Things to consider when buying a pram capsule

Safety is number one when it comes to choosing the right pram capsule. Consider:

• Size of the car - Do you have a small car or a large car? How many children will you need to accommodate in the car?
• Installation - Does your car already have an ISOFIX anchorage point in it or will you need to use the seatbelt with a tether strap connected to an anchorage point?
• Compatibility - Is your pram capsule compatible with your brand of pram and adaptors? UPPAbaby and Baby Jogger City prams are compatible with some Maxi Cosi capsules.
• Weight - Make sure that your carrier can be easily lifted with a baby inside. Most of our pram capsules weight around 4.5-5kg without a baby.

Fitting a capsule into your car

Infant capsules should always be installed using the manufacturer instructions that come with your product. This ensures that they will be correctly fitted according to the specific brand and type of pram capsule. Baby capsules must be held in place using either an ISOFIX base or the seatbelt with the tether strap being attached to an anchorage point, not a luggage point. What is a pram capsule?

A pram capsule is a convertible car seat for newborns that lets you take your sleeping baby from pram to car and back again without disturbing them. With the right adaptors, pram capsules can be lifted out of the pram and fitted into the car seat using a carry handle to take you both to the next destination. When you arrive, simply detach the capsule from the car and place it back into the pram to easily transport your little one wherever you go.

What is the difference between a capsule and a car seat?

Pram capsules are an all in one travel system that can be used as both a pram and a car seat. They help you to move newborns up to 12 months of age from pram to car and back using the same baby carrier so as not to wake them when they’re sleeping. Capsules for prams use adapters to convert them into detachable car seats that are always rear-facing. A convertible car seat is permanently attached to the car and can be forward-facing or rearward-facing. These car seats can be used up to 4 years of age and grow with your child.

The idea of flying with kids might be a challenge for travelling parents. While there are no guarantees for a smooth trip, these tips might help make travel with children easier and keep everyone in a good mood!

One way to make travelling with your baby easier is to use a baby capsule during the flight. Using a baby capsule is a easy way to not only get your baby safely to the airport, but you will also use it when you arrive at your destination.

Our Maxi-Cosi Mico Plus baby capsule is officially approved to be used on aircraft. Which means that you can now take your baby capsule on a car, on a train and on a airplane.

What are the benefits of taking your Mico Plus baby capsule on a flight?

There are plenty of benefits of taking your own Mico Plus Baby Capsule on a flight. Your child will feel more comfortable and calmer on the flight when strapped into his or her own familiar car seat. In unexpected turbulence or emergencies, the seat will keep your child safe rather than when you keep your child on your lap. Airlines may have bassinets available. But your baby lies in a bassinet unrestrained, so it is not a safe substitute for a baby capsule. The Maxi-Cosi Mico Plus is your trusted travel companion, both on land and in the air!

Taking a car seat on board? Prepare to enjoy the flight:

• The baby capsule needs to be airplane compliant under the 1754 AS/NZS standard.  
• When booking your flight, we strongly recommend you inquire if the airline accepts baby capsules on board. Ask the airline for a discounted fare, as buying a ticket for your child to get a separate seat is the only way to guarantee that you will be able to use the child seat. 
• Reserve adjoining seats. Place the baby capsule in a window seat, so it will not block the escape path in an emergency. Please remember that baby capsules are not allowed in an emergency exit row. 
• If you do not buy a ticket for your child, ask if your airline will allow you to use an empty seat. If your airline's policy allows this, avoid the busiest days and times to increase the chances of finding an empty seat next to you. 
• Ask your airline if they can provide a bassinet for your child. If this is available, you may not be permitted to bring your own baby capsule on board, and may need to check it in as baggage. The bassinet does not come with a harness so your child lies flat but unrestrained. An available aircraft bassinet is not an option to avoid bringing a baby capsule. For safety, there is no replacement for a car seat either in flight or when you get to your destination and need to travel further by car. 
• In turbulence, you will be required to remove your baby from the bassinet and hold him or her on your lap, when your child is safer in its own baby capsule. The bassinet has to be stowed for take-off and landing, so you will need to take your child out again. 
• Carrying a child, luggage and a seat through a busy airport can be challenging. Get to the airport ahead of time and ask for assistance. Alternatively, there are trolley-like boards specially designed to pull along your seated child in a bigger (toddler) car seat. 
• Like in the car, the safest place for your little one during turbulence or an emergency is in an approved baby capsule, not on your lap. 
• Bring a variety of toys to keep your child entertained during the flight.

Our single model ROVER3 (bassinet & stroller set) has the following features:

• This option is lighter and more compact than the DUO3.
• The seat is slightly deeper so a tad more spacious for larger kids.
• You cannot add a second seat though, instead, you'd attach the toddler board which allows a 2+ year old to stand on and roll along behind.
• Some parents want to avoid pushing over 50kg worth of kids, stroller and gear at all costs so having the flexibility of the toddler board may appeal to you.

Our single/double model DUO3 (bassinet & stroller set) differs from the ROVER3 in a number of ways:

• Slightly heavier and bigger to be able to accommodate up to 50kg in double mode!
• This converts from a single to a proper double (not just adding a tiny rumble seat) so you have a huge amount of configurations available to you.
• Larger wheels so handles off-road conditions slightly better.

Our pram bassinets are not tested for overnight safe sleeping practices and we recommend you monitor your little one regularly while napping in their pram. There are currently no Safety Standards for bassinet safe sleeping in Australia. Some companies will state compliance with an international standard however we have been advised by industry experts (Red Nose and IMPAA) that they would never approve a pram bassinet as a safe sleeping environment which is why we continue to encourage regular monitoring.

The connection points where the bassinet/seat attaches to the frame are different in both size and shape between the ROVER3 and DUO3 models. This means that the ROVER3 seat or bassinet cannot be used on the DUO3 frame. Similarly, the DUO3 bassinet and seat cannot be used on the ROVER3 frame.
