trail from Nittur to the Kodachadri peak and ending your trek at the other base trail of Vallur. This way you won’t miss out on the Hidlumane waterfalls. You also get the experience of trekking through the thick forests of Vallur. We strongly suggest this option for you since you get to witness both sides of the trail and get a complete package of trekking to Kodachadri.

Route Map-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes

The trek can be divided into  four sections  over the course of two days

  • Nittur/Marakutaka to Last hut of Hidlumane
  • Last hut of Hidlumane to the PWD Guesthouse/Bhattara Mane via Hidlumane Falls
  • The final trek to the top with the temple
  • Descend through the trail on Vallur side

Section I:  Nittur/Marakutuka  to  Last hut of Hidlumane

Trek Distance:  6.20 km Trek Duration:  2 hours GPS coordinates of Marakutuka:  13°55’0.38″N  74°53’20.78″E GPS coordinates of the Last Hut of Hidlumane:  13°52’51.68″N 74°53’25.94″E

Start your trek early in the morning. If you have taken an overnight bus from Bangalore, you will reach Sigandoor bus stand or the Marakutuka bus stand on the next morning at around 7.15 am.

Sigandooru Cross-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

You can even get down one stop before at Nittur and walk towards Hotel Santosh to start your trek. This is about 1.2 km of walk on the road. Check the Trail Map to get more clarity. It is marked in blue color.

If you get down at Sigandoor which is another official stop after Nittur, retrace your way to the Marakutuka bus stand. You will cross a small bridge after a few hundred meters and come to this local bus stop of Marakutuka. This would be a preferred option as well.

Marakutuka-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Heading to Marakutuka. Picture by Suhas Saya

From the Marakutuka bus stop, spot a mud road towards your right. This takes you towards the forest side.

You need to trek for another 2 km that takes about half an hour to reach a small stream. Crossing this chilly stream gets the inner child inside you bubbling out.

Stream crossing-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Stream Crossing on the trek. Picture by Suhas Saya

If you are trekking during the monsoon season, watch out for the force of this stream. The water level will be knee-deep.

After crossing the stream, continue your trek on the mud trail. You will pass through some lovely quaint villages with wooden fences. A small village with houses spread and filled with paddy fields. The greenery around these huts and a serene rustic touch, your trek already has a charm added to it.

Paddy fields-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Pro Tip:  Just ensure that you keep to the  trail on the right  on any of the forks through the village. You will get a diversion about a kilometer into the trail from the stream crossing.

Forty minutes into the trail from the stream crossing, the first signs of the hill ranges are now visible to you.

Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

A few more minutes into the trail, you are welcomed by the signboard with the lion-tailed macaque, as the air is filled with voices of hornbills, treepies, and robin calling out. You are now entering into the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary.

Birdlife-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Continue your trek on this trail for another 10 minutes. You will pass a few houses of Hidlumane until you reach the last hut which has wooden gates as the fence. There seems to be no trail in front of you.

Last Hut of Hidlumane-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Last hut of Hidlumane. Picture by Suhas Saya

The trail actually passes through the last hut and towards the forest section next. If you are trekking from the Katinahole side, you can choose to join here.

Section 2:  Last hut of Hidlumane  to  PWD Guest house

Trek Distance:  3 km Trek Duration:  2.5 hrs GPS coordinates of the Last hut of Hidlumane:  13°52’51.68″N 74°53’25.94″E GPS coordinates of PWD Guest House:  13°51’43.47″N 74°52’30.29″E

The trail goes behind the last hut of Hidlumane. Paddy fields with two hillocks and this wooden hut make a perfect setting before you enter into the thick forest.

Paddy field-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Lush greenery and paddy fields. Picture by Suhas Saya

As soon as you enter the forest, you see a small stream feeding the fields. However, there is a bigger stream that can be heard flowing to your right. This is the same water flowing from the Hidlumane falls.

Forest section-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Initial forest section on the Kodachadri Trek. Picture by Suhas Saya

Leeches start from this area and continue onwards ahead in this section. You are now entering the Shola forest.

| Tip:  Apply Dettol or Savlon at the last hut of Hidlumane, before entering the forest to avoid leeches. If you are not too worried, the best option is to remove once you reach the jeep track. A few leeches sucking some of your blood won’t do any harm.

Hidlumane Falls is a combination of seven waterfalls with the main waterfall cascading down from a height of 50-60 feet.

It will take you easily half an hour if you are trekking during the monsoon or just after the monsoon season. Watch your step and be extremely careful when climbing up. The first two waterfalls are easier to climb. As you go higher, the trail is difficult to distinguish and is slippery with moss covering.

Hidlumane waterfall-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Hidlumane waterfalls. Picture by Sumukha Gargesh

This section is perhaps the most adventurous part with climbing over fallen logs, boulders, going on all fours to hold onto the trees and branches. It is a true adventure that we all love. | Tip:  When you are climbing up the cascade of waterfalls, go onto the sides of the forest where it will be easier. Climbing on the slippery rocks will be risky. Carrying a trekking pole comes very much in handy. Watch this video to understand more about  how to use trekking poles .

Once you reach the last waterfall or the main waterfall of Hidlumane, you need to  take the right  here. The trail is through a bit of thick jungle and can be overgrown. You will come across a boulder. Follow this trail for another half an hour and you reach the jeep track.

Note:  Do not take the left turn from the waterfalls. This leads you to a much longer route and is challenging. You need to trek later and cross three folds of grasslands to reach the main jeep track.

Jeep track-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

From the jeep track, go towards the East to visit a famous sunrise point. It takes about 15 minutes to reach this point. The views from the point are breathtaking and worth the visit if you like to explore a bit. The wind blowing feels like it’s gushing out from the valley.

Valley views-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Views of the valley on the Kodachadri Trek. Picture by Suhas Saya

If you are tired or getting late, then head on the trail to the west, which leads you to the PWD Guesthouse. The views can be taken from the top of Kodachadri as well.

The trek to PWD Guesthouse takes you another hour and a half through the jeep track at a leisurely pace, exploring the widths of the grassland and taking in the views at clearings on the trail.

Have a well-deserved rest near the base of Kodachadri. Carry your own packed lunch or you can contact the PWD guesthouse for your lunch here

Section 3:  Base of Kodachadri  to the  Peak of Kodachadri

Trek Distance:  2 km Trek Duration:  1 hour, 20 minutes GPS coordinates for Base of Kodachadri:  13°51’39.84″N 74°52’28.11″E GPS coordinates for the temple, the peak of Kodachadri:  13°51’25.66″N 74°52’2.12″E

From the PWD guest house, the trail toward the peak is well-marked and laid out. You will see the trail going towards the south. There is a small checkpost or gate kept with wooden logs that you cross and carry forward. Camping is banned beyond this point.

The trail from here onwards is a proper mud trail all the way to the temple.

About 15 minutes of your ascent, you will reach a fork that leads one to the left and the other to the right. The trail on the left takes you to the main sunrise point. The trail to the right takes you to the top or temple of the trek.

Mookambika Temple-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Mookambika Temple on the Kodachadri Trek. Picture by Suhas Saya

The trail to the peak is more of a ridge walk with a drop towards the left side when trekking. This section is notorious for being covered in mist and fog. If covered in mist, be careful of not venturing towards the left.

Continue on the trail and you will reach the temple in another 15-20 mins. You have reached the highest point of the trek.

There is a small diversion towards a cave and temple on the right. You can explore either while going towards the peak or while coming back from the temple point.

The serenity of the temple and environment feels like the best place to sit down, reflect, and enjoy the time at the top.

Views from the trail-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Pro Tip: There is a shoulder of the grassland to the south and just above the fork, where you get amazing views of the forest and grasslands. This makes an ideal spot for spending time in case the temple area is more crowded.

Soak into the views of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary and the rolling hills filled with greenery.

Trail view-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

View from the shoulder. Below this shoulder is the fork on the trail. The trail in front leads to the sunrise point. Picture by Suhas Saya

Head back to your place of stay for the night (PWD Guesthouse). Carry your own food for the entire duration of the trek.

Section 4:  Kodachadri  to  Vallur, Roadhead

Trek Distance:  8.2 km Trek Duration:  4.5 hours GPS coordinates for the Kodachadri Base descent:  13°51’44.39″N 74°52’29.40″E GPS coordinates for the Vallur, Roadhead:  13°54’46.32″N 74°51’54.68″E

This section covers the descent via Vallur which adds on to your experience and as a complete assortment for trekkers going on the Kodachadri Trek.

In case you don’t want to continue on this adventure, the option of going to Katinahole by following the jeep track or taking a jeep to Nittur is available.

Get up early and catch the sunrise. The sight of the sunrise is another exhilarating thing you should not miss out on.

Sunrise-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

The descent starts from a narrow trail just after the fork of PWD Guesthouse. You will see the trail on the left . The initial trial is through a series of forest and clearings.

Around 150 meters into the descent, you come across a small clearing in the forest. The trail again enters through a patch of forest for another 250 meters which takes you to the second clearing.

Trek for 20 minutes to enter an open grassland. You are reaching the shoulder of a ridge and descending through the ridge next. Towards the left, you hear a gushing force of water flowing down the valley. You cannot see this from the trail, however. It is hidden in the stunning thick jungle.

Further down the trail is when you enter the thickest parts of the forest. It is much denser compared to your previous day.

If you are trekking during the monsoon season, watch out for the leeches here. It is more in number at this side compared to Hidlumane. On a gloomy day, sunlight hardly reaches down to kiss the earth. You are covered with lush canopy all around.

Vallur Forest-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

Enjoy the experience of trekking through the rich and abundant flora, fauna region of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. The descent and the trail are well laid out. Do not take any major turns on a fork.

Take this route down to reach the end of the forest section. It takes about an hour and a half to reach down.

You can take a break for a quick brunch or grab a bite at Hotel Santosh. Do not expect any lavish menu or fresh food. The food prepared during the morning like Idly or Dosa might be available which you can relish after a nice intense trek. The trek from Hotel Santosh to the main road head of Kollur-Sampekatte will take around 1.5 hours. The distance is close to 5.5 km from Hotel Santosh to the road head. You won’t find any vehicles from the hotel to the road and need to walk through a mix of mud and broken tar road.

If you are heading back to Bangalore, then head towards Kollur where you will get an overnight bus. You can pre-book the bus before going on the trek. Local buses are infrequent. You might have to wait for 30 to 40 mins sitting on the road to get a bus going to Kollur. The other option is to head to the major city of Shimoga/Shivamogga which takes about 2.5 hrs on a local bus.

➤ Best Season To Do The Kodachadri Trek

The best season to do Kodachadri trek is from October to February. Post monsoon or the winters are the best seasons to do the Kodachadri Trek.

Post monsoon, you will witness the lush greenery of the region in its full glory. The trek can be extended till the pre-summer season when most part of the trek has a mix of brown and green. During the winter season, you will have much clearer views compared to the monsoon season.

Sunrise-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

The trek can be done during the summer season. The colors will be much browner in the shade once you move from the forest section towards the grasslands.

The region receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. If you want to take this option, be prepared for the challenge of trekking during the monsoon. Have the right gears and go with somebody who has the experience of trekking, navigating. The difficulty of the trek increases when you trek during the peak of monsoon.

➤   How to Reach Kodachadri Trek

The Kodachadri trek starts from a small village called Nittur situated in the Shimoga district. From Shimoga, Nittur is close to 110 km towards the west.  Even if you are planning to start from other villages of Katinahole or Vallur, you need to pass this village of Nittur.

Those who don’t want to trek and are looking to take a jeep, Nittur would be the place where one can hire the jeep. You can see the costing of these jeeps below.

Reaching Kodachadri by Public Transport System

The base village Nittur is easy to reach if you are traveling from Bangalore. You get direct buses from Bangalore (Majestic/Anand Rao Circle) to Nittur. These buses go to Kollur via Shivamoga.

Go through the details here. There are many buses from Bangalore to Kollur that can be booked online at  KSRTC website . An overnight journey will take around 8-9 hrs to reach Nittur.

| Tip:  There is an option of taking a jeep from Nittur all the way to the PWD Guest House if you don’t want to trek. The roads are treacherous and only jeeps can take these paths.

Jeep track-Kodachadri Trek-Indiahikes-Suhas Saya

The entire cost for the jeep will be around Rs 3,000. If you have other travelers, then the shared cost will come to approximately Rs 350 per person two ways. If you are going in a group, the cost can be reduced to Rs 2,500 or 2000 depending on the season you are trekking.

Reaching Kodachadri by your own vehicle

If you are planning on reaching Nittur or Kattinahole using your own vehicle from Bangalore, you can use this  link  to help setup navigation in google maps. For a more detailed explanation, read through the information below.

Take the Bangalore-Mumbai highway, NH48 from Bangalore. Cross Tumkur and head ahead to Hiriyur. At Hiriyur, you need to take a left and head towards the west on the State Highway, SH24. This road takes you to Shimoga.

After Tarikere, you have the option of either going via Shimoga city or taking the route through the perimeter of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. The route via Shimoga is more well laid and a faster route. If you want more greenery and roads which are scenic, then going via Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a preferable option.

Your target from here would be going to Nagara first. From Nagara, you are half an hour away to Nittur. Depending on where you want to start the trek, you can either head to Kattinahole or Marakutaka.

➤ Difficult Sections On The Kodachadri Trek

Kodachadri trek is of  Moderate  difficulty if you are trekking from Nittur/Marakutuka to Vallur. Your endurance will be tested if you are trekking in this route. Also, the factor of Hidlumane Falls makes the trek more challenging with some slippery sections.

If you are taking the route from or to Nittur via Hidlumane Falls, then the trek can be considered as an easy-moderate trek.

One way, the trek will be close to 19.5 km if you are going on the route suggested in the trek guide.

1.  The section from the last hut of Hidlumane to the keep track is one stretch which makes the trek moderate difficulty. The trek through rocks and the slippery trail can be risky if you are not careful and don’t take the right measures. Make sure you wear proper trekking shoes and a trekking pole.

2. The stretch in the forest section can be tricky when covered with mist and fog. There are high chances of trekkers taking a wrong turn and ending up taking either a difficult route/incorrect trail. Having the GPX file downloaded is a strong suggestion from us.

3.  In case of any injuries or accidents, evacuation will take a longer time compared to other treks. This would be another reason why the trek is classified as a moderate trek.

➤ How To Get Fit On The Kodachadri Trek

The Kodachadri Trek is classified as a Moderate grade trek. Trekking for two days and for close to 12 hours will require good strength in legs and also cardio. The trek can be demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Training yourself for a medium-altitude moderate grade trek

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for the trek in 4 weeks:

❖ Cardiovascular Endurance

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace everyday in the following manner

  • Target completing a jog of 5 km in 40 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by running 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce another day of running in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you run in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 40 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 18 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 25 km in one hour.

❖ Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves, and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength:

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set.

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward, and lateral lunges)

❖ Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however, light can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

The Kodachadri hill is a Natural Heritage Site, which is part of the Western Ghats and forms a lovely backdrop to the famous Kollur Mookambika Temple. Famed for its glorious sunrises and sunsets, this hill range is part of the Mookambika Temple Nature Reserve. The peak of Kodachadri (at an altitude of 1343 m above sea level) can be reached by a five-hour trek. Trekking in Kodachadri hill with friends or as a bunch of solo travellers can be an adventurous and spiritual experience. On the western side, the hill descends steeply for about 1220 m, meeting the forests of Udupi district. The trek up to the ancient temple from this point involves a climb of 4 km through thick jungle trails. Kollur is an ideal base from which to explore the hills. The name Kodachadri is derived from Sanskrit language word Kutaja, meaning Jasmine of the Hills.

Things to do at Natural Heritage Site – Kodachadri Hills:

  • Visit Ganesha Guha and Sarvanja Peetha on top of the peak, where Saint Adi Shankaracharya is said to have meditated. Ganesha Guha is a mysterious cave enroute to trekker trails and an ancient idol of Lord Ganesha can be found within the cave.
  • Trek to Hidlumane waterfalls, 5 kms from Kodachadri. Tucked away within the reserve forest, an adventurous trek to Hidlumane Waterfalls will help you reconnect with the natures abundance.
  • Enjoy the trek and sunset. On a clear day you might be able to see Arabian Sea at a distance as well as Kollur town.
  • Arasinagundi Falls (6KM from Kollur), Belakallu Theertha, Nagara Fort

How to reach Kodachadri Hills:

To reach Kodachadri one should arrive at Kollur town. Kollur is 130 kms from Mangaluru (nearest airport) and 430 kms from Bengaluru. Several private buses operate all through the day between Mangaluru and Kollur. Byndoor Mookambika Road train station is 20 kms from Kollur.

From Kollur visitors can reach Kodachadri hiring 4×4 jeeps available for rent. The last few kms of the hill roads are notoriously dangerous and unsuitable for normal vehicles. Only well experienced local drivers in their 4×4 jeeps ferry tourists up and down the hill for a nominal fee. Experienced bike riders also manage to ride till top of the hill. It is also possible to reach nearby towns of Nitturu using their own vehicles or public transport and from Nitturu hike up the hill to reach Kodachadri. For safety reasons solo travel is not recommended, hiring a local guide and trekking in groups is advised. Beware of leeches and slippery surfaces during monsoon.

Table of Contents

Kodachadri Mountain Peak is the hidden gem in Karnataka’s Western Ghats Shimoga District that is ready to be explored for its diverse geographical nature. The Peak is situated 1343 meters above sea level and acts as a curtain raiser to the Kollur Mookambika temple.

Kodachadri Trek is famous for its trekking journey through lush Greenland, paddy fields, waterfalls, and golden views of sunrise and sunset. It is the 10th highest peak in South India, drenched in monsoon rain and covered in vast greenery attracting tourists and travelers around the country to experience the serene nature of the place.

Post updated. Best Places to Visit in Qatar with Family

The Best route to trek through:

trekking Kodachadri

There are two options to consider before trekking Kodachadri and enjoy the peak’s gift to its tourists as much as possible.

Kollur which is the closest to Kodachadri is the best spot to reach the Hill. You can easily get to Kollur from Bangalore or Shimoga. From Kollur you can visit Nagoda Village which is situated at the base of the peak.

The Alternate route will be to travel overnight to  Nittur, you can book a flight to Bangalore or Mangalore then book a cab and travel to Nittur or you can board a train from KundaPura Railway Station and travel via cab to Nittur. The trek is a 12 KM route from Nittur to Kodachadri gate.

Places you shouldn’t miss in Kodachadri:

Hidlumane Waterfall

The trek takes around 8 to 10 hours(almost a day) to complete. But after completing the journey you will be amazed by its beauty. The best time to be here is after monsoon which is from October to May as the weather is pleasant and you will be able to enjoy each part of the Peak.

It is believed that Sage Adi Shankar used to Meditate on this Peak’s top. To acknowledge and commemorate this  Sarvajna Peetha was built.further into the trek you can visit Ganesh Guha which is an ancient stone temple of Lord Ganesha built inside a cave surrounded by lots of mysteries. You can get a glimpse of Lord Ganesha’s Statue inside the Cave also.

The most hidden yet most beautiful place is Hidlumane Waterfall which is 5 km away from the Kodachadri trek, is hidden in the center of a vast forest reserve that will be very helpful in recharging your battery as you take a dip in its purest waterfall, all your tired and exhaustion will vanish.

As you make it to the top of The Hill you can witness the golden moment of sunset or sunrise depending on your time of journey. In clear weather, you can get a glimpse of the mighty Arabian Sea.

Things to consider before going to Kodachadri:

Our suggestion is to hire a local guide, an experienced trekking unit to guide you through the adventure.

If you are unsure or nervous about trekking, rent a 4X4 jeep as there are many professionals to take you to the top of the hill. The muddy route through the jungle is infested with Leeches, so protective footwear and trekking trousers are a must for the journey.

The dense forest is a habitat for many species of poisonous snakes so ankle-length footwear is more protective than normal shoes.

Pack first aid and necessary meds, as the amenities throughout the trekking are basic. So carrying enough water and Snacks is a must for the journey. Carrying torches and insect repellent is a must. The route passes through a wild reserve, so maintaining silence and keeping littering to the minimum is safe. Carry only essential things and travel light to avoid unwanted exhaustion.

Other attractions of Kodachadri

Teertha waterfall karnataka

As mentioned in the first paragraph Kollur Mookambika is believed to be established by Lord Parshuram. The intricate details of the ancient design will fascinate you.

The Golden and Serene Sunset at Malpe near Udupi also forces you to extend your vacation to cover more areas surrounding Kodachadri. Agastya Teertha is a waterfall situated adjacent to Kodachadri, which can only be found by local guides. This 16th-century Nagara fort is also one of the main attractions you can visit.

Why should you be here?

If you are a person who loves adventure, loves the thrill of nature, enjoys the serene beauty of the forest, gets amazed by lush greenery, the sheer symmetrical ASMR of paddy fields, and enjoys the cold yet refreshing waterfall. then you must be here. Ismail lakdawala.

  • April 13, 2018

An adventurous trip with waterfalls, treks, camping and beaches! All in just two days. This itinerary works perfect  from Bangalore as it can be covered in just 2 days.  This guide helps you to know the exact route of trekking Kodachadri via Hidlumane Falls and how to time it perfectly so you can also enjoy the beaches of Kundapura which are just 60 Kms away.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

  • Leave from Bangalore at night
  • Arrive at Kodachadri and begin Trek
  • Night stay at the peak
  • Descend in morning and head over to Kundapura
  • Lunch at Kundapura and Relax at Beach
  • Return via night bus to Bangalore

QUICK GLIMPSE OF THE TREK

HOW TO REACH

Only buses go to Kodachadri as its deep in the western ghats. Nearest town is Nitur. In order to trek Kodachadri

  • Catch a bus to Nittur where the trail starts
  • Travel in Sleeper buses. They allow you to rest at night and not worry about parking your vehicles and drive long distances.
  • KSRTC seating bus leaves from Majestic at 10PM. We traveled in it and it was a decent journey. It was around 400Rs. per ticket.
  • It will drop you at Nittur at 7AM.
  • For the return ticket, book a sleeper bus from Kundapura as per your preferred time. We took a 9PM KSRTC sleeper bus which was around Rs.1100 a ticket. It was a good bus and the journey was hassle free.
  • We booked the return ticket after reaching Kundapura on Day 2, as our plan was not fixed. You can decide on this as per your plan

WHERE TO STAY

  • There are multiple guest houses at the base of the hill where you can come down to at night.
  • We tried camping on the hill, but there are strict no camping and night halt signs all across the trail and on the peak, so we didn’t risk camping.
  • There is a government guest house at the hill as well, however when we contacted the person for the stay before the trek, he informed us that it is only for group bookings of minimum 10 people. You can try reaching him on –  9449145540 Mr. Rajendra.
  • The picture here is the house of the temple’s priest. This is just a little before the peak. We asked him if we can stay the night. And he permitted us to live in his house for Rs. 200 per person.
  • We took the option and stayed the night in this cozy house.

ABOUT THE TREK

There are essentially 3 ways to the peak

  • Take a Jeep from Sampekatte till the top and trek the last part
  • Start the trek from Kollur (This Trail’s starting point is available on Google Maps). Take the Kollur bus for this option.
  • Trek from Nittur via Hidlumane Falls and reach the peak. (Around 8-10Kms)

The Hidlumane Falls has 6 small tiers before you reach the final Drop. However these 7 are evidently in force only during and post monsoons. None the less it is worth visiting as the place is beautiful.

For the trek, we took the 3rd option from the above mentioned routes.

Leave from Majestic Bus Stand Bangalore at 10PM for Nittur .

  • Arrive at Nittur at 7 am.
  • Have breakfast at Bus drop point and pack lunch for the afternoon from those shops
  • Ask the locals for the Hidlumane Falls Trail
  • Begin Walking the trail.
  • Keep asking the locals you meet on the trail about the way to falls just to be sure
  • There will be several small trails protruding, but sticking to the main trail will be best, it will be easily identifiable
  • You will reach a house where the rice fields are there. You need to cross through this. Take permission of the residents and they will point the way forward.
  • Arrive at Hidlumane Falls, enjoy the fresh water and have lunch.
  • From the falls, there will be a trail to the right for going further.
  • Take this trail and continue the ascent.
  • You will reach the Kodachadri View Point 2 in between.
  • From there you will see the jeep track going to the hill.
  • Walk with the jeep trail all the way to the top.
  • Get refreshed at the jeep parking spot at the peak and begin final climb to the peak .
  • Come back to the jeep parking and arrange for the night stay or discuss with  a jeep driver to take you down to the base of the hill
  • You can stay up at the available options or descend in the jeep and find a guest house at the base point.

kodachadri trek from kollur

  • We had decided to spend the night at the top of the hill
  • Wake up early morning and head to the sunrise point or the Kodachadri View point -1 on google maps.
  • You can see a spectacular sunrise if the fog permits.
  • Post that get a jeep driver to drop you till the base. They should take Rs. 200 per person for one way journey,
  • Reach the base and have a breakfast
  • Catch a bus to Sampekatte from the point where jeep drops you
  • Wait for a bus to Kollur from Sampekatte (If you find a direct bus to Kundapura take that)
  • From Kollur bus stand take the bus to Kundapura
  • These buses are all local buses passing at regular intervals, you will not find any details about them on internet, so keep asking the locals, they will be more than helpful
  • Arrive at Kundapura by noon
  • Have lunch as per your choice and head out to Marvanthe Beach
  • There will be buses or autos taking you here.
  • The ride to beach offers some spectacular views.
  • Marvanthe beach is one of the beaches where you see the ocean on one side and a huge river meandering on the other. It’s one of the best experiences to have
  • Enjoy and Relax at the beach, don’t head in too far in the ocean as the waves can be strong and no lifeguards are posted.
  • Explore the long beach and head back to Kundapura via bus/auto, buses will stop for you if you wave a hand at them. Rs. 50 per person expected as the fare.
  • Have dinner at Kundapura and wait at the bus stand to board the bus back to Bangalore.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

  • Keep sufficient water and glucose on the trek with you.
  • Try to keep your luggage to minimum, the trek is arduous.
  • We have traveled in month of March, during the rains the falls are at full force and trails are slippery, be prepared.
  • Keep warm clothes/blanket with you. The temperature at the peak during night gets cold.
  • Be a little patient while waiting for public transports and local buses.

Kodachadri – A Spiritual Adventure for the Hardy

December 22, 2011 by madur

The Kodachadri hill is a part of the Western Ghats and lies in the district of Shimoga . This hill range forms a lovely backdrop to the famous Kollur Mookambika Temple , near which it is located. You can easily access this place from Kollur, thanks to its proximity to the region. In fact, it is considered that the Kodachadri Hill was the original abode of the Goddess, before Sri Adi Shankara had the idol of the Goddess installed at the Kollur Temple.

There is an ancient shrine here dedicated to the Mother Goddess on the hill which is the place where Sri Adi Shankara performed his meditation. This hill range is part of the Mookambika Temple Nature Reserve.

Trekking Options in Kodachadri

A Trek Up the Kodachadri Hill

Trekking in Kodachadri can be an adventurous and spiritual experience. The trek starts at the base of the Kodachadri Hill. On the way, you will pass the Bhakti Vedantha Eco Village belonging to ISKCON.

The trek up to the ancient temple from this point involves a climb of 4 km through thick jungle trails. The Siddheshwara Huliraya Mookambika Temple as this shrine is called, actually consists of two temple complexes. The first temple is dedicated to the terrible, warrior form of the Goddess, with an ancient 7 meter high iron pillar in front.

A bit higher up, there is the second temple, dedicated to the calm and beautiful Uma Maheshwari form of the goddess. This temple complex has a small pond and is surrounded by four sacred springs.

Trekkers who visit this temple can stay in rooms hired out by the temple priest for a very low charge and food is also provided at reasonable rates. Staying here overnight facilitates easy access to the peak during the early morning hours.

An early morning trek to the top, before daybreak, will enable you to witness the breathtaking view of sunrise. On clear days, the view of the surrounding regions and the Arabian Sea from this summit can be an experience to treasure for a lifetime. There is another ancient temple here which is known as Shankara Peetam.

For the more adventurous, there is the steep trek down the western side of the hill to reach the holy Chitramoola Cave. It is believed that Sri Adi Shankara sat in meditation here for several days.

A Trek Around the Hidlumane Waterfalls

Around 10 km from Kodachadri is this beautiful waterfall, with just a bridle path leading up to it. This can be a fine trekking option to those who can tackle a bit of challenging terrain.

A Visit to the Arasinagundi Falls

From the base of Kodachadri hills, you can also trek to the Arasinagundi waterfalls, which is a medium level trek. From the temple town of Kollur, this is a one day trek.

Shimoga is a beautiful city located across the Tunga River in the state of Karnataka. The well-known Jog Falls is located just a 2-hour drive from Shimoga city. Among the attractions in the city are Shiva Temple, Gandhi Park, Shivappa Nayaka Palace, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Mattur Lake, Dabbe Falls and more. This place is abundant with nature and wildlife. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary houses endangered and native animals like panthers and elephants, Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary attracts bird watchers from all over India, and Sakrebyle Elephant Camp provides elephant rides. Among other places to visit nearby are Agumbe, Gudavi Bird Sanctuary and Gajanur Dam. The weather here is good after the monsoon season, in the winter months of October to February. Do not forget to visit Tyavarekoppa, a zoo and a picnic hot-spot, famous for Tiger and Lion Safari. The city is stuffed with unlimited shopping stuff such as hand-crafts, jewellery, sarees, sandalwood and many more. For food fix, travellers can find several Indian and multi-cuisine restaurants in the city.

A hill called Kodachadri in the district of Shimoga is a lesser known trekking destination. This peak in the Western Ghats winds through thick forests and is the natural habitat of a variety of wildlife.

Description Of Kodachadri - A place near Murudeshwara

Kodachadri Hills serve as a stunning backdrop of evergreen forests to the town of Maravanthe. Located in the Western Ghats at a height of 4411 feet above the sea level amidst Karnataka’s Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, they also prove to be one of the good trekking trails, beginning at the South Kanara Forest.

Beginners or trekking newbies can easily undertake this trek. Since most of the expedition covers a forest landscape amidst low altitudes, chances of altitude sickness are low as well. The total distance is 14 kilometres to and fro.

Nestled deep in the Western Ghats in the district of Shimoga and holding its place as the tenth highest peak in the State, Kodachadri is home to lush green jungle trails through dense tropical forests, picturesque waterfalls and mesmerizing landscapes. Located in the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, it also forms the perfect backdrop to the Moola Mookambika Temple, believed to be the place of origin of Goddess Mookambika . Catching a glimpse of the evening sunset into the Arabian Sea from its peak offers an enchanting experience; a combination of mountain and ocean, that very few peaks in the country can boast of.

Trekking In Kodachadri

There are mainly three trails to the peak apart from several other less explored ones. The most popular, as well as the most challenging, is the one via Hidlumane Falls starting from either Sampekatte or Marakuttaka. This trail is relatively steep and rugged and requires you to make your way through thick forests, gentle streams and quite literally climb a waterfall which becomes a whole other ballgame during peak monsoons. Despite the efforts, the journey to the top is one you’ll remember and be proud of as you’re transported to another world, with magical sights, untouched forests and challenging climbs at every corner.

The other relatively easier trail is the one from Karakatte via Santhosh Hotel, Valur (Trek Route 2 in the image above). Private vehicles can easily come up till the tiny settlement housing the hotel and one can begin their trek from here which takes around 4-5 hours to reach the peak.

The third trail is actually a jeep route and is the longest of the three and is one which you’ll be taking on your descent from Kodachadri  if you happen to opt for a jeep.

All three trails eventually culminate at the Moola Mookambika temple which also houses a PWD guest house and a couple of homestays that serve as an important landmark on your way to the peak. From here the peak is around 2 kms.

Best time to visit Kodachadri

The best time to visit Kodachadri depends on your preferences and what you want to experience. Kodachadri, located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India, offers different experiences throughout the year:

Winter (November to February):  This is considered the peak season due to the pleasant weather. The temperature remains cool, making it ideal for trekking and outdoor activities. The views are clear, and you can witness breathtaking sunsets and sunrises.

Monsoon (June to September):  The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to the region, resulting in lush greenery and beautiful waterfalls. However, trekking during this time can be challenging due to slippery trails and leeches. If you enjoy the misty and mystical atmosphere, this could be a great time to visit.

Summer (March to May):  Summers in Kodachadri can be hot and humid, but it’s still a good time to visit if you prefer less crowded trails. The vegetation might not be as vibrant as during the monsoon, but the clear skies provide excellent visibility of the surrounding landscapes.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Kodachadri depends on your preferences for weather and activities. If you’re planning to trek, winter might be ideal, while if you want to experience the lush greenery, monsoon could be perfect.

Kodachadri trek -A weekend getaway from Mangaluru

Photo of Chaithra Kowshik

Kodachadri hills located in the dense forest of western ghats. Kodachadri trek is a three and half hrs journey from Mangaluru. There are two routes to reach this place. One route is to reach from Shivamogga to Kodachadri. For us nearest route is through Kollur.

A small town in Kundapur Taluk, famous for ancient Sri Mookambika Temple surrounded by its scenic beauty and amidst thick forest of Western ghats. There are lot many buses run between Mangaluru and Kollur . We group of five girls left our place at around 4.30 pm. By the time we reach it was around 7.30pm. As soon as we arrived at Kollur we checked into a hotel and rushed to Mookambika temple as it was about to close. Luckily we reached on time and had darshana of goddesses Mookambika, it was divine to see the god. After that we roamed around the temple streets and went back to our hotel. Next day we had planned to leave early morning for the Kodachadri trek.

KODACHADRI TREK

Kodachadri is accessible only by Jeep or Bikes till some point. To reach the peak you have to trek around 2km. Usually, trekekers start from the base point which takes around 9 km one side. In the Morning at mid of the main street Jeeps will be available. We wanted to visit Hidlumane falls but we did not hire the whole jeep for ourselves so we had to skip the waterfalls. We went to the last accessible point and started our trek. We had a wonderful roller-coaster ride in the jeep, till now I haven't experienced and we enjoyed it throughout our journey. Yes, on a serious note from the base point till the top it's a challenging road for two-wheel riders. Only experienced drivers could take us on that road.

Once we reached starting point we started walking towards the top. On our way small vendors who were selling buttermilk, pineapple etc. Buttermilk had heavenly taste, it was cold as if it was just taken from the cooler. One of my friend who doesn't like curd, buttermilk even she drank more than 2 glasses. pineapple, gooseberry, of course, buttermilk etc was our food throughout the Kodachadri trek. Meanwhile lots of chitchatting, laughing, competition to take solo pictures for our social profiles, in between warnings from another group of women for taking pictures at the edge ( we were aware and careful still we got warnings).

We reached the top after walking one hr and spent some time at the top. There is a small temple called Sarvajna Peeta, where it is believed that Shri Adi Shankaracharya meditated at the top. There is a saying " best view comes after hardest climbing" in our case it was not that hardest climbing still we got the best view with mountains covered with clouds, thick forest, cool breeze. Overall it was mesmerizing. After some time we were back to the starting point where our jeep was waiting for us. Then back to Kollur, checked out our hotel and with little tiredness, we headed back to Mangaluru thinking that next time we would cover waterfalls and start the kodachadri trek from the base point.
