Colombia Luxury Tours

Exclusive insider journey to Colombia’s highlights

Bogota | Coffee Region | Cartagena

When to go?

COLOMBIA'S HIGHLIGHTS

A unique city of contrasts, Bogotá will present travelers with a hectic balance between the contemporary and the traditional; the peaceful and the chaotic. Take in centuries-old plazas and churches from the colonial period that stand in the shadows of towering skyscrapers. Visit the Gold Museum to learn about Colombia’s pre-Hispanic history. At the Botero museum, guests may have the unique chance to enjoy a special guided tour with a relative of Colombia’s most renowned painter, Fernando Botero. In Zonas G and T, enjoy private visits to trendy ateliers, galleries, and studios before savoring Colombian and international cuisine at some of the top restaurants in the city’s gastronomic scene.

Coffee Region

Also known as the Coffee Triangle, the coffee region is located in a lush, rural area of Colombia. The majority of Colombian coffee is produced here and is considered some of the best coffee in the world. As heavenly as the coffee is, nature is the real draw of this beautiful area. The combination of lush green valleys, and impressive peaks make it the ideal place for outdoor adventures. Ride on horseback through the rolling hills and rich farmland of private estates that produce delicious crops like pineapple and citrus fruit in addition to the famous coffee. Enjoy a spectacular trek through the high Andean cloud and pine forest of Valle de Cocora, named after a local indigenous princess. Here, in addition to a variety of fauna, travelers will also find the Quindío wax palm, the tallest species of palm tree that grows to nearly 200 feet.

A sizzling, colorful contrast to the cooler, tranquil coffee region, Cartagena’s vibrant Caribbean culture guarantees a good time. This UNESCO World Heritage Site enchants visitors with its cobblestoned streets and beautiful colonial architecture. Surrounded by Las Murallas and dotted with churches, monasteries, plazas, palaces, and mansions, Cartagena’s charming old town is a highlight of a luxury tour to Colombia. Travelers can enjoy a private rum tasting with a sommelier who will explain the spirit’s ingredients, distillery process, and history. Learn about Cartagena’s extraordinary cultural heritage through the rich, exuberant cuisine at the city’s high-end restaurants or in a private cooking class with a personal chef. Explore another essential part of Colombian culture at a privately-owned 16th century home with an exciting personal salsa lesson from a professional dancer.

Rosario Islands

Just off of the coast of Cartagena in the clear Caribbean waters, the Rosario Islands boast relaxing beaches, an abundance of marine life, and expansive coral reefs. Guests can visit the islands as a day trip from Cartagena or spend a few nights in one of the treetop or sea-side bungalows at Hotel Las Islas on Baru. This luxury property boasts a private beach and bay where guests can enjoy various marine activities, including stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling. After a day of sun and sea, guests can enjoy some pampering in the full-service spa, sip a cocktail at the rooftop bar, or savor Caribbean delicacies in any one of the three restaurants.

A city with a controversial past as the home of Pablo Escobar, Medellín has reinvented itself as a creative, progressive place with friendly people. Located in a mountain valley with a pleasant temperate climate, the city of the “eternal spring” is also known for having the first metrocable in South America. The metrocable is a type of public transit system similar to a gondola lift, and it still transports locals and visitors alike up and down the steep hills. After a ride over the colorful rooftops of the city on the metrocable, visit Plaza Botero to see sculptures by Fernando Botero, who was born in Medellín and became Colombia’s most famous artist. With an expert guide, travel about 1 hour outside of the city to the ruins of La Catedral Prison, built to hold Pablo Escobar according to his rather extravagant specifications.

In Colombia, nature-lovers and trekking enthusiasts who like to get off the beaten path visit Tayrona National Park. Here, the lush Colombian jungle meets the sparkling Caribbean sea. Hike through dense forest on the former lands of the Tayrona tribe before arriving at some of the most stunning beaches in Colombia. In the forest, travelers can find over 100 different mammal species, including howler monkeys, pumas, deer, and various bat species. Bird watchers will delight in the 300 plus species of aviary species, such as the famous condors and white eagles.

Colombia Luxury Tours and Travel

Wherever your Colombia tour takes you, music and dance will accompany the journey. Colombia’s varied dance and music heritage blends indigenous, African, Cuban, Caribbean, and European influences, and is an integral part of every region from the high Andes to Caribbean beaches.

Costumed dancers perform energetically in the UNESCO World Heritage city of  Cartagena ’s Bolivar park. This impressive 16th-century city on the Caribbean coast exudes old-world charm. Other colonial towns like  Santa Marta ,  Popayán ,  Barichara , and  Villa de Leyva  are great examples of the country’s Spanish heritage. Santa Marta is also Colombia’s most popular beach town, and is part of the Caribbean coast in which cumbia, the country’s most popular dance style emerged. Another beach town,  Barranquilla , is best known for its fantastic annual carnival.

One of Colombia’s most interesting archaeological sites is  San Agustín , with chiseled stone sculptures weighing up to five tonnes scattered over a wide landscape. Further north is  Tierradentro , which has underground rock tombs covered with striking carvings and paintings similar to  San Agustín . Nearby is the city of  Cali , where salsa music and dancing often spill into the streets.

Colombia’s most famous export, coffee, is grown in the  Eje Cafetero  or the  Coffee Region , around lovely towns like  Finlandia  and  Salento . This region also has charming cities like  Armenia ,  Pereira , and  Medellín . The latter is worth visiting, for its botanical gardens, and for the Museum of Antioquia and Plaza Botero, to witness celebrated Colombian sculptor  Fernando Botero ’s works. Also part of the coffee triangle is  Pitalito , considered producer of Colombia’s best coffee, and the  Cocora Valley  with its 200-foot-high Quindío wax palm trees, and a promised hike into the cloud forest of  Los Nevados National Natural Park . No trip to Colombia is complete without an experience of its rainforests, bordering the Amazon, or its national parks and protected areas, which are a hotbed of ecotourism initiatives.

Also in the mountains is the capital city of  Bogotá  crowded with medieval cathedrals, modern buildings, and bustling marketplaces. Sample  arepas  (flat bread) and  empanadas  (dumplings) at street carts, and don’t miss out on  bandeja paisa  a local classic of rice, beans, meats, a fried egg, fried bananas, avocado, and  arepa .

Sabrosura  is a local Colombian concept, which roughly translates to a state of joy, a feeling of positivity and beauty. It’s a state you will achieve when you’ve experienced an authentic and perfectly planned trip to Colombia—one designed and executed by Enchanting Travels.

If you have questions such as when is the best time to visit Colombia , or the activities you can do there, our experts can help. Get in touch with us for a personalized travel experience based on your interests.

  • In coastal regions such as  Cartagena , expect a  tropical climate  with high humidity and temperatures around 86°F (30°C)
  • High-altitude cities such as  Bogota  enjoy a  milder climate  with average temperatures of 57°F (14°C)
  • Cities in the  Andean region , such as Barichara, Bucaramanga, Medellín and Villa de Leyva, and the Coffee Triangle, boast  spring-like weather  throughout the year
  • The  Amazon basin  is typically  hot and humid  all year round

Thanks to these diverse climates, Colombia is a year-round destination with something for everyone. Read more about the  weather in Colombia .

The best time of the year to visit Colombia depends on your chosen destinations and preferences. The country has  two distinctive seasons  – dry and wet, and the climate varies by region. The  dry season , from  December to March and June to August,  is most popular with travelers for offering pleasant weather conditions across Colombia, especially in cities and high-altitude destinations. Coastal areas like Cartagena and Tayrona National Park are attractive throughout the year. However,  most travelers prefer to visit in the dry season. Our travel consultants can advise you further on the ideal time for your trip based on your specific interests. Get in touch with us through our  booking form or call  +1 888 263 2574 .

While traveling in Colombia, we recommend carrying  Colombian Pesos  (Col$), and  credit and debit cards . The weather varies across regions, so pack  additional layers of clothing  and a light jacket for the high altitudes. For  beaches , include swimwear, a sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen. A rain jacket or umbrella is helpful in the wet season. If you are visiting forests, carry insect repellent. It is also a good idea to bring medicines for emergencies. Cuban Beach | South America

Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, ranking first in bird and orchid species diversity.

Plan South America | El Choco | Colombia

After more than half a century of civil war, it is out with leftist guerrillas and in with the comfortable coffee haciendas , tropical colonial cities, Caribbean island retreats and innovative food and art scenes.

A luxury trip to Colombia offers boundless adventure and a rich, layered culture. Its residents are often cited as South America’s warmest and most charismatic people.

While Cartagena, on the Caribbean coast, and the breathtaking central coffee region are both unmissable, some of Colombia’s most rewarding parts are off the beaten path.

Those with an appetite for adventure should look to Mompox, a 500-year old colonial town on the banks of the River Magdalena; Las Amazonas, for its staggering biodiversity; the wild Pacific region of El Chocó for its gastronomy, beaches, whales and national parks; Barichara, for its churches, cobbled streets and artisans; and the vast wetlands known as Los Llanos, shared between Colombia and Venezuela.

Colombia’s food scene reflects its rich agricultural heritage and diverse ecosystems.

Traditional dishes like arepas , cornmeal cakes often stuffed or topped with cheese, meats, or eggs, are ubiquitous.

Coastal regions excel in seafood, with dishes like ceviche and fish stews. Inland, don’t miss the  bandeja paisa , a hearty plate of beans, rice, pork, and avocado.

With over 150 types of fruit, Colombians know their juices and smoothies.

Colombian music and dance are expressions of the country’s diverse cultural heritage, blending Indigenous, African, and European influences. Cúmbia is perhaps the most iconic. Vallenato, originating from the Caribbean coast, tells stories of love, nature, and everyday life. Salsa, though not originally Colombian, is immensely popular, especially in Cali, known as the “Salsa Capital of the World.” Bambuco, another traditional style, showcases Andean influences with a more formal, waltz-like dance. Festivals like Barranquilla’s Carnival and the Vallenato Legend Festival celebrate these rich traditions.

Coffee, emeralds, a sombrero Vuetiao, handcrafted pottery and ceramics, artisanal rum, textiles and other local arts and crafts. Check out the stunning offerings from the Colombia Collective which does a wonderful job of supporting local communities.

Colombian literature is best known for its magical realism, epitomised by Nobel Laureate, Gabriel García Márquez.  Contemporary writers such as Laura Restrepo and Juan Gabriel Vásquez explore historical fiction and social issues. These works collectively portray Colombia’s diverse landscapes, cultures, and complex political history. Here are a few of our current favourites:

LUXURY HOLIDAYS & TOURS

An alluring adventure.

One of the most alluring destinations in Latin America, a holiday to Colombia is nothing short of an adventure. Discover sizzling modern cities, marvellous beaches, exotic wildlife and a rich cultural heritage.

You could find yourself strolling about the cobbled downtown of La Candelaria, taking in grand Spanish mansions and atmospheric old churches. You could admire the beautiful artistry on display in the Gold Museum, or observe the fading gentility of Mompox on the Magdelena River. Not forgetting the fairy tale port of Cartagena, built from the riches plundered by the Spanish and protected by seemingly impenetrable walls.

Venture further afield and you’ll uncover traditional Indian villages in the Sierra Nevada, jungle-cloaked beaches at Tayrona and monumental stone statues in the San Agustin Archaeological Park. Unmissable for coffee lovers is the Zona Cafetera, where you can stay in a working coffee farm and get a glimpse into the traditional Colombian way of life.

There are also astounding desert landscapes, Easter parades in Bogota, and carnivals in Barranquilla. Vivacious clubs, an unspoiled region of the Amazonian rainforest, and not one but two tantalising coastlines. Colombia is a country that immediately captures the attention. What’s more, Colombia is also centrally located between Ecuador, Venezuela, Brazil, and Peru. Whether you want to spend your days exploring, hiking, scuba diving or simply dozing in a hammock on a white-sanded beach, our experts will tailor your Colombian adventure to fit you perfectly.

We review the top 10 best luxury hotels in Colombia. Our list includes Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena, two Four Seasons hotels, Bogota and Casa Medina Bogota, plus Boutique Hotel Posada Las Trampas, Casa San Agustin, Grand Hyatt Bogota, JW Marriott Bogota, Las Islas, Tcherassi Hotel And Spa, The Orchids Hotel and W Bogota.

Colombia is situated on the northernmost tip of South America. The rainforest-covered country of Colombia boasts the Andes mountains, numerous coffee plantations, wonderful colonial architecture, and plenty of fabulous all-night salsa clubs.

Founded in 1533, Cartagena de Indias is the other unmissable city in Colombia and is now Colombia’s main travel destination. Its walls once served as the city’s defense, but now they harmonize with colonial balconies and republican structures reminiscent of its past splendors. In recognition of its vast cultural wealth and architecture, UNESCO declared Cartagena’s walled city and fortress a World Heritage Site in 1984.

Its booming capital, the high-altitude Bogotá, is a magnificent mix of a historic old town and new restaurants, boutique hotels, and craft breweries. Don’t miss Sundays in Bogota when its streets are closed to cars and overtaken by bicycles, Rollerbladers, and runners. It’s also when the Usaquen neighborhood has a weekly market.

We review the top 10 luxury hotels in Colombia, including Cartagena, Bogotá, and beyond.

Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena is one of the best luxury hotels in Colombia with 124 beautiful guestrooms.

Originally built as a convent in 1621, the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena is a legendary landmark in the heart of Cartagena’s walled city. Transformed into a luxury hotel in 1995, the Sofitel Santa Clara, unique in style, combines the allure of history with the art of French savoir-faire.

Mixing Colonial and Republican-style architecture with modern comfort, the hotel features gourmet cuisine, exceptional service, a world-class spa, meeting facilities, and state-of-the-art technology for events, conventions, and weddings.

After more than a decade in service, the hotel has been recognized as the “Best Hotel in Colombia” in Travel + Leisure’s Spanish edition. In 2009, the hotel was pleased to be included in Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious Gold List for the first time. It is also a proud member of Virtuoso’s exclusive travel network, which means you get free benefits here by booking your stay via our luxury travel concierge .

Guestrooms are distributed along a Colonial and Republican wing and overlook the Old Town, the Caribbean Sea, and the hotel’s poolside and interior courtyards. They are decorated in contemporary or authentic colonial style and feature the Sofitel MyBed concept for a calm and peaceful sleep guarantee.

In terms of dining, “El Claustro” (cloister) restaurant has a brasserie atmosphere and fare. Guests can enjoy delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner, either buffet style or à la carte. Another great option is “El Coro,” named after its convent’s choir, and offers an exclusive lounge bar offering signature cocktails, cigars, and live music from Thursday to Saturday.

Designed to transform body and soul, Sofitel Spa at the Sofitel Santa Clara is huge at 800 m² and offers fully equipped cabins and professionally trained staff. Select from an array of facials, deluxe treatments, rituals, or special packages all year round.

The landmark 1946 building of Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogota was designed by Colombian artist-architect Santiago Medina Mejia. The building has been declared a cultural monument, with its stoned columns, brick walls, beamed ceilings, and contemporary furnishings.

This hotel has some of the most quietly elegant rooms in the city, complete with beamed ceilings, hand-carved wooden furnishings, and fireplaces to cozy up to. This very small Four Seasons hotel has just 62 rooms.

The hotel houses a stylish Mediterranean bar & restaurant, with a greenhouse atrium perfect for languorous romantic evenings or a quick bite with a signature cocktail. The Spa is also excellent here and offers green coffee wraps, coconut scrubs, and other locally inspired spa treatments.

Of course, there is no Four Seasons rewards program, but if you are a regular guest of the Four Seasons or even want to try this iconic brand for the first time, you can take advantage of loyalty style benefits at Four Seasons hotels for no extra cost by booking your next stay via our luxury travel concierge .

Four Seasons Hotel Bogota is the newest Four Seasons in Bogota and provides a warm haven of customised service and sophisticated style for its guests.

Inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains, Rottet Studio has created a design aesthetic for Four Seasons Hotel Bogota, combining pattern, texture, color, and craftsmanship epitomized in the bright new lobby.

Four Seasons Hotel Bogota provides an oasis of quiet glamour with 64 rooms and suites, with custom-made beds framed by dark leather headboards and paneling and pale floors of locally sourced hardwood. Throughout the Hotel, nearly all materials are Colombian, with furnishings, finishes, and artwork all handcrafted by the country’s artisans and artists.

After beginning the day at Biblioteca restaurant, guests of Four Seasons need not go far to experience Bogota’s red hot culinary scene. Next door, Four Seasons offers Kūru, a fabulous new Japanese restaurant and bar opening for lunch midday and continuing into the night for cocktails, dinner, and late-night dining.

The Spa encompasses five luxurious treatment rooms, including an oversized couple’s suite and relaxation lounges, steam rooms, and a spa shop. The 24/7 Fitness Centre offers state-of-the-art cardio machines and weight training by Matrix to keep guests in shape. For those who prefer to get their exercise outdoors, the Front Desk team can also connect guests with bike rentals to partake in the ciclovía in this cyclist-friendly green city.

If you are looking for the best beach boutique hotel in Colombia, Las Islas has to be the one to choose. If you are in any doubt about how lovely this teeny resort is, just click through to the website and take a look at the waterways, beaches, and thatched huts. I can’t think of a more idyllic setting.

Las Islas offers the white sand beaches and turquoise waters of Colombia’s Isla Barú. Located just 45 minutes from Cartagena, Hotel Las Islas is a sophisticated, environmentally conscious retreat with luxurious accommodations and exceptional amenities.

Settle into your immaculately appointed bungalow, with its views of the sea or of the neighboring Parque Nacional Natural Corales del Rosario y de San Bernardo.

Enjoy their restaurants and bars for locally sourced, expertly prepared cuisine. Relax by the freshwater pool, take in the solarium views, or explore one of the many activities available at the hotel. This is an extraordinary place!

Casa San Agustin is a little boutique hotel in lively Cartagena. This romantic hotel offers charming and authentic rooms with large picture windows and super balconies that both enjoy plenty of natural light and breezes.

This elegant boutique hotel is comprised of just 31 rooms set within the Walled City of Cartagena. These rooms are spread across three exquisitely restored, whitewashed 17th-century colonial-era homes with thoughtful details that evoke the Spanish stronghold. Some of the rooms even have private plunge pools, and these are the ones to pick.

Accommodations are stylish, blending the hotel’s colonial past and contemporary Colombian energy. The acclaimed Alma Restaurant offers traditional Colombian flavors, presented with global refinement in an atmospheric indoor-outdoor setting.

Hotel Casa San Agustín is a member of Leading Hotels of the World and has earned numerous awards since opening in 2013, including TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards 2013 to 2017 and Andrew Harper’s Grand Awards 2015.

The charming boutique hotel Posada Las Trampas is set in a magnificent colonial-style building that was built in 1780; it has been cleverly renovated and re-opened in 2010 and is now a wonderful choice for your next trip to Colombia.

The hotel is located in the beautiful heritage town of Honda, Tolima, within 2 miles of Plaza Municipal de Mercado, Catedral de Nuestra Senora del Rosario, and Navarro Bridge. The hotel has been beautifully designed, and there are stunning corridors and lobbies and a spectacular outdoor pool.

This hotel is very much boutique with just 14 exquisite and individually decorated rooms that are full of character; all feature free Wi-Fi and room service. There’s a restaurant on-site, too, as well as a spa and business services.

Relax here in the sunshine on a lounger, take a swim, and then grab a cocktail from the bar. The rooftop terrace is the other place you will want to hang out, and it offers some excellent views!

W Bogota adds a vibrant vibe to Colombia’s always-bustling capital. Choose from 168 guestrooms with LCD smart HDTVs, rainforest showers, and other sharp features. Enjoy access to the W brand’s modern gym concept and Away Spa, both are retreats for detoxing and refueling.

Market Kitchen restaurant features a farm-to-table menu of world-class dishes accompanied by local fruits and vegetables, open 24/7. Delectable cocktails and live DJ sets keep the party going into the wee hours at the W Lounge.

JW Marriott Bogota has a prime location in the heart of the financial and entertainment districts, close to major corporate offices, the finest restaurants, bars of Zona G and Zona T and top area attractions, including Santo Tomas University, Avenida Chile Shopping Mall and National Theater Calle 71. The neighborhood is excellent, with lots of restaurants within easy walking distance.

This is a nice-looking hotel, very stylish with a boutique feel, and uses natural feeling decor with dark woods and leather in the decor. Many consider it one of the best Marriott hotels in the world. The hotel is just 6 miles away from El Dorado International Airport Bogota.

Rooms and suites feature soundproof windows and 300-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets for maximum comfort, a full desk, chaise, and ottoman. There is a separate bath and shower, with marble and hardwood decor, safe, fluffy robes, and slippers.

All the staff speak English, which is handy, and you can pamper yourself at the full-service spa, exercise at the 24-hour fitness center, and take a rejuvenating swim in the indoor lap pool. When hunger strikes, you won’t be at a loss for great options with four fabulous restaurants, including one where you can sit outside by their water feature.

Grand Hyatt Bogotá is 10 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from the historic center and 2 minutes from the American Embassy. While this is an excellent hotel, its location is nowhere near as good as the JW outlined above.

Enjoy the best views of the city, accompanied by the mountains of the Andes. View more than 55,000 historical pieces in the nearby Gold Museum, climb to the top of Monserrate hill or admire the art in the different museums that the city offers, and return to relax and revitalize your body in Zaitania Spa. Finish your day with an unparalleled dinner at one of two restaurants, Ushin and Capitalino, or have a drink at Ilustre Bar with signature cocktails.

Designed with bold and vibrant features, the hotel has 372 beautifully decorated guestrooms, including 50 suites, that invite guests to wake up in open, airy rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lush inner atrium garden multicolored lights of the metropolis, or the cloud-topped majesty of the Andes Mountains. Additionally, suites and club room guests have exclusive access to the Grand Club Lounge, which provides an elegantly designed space with personal concierge services and culinary highlights throughout the day.

A sense of glamour and grandeur greets you at The Orchids Hotel in Bogotá, a magnificent neo-classical Republican-style house, carefully restored and maintained to create this beautiful boutique hotel, one of the best in Colombia.

The 8 guest suites are adorned with a decadent and classical style that perfectly complements the building. Fine gourmet cuisine, created by chef Harry Sasson, is served in various dining locations; there’s even an art gallery! The hotel is located in the heart of Bogotá’s historic district, La Candelaria; you are just a short distance from the city’s main sites, including the Cathedral, the Gold Museum, the Palacio de Nariño, and the Cerro de Monserrate cable car.

ASSUNTA CRISTOFARO

Private travel designer, “the best of our way in this life is to know, to feel, to smell, to taste, to appreciate and to enjoy all the landscapes that god created for us that is why before you die you must travel as much as you can each year so that you carry a beautiful memory in your mind and heart, which will never age and endure for all eternity.”.

I was born in southern Italy, I am a professional accountant and I’ve held several important positions in private companies and the Italian government. From a very young age I loved to travel around the world, to know different cultures and places. In the travels I learned several languages like English, French and Spanish. I admired many beautiful landscapes, however when I met Colombia I fell in love with its exotic beauty, its immense rivers, the seas with its crystal clear waters, its green nature, great variety flora and fauna, different cultures, exquisite culinary, its people that is to admire ‘Friendly, cordial, helpful”. That is why I made the decision to be in Colombia since 2014 with my husband who is Colombian and my companion of adventures, who has been my tour guide in this beautiful country: COLOMBIA!

ANDRES FELIPE AGUILERA

Initially I started traveling for sports, but now I travel frequently for fun, and because it’s something I’m passionate about. I love learning about new cultures and places to visit within each country, including my own. I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel all over Colombia, each place I visit teaches me something new, and the experiences are so incredible that not even the best camera can capture them.

She has worked in tourism for more than 15 years, an industry that she loves that has given her the opportunity to explore new places and taught her to have an even bigger perspective of the world. She returned to Colombia with good expectations for her beloved country and to take advantage of the new wave of tourism. She hopes she can contribute through her work showing the wonders of this Magical Country. In her spare time she likes traveling, dancing and cooking.

She visited monuments, museums, parks and galleries, and immersed herself in a new language and culture. After 10 years in the US, she decided to return to Colombia to be closer to her family in Cali.

She is currently studying to be a Tour Guide, and loves exploring Colombia and all of its beauty. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, cooking, hiking and taking pictures. Her great aspiration is to show nationals and foreigners the beautiful city of Cali, the Department of Cauca Valley, the country, and the friendliness of her people. So when you come to Cali, let Claudia be your tour guide!

+ For me, Colombia is magical for its unique landscape, its biodiversity, and the warmness of its people.

LUIS DARÍO GONZÁLEZ

Managing director, “beyond the vision of the beholder and the reach of the mind, a new journey begins…”.

Colombian by birth. I spent 23 years of my life in Europe and mainly in Italy where I studied Economy of the Tourism Markets and Systems, specializing in sustainable tourism and territorial promotion focusing on the role of tourism as an economic development factor and in image positioning a countries that are in process of getting out of difficult times, like Colombia. After having worked for more than ten years for hotels, travel agencies and wholesale operators, I decided to return to my origins, to inform myself and to visit Colombia throughout its territory to discover the classic routes and the most unexplored and authentic corners of the country. In 2012 I founded Magical Colombia, a local operator with Colombian soul and an international level organization with the sole purpose to offer excellent services. Now that I live again in Colombia, I dedicate myself to this work with extreme passion and discipline, venturing day after day on the infinite faces and shades of this magic land.

“traveling is the way in which the soul and spirit are enriched.”.

I’m Andrea Heshusius. Since I was 7 years old, I started traveling around the world with my family. I was born in Colombia, I lived in Holland and in Spain. Traveling is one of my passions. I studied drama and I’m also an art historian. Lover of culture, art history and good gastronomy. After living 20 years in Europe. I returned to the country where I was born. Along with a backpack I traveled through this beautiful country that has many beautiful things to show, know and try. My passion for this country and its culture makes me an excellent hostess and I want to make your time in Colombia to be the best time of your life.

“for me traveling means learning a new way of seeing the facts of the world, reflecting on one’s own opinions (and perhaps changing them) through experiences far from the routine that, when we return home, we discover that everything is the same and also different. helping people realize the dream of a trip is like helping them discover something more about themselves.”.

I have worked with trips to Africa for almost twenty years offering tailor-made safaris and luxurious experiences in uncontaminated nature. My university career in Anthropology also has to do with Africa, especially with tourism in Namibia. Then, almost at the some time, my son and Latin America came into my life. This is how my expectations and interests have changed, I was curious about colors, people and new flavors. With Colombia it was love at first sight!

Luxury Travel to the Colombian Amazon

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

It covers around one third of the entire country, but the Colombian Amazon is one of its best kept secrets. Sitting on the border with Brazil and Peru, this is an area relatively untouched by tourism that promises a unique and wonderfully off-the-grid experience.

The Amazonas region, named after the Amazon River which drains the department, is a huge area inaccessible by road. The gateway to the rainforest is the town of Leticia, reached by a two-hour flight from Bogota. The mighty Amazon snakes its way throuh dense, green jungle which teems with life. Deer and puma stalk through the forest, sloths and monkeys climb from tree to tree, and hundreds of species of birds rise up through the canopy and flit through the skies.

One of the best ways to explore this area is by navigating the vast network of waterways, home to pink dolphins and dotted with Victoria Regia water lilies, the largest in the world. You can also hike through the rainforest, getting up close to endemic plants and the smaller creatures that inhabit this region.

The Colombian Amazon is also culturally incredibly rich with many ancient traditions maintained by the indiginous communities that call this pristine environment home.

There are two seasons in the Colombian Amazon. The dry season runs from July to December and the wet season from January to June. The wet season generally sees fewer animals as they retreat to the drier forest but you can kayak through the flooded forest. November to February is a good time to visit when there is a bit of a bridge between the two seasons.

  • Hop on a boat and explore the network of waterways
  • Trek through the rainforest, keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife and endemic plant species
  • Close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the rainforest from the quiet solitude of your lodge

The Best Resorts to Book in Colombia

Experience barefoot luxury and Caribbean views at this mangrove-nestled resort

Caribbean islands fringed with pearl-white beaches, sleepy colonial towns with Spaghetti Western bell towers, condor-patrolled Andean valleys and ruined pre-Colombian cities. The landscapes alone will have you falling for Colombia . And that’s before you get the colorful carnivals, the scent of tropical flowers and the nocturnal beat of salsa spilling into the streets. Where to relax when your senses need a reboot? We know the best resorts in Colombia – bookable on Culture Trip.

Keen to visit Colombia but not sure where to stay or what to do? Consider joining Culture Trip’s specially curated eight-day Colombian Andes adventure or our epic eight-day Colombian Caribbean trip – both led by our local insider.

Tamacá Beach Resort Hotel

Outdoor courtyard with a small, decorative pool and tile stepping stones, at Hotel Tamacá Beach Resort, Colombia.

We’ll be frank: there are more beautiful hotels than Tamacá, with its old-fashioned concrete-block design and its rooms sporting functional wood veneer. But sometimes what you need is an undemanding, non-extortionate base. There are also prettier towns than Santa Marta, the town it’s in. But you’re here for the wildly romantic beauty all around: golden beaches, the Sierra Nevada mountain range, rising from the coast to icy peaks, and indigenous villages lost in rainforested valleys. It’s all doable on day trips.

Hotel Estelar Playa Manzanillo

Outdoor pool with sun-lounging facilities and lush palm trees at Hotel Estelar Playa Manzanillo, Colombia.

Cartagena, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is one of South America’s more enchanting colonial cities: set behind cannon-encrusted walls, it is cut by cobbled streets of ochre and lemon Spanish mansions, with spicy smells wafting from seafood restaurants and vibrant with bars and salsa clubs. This old-fashioned all-inclusive (with family-size pools and balcony rooms squeezed into concrete annexes) sits on a broad sandy beach a 20-minute shuttle ride away from the city, just close enough for you to dip from day to nightlife, with disco naps in between.

Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena

The stylish El Coro Lounge Bar at Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena.

Hotel Conrad Cartagena,

Resort, Chain Hotel

The spacious and contemporary lounge/lobby at Conrad Resort Cartagena.

You couldn’t accuse the Conrad of hemming you in on holiday – not given those awesome expanses of turquoise Caribbean Sea. Check out the vast complex of swimming pools for all ages. Wander the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus golf course. And rest awhile in your cavernous balconied room, enjoying its meditative contemporary white palette, lent splashes of color by locally sourced art. The only downside? The secluded beach is tennis-court tiny. That and the fact that Cartagena – the jewel in colonial Colombia’s crown – is a half-hour drive away.

Hotel Las Islas

Spacious room with four poster bed and private balcony at Hotel Las Islas, Colombia.

On a beach edged by wild forest an hour from Cartagena, this jungle hotel lays on Robinson-Crusoe-barefoot luxury. Rope-floored, palm-thatched cabins have mosquito-netted four posters and Caribbean-view balconies. Some are conjoined – ideal for families. Cartagena is an easy day trip away, and you’re never lost for things to do, from glass-bottom sea kayaking and snorkeling over the coral to heli-trips to ruined pre-Colombian cities in the mountains.

Irotama Resort

Outdoor pool with sun-lounging facilities at Irotama Resort, Colombia.

Towering over a Caribbean beach just south of Santa Marta town, this big resort is a favorite among Colombian partygoers and families. It has a pool, tennis courts and a golf driving range; what it won’t deliver is quiet intimacy – even in the garden bungalows. The rooms to book are the balcony suites on the upper floors of the main building – for their sweeping, sunset-over-the-ocean views. Best of all are the Sierra Nevada mountains a half-hour drive away, fringed with the gorgeous, empty beaches of Tayrona National Park.

Hotel Punta Faro

Hotel Punta Faro

The small-scale Punta Faro is for young families after a gentle beach, sunset cocktails and a rest. The setting is a white-sand-fringed coral island lapped by turquoise Caribbean shallows, in the heart of the Islas del Rosario National Marine Park. Activities are limited (kayaks cost extra), while Cartagena is too far away for a day trip. But the sea is calm, and the palm-thatch bungalows with chunky beds and balcony hammocks will have you curled up with a book. The junior suites are best, with ocean views and coral-reef snorkeling right off the shore.

Blue Apple Beach House

The glass-fronted Manzana cabaña with an outdoor plunge pool at Blue Apple Beach House in Bolívar.

DJs and live salsa. A handful of chic-shack thatched bungalows with outdoor bathrooms and plunge pools. A young hipster crowd on holiday from Bogotá or Barranquilla. The Blue Apple is the Colombian Caribbean, Ibiza-style, which means it’s not a place you’d come to rest, soothed to sleep by cicada song and waves. But it’s great for a long weekend dance party, with snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking between drinks.

Hotel El Amargal Reserva Natural

Two surfboards on an outdoor deck, looking out to the ocean waves at Hotel El Amargal Reserva Natural, Colombia.

It’s not all about the Caribbean. Colombia straddles two oceans. El Amargal belongs to the wilder, wetter Pacific – squeezed between forests of waterfalls and rocky shoreline broken by long, broad coves. It’s fabulous for wildlife: hummingbirds and eagles in the rainforests, manta rays and whales plying the ocean. The wilderness is spectacular, the accommodation jungle-camp simple: open-sided huts with marine breezes for air-con, bare wooden floors and foamy mattresses. Remember, you’re here for creatures rather than creature comforts.

Eco Hotel Tierra de Agua

Outdoor decking with two jacuzzi tubs, surrounded by lush palm trees at Ecohotel Tierra de Agua, Colombia.

Whitewater rafting, waterfall hikes, hang-gliding, fly fishing – the village of Cocorná, in the Andean foothills east of Medellín, is an under-the-radar light-adventure destination. Tierra de Agua’s open-sided bamboo bungalows cascade down a hillside of re-planted tropical forest, and you’re here for gentle immersion in nature. Sounds of cicadas and flowing water lull you to sleep. You wake to breakfasts of tropical fruit and spend days hiking, swimming in the clear-water river or dozing in the hammam and the spring-water hot tubs.

Aité Eco Hotel Resort

Exterior of Aité Eco Hotel Resort, against a backdrop of forests and mountains.

Aité means barefoot, under-thatch relaxation on one of the least-spoilt stretches of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Accommodation is simple: fresh, whitewash-and-tile bungalows, with hammock-slung balconies, brightly colored floral cushions and views of the sands shaded with coconut palms. Toucans flit in the trees, turtles clamber over the beaches and – making your visit truly special – nearby are the wild forests of Tayrona National Park, as well as the flamingo-filled wetlands of Los Flamencos wildlife sanctuary.

22 Most Luxurious Restaurants in Colombia

entrance of Santa Clara restaurant in Monserrate Bogotá

Updated on 04/19/2024

Dear reader, I would also like to recommend our Colombia travel guide , which provides a perfect overview of the tourist attractions in Colombia. Enjoy reading it!

In recent years, Colombian cuisine has undergone a culinary revolution, where talented chefs and innovative restaurants have elevated traditional dishes to new heights. They offer a luxurious sensory experience, combining tradition, creativity, and the highest quality ingredients.

Do you want to live the experience? I will introduce you to the most luxurious restaurants in the main cities of Colombia.

A brief overview of Colombian gastronomy

Colombian cuisine is an interesting blend of indigenous, Spanish, Arab, and African influences. From the mountains to the coasts, it is distinguished by its abundance of fresh ingredients, aromatic herbs, and spices, creating a fascinating palette of typical dishes. Among them, highlights include ajiaco, bandeja paisa, empanadas, etc.

And of course, in Colombia, you can find not only native food but also a varied offering of foreign and fusion cuisines, such as Mexican, Asian, Italian, French, Arab, and Greek cuisine.

So, Colombian cuisine often evolves to take typical dishes to the highest level or fuses with other cuisines to create sophisticated gastronomic experiences that surprise you with every bite.

The most luxurious restaurants in Colombia

First, I want to clarify what we mean by luxurious restaurants. We are talking about restaurants that blend modernity and sophistication in their facilities with haute cuisine.

And what is haute cuisine? It refers to the style and preparation of dishes using elevated and avant-garde cooking techniques, such as the use of liquid nitrogen, spherification, trickery techniques, and foams, along with the highest quality ingredients. Additionally, it pays great attention to the aesthetics of the plate, essentially conceiving a work of art.

By having these two elements, it is common to receive prestigious recognitions such as Michelin stars that highlight the quality and culinary merit of a restaurant or chef. In fact, some of the chefs I will mention have 1 of the 3 stars awarded by the French Michelin Guide.

In summary, haute cuisine is not just eating; it is a sensory experience. Therefore, considering the above, I present to you the most luxurious restaurants in Colombia.

Luxurious Restaurants in Bogotá

Criterión is a restaurant created in 2004 by the famous Colombian chef Jorge Rausch and his brother Mark Raush. In this place, you will find haute cuisine signature dishes, typical Colombian dishes, and recipes inspired by European gastronomy. At Criterión, you can order à la carte or try an innovative tasting menu. Among its dishes are ajiaco empanadas, Colombian buñuelo with tuna tartare, braised lamb neck, bouef bourguignon, milk and honey dessert, among others.

Chef Jorge Rauch owns other restaurants in Colombia, such as La Apuesta, Local, and Giratorio Octavo.

Recommendations When Dining in Colombian Luxurious Restaurants

Keep these tips in mind to avoid setbacks and have a perfect gastronomic experience.

  • Book in advance: Luxurious restaurants often have high demand, so make your reservation to ensure you have a spot.
  • Research the menu in advance: Before going, check the online menu to get an idea of the available options.
  • Know the tipping protocol: In some places, the service is already included, typically around 10% of the total bill, while in others, an additional tip is expected. It is generally considered “rude” not to leave a tip.
  • Ask about wine pairings: Consult the sommelier for recommendations on wine pairings with your food, especially if you’re trying a tasting menu.
  • Be patient: High-end or signature dishes often have a somewhat longer wait time than common dishes. Therefore, inquire about the timing and practice patience.
  • Inform the waiter of any allergies or dietary preferences: If you have food allergies or dietary preferences, communicate this when making the reservation or inform the waiter upon arrival.
  • Remember that portions may be smaller: In many cases, the main complaint about luxury restaurants is that the portion sizes are small. However, these restaurants sell culinary experiences beyond just filling you up. Try various dishes from the menu or opt for the tasting menu.

13 Important Tips For First-Timers Visiting Colombia

  • Eat at the hotel for cleanliness and safety.
  • Bring enough cash for daily activities, especially in remote areas.
  • Learn basic Spanish to navigate the country and communicate effectively.

Visiting Colombia for the first time can be exciting, but just like any destination worldwide, there are some tips one needs to know before visiting. Language, weather, money, and transportation can be quite confusing, especially in Colombia. Still, with these tips, one will be able to avoid a lot of difficult situations in the country. It doesn't matter if you're here for ten days or three; Colombia is a gorgeous country with endless things to experience. Whether it's someone's first time or they need a refresher, you can't go wrong with following these essential tips for traveling to beautiful Colombia!

UPDATE: 2023/11/25 16:36 EST BY NOAH STAATS

There Are More Things To Know When Visiting Colombia

This article has been refreshed with new information regarding a trip to beautiful Colombia, as well as expanded talking points for previous suggestions. Remember to stay out of bad neighborhoods at night, bring enough cash for day trips, learn some Spanish, and have plenty of fun!

Eat At The Hotel If You're Worried About Cleanliness

For those coming to Colombia and nervous about food and water cleanliness, it's always a safe bet to eat with your hotel or resort and get water via gift shops inside them. Although most places in bigger Colombian cities are clean and safe, some smaller villages do not abide by strict health and sanitation regulations when preparing or serving food and drinks. To steer clear of food-borne illness, make sure and book restaurants with good reviews and clean kitchens/dining rooms.

  • It's generally better to eat at the hotel if you're staying somewhere off the beaten path.

Tayrona National Park is a fun day trip idea for visitors to Colombia.

Make Sure And Keep Some Cash Ready

One thing many visitors to Colombia forget is to bring enough cash for daily activities. Because debit and credit cards are often not accepted or take a large conversion fee, getting cash from the bank or at your hotel may be the better option. Of course, in bigger cities, there will be more accessibility and availability to ATMs and stores taking credit cards, but in remote towns and villages: bring cash.

That said, keep all cash somewhere safe and hard to get to. Pickpocketing is prevalent here, as well as violent assault in poorer areas.

  • Because of steep ATM and credit card fees, it's best to bring enough money for everyday food, attractions, and transportation when visiting Colombia.

Learn Some Spanish Words

Colombia is a place where the majority of the population speaks only Spanish. In a place like Bogotá - the capital city , most people only speak Spanish, which means it can be difficult to get around if one only knows English. While one does not necessarily need to know how to speak the language, some basic words will go a long way and help one better get around the country.

  • Learning basic Spanish will go a long way when coming to Colombia.

Taxis Are Cheap, But Buses Are Cheaper And Safer

Buses are Colombia's main means of transportation, and they are incredibly cheap and safe. Taxis, on the other hand, are also cheap, but a few inconveniences come with them. First, they can be unsafe, as fake taxi drivers can rob passengers. Apps such as Uber and Easy Taxi are illegal in the country, but they are still in operation and are the safest ways to get taxis.

  • Taking the bus is often cheaper and safer than taxis while in Colombia.

Avoid Lonely Areas, Especially At Night

Just like many other amazing destinations worldwide, Colombia experiences increased crime, which is why one must exercise extreme caution when visiting. A good rule is avoiding lonely areas, especially at night. For the first trip, travelers can stick to the popular tourist destinations around the country, which are usually more crowded, to avoid being an easy target.

  • Tourists to Colombia are not recommended to venture out into lonely/quiet areas at night.

Avoid Unnecessary Display Of Wealth

Showing unnecessary displays of wealth, especially in a country like Colombia, may be dangerous. The country's economy is bad, which has made many people living there desperate. It is advisable to avoid putting on too many accessories or carrying large amounts of money around to avoid drawing too much attention to oneself.

  • Wearing fancy clothes, jewelry, or other accessories in Colombia can get you into trouble at night or in certain areas.

Prepare An Itinerary To Follow Before Visiting

Colombia is very big and endowed with plenty of natural and man-made attractions, which means there are plenty of things to see and do here. Without a proper itinerary of what to do in the country, one can find it difficult to get the most out of their visit. During the planning process, make a list of things to do in the country and follow that itinerary when in the country. There will be more to do, but it is better to have a plan rather than randomly deciding what to do.

  • Planning before you come here can help ease frustration due to Colombia's vast offerings.

The Weather Can Be Unpredictable, So Come Prepared

Colombia experiences two major seasons, which are rainy and dry. But the weather is not usually not dependent on the time of the year but on elevation. The weather can easily change from sunny to rainy in some parts of the country with higher elevations, like Bogotá. The temperature is also known to sometimes rise from as low as 4 degrees Celsius to 19 degrees Celsius on some days. Some parts of the country, such as Cartagena and Santa Marta, experience lots of sunshine all year round. This means at any time of the year; one can experience all four seasons in Colombia. With such diverse and unpredictable weather, one has to come prepared to face any type of weather in this country.

  • The weather is unpredictable in Colombia, with wild changes in temperature being common.

Never Talk About Drugs, Especially Cocaine

One important thing to always avoid doing in Colombia is talking about drugs. Drug production and trafficking continue to increase in this country, and drug is always accompanied by crime. This makes it not just a national issue but a global issue for which Colombia plays a major role as it is one of the major producers of cocaine in the world. In 2021, the production of coca leaves which is the main ingredient for cocaine, increased drastically. To avoid getting into a difficult situation, pretend not to know anything about drugs in Colombia and instead focus on enjoying the amazing things the country has to offer.

  • Joking or discussing cocaine can and will get you in trouble with law enforcement in Colombia.

Haggle Before Buying Something

The asking price of a product in Colombia may not always be the actual price but just the seller trying to get more profit from tourists who may not know the price. To avoid getting ripped by sellers (who always know a gringo when they see one), employ the skill of bargaining when purchasing something. Buying something $5 less than the initial asking price is not uncommon.

  • It's worth it to try and bargain with vendors while shopping in Colombia.

Altitude Sickness Is Real In Colombia

In Colombia, like many parts of South America, high altitude is something that one often has to worry about as the country is filled with many mountains. Bogota, the country’s capital, rises to an elevation of 8,660 feet , making it one of the highest cities in the world. One important tip to help deal with altitude sickness in Colombia is to always stay hydrated when heading to places with high altitudes. Adventurers seeking to go rock climbing or visit higher places can also include other substances like vitamins and minerals to cushion the effects of the high altitudes. Alcohol, caffeine, and other dehydrating substances should also be avoided when heading to higher elevations.

  • Because of the possible 8,660 feet of elevation in Colombia, it's not uncommon for altitude sickness to ravage through groups vacationing to the country.

It’s Not Mandatory To Tip

In hotels, bars, restaurants, and other service centers around Colombia, tipping is not usually mandatory or expected, unlike in other countries. Nicer restaurants usually include a 10% service charge automatically on the bill. Of course, if the service was exceptional, it does not hurt to give the service person some extra change. Tipping taxi drivers is also not a thing as passengers are only required to pay the amount on the meter; still, the extra tip is always appreciated. In most cases, tips cost between 2,000 and 5,000 Columbian Pesos, equivalent to a dollar. That's like nothing to most tourists, but the locals in Colombia appreciate it so much.

  • Adding a tip (although appreciated) is not required in Colombia.

Be Careful On The Roads

The traffic in Colombia can be chaotic. Drivers here are usually impatient and aggressive and won’t stop for anybody. To avoid getting into a dangerous situation on the road, it is important to be careful on the roads. With dangerous roads and long traffic jams, it will be better to avoid driving in Colombia and just stick to using taxis and buses.

  • Driving can be difficult here, especially regarding other impatient and volatile drivers.

What I Learned Traveling With Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan

Four days in Colombia with the Sussexes granted me an up-close look at how they work—and who they do it all for

There isn’t really any way to properly prepare for a trip with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Over the last 10 years of my career, particularly the last five at Harper’s Bazaar , I’ve found myself in all sorts of high-pressure celebrity scenarios. Profiling Bad Bunny ? Yep. Covering Beyoncé’s top-secret concert in Dubai ? You got it. Interviewing Oscar winners like Penélope Cruz ? Check. Something I often tell myself once drafts are filed and stories go live is “Well, it can’t get much bigger than that”—but somehow, it still always does. Being on the ground with Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan in Colombia for their tour with the Archewell Foundation, however, was easily one of the most eye-opening moments of my career.

The trip felt especially kismet to me because my earliest introduction to Harper’s Bazaar was my mother’s cherished Princess Diana commemorative issue, which she kept displayed in our home. Now, decades later, I found myself charting through Colombia with Diana’s son and his wife. Watching the warmth and compassion with which they approached meeting hundreds of strangers, and then witnessing the way these IRL events were discussed online, made me understand the vertigo that comes with simply existing at Harry and Meghan’s level of fame. Those four days in Colombia weren’t about the pomp and circumstance of celebrity, however; for the Sussexes, everything they do and everywhere they go always circles back to their mission of “showing up and doing good.”

The Sussexes’ visit came courtesy of an official invitation from Vice President Francia Elena Márquez of Colombia, and followed two other trips they made this year, to Nigeria and Canada . Since Harry and Meghan stepped back from being senior working members of the British royal family in 2020 and launched the Archewell Foundation in 2021, they’ve been able to focus on the issues most important to them, from speaking out about mental health to helping orchestrate crucial funding toward COVID-19 vaccine research at the height of the pandemic. But at the crux of their advocacy work is the goal of building a better, safer digital world for the generations to come, inspired by their own experience with media mistreatment and digital misinformation.

There’s no doubt that challenging the dehumanizing effect of the internet is a lofty goal, especially when the youngest generation is a group that was essentially born with the digital space at their fingertips. But if witnessing the duke and duchess meeting with students, teachers, parents, and community leaders on the ground in Colombia showed me anything, it’s that a healthier future for our children—one with less bullying, less toxicity, and less encouragement to troll and react—is possible, simply because it’s what today’s children ultimately want for themselves.

In classrooms across Colombia, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan sat down and listened—and I mean really listened—to what Colombian youth had to say about their evolving relationships with social media and how it affects their daily lives. To me, the Sussexes soar when working with today’s youth—it’s an interaction that once again brings the late Princess Diana front of mind when looking back at her public interactions with youth and AIDS patients decades ago. M aybe becoming parents themselves has helped Harry and Meghan form a more organic connection with children and teens. Whatever it is, their ability to get young people to open up about their lives and goals is undeniable. Children were ecstatic to see the couple walking the hallways of their schools, and the Sussexes were quick to pause for each and every hug, hand hold, or selfie request.

the duke and duchess of sussex visit colombia day 1

The Sussexes’ tour of Colombia was also about shining a light on some of Latin America’s most overlooked communities. As someone who has covered the intersection of AfroLatinidad and culture since the very beginning of my career, at times it was overwhelming to witness the joy that radiated from local children and elders alike at being chosen to share a piece of their world with the duke and duchess. Even in 2024, the mainstream media’s portrayal of Colombians is inherently white (just look at the country’s biggest entertainment exports), but the country’s African and indigenous traditions are rooted in every aspect of its art, music, and literature. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t moved by witnessing communities come together to showcase a traditional drum circle , or by chatting with young local dancers in Cali ahead of their performance. Colombians—like so many Latin Americans—manage to find resilience by maintaining their joy, and it’s something we all could learn from.

Duchess Meghan even mentioned it herself during a panel conversation for the Afro-Descendant Women and Power: Voices of Equity Summit, which celebrated Afro-Colombian women and leaders. Describing this era of her life as her “chapter of joy,” she said, “The more you are able to look at your life and really, truly recognize and be able to be grateful for your life … you have to be grateful for all aspects of it. My intentionality is to enjoy this chapter and be able to love through every piece of this as best we can.”

the duke and duchess of sussex colombia visit day 4

I needed that positivity during my time covering the Sussexes, since any sort of association with the couple—even just being a pool reporter sharing basic details and facts about their day-to-day events—means opening yourself up to unwarranted critique from, well, the world. Within hours of the announcement I would be accompanying them on tour, I was called a grifter, a mouthpiece, and a calculated piece of their PR puzzle, among other things—and that was before I even sent out a single pool report. U.K. reporters specifically were baffled about my being there; I was described as having “no news background,” my entire career discredited because of what I can only assume is the fact that I’m not white and not British. There was no mention of my yearslong dedication to uplifting Latino art and culture. Because the Colombian tour was planned to the minute, with essentially zero drama for tabloids to pick up on and sensationalize, I was the next easiest target. It all felt eerily familiar.

meghan harry colombia trip

Let me be clear, though: I’m not trying to put forth a woe-is-me narrative or garner sympathy. It’s simply that the experience gave me a deeper appreciation for Archewell’s core mission of building a more fair and equitable digital world, one where we don’t thrive on punching someone’s self esteem to a pulp. I’m a 30-year-old woman who can recognize right from wrong and know when to log off for the sake of my mental health; our youth don’t all necessarily carry that same strength. It’s up to us—adults, leaders, and yes, even the Duke and Duchess of Sussex—to do our part in minimizing online hostility as much as we can.

If anything, what struck me most as a witness to the Sussexes’ operation was the intentionality they bring to the way they use their platform. Regardless of public opinion, the duke and duchess are committed to continuing acts of service. It’s not a requirement for them—after all, plenty of celebrities don’t see service as part of their role; instead, it’s a calling. That acute attention to detail—in the way they marshal their fame, the way they move about the world, and the way they choose whom to collaborate with—is what will help them make the most impact in the future.
