In late 2023, Away launched a new iteration of The Carry-On that somehow made it even more efficient. There are three spacious pockets and a trolley strap on the outside so you can stack it on top of another rolling suitcase, as well as a USB port for charging your phone (though you'll have to purchase a battery separately).

Inside the suitcase, three more zippered pockets – including one for wet items – help you stay organized, while buckles keep the main compartment's tie-down straps out of your way while packing. This spinner can conveniently expand by 0.75 inches, but keep in mind if you're flying that overpacking may put it over your carry-on size allowance.

I've used other spinner suitcases in the past, but none of them glide as smoothly as this bag, with its 360-degree dual-spinner wheels. I also love the high-quality, lightweight material, but my favorite part is its organizational features – especially the WetPak pocket. Weighing just under 4 pounds, this bag is the lightest hard-sided carry-on we found on the market. It's constructed with an extremely durable German polycarbonate shell, and the interior has two mesh zippered compartments to keep your belongings from shifting. The inner nylon lining is also resistant to water and stains. To make the suitcase easy to maneuver, there's a top carry handle, a telescoping handle and dual-spinner wheels.

I was absolutely shocked by how light this suitcase is. While some lightweight designs can be extremely flimsy, this July carry-on is very durable and holds a good amount of clothing. With compression packing cubes I was able to pack enough clothing for a week. It was extremely easy to put in the plane's overhead compartment, and the wheels rolled very smoothly for my entire journey. The only thing I noticed is that since the bag is so lightweight, the trolley bag I had was making it want to topple. The Amazon Basics 20-inch Hardside Spinner is similar to many other hard-sided luggage products on the market, but it's available at a fraction of the price. The ABS shell is textured, so even if you – or luggage handlers – bang it around a bit, it does not show scuffs or scratches easily. The double-spinner wheels (a must, honestly, in today's luggage landscape) make the bag effortless to maneuver.

Inside, one side of the bag features a compression strap, while the other has a large fabric zippered closure, complete with a few organizer pockets for smaller items. Thanks to its availability on Amazon Prime, the carry-on luggage ships quickly, so it's also a great option if you need new luggage in a crunch.

This carry-on bag is a superb selection for the budget-conscious traveler. I appreciated how much I was able to get into this bag (it doesn't look huge, but it fit quite a lot), and the textured exterior really ups the durability factor. Compact and filled with useful features, this CALPAK underseater has a water-resistant exterior, a TSA-approved lock, and side and top handles for easy lifting into the overhead or pushing under the seat. There's a telescoping handle, a luggage trolley sleeve and two exterior pockets for stowing small items like your passport, boarding pass and earbuds.

On the inside, there's a padded laptop sleeve, multiple interior pockets and compression straps. For added convenience, the main panel can be secured via built-in snaps to get your laptop out while traveling (and keep your other belongings from spilling out), or you can unsnap it while packing to maximize the interior storage space.

When I'm traveling on a quick trip with my laptop, this is my go-to bag. Its compact size glides easily under the seat, and it's also compact and light enough to fit into the overhead bin even on the smallest regional planes. This Amazon Basics soft-sided carry-on also features a handle on the bottom between the wheels, which makes it easy to put the bag up into and pull it out of the overhead bin. On some airplanes, it may even be small enough to fit under the seat.

The interior of the bag features one large compartment with two compression straps, plus two zippered pockets on the opposite site. The 20.4-inch option is ideal for shorter trips, but this style is available in larger sizes as well. Another bonus: It's available on Amazon Prime, so it ships quickly.

This Amazon Basics option is on the smaller side for a carry-on, but that's what makes it a solid choice for business travelers going on short trips who only need to pack a few things. The laptop pocket is easily accessible, and the handle on the bottom of the bag is super useful for hauling it out of an overhead bin. The interior has leather details, compression straps and a removable compression pad with a pocket – ideal for small items like ties, fashion jewelry or silk scarves. Travelers can also purchase an additional compression pad to have a pad on each side of the interior compartment.

This suitcase exudes luxury with its Italian leather trim and understated elegance. The design of it looks very sleek, the interior is spacious, the handle is very sturdy and the wheels glide with ease. I especially liked that the top of the suitcase is very flat, which gave my trolley bag a secure base so it wasn't moving around while I was at the airport, and the front compartment was ideal for accessing my laptop on the go. The North Face's 22-inch Rolling Thunder duffel doesn't have the bells and whistles of other carry-on options, but it's a sturdy and reliable option for those who want a duffel style on wheels. The duffel has a hard-sided back panel, two wheels that can withstand various terrain and plastic bumpers for abrasion resistance. The soft-sided top of the bag is made of water-resistant Base Camp material and nylon for extra durability. There are two zippered pockets on the outside to stash small items and a mesh pocket inside for some added organization.

I brought this duffel on a trip to New Zealand, and it held up very well. The Rolling Thunder had no issues after being checked on six different flights, and the flexibility of the style allowed me to easily store it out of the way in my campervan once I had unpacked. It's definitely a simpler style, but it does its job well. Be aware, though, that this wheeled style doesn't have straps that would allow you to carry it like a duffel; it can only be rolled. – Catriona Kendall

When it comes to hands-free and adventure travel, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L can't be beat. This lightweight carry-on backpack comes with a sternum strap, a removable waist belt and a weight-distributing harness system, all to make for a comfortable carry (since sore shoulders can be a concern when it comes to carrying backpacks through time-consuming airport experiences).

Organization is a breeze with a top zippered pocket – perfect for storing travel documents or a Cotopaxi hip pack – and a padded laptop sleeve on the outside. Internally, you'll find two mesh compartments, one large and one subdivided, that work great with Cotopaxi packing cubes . The backpack's straps can be tucked away for more streamlined travel, and the bag even comes with a rain cover (though the Allpa is already TPU-coated to be water-resistant).

Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner: While the Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner is a solid (and sustainable) carry-on bag for less than $200, it doesn't offer quite enough space – especially for someone who may be traveling for longer.

Away The Aluminum Carry-On Bag: This is a well-built carry-on bag. The only downfall is that it's on the heavier side, weighing nearly 11 pounds. Away's Aluminum Carry-On is also more than twice the cost of the standard carry-on by Away, which works just as well.

Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner: This is a great soft-sided option if you're looking for a lightweight suitcase. Featuring a sleek nylon construction, a large front exterior pocket and internal zippered pockets, the Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner works well but isn't as lightweight as the July Carry-on Light.

Monos Carry-on Plus: It's a high-quality suitcase with a lot of internal details, but given its larger size this bag doesn't fit in the overhead compartment on multiple planes (especially regional jets). That said, if you're traveling domestically on larger planes, the Monos Carry-on Plus could be an option to consider. Or, the smaller standard Monos Carry-on could be a good option as well.

Aside from traditional rolling suitcases, the following items can be used as carry-on luggage provided they meet carry-on size limitations (which vary by airline) and fit in the overhead bin or fully under the seat (not sticking out) in front of you.

• Duffel and weekender bags:  This includes weekenders and duffel bags with wheels . Just note that wheels are included in carry-on dimension restrictions.
• Garment bags:  These are also considered carry-on baggage by most airlines. You can place your garment bag in the overhead bin, or in some cases, a small closet on the plane.
• Pet carriers:  Some airlines consider pet carriers to be carry-on luggage. Check with your chosen airline when preparing for your trip with Fido.
• Backpacks:  If your carry-on backpack fits under the seat, it will count toward your personal item allowance on most major airlines. This means you'll have the option to bring an additional bag for the overhead bin.
• Diaper bags: If you're traveling with a baby, diaper bags and other baby travel gear generally don't count toward either allowance – meaning you can bring these items in addition to your carry-on bag and personal item.

Purses , briefcases and camera bags can be carried on the plane as well, but usually aren't considered carry-on bags and are instead labeled personal items. Underseater bags – often designed specifically to fit comfortably under a plane seat – are also ideal as a personal item.

Typically, travelers can bring one carry-on bag (for the overhead bin) and one personal item (for under the seat) on the plane, free of charge.

Carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline. Several major U.S. carriers, such as American Airlines and United, impose a 22 x 14 x 9-inch rule. If you're buying new carry-on luggage, this is a good default size to choose – especially if you fly with a variety of airlines.

For international airlines, it's often 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches. To be sure about dimensions as well as any weight restrictions, see our guide to Carry-on Luggage Size & Weight by Airline . It usually doesn't matter how heavy your carry-on bag is, though some airlines do monitor the weight.

Our team tested 26 carry-on bags across several price points and on a variety of trips spanning overseas flights, weekend getaways, overnight trips and more. We traveled by car, plane, train and cruise and packed for a variety of climates and activities, from shore excursions in Mexico to rainy road trips around Iceland. For bags with wheels, we tested their maneuverability on multiple surfaces, including gravel, pavement, grass, moving walkways, cobblestone and carpet. Is hard-sided or soft-sided luggage better?

There are pros and cons to each. In general, hard-sided luggage offers more protection for your belongings than soft-sided luggage.

For checked bags, you're best bet is hard-sided luggage, since it can withstand tough handling and having other items stacked on top. Soft-sided luggage may be a good option if you want more flexibility, since fabric-made suitcases have a lot more give. Soft-sided pieces are a good option for carry-ons because they can flex and compress to fit into tight overhead bins.  

What size luggage should I buy?

We think it's best to start with a carry-on size, since it offers the most flexibility, whether you want to keep it in the cabin or check it. Most US airlines cap carry-on size at 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high, including handles and wheels.

When it comes to buying a checked bag, you'll want something between 25 and 29 inches long. Airlines typically charge a fixed fee for checked bags up to a certain weight, so it may be tempting to think a bigger suitcase is always better. However, bigger pieces of luggage come with more weight of their own, don't protect your items well when they're underpacked, and encourage overpacking, which can lead to higher baggage fees (or the dreaded airport floor repacking).

Delays, outages after potential cyberattack at Seattle-Tacoma Airport continue

System outages in the wake of a potential cyberattack continue to affect Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, commonly known as SeaTac, inconveniencing flyers for a third day .

Airport spokesperson Perry Cooper told USA TODAY Monday evening that there is still no timeline for a full restoration of the affected systems.

"We are doing what we can to mitigate the impact to passengers and airline partners," Aviation Managing Director Lance Lyttle said at a Sunday press conference .

Customs and Border Protection and Transportation Security Administration officials said at the press conference that their systems were not affected by the potential cyberattack.

Cooper said that the primary customer facing systems impacted by the outages were flight information displays and baggage movement and information systems.

The airport posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the  potential attack shortly after 9 a.m. PT  Saturday and said that it had "isolated critical systems"

Lyttle said that multiple systems remained offline, including email. The airport's website remained offline as of 2:30 p.m. PT Monday.

A TSA representative posted on X suggesting that travelers to the airport check in for flights and print out boarding passes at home Monday, echoing previous advice from the airport.

Potential cyberattack frustrates passengers, minimal effect on airlines

Two airlines that use the airport as a hub reported that their operations had been minimally affected by the outages.

Alaska Airlines told USA TODAY its systems were not impacted Sunday, but "the one area where we are starting to see some impacts today is with the Port of Seattle’s baggage sorting system, so we are proactively warning guests who are flying out of Seattle to avoid checking a bag if possible."

Delta Air Lines said that impacts on its operations at the airport continue to be minor Monday.

The flight tracking service FlightAware reported that there were 6 cancelled flights and 375 delayed flights at SeaTac on Sunday. As of 5 p.m. PT Monday, there have been 218 delays and 10 cancellations at the airport. It is unclear if the outages were related to the delays.

Flying in or out of Sea-Tac? No Wi-Fi or phones. No baggage tracking. Dark departure and arrival boards. But don’t fret. Here’s how to get through your journey like a pro.

One in four departures out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was delayed on Monday.

F our days after a cyberattack took down internet, phone, baggage and multiple other systems at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, authorities are still in the dark and travelers are still encountering a swath of inconveniences.

The Wi-Fi and phone systems are still down. The departure and arrival boards are dark. The airport’s app is not updating. Baggage sorting is being done by hand. The airport’s lost-and-found tracking system isn ’t working. The paid-parking system has also been impacted.

“We saw some nefarious characters that may have been on our system early in the morning on Saturday, and as we would take precautions for that, we actually turned off our entire system to avoid anything further,” Perry Cooper, an airport spokesperson, told reporters Monday afternoon.

When Sea-Tac’s systems will be restored is anybody’s guess. “We’re pretty much where we were previously on that situation,” Cooper said. “There’s currently no estimated time of return.”

On the bright side, fewer flights were disrupted on Monday compared to the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, a total of 474 departing flights—accounting for roughly a third of the airport’s scheduled departures—were delayed, according to data from FlightAware. On Monday, 172 departures out of Sea-Tac were delayed—still about a quarter of all scheduled flights.

The screening systems used by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at airport checkpoints were not impacted, according to Greg Hawko, the agency’s federal security director in Washington State. “We are on our own dedicated, secure network that is controlled by TSA,” he said.

Print your boarding pass or use the airline’s mobile app

The airport’s Wi-Fi is down. Before you get to the airport, print a physical boarding pass or use your airline app to get your mobile boarding pass and to check any bags. “This will help speed up the check-in process,” Cooper said.

Get to the airport three hours before departure

While larger airlines like Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines have their own check-in operations and dedicated gates at Sea-Tac, smaller carriers—Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country and the international airlines—have been especially affected by the outage.

“These are some of the folks using our common-use check-in counters and our kiosks and also the common-use gates that we have,” Cooper said. “Please arrive at least three hours early if you’re traveling with these carriers.”

Don’t check your bags if at all possible.

The baggage-sorting system is down. “If you can travel without checking bags, do so,” Cooper advised. “A lot our airlines are encouraging folks to just go ahead and carry on what you need and go straight to security checkpoints. That’ll make a big difference.”

The airport’s baggage tracking system uses about 10 miles of conveyor belts, with many scanners that track bags as they move toward the right plane. Currently, bags can only “go to a certain point,” explained Cooper, and are not being automatically routed to different parts of the airport and loaded on the correct aircraft. As a result, checked luggage is being sorted by hand.

Cooper noted that even for major airlines whose own bag-checking systems are working, the airport’s logjam is “potentially delaying some bags to get to where they’re going to go, so you may not notice anything until maybe you get to your destination.”

Adhere to carry-on rules.

“If you’re not used to traveling with only carry-on bags, check your bags for prohibited items and remember the 3-1-1 liquid rule ,” Hawko said.

The Sea-Tac app is currently not updating. If you are traveling over the next couple of days, check with your airline for current flight information and updates on baggage.

1994's Police Academy: Mission to Moscow Is an Outlier In Many Ways, But It Sucks Just as Hard As Most Other Entries

I only have four more movies to watch and then write about, and then I will be done with the research and writing of  The Fractured Mirror,  a 650-page magnum opus on the last century in American movies about filmmaking. 

That’s exciting! As someone with a terrible tendency toward procrastination, it feels damn good to finally finish something, to be able to cross it off your to-do list forever.

On a similar note, this article will conclude a seven-part series on the  Police Academy  films. It’s the latest in a series of journeys through low culture that I have conducted for this newsletter. I previously wrote about the Ernest P. Worrell movies, the  Fast and the Furious  franchise, the  Silent Night, Deadly Night  saga, and film spin-offs of Saturday Night Live, a long-running live sketch comedy show based in New York.

1994’s Police Academy: Mission to Moscow is an outlier. The first six Police Academy were cranked out, factory-style, yearly for an increasingly young and undiscriminating audience during the Reagan decade. 

They were critical punching bags and walking punchlines, but they were also consistent moneymakers churned out on low budgets for an audience that didn’t care about quality or originality. 

Police Academy: Mission to Moscow was filmed five years after the release of 1989’s Police Academy 6: City Under Siege. That may not be long for some franchises, but it is an eternity in  Police Academy  time. The idea was to keep cranking out the films until their target demographic hit puberty and outgrew them. 

The sixth sequel to a movie that famously wasn’t any damn good in the first place is also the first entry to flee our nation’s borders for the chilly embrace of the Soviet Union. They were once our hated rivals. Now, they’re the lovable losers of global politics. 

The A team is long gone. Steve Guttenberg? Hasn’t been in the series since its fourth entry. The comedy team of Bobcat Goldthwait and Tim Kazurinsky? They bowed out after Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol as well.

The B-team has similarly bounced. Matt McCoy, who occupied the Steve Guttenberg leading man role after the popular comic actor bolted, is also gone. The Steve Guttenberg/Matt McCoy role of Cadet Kyle Connors, a handsome, cocky, smartass leading man, is occupied by Charlie Schlatter. Schlatter rose to semi-fame as a poor man’s Matthew Broderick in teen peacock mode in the television adaptation of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. He’s just as adequate/undistinguished here as a third-rate knockoff of a second-rate Bill Murray.

The only  Police Academy  movie not to receive a robust theatrical release wasn’t even able to hold onto Bubba Smith, Marion Ramsay, and Lance Kinsey, Captain Harris’ doltish sidekick. 

Is a Police Academy movie even a Police Academy movie without the big guy who is very strong and can lift things and throw them large distances and the lady with the squeaky voice who sometimes gets angry even a Police Academy movie? 

Steve Guttenberg, I understand. He was a big star in the 1980s. But when you can’t hold onto Marion Ramsay, it’s probably time to pack it in and concede that perhaps the  Police Academy  series has run its course, and it’s time to put it out of its misery.  

Police Academy: Mission to Moscow inexplicably gives Schlatter’s unpromising newcomer a love interest in a Russian translator in, Katrina Sergeeva (Claire Forlani). Forlani would appear in Mallrats, The Rock and Basquiat in the next two years. 

In Police Academy: Mission to Moscow,  Russian Commandant Alexandrei Nikolaivich Rakov (Christopher Lee), in a terrible fit of judgment, is so impressed by George Gaynes’ impossibly idiotic Commandant Lassard that he recruits his help in taking down mafia kingpin Konstantin Konali (Ron Perlman). 

Konstantin has conquered the world with a game confusingly titled The Game. The filmmakers are foolish enough to show us a game that is supposed to be the most popular and irresistible video game ever created. 

Of course, Tetris  was a Russian video game that conquered the world and became an international pop culture phenomenon. That’s because it was a great game, whereas The Game consists of an ostentatiously Russian protagonist walking across an empty room and sometimes interacting with bears. 

The Game never rises to mediocrity, so the film’s contention that it’s the greatest in existence is distractingly implausible. If the movie had engaged me at all, that would have taken me out of  Police Academy: Mission to Moscow . 

Lassard and his least expensive, discriminating longtime costars travel to Russia to assist the local police in putting the big baddie in jail. 

I’ve written before about the double laughter that ensues when you laugh at something objectively idiotic and then laugh at yourself for being so stupid that you find idiocy laugh-out-loud funny. 

That’s how I felt at a subplot where Lassard, being the world’s biggest buffoon (but also, confusingly, a man honored as lawman of the decade in the previous film) gets into the wrong car upon arriving in Moscow.

Instead of assisting the Russians and his men in the investigation, Lassard spends his entire time in Russia with a random family that lets him just hang out. 

George Gaynes handles this nonsense with trademark aplomb. He was endlessly excited and curious about life. Gaynes is the single stupidest element of Police Academy: Mission to Moscow. He’s also the funniest. His performance here is sublime and transcendent in its stupidity. The rest of the film is just stupid. 

This ends the most American franchise on a sorry note.  Police Academy  should never have made it past the decade that defined it and that it, in turn, defined. That’s right: the 1980s are now the Police Academy decade.

This concludes my trip through the  Police Academy  movies. They aren’t all bad, but let’s be brutally honest; they mostly are. 

Will that be true of the The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, the next series I’ll tackle for this newsletter? I have no idea. I’m trying to go in with no expectations and to be open, as ever, to wonderful surprises. I remain, as always, cautiously optimistic.
