Can we make an 8:15 am flight from Athens.

No.  Docking at 5 is not the same as leaving the ship at 5.

Even if you could leave the ship in a timeframe remotely relative to the docking time, I believe the airport is about an hour away.  Not a chance IMO.

Thanks. That was my opinion. Was hoping to be wrong.

cruisestitch

Earliest disembark time is liable to be 7 AM. Then there’s the travel time to the airport and you should allow at least an hour. If it’s an international flight, they ask you to be at the airport three hours ahead of time. I wouldn’t look at any flight earlier than noon.

Can They Make Me a Moscow Mule?

Dumb question I know, but I've been wondering this for a while, and I don't think I've seen it answered. Obviously not offered in Vintages, the Martini Bar, or World-Class, but what about at the Sunset Bar or in Michael's?

Also, Pimm's Cup, same question.

Yes to the Pimms in Michael's Club.

I was able to get a Moscow Mule at the World Class Bar on Equinox in December.

Yay! Thanks so much.

Ensemble Lounge or Passport bar (I forget) also offered them on Equinox. They now offer Ginger Beer on the ship which you need for the "mule".

The Martini bar, Sunset bar, Passport bar and Ensemble lounge all normally carry both ginger ale and ginger beer, so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).

so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).
I don't know about the knowledgeable part...I asked for a Paralyzer in a few bars on my March 2017 B2B Constellation cruise and they had no idea until I finally found a "knowledgeable" bartender midway thru my second cruise. I also asked for a Pain Killer during my 30 days on the ship and no bartender knew how to make one or the desire to google it.

QE2_Fan

Lived on these on Solstice last October! The barman in Ensemble Lounge made the best one ever. I would often stop by to get one, or he also worked at the Sunset Bar so also got them there during the day. I know Mast Bar also made them but w're not as good IMO.

Same for us...served in the copper mugs!

We're also on the Solstice. Do you remember his name?

I'm not really going on the cruise to drink, but I need a libation or two in evenings.

If you happen to find yourself on Qsine, they make a mighty fine version of the mule as well.

Can you get one on the classic package? They have become a go to of mine here at home!

What is a Moscow mule? Never heard of it.
Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. Usually served in a special copper mug.
Are they good?

On the Solstice now and I've had several in the Passport bar

Never had a problem getting anything if they had the makings, even if you needed to explain how to make it.

I like them because they're not too sweet, and I really love the spiciness of the ginger. I don't really like sweet drinks, but I can do a Pimm's cup because of the cucumber and lemon.

OCA REP

I believe that when ordering more obscure drinks, or something that you might prefer to be made a certain way, you should know the ingredients and be able to communicate that to the bartender. I would not assume a bartender is going to Google a drink recipe. Perhaps a PARALYZER or PAIN KILLER are well known cocktails, but I have never heard of them.

We enjoy a top-shelf margarita made according to a recipe we enjoy at home. A friendly discussion with the bartenders at the Mast Bar and Michael's Club, along with instructions on the proper preparation, got us service with a smile... and a nearly perfect margarita each time.

Enjoy yourself!

miched

The taste depends on the brand of ginger beer. There is Goslings, Bunderberg and Fever Tree to name the brands that they have had on board. Sometimes if you order one they may also use ginger ale. Fever Tree is rare. A 4 pack of 6.8oz bottles at the lowest price is about $5, available at Sur La Table for $8.

As with most drinks if you change the spirit it is a different drink. Use rum instead of vodka and it is a dark and stormy. That is usually made with Goslings Ginger Beer and Goslings rum. I prefer Kraken rum over the Goslings.

‘A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things’ Review: A Great British Artist’s Legacy Is Thawed and Reexamined

The life and work of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham — a figure arguably underestimated by the artistic establishment — gets its due in Mark Cousins' stirring, singular Karlovy Vary winner.

But Cousins is less interested in this kind of narrative than in more abstract, occasionally speculative reflection on her aesthetic and spiritual fixations — pivoting on a formative 1949 hike to the Grindelwald Glacier in Switzerland. There, she was mesmerized by natural geometries of rock and ice, forms and motifs that would then circle through her work over the next half-century. Such patterns and throughlines in her drawings and paintings are made plain through the simplest of techniques: unfussy, mostly chronological slideshow montages, free from narration, accentuated only by Linda Buckley’s lovely, pensive string score, permitting viewers to digest and silently respond to Barns-Graham’s art as they would in a gallery. Cousins does take the liberty, however, of talking us through her early notebooks: page upon page of intricately color-coded, mathematically conceived compositions that reveal something of Barns-Graham’s synesthesia, a crucial factor in her art that was both loosened and complicated by her increasing fascination with the natural world.

As usual, Cousins is a critical figure in his own work, with the film built around his growing individual acquaintance with, and affinity for, Barns-Graham’s story. This builds to his own spearheading of a multi-screen installation devoted to her work in Edinburgh’s Fruitmarket exhibition space, which again underlines Cousins’ sense of the permeable bond between visual art and cinema. (“I wonder what David Lynch would make of this?” he says, gazing upon one of her most darkly deconstructed glacier paintings.) Some art historians may debate Cousins’ claims of how sidelined Barns-Graham has been in the popular view of 20th-century British art — she is exhibited in the Tate, though was left out of a blockbuster Royal Academy exhibition dedicated to her contemporaries — but his film amounts to a compelling rehanging of her oeuvre either way.

A degree of self-indulgence is par for the course — as in an interlude where the filmmaker gets a tattoo of a Barns-Graham painting, musing aloud as to how much closer this does or doesn’t bring him to her — but not exactly inappropriate. “A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things” affectingly articulates how we can form highly personal relationships with artworks by people we’ve never known, celebrated or otherwise. This gives the film license for any number of unexpected angles — including one thoughtful tangent, that could even have stood greater expansion, on climate change, and the physical disappearance of landscapes that once inspired such abstract beauty. At one point, Cousins asks a biographer of Barns-Graham (who died, aged 91, in 2004) if she would have welcomed a film about herself, only to be told the artist would probably have wanted more of a say in its contents. No artist can control their legacy, and so Cousins in turn invites us to read his moving, infectiously obsessive film as we will.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Nato summit to begin as Zelensky hits out at Modi for hugging Putin during visit

LIVE – Updated at 04:00

An historic Nato summit is set to begin in Washington in the shadow of a “brutal” Russian attack on Ukrainian cities that killed and injured dozens .

The summit, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the Western alliance, is set to begin in Washington DC on Tuesday, where leaders will discuss the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and support for Kyiv .

Last week, it was revealed Nato allies had agreed to fund military aid for Ukraine with 40 billion euros ($43 billion) over the next year.

It comes as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said it was a “huge disappointment” to see Indian prime minister Narendra Modi embrace Vladimir Putin.

“It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day,” Mr Zelensky said.

It comes as US president Joe Biden slammed Russian “brutality” after dozens of missiles fired by Russia struck a number of cities across the country, killing at least 43 people and wounding more than 190.

Kyiv says it has unequivocal evidence to prove children's hospital hit by Russian missile

The Ukrainian State Security Service (SBU) has presented new evidence it says proves that Kyiv’s main children’s hospital had been directly hit by a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile.

“The experts’ conclusions are unequivocal, it was a direct strike,” the SBU said on Telegram.

It shared images of a missile engine fragment it said was found at the site. The SBU added that analysis of trajectory and nature of damage caused prove the was a direct strike.

What is the Nato summit and why is it important for Ukraine?

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Nato counterparts are meeting in Washington this week to mark the 75th anniversary of the world’s biggest security organization just as Russia presses its advantage on the battlefield in Ukraine .

The three-day summit, which begins today, will focus on ways to reassure Ukraine of Nato’s enduring support and offer some hope to its war-weary citizens that their country might survive the biggest land conflict in Europe in decades.

Much of what Nato can do for Ukraine, and indeed for global security, is misunderstood. Often the alliance is thought of as the sum of all US relations with its European partners, from imposing sanctions and other costs on Russia to sending arms and ammunition.

But as an organization, its brief is limited to the defence by military means of its 32 member countries — the sacred Three Musketeers-like vow of all for one, one for all — and a commitment to help keep the peace in Europe and North America.

What is the Nato military alliance and how is it helping Ukraine?

Japan must strengthen Nato ties to safeguard global peace, PM says

Russia’s deepening military cooperation with North Korea has underlined the need for Japan to forge closer ties with Nato, the country’s leader warned.

Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida also expressed concern over Beijing’s alleged role in aiding Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

“The securities of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific are inseparable, and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its deepened military cooperation with North Korea are strong reminders of that,” Mr Kishida said.

“Japan is determined to strengthen its cooperation with Nato and its partners,” he added.

Why does it take Russia bombing a children’s hospital to make us care about Ukraine?

Modi under fire for bear-hugging ‘mass murderer’ Putin during Moscow summit

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has been criticised for greeting Vladimir Putin with his signature bear hug during their Moscow summit, even as he offered veiled criticism of Russia’s latest missile bombardment of civilians in Ukraine.

The Modi government’s carefully balanced policy on the Ukraine war – neither criticising nor condoning it, and increasing trade links with Russia while also courting stronger ties to the West – led some analysts to question just how warmly the two would interact during Mr Modi’s visit to Moscow.

Mr Modi arrived to a red-carpet welcome at Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow on Monday, and later the two leaders went for a hug after a brief handshake as the Indian prime minister arrrived at Mr Putin’s residence at Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow.

Why China is conducting military exercises in Belarus

The Chinese military has begun joint drills in Belarus that are being held over the next 11 days in Brest, close to the border with Nato state Poland.

The joint military exercises by two of Russia’s most important allies come after Belarus became the 10th member of the China-led Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) during its 24th meeting of heads of council in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Belarus’s government said the drills “will allow … the laying of a foundation for further development of Belarusian-Chinese relations in the field of joint training of troops”.

Zelensky to deliver address at Washington’s Reagan Institute

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy will deliver an address at the Ronald Reagan Institute in Washington as he looks to drum up more support for the war against Russia’s invasion during this week’s Nato summit.

“President Reagan understood the Soviet Union and Russia. He knew that free countries must stand together with confidence whenever tyranny is on the move,” Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, said.

Nato is not expected to invite Ukraine to become a member at this year’s 9 July - 11 July gathering. Many Nato countries want to state that Ukraine’s path to membership is “irreversible” but alliance members are still wrangling over the summit declaration.

Why does it take Russia bombing a children’s hospital to make us care about Ukraine? We must be better

“Putin Bombs Cancer Kids”. The headline in the Daily Mirror is as powerful as it is succinct, and shows how, even in a vicious conflict such as Ukraine, where the rules of war are routinely ignored, some actions can still “cut through”.

Usually, Putin’s crimes against humanity, at least after the initial shock of the invasion, became mere background noise to those in the West.

The targeting of the largest paediatric unit in the country was indeed a heinous act, and a cynical one that was ordered by Vladimir Putin, the latest in his pitiless war of aggression in Ukraine. Sometimes you wonder whether the Kremlin is playing some dark satirical game when it tries to pass off a children’s hospital in Kyiv as a Ukrainian air base.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told Vladimir Putin the death of children is “very painful” following Moscow’s attack on a children’s hospital in Ukraine.

Although not a direct reference to the attack, Mr Modi said the death of innocent children in war, conflict or a terrorist attack was “very painful”.

Mr Modi also told Mr Putin that a solution to the war in Ukraine “cannot be found on the battlefield. We have to find peace through talks”. Russia has denied attacking the children’s hospital in Ukraine’s capital.

Former PrivatBank owner accused in fraud case left Ukraine illegally, investigators say

Ukraine‘s State Bureau of Investigation was looking into Gennadiy Bogolyubov, former co-owner of PrivatBank, who is suspected of using another person’s passport to leave Ukraine in June amid separate fraud allegations, it said on Tuesday.

PrivatBank, Ukraine‘s largest lender, accused former co-owners Bogolyubov and Ihor Kolomoisky in a lawsuit filed in London of orchestrating sham loans and supply agreements between 2013 and 2014 to defraud the bank on an “epic scale”. Ukraine nationalised the bank in 2016.

Bogolyubov and Kolomoisky both deny wrongdoing. They say there was no misappropriation from PrivatBank, and that the bank has no evidence of their involvement in alleged fraud.

Bogolyubov, accused by the bank of helping orchestrate $2 billion worth of fraud, left Ukraine on June 24 by train to Poland, illegally using the passport of another Ukrainian, the investigators said.

A border crossing official who helped him had been detained, they added.

The Privatbank case has been closely watched by politicians and investors as a test of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s willingness to pursue reforms and tackle the corruption which has blighted Ukraine for years, amid its ongoing war with Russia.

Kolomoisky has been in custody in Ukraine on suspicion of fraud since 2023.

Bogolyubov travelled onward to Austria from Poland, the Ukrainska Pravda online news outlet reported, citing sources. His press service told Pravda he left the country legally.

Ukraine armed forces chief: We will never forgive the killing of peaceful people

Ukrainian armed forces chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has vowed to “never forgive the killing and terror of peaceful people” as the country holds a day of mourning following mass Russian strikes yesterday.

At least 41 people were killed yesterday in Kyiv and across Ukraine, while nearly 200 were wounded. Rescue operations are ongoing to find those still buried under the rubble.

“Yesterday’s massive missile attack on the cities of Ukraine shocked the whole world with its brutality and insidiousness,” General Syrskyi wrote on Telegram

“Russian terrorists cynically and purposefully struck civilian objects, in particular, the ‘Okhmatdyt’ children’s hospital.

“Today, on the day of mourning for the innocent victims of our capital and other cities of Ukraine, I bow my head together with the entire Ukrainian people as a sign of bright memory.

“We, Ukrainian soldiers, will never forgive the killing and terror of peaceful people. War crimes have no statute of limitations, and all those involved will inevitably be punished! Glory to Ukraine!”

Two more bodies recovered in kyiv.

The bodies of two women have been recovered from the debris of a destroyed building in Kyiv after yesterday’s attacks, Ukraine’s state emergency service has reported.

It takes the total death toll in the capital to 29 with 117 injuries, 10 of whom are children, according to the city’s mayor Vitaliy Klitschko.

Search operations in the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital have concluded, they added. Two were killed and 32 injured in that attack.

A lethal strike on a children’s hospital in Ukraine‘s capital, Kyiv, was likely caused by a direct hit from a Russian missile, the head of the United Nations human rights monitoring mission has said, citing the organisation’s own analysis.

“Analysis of the video footage and an assessment made at the incident site indicates a high likelihood that the children’s hospital suffered a direct hit rather than receiving damage due to an intercepted weapon system,” said Danielle Bell, head of mission for the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.

She added that her team, who visited the site on Monday, could not make a final determination but that the missile appeared to have been launched by the Russian Federation.

One dead and two injured in strike on Russian border city

At least one person has been killed and two injured in an alleged Ukrainian strike in Belgorod city, the local mayor has claimed.

Valentin Demidov claimed on Telegram that the city was “attacked by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. One person died and two were injured”.

He posted pictures seen below of the aftermath of the site.

Russia will follow Nato summit very closely, Kremlin says

The Kremlin has said it would closely follow this week’s Nato summit because the alliance had declared Moscow its enemy and sought to defeat Russia.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Russia considered Nato, which is holding a summit in Washington, to be fully involved in the conflict in Ukraine.

Body of child found in Kyiv as search ongoing

The body of a young boy has been found beneath the rubble of a building in Kyiv destroyed by a Russian missile, the local emergency services have reported, as search operations are ongoing in the capital following mass strikes yesterday.

The boy was found in the Shevchenkivs’kyi district of the city in the northwest.

The death toll for the capital was later amended to 27 dead, including four children, while 117 people were injured. Seven people have been rescued at the time of writing.

“The elimination of consequences is still ongoing at 3 locations. 377 rescuers and 76 units of emergency services were involved at the scene,” the state emergency service wrote on Telegram.

Lithuanian FM: This is the moment we prove Putin wrong

Lithuanian foreign minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has called on Nato to “prove Putin wrong” and pledge scores of weapons to Ukraine after one of the deadliest days of Russian strikes on the country since the war began.

Ahead of the 75th Nato anniversary being held in Washington today, Mr Landsbergis wrote: “Putin doesn’t need to ‘test our response’ any more. He expects our response will be weak, and he wants the world to see how predictable we are.

“This is the moment to prove him wrong by giving Ukraine our best weapons and permission to hit military targets as deep as is necessary.”

Alliance membership for Ukraine has already been ruled out but Kyiv will be hoping for as many weapons pledges as possible.

Here are some of the latest photos from Ukraine

Good morning.

Below are some of the latest photos coming out of Ukraine.

Russian airports restrict flights after drone attack – report

Russia’s Astrakhan and Volgograd airports restricted flights this morning after a suspected Ukrainian drone attack, Russian news agencies reported.

Russia’s air defence systems destroyed 38 drones that Ukraine launched overnight on several Russian regions, Russia’s defence ministry said earlier.

Additionally, one person reportedly died while two power substations and an oil depot caught fire, after Ukraine launched tens of drones in attacks on several regions.

Russian air defence systems claim to have destroyed 38 drones, including 21 over the southern region of Rostov and seven over Kursk, both of which border Ukraine, the Russian defence ministry said.

The total number of drones launched by Ukraine was not immediately clear.

Explosions were heard in the town of Kalach-on-the-Don in Russia’s southern region of Volgograd, said the Baza Telegram channel, which has sources in Russian law enforcement.

In a Telegram post, regional governor Andrei Bocharov said a power sub-station and an oil depot were set ablaze by falling debris from drones destroyed by Russian air defence systems.

Kremlin denies hospital attack

The Kremlin said Kyiv’s claim Russian troops targeted the hospital was “absolutely untrue” and the destruction was caused by Ukrainian air defence missiles.

A spokesperson said: “The objectives of the strike have been achieved. Designated targets are hit. Statements by representatives of the Kyiv regime about an allegedly intentional missile strike by Russia on civilian targets are absolutely untrue.”

In response to the attack, Ukraine’s defence minister Rustem Umerov urged the country’s allies to provide more air defence technology to the country.

“Our defence capabilities are still insufficient. We need more air defence systems,” Mr Umerov said on Telegram.

UN says Russian missile attacks ‘abominable, particularly shocking’

The United Nations has called an emergency meeting on the Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities yesterday which killed 41 people and condemned them as “shocking”.

“Among the victims were Ukraine’s sickest children,” said Volker Türk, the UN human rights commissioner. A UN team visited the hospital shortly after it was hit and saw the children receiving cancer treatments in hospital beds set up outdoors, he added. “This is abominable, and I implore those with influence to do everything in their power to ensure these attacks stop immediately,” Mr Türk said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned yesterday’s missile strikes as “particularly shocking”, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

The UN Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting on the attacks for Tuesday at the request of France and Ecuador. Russia, which holds the council’s rotating presidency this month, will preside at the meeting.

The International Criminal Court’s founding charter says it is a war crime to intentionally attack “hospitals and places where the sick and wounded are collected, provided they are not military objectives.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Security Service said it found wreckage from a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile at the site and opened proceedings on war crime charges. The Kh-101 is an air-launched missile that flies low to avoid detection by radar. Ukraine said it shot down 11 of 13 Kh-101 missiles launched yesterday.

Debris from missile attack fell into patients’s open chest mid-surgery – Ukrainian minister

The Russian hypersonic missile attack on the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital yesterday caused debris to fall into heart patients’ open chests in the middle of surgery, reported The Associated Press . Cancer patients had their beds wheeled into parks and onto the streets.

At the time of the strike, three heart operations were being performed, leading to the contamination of the patients’ open chests with blast debris, health minister Viktor Liashko said.

The hospital lost water, light and oxygen, and the patients were transferred to other hospitals, he told Ukrainian television.

Rescuers searched for victims under the rubble of a partially collapsed, two-story wing of the facility, at the hospital that was hit by a missile. At the main 10-story building, windows and doors were blown out, and walls were blackened. Blood was spattered on the floor in one room.

The intensive care unit, operating theaters and oncology departments all were damaged, officials said.Rescuers formed a line, passing bricks and other debris to each other as they sifted through rubble. Smoke rose from the building, and volunteers and emergency crews worked in protective masks. Some mothers were seen carrying their children away on their backs, while others waited in the courtyard with their children as calls to doctors’ phones rang unanswered.

It was Russia’s heaviest bombardment of Kyiv in almost four months, hitting seven of the city’s 10 districts.

Zelensky condemns Modi’s Russian visit as Putin’s forces attack children

Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s display of hugging Vladimir Putin on the same day Russian forces bombarded Ukrainian cities, killing dozens of people.

“In Ukraine today, 37 people were killed, three of whom were children, and 170 were injured, including 13 children, as a result of Russia’s brutal missile strike. A Russian missile struck the largest children’s hospital in Ukraine, targeting young cancer patients. Many were buried under the rubble,” he said on X, sharing photos of the attack’s impact on children and families.

“It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day,” he said.

Biden says deadly missile strikes are 'horrific reminder of Russia's brutality'

Joe Biden said deadly Russian missile strikes in Ukraine, including on the main children’s hospital in Kyiv, were “a horrific reminder of Russia’s brutality.”

“Russia’s missile strikes that today killed dozens of Ukrainian civilians and caused damage and casualties at Kyiv’s largest children’s hospital are a horrific reminder of Russia’s brutality,” Mr Biden said in a statement released by the White House.

The US president said Washington and its Nato allies will be announcing this week new measures to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences.

“It is critical that the world continues to stand with Ukraine at this important moment and that we not ignore Russian aggression,” Mr Biden said.

His remarks come as president Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine would retaliate and called on Kyiv’s Western allies to give a firm response to the attack.

Fire at Russian power substation after Ukraine drone attack

A fire broke out at a power substation in Russia’s Rostov region after Ukraine launched “tens” of drones overnight, Vasily Golubev, governor of the southern Russia region that borders Ukraine said today.

“As a result of an air attack in the Rodionovo-Nesvetaysky district, two transformers caught fire at a power substation,” Golubev said, adding that air defence systems destroyed tens of drones.

Ukrainian Elina Svitolina breaks down in tears at Wimbledon over missile strikes on Kyiv

Elina Svitolina broke down in tears after winning her fourth round match at Wimbledon after at least 20 Ukrainians were killed following a major Russian missile attack on Kyiv.

Many more were left injured on Monday, officials said, with one missile striking a large children’s hospital in the capital Kyiv.

Svitolina played with a black ribbon on her white top throughout the match on No.2 Court, with the 21st seed triumphing over Xinyu Wang 6-2, 6-1 after a fine performance.

And as emergency crews search the rubble for casualties back in Ukraine after the latest Russian barrage, Svitolina opened up on court about the difficulty in playing under the circumstances.

”For sure it was a good performance from my side,” Svitolina said, acknowledging her team courtside, including her partner and fellow player Gael Monfils . “It’s a very difficult day today for Ukrainian people.”

Jack Rathborn reports from Wimbledon:

At least 41 killed in Russia’s attack on children’s hospital in Kyiv

At least 41 civilians have been killed as Russia blasted the main children’s hospital in Kyiv with a missile in broad daylight yesterday, marking its deadliest wave of air strikes for months.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 100 buildings were damaged in the wave of attacks, including the children’s hospital and a maternity centre in Kyiv, children’s nurseries and a business centre and homes.

“The Russian terrorists must answer for this,” he wrote. “Being concerned does not stop terror. Condolences are not a weapon.”

Damage was reported in the central cities of Kryvyi Rih and Dnipro and two eastern cities, Ukraine’s interior ministry said.

Ukraine’s air defences shot down 30 of 38 missiles, the air force said.

An online video showed a missile falling towards the children’s hospital followed by a large explosion. The location of the video was verified from visible landmarks. The Russian forces likely used the Kh-101 cruise missile, said the Security Service of Ukraine, identifying the projectile.

Kyiv’s military authorities said 27 people had died in the capital, including three children, and 82 were wounded in the main missile volley and a strike that came two hours later.

Parents holding babies walked in the street outside the hospital, dazed and sobbing after the rare daylight aerial attack. Windows had been smashed and panels ripped off, and hundreds of Kyiv residents were helping to clear debris.

“It was scary. I couldn’t breathe, I was trying to cover (my baby). I was trying to cover him with this cloth so that he could breathe,” Svitlana Kravchenko, 33, said.

Russia displaying callous audacity, says Amnesty after Ohmatdyt strike

Russia is seeking deflection from responsibility for killing civilians in Ukraine, the Amnesty International said after a Russian missile tore through Ohmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, sending hundreds of patients out on the streets.

“The destruction of hospitals, as well as residential buildings and essential infrastructure are abhorrent, and any acts that target or disregard civilians must be unequivocally condemned. The evidence now widely available and some of it verified by Amnesty International experts, including videos of the strike that destroyed the Ohmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, consistently suggests that the hospital was hit by an inbound Russian cruise missile,” said Marie Struthers, Amnesty International’s director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

She added: “Russian attempts to put the blame on Ukrainian air defence display a callous audacity, which seeks to deflect from Russia’s responsibility for killing civilians and destroying medical facilities.”

“The chilling images we have seen from the sites of two rounds of attacks in Kyiv today are a reminder of the cruelty of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The number of civilians killed across the country is growing all the time, including in other missile strikes today, on Kryvyi Rih, Pokrovsk, Dnipro, Kramatorsk, and Slovyansk,” the top human rights body’s regional director said.

“These brutal acts will not stop until those committing crimes under international law know that they will be held individually responsible. This tragic day must serve as yet another urgent alarm for the entire international community, that immediate and effective action is needed for justice to be served,” she said.

China and Belarus hold ‘anti-terror’ military drills on Polish border

Chinese soldiers have landed in Belarus to take part in “anti-terror” military drills on the border with Poland.

Belarus’ Ministry of Defence said that the 11-day “joint anti-terrorist exercise” would start on Monday and “improve coordination between Belarusian and Chinese units”. Chinese media said the exercises would be held in Brest, on the Polish border.

Photographs from the Baranovichi air base on Saturday, about 100 miles south-west of Minsk, showed Chinese soldiers wearing forage caps as they unloaded their equipment from a single Xian Y-20, a heavy strategic airlifter nicknamed “Chubby Girl”.

Jen Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, was awarded the presidential medal of freedom by President Joe Biden during the ceremony in Washington tonight.

But what exactly is the honour?

In short, the medal of freedom is the highest civilian honour in the US.

It is presented to individuals who have made "exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavours," the White House website states.

Other recipients of the medal of freedom from this year include former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh.

Presenting Mr Stoltenberg with the medal earlier tonight, Mr Biden said: "NATO's alliance of nations is also made up of leaders.

"And one person in particular has done an extraordinary job of leading NATO for the last decade.

"So much of the progress made by the alliance is thanks to the secretary. He is a man of integrity, intellectual rigour and a diplomat who works with leaders across the political spectrum."

Speaking directly to Mr Stoltenberg, Mr Biden said: "Secretary, you have guided this alliance through one of its most consequential periods in its history...

"Today NATO is stronger, and more energised than when you began."

Mr Stoltenberg is due to stay on as secretary general until October after the 31 NATO states decided to keep him on rather than opting for a replacement.

President Joe Biden's speech commemorating the 75th anniversary of NATO was a "passionate reaffirmation of the power of the alliance," our US correspondent Mark Stone says.

Stone says surrounded by pomp and ceremony, Mr Biden defended the importance of NATO, which he said has only been strengthened since Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine.

"What is clear is that behind all of what we have watched is it is a significant challenge," Stone says.

"On its 75th birthday, NATO faces the greatest challenge it has ever faced, and it is clear to is that Vladimir Putin believes has the upper hand.

"What we did not hear from President Biden is any talk of Ukraine joining NATO immediately, but that will be a focus of discussions over the next few days."

The "elephant in the room" during the speech was Mr Biden's performance, Stone goes on to say.

The US president has been under intense pressure over the last few days to prove he is capable to remain in the Oval Office following a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.

But, according to Stone, the US leader "appeared to be pretty word-perfect" speaking with the help of an autocue.

"I am sure his team will be pretty pleased in what was a very important moment for him," says Stone.

President Joe Biden has just finished speaking at a NATO summit in Washington.

During his speech, he announced that the US and other NATO allies will send Ukraine dozens of air defence systems in the coming months - including at least four of the powerful Patriot systems that Kyiv has been desperately seeking.

According to the statement, the US, Germany and Romania will send Ukraine additional Patriot batteries, while the Netherlands and others will provide Patriot components to make up one more battery.

While Italy will provide a SAMP-T air defence system.

Other nations, including Canada, Norway, Spain and the UK, will provide a number of other systems that will help Ukraine expand its coverage.

Earlier today, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a social media post that air defence is still his country's key request, adding he is "confident we will succeed" in being given them.

US President Joe Biden is now speaking at a NATO summit in Washington.

Mr Biden begins his speech by speaking about how NATO was formed following the Second World War in a bid to "answer threats at once" and to "prevent future wars and protect democracy".

Speaking about the growth of NATO, he says that "Finland and Sweden joined the alliance not just because their leaders thought it, but because their citizens called for it, in overwhelming number".

Mr Biden adds that Russian President Vladimir Putin "wants nothing less than Ukraine's total subjection".

"Make no mistake, Russia is losing this war," he says.

He tells the room that "Putin won't stop at Ukraine" but that NATO's full support can help Ukraine stop Putin's aggression.

Moving on to support for Ukraine, the US president says the country will go "to the front of the line" when it comes to receiving air defence intercept systems from the US, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Italy.

Mr Biden says the US will help provide a "historic donation of air defence equipment", with "dozens" of additional tactical air defence systems.

Mr Biden then quotes former US president Ronald Reagan: "If our fellow democracies are not secure, we cannot be secure."

He then presents Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary-general, with the presidential medal of freedom.

We're still waiting for US President Joe Biden to take to the stage at the NATO summit in Washington.

Currently, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary-general, is speaking.

He says that NATO - celebrating its 75th year - is the "safest, most strong and longest lasting alliance in history".

You can follow along by watching the live stream above.

A state-owned arms manufacturer from Ukraine has opened its first foreign office in Washington.

Ukroboronprom is seeking to work more closely with allies to step up weapons production and counter Russia's invasion.

"Its main task is to promote joint US-Ukrainian defence projects and enhance our integration into NATO's defence industrial base," strategic industries minister Oleksandr Kamyshin said on X.

For context: Ukraine has been trying to build up its domestic armaments sector since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 and has urged its allies to agree joint ventures, invest in Ukrainian businesses, and place orders for Ukrainian weapons.

Last year, Kyiv agreed with two US firms to jointly manufacture vital 155mm artillery shells in Ukraine, although production was not expected to start for at least two years.

Last month, Ukroboronprom launched a partnership with German defence conglomerate Rheinmetall that saw a workshop established in Ukraine for the repair and production of armoured vehicles.

Ukraine's foreign minister reiterated that an agreement on an end to the war in Ukraine should be reached with Kyiv's participation.

It follows Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban holding talks on a potential peace deal in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, angering some EU leaders who warned against appeasing Moscow.

It was the first meeting of an EU leader with Putin in Moscow since April 2022.

"Our position - no agreements on Ukraine without Ukraine," Dmytro Kuleba told national TV today.

Yesterday, Ukraine's foreign ministry released a statement saying their policy "remains unshakable" and they called on "all states to observe it strictly".

Mr Orban has been a critic of Western military aid to Kyiv and the sanctions placed against Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago.

"We cannot sit back and wait for the war to miraculously end," he wrote on X.

The director of Ukraine's largest children's hospital, hit on Monday by a deadly missile strike blamed on Russia, said the attack is "beyond the limits of humanity".

Dr Volodymyr Zhovnir spoke to the UN Security Council today, where he said more two adults were killed and more than 300 people were injured in the attack.

Ukraine published photos of what it said were recovered fragments of a Russia cruise missile that hit the hospital in Kyiv.

Sky News have been able to verify that the missile that struck the hospital was indeed launched by Russia ( see 19.30pm post ).

“At 10.42am we felt a powerful explosion," said Dr Zhovnir.

"The ground shook and the floor trembled. Both children and adults screamed and cried from fear and the wounded from pain. It was real hell.

"We could hear people crying out for help from beneath the rubble."

He also listed what was destroyed, with 24 hospital departments damaged including oncology, intensive care, operating rooms, and prenatal care.

"To strike a children’s hospital where children are treated for cancer and other heavy diseases is not just a war crime. It is far beyond the limits of humanity," he added.

Ukraine has published what it says is "unequivocal" evidence a Russian missile hit Kyiv's largest children's hospital.

The Okhmatdyt Hospital treats 20,000 people a year. A two-storey wing helping children with cancer was destroyed in the attack.

It's the deadliest airstrike in Ukraine for months - on the eve of a NATO summit and as China and Belarus start military exercises near the Polish border - what reaction can we expect?

Niall Paterson is joined by Jimmy Rushton, a Kyiv-based journalist and defence analyst, to hear more about the damage and the reaction from those in Ukraine's capital. Plus, he speaks to our defence and security editor Deborah Haynes.
