Fun Kid-Friendly Things to Do in Manhattan Beach

#12 – have a picnic and play at polliwog park.

Polliwog Park is one of the biggest parks in the South Bay and it’s definitely worth a visit! The park has a large pond that’s perfect for spotting interesting birds, an amphitheater for events, and a 9-hole disc golf course.

Plus, there are plenty of play areas for kids of all ages. The large lighthouse-inspired play apparatus is great for older kids, with several slides, misters, and a small sand area. There are also three separate areas for younger children, filled with newly upgraded, colorful, and imaginative climbing and exploration structures.

Outdoorsy Things to Do in Manhattan Beach

#16 – surf (or watch the surfers) at el porto.

One of the most popular surf spots in the South Bay due to the consistent swell and larger wave size, El Porto draws some of the most experienced surfers in the area. If you have experience surfing, this is where you’ll want to get in the water! If you’re a beginner, just make sure the waves are on the smaller size.

🏄🏽‍♀️ Surf Lessons

Ride the beautiful waves of Manhattan Beach with some of the best instructors in the industry.

There are usually stands right on the beach renting out boards. Or, you can just hang out on the beach and watch the surfers shred.

Either way, once you enter the parking lot to El Porto Beach at Highland Ave. and 45th St. – you’re in for a very southern California experience! At all times of the day, the parking lot is full of surfers of all ages getting ready to head out into the water.

El Porto beach at sunset

For beginner surfers, I VERY strongly recommend taking a surf lesson. It can be difficult to learn surfing, especially on your own, and you will greatly speed up your learning curve and have A LOT more fun if you take a lesson (or a couple) right off the bat.

Even as an intermediate surfer, I take a lesson every time I go to a new spot because it’s best to hear from a local expert surfer who can cover basic surf etiquette, tide, and wave dynamics of the area, plus safety and surf technique for new surfers. Additionally, surf lessons include the rental of your equipment for convenience.

me and some friends surfing in the South Bay LA

2-hour surf lessons are offered at the Manhattan Beach Pier and include a wetsuit and surfboard.

#17 – Play Beach Volleyball

Looking for a fun way to enjoy the outdoors? Why not try beach volleyball? This popular sport originated in Los Angeles and is a great way to get some exercise while spending time in the sun. And you don’t even need to bring any equipment – the beach is lined with nets, so all you need is a volleyball and some good energy!

view of Hermosa Beach from on top of the pier

#18 – Explore the Manhattan Beach Botanic Gardens

The Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden is located in Polliwog Park and is open daily with free admission. It features habitats native to California and a demonstration garden intended to inspire guests to create their own earth-friendly native gardens, wildlife habitats, and bird/butterfly sanctuaries. Take some time to wander around and enjoy the gardens and fresh air.

#19 – Workout at Bruce’s Beach

Bruce’s Beach is a stretch of land that was once owned by minority families before being turned into city parkland. Recently, it has been renamed to reflect its history. Take some time to read the signs and learn more about the historic significance of the park while enjoying the beautiful landscape.

At the bottom of the park hill, there is a small outdoor workout set up along the Strand beach path. Between the equipment, hill, and stairs leading down to the sand, you can get a great outdoor workout!

Manhattan Beach strand

#20 – Or, Exercise at Sand Dune Park

Located a few blocks inland from the beach, Sand Dune Park is a great area for visitors and residents alike to get a good workout in on the giant 100-foot-high sand hill. The views are great from the top of the dune and there is a small children’s park at the bottom for kids to enjoy.

Reservations are now required to use the Sand Dune.

#21 – check out the roundhouse aquarium.

Located in the building at the very end of the Manhattan Beach Pier, the Roundhouse Aquarium is a small, educational aquarium. As you walk in there are two large tanks on either side with fascinating fish that you could find in southern California waters. There is a touch tank for kids to explore some ocean critters and an upstairs area featuring a few extra specialty tanks as well.

#22 – Stop by the Manhattan Beach Art Center

The Manhattan Beach Art Center is a great place to experience the visual arts. The center features exhibitions by local, national, and even internationally acclaimed artists, as well as by emerging artists. The exhibitions seek to strengthen exposure and understanding of the visual arts in the community.

In addition, the art center serves as a space for art education and production through visual and performing arts classes, camps, and programs. The friendly staff is always happy to answer any questions you may have about the exhibits or the center itself. So whether you’re a longtime fan of the arts or just getting started, be sure to stop by the MB Art Center.

The Art Center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free and there is free parking in the back or on the street.

#23 – Stroll Along the Veterans Parkway (Valley Drive)

The greenbelt on Valley Drive is a lovely walking path full of shrubbery and plants that runs for 3.5 miles from Manhattan Beach, through Hermosa Beach, and down to Redondo Beach. Also known as the Veteran’s Parkway, it’s a great place for a walk when the sun is beating down too hot on the beach.

The stretch that runs through Pier Ave in Hermosa has some outdoor workout equipment in it if you want to take your exercise up a notch before turning around.

#24 – Walk, Bike, or Skate Along the Strand

The Strand is a 22-mile bike path that runs along the ocean, starting at Torrance Beach (at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula) and stretching north all the way up to Santa Monica. It hits all of LA’s most popular beaches along the way, including all of the South Bay beaches.

There are plenty of places to rent bikes and skates along the Strand. Most of them are concentrated either in downtown or El Porto Beach, so plan to start in one of those locations.

bikers at Manhattan Beach Pier

#25 – Learn Local History at the Manhattan Beach Historical Society

The Manhattan Beach Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the city. Located in Polliwog Park in a unique old building, the collections include artifacts, photos, books, videos, films, old newspaper articles, and recordings of historical events. There is also a bookstore and gift shop onsite.

The Historical Society is open to the public for free and offers a variety of educational programs and events throughout the year. The Society’s collections are a valuable resource for research and education and it’s a fascinating way to learn more about the local culture.

The MB Historical Society is open on Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM to 3 PM .

#27 – Grab a Margarita and Watch a Game at Sharkeez

Sports bar meets Mexican fiesta at this local southern California chain. There are always great drink deals and happy hour specials going on at Sharkeez, so head over to grab a bite to eat or some drinks any night of the week!

#28 – Head Over to Hermosa Beach Pier for a True Night Out

Manhattan Beach has a pretty casual nightlife, you won’t really find anything too crazy beyond grabbing a drink at a cocktail lounge or bar. If you want to go dance and let off a little more steam, head to the next town over and check out the bars that line the Hermosa Beach Pier.

⭐ Best All Around: Ayres Hotel

For an all-around great stay at an average price, the Ayres Hotel is an excellent choice. It is elegantly decorated with an almost European-style, full of gorgeous artwork and unique furniture. Located closer to the freeway than the beach, this is a better option for those who have a car or plan to explore more of Los Angeles and southern California.

💸 Best Budget Option: The Belamar

This is an adorable, beachy boutique hotel located about 1.5 miles from the beach. It tends to be cheaper than other hotels in the area but still has quality service and comfort.

Manhattan Beach, CA

How to Get Around

The easiest ways to get around Manhattan Beach are to drive, walk or bike, and Uber. If you are staying by the beach or downtown you can probably pretty easily walk or bike to explore most of the area.

However, if you want to explore other parts of the South Bay, everything is spread out just enough that driving (or taking an Uber) is more convenient. Plus, if you want to leave the South Bay to explore the rest of the LA and OC areas, it will be best to have a car.

DiscoverCars – Best LA Car Rental

👉 If you want to  rent a car , I recommend and use  DiscoverCars   while traveling. They compare prices across rental companies to provide you with the  BEST  deals and  LOWEST  prices.

❗ Make sure to book your car ASAP so there’s availability!

Weather + Best Time of Year to Visit

The temperature rear round typically varies from 55°F to 75°F and is rarely below 45°F or above 83°F. This makes Manhattan Beach an ideal destination for those who enjoy mild weather year-round and want a beach town with many great things to do.

The best time of year to visit is from  August to October  when kids are returning to school and the crowds start to thin a bit. This is also when you will get some of the best (warmest and sunniest) weather.

Manhattan Beach Pier in the background

Is Manhattan Beach Better Than Hermosa Beach?

They are very different towns, so it depends on what you are looking for. Both Hermosa and Manhattan Beach have that great, laid-back beach SoCal vibe. However, Manhattan Beach is a bit more upscale, and the restaurant options and shopping certainly reflect that. Head to Manhattan Beach if you want finer dining and smaller, casual but very nice bars.

Hermosa Beach tends to host more and bigger events because of the large pier that is pedestrian-only. Hermosa Beach is also better for nightlife and if you want more of a dive bar and party scene. It’s also a bit more touristy at times because of the draw of events and nightlife, whereas Manhattan Beach has a very strong local feeling to it.

June 3, 2024

It’s hard not to feel an odd sense of utopia wash over you while you're driving down the coast and into Manhattan Beach. Known mostly for its volleyball courts, beachfront homes, and those new parents who can somehow afford them, the beauty of this coastal town is undeniable. No longer just a crowded stretch of the South Bay where you can eat fish tacos, Manhattan Beach has become a serious dining destination in recent years. There's a new crop of restaurants (and some enduring old ones) that have officially put the rest of LA on notice. Here are the best of the best.

Fishing With Dynamite image

Fishing With Dynamite

A meal at Fishing With Dynamite feels like eating raw scallops and lobster rolls in a friend’s charming cottage in Nantucket. This tiny oyster shack right up the street from the beach comes from the team behind Ryla and Manhattan Beach Post , and it remains one of our favorite seafood restaurants in the city. FWD’s raw bar has more hits than Mariah Carey, but we also love dishes from the rest of their menu—you’ll find a creamy plate of koshihikari rice porridge with uni mixed in and a perfect mini-pan of key lime pie with flame-roasted mountain peaks of Italian meringue. Bring a small crew for a casual birthday hang inside or have a breezy date night at a little table on the sidewalk out front.

The Arthur J image

The Arthur J

Manhattan Beach

Arthur J is the Jeff Goldblum of steakhouses—we haven't met anyone yet who is immune to its charm. The dark leather booths and sleek walnut ceilings inside this spot radiate laid-back swank. the kind you'd usually find in a members-only supper club. Steaks are cooked over a wood-fired grill, giving the meat a deep, notably smoky flavor that you might expect from backyard BBQ. Once you've decided which cut you want, choose a couple of sauces, butters, toppings, and sides to round out your red meat dream. We're big fans of their filet mignon cooked medium rare with a side of chimichurri. Keep this spot in mind when you want a steak dinner that feels both classic and cool without being too over the top.

Ercoles 1101 image

Ercole's 1101

If you need a dive bar and a killer burger in Manhattan Beach, Ercoles is the place to be. Regulars drink cheap beer and play pool in a space that looks like it’s been minimally updated since it opened in 1927, aside from a few faded Budweiser posters. The char-grilled, backyard-style burgers here are among the best in LA , made with beef sourced from the butcher shop next door. Between the $12 burger, the affordable drinks, and the straight-out-of-a-Jimmy Buffet-song people-watching, Ercoles is the kind of joint every beach town would be very lucky to have.

Esperanza Cocina de la Playa image

Esperanza Cocina De La Playa

If you want to eat somewhere that feels like a luxury resort in Cabo, head to Esperanza Cocina de la Playa. It’s a Mexican spot about four blocks up from the beach with a striking curved facade and an all-white dining room that could rival any designer boutique on Rodeo Drive. They specialize in top-notch margaritas and upscale seafood dishes like crab enchiladas. We especially love their selection of ceviches: The version with shrimp and pineapple is sweet and tart, tossed in a spicy mango-tajin broth. Share it at a table near the entrance to catch a nice breeze while watching people clog the sidewalks on their way to the pier.

Manhattan Beach Post image

Manhattan Beach Post

When this cheffy, farm-to-table-esque restaurant opened in 2011, the Manhattan Beach food scene was basically known for pancakes and a well-placed Sharkeez. MB Post changed all that. And while it might not be as groundbreaking as it once was, it still sets the standard for Manhattan Beach dining. The vibe is upscale but relaxed, and everything from the brussels sprouts to the skirt steak is worth ordering. But it’s the weekend brunch situation that wins our hearts—set your sights on a plate of cheddar bacon biscuits.

Pisces Sushi image

Pisces Sushi

For sushi and a scene in Manhattan Beach, head to Katsu-Ya or Sugarfish. For great sushi, period, head to Pisces Sushi. This small, mom-and-pop restaurant along Highland Avenue doesn’t offer seating, but locals swear by the well-priced takeout sushi. You’ll find a tight menu of the usual sushi bar staples here, including neatly wrapped rolls drizzled in the right amount of sauce. But if you want to appreciate the quality fish that makes Pisces a gem, order a few pieces of nigiri or sashimi, or their popular chirashi bowl, which costs less than $20 and comes with fanned-out slices of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, and scallop.

Petros image

When it comes to Greek food in Manhattan Beach, Petros is uncontested. The formal spot is located in a pleasant outdoor mall with a courtyard, where people wait an hour or so for a table on weekends. Much like a large supply of bubble wrap, the lamb chops with fries here never fail to please us. They're filling enough to share with at least one other person. You should also order the grilled octopus and tender beets dish drizzled in olive oil, which goes well with a glass of sparkling rosé on their wraparound patio that fills up on warmer nights.

Un Caffe Altamura image

Un Caffe Altamura

Un Caffe Atamura is a counter-service European spot that’s about as casual as someone’s living room but much more versatile. Stop by for breakfast and lunch service during the day, or come back in the evening when the place transitions into a wine bar. From ham and cheese croissants to matcha pancakes with blueberry-basil creme fraiche, they serve exactly the kind of food you’d want after a morning stroll along the pier (and few dishes cost more than $20). If you’re looking to share something more substantial, they have a couple of seafood pastas and entrees like a piece of grilled salmon on brioche.

El Sombrero image

El Sombrero

While there’s always been a decent crop of casual Mexican joints in MB, nothing comes close to El Sombrero. This decades-old staple with two locations in the neighborhood has a long menu of solid dishes, and few things cost more than $15. It’s the kind of cheesy, saucy, old-school Mexican food you’d want after a long day at the beach. We’re talking enchiladas, chile rellenos, and wet burritos the size of your forearm.

Uncle Bill’s Pancake House image

Uncle Bill's Pancake House

When it comes to true Manhattan Beach classics, it doesn’t get more real than at Uncle Bill’s. The 55-year-old staple has been an MB breakfast go-to for years and has the weekend lines to prove it. If you can get in, you’ll be rewarded with what’s easily the best pancake and waffle situation in town. And now with the newly expanded side patio, you’ll get insane ocean views as well. Caution: They close every day at 3pm. So get your hungover ass up and make it happen.

Tin Roof Bistro image

Tin Roof Bistro

Back out in inland MB, Tin Roof Bistro has developed a large following for basically one thing: bocce ball. Oh and good food, of course. But seriously, you never see bocce ball in LA and it’s here at Tin Roof ready for the taking. But if you’re not in the mood to be rolling balls around, Tin Roof has one of the best wine lists in the South Bay, an amazing patio, and a solid American menu that has something for everybody.

Love & Salt image

Love & Salt

There are lots of forgettable Italian restaurants in Manhattan Beach, but Love and Salt is one of the exceptions. The menu at this sky-lit trattoria is both crowd-pleasing and interesting, with lots of pizzas and pastas, plus an excellent brunch burger and housemade English muffins so good people eat them at dinner. Love and Salt's dining room works for almost any occasion, whether that’s a sexy dinner date or a solo pasta and glass of wine.

Simmzy's image

Simmzy's

Though Simmzy’s can be found all the way from Long Beach to Burbank these days, something about the original MB location resonates. Situated in the heart of the city's main drag, the somewhat cramped brunch spot is basically the essence of Manhattan Beach. Beautiful people, good food, and everybody getting day-hammered on mimosas because it’s Saturday and that’s what you do.

Nick's image

Nick's

Located in a fancy outdoor mall straight out of a Williams Sonoma catalog, Nick’s has all the ingredients to be yet another corporate lunch/brunch wasteland. But it’s not. And it’s because the crowd-pleasing American comfort food menu—think seared ahi salad, cioppino, and fried chicken plats—is pretty delicious, with great service and an even better patio to boot. It’s not a complicated formula, but this all-day downtown restaurant has it figured it out.

The Strand House image

The Strand House

The thing about The Strand House is the food is fine. Some of it might even border on being quite good. But it doesn’t matter, because that’s not why you’re here. You’re here for that view. And residing in a giant three-story building with unobstructed ocean views, you won’t find a better one than at The Strand House. Sitting in that main dining room and watching the sunset with a margarita and plate of hamachi crudo is something we could do every day for the rest of our lives.

Rock’N Fish image

Rock'N Fish

From the outside, Rock'N Fish looks more like a Ruby Tuesday’s than a place you actually want to be eating at, but looks can be deceiving. And this family-friendly restaurant steps from the beach serves good food and perhaps the most famous cocktail in the neighborhood: The Navy Grog. We don’t want to know the sugar intake in this rum-based cocktail, but we do want another one. Oh, and those crab cakes are quietly some of the best you’ll ever have.

Fishbar image

If you’re over the downtown crowds (and the dire parking situation that comes with them), Fishbar is the answer to your prayers. This casual, beachy seafood shack on the north side of town is where the actual locals (or at least the smart ones) go for day drinking, brunch, catching a game, or even a first date. The food here is solid, and we recommend anything with lobster. In particular, that mac and cheese. Pick us up some when you’re there, please.
