This Iconic Swiss Hotel Has a 30,000 Bottle Wine Collection and an Underground Nightclub

Not to mention an incredible ski scene.

I’m standing in the lobby of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in Switzerland trying to soak in all of the beauty around me. The dark wood-paneled walls, ornate coffered ceiling, gilded details, and arching windows of Le Grand Hall (also known as “the living room of St. Moritz”) contrast the magnificent view framed directly outside: acres of pure white snow, towering mountains, and swaths of black alpine trees, all illuminated by sunshine. The unspoiled snow glitters like a kaleidoscope, and it’s so blindingly white that it hurts my eyes to look at it without sunglasses.

I turn around and admire the incredible collection of time-worn art hanging on the walls around me. There’s a mix of different periods, subjects, and styles, but I fixate on the oil paintings with ornate gilded frames. When I ask a staff member about one of the piece’s provenance , they tell me it was stashed here during World War II so it wouldn’t be confiscated by the Nazis, and its owner tragically never came back for it. I learned that many of the pieces in the hotel’s collection share this story.

If the walls at Badrutt’s Palace could talk, they’d tell over 128 years of riveting tales, from hosting Wimbledon and the French Open in the early 1900s, to welcoming guests like Alfred Hitchcock, Bridgette Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin, and Coco Chanel. The hotel’s signature Rolls Royce cars that pick guests up from the train station in style? They’re from the British Royal Family’s personal fleet, natch. Each day spent at the Palace reveals a new layer, a new secret, a new story about its fascinating past—but this iconic grand dame hotel isn’t slowing down any time soon.

Today, Badrutt’s Palace continues to build its legacy while paying homage to the romantic era of the “Grand European Tour” during which it was founded. As the birthplace of winter sports, it boasts direct access to the world-class Corviglia ski area and an unreal aprés ski scene at Paradiso Mountain Club with belly-warming fondue, crisp Champagne, and international DJs (you might just stand on the table and dance in a floor-length faux fur coat, there’s no judgment here). Each winter, the Palace also plays host to The ICE , where beautiful and rare classic cars race across the frozen Lake St. Moritz.

You might think a hotel of this caliber would feel stuffy or highfalutin, but it has a welcoming and playful spirit—next-level parties are simply ingrained in its DNA. In 1953, Badrutt’s started hosting Palace Balls, which ushered in the American jetset and firmly cemented it as the place to see and be seen. That hasn’t changed much in the 70-plus years—in fact, the annual New Year’s Eve costume party is perhaps more over-the-top than ever with its themed decorations totaling over one million Swiss Francs each year (yes, you read that correctly).

In 2018, the Palace opened an underground nightclub called King’s Social House that closes only when the last guest leaves. The hotel also has a wine cellar with over 30,000 bottles and a tiny elevator where a sommelier can send bottles to the property's 11 restaurants, two bars, and nightclub within minutes. It’s like something straight out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory .

These little secrets add to the sense of discovery that keep Badrutt’s Palace feeling fresh, and there’s another surprise addition currently in the works: an underground pedestrian tunnel system. The Palace is situated on Via Serlas, the shortest, highest luxury retail street, lined with stores like Hermes, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Loro Piana, and Bulgari. The tunnel allows guests to bypass the traffic around these busy streets and discreetly walk underground to the town square and Chesa Veglia, the oldest farmhouse in St. Moritz that’s home to four of the hotel’s restaurant concepts.

Guests can also use this passage to access the new Serlas Wing, an expansion of the hotel designed by ACPV architects which is expected to open in December 2024. The 25 contemporary suites and guest rooms of the Serlas Wing boast high-quality materials from the alpine region, such as Dorato Valmalenco stone for the façade, locally sourced wood for the roof, and elegant bronze window details. Sleek and simple interiors with a focus on luxe textures (think: luxe oak wood finishes, Loro Piana wool-fabric wall paneling, and B&B Italia furniture upholstered in Loro Piana fabric) keep the focus on the surrounding natural beauty.

I Visit Amsterdam Every Year — Here's Why This Hotel Stands Out From the Rest

As a fourth-generation Florida girl who’s happiest in tropical places, I tend to surprise people when I tell them Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities. I appreciate the quaint Dutch architecture, charming canal-lined streets, and easygoing yet direct personality of the locals (and, OK, pancakes as a major food group).

Since our first visit to Amsterdam in 2019, my husband and I have returned every year, and sometimes several times a year. Because we prefer to “live like a local,” we’ve stayed in houseboats, canal houses, and apartments — all of which we find on Airbnb or Booking.com — but residents can only legally rent out their homes 30 days per year, so the selection and availability varies quite a bit from visit to visit.

That’s where the value of a good hotel comes in — and Amsterdam has many. On a recent visit to attend Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour , we stayed at the iconic De L’Europe . Owned by the Heineken family, this historic luxury hotel is a landmark of the city thanks to its opulent interiors and prominent location at the intersection of the Amstel River and the Rokin canal.

Amsterdam has no shortage of unique accommodations — there’s a hotel in a moving crane , suites spread across 28 old bridge houses , and even futuristic Burning Man–inspired pods inside an old church — but still, the most memorable place we've stayed is a little more understated.

Located outside the inner canal circles, Conservatorium sits between Vondelpark and the Rijksmuseum — which has a colorful little garden where my husband and I love to sit and people-watch after grabbing a latte and cinnamon bun from nearby Coffee District Willemsparkweg .

Conservatorium Hotel

• Originally built in 1897 by Dutch architect Daniël Knuttel, the Conservatorium has lived a few lives: It started as a bank, then became a music school, and has now been restored and modernized by Milan-based designer and architect Piero Lissoni into one of the leading design hotels in Amsterdam.
• The building’s neo-Gothic facade hides an ultra-modern interior with a soaring glass atrium and suspended walkways; many guest rooms circle this living room lobby, creating a cozy outdoor-but-still-indoors vibe.
• The hotel has 129 spacious and contemporary rooms and suites, including some with a duplex layout.
• Located between the Museum Quarter and Vondelpark, the property is within walking distance to Amsterdam Centrum, while also placing the best of new and old Amsterdam at your doorstep.

At this luxury hotel, even base-level Superior Rooms have elegant touches like dark hardwood floors, travertine stone bathrooms with a large rainfall shower, and a comfortable workspace for the modern traveler. At the other end of the spectrum, the entire sixth floor (with seven separate rooms) can be reserved exclusively as the Penthouse Wing for VIP guests. In between, there are a variety of elegant rooms and suites, all filled with natural light and neutral colors.

Guests and locals alike flock to Mediterranean-inspired Barbounia, which has both atrium and terrace seating. The hotel is also home to the Asian-inspired Taiko Cuisine and Taiko Bar.

Considered the “living room of Amsterdam,” the Conservatorium’s lobby is an architectural marvel. When Lissoni modernized the hotel, he encased the historic building’s interior courtyard in glass, bringing the outdoors in and creating an airy, beautifully lit space to meet, work, lounge, and enjoy a drink or bite.

The hotel also offers extensive fitness and spa facilities, including a 60-foot lap pool, and the petite in-house Van Baerle Shopping Gallery has luxury boutiques from Bonebakker, Skins Cosmetics, Bert Visser, Club Cinq, La Casa del Habano, and The Hand.

The underground (but, again, with abundant natural light from a tree-filled atrium) Akasha Spa is another highlight. Its spacious treatment facilities and gym, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, and hammam make it one of the top luxury spas in the Netherlands.

The Conservatorium has two spacious, mobility-friendly rooms. Facilities in these accommodations are on the same level and the bathrooms are wheelchair-accessible.

The hotel also has a focus on sustainability and has been Green Globe certified for 10 years.

Many of the main attractions in Amsterdam — the canal-ringed Centrum, Vondelpark, and the Museum Quarter — are within a short walk from the hotel. Plus, it’s just a 20-minute drive from the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. There’s no need to rent a car, but when in the Netherlands, consider doing as the Dutch and rent a bike to explore the city on two wheels .

The Conservatorium belongs to a collection of around 20 grand hotels known as The Set Collection. While this luxury hotel is going to be pricey no matter which way you slice it, look for occasional discounted offers on multiday stays.

First.. maybe twice in my life have I posted a review. I felt compelled to do so now. When my impulsive daughter wanted to extend her stay in the U.S., the day before her scheduled return flight, she asked me help (it would have cost her a fortune to do so roaming on her mobile phone from California). It was a Friday afternoon and I knew the travel agents at FDM would be looking forward to the weekend, but I called; Pia Toft Laustsen answered. I quickly explained (i min beste dansk) what my daughter wanted to do. Pia knew exactly what to do. It helped that she had purchased 'a changeable ticket' when she booked the flight, which makes it easier, but there are always fees. (Just know that up front; there's no reason to waste time whining about it) My daughter, of course, had to initiate the request (I could be anybody), and Pia arranged an easy way to do this via email. While my daughter handled that, Pia was looking for the cheapest option for the new flight.. without a 32 hour layover. When Pia received the change confirmation from my daughter, she had three great options for her. After a bunch of "hmmm... welll.. maybe.." back and forth with my daughter over Facebook, I told Pia (who had stayed on the line with me) my daughter's choice. Within seconds she had a contract ready and sent the invoice (betalings faktura) to my daughter (CC: to me - just to speed things up). As soon as I paid the invoice (which again took seconds because of the payment link), Pia executed the transaction, emailed my daughter her new itinerary. I think the whole thing took 20-25 minutes, from "Far... kan du ikke bare..." to "DONE!". There are a lot of discount travel bureaus out there. If you want the security of experts, choose FDM !!

FDM Travel klar med kør selv-ferier i Danmark

I samarbejde med Small Danish Hotels og Comwell tilbyder FDM Travel nu pakkerejser i Danmark. Rejsebureauet forventer at udbyde 15 rundture, men har ikke bud på, hvor mange der kan sælges.

Mens grænserne stadig er lukket og forsamlingsforbuddet forhindrer grupperejser i Danmark, melder endnu et rejsebureau sig nu med pakkerejser til det danske marked.

FDM Travel, der regnes som Danmarks nok største kør selv-rejsebureau i og udenfor Europa, er nu klar med et nyt koncept for Danmark.

Danmark byder på et væld af spændende oplevelser. Mange af disse gemmer sig i afkroge af landet, hvor bilen er den mest oplagte transportform, lyder det fra FDM Travel, der nu også inkluderer Danmark på sin destinationsliste.

Anders Iversen, administrerende direktør for FDM Travel, siger i en pressemeddelelse: ”Mange vil holde ferie i Danmark de kommende måneder. Derfor har vi har lavet en række kør selv-forslag med overnatninger og dagsprogram med forslag til oplevelser undervejs. Vi vil gerne inspirere danskerne til at søge væk fra de mest klassiske turistområder og i stedet opleve lidt mere ukendte dele af Danmark.”

Kør selv-konceptet tager udgangspunkt i det, FDM Travels kunder kender fra destinationer som USA og Europa; konkrete kør selv-ruter med forslag til ofte meget lokale oplevelser undervejs, og hvor overnatningerne er på små, charmerende hoteller eller kroer, skriver rejsebureauet og tilføjer:

”Der er dermed lagt op til en helt speciel ferie, hvor det også er muligt at få hjælp til at skræddersy valget af hoteller og dagsprogrammerne efter kundernes ønsker og behov.”

Rygeost, dansk whisky og en japansk have Oplevelserne undervejs kan være alt fra rygeost-fremstilling på Fyn, et besøg hos en lille dansk whiskyproducent, et anderledes lokalt museum eller en japansk have.

”På trods af corona oplever vi stadig en lyst til at rejse og opleve nyt. Der er en lyst til at støtte om at være turist i ens eget land. Vi har gjort det nemt at få en helt særlig dansk ferie, hvor man ser nye egne af Danmark og samtidig kan finde inspiration i vores kør selv-forslag, men stadig har mulighed for at tilpasse ferien til egne behov,” siger Anders Iversen.

I første omgang lancerer FDM Travel kør selv-forslag over Sydhavsøerne, Fyn og Lillebælt rundt og i Vestjylland, men der bygges på med yderligere kør selv-forslag.

Færger og eventuel entré/booking af oplevelser undervejs er ikke inkluderet, men her kan gæsterne gøre brug af selve FDM’s i forvejen eksisterende rabataftaler.

I samarbejde med Small Danish Hotels og Comwell Hotels Anders Iversen siger til STANDBY.DK, at FDM Travel forventer at komme op på at tilbyde 12-15 rundrejsemuligheder i Danmark. Og rejserne udbydes med overnatninger hos Small Danish Hotels, der har over 60 medlemmer landet over, samt de 16 hoteller hos Comwell Hotels.

”Men hvor mange rejser vi kan sælge i Danmark, det har jeg simpelthen ikke noget bud på nu,” siger Anders Iversen og tilføjer: ”Kør selv-rejser er noget langsigtet, de kan jo også udvides til for eksempel Østersøen Rundt.”

Will minimum wage go up for hotel workers in Glendale? What voters need to know

The Arizona Supreme Court declined on Sept. 16 to take up the case challenging the legality of an initiative to raise the minimum wage for hospitality workers in Glendale to $20 per hour. That means that voters will be able to vote on the measure, called Proposition 499, in the Nov. 5 election.

In a notice to the attorneys involved in the case that was provided to The Arizona Republic, the Supreme Court did not provide a reason for the decision, which is the latest ruling in a series of legal challenges by the city of Glendale.

In addition to the wage increase, the proposition also includes other labor regulations for hotel and event center workers, such as limits on how many rooms hotel attendants can clean in one shift before their pay is increased. The fact that Proposition 499 addresses both wages and benefits, the city argues, means that it fails to meet the " single-subject " rule in the state constitution.

In July, Worker Power, the labor union backing Proposition 499, submitted the initiative with almost double the amount of signatures necessary to get it on the ballot. Glendale City Clerk Julie Bower denied the measure on the grounds that it involved too many topics.

Worker Power then sued Glendale in Maricopa County Superior Court, which ruled the proposition legal. Glendale appealed, and on Aug. 22, the Arizona Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court ruling , allowing ballots to be printed with Proposition 499 on them.

“All the challenged provisions relate to one general subject: protecting hotel and event center employees’ wages," the decision read.

On Aug. 30, the city petitioned the Supreme Court for an expedited review of the decision, which it called "incorrect." The Supreme Court's Sept. 16 denial of the petition is the decisive ruling on whether votes for the measure will count.

"Today's Arizona Supreme Court's decision is a victory for voters and all of Glendale. Voters will have the chance, clear of any more uncertainty, to make their voices heard on Proposition 499 this November," said Brendan Walsh, executive director of Worker Power.

Adriana Rojas, a concessions worker at State Farm Stadium whose wages would be increased by Proposition 499 if it passes, also weighed in on the decision.

"I was so happy to hear today's news about the Arizona Supreme Court decision," Rojas said. "I work two jobs just to make sure I can keep a roof over my family's heads and food on the table."

"We are convinced that once Glendale voters learn how devastating Proposition 499 will be to the city’s economy they will strongly reject it," said Kim Grace Sabow, CEO of Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association, which filed an amicus brief in support of the city's position.

At the time of writing, the city of Glendale was not available to comment on the ruling.
