Thirty years.

We’ve been hosting riders on Mt St Helens for 30 years!

First-timers and old pros,  it’s time to get ready to ride!  The Longview Rotary Club once again presents Tour de Blast, a bicycle ride into the heart of the Mount St. Helens blast zone! The Spirit Lake Memorial Highway winds its way up the Toutle Valley into the Mount St. Helens blast zone to the Johnston Ridge Viewpoint. Most of the course is on recently resurfaced highway with wide shoulders and excellent visibility. Fully supported ride with staffed rest areas (food and drink), bike repair, sag wagons and on-course motorcycle aid if things just don’t work out (flats, tired, sasquatch sighting…).

Tour de Blast Resumes for 29th Year Saturday as Bicyclists Again Climb Toward Mount St. Helens

Tour de Blast participants pedal up the Hoffstadt Creek bridge in June 2018. After a year off due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tour de Blast returns Saturday.

By Hayley Day

The Daily News

TOUTLE — Each summer from 1994 to 2008, Marvin Cooper pedaled up thousands of feet in elevation through the Mount St. Helens blast zone.

For 14 years, the Kelso resident was a regular in the Tour de Blast ride, where cyclists climb up to 8,800 feet of elevation and 82 miles roundtrip from Toutle Lake High School to the region where the mountain blew in 1980.

For his May 4 birthday, his wife Genece commissioned a quilt combining each Tour de Blast T-shirt he received during registration.

But about a month before the gift was delivered, Marvin Cooper died of cancer, said his wife.

“I’m sure he can see it from up where he’s at,” she said.

Tour de Blast returns Saturday after a virtual event last year. The event will include COVID-19 protocols, and fewer, but dedicated, riders.

COVID Protocols

About 330 riders registered for 2021’s event — nearly half as many as the maximum number of riders the event has seen.

COVID-19 protocols, outlined in the event’s four permits, mandate changes.

Riders will grab pasta to-go instead of eating at Toutle High School. Riders will not be permitted to shower at the high school like in the past. Masks and social distancing will be maintained at rest stops.

Last year’s event drew about 58 riders who tracked their mileage and elevation gain on a website for a month. That means there was less money for Rotary donations.

The event’s expenses are deducted from the registration revenue and the rest funds scholarships, literacy programs or other local organizations like Community House on Broadway, said organizer John Bard.

Bard has climbed up 5,200 feet of elevation to the ride’s Elk Rock viewpoint once and the final destination of Johnston Ridge twice.

That was before he was the lead organizer for the Longview Rotary’s 29-year event. He has been in command for nearly a third of the ride’s history.

“I’m a very busy person the day of the ride,” he said.

The ride has three levels, ranging from 39-mile to 82-mile round-trip treks. Even the beginning level boasts 2,700 feet of elevation gain and is referred to as a “fun ride” on the event’s website.

“You do train a little before you do it,” Bard said.

Rider safety was a top concern when switching to a virtual event in 2020, he said, but the return to the “unique ride that goes into a volcanic national monument” is a welcomed return.

“There was no hesitation to cancel the event last year but it’s really nice to have it again this year,” he said.

Tour de Blast

June 17, 2023.

I had been looking forward to riding Tour de Blast, which goes from Toutle to Johnson Ridge Observatory near Mount St. Helen. A month before the ride, however, we got a notice that storm run-off took out the road leading up to the view point. The ride was still happening, but shorter than it usually was.

I drove to Toutle the night before the ride where I camped at the school along with around 50 other riders.

It rained over night, but was supposed to be dry the next day. The weather app lied! I woke up and it was not looking very promising.

The ride to the first rest stop was chilly and I was glad I had brought two jackets (one a rain jacket). I stopped and took a few photos on the way.

tour de blast 2023

After grabbing a garlic fried potato and devouring it, I decided to head back to Toutle. It rained the entire ride back and I got thoroughly soaked! I was so glad I had a change of dry clothes, though dirty, to change into when I got back.

When I got home, my bike, rain jacket and panniers were covered in gray ash that was in the rain…a sure sign of where I had ridden! After all these years, the ash from Mount St. Helen’s eruption still makes it’s presence known.

The Pangolin Posse in the World

The Pangolin Posse in the World

To raise awareness for trans youth services and raise money for the trevor project, tour (was) de blast.

This year we decided to do “Tour de Blast”, the annual ride to see Mt. St. Helens. It’s put on by the Longview Rotary and they do a great job supporting this ride. Unfortunately it was only to Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center this year but it was a rare visit, as most people don’t stop there, continuing on to Johnston Ridge.

tour de blast 2023

Here’s the usual comparison to the Tourmalet day we will have in July. Not as high, but longer. The ride is much longer and continues “off the profile” here.

tour de blast 2023

Serene, my niece, came along with us and she was a trooper. She hadn’t ridden a whole lot before that and a 10 miler was giving her hand numbness, but she bravely went along. It was a press but she made it to Hoffstadt Creek at 1500′ and 39 miles. She came back down the road in the rain but she was still smiling at the bottom. Chapeau!

tour de blast 2023

There were a lot of signs of history along the way. Abandoned Shell stations, Trucks with trees and chain saw carvings.

tour de blast 2023

Then I saw this guy, and I thought “Cryptids unite!” I had to get a picture with this awesome fellow. He was cheerfully greeting cyclists as they passed. A lot of people think the “flyover” towns along the STP are full of hateful bigots, but it’s not the whole story.

This guy’s name is Cary, and he was friendly and happened to be from the town I went to high school, Cathlamet. He loves and cares for the elk herd by his camp, carves silly things and frankly didn’t need the mask to be squatchy.

Hoffstadt Creek Bridge

tour de blast 2023

Everything about this stop was amazing. The bridge was amazing, the food was amazing…they had baked potatoes and hot coffee. The people were amazing.

tour de blast 2023

Notice the tiny specks of riders. This is where the road really turned up, and the weather turnt up! It got sunny!

One mile, you have the mist and mystery of being in clouds.

tour de blast 2023

The next mile, you have glorious sun and the clouds are but dressing.

tour de blast 2023

There were some great rock formations. Not sure if this was “Elk Rock” on the left, but it was pretty and loved the juxtoposition of the liner cement. The blobs below were also fun.

tour de blast 2023

Speaking of Elk Rock, they not only had hot dogs…appropriate really, but also more garlic potatoes, bacon, egg rolls and HALIBUT. In true SW Washington fashion, they had halibut. These people were super nice and gave me a warm dog right off the grill.

tour de blast 2023

My photo mojo was off that day and the pics do not do it justice, but the valley was spectacular.

tour de blast 2023

I planted a sticker by the Coldwater Visitor Center but a respectful distance from park property. Road signs are fair game.

tour de blast 2023

This is Coldwater Lake, formed when the mudflow from the eruption dammed Coldwater Creek. The sediment delta is covered in green above the lake and beyond you can see the still exposed flow that came from the mountain.

tour de blast 2023

The peaks behind the creek, one of which is “Minnie Peak”, like my sister’s name.

tour de blast 2023

On the way back I planted another sticker at the Forest Learning Center. If you can learn about the forest, you can learn about kids needing help.

tour de blast 2023

“Riverdale Raceway”, the motocross track on the way up, was full of racers getting air. All in all a great ride and I hope to ride to the crater next time!

Music and concerts, music and concerts | concert review: alice cooper and rob zombie make shock rock a blast at xcel energy center, cooper has influenced countless musicians who’ve followed him, including zombie himself.

Alice Cooper is shown wearing a top hat, long jacket and black leather pants on stage at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center with his band

From the early days of the Alice Cooper band to his solo career that began in 1975, the man born Vincent Furnier has enjoyed his position as one of the most-loved musicians in the business, thanks to his hard-driving songs, spirited live performances and comically ghoulish persona that earned him the title of the Godfather of Shock Rock.

Cooper has influenced countless musicians who’ve followed him, including Zombie himself, who inducted the Alice Cooper band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

Now 76, Cooper has said he’s six years younger than Mick Jagger and that whenever the Rolling Stones frontman retires, Cooper figures he’s got six more years left in him: “I will not let him beat me when it comes to longevity.”

Sunday night, Cooper felt as ageless as ever, from his barking voice to multiple costume changes. He has continued to record new music, including his most recent four albums which he worked on with Bob Ezrin, the mega-producer behind Cooper’s biggest records from the ’70s.

Not that Cooper played any of the new stuff, though. In his tightly paced hour-long set, he focused on his early hitmaking days (“No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “Elected,” “I’m Eighteen”) and his successful second act during the hair metal era (“Poison,” “Hey Stoopid,” “Lock Me Up”).

Of course, he also found time for his famed theatrics. Cinematic serial killer Jason Voorhees showed up on stage during “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask),” a giant monster joined him for “Feed My Frankenstein” as did a whip-cracking demon in a bikini during “Go to Hell.” Cooper’s most famous bit took place during “Ballad of Dwight Fry,” which opened with him wearing a straitjacket and wrapped with his head on a guillotine.

The crowd ate it all up and showered love on his terrific band, which includes three guitarists. Fan favorite Nita Strauss even got her own solo.

Zombie, 59, first found fame in the ’90s as the leader of the metal band White Zombie. After a pair of hit major label albums, the band split and Zombie went on to pursue a solo career. He’s also become an accomplished director of horror films inspired by the likes of “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” “The Shining” and “A Clockwork Orange.”

As such, his show offered plenty of visual spectacle with custom graphics, vintage film clips and heavily treated live footage flickering on the numerous screens that decorated the stage. One of the most effective combinations of audio and visual happened during “The Satanic Rites of Blacula,” a track from his most recent album “The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy” that blended footage from the 1972 cult classic with pentagrams and blood red washes of color.

Zombie’s solo songs can get a bit murky, but “Living Dead Girl,” “Superbeast” and “Dragula” helped make the night a blast.

Emma Norsgaard Joins ‘Dream Team’ Lidl-Trek

tour de blast 2023

Tour de France Femmes stage winner signs three-year contract with American Team

Lidl-Trek is thrilled to announce the signing of 25-year-old Danish talent, Emma Norsgaard, to its women’s team roster through 2027. Norsgaard, an all-rounder known for her versatility and sprint, becomes the third major addition to Lidl-Trek’s 2025 women’s roster.

Norsgaard burst onto the scene in 2016, when at just 16 years old she claimed the Danish elite national road race title, signaling the start of a promising career. Since then, she has racked up an impressive 15 career victories across a variety of terrains, including a commanding bunch sprint win at the Giro d’Italia, victory in Le Samyn, and a daring long-range breakaway at the 2023 Tour de France Femmes.

Although she initially made her mark as a sprinter, Norsgaard has evolved into a polyvalent rider capable of excelling across diverse terrains. Her versatility was on full display with her Tour de France Femmes stage win – a victory she considers her crowning achievement to date. Now, Norsgaard sees herself as a classics specialist with a quick finishing kick and dreams of one day winning the prestigious Tour of Flanders.

Commenting on her move to Lidl-Trek, Emma Norsgaard said, “This team has always been a dream team for me, and I really had the feeling that they have confidence in me and believe so much in me. I am so proud to become part of one of the absolute best teams in the world. I already started dreaming about the upcoming season after my first meeting with Trek. I am really looking forward to become a better cyclist and make a plan to reach my dreams together with my new teammates. I am hoping to be the best version of myself and the best possible teammate.”

Lidl-Trek General Manager, Luca Guercilena, expressed his enthusiasm for Norsgaard’s arrival, stating, “Emma is a phenomenal talent with a wide range of skills. Our Team is well-known for its aggressive racing style, and I believe Emma will align perfectly with this. Her Tour de France stage win epitomized this attacking, never-say-die attitude.

Even though Emma has been racing at the highest level for several years already, she is still a young rider. We believe she has the potential to become one of the top riders in the classics, and we’re excited to support her development over the next few years. She’s a rider who knows how to win in different scenarios, and we’re confident she’ll be a key asset to Lidl-Trek.”

Lidl-Trek looks forward to supporting Norsgaard in the next stage of her career, helping her pursue her goals while strengthening the Team’s performance at the toughest races. With her talent and ambition, she is poised to be a key figure for Lidl-Trek in the years to come.
