Martine Rose Shrunken Track Jacket

Lamar has been spotted in Martine Rose several times before. The menswear brand, founded in 2007 by British-Jamaican designer Martine Rose, has collaborated with major brands such as Nike and Clarks .

Last year, Martine Rose dropped a limited-edition collection with The Hillbillies — KDot and Baby Keem — to commemorate the duo’s Camp Flog Gnaw performance.

Rose and Lamar first linked up while the rapper was on tour. “The first time I worked with Kendrick was on his last tour in the U.K.,” she told British Vogue in 2023. “I was lucky enough to meet him backstage and I remember feeling like there was such an authentic connection there. I think we understand each other on a creative level.”

The visual for “They Not Like Us,” directed by Lamar and Dave Free, was filmed in Compton and featured cameos from producer DJ Mustard, NBA player Demar DeRozen and members of the TDE family including J-Rock, Ab-Soul, SchoolBoy Q and label heads Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith and Terrence “Punch” Henderson.

The music video has racked up 17 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours, surpassed a million views within an hour of its release and is currently trending No. 1 on YouTube.

In the decades since hip-hop’s conception, artists have taken transformative steps when it comes to communicating stories. While the genre has invariably been tethered to innovation and multiple mediums, the scale of performance has been slower to evolve. For years, less is more was the formula when it came to the live show: a rapper, DJ and hype-man were the go-to trifecta. Today, Kendrick Lamar demonstrates how far hip-hop has come with his ongoing “The Big Steppers Tour” — performance art at its pinnacle.

Before Kendrick Lamar and pgLang took the stage in Washington D.C. on Thursday night (August 4), Tanna Leone and Baby Keem, both members of the pgLang team, set it using dramatically different visuals. Leone, the newest signee of pgLang’s self-cultivated record label, opened the show with songs from his April 2022 album “Sleepy Soldier,” treating fans to a medley of ambient lighting, alternating monochromatic visual effects, and a refreshing vocal approach.

The dancers flowed through songs such as “N95” and “Silent Hill,” melding together as one in a mind-blowing audio/visual moment of shadow and sound for the song “LUST.” from Kendrick’s 2017 album, “DAMN.” Lamar’s performance of “Crown,” the piano heavy centerpiece to “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” featured the rapper himself at the keys.

In the territory of being a megastar, it’s essential to perform the room-shakers, of which Kendrick Lamar has an abundance. But, as noted, the unexpected nature of this set always allows for a twist. Performing from a levitating quarantine room, longtime fans were elated to hear some of their favorites such as “DNA.,” “Money Trees,” “LOYALTY.,” “Backseat Freestyle” and “family ties” with cousin Baby Keem.

To round out this incredible display of sights and sounds, Lamar performed the standout track from “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” “Savior,” proving yet again that his elevated artistry carves an unobstructed path to hip-hop’s Mt. Rushmore. His “Big Steppers Tour” is yet another statement of intent, taking performance art in the genre, and music as a whole, to new heights.

Kendrick Lamar Is Really Getting Some Fits off Lately

“I’m best-dressed moving forward,” Kendrick Lamar declares on “The Hillbillies,” his new track with Baby Keem. A rapper  boasting about being stylish wouldn’t normally be news—but it is in the case of Kendrick, who’s remained a relatively modest dresser (at least in comparison to his fashion-plate contemporaries like  Future ,  A$AP Rocky , and  Tyler, the Creator ) throughout his decade-plus career, primarily sticking to a very laid-back, West Coast wardrobe of hoodies, plaid shirts, and Nike Cortezes. In 2023, though? The Pulitzer-winning MC might now truly have the menswear bonafides to back up that bold best-dressed claim.

On “The Hillbillies,” which dropped on streaming this week, Kendrick supplements his proclamation with a whole host of insider references: He likens himself to Taz Arnold, the producer and fellow LA native known for his steezy “Compton cowboy” style who once appeared in  the famed Tommy Ton photo of Ye, Virgil, and crew at Paris Fashion Week in 2009;  on Twitter , Kendrick called Taz “my mount rushmore of style.” He namechecks designers  Grace Wales Bonner (“I ain’t even gotta fact check, all I’m wearing is Wales Bonner”) and  Martine Rose (“Wear Martine when I board jets”). Kendrick fans know he’s been on a real Martine kick lately, having worn the London-based label throughout his most recent tour.

In the last year or so—or ever since he emerged at the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show wearing  a custom flared Louis Vuitton suit —Kendrick’s been on a full fashion tear, enlisting celebrity stylist Taylor McNeill to help him pull out big fits at every turn. Just after releasing his long-awaited fifth album  Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers last year, he debuted a few tracks while sitting front row at  the Spring 2023 Louis Vuitton show as a tribute to the house’s late designer Virgil Abloh; he wore a Tiffany & Co. diamond-encrusted crown of thorns, the same one he donned for the album’s artwork. When he collected a Best Rap Album Grammy for  Mr. Morale a year later, he gave his acceptance speech dressed in—who else?—head-to-toe Martine Rose.

At last month’s  Met Gala , Kendrick Lamar skipped posing on the iconic museum steps despite wearing one of the evening’s coolest looks: Dressed by Chanel, he wore a quilted black leather car coat over a white T-shirt, loose black trousers, and a Chanel scarf tied around his waist like a belt. He sported Chanel double-Cs in unorthodox places: iced out on one of his central incisors, embroidered onto a backwards Starter cap that also featured the logo of his beloved LA Dodgers. At the most-photographed celebrity red carpet of the year, the only pictures of Kendrick that evening were taken inside.

But the lo-fi, pleasantly silly video for “The Hillbillies” is a fit check bonanza. Kendrick wears snakeskin boots, crochet knits, shredded Japanese denim, even a Rick Owens puffer, in addition to loads of Martine Rose and a whole host of other deep-cut brands. (He also sports a cheeky pair of Adidas Sambas, possibly designed by Wales Bonner, which incidentally puts him  in a hotspot within the general best-dressed discourse.) There’s even a cameo from a fellow Big Style Stepper—Tyler, the Creator—who stays true to his usual gold teeth and penny loafers vibe.

Tyler, Future, Rocky and Kendrick all came up in the late 2000s and early 2010s, as hip-hop style was reshaped via the pioneering fashion instincts of Ye and Pharrell—the latter of whom will debut his first collection for Louis Vuitton in Paris later this month. New generations of style-minded artists have proliferated in their wake, making the best-dressed pool so well-populated these days that it’s hard to keep up. Thankfully, Kendrick isn’t taking up the gauntlet lightly.

Kendrick performed alongside Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem during the halftime show wearing a custom flared suit from the late designer Virgil Abloh’s final Louis Vuitton menswear collection. It marked the first Big Step in his fashion journey.

Some months later, Kendrick surprised the crowd at the Vuitton show by performing a medley of songs off his then-new album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers while seated next to Naomi Campbell in the front row. He closed things out with an echoed mantra of “Long live Virgil.”

To perform “Rich Spirit” and “N95” on SNL , Kendrick donned a bright-pink velour hoodie and a multitude of high-octane belts.

Kendrick Lamar’s Big Steppers Tour, which kicked off back in June, is set to wrap up in December. Support on the tour has come from Baby Keem and Tanna Leone.

Monday, Kendrick shared a tweet alerting fans to the fact that the official pgLang site has been updated to include shopping links for a variety of Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers -focused merch pieces, including designs seen in person at various tour stops over the past several months.

Following its four-night run in Los Angeles earlier this month, Kendrick’s Big Steppers Tour—support for which is handled by Baby Keem and Tanna Leone —is set to resume next month in Amsterdam. At the time of this writing, the final scheduled stop was the second of two nights in Auckland, New Zealand on Dec. 17.

Also in October, Kendrick Lamar—marking his third such appearance—will perform on a Miles Teller-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live . Other recently confirmed musical guests for the upcoming season include Megan Thee Stallion (who will also host) and Willow.
