Full Itinerary

Day 1: arrive at vientiane, the quiet capital of laos – welcome dinner.

Upon arrival in Vientiane, the quiet capital city of Laos, you will notice the remnants of the country’s French Colonial past such as French mansions exuding their old charm behind noodle stalls that emanate aromas of fresh garlic and ginger. The scent of freshly baked baguettes spreads from the many cafes and bakeries in the center of the town.

You can catch a glimpse of ancient Buddhist temples scattered through the winding street and the skyline enhanced by the impressive architecture of the Patuxai Victory Monument . This impressive 20th-century arch bears much resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but it was decorated with images of Hindu gods. The elegant charm of Vientiane reveals itself as you stroll through the park and watch the palm trees rustle in the breeze, or appreciate the four ponds in the courtyard that represent a lotus flower. Overnight in Vientiane.

Day 2: Enjoy a Morning Tour through the Quaint Streets of Vientiane and the Buddha Park (B, L, D)

As the sun shines over the city of Vientiane and the morning coffee shops start to open, the streets look more like a lovely walkway in Paris than the capital city of a Southeast Asian nation. Then we visit Wat Sisaket, Wat Prakeo and That Luang. Outside of the city is the Buddha Park (also known as Xieng Khuang) which displays over 200 intricately sculpted religious statues. The park was open in the 1950s by a monk who studied both Hindu and Buddhist principles. The artists have specific interpretations of both gods and demons that show deeper than just the artists’ abilities. There’s also a reclining Buddha image that stretches over 120 feet long, so ready to feel tiny here. The sculptures in the park are fascinating not only for their incredible size but also for their intriguing and thoughtful details. Overnight in Vientiane.

Day 3: Travel North to the Beautiful Ancient City of Luang Prabang (B, L, D)

Patuxai Victory Monument in Vientiane

hoian tour

Upon arrival in Hoi An, we take a walking tour to Hoi An Ancient Town - an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th century. We start our day with one of Vietnam’s most iconic attractions, the Japanese Covered Bridge . The bridge was created by the Japanese living in Hoi An in the 1590s as a way to reach the Chinese quarter across the water and is a beautiful historical piece of Japanese architecture. However, no visit to Hoi An is complete without a visit to Tan Ky House - one of the many ancient houses that make up Hoi An Ancient Town. Built two centuries ago with both Japanese and Chinese influences on architecture, this house has been preserved through several generations.

We will continue our walking tour and encounter many other quintessential Hoi An houses from wealthy Chinese merchants. Another ‘must-see’ if the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall ; built in 1690, this hall is, in fact, a temple dedicated to the sea goddess Thien Hau. It is widely considered an outstanding work of architecture and was a uniting presence to the many cultures that influenced Hoi An.

There will be visits to colourful riverside markets and workshops where artisans make Hoi An's famous lanterns. Here, you can learn how the lanterns are skilfully made and then you will have a chance to create your own lantern.

In the afternoon, we enjoy a comfortable ride to Thu Bon River to board a river cruise. Sailing down the river, you will experience the local life, such as fishing, farming, and catching clams. We then visit Thanh Ha ceramic village to admire its intricate pottery and see old men who produce jars and vases. Getting back to the boat, we cruise down to the Cua Dai estuary for a spectacular view of the sun setting over Thu Bon River and the sea before returning back to the harbour where our driver is awaiting to take you back to the hotel.

saigon tour

After breakfast at the hotel, our driver will meet and transfer you to Danang Airport for your flight to Saigon. Upon arrival at Tan Son Nhat Airport, meet your new guide and driver who escort you to the hotel in the city center for an easy check-in. You will then have time to get some lunch on your own and relax. In the afternoon, we take a half day to visit all famous sites of this bustling city. The first destination is the  Reunification Palace  (outside visit) which was the former residence of the President of South Vietnam until April 30, 1975 when North Vietnamese tanks came crashing through the front gates thus bringing the Vietnam War to a dramatic end. This will be followed by some French colonial structures including , the  Notre Dame Cathedral &  the  Old Saigon Post Office . Notre Dame Cathedral was built between 1877 and 1883, and the stones used to create it were exported entirely from France. Apart from the religious meaning, the most captivating point of this Cathedral is its neo-Romanesque style of architecture. Next to the cathedral stands  the Central Post Office , finished in1891. It is another fine example of French architecture and is Vietnam's largest post office (still in operation !). After visiting the War Remnant Museum , we continue our trip to the bustling  Ben Thanh Market , which is a fantastic place for bargains of every kind! There are a number of vendors and food stalls in the market food section that offers guests many delicious dishes. You also can find many goods for daily use as well as variety of eye-catching local crafts and souvenirs.

After lunch (at your own cost), we will visit the  Roluos Group  which served as the capital of Indravarman I (reigned 877-89). These are among the earliest large, permanent temples built by the Khmers and mark the beginning of Khmer classical art . Preah Ko   was erected by Indravarman I in the late 9th century & dedicated by the King to his ancestors in 880.  Bakong  the largest and most interesting of the Roluos group temples, is an active Buddhist monastery just to the north of the east entrance.  Lolei  is in the center of a large reservoir (now rice fields) and built by Yasovarman I, the founder to the first city at Angkor. Bit confusing !  Don’t worry, your guide will be able to assist with all queries.

Meals Included: Breakfast Accommodation: Hotel in Siem Riep

Day 9: Siem Riep - Angkor Wat - Angkor Thom (B/-/-)

banteay samre temple tour tonkin travel

After breakfast, we visit the most famous of all the temples,  Angkor Wat . The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Its distinctive five towers are emblazoned on the Cambodian flag and the 12th century masterpiece is considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. Angkor Wat's five towers symbolise Meru's five peaks - the enclosed wall represents the mountains at the edge of the world and the surrounding moat, the ocean beyond.

After lunch at a local restaurant (at your own cost), we visit the  South Gate  , the ancient capital of Angkor Thom (12th century),  Bayon   Temple  (unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara), the  Royal Enclosure ,  Phimeanakas , the  Elephants Terrace  and finally, the  Terrace of the Leper King .  We end the day with a sunset  at Angkor Wat. This is absolutely phenomenal.

Day 10: Siem Riep - Tonle Sap Lake - Apsara Dinner (B/-/D)

tonle sap lake tonkin travel

After breakfast at the hotel, we drive south to visit  the floating village of Chong Khneas , located 10km from Siem Reap. Upon arrival, we will take  an excursion in a traditional wooden boat on the Tonle Sap Lake , the "Great Lake" of Cambodia, one of the largest in Asia.

After lunch (at your own cost) at a local restaurant, we visit " Les Artisans d'Angkor - Chantiers Ecoles"  of Siem Reap. You then have free time to check out a local market before heading back to the hotel for your last night in Cambodia.

In the evening, we enjoy  Dinner with Apsara Dance Show . No visit to Cambodia is complete without at least a quick glimpse of women performing the ancient art of Apsara dancing, as depicted on the walls of Angkor’s temples. Wearing glittering silk tunics, sequinned tops (into which they are sewn into before each performance to achieve the requisite tight fit) and elaborate golden headdresses, they execute their movements with great deftness and deliberation, knees bent in plié, heels touching the floor. Every position has its own particular symbolism – a finger pointing to the sky, for instance, indicates “today”, while standing sideways to the audience with the sole of the foot facing upwards represents flying. We hope you enjoy it and we’ll see you in the morning.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner Accommodation: Hotel in Siem Riep

We booked a trip to Thailand with a family of 5 and were thrilled by the service and package put together by Bruce. It was an incredible experience with memories for a lifetime in the places we visited, the personalized service and responsiveness and the great food and accomodations.

One of the best tours I have ever experienced.

One of the best tours I have ever experienced. Three of us toured Vietnam for 10 days. Mia Wang was the best! She answered every question promptly and took care of everything, even getting our seat assignments for our in country flights. Having our own driver and guides made the experience evenbetter. The guides were so informative and personable. The excursions were fun, interesting and varied. Our hotels were top notch. I highly recommend using Indochina Odyssey for planning your visit.

Trip of a lifetime!

We worked with Liz and right from the start she helped to crest the perfect itinerary for our trip to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam for our family which included 2 teenaged boys. She checked in throughout our trip and let us know of changes to our itinerary or delays. We were met in every airport by an English speaking native guide. Each guide shared with us the beauty of their country.

Date of experience : December 19, 2017

Our upcoming trip to Greece

My husband, two friends, and I choose Odynovo Tours for our upcoming trip to Greece. We have been working with Bruce Peng on planning our trip to Greece and he has been amazing in every way. He worked diligently to personalize the trip based upon our preferences. Our communication through email was excellent. I highly recommend Bruce Peng as a travel consultant. I plan to write a detailed review upon our return as I expect that the trip will exceed our expectations.

Extremely happy

First time traveling to Vietnam and we couldn't be happier with Indochina Odyssey Tours. Our agent Nikki was very helpful, giving advice and ensuring we were happy with everything. She even made some changes for us when the weather turned bad without any fuss. We were particularly happy with her responsiveness as she replied to our emails no later than the next day and often the same day, no matter what. The tour guide they chose for us, Mr Tung, was awesome and we had the most amazing trip. We would recommend Nikki, Mr Tung and Indochina Odyssey Tours to anyone.

Date of experience : April 11, 2018

Dear R Lynem, Thanks for your comments. Odyssey Tours travel consultant and the customer care team will monitor the tour all along to make sure all the things go well, sometimes, unforeseen things happen, like what you said the weather turned bad, or flight cancelled or cruise cancelled...etc, our team will take care of you and go to solve the problems. We always try our best to make the tours the memorable ones to all our clients. I do hope we can have chance arrange another tour for you. Best Regards, Sinba Guang

Three weeks of daily new experiences.

Over 3 weeks and all proceeded like clockwork. Fantastic organisation by Alick. Email responses very quick throughout. Amazing experiences and we particularly enjoyed the homestay lunch...ask for more of these. Lots of temples but each one different to the last. Be warned...Halong bay can be very very busy on excursions and we would spend more to avoid crowds another time. Cannot fault tour company...plenty of opportunity to make tour fit you. We really liked the smaller, more friendly hotels and should have asked for these.

indochina odyssey tours

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.
