Country hitmaker Kane Brown bringing ‘Blessed & Free” tour to Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Kane Brown has accomplished a great deal in not a long amount of time.

It’s been six years since the Georgia native released his first EP and five since he signed a major label deal. Since then, he’s scored two No. 1 country albums, both certified platinum or better (2018′s “Experiment” debuted atop the Billboard 200 as well) and nine Top 10 Country singles.

This year Brown, 28, became the first Black artist to win the Academy of Country Music Award for Video of the Year (for “Worldwide Beautiful”) and Time magazine put him on its latest list of the 100 Most Influential People.

Brown’s Blessed & Free Tour -- named after his latest single, collaboration with H.E.R. – arrives Sunday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. It is his biggest yet, taking the four-sport high school jock to arenas in 35 cities. And he’s working on new music, for himself and for Restless Road, the first band Brown has signed to his 1021 Entertainment label...

You’ve made it to arena headliner status. What’s that like for you?

Brown: It feels awesome. The shows have been amazing. We’ve been working to get to this point. I’ve always wanted to be there, and we’re finally here. The next step is to go beyond that, so we just gotta keep finding ways to just stay different than anybody else.

How hard, or easy, is that?

Brown: The difficult part is just the music. Like for the next album, the hardest thing I’m doing now is (deciding) which direction I want to do next. But being different, that just comes natural for me. I even look different than everybody in country music, so that’s the easy part.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about race in country music -- in some ways the latest round started with you back in 2015 or so. What kind of impact has that made on you?

Brown: I don’t talk about it much. I put it in my music. I go out and do my shows and let people see me trying to help change things through my media. It gets weird when I get thrown into all that. I feel like it gets very political, and I’m not a person to talk about politics. Don’t get me wrong -- it is cool when people come up and tell me things or say I’m the first for this or first for that, just referring to my ACM Award. It’s an awesome feeling, but also, why can’t I be an artist who won this award, not the first Black ACM artists?

What’s the story behind the “Blessed & Free” single?

Brown: That was a song I wrote at this pop retreat in Nashville two years ago. I thought I was gonna shelve it; I didn’t like it with just myself. Then H.E.R. jumped on it. She wrote her own version, and she killed it. That convinced me to release the song. I don’t know what our intentions are for it. I know it will be on the (next) album. It’s been doing great for us even without radio. Once it gets on the album, more people will hear it.

What’s the status on the album?

Brown: Man, I’ve got enough songs to release it tomorrow. But I want to keep trying to write things. I lived with some of these songs for a year or two years. I’ve had ‘em for so long they kind of get old for me. I know they’ll be new to fans who haven’t heard them, but this is gonna be my third album so I want this to be the best it can be. I don’t want the fans to get mad, but I’ve pushed (the release) back again.

Is there any sense of direction yet?

Brown: I’ve got one song that I’ve fallen in love with called “the Devil Don’t Even Bother.” It kind of sounds like “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” The verses sound very old school, the choruses sound very new school, but there’s old school fiddle, slide guitar and all of that. It’s kind of cool, but I wonder if it’s too old sounding, until you get to the chorus. My mind goes all over the place.

Are you your own worst enemy when it comes to thinking and over-thinking and being a perfectionist?

Brown: (laughs) I fight with myself all the time. I’m about to bring a (studio) bus out on the road and try to write some more songs. If I don’t think those songs are better, I’ll say, “Screw it. Go with the ones you had that you liked in the beginning.” But hopefully what happens is I write some songs and end up loving them.

You must be pleased that you’ve been able to try so many different things under the banner of country music. That’s not always an easy genre to experiment with.

Brown: We were very nervous at first. But I’ve told country music that I’ll always have a single for them, first, ‘cause I know a lot of artists come into country music just to get into the music industry, then they leave. I just think that’s kind of whack. So, I’ll always make sure I have a country single first. Even with the (new) album, I’m only going to have two pop songs on it. So, they see that as well. I’ll always have at least eight to 10 country songs.

What’s it like being one of Time’s most influential people?

Brown: It was cool. I never looked at myself as, like, an influence. And then I had a lot of people come up to me to say how cool it was I was leading the charge, that they can look up to me. That’s what opened my eyes up to the situation. It felt very, very cool.

Do you feel settled into the career at this point, or do you stay hungry?

Brown: I’ve always been hungry. I never settle. I’m trying to break into the movie scene right now, spreading my wings like that and see where it takes me. I’ve done two auditions already and kinda got a call back. I like action movies, I like horror movies, but honestly, I’ve never been in a movie so I’ll get whatever I can get and we’ll see where that goes. I’m trying to do my Tim McGraw days. (laughs)

Kane was amazing and I truly had a great time. He has such an amzing voice and an even more amazing story that he shared with all of us about his tough upbringing. He truly deserves to be living out his dreams. He is full of energy too and felt that he was very interactive with the crowd and kept everything fun! He's the best.

Just not to long ago I have heard of Kane Brown. One night I was looking at yup tube and I watched the what if video and the video and song was incredible. So I listened to more of his songs and right away I bought his CD's and fell in love with his music and his voice. His concert was great. Now I am 48 years old my baby sister and my mom and her best friend went and we had a fantastic time. I also love the fact that he interacts with the audience and he also brought out the other two singers that opened up for him. I will go see him again definitely. Great time. Great show.

Named “the future of country music” (Billboard), Multi-Platinum-selling, award-winning singer/songwriter Kane Brown recently released the follow up to his 10th #1 single at Country radio- “I Can Feel It” and announced his 2024 In The Air Headlining Tour. Brown first broke onto the scene with the arrival of his self-titled, 2X Platinum debut album (2016), where he became the first artist ever to lead all five of Billboard’s main country charts simultaneously and topped the Billboard Top Country Albums chart for 13 weeks and earned two of the most-streamed country songs of all time (chart-topping singles 9X Platinum “Heaven,” 7X Platinum “What Ifs”). His album Experiment (2018) hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 all genre list-becoming the first Country artist in more than 24 years to top the chart with a sophomore album. Brown released his multi-song project Mixtape Vol. 1– which earned Brown an ACM Award nomination for Album of the Year (2021) and an ACM win for “Video of the Year.” Named to Time’s 100 most influential people in the world (2021), Kane Brown has ascended from independently built social media notability to an ACM Entertainer of the Year nominee (2023)-and has become one of country music’s most accomplished mainstays and global entertainers. Joining Brown as openers on various dates on the tour are Tyler Hubbard, Jon Pardi, Chris Young, Bailey Zimmerman, Cole Swindell, Parmalee, LOCASH and RaeLynn.

Brown was saluted with the international award during the ACM Honors celebration in Nashville, and earlier this year wrapped the international leg of his Drunk or Dreaming Tour, which visited cities including Sydney, London, Amsterdam and Berlin.

The “Famous Friends” singer just notched his 10th Country Airplay No. 1 hit with “Bury Me in Georgia,” and is gearing up to release his new single, “I Can Feel It,” on Sept. 21. The song samples Phil Collins’ drum solo from his 1981 top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hit “In The Air Tonight.” Collins is credited alongside Brown, Gabe Foust and Jaxson Free as a writer on “I Can Feel It.”

“I was playing Stagecoach and doing interviews there on-site about what would be amazing and unexpected performances you’d want to see happen,” Brown said in a statement, noting his 2023 headlining performance at Stagecoach Country Music Festival. “I think I surprised a lot of interviewers with my answers- which were ‘Cher, Phil Collins…’ and the next day I was writing in Canada and went into the write with those Icons on my mind and just love the way the song came out. I immediately knew I wanted it as my next single.”

The new swath of shows kicks off on March 16 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and continues through Evansville, Indiana; Greenville, South Carolina; Columbus, Ohio; Lexington, Kentucky; Huntington, West Virginia; Knoxville, Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee; and St. Augustine, Florida (for two nights); before concluding in Greenwood Village, Colorado on June 10.

In other recent news, Brown recently made history at the 2022 VMAs by becoming the first male country artist to perform on the award show . During the Sunday night broadcast (August 28), Brown performed his latest single, “Grand”—a fast-paced number that is his most pop-infused yet.

“People told him he wasn’t country enough,” Jack Harlow said as he introduced the singer before rattling off his long list of accolades. “Now he can make whatever type of music he damn well pleases.”

Brown is the first male country artist to perform on the show since it launched in 1984. Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift have also taken the VMA stage in recent years to represent the country world.
