Disney Magic Itineraries

Disney magic review, review of disney magic.

The 1998-built MS Disney Magic cruise ship is Walt Disney 's first (oldest) liner with sistership Disney Wonder (1999).

The vessel (IMO number 9126807) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308516000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

DCL-Disney Cruise Line is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (shipowner). The company was incorporated in 1996 as "Magical Cruise Company Ltd". Walt Disney also owns the Bahamian private island Castaway Cay (exclusive port of call - for Disney ships only) and an exclusive Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral (Orlando Florida) . Disney cruises are marketed as "family vacations" and feature unique and exclusive activities, such as costumed Disney Characters, adults-only deck areas, dedicated facilities for teens, kids and infants-toddlers, signature (trademarked) shipboard facilities and activities, themed live entertainment.

MS Disney Magic cruise ship

The 1750-passenger ship Disney Magic provides some of the best sea travel vacation experiences. And just like all Disney businesses, the ship's primary market are families with small children (mostly kids younger than 8) - the major revenue provider for the Walt Disney company. However, on Disney Magic, you'll also find many passengers traveling without kids.

The ever first Disney ship, Magic was launched in 1998 to serve the special preferences of a new generation Disney package vacation fun fans. The Disney Magic ship design resembles the 1920's luxurious ocean liners, but what really makes this vessel worthy of its Disney name are all the Disney characters, special facilities, and unique fun activities on-board, along with the greatest kids programs at sea, the most Magic-al deck parties, and excellent service.

The CLIENTELE consists almost entirely of USA and Canada Disney cruise fun fans. The new Disney approach to children by age-related activities and specially dedicated onboard venues makes all ships mostly appealing for multi-generational travelers.

Disney Magic DRESS CODE - day casual and evening resort casual, meaning for men - jackets (no ties) and pants, and for women - summer dresses (no swimwear-shorts-jeans in the main restaurants at dinner). All Disney Magic 7-day sailings include one formal and one semi-formal night.

Disney Magic TIPS (totaling US $12 PP per day, automatically charged to guests' shipboard accounts), given to $8 waiters (dining room server $4, assistant server $3, head server $1) and $4 to cabin attendants. Additionally, a 15% gratuity is included on all bar drinks and onboard service areas.

Decks and Cabins

Most Disney Magic staterooms (877 total, in 22 grades) are 225-260-ft2 Balconies. The ship has 22 Suites, 362 Balcony, 235 Oceanview and 256 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are Royal Suites (845 ft2 / 79 m2 plus 185 ft2 / 17 m2 terrace).

The ever-first Disney ship Magic boasts elegant Art Deco decorations of public spaces and a most affordable luxury in all its staterooms, of which even the standard cabins are designed as mini-suites (separate bedroom and living areas).

All Disney Magic cabins are designed with families in mind - some of the most spacious and most elegant at sea, and of course - with "Mickeys" everywhere. Cabins are quiet and offer comfortable privacy, appealing to both families and people traveling without youngsters. Even the standard Disney Magic cabins boast a separate bedroom and a living area (common to mini-suite accommodations of other brands), 2 beds convertible to a queen, the living room including a convertible sofa (an option for 3rd single bed); many cabins also have bunk beds (for a 4th person).

Disney Magic family cruise cabins for families of 5 have a Murphy bed. Plenty of drawers, a closet with sliding doors, a desk-dressing table, a smart HDTV, electronic safe bos, 2 portable "Wave Phones" (with texting capabilities and coverage throughout the ship and on Castaway island).

A unique feature of all Disney cruise cabins are the split-bathrooms ("bath and a half" configurations) - one with a toilet and a sink, the other with tub-shower-sink (the cheapest insides with a single bath 1 sink). Decent bathroom amenities (soap-shampoo-conditioner-lotion), a hairdryer.

All Disney Magic suites are located on Deck 8 and feature concierge service, deluxe design elements, huge Jacuzzis, better quality mattresses and large verandas (among the additional amenities are robes, slippers, and a vanity pack).

The boat has 11 decks , of which 6 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Disney Magic dining options include 3 main restaurants with the most fun rotational dining scheme (whatever the restaurant, your table number is the same, as well as companions and servers), a traditional 2-seating (at 5:45 and 8:15 pm, the earlier cater to the youngest kids). The traditional "Lumiere's" restaurant is decorated Art Deco (French menu), the "Animator's Palate" boast special light effects and video LED screens, and the "Carioca's" is a Caribbean-themed dining room with the most fun waiters and decorated in beautiful bright colors (this restaurant is also available for breakfast-lunch buffets).

MS Disney Magic cruise ship

The Disney Magic ship food experience features ample portions (everything is on-board made), with several choices of salads and fresh vegetables, a great variety of seafood, meats, pasta, and naturally, a separate kids menu is available.

Casual dining onboard is called "Cabanas" (a buffet restaurant, located high up and aft (overlooking the stern, a great outdoor dining option). Deck 9 offers 3 fast-food stations - the "Pete's Boiler Bites", the "Pinocchio's Pizzeria" and the "Daisy's De-Lites".

Specialty dining options are offered at "Palo" (an adults-only fine restaurant (costs extra, located on Deck 10; reservations are required, it's a relatively small venue, so early booking is advisable). Italian (Med) cuisine, including superb fish and seafood dishes, the brunch here offers Champagne and cold buffet with seafood and meats, great salads and desserts, and hot made-to-order selections (eggs-meat-fish).

The room service menu is simple (cold sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, burgers, lasagna, pizza, cookies), the service is fast, and suite guests enjoy hot breakfast and dining room meals options. Free drinks (Coca-Cola products) are also available at meals and at the 24-hour drink pavilion (Deck 9 aft).

Follows the complete list of Disney Magic restaurants and food bars.

  • Lumiere's Restaurant (471-seat forward Dining Room; with two open Dinner servings - 5:30 p.m.-6 p.m. and 8 p.m.-8:30 p.m.; on 7+ day cruises features Gala Dessert Buffet)

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Disney Magic ship public rooms are nothing short to amazing. The "Walt Disney" Theater has a capacity of 977 seats and offers live performances and huge Disney productions (like Broadway-style musicals and classy review shows) on a 2-deck-high rotational stage. The "Buena Vista" Theater is smaller (showing Disney movies). Most of the ship's public spaces are on Decks 3-4-5. The most famous are: the Promenade Lounge (family-friendly, great music), Studio Sea (game shows, exhibitions, karaoke), the Atrium (a great place to meet Disney characters for an autograph, the place for the Captain's cocktail party and for Disney pin trading), 3 shops (on Deck 4 are "Mickey's Mates" (Disney memorabilia and postcards) and "Treasure Ketch" (logos, jewelry, watches), and the duty-free "Up Beat" is on Deck 3 (perfumes, liquor). The pool deck's adult section has a coffee house - the Cove Cafe (specialty coffees, bar drinks).

MS Disney Magic cruise ship

Like all Disney ships, the Magic has no casino (there's bingo with good jackpots). One of the features that make the Magic ship a special place to be is the deck parties, the highlight being "The Pirates in the Caribbean" Party - a great, most attended by all age groups themed Disney ship cruise fun.

Naturally, most of the shipboard entertainment is Disney themed (like the goldies "Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story", "Villains Tonight!" and the "Disney Dreams") with all the feature Disney characters). And there are Disney movies, including first-runs (shown in the ship's two theaters "Buena Vista" and "Walt Disney") and Disney 3D movies.

In lounges and clubs, there are numerous family activities during the day - dance parties, bingo, pirate quests, shuffleboard and video games tournaments, all kinds of contests, pool games, family karaoke, dance lessons, talent shows. Between dinner times, there is a short family-friendly cabaret show, with its adult version after hours.

Most of the adult-themed activities are at night for guests ages 18-25, like "Match Your Mate", "Singles' Mingle" and "College Club Social". The Magic ship's adult-only daytime programs are 3: the "Navigating the Seas" series (lectures and video info about the ship), the "Disney Behind the Scenes" series (about the "know-how" of Disney specials - from food to entertainment) and the "Art of Entertaining" series, all of which are at no additional charge (for wine tastings there's a $12 charge, $15 for martini and margarita tastings).

Disney cruise water park for kids Aqua Lab

MS Disney Magic kids cruise programs are the main reason for the Disney Magic line's high loyalty guests ratio. Designed with families in mind, there are several huge areas onboard, designated for kids with activities for every age level. All kids ages 3-10 have access to 2 interconnected club areas - the Oceaneer's "Club" (7-10 yo) and "Lab" (8-12 yo).

Kids clubs occupy an enormous space resembling a pirate ship, with PCs and TV monitors cloaked in treasure chests, and fun activities like cooking classes, games and contests, food-fests and pool parties. "Edge" is the tweens' club (11-13 yo) with PC and PS games, arts and crafts, and a bridge simulator for navigating a ship. The teen-only area (14-17 yo) is called "Vibe" (located in a funnel midship) - a special lounge with huge couches, flat TVs and video games, other hit activities are the dance parties and the karaoke. All kids programs (age 3+) are complimentary.

"It's A Small World" ship nursery (babies 3 months to 3 years of age) is at an additional cost of $6 per hour ($5 for the 2nd child). An online service allows guests to order from over 1,000 "Babies Travel Lite" products in advance of their sailing (delivered to their cabin). All services are also available on Castaway Cay. All Disney children counselors are college educated, well experienced and attentive.

Follows the complete list of Disney Magic lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

The Soul Cat Lounge (near Rapunzel's Royal Table restaurant/aft on deck 3) is designed to resemble Half Note Lounge from the movie (Joe Gardner's favorite music spot). The venue is music-themed, with a classic NYC jazz club ambiance and an interior featuring brick walls, wooden accents, comfortable leather seating (surrounding a stage for live music performances in the evenings), Pixar-themed artworks (record labels, concert posters, portraits of Dorothea Williams and her bandmates), music-themed design elements (record players, instruments, Joe Gardner's hat). Table-side are served local brews, signature cocktails (made with New York spirits), a selection of mocktails, brand coffees, sodas, zeppoles (Italian fried doughnuts).

The new production show "An Encanto Celebration" allows guests to engage in music, crafts, and storytelling alongside La Familia Madrigal (family from the Encanto movie). The experience includes meeting and taking photos with Mirabel and Bruno, a sing-along of Encanto songs, creating movie-inspired butterflies and flower crafts. During the show, guests can also enjoy a selection of Colombian beers, cocktails, sodas, film-inspired mocktails.

Itineraries

Disney Magic itinerary program is based on Caribbean and Bahamas roundtrips departing from PortMiami Florida USA , all visiting the DCL's private Bahamian island Castaway Cay .

In September 2020, the liner had planned a European (UK and Ireland) season with 7-day roundtrips from homeport Dover visiting Plymouth , Cork , Liverpool , Greenock , Dublin .

Following the Coronavirus crisis, for summer 2021 (June-September), the ship was scheduled to operate cruises-to-nowhere (mostly 2-3-night plus limited 4-night roundtrips) from homeports London-Tilbury , Liverpool , Newcastle , and Southampton . These unique for DCL itineraries (called "Sea Staycations") were open for booking by UK residents-only and without any call ports.

In fall 2022 the ship operated 7-day NYC to Bermuda (Kings Wharf) itineraries. Since November 2022, Disney Magic is homeported in Galveston Texas for short-breaks (4-night and 5-night) to Mexico's Cozumel and Progreso .

On February 18, 2023, started Disney Magic's homeporting in NOLA/New Orleans Louisiana . The program (run though April 10th) was based on 4-5-6-day roundtrip Western Caribbean itineraries visiting Cozumel (4-day), Cozumel plus Costa Maya (5-day) and Cozumel plus Grand Cayman/George Town Harbour (6-day).

Disney Magic Wiki

The Walt Disney ship Magic is company's first-ever liner, followed by sistership Disney Wonder . Each vessel is 40% smaller in size compared to the 2 newer Disney ships Dream and Fantasy . The inaugural cruise/Maiden Voyage started on July 30, 1998. Ship's Godmother was Patricia Disney (1935-2012) - wife of Roy Edward Disney (1930-2009) who was a senior executive (Vice Chairman and Chairman) for The Walt Disney Company in the period 1954-2009.

The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera yard/hull number 5989) is powered by Wartsila-Sulzer marine diesel engines (model 16ZAV40S) with total power output 58,25 MW. The propulsion system is diesel-electric.

Fun fact is that MS Disney Magic held the record for paying the highest-ever regular Panama Canal passing toll (exactly USD 331,200). However, the record was beaten later by the Princess Cruises ship Coral Princess (USD 400,000).

Outside, the vessel looks like an ocean liner from the early-20th century. Interior decorations are influenced by both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. On Magic debuted many of Disney's Marvel superheroes - a really thrilling experience for the youngest passengers.

Disney Magic refurbishments review

Disney Magic was last drydock-refurbished in 2023 (April 15 thru May 4) at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport .

The 3-week refurbishment included general maintenance works and machinery overhauls, as well as renovation of passenger cabins and public spaces. During the drydock, the Concierge Lounge was redesigned and all concierge staterooms (plus the Royal Suites) were completely refurbished with new fixtures, furniture, artworks.

A new music-themed venue (decorated in themes from Disney's computer-animated film "Soul"/2020) was created - Soul Cat Lounge (aft on deck 3). Also were introduced new movie-themed entertainment programs for families as well as the "An Encanto Celebration" production show (themed on Disney's animation film "Encanto"/2021).

During drydock 2023 was also installed shore power connectivity  allowing the ship to plug in and use the port city's power grid electricity for all onboard services while berthed.

Drydock 2019

During the refurbishment in 2019 were added Rapunzel's Royal Table (themed restaurant/aft on deck 3), the teen club was transformed, Cove Cafe (adults-only venue) was redesigned and Club Disney Junior (lounge part of Disney's Oceaneer Club) was added.

Also was redesigned the Rainforest Room in the adults-only Senses Spa (steam and hydrotherapy).

Drydock 2015

The refurbishment in 2015 (September 5-18, in Cadiz) was for extensive renovations (restaurants, bars, spa, atrium, staterooms, kids area), Dream-class concepts (waterslide starting near the funnel's top and swinging out over the side of the ship), lighting/audio upgrades.

The project also included general maintenance works and propulsion system upgrade.

Drydock 2013

The list of deck plan changes after the ship's 6-week long drydock 2013 refurbishment in Cadiz Spain (September 7 through October 10, at Navantia's Puerto Real Shipyard) included:

The Edge (teen club) was relocated (from deck 2 to deck 9), its area was expanded and the amenities there were enhanced (new gaming stations, dance floor).

Also were conducted general maintenance of all mechanical systems, hull and interior painting, piping, propulsion system upgrade (for reducing fuel consumption). 400+ contract workers were employed for all the refurb jobs.

Service history/itineraries review (1998-2016)

Follows the ship's concise service history (former itineraries):

  • [1998-2005] 7-day Caribbean from Port Canaveral (Orlando) Florida
  • [2005-2012] relocated to San Diego CA
  • [2012-2013] relocated to NYC New York and sailing from there to the Bahamas, Canada/New England
  • [2013 June] relocated to Europe ( Barcelona ) for the summer season, also receiving a 6-week extensive refurbishment. After the 2013 Transatlantic crossing started departures out of Miami FL , later was repositioned back to Orlando.

In 2016, Disney deployed the Magic ship in Europe. For the first time ever, Disney offered UK cruise departures (from Dover England) to ports in Baltic Sea (incl Norwegian Fjords), Iceland, UK (British Isles). Throughout 2016 summer, the ship operated in the Western Mediterranean (leaving from Barcelona ). After that followed a 12-day Transatlantic repositioning to NYC for round-trip cruises to Canada (5-6-day to New England - Saint John NB and Halifax NS) and 8-9-day to Florida-Bahamas (visiting Port Canaveral, Nassau, and the private island Castaway Cay).

Disney Cruise Line Planning Guide

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

This Disney Cruise Line planning guide covers things to do, packing tips, dining recommendations, Castaway Cay advice, and more. Whether you’re setting sail on a Caribbean itinerary aboard the Magic or heading to somewhere else, this will help you prepare. ( Updated March 9, 2023 .)

Let’s start with the good news, which is that as of 2023, Disney Cruise Line is largely back to normal for sailings departing from the United States and Puerto Rico. There are no longer vaccination or pre-cruise test requirements and face masks are now entirely optional.

Beyond that, entertainment is no longer modified, character meet & greets are no longer distanced, and all-you-can-eat buffets are once again self-service. There are still relatively minor ways the Disney Cruise Line experience remains modified, but nothing you’d notice unless you’re actively looking for it. The number of hand-sanitizing stations has increased, but that’s really about it.

The biggest change is that Disney Cruise Line has added a new ship to its fleet! The Disney Wish is now sailing on 3 and 4-night Bahamian cruises from Port Canaveral to Nassau and Disney’s Castaway Cay. We’ve been on this new ship a couple of times, and share whether it’s worth the premium pricing in our Disney Wish Cruise Ship Review .

We also have lists covering the “Best of” and “Worst of” the Disney Wish . Suffice to say, this new ship will be incredibly appealing for some families, and has a number of subtle enhancements that will improve the experience for some families. It also has frustrating and perplexing design decisions, and features that make it less appealing for certain audiences.

While we like the Wish, we prefer the legacy ships. That’s just our  personal  perspective based on our priorities and circumstances. You should read reviews and pros & cons to determine which ship is right for you. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

A few more ships will be added to the Disney Cruise Line fleet in the next 5 years, but the even bigger development on the horizon is that the Lighthouse Point Private Island Destination Opens to Disney Cruise Line in Summer 2024 . Lighthouse Point will offer beaches for families, adults, and kids–complete with play areas, cabanas, kids’ clubs, and more. One highlight will be the Bahamian art and culture pavilion featuring special programs and local artists will provide visitors to Lighthouse Point opportunities to learn and celebrate the traditions and natural beauty of The Bahamas.

We think Lighthouse Point looks incredible–like a mashup of the best parts of Castaway Cay and Aulani Resort in Hawaii! Only select sailings will stop at Lighthouse Point, so be mindful of that when booking your Bahamian cruises.

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

To that point, this Disney Cruise Line planning guide focuses on Bahamian cruises aboard the Disney Cruise Line fleet. These are the perfect “starter” cruises to discover whether you’re going to be a certified cruise addict, or if it’s not for you. While some of the specifics in this Disney Cruise Line Guide are tailored towards the Disney Magic, we have sailed on all of the other ships to a multitude of destinations, too.

Most of these same tips apply to the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wonder. This guide applies equally to those ships in terms of the basics of things to know before you go, and recommendations for activities and other things you should try to do once you’re on board the ship.

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

While we prefer the larger and newer ships, the Disney Magic is arguably the most approachable ship and often has the least expensive itineraries. It’s smaller (964 feet long and holds 2,700 passengers plus ~950 Cast Members), but the spaces feel fresh and modern. By contrast, the Disney Fantasy is 1,115 feet and holds 4,000 passengers (plus ~1,500 Cast Members).

Th overall style and aesthetic of the Disney Cruise Line is evident the moment you step aboard one of the ships and step into its lobby. The lobby is a signature area of each Disney Cruise Line ship, with each having a one-of-a-kind chandelier, beautiful design and detail work, and great use of color and lines. Now, this isn’t unique to the reimagined Disney Magic–the original design was stunning, too–but it just goes to show how well-designed the Disney Cruise Line ships are.

We will cover other elements of Disney Cruise Line in the sections that follow. Let’s get started with planning your voyage aboard Disney’s cruise ships!

What to Pack

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

One big one for the adults is alcohol. That’s right, you can take alcohol aboard the Disney Cruise Line in your carry-on bag when you board the ship or return from port. This used to be huge, because there were no limits. However, Disney Cruise Line now has a policy significantly limiting the amount of alcohol guests can bring on-board.

Other than that, all you need to pack is “basic cruise stuff.” We always recommend taking a look at our Unique Disney Packing List , which can give you some good ideas of things to pack, but the basics are a pair of quality water shoes and Frogg Togg Chilly Pads . You might want to consider the Frogg Togg Super-sized Chilly Cooling Towel for putting on your lounge chair to keep cool around the pool or on Castaway Cay.

If you plan on getting into the pirate spirit for the Pirate Night deck party, we recommend buying some random pirate accessories before the cruise. We did not do this, and the two of us spent ~$40 on random pirate stuff in the gift shop that we will probably never wear again. It was fun for photos and to just get us in the mood for the party, but lesson learned on that one…

Two more things that might seem obvious: swimsuits and sunscreen. You can buy both of these things on the cruise, but you will pay a significant premium. Make sure to take your sunscreen off the ship at Castaway Cay, as they will really price-gouge you if you need to buy it there!

Getting There

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

Although Disney Cruise Line sails out of many ports, the most common one is Port Canaveral in Florida. If you’re expecting a simple Disney’s Magic Express-type arrangement to get from Orlando International Airport to the Disney Cruise Line boarding area, you are in for a surprise, as there is no such free service. Instead, you either have to rent a car, take a non-Disney shuttle, or take a Disney shuttle. It’s fairly simple once you figure out which of these transportation methods you’ll be using, but figuring it out is easier said than done.

Disney’s transfer bus costs $39/person per way from either the airport or any Disney hotel, and is the easiest option. However, given the per person nature of the bus, it can be a more expensive option. It also is probably the least efficient option. You are at Disney’s whims in terms of pick up and drop off times, meaning that you may not be able to board the cruise ship as early as you would like. If you are a family of 4, a car service generally charges $200-300 round-trip, which is generally a cheaper option than Disney’s transportation–and it’s more efficient.

Renting a car is another option, and if you go this route, you will want to do a “one-way” rental from wherever your point of origin to Port Canaveral. Then, once you return, do another one-way rental from Port Canaveral to wherever you’re going. The reasons for doing this are two-fold: 1) you avoid paying for rental car days while you’re on the cruise, and 2) you avoid paying $15/day.

Sometimes, one-way rental costs have a higher per-day cost than round-trip rentals, but the difference should be insignificant. Sarah used this strategy when going on a cruise recently, and her one-way rental cost (times two) was only ~$50, as opposed to the $140 round-trip Disney shuttle cost she would have paid for her and her sister, or the ~$200 cost she would have paid to do a round-trip rental plus parking at Port Canaveral. This does require taking a shuttle from the rental car location to Port Canaveral, which Sarah found to be a hassle.

Even if you’re only a party of 2, two separate one-way car rentals are almost always going to be the cheapest option for transportation to and from Port Canaveral. This is a hassle in its own way in having an additional rental car booking plus having to use the rental car shuttle, but we feel it’s a good balance of autonomy, efficiency, and price.

disney-magic-verandah-stateroom

Cruise liners have reputations for having small, claustrophobic staterooms that guests should really only use for sleeping and showering. We are not here to suggest that the Disney Cruise Line ships are large and luxurious, but they have exceeded our expectations. On the one hand, they absolutely are smaller, smaller than even a room at a Value Resort at Walt Disney World.

On the other hand, they use space efficiently, are laid out so that you can use them for more than just sleeping and showering, and are well-designed. (I guess we sort of are going to say they’re luxurious!) They are still small and I wouldn’t want to spend more than a couple hours of free time in the stateroom each day, but the rooms are nice.

Not all of the rooms in the same class are the same! It might seem easy to pick a room since there’s only inside, oceanview, and verandah categories. However, there are actually several “secret” verandah and porthole staterooms, as well as mini-suites and oversized rooms, all of which are priced in a lower tier than you might expect .

As for which class of stateroom you should get, that’s entirely up to you. On our first cruise, the cost of upgrading to a verandah was insignificant, so we did that. We quickly realized that for a short cruise, we weren’t spending enough time in the room to get our money’s worth (and we paid very little for the upgrade). The longer the cruise or the more time you plan on spending in your room, the more worthwhile a verandah or oceanview room becomes.

The Disney Cruise Line ships feature rotational dining, plus adults-only fine-dining restaurants like Palo and Remy, and an assortment of quick service options so that you can grab food on the go or eat while lounging around on the main deck. Here are our quick-hit summaries of the main dining rooms on the Disney Magic–click each name for a detailed review and food photos–which are similar to the restaurants on the other Disney Cruise Line ships.

Animator’s Palate – Animator’s Palate is a restaurant that’s more like a dinner show. Besides the stage shows, this is probably the biggest dose of “Disney magic” that you’ll have aboard the Disney Cruise Line, as it features an animation-centric transformation of the restaurant via some clever Imagineering. I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s definitely not to be missed. The restaurant is supposedly “Pacific Rim,” but it more or less seemed like standard, American cuisine to us.

Lumiere’s – Lumiere’s is an American and French cuisine fusion restaurant. It combines Art Deco and Beauty and the Beast themes into a stylized restaurant that is elegant, yet full of Disney whimsy and charm. We really liked our meal at Lumiere’s and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The dining room is a bit chaotic and loud, but the food and design are both great.

Palo – This is the adults-only fine dining experience aboard the Disney Magic, with a per guest surcharge. It is soooo worth that surcharge that you should not even hesitate to make reservations here. Seriously, so many people pass on Palo because they already paid a lot for the cruise and want to take advantage of the “free” dining (really dining built into the cost of the cruise), but Palo is worth the added cost as compared to the other restaurants. Do it. You will not regret it.

Carioca’s – We skipped Carioca’s for Palo during our rotational dining, having heard that it was the least impressive restaurant on the Disney Magic. It is themed to be an outdoor marketplace set in Rio, and transforms from day to night as it changes from day to night on the ship. The name comes from Jose, the parrot from The Three Caballeros. We were in here once outside of the rotational dining, and it seemed like an interesting concept.

In addition to the rotational dining, here are the other restaurants on the Disney Magic:

  • Cabanas (Table Service)
  • Daisy’s De-Lites (Quick Service)
  • Pete’s Boiler Bites (Quick Service)
  • Pinocchio’s Pizzeria (Quick Service)

disney-cruise-line-magic-080

Drinking gets its own section because, for a lot of people, getting your buzz on is an essential part of the cruise experience. We aren’t of that mentality, but there certainly is something to be said for lounging on the top deck and having a drink or two.

The big thing to know with drinks aboard the Disney Cruise Line is that their costs vary widely. Drinks in the ‘cool’ hurricane glasses (made of plastic) at the Sail Away Party are weak Miami Vices that are expensive. There’s also a souvenir beer mug, which is also expensive. We’d avoid these both; even if you want a souvenir, put your money towards something better than a cheap plastic glass.

Drinks elsewhere on the ship are less expensive, but we were never really blown away with any of the concoctions at any spot we tried. We’ve heard of drink specials ( Disney Cruise Line Blog’s drinking page lists a few examples), but we didn’t see any. Keep your eye out for these!

after-hours-disney-magic

Nightlife aboard the Disney Cruise Line ships is…how do we put this…not all that full of life. Each ship has a few options, but in our experience, none are all that popular. Here’s what you can find aboard the Magic…

After Hours is the adults-only entertainment district, and it’s pretty cool in theory. There are three venues here: O’Gill’s Pub, Keys, and Fathoms. The main area here is Fathoms, which is used earlier in the night for hosted interactive shows like “Pops” before becoming a dance club later. O’Gill’s and Keys are variations of the same concept, with one being an Irish pub and the other being a modern piano bar.

In terms of concept and design, all three of these venues are cool. And, so long as you’re fine with your entertainment ending at around 9 or 10 pm, they are fun in practice, too. The problem is, once you get past about 10 pm, the number of adults on any given Disney Cruise Line ship looking for nightlife is minimal, and this already low number is spread across multiple venues. If you like the quiet of having a venue (more or less) to yourselves so you and friends can chat, this is a great thing. If you’re looking for an energetic scene, this is an awful thing.

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

I am somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. I hate going to dance clubs in our town because they are loud and obnoxiously crowded. Conversely, I am not keen on pubs and other places where no one else is around. At that point, why not just “party” at home? We have found that After Hours skews too close to “empty” to really do a ton for us. In fairness, one night we did see some adults who had overindulged go absolutely crazy on the dance floor…that was a lot of fun to watch!

This is something that will vary to a degree on every sailing, but one thing that appears consistent is that Disney Cruise Line attracts a disproportionate number of families as compared to other cruise lines. Parents are often too tired or have outgrown the idea of nightlife, and aren’t as likely to partake as singles. We’d hazard a guess that these nightlife spots are busier on cruises that are geared more towards adults (like an Alaska cruise or a repositioning cruise). You can still have fun with the nightlife, especially if you’re the one bringing the party (or more importantly, the people).

Family Stuff & Kid’s Clubs

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

If you are looking for family-friendly entertainment, or just a place to deposit your kids for the day, the Disney Cruise Line has you covered!

D Lounge is the main hangout for family-friendly activities. Lots of different things happen here throughout the day, from trivia to dancing to even Disney Vacation Club presentations. Kids, what’s more family-friendly than convincing your parents to buy into Disney Vacation Club? This is your future we’re talking about! 😉

The Oceaneer Club is for children age 3-12, and has numerous themed experiences that will appeal to a variety of different interests and age levels. We had a chance to tour this club, but since we don’t have kids, we have no first-hand feedback on how the experiences are. The spaces themselves sure look cool, but if anyone has feedback from their kids as to how enjoyable this stuff actually is, please share in the comments.

First, and probably the most interesting is Marvel’s Avengers Academy. There’s also Disney’s Pixie Hollow, Andy’s Room from Toy Story, and Mickey Mouse Club. Each of these areas is pretty-well themed. So, Andy’s Room actually resembles his room from Toy Story, Pixie Hollow looks like it might be inhabited by fairies, and Mickey Mouse Club has a strong Mickey Mouse motif.

The Oceaneer Lab, also for children age 3-12, is basically the activity center. The coolest thing about this, I think, as a Disney fan is that it incorporates the S.E.A. (Society of Explorers and Adventurers) concept found at Tokyo DisneySea and Hong Kong Disneyland and brings it to the Disney Magic! It has a pirate-themed area where kids can steer a pirate ship through the Caribbean, plus Captain’s Workshop, Animator’s Studio, and Craft Studio, all of which offer interactive activities.

Both locations are open from 9 am until midnight, and are connected by a kids-only hallway, so kids can utilize both spaces easily. Truthfully, I’m not sure what the distinction between the Club and Lab is, since both venues offer interactive activities. Maybe they just couldn’t fit the entire kids area into one space, and since there are two locations, they needed two names? No clue.

There’s also Edge and Quarter Masters, both of which are basically places to play video games. Vibe is the teens-only ‘club’ hangout.

The nursery aboard the Disney Magic is called ‘it’s a small world’ Nursery, and is themed to the park attraction. It’s for kids under 3, and has an additional charge. So remember, parents, babysitting is FREE for your kids over age 3, but costs extra for those under 3. Plan accordingly when determining when to book your cruise! 😉

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

Like all things Disney, the Disney Cruise Line nails themed entertainment. Currently, the Disney Magic has three Broadway-style shows “Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic,” “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story,” and “Tangled: The Musical” These shows play on Deck 4, Forward in the Walt Disney Theatre (a beautiful theater worth checking out in its own right).

One thing several people have asked us is whether it’s worth it to see the shows. Our answer is always a qualified “absolutely.” We absolutely recommend the shows because these are a big part of what puts the “Disney” into the Disney Cruise Line, and more than anything else aboard the ship, they are something you will only find on the Disney Cruise Line. Why would you skip the entertainment that’s a defining feature of the Disney Cruise Line?!

We qualify that ‘absolutely’ response because we want to make it clear that we don’t think these shows are across-the-board incredible. Each of them has its flaws, but they’re all elaborate, ambitious, and well worth watching at least once. They all have really strong production values, very talented casts, and memorable music. I would say that you will probably like 2 out of the 3 shows if you’re a serious Disney fan. You might even like them all–I suppose it depends upon how critical you are.

The big impediment you might have in seeing all of these shows is dinner. The shows each have two performances on select nights of your cruise, and these occur at 6:15 pm and 8:30 pm (check your Personal Navigator to confirm this). The idea is that if you have an early dinner seating, you go to the late show, or vice-a-versa. For adults traveling without kids, this presents no issue (perhaps unless you’re having a long meal at Palo), but for parents with kids, dinner and a show can be a bit much.

We have two potential recommendations for this: change your meal seating time (you can have it adjusted when you first board the ship) depending on whether you think dinner-first or show-first is better for your kids, or do dinner first and watch the shows from bed on your in-cabin TV. The latter suggestion is less ideal, but possibly more realistic. Obviously, you lose a lot of what makes the shows special by watching them on TV as opposed to in the theater, but if you realistically wouldn’t be able to do both dinner and the theater (and enjoy both), then that’s not really a good option.

Characters & Other Entertainment

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

It’s impossible to cover every single piece of entertainment available on the Disney Cruise Line. First of all, because there are like 20+ different things to do everyday. Second, because it changes from cruise to cruise, so we could never keep up. For this area, the Personal Navigator is your friend. Refer to the paper Personal Navigator or the iPhone app regularly, and determine what looks interesting to you on a daily basis.

The stage shows covered above are the flagship entertainment aboard the Disney Magic, and those are not to be missed. Additional entertainment consists of activities in the D Lounge (mentioned above), nightlife (also mentioned above), trivia, and other unique seminars and presentations. There’s really so many entertainment options that you could spend your entire cruise “being entertained.” Based upon what we saw, not all of the entertainment options were created equally, and others are advertisements for other Disney offerings.

There’s also recreation like basketball, shuffleboard, ping pong, soccer, and more. The Fitness Center offers weight machines and elliptical. Aerobic and yoga classes are also offered.

Of course, the pools are the most popular places for ‘fitness’ on the Disney Cruise Line, and there are three of them. One for families, one for adults, and one for kids–you can read more about these pools here . Add to that play areas and the AquaDunk, and there’s a lot to do. Our favorite pool was the family pool, although it was always crowded because it’s open to everyone.

However, it’s also in the center of everyone, and it was nice to lounge around. The AquaDunk always had a long wait in the middle of the day–I finally did it in late afternoon and only waited 10 minutes, and didn’t think it was worth even that. It seems like Disney needed something that looked like the AquaDuck water coaster on the other ships, and this was all the Disney Magic could support. It’s fine, but way too short.

Another big thing for many guests is the Buena Vista Theater. This shows first-run Disney movies, and is very popular with guests. To each their own, but we aren’t fans of taking from out of a cruise to see a movie. At home, we can see a movie for ~$15 per person, and while it might seem like a “good deal” to see movies for “free” on the Disney Cruise Line, your per hour waking cost of the cruise is probably significantly more than ~$5. Why not do things that are actually unique to the cruise? That’s just our take, though, and we understand some people might need downtime, or might just want to relax as a family and enjoy the latest Disney film.

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

Pirate Night is the ‘biggest’ entertainment aboard the Disney Magic. It starts with character meet & greets in atrium, followed by normal rotational dinner (servers and guests seem to get into the pirate mood), followed by the Pirates in the Caribbean deck/dance party, and concluding with fireworks shot over the edge of the ship.

If you have kids, this is probably great fun. We had a blast getting into the pirate mood and dressing up a bit for it, but the actual deck party was a bit of a letdown. Pirate Mickey and the other characters were fun, but the music was pretty dated and it seemed like the whole thing was way too reliant on the dance element. Kids probably won’t know the difference and will have a blast, but we would have liked to see more scripted action from the characters, or a dance party that wasn’t stuck in the past.

pirate-minnie-sarah-bricker

In terms of character meet & greets, the scheduled meet & greets in the atrium were without a doubt the most popular ones we saw. This was especially true on Pirate Night, when the characters are dressed in pirate attire. If you want to do meet & greets on Pirate Night, make sure to arrive and line-up just before the meet & greets start. Other scheduled meet & greets drew long lines, but nothing as long as this.

We actually found the shortest lines to be on Castaway Cay, where the characters (plus Jack Sparrow) generally didn’t have much in the way of lines at all. Perhaps this was because people don’t want character photos when they are in swimsuits? Maybe guests forget their cameras? Whatever the case, we think this is the best time for character photos.

We’re not really sure if it’s “entertainment” per se, but we don’t have anywhere else to put it, so…there’s a spa on the ship. It’s called Senses Spa & Salon. We contemplated doing something here for the sake of “research”…until we saw the prices. Sorry, you’ll have to do your own research on this one.

Castaway Cay

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, is the port of call that everyone going on Disney Cruise Line for a Caribbean cruise will see. We love Castaway Cay, and since there are so many tips and recommendations for this stop, we actually wrote a dedicated Castaway Cay Guide that you can reference for planning your day on Castaway Cay.

Overall, setting sail aboard the Disney Cruise Line is an incredibly enjoyable experience. Although the itineraries command premium pricing, but it’s a premium experience, too. All things considered, we feel DCL offers good value for money, Disney quality, and the ships don’t nickel and dime you like other cruise lines.

Since first setting sail with Disney Cruise Line, we’ve since done several additional itineraries, including to Norway, Alaska, and both the Eastern and Western Caribbean (multiple times). Our favorite destination by far was the Norwegian Fjords, which literally felt like a trip to Arendelle from  Frozen . Alaska was also a lot of fun, and of course we love cruising to tropical islands and enjoying Castaway Cay.

Even as Platinum Castaway Club Members, we do not consider ourselves the definitive authority on Disney Cruise Line. There are still far more itineraries that we have not done as compared to ones we have. With that said, we’re working on becoming seasoned cruise pros. If any of you experienced cruisers have additional tips or recommendations as to itineraries, excursions, or anything else, please share them. We wanted to put this guide together as a handy starting point, because we’ve been receiving a lot of questions about Disney Cruise Line.

If you want personalized recommendations for Disney Cruise Line itineraries, ships, and more, click here to get a cruise quote from a no-fee Authorized Disney Vacation Planner . If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, we’d really appreciate it if you’d share it via social media to help spread the word. We put a lot of work into making this site a helpful planning resource, and hope it’s useful to you! 🙂

Your Thoughts

Have you ever set sail on the Disney Wish, Disney Magic, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, or Disney Wonder? Do you have a favorite ship or favorite itinerary? Do you think Disney Cruise Line is worth the premium pricing? What did you think of the ships? Any other tips to add or recommendations? If you have questions or thoughts, please share them below and we’ll try to respond!

Great advice! we’re looking to book a cruise – any advice on if it’s better to book direct or recommended travel agents?

And don’t ask me why I’m saying like a lot so bye

If you could see like the hall then you would be surprised it looks so pretty. I never went on the cruise ship but like I seen it in pictures and it looks so beautiful and magical And like if you see the entire ship it’s like huge and when I saw it I thought there was like so many places that you could be in there. These are the things that Seriously say about the Disney cruise ship , 1. It’s like so fun and, 2. It’s the most Beautifullest place that I’ve ever seen , and last 3. I’m pretty sure everyone’s having fun So . Bye-bye,thx

' src=

You complain a lot

' src=

if you are a beer drinker, the beer mug package is 100% worth it, great value and way easier than hauling your own beer. the bottled beer packages are not. the mug package- you pay up front the cost of a 22oz beer and get the mug. you then can refill that 22oz mug for the price of a 16oz beer all cruise long. at the end of the evening, trade your mug in for a token/card at any bar. use that token/mug next time. the best part is at the end of your cruise, you can either take a clean mug home, or better yet, keep the token/card in a safe place to bring back on your next cruise to keep things rolling without needing to buy the package new again. also, this allows you to have any beer on tap, which is so much better than any beer bottled. they often have various seasonal offerings, even local offerings (alaska brewing co on alaska sailings, for example).

Like I will love it too I like the dining table and I like like everything I have on a Disney cruise ship it’s like so fine I don’t know what to say but this is the most best cruise ship I ever in like ever seen in my entire life is so magical if I’d be there i’d be surprised so like…thx

I’m hoping to provide color to the Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Club, since I don’t see it anywhere in the comments. We have only experienced these options on the Disney Fantasy, so I can’t speak for the other ships in the line, but I expect that its similar. Kids are issues a wrist band at the beginning of the cruise that looks just like a Magic Band. This is how they are checked in and out, and how they are tracked throughout the different areas. My three year old liked to take his on and off, and when this happened, CMs would just put it back on his wrist or around his ankle. Don’t forget to return this band at the end of the cruise, or you will be charged $12.50, and the bands don’t work a second time around or at the parks. It’s a lame souvenir.

During Registration you’ll say who is allowed to check out with your child, and a CM will confirm the first time you drop off. At pick up they will tell you when you can find your kid so you don’t have to search the whole area.

In the Oceaneer Club each of areas, Marvel, Pixie Hollow, Andy’s Room, etc, have their really creative themeing and themed activities throughout the day. There is always something going on to keep kids engaged and active – our son loved meeting Dr Strange in Marvel and practicing flying an X-Wing in the Star Wars area. If that sounds overwhelming, there are always quiet areas kids can find to chill and unwind – we often found our son in Andy’s room watching a movie or playing with Mr. Potato Head.

Oceaneer Lab had lots of fun activities aimed at different ages and developmental levels. My son loved flying an airplane. I loved that they had CM led science experiments and cooking lessons from Ratatouille. The kitchen lab is also where kids are served lunch. CMs were extra awesome in accommodating my son’s food allergies during cooking labs and meals, as we have come to expect from Disney.

How have you found cheaper rates on DCL cruises? I was under the impression that the only way to get cheaper rates is to book 1.5 years out when the prices first come out. Have you done a post on this yet?

' src=

Disney sometimes offers last-minute discounted “guaranteed” rooms which means you cannot choose your room but will be assigned one in a specific category or better. Many of these have additional restrictions–e.g must b paid in full upon booking and aren’t nonrefundable. We are currently trying this out for our first cruise in April on the theory that the room won’t matter much for just a three day cruise. The other thing to note is because it is last minute, many on board activities and port excursions will be sold out (we got some and are happy with out options, but you have to be willing to be flexible and take what isn’t available)

Sorry for all of the typos in my above response! My phone autocorrect was acting pretty weird…

I also just realized Tom has a blog post about this, so check it out here for more/better info:

https://www.disneytouristblog.com/money-saving-tips-disney-cruise-line/

' src=

Palo Dining is now a $30 fee! But we are still going to try it on your recommendation.

' src=

Hi just an update you are no longer allowed to carry liquor onto the ship. You may carry on 2 bottles of wine per person or a 6 pack of beer person but nothing else. You can however carry the wine and beer limit on at every port. I believe this new rule went into effect this past September. For some people this is not a big deal but for others was one of the draws to a Disney cruise over other cruise lines.

' src=

Good point–I’ll update this in the post!

' src=

It was a big draw for our family (all adults) and I feel it was great for adults traveling sans kids. Sad to see this change.

' src=

Do you have recommendations on when to go? Is there a season when it is typically cheaper? A month where you wouldn’t risk bad weather? We are thinking a Caribbean Cruise from the same port.

Also from Port Canaveral, the Disney Fantasy will begin the year with seven-night sailings to several favorite destinations in the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Plus, one unique eight-night sailing includes two days in beautiful Bermuda, where Guests can sunbathe on the island’s pristine pink sand beaches, enjoy exhilarating water sports or explore the island’s spectacular underground Crystal Caves.

From Miami, the Disney Dream will embark on an assortment of four- and five-night cruises to locales including Grand Cayman, Nassau, Castaway Cay and Cozumel, Mexico. Even more private island enjoyment is on deck with one special five-night cruise that includes two stops at Castaway Cay.

On all Florida departures, Guests can delight in a voyage that provides something for every member of the family, combining the adventure and relaxation of tropical destinations, the ease and indulgence of an ocean cruise, and the world-class entertainment and service of a Disney vacation.

Tropical Escapes from Texas and New Orleans In January and February, the Disney Magic will sail from Galveston, Texas, on a variety of four-, five-, six- and seven-night itineraries to the Bahamas and Western Caribbean. Tropical ports of call on these sailings include Grand Cayman as well as Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico.

In February and March, the Disney Magic is “going down the bayou” for the first time during a debut season in New Orleans. Departing from the heart of The Big Easy, along the mighty Mississippi River, the four-, five- and six-night sailings will call on the tropical destinations of Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Before or after their Disney cruise, Guests can venture into the Crescent City to savor the distinct flavors of famous New Orleans cuisine, revel in the sweet melodies of world-renowned jazz music and recognize the iconic sights and sounds that inspired the beloved animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”

All early 2023 Disney Magic voyages include two or three days at sea to enjoy the unlimited fun, entertainment, relaxation and memories onboard.

Baja Peninsula Getaways from San Diego The Disney Wonder will return to the West Coast, sailing from San Diego in April and May. Cruises to Baja, Mexico and the Mexican Riviera will transport Guests to sunny shores filled with vibrant culture, glittering sand beaches, active outdoor adventures and exciting water activities.

Sailings from San Diego will range in length from three to seven nights. Some sailings to the Baja peninsula will call on the charming coastal city of Ensenada, known for its turquoise blue water and rugged mountainous terrain. Many departures will include a visit to Cabo San Lucas, a favorite destination with dramatic rock formations and white sand beaches.

A seven-night itinerary will sail to Mazatlan, the “Pearl of the Pacific,” filled with breathtaking natural wonders, thriving culture and colorful history, and to Puerto Vallarta, the beautiful seaside escape nestled along the curve of the Banderas Bay and bordered by the stunning Sierra Madre mountains.

Cheapest Disney Cruises: Magical Voyages on a Budget

As a seasoned Disney travel writer and parent, I’ve discovered that a Disney Cruise can be an unforgettable family experience without breaking the bank. While Disney Cruise Line is known for its premium offerings, there are ways to make this magical adventure more affordable. In this comprehensive guide, I’ll share insider tips on finding the cheapest Disney cruises and maximizing your value at sea.

Book with The Vacationeer to Get Credit Toward Onboard Spending

Understanding Disney Cruise Pricing

Before we dive into specific deals, it’s crucial to understand how Disney Cruise Line (DCL) prices its voyages:

  • Prices fluctuate based on demand, season, and booking timing
  • Inside staterooms are typically the most budget-friendly option
  • Shorter cruises often have lower overall prices
  • Off-peak sailings can offer significant savings

Cheapest Disney Cruise Options

2-night cruises: the absolute cheapest disney cruise experience.

A wide-open view of the ocean, with the edge of the deck of a Disney Cruise Ship barely visible

Typically, the absolute cheapest Disney cruises are the 2-night sailings . This makes sense, as the shortest Disney cruises generally have lower overall prices.

Currently, the most affordable 2-night options are part of the “Disney Magic at Sea” cruises sailing from Australia and New Zealand ports, such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland. These cruises offer a unique blend of Disney magic and Oceanic adventure, often starting as low as $800 USD for two guests in an inside stateroom.

While these may be the cheapest Disney cruises available, their location makes them less accessible for many travelers. Transcontinental airfare will eradicate the savings for most people. However, for those in the region or looking for an extraordinary Disney adventure, these cruises offer exceptional value.

It’s important to note that Disney Cruise Line’s itineraries are always evolving, and future offerings may include short cruises sailing from U.S. ports. Always check with The Vacationeer for the latest information on upcoming itineraries and ports.

Other Affordable Disney Cruise Options

For more accessible options, consider these typically budget-friendly choices:

3-Night Cruises

These short getaways offer a taste of Disney magic at sea:

  • Bahamian Cruises from Florida ports : Often starting around $1,700 for 2 guests in an inside stateroom. These cruises frequently sail from Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral.
  • Baja Cruises from San Diego : These cruises typically start from $1,600 for 2 guests and often include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico.

4-Night Cruises

People swim in blue waters at Cozumel

Offering slightly more value than shorter options:

  • Bahamian Cruises from Port Canaveral : Usually starting around $1,850 for 2 guests in an inside stateroom. These often include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.
  • Western Caribbean Cruises from Galveston : These cruises, often starting around $1,500 for 2 guests, may include stops in Cozumel or Progreso, Mexico.

5-Night Cruises

For those who can extend their trip a bit longer:

  • Western Caribbean Cruises : Departing from ports like New Orleans, these cruises often start from about $2,500 for 2 guests.

Remember, these are general starting prices and can vary significantly based on sailing date, ship, and current promotions. Availability and pricing are always changing, so it’s best to check with The Vacationeer for the most up-to-date information on available Disney cruises for your desired travel period.

9. Use a Travel Agent

  • Agencies like The Vacationeer can alert you to the best deals and promotions

Disney Magic vs. Disney Dream- Which Disney Cruise Ship is Best?

Disney Dream vs Disney Magic

Disney Cruise Line has an impressive assortment of ships in their fleet all offering stellar levels of Disney customer service along with varying levels of entertainment, dining, and themes unique to each ship. The Disney Magic is the original Disney Cruise Line ship and just recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The Disney Dream is one of the newer ships, although not quite as new as the Disney Wish ship and upcoming sister ships, but it is much larger in size and offers different levels of amenities.

I recently sailed on both the Disney Dream and the Disney Magic which gave me good insight into the differences between the more classic, original ships vs. the newer versions and why guests might prefer one over the other.

Disney Magic Ship Offers Easy to Navigate Layout

Disney Magic is the original Disney Cruise Line ship that first set sail in 1996. It is one of the smallest out of the Disney Cruise Line ships. The benefits of a small cruise ship is how easy it is to navigate which makes the entire experience more seamless. Just because the Disney Magic is the oldest ship doesn't mean it's outdated either! The entire cruise ship has undergone a full refurbishment which introduced refreshed lounge spaces and dining options.

The theme of the Disney Magic also leans into the classic history of the ship with the staterooms being filled with classic photographs and artwork that remind guests of the Disney legacy. My stateroom had classic photographs of Walt Disney and concept art from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Many guests prefer a smaller size cruise ship as it makes it easy to navigate the ship and quickly get from place to another. Waiting in long elevator lines, something that is common on the newer ships, isn't much of a worry here since the ship is small enough to get around using the stairs.

Larger Size of the Disney Dream Offers Expanded Areas

While I did enjoy the easy to navigate size of the Disney Magic, the Disney Dream just offers great expanded areas because of its large size. The benefit of a large ship is there is just more space to offer more entertainment or increase the space of existing amenities like the salons and youth clubs.

The atrium, the main gathering space on the Disney Cruise Line ships, is much smaller on the Disney Magic when you compare it to the large, grand staircase on the Disney Dream. This was one of the first areas I noticed the smaller size. The atrium is the first impression you have of the ship when you board and I immediately clocked the smaller size of the Disney Magic when entering this room. The Disney Dream offers a far greater wow factor in their gathering space.

This was one of the most notable differences between the two ships but only because I had the experience of being on a larger ship. For first time cruisers, I don't think they would even notice that the Disney Magic is a smaller ship because at the end of the day all of these ships are extremely large!

Each Disney Cruise Ship Offers Different Entertainment

I would argue that one of the biggest factors when deciding which Disney Cruise Line ship is a fit for your family is to look at the Broadway-caliber shows that are offered. One of the things Disney Cruise Line does best is the entertainment!

Each Disney Cruise Line ship will have its own main event Broadway show that typically follows the storyline of a popular Disney animated classic. These shows often have their own unique songs added to the show and are just simply stunning. This is my favorite part of a Disney Cruise Line experience.

On the Disney Magic, their feature show is Tangled the Musical and on the Disney Dream their feature show is Beauty & the Beast. Both of these shows were simply fantastic when it came to stage effects, musical scores, and the talent of these amazing actors. It's hard for me to pick a favorite between the two because I loved them so much. But when comparing which is best, think about what movie is your favorite! If you prefer Tangled, then the Disney Magic is the place to be especially since there's also a Tangled themed restaurant onboard too . For Beauty and the Beast fans, the Disney Dream is a no brainer.

Newer Ships Offer Better Pool Recreation

All the Disney Cruise Line ships have water slides but only the newest ships, like the Disney Dream, have slides that go around the top deck of the ship like in the picture above. The AquaDuck is the Disney Dream waterslide that twists and turns all around the top of the ship. The Disney Magic has water slides but they are more simple slides that go from an upper deck down onto the main pool deck, there are no grand views of the ocean or the ship from those enclosed water slides.

This is also where the larger space of the Disney Dream shines because the pool areas are far larger and there is generally more space for seating as opposed to the Disney Magic. Since the top pool deck also acts as a gathering space for fun activities like Pirate Night and Marvel Day at Sea , this extra space makes those experiences a bit better.

Disney Magic Offers Best Themed Dining Options

Disney Magic blows the Disney Dream out of the water when it comes to themed dining experiences. This ship features Rapunzel's Royal Table which is the hit dining experience on the Disney Magic. As you enjoy a full course dinner of a “Regal Banquet” you will watch a celebration of Rapunzel's birthday and her anniversary of her return home.

The restaurant is themed to be the royal ballroom from the Tangled film filled with glowing wish lanterns and Rapunzel's drawings. This is one of my favorite Disney dining experiences, even when I compare it to the theme parks, and was a highlight of my experience on this cruise.

Animator's Palette is Superior on Disney Magic

Another win for the Disney Magic, their version of Animator's Palette tends to be a bit more superior in design although they do lack the interactive Crush talking screens that the Disney Dream version has. The Disney Dream's version offers interactive (think “Turtle Talk with Crush” from the theme parks) screens in the restaurant with Crush interacting with the guests. Kids love this and it is a fun feature.

However, the design of Animator's Palette on the Disney Magic is simply stunning with the way it pays homage to animation in such a historical and elegant way. As you dine, the colors of the restaurant and sketches being shown will transition from black and white to full color as it encompasses the history of animation. I found this restaurant's design to be a beautiful blend of Disney theme and elegance.

Youth Clubs Vary From Ship to Ship

Youth Clubs on the Disney Cruise Line ship s tend to vary in theme and size from ship to ship. If you have kids traveling with you, it might be worth researching the themes of these kids clubs before deciding on a ship.

On the Disney Magic, we noticed the youth club for school aged children had large interactive Marvel displays, Toy Story slides, and more. But on the Disney Dream, the teen aged youth club puts all the others to shame with its own private teen pool deck and outside space. You will see a lot of variation from ship to ship in some cases so often it really depends on the age of your kids. My teenage son prefers the Vibe (the teen youth club) on the Disney Dream because of the pool deck and more spacious lounge it offers. In comparison, he felt the teen club on the Magic was small and underwhelming.

Disney Dream Tends to Be Fan Favorite

After experiencing both the Disney Magic and Disney Dream, the Disney Dream just continues to win out. While I loved all the presence of Tangled on the Disney Magic, nothing could really top the size and offerings the Disney Dream provided.

The Disney Dream is a popular ship amongst many guests and many even still prefer it in comparison to the newest ship, the Disney Wish. The Disney Dream has the advantage of newness and size on its side which can make it hard to stack up against the oldest ship in the fleet, the Disney Magic.

However, the Disney Magic has underwent recent renovations and updates that you honestly might never even tell it's the first ship of the fleet. So in the end, so much of this comes down to personal preference. For me, I would personally choose the Disney Dream over the Magic in the future although I loved the Tangled references that were so present on the Disney Magic.

Helpful Tips to Add Disney World to Your Next Disney Cruise

Published: August 23, 2024

Tabatha Marks

There’s so much to love about a Disney vacation, and whether you’re setting sail with  Disney Cruise Line  or heading to  Walt Disney World Resort  for the ultimate theme park experience, you’re bound to have an amazing time.

Why not double the fun and enjoy the best of both worlds?  Port Canaveral  is just an hour away from Disney World, making it easy to adventure by land and sea – all in one trip. Here are some helpful tips to add a Disney World visit to your next Disney cruise.

Pack your best Disney fits – including a MagicBand+.

When combining a park visit with a cruise, you’ll want to pack an array of outfits, like a snazzy bathing suit, walking shoes, attire for any themed nights, comfy shorts and maybe even matching shirts for your group. My top tip for your Disney fit though is to bring along a  MagicBand+.

Your Walt Disney World Resort MagicBand+ can be used onboard all Disney Cruise Line ships, allowing you to unlock the door to your room, enter our park gates, easily make purchases and enjoy special interactive experiences – all with a quick tap.

Disney Skyliner

Stay in “vacation mode” and leave the driving to us.

Whether you’re visiting the parks pre- or post-cruise, traveling between the cruise port and our parks is a breeze. Disney can  add a transfer  to and from Port Canaveral, Walt Disney World and Orlando International Airport to your itinerary for an additional fee.

Once at Walt Disney World, you can easily zip around our parks and resorts thanks to the many fun, quick and complimentary  transportation offerings  available. My personal favorite is a ride aboard the Disney Skyliner.

Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort

Turn your cruise into a full-week trip with a Disney Resort stay.

Turn your trip into a full-week vacation by adding a few nights at a  Disney Resort  to your three- or four-night cruise on the  Disney Wish.

This gives you plenty of time to explore the parks, relax by the pool and enjoy the same legendary detail, service and storytelling of a Disney cruise at the resort of your choice.  Florida residents  can save up to 30% on rooms at select resorts for the rest of the summer and early fall.

Store your bags as soon as you arrive and hit the parks.

No matter the length of your stay at Walt Disney World, make the most of your day by starting early. If you’re staying at a Disney Resort, you get  early entry  to the parks and you can store your luggage with  Bell Services  before your room is ready. They’ll even deliver your bags to your room later in the day so you can focus on your park adventure.

Festival of the Lion King

Don’t miss out on the great entertainment options on land and sea.

One of the best parts of a Disney trip is that there’s no shortage of great entertainment options. With a land and sea vacation, you have double the opportunities to catch a spectacular Disney production – or multiple! Between live music, Broadway-caliber shows, fireworks, parades and more, there is something for everyone.

My top recommendation at Walt Disney World is “ Festival of the Lion King ,” where you can catch dancing, acrobatic hijinks and classic tunes from “The Lion King”   at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Roundup Rodeo BBQ

Sit down and dive into a delicious meal at a Disney restaurant.

If you’re a foodie like me, your vacations always revolve around what you’re going to eat. I especially love to grab a meal at a sit-down restaurant, trying new ones on every trip. Disney has some of the best restaurants out there, like themed, rotational dining included in your cruise fare, and adult favorites like  Palo  and  Remy  on the high seas.

There are many incredible options at Walt Disney World too – including immersive picks that put you inside  Beast’s enchanted castle , a  Harambe marketplace , along  Sunset Boulevard  and even  amongst toys  in Andy’s Backyard. Use the  My Disney Experience  app to view dining availability at any given Disney World restaurant for multiple days at a time in one single search.

A family poses for a picture with Moana

Take lots of pictures – including with your favorite Disney pals.

Photos are a great way to turn special moments into timeless memories, but sometimes it’s too easy to forget to snap a picture when you’re on the go and having a blast. This is your reminder to take lots of pictures on your next trip – including with your favorite pals.

There are tons of opportunities to meet many different Disney characters on a land and sea vacation, and if you want to stay focused on the fun, we’ll handle the photos. With  Disney PhotoPass Service  at Walt Disney World and  professional photo packages  on Disney Cruise Line sailings, we’ll capture every hug, high-five and smile for you.

Ready to set sail for the ultimate Disney vacation? Combine high-seas adventure with theme park magic by  booking a Disney cruise  and  a visit to Walt Disney World . These tips above can help you get the best of both worlds on your next trip. Bon voyage and “sea” you real soon!

I am on this ship. We are very disappointed about the late sailing and changes. We were in Progreso last week and there is nothing to do. I have contacted Disney. Can’t get them to respond. My big question is if sail off is 8:30 will there be a sail away party. What happens if my dinner is at 8:15. Do we have to miss dinner? Any one know

Only DCL can provide the details specific to this sailing. The events would be scheduled by the onboard team, not shoreside.

Fish extenders: How to gift more magic on your next Disney cruise

Megan duBois

Looking for a way to make your next Disney cruise even more magical? Cruisers in the know join a fish extender exchange group to add a bit of pixie dust to their vacation at sea.

What are fish extenders? No, they're not related to Nemo or Dory. They are actually a key accessory in a Secret Santa-style activity popular on Disney cruises that can be fun for the whole family. Here's everything you need to know about fish extenders and how to use them.

For more cruise reviews, guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What are fish extenders?

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

If you've ever been on a Disney cruise, you might have noticed that some passengers hang pocket organizers adjacent to their cabin doors. These are called fish extenders, named after the metal fish emblem (or other sea animal) located outside your cabin door (often above your cabin number). The emblem acts as a mailbox for excursion tickets, dining reminders and an envelope with your keycards on the first day of your cruise. It's also where cruisers hang their fish extenders.

What's the purpose of these hanging organizers? It's to allow fellow passengers to leave little gifts and trinkets for the people in your cabin as part of a Secret Santa-type of activity. Disney Cruise Line does not coordinate these fish extender exchanges; they're organized independently by cruisers on each sailing.

You will see a wide variety of fish extenders on a Disney cruise. The most popular fish extender styles are reusable canvas shopping bags or custom tiered pouches that are similar to door organizers.

How do you connect with people to participate in a gift exchange?

The two most popular places to find fish extender groups are on community cruise boards and through Facebook.

No matter which option you choose, you'll first want to find the cruise you're going on by searching for your ship and dates. For example, you might search "Disney Dream, Aug. 12-19, 2025," and if a group already exists, ask to join.

Within the groups (sometimes called roll calls), smaller groups can be created for fish extender exchanges. These can be based on a variety of themes, including family exchanges, adult exchanges, or even the type of gift you want to exchange, like magnets or holiday ornaments. Depending on what type of gift exchange you want to participate in, you can register for one or more of the smaller groups. The groups are usually listed out by a group manager so you can see what your options are before committing to a themed group.

After you decide what type of fish extender group you want to be part of, the group's organizer will add you to the list. You might also be asked to fill out a brief survey about yourself and your cabin mates — your likes, favorite Disney characters, favorite holidays, etc.

The larger group is then divided into smaller, more manageable groups so no one family has to buy too much. Before your cruise, you'll get a short list of cabins for your gift list. If you completed a survey for the fish extender group, you'll also get the same information about your assigned fish extender group mates.

Where to get fish extenders

Depending on the type of fish extender you want (a bag or a tiered pouch), you can buy or make one. If you want to buy your fish extender, Etsy and Amazon offer many cute options.

Additionally, YouTube offers plenty of tutorials on how to make a fish extender. Some require basic sewing knowledge, while others are no-sew tutorials. Just find the video that looks the easiest to you, get everything you need from the craft store and get to work.

What are the best gifts for a fish extender?

Disney fish extender gift ideas are almost endless. If you're crafty, consider homemade gifts like magnets, ornaments and key chains. Those who prefer to buy gifts can purchase glow sticks, small toys, cups and tote bags. Pro tip: Give gifts you would want to receive.

Need inspiration for fish extender gifts? Head to YouTube or TikTok for fish extender hauls or search gift ideas on Etsy. When it's time to shop, online stores like Amazon and Etsy are great spots. I also like to find little trinkets for kids at the dollar section in Target, craft stores or an "everything is a dollar" type of store.

Make sure your suitcase is big enough to fit the gifts you plan to take (and the ones you'll receive during your cruise). I've seen fish extenders overflowing with treasures, which is great. However, gifts may be hard to pack if you don't leave enough room in your suitcase.

The general rule for a fish extender exchange is to give one time to each person in your assigned cabin group during the cruise. So if you have five cabins and four people per cabin, you'll have 20 individual gifts that you'll need to give out. Most people deliver all of the gifts for one cabin at a time.

What type of budget should you anticipate with fish extender gifts?

Your budget will depend on the type of group you join. Some fish extender groups will provide a dollar amount per person. Other groups let each person decide how much they want to spend. I like to keep each gift between $10 and $15, especially when I'm buying for several people.

The number of people in your assigned cabin group will depend on the cabin limits set by the organizer, but the average group is five to 10 rooms. Just know that cabins usually house one to five guests, which can make your fish extender budget blow up quickly.

If you have a fish extender group that has six cabins with four people each, you're buying for 24 people. That multiplied by $10 per gift per person makes your budget $240.

How to use your fish extender

disney magic cruise itinerary 2023

Once you board the ship, the real fun of the fish extender gift exchange begins.

Hang your fish extender as early as possible on the first day. Consider packing your extender in your carry-on bag so you can hang it shortly after the cabins are ready. Most people hang their fish extenders from the metal animal that displays the cabin number, but I've also seen people hang fish extenders on their cabin doors with metal magnetic hooks.

When do you deliver fish extender gifts?

Typically, no particular time is set for delivering fish extender gifts, but you'll want to deliver each gift for the same cabin at the same time. If you have 10 different cabins to deliver to, it might take a while to get to everyone. You don't want to have to double back to a cabin you've already visited.

You should distribute all of your gifts before dinner on the last night. This isn't a hard rule, but many passengers pack shortly after dinner so crew members can collect the bags the night before disembarkation. No one wants to figure out how to fit gifts in a carry-on bag that's likely already full of last-minute items like pajamas and toiletries.

Where do you put the gifts you've received?

Check your fish extender each day so you can store any gifts you've received inside your cabin. This prevents any unwanted swiping and allows you to see and enjoy what you've been given. Create a dedicated space in the cabin for your gifts — a small carry-on suitcase that can be easily accessed or an unused drawer or shelf.

Are fish extender gift exchanges and pixie dusting the same thing?

One topic that comes up a lot in Disney Cruise Line groups is the difference between fish extenders and "pixie dusting." Fish extenders are part of organized gift exchanges. Pixie dusting is giving or receiving a gift not organized by a group. Receiving pixie dust gifts is purely a surprise, and you are not expected to give a gift in exchange.

Some people still put out bags or fish extender pouches for pixie dusting gifts, even if they are not participating in a fish extender exchange.

In the past, I've taken little trinkets onto the ship with me to give as pixie dust gifts. On a recent sailing, I enjoyed giving out friendship bracelets with Disney sayings on them. I've also pixie dusted with Halloween-themed gift bags filled with pencils, spider rings and ghost erasers for a "Halloween on the High Seas" itinerary.

Bottom line

Joining a fish extender group and participating in the gift exchanges that go with it can be a great way to add a bit more fun to your Disney cruise. However, it can be a big time and money commitment. You can purchase or make fish extender gifts, but you should follow the rules of the group that you've joined. If you're on a budget but still want to give gifts, consider pixie dusting gifts instead. Either way you go, sharing gifts with others is a fun way to add a bit of magic to your cruise.
