Through hands-on problem solving and encounters with women role models in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), AAUW Tech Trek helps girls see their futures while having nonstop fun. This one-week summer camp is backed by AAUW’s  research and designed to make STEM fields exciting and accessible to girls in middle school — the age when girls’ participation in these fields statistically drops. For many girls, the week long camp sparks their curiosity and places them on a path toward success.

AAUW of California member Marie Wolbach founded Tech Trek in 1998 with the help of an  AAUW Community Action Grant . Today AAUW Tech Trek operates at 22 different sites around the nation. A 2013 survey of AAUW Tech Trek alumnae from California demonstrates the program’s lasting effects on many levels, including interest and confidence in STEM fields, decision to pursue those fields, and future career plans.

AAUW Tech Trek alumnae surpass the national average in most advanced math and science courses:

Tech trek 2019.

Tech Trek is a week-long residential camp at Stockton University for 8 th  grade girls who are interested in the STEM fields.  In previous years campers participated in numerous hands-on experiences including coding, developing lip gloss, and using a 3D Printer.  The meeting with professional women who are employed in the STEM field was a highlight of the week.

The selection process for this year’s camp included a nomination by a teacher, a completed application, and an interview.  The camp accepted 60 girls throughout the state. For the 2019 camp CCAAUW selected representatives from the following schools: Lindenwold Middle School, Pennsauken Middle School, Environmental Community Opportunity Charter School, Gibbsboro School, and Ann Mullen Middle School.  Congratulations campers!

For additional information please check the NJ AAUW Tech Trek site or contact CCAAUW member Becky Strickland.

Volunteers Needed!

Tech Trek needs volunteers!  Consider helping for a day or the week.  If you have a few hours, then consider helping stuff backpacks for the camp before camp opens.  Are you available for a day?  You could assist with the orientation, check-in, or check out procedures.  If you prefer to interact with the girls, you could assist with the workshops during camp.  Volunteers are welcome for the entire week.  View the Tech Trek NJ volunteer page for details.

Is Tech Trek right for my daughter?

Tech Trek is an exciting and engaging one-week summer camp for girls featuring hands-on science and technology classes, a fun and educational field trip, opportunities to meet inspiring women role models, and a unique college campus experience. To attend, families need only pay a $50 registration fee.

Your daughter is a good fit for Tech Trek if she is currently in the 7 th grade and interested in math and science with the potential to excel. Tech Trek is looking for girls who have not had the opportunity for experiences like Tech Trek before, but are excited by the opportunity to try something new, learn new things, and challenge herself. The ideal Tech Trek camper cooperates with teachers, shows respect for other students, regularly participates in class discussions, and makes positive choices for herself in and out of class. To apply, girls must be nominated by their science or math teacher.

  • “My camp experience made myself a lot more confident about pursuing a STEM career, and it made me realize that there are a lot of other girls out there who are interested in STEM careers too. It made me more confident that I could get a career in STEM.”
  • “My experience at Tech Trek was really fun. I got to connect with girls my age with similar interest at me and learn about different sciences and math I get a career in. I’ve learned about a lot of different things and careers like oceanology and astronomy, which I now have an interest in thanks to the people who came and talked to us about it.”

Tech Trek Really Works!

We surveyed girls who attended Tech Trek in California several years after they attended Tech Trek. The results speak for themselves :

  • 82% of girls chose to take more science classes in high school because of Tech Trek
  • 91% of girls reported that Tech Trek boosted their self-confidence in their ability to be successful in science classes

Girls Branch Out at Stockton Tech Trek STEM Camp

TechTrek 2017

Campers set off bottle rockets at the third annual Tech Trek at Stockton University

Galloway, N.J. _ The girls were ready. The rockets they built were ready. The bottle rocket launcher was not ready.

Girls in the annual Tech Trek camp at Stockton University huddled with instructors in the Athletic Center parking lot, trying to figure out why their bottle rocket launcher would not work.

“We are having a true scientific moment,” said Claudine Keenan, Dean of Stockton University’s School of Education and a coordinator of the annual Tech Trek camp for middle school girls, which focuses on STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

This is the third year Stockton has hosted the camp in cooperation with the American Association of University Women, or AAUW. Sixty-two rising eighth grade girls from throughout New Jersey spent a week living on the Stockton campus, learning about STEM fields, and meeting other girls with similar interests.

“It makes you feel like you’re not alone,” said Megan Gonzalez, 13, of Somerville, who wants to be an aerospace engineer, an interest not many girls in her school share, she said.

She especially enjoyed the field trip to the William J. Hughes FAA Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township, where campers  met with female scientists, got a tour, and even tried the flight simulator.

“It was awesome,” said an excited Olivia Lucier, 13, of West Berlin of the flight simulator. “Especially trying to land.”

Instructors and volunteers at the camp are also women, including Nephthaly Jean-Charles, 21, of Hamilton, a recent Stockton graduate who is now a microbiologist at a chocolate factory.

Stacy Trimble, a middle school science teacher in Hazlet, N.J. and a dorm mom at camp, recommended one of her students, Medha Dabral for Tech Trek.

“I want them to become empowered with the possibilities, and rise to challenges,” said Trimble who also takes some of the camp ideas back to her classroom. “It’s hands-on learning.”

That hands-on learning led to the dismantling of the rocket launcher and the discovery of a defect that got fixed with superglue.

“Having something not work is okay,” Trimble said. “You learn a lot from things that don’t work. You find out why and make changes. That’s science.”

Campers chose from a variety of workshops, including water testing and conservation, cyber security, and music coding.

Tech Trek doesn’t end when the girls leave Stockton. Meghan Hooper-Jackson , a teacher in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, worked with campers to build rain barrels they take home for a community service project funded by a grant from American Water.

Other camp sponsors included Symantec and Arconic. The camp also accepts donations through an online elevate account:  https://elevate.stockton.edu/project/6113/updates/1
