Cruise from Stavanger to Lysefjord

Our electric boat sails from downtown Stavanger to Lysefjord and Preikestolen all year. The 3–3 . 5 – hour Lysefjord cruise is filled with fun for young and old. In Fantahålå  (Vagabond’s Cave) you see where the “vagrants” hid from the sheriff in the old days. With luck, we might even see the occasional seal sunbathing on a rock. Not long after, we can spot the spectacular Preikestolen above the fjord , where Tom Cruise climbed the sheer mountain face in the movie Mission Impossible 6. Then we continue to the towering  Hengjanefossen waterfall, where the crew brings the bow as close as possi ble to the falls. When spring comes to the region, we also stop to feed our goats at summer pasture in Lysefjord. They love our visits! The crew tosses carrots and other treats to them.

Comfortable fjord experience with our modern and electric boat

Our modern boats have sundecks, spacious cabins and kiosk and glide through the fjords almost in silence. On most of the departures you’ll travel with our electric boat, MS Rygerelektra. The kiosk offers fresh and tempting baked goods from our local bakery, snacks and cold/hot drinks.

Boat change may occur.

Rødne aims to run the most environmentally friendly operations possible for our fjord cruise tourism, and to give our guests from all over the world a sustainable fjord experience  of the highest quality.

Choosing your cruise

There are several options for Lysefjord cruises, from short sightseeing tours to longer excursions that include activities such as hiking and kayaking:

  • Best time to go: The best time to cruise the Lysefjord is from late spring to early fall when the weather is most favorable.
  • What to bring: Dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly. Don't forget your camera, binoculars for wildlife viewing, and snacks for the trip.
  • Book your cruise: It's a good idea to book your cruise in advance, especially during peak season, to secure your spot.

Tips for a great cruise experience

  • Arrive early: Arrive at the pier early to ensure a good spot on the deck for the best views and photo opportunities.
  • Listen to the guide: Most cruises offer guided commentary that enriches the experience with historical facts and local legends.

Lysefjord Cruise & Pulpit Rock Hike (& How to Do It in One Day)

Visiting Stavanger in Norway and wondering how to do a Lysefjord cruise and Pulpit Rock hike in one day? This article is for you!

Most people come to Stavanger for two reasons – to see the famous Lysefjord and to do one of the most iconic hikes of Norway – Preikestolen , or the Pulpit Rock .

When I first started planning our 2-week Norway trip , however, I thought that you need two days in order to do both – the Lysefjord cruise and the Pulpit Rock hike .

Every guidebook, every website seemed to suggest that Lysefjord cruise and Pulpit Rock require two separate trips on two separate days. Luckily, we found a combination tour of the Lysefjord Cruise and Pulpit Rock hike that allowed us to do both in one day.

TIP: If you have no time to read about our experience, you can find more information and book this day trip on Viator or directly with Rodne Fjord Cruise .

Rodne fjord cruise in Stavanger offers the best way to visit Lysefjord and do the Pulpit Rock hike in one day

If you have more time in Stavanger, you can, of course, make these two trips separately. However, there is so much more to see and do in this beautiful region.

If you can save some time (and money) by combining these two trips in one day, it leaves you more time to explore the amazing museums in Stavanger ( the Norwegian Canning Museum is a must!) or do some more hiking in the area (we highly recommend Florli 4444 ).

Stavanger is a perfect base for hiking and outdoor enthusiasts, so if you love nature, plan at least 3-4 nights in town. Here you can find some more ideas for the best things to do in Stavanger .

Lysefjord Cruise & Pulpit Rock Hike

Traveling around the Stavanger region might seem a bit overwhelming at first. But you don’t have to worry about any practicalities if you book this combination trip (Lysefjord cruise and Pulpit Rock hike), because everything is extremely well organized and explained.

Below you can read about our experience with doing the Lysefjord cruise and Pulpit Rock hike in one day, as a day trip from Stavanger. Find out!

Lysefjord Cruise

At 10 AM we took a boat from Skagenkaien – it’s located at the main harbor in Stavanger city center. We spent a bit more than two hours on the water sailing deep into the Lysefjord, passing some beautiful islands and idyllically located colorful houses that are so typical for Norway.

The boat is big and comfortable, it has all the facilities and a beautiful indoor setting area with huge windows on all sides, or you can choose to stand on one of the decks outside.

On the morning we visited, we had the worst weather: it was cold, it was raining, and the wind was literally blowing you off the deck, so it was difficult to stay outside all the time.

Beautiful coastline scenery of Lysefjord near Stavanger in Norway

Luckily, the fjord was incredibly beautiful even in the rain. We spent as much time as we could outside. And yes, we needed really warm and waterproof clothing to actually be able to enjoy it.

What makes this Lysefjord cruise trip great is that the boat slows down at the most beautiful places and gives you lots of explanation about everything you see along the way. The commentary is available in several languages.

There were lots of people on board on the day of our visit, but it never felt crowded.

Transfer to the Pulpit Rock Trailhead

After a 2-hr Lysefjord cruise, around noon, our boat made a short stop in the tiny harbor of Oanes to drop off the passengers with the combination ticket for the hike.

Only a handful of people left the boat together with us. There was a bus waiting for us at the harbor, and 20 minutes later we were at the Pulpit Rock trailhead.

Good to know: Please note that at the moment, the boat stops at Forsand and not in Oanes as it did in the past. But the rest is the same – you take the bus from there to the Pulpit Rock trailhead. The company has a bus waiting for you when the boat arrives – it’s all very well organized.

As I said, it was raining in the morning, but the weather forecast for Preikestolen showed dry weather in the afternoon. So instead of continuing straight to the Pulpit Rock, we decided to have a relaxing lunch first and wait for the rain to stop. And it did!

There is a lodge with a restaurant at the Pulpit Rock trailhead. You can get a snack or a warm meal here, use a bathroom, refill your water bottles, or just warm up on a rainy day.

Note that food is very expensive here. So if you want to save time and money, you better pack a picnic and some snacks. The prices in Norway are very high, especially in the rural areas.

Pulpit Rock Hike

The hike to Pulpit Rock is about 4km and 2 hours each way (so 8km, 3-4 hours in total) . Some experienced hikers will say it’s an easy hike, but for us regular folks it definitely isn’t.

It’s a moderate hike with several steep climbs along the way, and you definitely need proper hiking shoes for Preikestolen. In dry weather, you might be ok in sneakers, but when it’s wet (and it usually is), you will need sturdy walking shoes with a good grip. The reviews from other travelers show that most people underestimate this hike.

The Pulpit Rock hike is not just about the Preikestolen itself. The scenery along the way is beautiful. And once you get to the top you will be rewarded by the most spectacular view over Lysefjord! We were extremely lucky that it stopped raining and there was no mist, so we could enjoy the view to the fullest.

Scenery along the way to the Pulpit Rock

After a bit less than 2 hours we reached the Pulpit Rock. It was just as spectacular as I had imagined!

Also, it was a bit intimidating! The sheer drop of this 604-meter rock is dizzying to say the least. You better don’t look straight down when you stand on the edge. And please don’t do any stupid things and stay safe!

The hike back down took us about 1h30.

You can find more detailed information about this hike in our guide via the link below.

Bus from Pulpit Rock to Stavanger

When we visited, the trip back to Stavanger involved a bus followed by a ferry. However, after the opening of the new sub-sea tunnel, the trip back to Stavanger can now be done with a direct bus.

When we traveled, the ticket price for the bus was included in the Rodne Pulpit Rock cruise & hike combination ticket. From what I see, it’s the case now as well.

The bus picks you up after the hike, at around 6 PM, and you’re back in Stavanger at around 7 PM. That’s at least an hour faster than the bus + ferry combo in the past.

To reach the Pulpit Rock trailhead - take a ferry from Stavanger to Tau followed by a bus to the Preikestolen Mountain Lodge

Practical Information for Lysefjord Cruise and Pulpit Rock Hike

  • There are daily departures with Rodne boats from Stavanger, from May till September, at 10 AM. In July and August, they sometimes offer additional trips as well.
  • Plan the whole day for the Lysefjord cruise and the Preikestolen hike. In summer (May – September), you’ll leave Stavanger at around 10 AM and be back at around 7 PM. In winter, you should do the hike with a guide!
  • Lysefjord cruise can be done by anyone, but the Pulpit Rock hike requires good physical condition. That being said, our kids of 6-8 years old could easily do the hike.
  • Dress in layers and carry a rain jacket. Wear good hiking shoes. Pack a picnic and carry plenty of drinking water. You can refill your bottles at Preikestolen Base Camp.
  • For more practical information about the exact trip, please check the Rodne Fjord Cruise website .

Hi, we are going to Stavenger October 13. Can we still hiking to pulpit rock. the tour "pulpit rock and hike in style" date stop on September 30th. Rodne fjord cruise still available in October

@Jurga, Thank you. I think it is make senses that the day become shorter and we cannot do 2 in 1 anymore.

Hi Andreas, from what I see, the cruise & hike combo is indeed only available until September. So you'd have to do the two separately. I guess it could be due to the fact that the days are much shorter, so maybe there's not enough daylight for both on the same day. I'm not sure though. It's possible that there is simply less demand and it makes no sense for them to have the bus running.

Thursday 8th of September 2022

hi, this is amazing. can the cruise be booked one way so that i do pulpit rock hike and head back on my own?

Hi, unless you book some guided tour and simply go with a cruise+ hike option, the hike is always unguided. So you hike on your own. First, you do the cruise. Then they drop you off at the bus that takes you to the trailhead, and from there on, you are alone. I think that nowadays they have a bus to take you back to Stavanger, but I'm not sure if it's just one bus at a specific time (I doubt it), or they have a few buses that you can take depending on when you get back down from the mountain (I think it's the case indeed). In any case, if you stay much longer or decide to camp or whatever, nobody will be expecting you back. So you'll have to get back to Stavanger on your own (be sure to research how you'll do it and how late buses run).

This is just what I was looking for, thanks so much.

Glad to help. Have a great time in Stavanger!

Friday 3rd of June 2022

Your website has been so helpful in planning our trip! Do you think the cruise is worth the money if we are already going to see Sognefjord and Geirangerfjord? Thanks!

Saturday 4th of June 2022

Hi Rosemary, we did all three of these fjords and enjoyed them all. While each is somewhat different, of course, it's also a rather similar experience. So you don't absolutely have to see each of them. We did the Lysefjord cruise in combination with the Pulpit Rock hike and then the other day - on our way to Florli4444 hike. So for us, it was just part of the day that included other great attractions/ hikes as well. In both cases, we found it totally worth it. If you are only in Stavanger for one day, you can easily fill the day just visiting the city (but visiting all the museums, etc. won't be cheap either - but really interesting too) - see our guide to the best things to do in Stavanger. But if you have more than a day in the city and the weather is nice, I'd definitely do it (potentially in combination with one of the hikes, as we did). Have a great trip!

Wednesday 4th of May 2022

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences, I’ve enjoyed following along! I’m heading to Stavanger next week and would love to fit in both the Lysefjord cruise and Pulpit Rock hike in the same day also. I can’t seem to locate the combination tour, did you book the morning hike to the Pulpit Rock and then the cruise separately? I’m wondering if I’ll have enough time to do the 5am hike and be back to make the 10am cruise? Thank you again for your recommendations!!

Thank you soooo much for the quick responses and additional information!! I’m really looking forward to the trip and wish I had more time to explore. Many thanks, again!

Hi Jennifer, all the info is in our article, but indeed some tours are now unavailable so I updated those links. Anyway, I was able to find this tour on Viator that is exactly what we did - the cruise and then hike (on our own). Or you can also book it on Rodne website as explained in the article. You don't have to return to the city. After visiting the fjord, the cruise drops you off where there's a bus waiting to bring you to Preikestolen. After the hike, you have to return to the city on your own, which is really easy to do too. If you absolutely want to have a guide for your hike, then you'll have to do these two trips separately (see tours here), but if you don't mind hiking on your own, these are really the best options. And no, even if you take a 5am trip, you won't be back in the city at 10am. Most Preikestolen hike tours from Stavanger and back take about 9 hours. Have a wonderful trip!

Licensed Guide and Norway Tour Planner

Lysefjord guide, lysefjord, located in southwestern norway, is a majestic fjord that stretches about 42 kilometers (26 miles) long..

Flanked by towering granite cliffs that rise to heights of over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) in some places. One of the most iconic landmarks along the Lysefjord is the famous Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, a flat-topped cliff that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the fjord below.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Lysefjord in Norway largely depends on your preferences for weather, activities, and the type of experience you're seeking. Here are some considerations for different seasons:

Blog: See my packing list for Norway .

Summer (June to August): Summer is the most popular time to visit Lysefjord due to the milder temperatures and longer days. The weather is relatively comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). This is an ideal time for hiking, boat cruises, and other outdoor activities. Keep in mind that summer is also the peak tourist season, so popular sites may be more crowded.

Spring (May to June) and Fall (September to October): Spring and fall offer a balance between fewer tourists and reasonably good weather. During these seasons, you can experience the beauty of blooming flowers in spring or the changing colors of autumn. Temperatures can vary, but you can generally expect cooler weather compared to summer.

Winter (November to March): Winter in Lysefjord can be a magical experience, especially if you enjoy a snowy landscape. While boat tours may be less frequent, the area transforms into a winter wonderland. If you're a fan of winter sports like skiing or simply want to experience the fjord in a quieter setting, visiting during the winter months can be a unique and serene experience. Keep in mind that some hiking trails may be closed or challenging due to snow and ice.

Getting Into

The Lysefjord is quite secluded with road (523) reaching the western part and the scenic FV500 road reaching the end of the fjord at Lysebotn. Most travel to the Lysefjord for a day trip to either hike the Pulpit Rock, Kjeragbolten, and/or do a fjord cruise, and keep the nearby town of Stavanger as their base.

Bus: The Company Go Fjords has an Express-bus taking you to Øygardsstøl, for those who want to hike up to Kjeragbolten (The Kjerag Boulder). They also offer a bus that takes you to the starting point of the hiking trail for Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock).

Ferry: Lysefjorden 365 is a ferry company with several options for cruising on the Lysefjord. Their ferries stop at several of the main docks throughout the fjord. Rødne has a ferry heading to Flørli, where you can climb the Flørli stairs. Go Fjords operates a summer fjord cruise with one of their ferries.

Car: There are plenty of parking spots along the fjord where you can start various hikes. Find the Preikestolen parking here and the Kjerag parking here . The drive on FV550 to Lysebotn is a scenic and winding road which can be a fun experience. Rent a car in Norway here.

Village in Lysefjord next to the water

Places to Stay

Most who visit the lysefjord will end up staying in Stavanger (see my guide for Stavanger), but if you’d like to stay in the fjord area closer to nature there are a few options.

The Gøysa Farm is located at the west end of the Lysefjord in the small village of Forsand. It’s a family friendly place with their own playground and there is a grill you can use for cooking. The scenery is beautiful here and the area is great for biking trips.

If you plan on hiking the Pulpit Rock and want to stay nearby the hiking trail, then you could spend a couple of nights at the Hikers Camp which is part of the Pulpit Rock basecamp. Accommodations are small solid tent-like structures and you need to bring your own sleeping bag.

Further inside the fjord is the Flørli 4444 hostel which is a basic, but great option for staying deep inside the fjord and have easy access to the 4,444 steps (hence the hostel name) taking you up the mountain side with great views of the fjord.

If you are looking for some luxury accommodation, head to the Bolder Lodge nearby the Pulpit Rock. This place was designed by the architecture firm Snøhetta (designed the Opera House in Oslo) and is a architectural gem located high above the fjord.

Note that prices for hotels highly fluctuate throughout the year, and if you book early you can sometimes find good deals! The high season in Norway goes from June to August.

Places to Eat

Many end up renting a place with a kitchen and do some of their own cooking, and pack big lunches suited for long hikes.

You can find some restaurants/cafés in either Jørpeland , Flørli or Lysebotn .

Things to Do

Lysefjord is known for offering a range of outdoor activities and breathtaking natural attractions.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in and around Lysefjord:

Fjord cruises

The Lysefjord is surrounded by steep dramatic mountain sides, which makes it ideal for fjord cruises. Starting in Stavanger, you can join the Rødne Lysefjord Cruise which makes three stops along the way, including below the Pulpit Rock. The silent electric ferry makes this a very enjoyable cruise.

For a higher pace, check out this RIB-fjord cruise from Stavanger to the Lysefjord.

For another type of cruise take a guided kayak-tour bringing you close to wildlife and the scenery.

Lysefjorden offers a lot of possibilities for hiking, but there are three hikes that are particularly popular. The most well-known being the hike up to Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock). To hike up is moderately-demanding and you can expect the hike to be about 4-5 hours round-trip. It’s advisable to be well-equipped with good shoes, hiking clothes, and something warm and waterproof. Check out the page of Visit Norway for more information on this hike.

For Guided tours of the Pulpit Rock I’d check out: GetYourGuide and Pulpit Rock Tours .

The second most famous hike is up to Kjeragbolten (The Kjerag Boulder). This is basically a big boulder jammed in between two mountain sides. Being able to stand on top of the boulder makes for some very memorable photos. In addition to that, it’s a great hike which I can highly recommend. The hike is a bit longer (6-10 hours) than the Pulpit Rock and you should be in a fairly good condition to enjoy it. Check out the page of Visit Norway for more information on this hike .

For guided tours of the Kjerag Boulder I’d check out: GetYourGuide and Lysefjorden Adventure .

A third hike goes up the 4444 stairs of Flørli. The stairs follow next to the two water pipelines and the rails where a trolley used to transport people and materials up and down the mountain. This is a fairly easy 3-4 hour hike , and you can find more information here .

The Lysefjord has road access to the west and east (end) part, and there are several ferry companies connecting smaller villages along the fjord. Most who explore the Lysefjord end up staying in Stavanger, and do day trips from there.

The website ENTUR can be helpful for planning public transportation in the area.

The Lysefjord in Ryfylke

The Lysefjord in Ryfylke is one of the longest fjords in Norway. Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), Kjerag, and the Flørli stairs are the major attractions, and fjord cruises from Stavanger are a popular activity.

The mesmerising mountains surrounding Lysefjord were sculpted by the massive ice sheets that covered Norway during the Ice Age. Along extensive stretches of the fjord, the mountains soar over 1000 metres above sea level. The intricate geological features, landscapes, and loose sediments make Lysefjord a distinctive and unparalleled natural phenomenon.

Lysefjord holds the certification for Sustainable Destination, a quality mark for destinations that systematically work to reduce the negative impact of tourism on local communities.

  • Maximum depth: 456 metres deep
  • Nearby cities: Jørpeland, Sandnes, and Stavanger
  • Villages along the Lysefjord: Lysebotn, Flørli, Songesand, Forsand, Oanes

Fjord cruises from Stavanger

You can experience Lysefjord all year round with fjord cruises departing from Stavanger by Rødne Fjord Cruise. Gliding through the majestic fjord, surrounded by towering cliffs, and passing landmarks like Hengjanefossen fall, Fantahåla, and the renowned Preikestolen standing 604 metres above, creates enduring memories. During the summer, you can join a day trip from Stavanger to the remote village of Flørli, where you can ascend the world's longest wooden staircase with 4,444 steps.

Ferries on Lysefjord

Kolumbus operates regular ferry services between Lauvvik and Lysebotn throughout the year.

The express boat MS Rygerfjord has room for 92 passengers and 10 bicycles. The boat arrives at Lauvvik, Forsand, Bratteli, Bakken, Songesand, Kallali, Flørli, Håheller and Lysebotn. Tickets must be pre-booked at billetter.kolumbus.no .

The car ferry MS Sveio can accommodate 146 passengers and 26 cars with a length of 108 metres. The ferry arrives at Lauvvik, Forsand, Songesand, Flørli and Lysebotn. Tickets must be pre-booked at billetter.kolumbus.no .

If you approach Ryfylke and Lysefjord from the south, you can take the ferry from Lauvvik to Oanes, where the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke begins. The car ferry operates on a fixed timetable, and there is no need to pre-book tickets.

Preikestolen and Kjerag

Lysefjord is an ideal destination for hiking. The most renowned mountain hikes in the area are the iconic rock cliff Preikestolen and the boulder at Kjerag . Both hikes are designated as Norwegian Scenic Hikes.

"Lysefjorden rundt" (hike around Lysefjord) is a highly popular signature hike meticulously selected, quality-assured, and warmly recommended by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). Additionally, Flørlitrappene and Kallaliklumpen in Flørli are worth visiting.

Accommodation along Lysefjord

There is an extensive range of accommodation options available across all price ranges along Lysefjord.

The impressive The Bolder , designed by Snøhetta, is situated in a breathtaking location offering spectacular views of Lysefjord.

Close by, in Forsand, you will find Gøysa Gard , where you can stay in farmhouse lodgings or rent cottages with fjord views. Another option is Lysefjorden Marina , providing waterfront apartments.

At the innermost part of Lysefjord, you will discover the DNT cabin Lysefjorden Turisthytte . This colourful tourist cabin, which features a restaurant with full service, is just 50 metres from the pier.

In the remote village of Flørli , located midway along the fjord, you can rent apartments, stay in a hostel, or spend the night in the old radio hut. There is also a campsite in the area in front of the café.

Across the fjord, you will find Songesand Camp , which can accommodate 11 people and offers space for both tents and campervans.

Preikestolen Camping , Wathne Camping , and Landa Park Camping are campsites within driving distance of Lysefjord.

Lysebotn, Flørli, and Songesand

The power-producing village of Flørli has transformed from an agricultural and industrial community into a cultural village. Join a historical village walk through the area and listen to the incredible stories about the power station, water pipes, and the 4,444 steps along the pipeline. Hike up the Flørlitrappene (Flørli stairs) or explore the spectacular Kallaliklumpen . There are cafes and plenty of accommodation options in Flørli.

At the innermost part of Lysefjord lies the power-producing village of Lysebotn , which has supplied electricity to large parts of the country since the 1950s. This small village has around 10 permanent residents but Kjerag attracts a multitude of tourists and BASE jumpers from all corners of the world during the summer season. In the village, you'll find accommodation, cafes, a local shop, and tourist information. Here, you can rent bicycles, kayaks, and fishing equipment.

From Lysebotn and Flørli, you can take the ferry to Songesand. Here, you can spend the night or drive through the magnificent mountain landscape to Nes in Årdal. You can also drive the Lysevegen road, with the 27 hairpin bends, to Sirdal from Lysebotn (winter closed road).

Explore Lysefjorden

A taste of all the great attractions along the fjord follows below.

Midway in Lysefjorden in Ryfylke lies Flørli. The small, roadless village is popular for its stairs of 4444 steps up the mountain, the longest wooden stairway in the world.

Rising 1,084 metres above the Lysefjord, Kjerag is the tallest peak of them all. This massive mountain has for ages been admired from the fjord, however during the last few years, it has become increasingly more popular to hike up to the actual mountain plateau.

Preikestolen

Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) towers 604 metres above the Lysefjord in Ryfylke, and has ranked top in international lists of unique nature-based experiences. Would you like to visit one of the biggest tourist attractions in Norway?

The small village of Forsand in Sandnes municipality is located at the crossing point between the Lysefjord and the Høgsfjord i Ryfylke.

Lysebotn is idyllically located at the end of Lysefjorden in Ryfylke. The trail to Kjerag is close by. Here you can have an active holiday both in the mountains and at the fjord.

Songesand is a small village by Lysefjorden, not far from Preikestolen and Kjerag in Ryfylke.

Three large swords stand in Stavanger as a memory to the Battle of Hafrsfjord in year 872, when King ... [+] Harald Fairhair gathered all of Norway under one crown.

With more than half a million passenger visits recorded on more than 200 cruise ships in 2023, Stavanger is one of the most popular cruise ports in Norway.

Its location on the southwest coast means the city is often included at the beginning or end of a fjords itinerary. On such trips, a port call in Stavanger is a chance to enjoy a Scandinavian city break and to discover the area’s cultural heritage in the city’s many museums.

If your cruise continues on up the coast or doesn't include much time exploring the fjords, Stavanger provides an ideal opportunity to visit the Lysefjord, one of Norway’s most famous fjords, on a day trip.

Gateway To The Lysefjord

For many cruise visitors, Stavanger is synonymous with the Lysefjord, one of Norway’s most famous and stunning fjords. The fjord, with its steep cliffs and clear waters, is a must-see for nature lovers, but is usually only accessible to relatively small cruise ships.

However, Stavanger is the ideal base for excursions to the Lysefjord by passenger ferries or even a more thrilling experience on a RIB boat.

Sightseeing tours and RIB boat trips visit waterfalls on the Lysefjord.

On such sightseeing tours, guests should be able to make out the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) clifftop that towers almost 2,000 feet above the fjord. Closer to ground level, waterfalls, a family of goats, and diverse birdlife are among the highlights.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

While these excursions are usually offered by the cruise line, it’s simple to book independently. The departure point is a short walk from the cruise terminal and you’ll save plenty of money.

The popular 3.5-hour sightseeing cruise from Rodne costs 795 Norwegian kroner (approx $75) when booked in advance. For a more thrilling ride, the 1 hour and 45 minute tour from Stavanger RIB costs 1,390 Norwegian kroner (approximately $130) and comes with all necessary equipment.

Stay In Stavanger

If your cruise itinerary will include sailings along famous Norwegian fjords such as the Sognefjord or Nordfjord, you may prefer to use the port call in Stavanger to see the city.

Unlike many city ports these days, most cruise ships dock in central Stavanger, meaning most major attractions are within walking distance.

The picturesque old town is just steps away from the cruise terminal in Stavanger, Norway.

Where to start? Step off the ship and immediately onto the historic cobbled streets of Gamle Stavanger, the picturesque old town renowned for its charming white, wooden houses.

Wandering through the cobblestone lanes, where vibrant flowers spill from hanging baskets and brighten the streets, is especially delightful on a sunny day. Just be aware before taking photos and peeking into windows that this is an active residential neighborhood.

These charming white facades create a timeless atmosphere, but the city also boasts a vibrant street art scene that adds a burst of color and creativity.

The street art movement, driven by the Nuart festival, features a wide range of works, from large, striking murals to more subtle pieces that interact with the city's environment.

You're never far from murals or other street art in the center of Stavanger.

For more color, head to Øvre Holmegate for a coffee or simply a walk. In contrast to the white buildings that dominate much of the city, this street bursts with vibrant hues. Enjoy a light lunch in its lively sidewalk cafes during the afternoon before heading back to the ship.

Stavanger’s Museums

Norway’s oil and gas hub hosts the family-friendly Norwegian Petroleum Museum , which explores the history, economic impact, and technological progress of the oil industry, as well as its controversies, like disasters and climate change.

The museum features interactive exhibits for kids, including a rescue slide, life raft, and a mini oil platform. The adjacent playground is made from repurposed oil industry components.

Other notable museums include the Stavanger Maritime Museum, highlighting the region's seafaring history, and the Stavanger Art Museum, showcasing Norwegian and international art. The Museum of Archaeology features Viking artifacts and exhibits on Norway's ancient history.

Sightseeing Bus

If you want to get a flavor of the city without walking too much, consider booking a ticket for a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus, always available when cruise ships are in dock.

City sightseeing buses line up next to the cruise terminal in Stavanger.

These sightseeing buses run to a fixed timetable. They can be used as transport between the main sights, or as a straightforward sightseeing tour. It’s a value way to see the sights slightly farther afield, including the sverd i fjell monument of swords, which commemorates the 9th-century Battle of Hafrsfjord.

One important point to note is that Stavanger plays host to two competing sightseeing bus companies: ‘City Sightseeing’ and ‘Hop On’. This can be confusing when you step off the ship, so be sure to know which one visits the places you want to see, as the route maps do differ slightly.

To beat the queues, book online in advance. You’ll save money and you’ll be able to approach the bus directly, skipping the ticketing queues.
