Cape Town Itinerary: Ideas for Planning 3, 5 and 7 day Itineraries for Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town, arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world, is a must-visit destination in South Africa. Whether you have just a weekend in Cape Town, or stay for 10 days, you’ll get a real feel for the city and its incredible atmosphere. However, there are so many things to do in Cape Town it’s hard to know where to start! So I thought I’d write out several plans for a Cape Town itinerary covering varying lengths to help visitors with their planning.

My Cape Town itinerary ideas are based on my own experiences in the city, but my South African boyfriend has also contributed. He lived in the city for more than 6 years. I really hope you’ll find these useful and that they help you plan your trip to Cape Town, South Africa.

Cape Town Itinerary Guide

Why go to cape town.

Many visitors travel to Cape Town and proudly declare it as one of their favourite places in the world. The amazing thing about this, is that it can be for very different reasons.

In fact, there are few cities in the world that can really appeal to so many peoples’ different interests. Outdoor activities are literally just minutes from the Cape Town city centre. From wine farms, the incredible V&A Waterfront, the excellent dining and world-class driving routes, a Cape Town itinerary can certainly be varied. There are few other cities that offer such a smorgasbord of activities so close by as Cape Town.

However, you aren’t really seeing Cape Town if you don’t understand the people who built this city. Visiting the museums, Robben Island and a township are essential to knowing that you’ve really  seen  Cape Town.

Is it safe to go to Cape Town?

It’s a question that crosses most peoples’ minds when considering a trip to South Africa. The truth is, yes – it’s definitely safe to go to Cape Town. But it would wise to take certain precautions and to be mindful on your travels throughout South Africa.

A concern over safety applies to virtually all travel destinations but for Cape Town. But based on my personal experience, these are my top tips for staying safe:

• At night, take a taxi from A to B and don’t walk even short distances
• Don’t flash any expensive goods and products whilst walking around the streets
• Close your windows and lock your doors at traffic lights
• Don’t go hiking at night, unless joining a tour

Personally, I felt safe everywhere I went in Cape Town. I even walked from the Tamboerskloof neighbourhood (under Lions Head), down the hill to Bo Kaap and onwards to the V&A. I would say there weren’t many other tourists walking, but I put my camera away in my bag and used common sense to direct myself to the waterfront (instead of pulling out my phone repeatedly), and I really did feel fine.

The areas of Long Street and Bree Street, which are nightlife areas, can be prone to some muggings or attacks late at night.

But really – I live in London where crime is common. Just take normal sensible precautions and don’t walk around at night, and you should be fine. Don’t overthink it – after all, millions of tourists visit Cape Town each year and have issue-free visits.

Practical Information

Getting to cape town.

The Nelson Mandela International Airport is the main gateway to Cape Town for international travel. Many airlines fly here from around the world, including British Airways and South African Airways (both direct from London Heathrow), as well as Emirates (from Dubai), Qatar Airways (from Qatar), Air France (from Paris) and TAPAir (from Lisbon).

From the airport to central Cape Town, you can take a taxi and the official taxi provider is Touch-Down Taxis. It’ll cost around R300 and R400. There is also the airport shuttle bus to the centre of town which runs from 5.30am to 9.30pm for around R60. R100 is approx. GBP 5 or USD 7.

Getting around Cape Town

If you’re staying somewhere central in the CBD of the city – such as the V&A Waterfront, you’ll be able to walk to quite a few key Cape Town attractions or jump in a taxi for a quick ride. Overall, for safety issues and sometimes a lack of pavement, it isn’t the most walkable city.

For things outside of the centre, such as the Cape Peninsula or the Cape Winelands , I’d recommend either hiring your own car for maximum flexibility or joining a local tour. Cape Town, although having much of the activity concentrated in its CBD, is also very spread out.

The MyCiti bus service is fairly well connected around Cape Town, and crime isn’t too bad on this mode of transport. However, unless travelling in larger groups, I would not recommend taking the train around the city, for example to Simon’s Town.

As Uber is so widely available, and the option of taking tours is there, you may not need to use public transport or rent a car to get around Cape Town.

Another idea is to use the City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off tour bus, which takes tourists to all the key sites across the city.

Renting a Car in Cape Town

Hiring a car in Cape Town offers you a wonderful degree of flexibility and freedom.

Parking is nearly always straight forward – there are often plenty of spaces and a car parking attendant (in a high vis jacket) will help direct you. You just leave your car in the space, and tip the attendant a R5 coin on your return as a way to say thanks for keeping an eye on it!

Top tip: Don’t leave any valuables on sho w at all in your car – for both driving and when you’re parked up.

The roads in Cape Town are also pretty good and well maintained with good signage. You could opt for the extra level of insurance just for peace of mind.

However, the greatest concern around hiring a car in Cape Town comes down to crime. Robberies do sometimes take place at traffic lights and sadly, ‘smash and grab’ robberies are becoming increasingly common. That being said, I spent a full month driving around South Africa and didn’t have a single dodgy issue, not least in Cape Town. There are a few people loitering around the traffic lights (called robots in South Africa) but they didn’t bother us at all.

Best time of year to visit Cape Town

November to March brings out the very best weather in Cape Town and the South African summer is considered the best time to go. Expect long, hot, sunny days and little rainfall. December is the busiest time in Cape Town with the biggest crowds.

The winter months are July and August which can be cloudy and cool with increased rain. It’s worth knowing that the sea in Cape Town is freezing year-round. It never warms up!

Where to Stay in Cape Town?

For ease of access to several of the main attractions in Cape Town, I’d recommend staying in the area closest to the V&A waterfront.

If you want to be next to the beach, I’d recommend staying in Camps Bay.

Although, if you hire a car and are looking for a luxurious experience, I’d recommend some of the hotels along the coastline from Camps Bay.

Here are a few suggestions for excellent hotels in the different neighbourhoods of Cape Town:

V&A Waterfront area:

• One&Only Cape Town – easily one of the most glamorous hotels in Cape Town
• Cape Grace – one of the city’s most sought after locations
• The Silo Hotel – luxury and style in one, it’s a new Cape Town icon
• Radisson RED – offering a good value stay in the heart of the action
• Taj Hotel – a beautiful hotel in a fantastic setting

Other areas in Cape Town CBD:

• Belmond Mount Nelson hotel – this famous pale pink hotel has grounds that need to be seen to be believed
• De Waterkant House – very affordable and a brilliant central location
• Holiday Inn – a well known brand in a convenient location and at a great price

Camps Bay hotels:

• 3 on Camps Bay – a beautiful and well priced boutique hotel
• South Beach Camps Bay – views and a stunning pool, this is a great value stay
• POD – super hip and ultra affordable

Other coastal hotel stays:

• Compass House in Bantry Bay – for views and excellent service
• Twelve Apostles Hotel – an affordable stay in a super luxury hotel in an incredible setting
• Cape View – located in Clifton, you can live like a local in this beautiful area
• Ellerman House – one of Cape Town’s most exclusive hotels, with views to match

Is Cape Town expensive?

No! One of the best things about Cape Town and South Africa in general is its affordability. Food, drinks, activities and transport are all very reasonably priced.

Cape Town Itineraries

Cape Town is a true melting pot of cultures, set amongst possibly the most beautiful back drop anywhere in the world. Its CBD is lively, vibrant and cosmopolitan, with an endless array of excellent restaurants and bars. The beaches in Cape Town are some of the best in the world and its mountains are jaw-droppingly beautiful. From clifftop drives, up-close encounters with wildlife and history lessons like no other, Cape Town is a one of a kind destination.

3 days in Cape Town

If you only have three days or less to get a feel for Cape Town, I would recommend learning about Apartheid at Robben Island. I would also suggest visiting nearby Constantia to sample some of the finest South African wines and spending an afternoon soaking up the rays at Camps Bay. So without further ado, here’s my suggested 3 day Cape Town itinerary:

Leave your hotel located in V&A Waterfront and spend a relaxing morning enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the cafes, together with the street entertainers and resident seals in this giant marina.

After lunch at the waterfront, drop by the nearby District Six Museum . Here, visitors can learn about the forced ejection of local communities from the Sixth District in Central Cape Town.

Following this, head to the pier to take the boat over to Robben Island . This is an absolute must-visit on any trip to Cape Town and essential for all visitors to deepen their understanding of apartheid. Robben Island was used by the South African government during the apartheid era (early 1960s to 1991) as a prison for political prisons. Its most famous prisoner was, of course, Nelson Mandela.

A full afternoon is required to visit Robben Island as the ferries run on very set times. Visiting sooner rather than later also means you may have the chance to have a tour led by a former inmate who now work as guides – hearing first-hand of their experiences is quite something. Essential info for this itinerary:

V&A Waterfront: Open every day until late. Location: 19 Dock Rd, Cape Town

District Six Museum: Open Mon to Sat 9am – 4pm. Closed on Sundays. Guided tours half past the hour throughout the day. Location: 25A Albertus St &, Buitenkant St, Zonnebloem, Cape Town . Admission Cost: Self-guided R45 or guided for R60

Robben Island: Open daily with ferries at 9am, 11am and 1pm. You must book the tour in advance through their website. Location: ‘The Nelson Mandela Gateway’ Pier. Ticket Cost for Adults: R550 (Foreigners) and R380 (South Africans)

Time for an early start! Early morning is a great time to hike Lions Head .

Enjoy some early morning exercise and witness what is likely to be an incredible sunrise. It takes 2-3 hours to reach the summit of Lions Head and go back down again. This is depending on your fitness level and how many times you stop to take in the amazing views. The path is well-trodden and clearly marked, so you can’t get lost. The final stages to the summit are a little more challenging and likely to be difficult for those less able. But, for those who don’t want to scramble the final section, you can still go pretty high up just by walking.

As you wind around the ‘Lions Head’, you’re greeted with unbelievable views from every side. Whether it’s of the city, Table Mountain or Camps Bay – it’ll blow you away.

Afterwards, I recommend heading back to your hotel for a shower before heading over to Bo Kaap for breakfast. This is the very cool and colourful Malay quarter of Cape Town. Its heritage is multi-cultured, mostly due to the many slaves who settled in this area in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, it’s a highly Instagrammable location but remember, people still live in these homes today so do be mindful of this!

Top tip: There have been some reports of muggings in Bo Kaap in the afternoon, so visit in the morning. If you see anything odd, make sure to move on

Spend a couple of hours in this area before heading over by car or uber to Camps Bay for the afternoon.

Camps Bay is the ultimate beach lifestyle place in Cape Town. It’s the perfect place to grab a long lazy lunch at somewhere like Tiger’s Milk or The 41, before catching some rays on the sand. With the backdrop of the Twelve Apostles, there are few beaches that are this scenic.

Stay for sunset and enjoy drinks at one of the lively bars before heading back to the CBD for dinner.

Lions Head: Open every day and free to enter. Location: You can get to the start point ( location here on Google Maps ) by uber or hire car. If you want to hike this at sunset, consider joining a local tour .

Bo Kaap: Free to wander this neighbourhood. There is a small museum open every day except for Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Admission Cost: R20 for adults

Camps Bay: Free and easy to wander this beach neighbourhood.

No trip to Cape Town is complete without a trip to one of the three Cape Winelands . For a 3 day Cape Town itinerary, I’d recommend visiting Constantia which is closest to the centre of Cape Town.

I’d suggest spending a full day along the Constantia wine route including stopping for lunch. Not only is the scenery spectacular but you’ll be surprised how quickly a day goes hopping between vineyards! Two of the best vineyards are Groot Constantia and Fairview Wine Farm .

5 days in Cape Town

This itinerary builds upon the 3 day itinerary with some other key inclusions. From an excursion to the Cape Peninsula for stunning scenery and wildlife encounters, to visiting Table Mountain and participating in a township tour. So here’s my suggestions for a 5 day Cape Town itinerary:

After a day of sampling some of the world’s finest wines, it’s time to do something completely different. Head to the epic Cape Peninsula ! Not only is this a stunning drive, taking in several charming spots, such as Simon’s Town, Kalk Bay, but it passes by several beautiful beaches. It even incorporates Chapman’s Peak drive, considered one of the most incredible drives in the world. The route winds its way alongside the cliffside with a sheer drop to the ocean on the other side.

This is best done as a self drive so you can stop as you please. But you can also join on tours or the big red bus tour.

I’d recommend starting the Cape Peninsula drive at Muizenberg beach (also worth a visit). From here, you can drive the route round to Cape Point and then onwards to Chapman’s Peak and onwards to Camps Bay. Then you can visit in time for sundowners at somewhere like The Lawns at Roundhouse.

Boulders Beach, aka the penguin beach is also located on this route. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can get up close and personal to a wild penguin colony. And the African penguins are very cute too. Make sure to check out my full guide on visiting Boulders Beach here .

Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope : Open everyday from around 6am to 5pm in the summer months, with slightly shorter opening hours in the winter. If your vehicle is still in the park after sunset, you risk being fined. Entry fee (per person): R303 (Foreigners) or R76 (South Africans) Location: Route from Cape Town on Google Maps here .

Boulders Beach : The area (part of Table Mountain National Park ) is open daily from around 8am to 6pm, depending on the time of year. Entry fee: R152 (Foreigners) R39 (South Africans) Location: 4 Boulders Place, Secluse Ave, Simon’s Town, Cape Town

Chapman’s Peak Drive: This is a toll route, with varying tariffs depending on your motor. You can drive this route any time of day.

Visiting a township can be considered a controversial activity, but I sit in the camp that it is not poverty tourism, but instead insightful and beneficial to the local community.

We visited Langa township on a small group tour with Siviwe. It was really interesting and a positive experience. Not only do you learn about the ongoing legacy of apartheid but also how the communities are striving to improve their quality of life and prospects for the future. More than 80,000 people call Langa home, even though it’s one of the smaller townships in Cape Town. I’ve written a long and detailed guide to visiting Langa township in Cape Town here.

After this, and perhaps a spot of lunch back in the CBD , it’s time to tackle Table Mountain. Whether you hike one of the paths (some of which are quite strenuous), or take the cable car, the views will not disappoint. Table Mountain looks over the whole city of Cape Town and is a symbol of the ‘Mother City’. It’s one of the most iconic cityscapes in the world.

The cableway at Table Mountain doesn’t shut too often, unless in high winds – so keep this in mind if the wind picks up. You may have to hike back down.

You need to pre-book your tickets for Table Mountain. This is one of the most popular attractions in Cape Town, and queues can be rather long!

Head to nearby Kloof Street for dinner. Or enjoy a sunset cruise from the V&A Waterfront to take in the stunning city from the water.

Langa Township: Tours need to be booked in advance through this site here. The tours depart nearly every day at around 9am, 12pm or 2pm, lasting around 2 hours. Ticket cost: R350 per adult with your own transport

You can actually buy a township and Robben Island Combination tour ticket here too

Table Mountain: Open every day, with the first cable car up at around 8am. The last cable car comes back down between 6pm and 8pm depending on the time of sunset. Cable car location: Tafelberg Rd, Gardens, Cape Town Admission Cost: R290 per adult. This has to be bought in advance to avoid long queues!

7 days in Cape Town

Planning to spend a week in Cape Town? There’s still plenty to do, in fact – the longer you can spend in Cape Town the better. Here’s a few more day plans for a 7 day Cape Town itinerary:

Start your morning at Sea Point . This central neighbourhood is focused around a lengthy promenade. Here, you’ll see young and old Capetonians running, cycling and roller blading against the backdrop of Table Mountain. Start with breakfast at one of the local coffee shops, then hire your own bike to explore this area and cycle back to the V&A Waterfront.

Visit Kirstenbosch National Botanic Gardens. These are considered some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. Make the time to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the botanical gardens and explore the elevated canopy walkways. Afterwards, why not hit the beaches at Clifton for an afternoon in the sun. Or visit one of the Cape Town foodie markets. Get in with the locals and sample delicious local food. Two of the best can be found at the Old Biscuit Mill market in the hipster district of Woodstock on Saturdays, or at Oranjezicht City Market in the V&A Waterfront on Saturdays and Sundays.

Kirstenbosch Gardens : Open every day from around 8am to 8pm during the summer months, with slightly shorter opening hours during the winter. Admission cost: R70 Location: Rhodes Dr, Newlands, Cape Town

Clifton Beaches . There are four of these beaches, each adjacent to each other and sheltered by Lions Head. Location: Clifton, Cape Town Admission cost: Free!

Do a day trip from Cape Town . I’d recommend either visiting one of the other Cape Winelands that’s a little further afield, such as Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. Both are less than one hours’ drive from the CBD but feel a world away. Whichever you visit, you’re bound to be blown away by the stunning scenery.

Stellenbosch is one of the oldest town’s in South Africa. It is a traditional and charming university town with many world class vineyards. One of my favourite vineyards here is Babylonstoren . It’s a magical Cape Dutch farm that has been transformed into a winery, hotel and has the most incredible grounds for exploring. Visit for the day and stop for lunch at one of its amazing restaurants.

Franschhoek is a charming village filled with artisan stores, art galleries, fine restaurants and a world famous wine tram that takes visitors on a tour around several vineyards without having to drive!

Alternatively, you could spend a day beach hopping. Cape Town and surrounds are home to some of the world’s best beaches . Why not stop by Bloubergstrand? It’s a beautiful stretch of the softest white sand, with Table Mountain in the distance.

Signal Hill . This is the perfect place to witness a Cape Town sunset. It’s a busy spot but take a picnic up and join the locals and tourists gathering there each evening. If you’re on the big red bus tour, they also stop up there.

Cape Town Itinerary Ideas

So there you have my 3, 5 and 7 day Cape Town itinerary suggestions. By all means, you can switch days around or do things in a different order. In fact, you might want to keep the weather in mind and stay flexible. For example, timing your visit to Lions Head for a sunny day so it isn’t shrouded in deep cloud.

I think Cape Town is truly one of the greatest cities in the world and no matter how long you spend there, you’ll leave with fond memories. From the friendly people, exceptional food, extraordinary scenery and interesting history, it really is a destination like no other. In fact, I would happily live in Cape Town!

Cape Town has many great neighborhoods, all spread out fairly sparsely around the mountain and the oceans. Each suburb has its own unique style and charm, but most of the attractions are situated around the city center.

It’s a wise move to stay somewhere central during your weekend in Cape Town. By doing so, you’ll be able to minimize travel time and make getting back home at night easier. You’ll also find yourself nearer to many of Cape Town’s incredible bars and restaurants, as well as its shopping hotspots and tourist attractions.

Make sure you choose your accommodation wisely. From hostel to hotels and guesthouses in Cape Town , there’s the right one for everyone.

The CBD (central business district) is the bustling hub of the city, located at the base of the looming Table Mountain. Know How to Get Around in Cape Town

Getting around Cape Town is quite different to getting around in most other major tourist cities. For starters, the city is spread out between a vast number of suburbs covering an expansive area. Walking isn’t a viable method of transport in Cape Town, although walking around within the different suburbs is a great way to explore.

Secondly, while taking public transport is an option, it isn’t quite like what you find in most first-world countries. There is a network of buses and trains, but delays and cancellations are commonplace, and safety can be an issue at times. For getting around the city, the Myciti busses are your best bet. They’re safe and fairly efficient, but not yet up and running in some areas.

If possible, we recommend hiring a car during your trip to Cape Town. Having a car will help you avoid the headaches of using a poorly organized public transport system, and allow you to explore Cape Town more freely! You can book your rental insurance with RentalCover.com to be fully covered.

Uber is another great way to get around the city. In Cape Town, Ubers are affordable and numerous, meaning you’ll never have to wait too long for a lift or spend too heavily.

South African taxis are very cheap, can be found pretty much everywhere, and take you just about anywhere. The infamous taxis aren’t taxis as you know them: they’re mini buses that rush along a predetermined route, packed to the brim with passengers (generally far exceeding the load capacity!).

Riding these taxis is a cheap way of getting around, but safety can sometimes be a concern, so we recommend only riding in one if you’re with an experienced local.

Long Street and Kloof

• A great vibrant atmosphere and all of the best nightlife compressed into two streets
• Club entrance fees are affordable and the drinks are cheap!

Most of the city’s best nightlife venues can be found on Long Street and Kloof Street, a hotspot for backpackers in Cape Town. The neighboring streets are each lined with a myriad of bars, restaurants, and clubs. The atmosphere becomes vibrant when the sun falls away, and the streets fill with young locals starting their nights out on the town. 

Observatory

• A great atmosphere, with plenty of destinations to wander between
• A great place to spend a whole evening, from dinner ‘til the small hours

Observatory, generally shortened to ‘Obz’, is a cultural hub and hipster paradise, just a short journey from the city center. Each evening, the main street in Obz, (Lower Main road), becomes a bustling network of energy. Restaurants and bars are plentiful, and the atmosphere is awesome.

Check out the vast, rustic, Jamaican style ‘Trenchtown’, with its large outdoor seating area, dance floor, vibrantly painted walls, cheap drinks, and tasty food!

Camps Bay is one of the classiest areas in Cape Town, with many international celebrities as its part-time residents. The suburb has a stunning palm-lined beachfront, with a wide bank of pure white sand and a plethora of restaurants and bars.

The Baxter is a beautiful theatre in the suburb of Rondebosch. Originally built in 1976, the theatre challenged the oppressive apartheid regime by staging experimental and multi-racial work. The cinema has hosted many theatre legends and consistently stages high caliber, critically acclaimed productions.

Summer sunset concerts

• Set in the lush Kirstenbosch botanical gardens on the sloping base of the mountain
• Big name local and international artists perform every Sunday during the summer months (November – March)

If you’re fortunate enough to be visiting Cape Town in summer (which we highly recommend), then you can’t miss the opportunity to see a summer sunset concert. Set in the lovely Kirstenbosch Gardens, the weekly Sunday concerts provide top-notch music performances from big-name local and international artists.

Sit on the sloping lawns amongst the foliage at the base of the mountain, with a picnic and drinks as the sun slips away and vibrantly colors the sky.

10 Other Awesome Things to do in Cape Town This Weekend

There are plenty more amazing things to see and during a trip to Cape Town. We’ve put together some of our favorites below!

#1 – Table Mountain

Table Mountain is the most unmissable attraction for any visit to Cape Town. Whilst the mountain is visible from the city, the best way to experience it is to head to the top. There are two ways to get up Table Mountain: take the famous cable car, or hike up.

Hiking up is an incredible experience, but not for the faint-hearted. It requires a decent level of fitness and takes a few hours. The cable car is quick and easy, with great views going up. Either way, the summit is just as beautiful. You’ll have 360-degree views of the stunning city and its oceans as you explore the top of this enigmatically flat mountain.

#2 – Drive Chapman’s Peak

Chapman’s Peak drive is often considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world. It hugs the mountain tightly on one side and has a sheer drop off to the Atlantic ocean below on the other. The road winds around the mountain, suspended high up and immersed in the landscape, with views that are unimaginably beautiful.

#3 – Explore Bo Kaap

Bo Kaap offers a lively portrait of South African life, with its vibrantly painted houses, cobblestone streets, and distinct culture. A tourist favorite and one of the best places to visit in Cape Town , Bo Kaap is a stunning suburb with a great atmosphere and is best explored on foot.

The area is a former township, once known as the Malay Quarter, and situated on the slopes of Signal Hill near the city center. It’s the oldest surviving residential neighborhood in the city, and it offers a truly unique experience to those who visit.

#4 – Wine Tasting

A trip to Cape Town wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the exquisite wine that is produced in the area. And there’s no better way to do so than at one of the farms where the grapes are grown and the wine produced.

Constantia is a lush, green suburb nestled below the mountain, and has many great wine farms that offer tastings. Groot Constantia wine farm is a great option. There, you can sample wines while you look out over the vineyard and learn about its 300-year history. They offer delicious food pairings as well!

#5 – V&A Waterfront

Set on the banks of a working harbor, the V&A Waterfront is South Africa’s most visited destination. You’ll find a host of great restaurants and bars, a world-class shopping mall, all sorts of entertainment, and an indoor food and craft market.

Local musicians fill the streets with traditional African music, and the atmosphere is truly inviting. You could easily spend an afternoon here shopping, eating, exploring, and soaking up the stunning views.

#6 – Zeitz MOCAA

The largest museum of contemporary African art in the world, Zeitz MOCAA contains an incredible range of stunning African art pieces. The exhibitions artfully explore philosophical concepts and uniquely African experiences across the museum’s seven floors.

It is rare that African contemporary art is appreciated on such a large scale. The museum acts as a solid platform for local artists to express themselves and gain the recognition they deserve.

#7 – Visit The Beach

Cape Town is famously home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and visiting the city without seeing them really isn’t an option. There is nothing more relaxing than kicking back on some white sand with a drink in hand and looking out over crystal blue waters.

There are plenty of beaches to include in your Cape Town itinerary , from the boulder lined Llandudno and Clifton beaches to the classy Camps Bay seafront. Boulders beach, with its native penguin residents, offers a truly unique experience!

#8 – Paraglide over the city

There is nothing more peaceful than gliding through the sky with your feet dangling, and there’s no better place to do it than Cape Town.

This tandem paragliding experience will turn your dreams into reality as you soar high above the city and the expansive Atlantic Ocean. You’ll take off by running down a gentle slope and cruise the skies for about 20 minutes before touching down. The views are exceptional, and don’t worry – the guides are top notch professionals with safety as their highest priority.

#9 – Aquila Game Reserve

If you have the time, we strongly recommend getting out of the city and heading to Aquila Game Reserve where you’ll see Africa’s famous Big Five . You’re pretty much guaranteed to see lions, giraffes, zebras, leopards, rhinos, and elephants!

Situated just a couple of hours drive from Cape Town, the game reserve is beautiful. This day trip includes all transport to and from the reserve, an entry ticket, and lunch.

#10 – Two Oceans Aquarium

The aptly named Two Oceans Aquarium is one of the best and most accessible ways to experience Cape Town’s diverse marine life. Located at the V&A Waterfront, the aquarium is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

You’ll get to see numerous species of sharks, including the famous great white, right up close! The museum is also home to a myriad of other underwater species, from turtles and penguins to jellyfish, manta rays, and much more! The aquarium is truly spectacular, and work hard to protect and preserve the coastline’s incredible ocean life.

What should I pack for a weekend in Cape Town?

You may be wondering what you should pack for your weekend in Cape Town, other than the usual  backpacking essentials . We’ve got you covered: – Weatherwise Clothing  – Cape Town gets really warm in summer, but can get quite chilly in winter. If you’re there in summer, you’ll want shorts, T-shirts, summer dresses, and flip-flops. In winter you’ll want trousers, closed shoes, sweaters, and maybe a jacket in case you get unlucky with the weather. – Swimsuit  – Cape Town has so many beautiful swim spots, that it would be a crime not to take advantage of them. Come prepared with some swimwear even if you don’t think you’ll swim – we think you’ll change your mind when you see it! – Plug adaptor  – South African plug sockets are pretty unique, but most appliances there work off of European plugs, so there are plenty of EU adaptors around. Be sure to bring an adaptor for either South African or European plugs..

Can I get an apartment in Cape Town for the weekend?

Definitely! Apartments are a great way to experience a new city, and Cape Town has an incredible range to choose from. Staying in an apartment can give you a more homely experience and offers you the chance to live more like a Cape Town local.  This designer apartment  in Cape Town is beautiful and centrally located right near Table Mountain. Apartments are a great option if you’re traveling in a larger group, as it can greatly reduce the cost of accommodation. Is Cape Town safe for a weekend trip?

To outsiders, South African cities are often seen as being generally unsafe. However, whilst crime is an issue in Cape Town, its many suburbs vary greatly in terms of safety. The areas which we’ve outlined in this  Cape Town travel guide are all safe , so long as you’re sensible. Due to South Africa’s oppressive and segregated past, Cape Town remains strongly economically divided. This, unfortunately, sets the stage for petty theft, as economically disadvantaged individuals make desperate attempts to get money. Whilst violent crime is uncommon outside of the townships, petty theft can occur pretty much anywhere in the city. When you’re in crowded areas, keep your personal belongings close, and try to keep them out of sight. Don’t walk alone at night, and always avoid poorly lit or vacant areas, especially if they give you a bad vibe. Follow these  travel safety tips  and use your instincts and common sense to avoid dodgy situations and individuals, and don’t make yourself look like an easy target. Lastly, don’t forget to bring sunscreen! Cape Town’s sun is hot in summer and can give you a nasty burn easily.

Discover Coastal Beauty and Cosmopolitan Charms in Cape Town, South Africa

Surrounded by the ocean on three sides, with Table Mountain National Park towering in the center, Cape Town is famous for its abundance of natural beauty. But there’s more to South Africa’s so-called Mother City than the beautiful beaches and lofty mountain peaks.

A few days here will allow you to delve a little deeper into the evolution of the oldest permanent settlement in South Africa, starting with the historic trading routes that saw the city established in 1652 and tracing its journey into a cosmopolitan city famous for seafood, creativity and culture. A week would be better, but if you’ve only got three days, here’s how to spend them.

As always, check for travel restrictions and closures before planning your trip.

Friday: Go on an Urban Adventure

Start your day in the Victoria & Albert Waterfront , a vibrant shopping and dining precinct set around the historic working harbor. Grab a pastry and a pour-over at Origin Coffee Roasting while you debate how to spend your morning. The V&A, as locals call it, is great for families, offering the Two Oceans Aquarium and entertaining boat tours in the harbor. It’s also the departure point for tours to Robben Island , the infamous island prison where Nelson Mandela was detained for nearly two decades. Be sure to leave time for the superb Zeitz MOCAA gallery of contemporary African art.

Next, discover the city center. Bree Street has become a bustling boulevard of boutiques, bars and restaurants — Clarke’s is an institution in the city, and a great lunch stop for salads, sandwiches and burgers — or keep wandering uphill to explore the colorful Bo-Kaap district, the historic home of the city’s Cape Malay community. Loop and Long Streets are filled with shops and galleries — try Merchants on Long for African design — while the shady Company’s Garden is a welcome respite on hot summer days. The garden will lead you to the National Gallery of Art, South African Jewish Museum and Iziko South African Museum; all are worth a visit.

From here, Table Mountain frames the skyline, and you can’t leave the city without riding the aerial cable car to the top. Book tickets online to skip the lines. The ride to the top takes five minutes, with rotating gondolas offering panoramic city views on the way.

From on high, you’ll marvel at the shimmering beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton — two of the city’s best sundowner spots. In Camps Bay, head to Chinchilla rooftop bar for sunset views and live music, or pack a picnic and head for Clifton. Alcohol is not allowed on public beaches, so plan accordingly. For dinner, circle back via Sea Point for old-school Italian cuisine and a seafood-heavy menu at La Perla , or book ahead for multicourse fine dining at PIER in the V&A.

Saturday: Discover the Fairest Cape

Whether you rent a car or opt for a guided tour, you’ll want to spend a day discovering the Cape Peninsula. A remarkable coastal road traces much of the route, and this day out delivers endless ocean vistas, wildlife encounters and a parade of charming seaside suburbs.

Your first stop is Muizenberg, a laid-back beachfront suburb that’s home to one of the best surf breaks in the city. Fuel up with a hearty scramble at Empire Café , then hit up one of the surf shops strung out along the beach for board rentals and lessons. If lounging is more your speed, five minutes farther on you’ll find the tidal pools and colorful beach huts of St. James and Dalebrook; they’re popular with locals year-round.

After your morning of surf and sand, it’s on to Kalk Bay, a delightfully bohemian suburb of antiques shops, cafés and galleries. Grab a pastry to go at Olympia Café and Bakery , a 103-year-old institution, and wander the charming harbor, where local fishing boats sell their catch on the quayside.

Keep following the coastline south, past historic Simon’s Town to the world-famous African penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Raised walkways offer close-up encounters, but there are also idyllic coves if you fancy a swim.

Then turn off at Cape Point Nature Reserve to explore this southern tip of the peninsula. There are walking trails and picnic sites, and it’s worth tackling the climb to the historic lighthouse. From here, the road bends north.

Stretch your legs and watch the surfers at Long Beach, or grab a late lunch at Noordhoek Farm Village before the glorious coastal drive around Chapman’s Peak. Browse the boutiques of Hout Bay, or hurry along to the pristine beach at Llandudno in time for sunset, before Victoria Road winds you back toward your city hotel. End your evening with dinner at the moody Belly of the Beast , which specializes in nose-to-tail tasting menus.

Sunday: Gardens, Grapes and Gastronomy

Cape Town is famous for its foodie scene, and you’ll want a day to sip and sample your way through some of the city’s finest restaurants and cellars. Start amid the bustle of the Oranjezicht City Farm Market , where you can stock up for picnics and grab a bite for breakfast from one of the many stands — whatever you do, don’t miss the pastéis de nata from Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery . Next, grab a taxi or ride-share to the Constantia winelands, a 20-minute drive from the city.

This is where, more than 350 years ago, the roots of South Africa’s vibrant wine industry took hold. Today this scenic valley is home to a dozen of the country’s leading cellars. It’s a history well told in the excellent museum at Groot Constantia , one of the oldest farms in the Cape.

Nearby Klein Constantia is famous for the iconic Vin de Constance sweet wine, while the modern tasting room at Steenberg Farm is a fine showcase for the cool-climate white wines of the region. Prefer red? Constantia Glen produces award-winning Bordeaux-style blends, while the tasting room dishes up fine vineyard vistas.

Though most wine estates offer their own cellar restaurants, the valley plays host to some of the best chefs in the country. Chef’s Warehouse at Beau Constantia delivers wonderful views alongside a superb set menu of small plates, while La Colombe keeps all eyes on the table with their inventive 14-course degustation menu.

In late afternoon, walk off the indulgence with a wander through Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden , a century-old oasis of indigenous flora that showcases the remarkable diversity of the Cape floral kingdom. In summer, sunset concerts here see local artists take to the stage against the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain. If your multicourse lunch hasn’t left you utterly stuffed, end the day with dinner at The Pot Luck Club in Woodstock for Asian-inspired small plates, seafood-forward dishes like grilled octopus and crispy squid, and sparkling city views.

Bo-Kaap : Walk with a local

We start the tour at 71 Wale Street where we discuss the origins of the oldest suburb in South Africa. Our walk then takes us past the Auwal Mosque, which is the oldest mosque in South Africa, which was started by enslaved people in defiance of Dutch law, in 1794 . We stop along the way and grab a koesiester, before walking down the street with all the colourful houses. This is the most-photographed street in South Africa. We then work our way towards Cape Town’s famed spice shop, Atlas, where you will smell the heady aromas of spices used in everyday Cape Malay cooking. These are the same spices used by slaves as an expression of freedom in their masters’ kitchens.

Signal Hill with beautiful photos

We will meet right at the top of signal hill car park area. From their you will have a view over Cape Town Waterfront and Greenpoint with Table Mountain and Lions head as your background. My photos tell a story with a natural, happy and romantic style. I keep posing to a minimum but do guide you in getting the best photos. The photo session will take up to an hour. You will receive your photos in less than two weeks on a downloadable link. Other things to note Best time for photos is early morning or late afternoon. Cape of Good Hope Tour

You will be picked up from your accommodation, then we will start by driving through Sea Point, Clifton, Camps Bay. These suburbs are also known as the Millionaires Paradise, with the mountains on one side and the Atlantic ocean on the other. We will stop at Maidens Cove for photos. Then we will continue to Hout Bay harbor, where you have the option to do the boat ride to Seal Island. We will then continue via Chapman's peak drive. This is one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the world, which also makes it perfect for pictures . Afterwards, we will pass through the town of Noordhoek, a perfect place to some local roasted coffee. Next stop will be the amazing sight of the African penguins at Boulders Beach. Lastly, we will end the day at one of the Worlds most famous view points at the CAPE OF GOOD HOPE NATURE RESERVE. From there we will take a drive back to your accommodation. Ocean Wildlife Encounter from a boat

This is a very different boat experience from those offered by the yacht companies in the Waterfront. There's no set route and the emphasis is on finding and safely and respectfully watching the amazing creatures in this spectacular environment. After a short safety briefing, our route is dictated by where I expect to encounter dolphins, whales, seals, penguins, sunfish, and other amazing ocean wildlife. A everyday in a township is a day to celebrate and have FUN. Join is us a taste of the vibrant lifestyle of Khayelitsha (Cape Towns largest), in just 5 hours together we will engage, learn, explore and immersive ourselves in various spaces in the community. E-bike ride to Chapman's peak with beach walk

Meeting at one of Cape Town's more popular Cyclist's destinations , we will set off riding on high-end road or mountain bikes depending on tailored route for your groups skill/fitness whether you an elite hitter or weekend warrior. This could entail a scenic 20 – 100km loop of the most beautiful undulating roads and trails of the Cape Peninsula. Meandering though the less used roads/tracks we will be on the lookout for wildlife whilst engulfed by indigenous Fynbos and shown hidden vantage points of the peninsula by your Pro. With the Indian and Atlantic ocean breezes briskly blowing on our peloton we will tempo over the mountainous scapes back along the coast cliffs. Cape Town Helicopters Two Ocean Flight, twenty five minutes

Departing from the iconic V&A Waterfront that lies at the heart of Cape Town’s history where the city meets the sea. We take a helicopter scenic flight with Cape Town Helicopters along the Atlantic Coast viewing famous spots like the Cape Town Stadium, the 4 Beaches of Clifton, Camps Bay, Lions Head & then swing around the Twelve Apostles. Then along Hout Bay towards Muizenberg before heading back along Constantia winelands. We will point out many points of interest and history of the locations. On our final approach back to the V&A you will have an opportunity to take amazing pictures of Table Mountain. 20 Things to Do in Cape Town for Under R200

If you’re looking for some wallet-friendly activities in Cape Town, then don’t worry because there is a TON to do here for under R200. I mean, I’ve got 20 activities in this article alone! 

I have already written articles on free things to do in Cape Town and things to do for under R100 , so this blog post focuses solely on activities priced between R100 – R200. 

I’ve lived in Cape Town for 3 years now, so rest assured, I know all the best things to do on a budget. So whether you’re looking to check out the local wildlife, make your own chocolate, or just grab drinks, I’ve got you covered.

And for those not familiar with the South African Rand, here’s a quick conversion. At the time of writing, R200 is roughly £8.50, $11 USD, or €10 EUR. Exchange rates do fluctuate, so use this as general guidance only.

1. Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach is famously home to a colony of African penguins! Since it’s a protected area, there is an entry fee, which is R45 for locals or R190 for foreigners. 

I really think that Boulders Beach is a must-visit while in Cape Town, so the fact that entry costs less than R200 is a real bonus. The beach itself is absolutely beautiful, and there are always hundreds of penguins here. It’s so cute! 

Boulders Beach is about a 50-minute drive south of Cape Town. However, I highly recommend adding an extra 50 minutes to your journey and taking the scenic route. If you drive out of the city via Camps Bay, you can head to Boulders via Chapman’s Peak Scenic Drive , which is one of the most beautiful roads I’ve ever seen.

2. Wine Tasting

Hands down one of my favourite things about South Africa is the fact that it’s so affordable to go wine tasting here. In fact, it would be hard to find a tasting over R200 – that would be seriously fancy! 

If I listed every single wine farm that offers a tasting for under R200, we’d be here all day. However, there are some real standouts, so I’ll share a few of my favourites that I definitely think you should check out. 

Beau Constantia

Beau Constantia is one of Cape Town’s best known wine farms, mostly because it’s so dang beautiful! Visiting Beau is always a treat, and I love their experimental wines. You can expect to pay between R110 – R150 for a tasting here. 

Groot Constantia

Groot Constantia stakes a claim at being the oldest wine farm in South Africa. It doesn’t have Beau Constantia’s epic views, but I think the wine here is actually the best in the Constantia Valley! Plus, a tasting costs just R130 for 5 wines, and you get to take your glass home with you afterwards. 

De Grendel 

De Grendel is on the Durbanville wine route, and it’s a beautiful estate with epic views of Table Mountain. It was also the first wine farm I ever visited! You can do the 6-wine premium tasting for R130, or the flagship for R150.  

Klein Roosboom 

Klein Roosboom is a gorgeous Durbanville winery with an old world-y feel that I just adore. The white wine tasting costs R90 or the red costs R95, and both include four wines to try. Or, you can get the best of both worlds and try two whites, a rosé, and two reds for R120. 

3. Spend the Day at Oudekraal Beach 

Oudekraal is a nature reserve about 10 minutes south of Camps Bay, in the Bakoven area. I love spending a beach day here because you get beautiful views of the Twelve Apostles and Lion’s Head, and there’s a braai area, so you can play all day! 

Another reason I like visiting Oudekraal is that it’s great for swimming. The beach area is protected by rocks so you don’t get big waves here like you do at the Clifton beaches, and it tends to be quieter, too. 

Entry to Oudekraal costs R160 for foreigners, or R45 for locals. It’s open from 7 am until 6 pm in the summer, although during winter it only opens on weekends. I recommend packing a cooler full of goodies and getting here early to make the most of the day in this beautiful (and severely underrated) area. 

4. Do a Seal Cruise to Duiker Island

Duiker Island, aka Seal Island, is just off the coast of Hout Bay, and hundreds of seals can be found atop this giant rock at any one time. 

Best of all, you can cruise around seal island for just R110 on this boat trip . It lasts for about 40 minutes and you absolutely will see seals. I went snorkelling here and I lost count of how many I saw – and that was on a supposedly “quiet” day! 

Plus, Hout Bay is stunning, so taking in views of the surrounding mountains and coastline isn’t too shabby of an experience, and there’s live commentary on board to boot.

5. Enjoy a Meal at the Waterfront 

The buzzing V&A Waterfront area is home to a ton of affordable restaurants . It’s easy to find a meal for under R200 around here, as long as you know where to go!

Personally, I’m very partial to the Life Grand Cafe , as it has lovely harbour views, reasonably priced wine, and delicious food. Most menu items are under R200 here, from poke bowls to huge plates of pasta and their gourmet sandwiches and wraps. Yum! 

However, other affordable options include: 

• Primi , where you can easily get a main for under R100
• Mozambik , where curries cost R135 – R160
• Tasha’s 
• Tiger’s Milk

6. Sip a Sunset Cocktail at the 12 Apostles 

The 12 Apostles Hotel and Spa is about 10 minutes south of Camps Bay – near Oudekraal, actually! 

Their 3rd floor Leopard Bar is my favourite place in the city for a sundowner, because sunsets here are truly epic. The sky flashes such vivid colours and the views of the ocean, Lion’s Head, and the rugged coastline are just gorgeous. 

Plus, I’ve never needed to book to get a spot out on the balcony, as this is a bit of a hidden gem that’s a little out of the way. Cocktails here cost between R115 and R190, so grab one and make it last as the sun sinks dramatically over the ocean. 

7. Visit the Aquarium After 3 pm 

The Two Oceans Aquarium does a fantastic job of showcasing southern African marine life, and they actually do a lot of conservation work. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that you can get in for cheap after 3 pm each day! 

Yup, a ticket usually costs R250 per adult, but if you go after 3 pm, you can get in for just R190. This is really worth doing, as you only need 1-2 hours here. It stays open until 6, so the after-3 entry still gives you plenty of time to explore. 

8. Go Beer Tasting on Long Street 

I wouldn’t usually recommend spending much time at all on Long Street, but BeerHouse is worth braving this dodgy street in the CBD for. 

It’s housed in a bright yellow building that looks like it belongs in New Orleans, and it’s one of the best places to go beer tasting in Cape Town . And best of all, you can get their Beer O’Clock tasting tray for R180. 

As you can guess from the name, the tray is shaped like a clock and there’s a 100ml taster for each hour. So if you’re really into your beer, I highly recommend this! 

9. Eat Fish and Chips in Hout Bay 

Hout Bay is a gorgeous area, and it’s also home to the best fish and chips in Cape Town! 

Yup, Fish on the Rocks is right next to the ocean, and it’s easily identifiable by its bright yellow exterior. I highly recommend getting their hake and chips for R105, and then enjoying them outside as you gaze out at the beautiful bay. 

Honestly, for R105, you really can’t go wrong. I was also absolutely delighted that my fish and chips came in proper newspaper wrappings, old school style! 

10. Have Brunch (or Dinner) at the Oranjezicht Market

The Oranjezicht Market is Cape Town’s best known farmer’s market – and with good reason! Lots of local restaurants showcase their food here, and you can find everything from Ethiopian curries to German flammkuchen . Yum! 

The market is open every weekend until 2 pm, so it’s perfect for brunch. However, during the summer months, it also opens from 5 pm until 9 pm on Wednesday nights, so you could come for dinner. 

Either way, a meal here is unlikely to set you back more than R200… but is very likely to be delicious! 

11. Galileo Open Air Cinema 

Does life get more dreamy than watching a movie outdoors on a summer night?

I don’t think so! And tickets for the Galileo Open Air Cinema are super reasonable at R145 per person. Throughout the summer, they regularly host movies at Kirstenbosch Gardens, Century City, and even some of the wine estates in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. 

This would be such a cute date idea , so keep an eye on the schedule to find out what’s on!

12. Grab Coffee and a Sweet Treat at Jason’s Bakery

Every Capetonian knows about Jason’s Bakery. It’s got the best baked goods in town, and their iced coffee slush is to die for. 

Situated along Main Road in Green Point, Jason’s bake everything fresh on the day, and man do they do a good job of it. From pastries the size of my head to pies and their amazing sourdough bread, you are truly spoiled for choice here. 

Best of all, it’s pretty easy to find a coffee and pastry combo for under R200. You really can’t go wrong here! 

13. Rent a Bike at UpCycles

UpCycles is a bike rental company with stations at the Waterfront, Sea Point, and Camps Bay. You can pick up and drop off bicycles at different stations, so this is a super convenient way to explore Cape Town by bike! 

Best of all, bike rental costs R200 for 3 hours, which would be plenty of time to cycle along the coastline from the Waterfront to Camps Bay. In fact, you could get there and back in that time.

14. Enjoy Dinner and a Movie at the Labia 

The Labia is Cape Town’s oldest movie theatre, and it’s beloved for its vintage charm. Plus, they offer some great deals that allow you to see a movie and grab dinner at a local restaurant for R200 or less per couple!

For example, on Mondays you can get two burgers at the Wolf House restaurant and two Labia tickets for R200. Or, on Thursdays, you get two pastas at The Sanctuary instead.

15. The Sky Hi Ride

The Sky Hi Ride is a drop ride perched on the 28th floor of the Hotel Sky in the CBD. I think it’s safe to say that it combines a birds-eye view of Cape Town with a serious adrenaline rush! And at R200 per ticket, why not go for a ride?

Personally, I’ve always been a little too scared to do this, but I will one day! It’s open from 12 pm – 8 pm from Tuesday to Saturday, and you can get your tickets via Webtickets . 

16. Make Your Own Chocolate Bar 

This bean to bar workshop is a must for chocoholics! If you fancy learning about African chocolate, trying different types, and making your own personalised bar, then don’t miss this class! 

It takes place in the foodie hub of Maker’s Landing, and at R190, I think it’s well worth checking out. It would be a great indoor activity for a rainy day .

17. Signal Hill Sunset Bus Tour 

Watching the sunset from Signal Hill is a really famous thing to do in Cape Town, but if you don’t have a rental car , Ubering there can be a bit of a nightmare, as it gets so busy!

So instead, I highly recommend booking this sunset bus tour . This way, you get to cruise around the city in an open tour bus before enjoying a breathtaking sunset from Signal Hill.
