Narasimha Parvatha trek Permission

To trek on Narasimha Parvatha, obtaining permission is necessary as the trek is situated in the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary of Kudremukh National Park. The forest check post near Mallandur is the place to take permission if you’re trekking from that route. Similarly, the forest check post near the base at Kigga is where you can get permission if you’re trekking from there. The entry fee is Rs. 500 per person for both routes.

As the area is inhabited by wild animals, camping is not permitted anywhere on the trek. When trekking from Mallandur, it is mandatory to be accompanied by a guide. Trek to Narasimha Parvatha and Barkana Waterfalls | Agumbe

Narasimha Parvatha – being called the “The Cherrapunji of the South India” because of its biodiversity and thick rainforest Augmbe hosts the magnificent beauty of nature. Narasimha Parvatha forest region (Agumbe forest region) is shared by 3 districts Dakshina Kannada , Chikkamagalur and Shivamogga of Karnataka. Barkana waterfalls top view during the trek is the cherry on the cake. Being covered by Western ghats and many water streams in between the Narasimha Parvatha trek is the best weekend escape.

7 – 9 Hrs

A deep forest with no definite trails, Slippery and rocky steeps, waterfalls.

3772 ft / 1150 Mts

October to February

Required. Need to get it from the forest officer.

A local trek guide is a must.

Trek Base : Malandur (Agumbe side) / Kigga (Sringeri side)

Treck to Narasimha Parvatha from Malandur

narasimha-parvatha-map

Malandur is a small village, 6kms away from Agumbe. Here local trek guides host the guests and provide a place for our morning chores, serve breakfast and pack lunch for the trek. The guide who hosted us also got us the permission from forest officer. Trek to Narasimha Parvatha peak is around 13kms from Malandur, it is better to start early around 8 AM. The Forest region starts after 1km from starting point of the trek and you will enter a deep forest region with small water streams side by (post-monsoon).

narasimha-parvatha-trail

If you are lucky you will witness footprints of elephants, bears and deers. Forest has many ascends and descends with slippery trails or no trails make sure to have good shoes. Here leeches are common so keep a first aid kit. Around 4-5kms into the forest, you will witness the Sita river flowing as Barkana waterfalls. This is the first pit stop where you can spend some time watching the beauty of waterfalls from the top, But beware do not step into the water at the edge of waterfalls or try to risk your life for photos/videos.

barkana-waterfalls

From here forest gets thicker covered with huge trees and bushes. You will reach a big rock where you can rest and have lunch after 3-4kms from Barkana waterfalls. From this point, the Narasimha Partatha peak is approximately 4kms away. Soon you will enter grasslands and the surface is flat and descending. The last 1.5kms is again ascending trail but you can see a definite trail here. Once you reach the peak of Narasimha Parvatha there is big on top which there are footprints of lord Narasimha and just beside that, there is rock Lord Narasimha idol natural emersion and another rock with Lord Ganesh natural emersion. It was said that there will be pooja performed once a year at the peak. From the peak, you can see the peak of Kuduremukh peak and there is a scenic view surrounding the Narasimha Parvatha.

narasimha-parvatha

Once you are emersed in the beauty of Narasimha Parvatha and you are energized to descent. Start moving towards the Kigga route, the path is fully covered with rocks and you need to have shoes tied tightly otherwise either you end with ankle twists or torn shoes 😉 Descent to Kigga is around 6-7kms and it is better if you take fewer breaks in between. There is a definite trail that can be seen and following that you will reach the road to a place called “ Rushya Shrugeshwara Temple ” in the Kigga. Here the trek ends. You can catch local autos to Sringeri or Agumbe. The total trek distance would be 21kms and you will have a serene experience of the Agumbe reserve forest for sure.

narasimha-parvatha-hill

Trek to Narasimha Parvatha from Kigga

We can also trek to Narasimha Parvatha from Kigga a place 6kms away from Sringeri. The trail is fully covered with rocks as said earlier section. But there is a definite trail that you can follow and reach the Narasimha Parvatha. You might not need a guide if you start from here but forest officer permission is a must. The trek will start from “Rushya Shrugeshwara Temple” and will take 3-4 Hrs to reach the peak. The trail is really steep and covered with tall trees at the beginning. The latter part is grassland and is mostly flat. If you start from Kigga you need to descend towards Kigga only. My recommendation would be that you start the trek from Malandur and get emersed in the beauty of the Agumbe reserve forest and Narasimha Parvatha.

  • Narsimha Parvatha: A trek to Agumbes Peak

Corona had impacted everyone all around the world, and this was around the month of January, the time when things were getting better. At least we were hoping to get things better. Suddenly on a Friday night, I get a call from one of my friends asking me if I'd be interested for Narasimha Parvatha trek tomorrow. Narasimha Parvatha , also called as Agumbe peak is the tallest peak in the Agumbe range, around 3800ft above sea level. There are 2 ways to trek to the top, one from the Kigga , and one more from Malandur . Distance wise, its around 8kms from Kigga whereas 12-14kms from Malandur . We thought of starting from Kigga , near Sringeri , 2.5 hours from my home. Without giving much thought I agreed.

narasimha parvatha trek blog

It was after long that I had been to a trek, and it felt good. Though  the time wasn't so convenient for trek, but we were covered by dense forest through the start. The trek to top is around 8km, and usually takes around 3-4 hours. The first quarter was quiet easy, going through forest, with well marked path all around. The second quarter too wasn't tough. Though the temperature was increasing slowly.

narasimha parvatha trek blog

At around the mid point, we came across a big rock, where we took rest for few minutes to start off again. The next phase of our walk was all in the open. We had just covered half the distance, with another half still remaining. This walk was through steep hills, with not much of cover, nor shade. Finally we reached near the top part of the hill. On top of the hill, there's a storage house, indicating that people used to stay here before, or may be it was a part of guest house. Still climbing further, we reach the peak of top, providing a 360 degree view of the entire hill landscape.

narasimha parvatha trek blog

Narsimha Parvatha has a mythological as well historical reference too. On top of the hill, there's a small idol of God, which will be worshipped first, during the annual Shringeri Jatre .

After spending some time here, and having our packed lunch, we decided to head back. Though there are multiple ways to reach the top, we decided to head back the same way. Getting down was quiet faster than climbing up. We were of course being pulled down by gravity, reaching back near the parking by around 1.

We were all quiet thirsty as all the water we had had got over by now. After having a small refreshment, we all headed back home, calling off for the day. Other than the trek, there are also few more places like Sri Rishya Shringeshwara temple , couple of falls, etc  near Kigga .

Overall Narsimha Parvatha trek is a beautiful place to go by. The trek level is moderate, with enough shade almost more than half the way. Also, please note that one has to get prior permission from forest officials, before trekking to top. This trek provides a splendid view, especially more when visiting  post monsoon.

After forest trek difficulty is moderate.

Trekking from Sringeri side is Moderate, From trek start point till peak you required to trek inside forest for initial 1KMS from Kigga temple till forest is very easy. Actual trek starts from this point. Next 2KMS you required to trek inside forest. Next Water source is near to Peak (200mts from old house)

From Kigga side: Difficult to get water on the way(after December). Only water source this side is near to Peak (200mts from old house)

Barkana Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in India. They are located in the Shivamogga district, about 98 km north of Mangaluru and 357 km north of Bengaluru. The nearest major railway station is Udupi, which is about 94 km away. This town is also home to two temples: the Gopala Krishna Temple and the Sringeri Sharadamba Temple.

The journey to the waterfall includes an eight-kilometer trek through dense forests and windy grasslands. During the trek, you will get to view the Barkana Falls from its snout. This waterfall is situated near the Rishyashringa temple in Kinga.

Once you reach Agumbe, you can visit the Sirimane Falls and Barkana Falls en route. This is one of the best destinations for trekking in Karnataka. If you’re interested in mountaineering, you can reach Agumbe via Sringeri, Agumbe, or Udupi. This trekking destination is located at a high elevation of 3780 feet, and it’s considered one of the state’s moderate to difficult treks.

Agumbe Ghat 05

While trekking through Agumbe, you can also hike to the Narasimha Parvatha peak. This peak is the tallest in the Agumbe Ghats at 826 meters. To reach the peak, you must hike through thick forests and Western Ghats trees. The peaks of the peak are covered in grazing fields, while the slopes are covered in thick forests.

Agumbe is a high-altitude village in Karnataka. The area is known as the Cherrapunji of the South, and it is home to many medicinal plants and a Rainforest Research Station. This region is also one of the rainiest areas in India, with the highest waterfall at 3800 feet.

While trekking the Agumbe Narasimha Parvatha, it is recommended that you bring enough money with you. The road is difficult and not signposted, so you’ll need a guide. A pay bottle and purification tablets are essential. The nearest health care facilities are in Mallandur and Kinga.

Places to visit in Agumbe

Agumbe is home to the highest peak in the region, the 3,772 ft-high Narasimha Parvatha. To reach the peak, you will need to trek through the dense forests and lush green grasslands of the Western Ghats. The hike is moderate and takes about four to five hours. You will also find a few waterfalls and several ghats in the area.

Agumbe is surrounded by the Western Ghats mountains, which contribute to the picturesque scenery. There are also many waterfalls in this area, including the 800-meter-high Jogigundi waterfall. Other waterfalls include Koodlu Theerthra, located 25 km away, and Slimane waterfall, which is forty kilometers away.

The best time to visit Agumbe is during the summer months. The weather is hot and dry during the day but cools down significantly during the monsoon months. Agumbe is renowned for its waterfalls and western ghats, but you may also want to consider a sunset dip in the Arabian Sea.

Visitors to Agumbe should bring appropriate rain gear and insect repellent. The area is prone to leech attacks and tourists should wear anti-leech socks to help protect themselves. If you’re visiting Agumbe during the monsoon season, you can also enjoy rafting down the Sitanadi river. However, it’s advisable to visit the city from October to February because the temperature drops to 18 deg C in winter.

If you have time and energy, you can explore the enchanting nature of Agumbe with the help of a local guide. You can take a picnic at the famous Jogi Gundi, which is just four km from Agumbe on the way to Barkana Falls. It is a deep jungle area where the 25-foot-high Malaprahaari falls. Jogi Gundi gets its name from a saint named Jogi, who used to meditate in the cave near the falls. The hike to this waterfall takes approximately 15 minutes from the town. During the monsoon, the waterfall is most beautiful and serene.

The rainforest in Agumbe is home to endangered species like the lion-tailed macaque, tiger, leopard, and dhole wild dogs. Some many reptiles and amphibians live in the area.

Narasimha Parvatha Rainforest Trek

  • Group Size: 8 - 12

Narsimha-Parvatha-Trek-Image-Muddie-Trails

Hello Explorers!

Nestled in the heart of the Agumbe rainforest is the majestic peak of  Narasimha Parvatha . The interesting thing about this mountain is the trek path that goes through a rainforest with contrasting shades like grasslands, thick sholas where sunlight doesn’t reach the ground, multiple streams. It’s a  challenging trek  that takes about 6 hours to climb.

The initial trek starts in a  dense jungle  with a gradual ascent. We will encounter plenty of  streams with fresh water . A 2 and half hour hike will get us close to the top of  Barkana waterfalls . The brute force of this waterfall formed by the huge plunge of  Sita river  into a deep valley amidst  thick forest  makes it an experience to  cherish for trekkers . We can take a brief rest here, put chilled mountain water on our face to get reenergized.

It takes another 3 hours to reach the summit from Barkana waterfalls. We need to hike through the dense forest which is full of gigantic trees standing tall between the sun and ground. A steep ascent starts from here and the route from here till we reach the grasslands is a bit difficult.

The forest finally gives way to sprawling grasslands as we move  closer to the peak . The lush green meadows are a welcome change to the thick forest due to the cool winds caressing our cheeks. The peak is around an hour and a half from the start of the grasslands. The views from the summit of  Narasimha Parvatha  are unmatchable because of its ideal location in the heart of rain forest surrounded by many mountain ranges.

Once we have our lunch, we will relax a bit and soak some sun. It just takes around 2 hours to descend 6 Km from the top in another route. It’s basically a  circuit trek  (we do not need to trek back on the same route). Bearing the initial part of the descent, most of the trek route towards the base is easy.

Narasimha Parvatha  is a precious pearl of a mountain in the  Western Ghats of Karnataka  where there’s plenty of wildlife with a high chance of bumping into trekkers. As a result, this trek is highly protected by the Forest department and is open only for 2 to 3 months of a year ( October to December ) which makes it even more precious. A forest guide is mandatory too.

The striking Kudremukh range is also noticeable from the top of Narasimha Parvatha. Don’t miss this  wonderful trek  in the small little window this year. Dream big to summit an amazing mountain that is Narasimha Parvatha that is not on the radar of many hikers.
