Ziptrek ecotours engages the young and young at heart through a unique and fun zipline experience in queenstown.

Ziptrek is a must-do, multi award-winning adventure ecotourism business renowned for delivering awareness and appreciation of the natural environment along with a healthy dose of  ziplining adventure.

Ziptrek was founded in 2001 in Whistler, Canada by Charles Steele and David Udow with a goal to provide a unique experience combining nature-based learning with a rush of adrenaline. In December 2009 Trent Yeo, a former Ziptrek Whistler employee committed to a partnership to open the first global Ziptrek operation in Queenstown, New Zealand. Yeo's background in sustainable architecture with outdoor education was a perfect fit for the business.

When our business was first established on Bobs Peak, we launched the Moa 4 line Tour. This tour incorporated four ziplines through the forest canopy connecting aerial treetop platforms (treehouses) that descended one third of the way down the mountain. In November 2010, we launched the Kea 6 line Tour which saw guests travelling all the way to the bottom of the mountain, including a beautiful walk through native beech forest. This tour now claims the world's steepest tree to tree zipline ride!   Then in 2018 we launched a slight adrenaline twist with the Kereru Tour which incorporates 2 ziplines and then finishes with a 21m drop off one of our treehouses to the forest floor.

Our eco-credentials are rapidly developing momentum and within 18 months of opening we won the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce Sustainable Business Award and received the Qualmark Enviro Gold award in May 2011.  Then came the Fairfax Media Sustainable 60 Award for Marketplace and in November 2012 the Chamber of Commerce Award for Best Tourism, Activities or Events as well as the Best Outdoor Adventure Tourism award at the 2013 Outdoors New Zealand award ceremony in Rotorua.  Most recently we won the   Environmental Tourism Award at last years Tourism Industry Award ceremony.   Ziptrek also works closely with the local community and are a patron of the Queenstown Trails Trust, Sponsor of the Tuatara enclosure at Kiwi Birdlife Park and, in the past, were in  partnership with the Queenstown Lakes Biodiesel Consortium and worked with Otago Polytechnic on their Sustainable 360 business program.

Since launching, Ziptrek Ecotours has caught the attention of global television and print media putting them in front of millions of people across countries such as Australia, UK, Germany, Brazil, China, New Zealand, Canada and the USA.

How we built it

It took approximately 4 months to build the Ziptrek course.  All the timber used in the construction is locally sourced Macrocarpa, which is naturally durable and was all zipped into place by hand.  The supporting beams of the 12 Treehouses on the course are the trunks of invasive wilding pine that was already on the course.   With the Douglas Firs in New Zealand growing at 3 times the pace of their equivalent in North America, they clearly love our climate.

Ziptrek requires limited power on course for our safety gates, our Eftpos facility and our in-house photo system which is provided year round by fitted solar panels. Whilst most of our guests choose to either walk or use the pre-existing transportation hub of the gondola to access our tour area we do have one vehicle we use on course to transport our staff and equipment, this is fuelled by Biodiesel and allows for us to be as eco-friendly as possible.

In addition to being environmentally conscious in our chosen materials on course, we also have a few programs in place to ensure we are being environmentally conscious at all times.  These include the eradication of wilding pines on the course and around Bob's Peak, a native tree and shrub planting program and stoat and possum traps around the course to name a few.

Lastly, our purchasing decisions are also centred around being environmentally aware by ensuring our staff uniform and merchandise we sell in our shop is organic cotton or NZ made where possible. All marketing material and collateral is printed on recycled paper using vegetable based inks.

Whilst on tour

Ziptrek delivers a fun eco-adventure that combines a personal guided zipline journey with sustainable education, in a receptive and engaging environment that creates lasting memories.

This represents our approach to our operation as we are educating our guests in environmental and destinational matters as well as giving them a great fun experience that they will remember for a lifetime.

Ziptrek Ecotours model was based on a fundamental education theory whereby we teach a systems thinking model of sustainability based on peer reviewed science called  ‘The Natural Step’ .  Whilst our guests zip through the trees, alongside an amazing view of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range, our guides talk on the Treehouse decks, between each zipline, about the sustainabiliy processes that we follow at Ziptrek as well as interesting information on Queenstown as a destination including Maori legends and myths.

In fact we encourage you to see what is said about us, our interpretative story and our levels of service through our Latest News or the independent social site  Tripadvisor .

ZipTrek Eco Tours – Queenstown

Yesterday we went up the Gondola again (yay!) for an afternoon of ZipTrekking through the Queenstown forest! We were really lucky to have been given some complimentary tickets, so it was a great chance to enjoy one of Queenstown’s lesser known activities.

The ZipTrek tour is found at the top of the Gondola in Queenstown (where you’ll find some incredible views, an amazing restaurant and also the luge) and it’s a quick 2 minute walk from the Gondola to the left of the building. So easy to get to, and it was an awesome way to spend the afternoon – especially as a group of 4. We were in a tour group of about 8/9 (I can’t remember) who were all lovely. There was a variety of ages in our group, and everyone had a good bit of banter and chat along the way which was lovely – some of the older people in the group were actually the first to try spinning upside down! So kudos to them!

The tour starts with dressing up – in harnesses. Surprisingly – the harnesses were actually really comfy to wear and easy to get on. But don’t worry about this too much – the two tour guides who take you round will take care of getting you strapped in. Once you’ve got it on, you barely remember it’s there. So don’t worry about uncomfortable wedgies or anything…!

ZipTrek Eco Tours Queenstown

It’s a short walk along the amazing tree-houses to the first zip-line, and they definitely ease you in. Once you’ve done the later ones – the first one seems relatively tame in comparison  We were the first ones off this Zip-Line and it was great. I’m no adrenaline junkie – and was pretty nervous about the whole thing – but actually it was great. You feel really safe when you’re attached, and the tour guides who take you round will put you at ease and encourage you if you’re a bit slow off the edge. Which I was a few times!

ZipTrek Eco Tours Queenstown

Just in general, the tour is fantastic for sightseeing a bit of the nature surrounding Queenstown – and catching some gorgeous views. The tree-houses are so scenic, and reminded me of being a kid again. I mean – how much would the ten year old you have loved this treehouse?! Some of the views along the way were just magical, as you can see above. There’s about a 20 minute walk towards the end of the tour, downhill through the forest – and you can take the time to enjoy the views during that time – incase you missed them whilst zooming through the trees earlier.

ZipTrek Eco Tours Queenstown

After your first try on the zip-wire, the tour guides (ours were TJ and Rich) will teach you some tricks along the way. If you’re brave enough, you can swivel upside down along the way (props to Paddy for doing it!) and at one point you can also do a leap of faith – type thing off one of the platforms. Definitely a bit scary – but really cool. This was Paddy’s favourite part of the tour – which doesn’t surprise me as he loves jumping out of planes and stuff.

ZipTrek Eco Tours Queenstown

If you’re a bit of a fraidy-cat (like me) the nerves do wear off as you go along – and you become more confident. I don’t look nervous at all above – which I think was our 4th zip-line. I enjoyed the 4th and 5th zip-line’s the most as they were a little longer, which meant you had more time to enjoy the views along the way.

Another thing I’d recommend (if you’re a traveller experiencing this solo, which a few people in our group were) is to swap cameras with someone. That way you can each take photos of each other on the zip-lines.

ZipTrek Eco Tours Queenstown

This was one of my favourite views of the entire tour. It was great watching people zooming through the gap in the trees – and how photogenic is the view? This was one of the longer zip-lines, and one of the most enjoyable too. You had some great views of the lake as you went across – a paraglider even floated past as I was on it- which was bizarre!

ZipTrek Eco Tours Queenstown

The last treehouse of the tour is above, which is one of the steeper zip-lines and takes you down the last leg of the mountain! And of course – special mention to TJ and Rich who were our tour guides for the afternoon, who were awesome! And Jada who we met when the tour finished! 🙂

ZipTrek Eco Tours Queenstown

If you’d like to book yourself a place on one of ZipTrek’s tours you can do so here, on their website . We’d all recommend it as a fun afternoon in Queenstown – and they run all year round which is great too. So you can either do the tour during ski season – or during summertime. As I mentioned before – it’s something that is relatively hidden – but super easy to get to and a great thing to combine with the Skyline restaurant and Gondola beforehand.

Winter evening at The Lodge Bar

Ziptrek ecotours: carbon zero since 2019.

Ziptrek Ecotours is Queenstown’s first carbon-neutral tourism business. They are renowned for delivering awareness, education and working with the natural environment.

Trent Yeo never planned to build a sustainable tourism business in Queenstown. He didn’t even plan to live here. But like so many, this (then) young visitor with a background in sustainable architecture and outdoor education, came to visit a friend on holiday, and never left. He simply abandoned his carefully thought-out business plan to take Ziptrek to the Blue Mountains of Australia.

“It was because of the drive, focus and coordination of Queenstown tourism and New Zealand’s deep storytelling and history of doing great conservation work. And because I wanted to live in a place like this anyway,” says Trent.

Man ziplining in spring with Ziptrek Eco Tours

That was fourteen years ago. Today,  Ziptrek Ecotours , is a multi-award-winning company and Queenstown’s first carbon-neutral tourism activity – certified by Ekos , a New Zealand carbon reduction programme.

He admits that for a small company like Ziptrek, which is low carbon by design - it was relatively straightforward.

“Understanding what good design was within the natural system was my key priority from the start. The model itself is basically designed to be in locations where you don’t need much energy, and then to be mega-efficient. We didn’t need to build in huge structures, we designed and built treehouses, out of timber, which sequesters carbon while it’s in use. Our ziplines are gravity-powered and it wasn’t by accident that we’re in a position that already has electric transport (the gondola) up Bob’s Peak to the start of the zipline,” says Trent.

Even so, since Ziptrek started measuring its carbon footprint over four years ago, the company has cut its carbon emissions by 61% in FY20/21, compared to the year before. For an already energy-lean operation, it took simple things like only partnering and getting supplies from like-minded companies, right down to the company lawyer, Anderson Lloyd, which is a net carbon zero law firm. “Over a year the carbon footprint of our whole business is the equivalent to four people moving to the district. So it’s miniscule.” Although tiny, there is still some carbon offsetting required to get to zero – Ziptrek only purchases the premium Ekos New Zealand carbon credits that support the Kānuka Hill project.

Ziptrek Ecotours group

Trent’s next step is to upgrade his fleet of three vehicles to electric. “Instantly we’d drop our carbon by maybe 30%.”

That will only happen once the recovery’s over and the funds are there - the last three years have not been easy for a business that relies on visitors. But what’s never changed since the business started, is the amount of effort put in to increase awareness and passion for the natural environment. It all starts with the Ziptrek team – who have to be fully committed to sustainability. “I challenge most people on their first day as I onboard: this means a lot to us, and we all have to care. You can’t go to work for a sustainability company and care, then earn money and not care on the weekends – it just doesn’t work like that.”

Then there’s the guests, who will leave their experience with a heightened understanding of the environment they have ziplined through. An exhilarating, fun ride through the forest with stunning views, becomes more memorable and meaningful given the context that goes with it. Different ziplines tell different stories. The Moa 4-line and Kea 6-line tours tell the sustainability story; the Kea tour even includes a walk through beautiful native beech forest and has the world’s steepest tree to tree zipline ride; the Kereru tour tells the conservation story, it incorporates two ziplines and finishes with an adrenaline filled 21metre drop-off from a treehouse to the forest floor.

“We build these emotionally impactful things and it’s just like classic interpretation theory right? What attitude have people felt whilst coming here that they would reflect on back home when somebody asks them. I hope that’s one of deep care and respect for our places and our people.”

That respect for its places has seen Ziptrek plant over 6000 natives in its operational area, watered by the rainwater collected in its drums. To give the native species a chance to flourish, stoat and possum traps have been installed and are monitored, as part of ongoing work with the Whakatipu Wildlife Trust . All Ziptrek’s operational requirements like cameras and electronic safety gates are run on solar energy - with occasional back-up when needed.

In the last couple of years, respect for people has seen Ziptrek support the Headlight Trust (helping people talk about mental health) and Sustainable Queenstown and KiwiHarvest to enable them to hold a food rescue dinner – their major fundraiser for the year.

All this, as well as getting the business to carbon zero for the last three years - might seem like Ziptrek Ecotours has it made, but it’s never that simple.

Ziptrek

When Trent arrived in 2006, the hardy Douglas fir trees that he built sustainable architectural treehouses amongst, were considered icons of the alpine resort. Today, as non-native species, cultural acceptance has changed and they are considered at odds with the environment. So Ziptrek’s support trees may eventually be at risk, but Trent is philosophical about the complexity of sustainability.

“I would personally test if the biological values are more or less than the impact of towers, rather than trees. But I am respectful. I just don't know - do biological values trump carbon values?”

It is the making of even more compelling sustainability stories from a business that prides itself in exploring them, giving its guests even more to think about, once the excitement and fun of the Zipline has become just a memory.
