Popular on variety.

Chappelle has been a controversial figure following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about transgender people, leading to  company walkouts  and protests last October. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos originally defended Chappelle, saying in statement that the comedian is “one of the most popular stand-ups today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos ultimately said he “screwed up” in his reaction to the Chappelle backlash.

The comedian made headlines again in 2022 when he was attacked on stage  while performing a comedy set during the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Dave Chappelle sets August NYC dates as opener for 2023 U.S. comedy tour

Dave Chappelle performs during a midnight pop-up show at Radio City Music Hall on October 16, 2022 in New York City.

The multi-city “Dave Chappelle Live” comedy jaunt will open at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. Produced by Live Nation, the tour goes on to include stops in Detroit, New Orleans and Nashville — concluding in early October at the United Center in Chicago.

Presale tickets go on sale July 26, while the general sale begins July 27 at 10 a.m. local time through Ticketmaster .

Dave Chappelle, during a midnight pop-up show at Radio City Music Hall on October 16, 2022, is hitting the road this fall, setting two New York City dates at Madison Square Garden for its kickoff.

In recent years, the 49-year-old funnyman has become a lightning rod within the LGBTQ+ community for what many deem as anti-trans views.

Chappelle’s 2021 Netflix special, “The Closer,” sparked a social media firestorm and led to employee walkouts, firings and resignations at the streaming platform. The controversy even forced CEO Ted Sarandos to issue an “I screwed up” admission about how he handled the fallout.

Last July, a popular Minneapolis concert venue pulled the plug on a sold-out show — just hours before Chappelle was set to take the stage. The cancellation followed a public outcry against the booking, with many people expressing outrage at the venue for offering a platform to the “transphobe.”

And on May 3, 2022, a man attempted to attack Chappelle onstage during a historic show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. That man, identified as Isaiah Lee, was sentenced to 270 days in jail in December.

Meanwhile, Chappelle — a five-time Emmy and four-time Grammy Award winner, who was awarded the 2019 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor — has remained unapologetic about his anti-trans material.

Breaking news, who were the special guests at dave chappelle’s second msg show.

Dave Chappelle walks onstage at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Dave Chappelle topped himself.

After a star-studded first night at Madison Square Garden, the controversial comic brought in a number of huge comics and musical guests to his second show at MSG as part of his ‘It’s a Celebration B!%?#&$! Tour’ on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Before the “Chappelle’s Show” star took the stage, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart , Jeff Ross , Luenell and Earthquake got the show rolling.

But that’s not all.

In addition to a headlining set from the self-proclaimed “GOAT,” The Roots , Nas , De La Soul and Ludacris all performed as well.

At midnight, Chappelle turned 50 and many of the artists listed above started a countdown to wish him a happy birthday.

Yet, there’s still more.

On Friday, Aug. 25 and Saturday, Aug. 26 , Chappelle will return to the Garden for two more shows before taking off on the rest of his nationwide tour.

Want to see him — and presumably a handful of jaw-dropping special guests — live?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more below.

After his MSG stay, the “Chappelle’s Show” icon will perform all over North America.

Here’s where he’s headed next:

Dave Chappelle controversy

Over the past few years, Chappelle made waves for his insensitive material about the transgender community in his Netflix specials “Sticks and Stones” and “The Closer.”

Rather than apologize for his remarks, he doubled down and defended his point of view.

Many big names have spoken out about his baseless attacks.

“Dave Chappelle making jokes about trans people directly leads to violence, whether it’s verbal or otherwise, against trans people,” said US soccer star Megan Rapinoe in an interview with  Time Magazine .

Fellow comic Wanda Sykes shared with  Variety  that Chappelle’s material was “so hurtful and damaging to the trans community.”

That didn’t stop Chappelle from going after other marginalized groups.

In November 2022, Chappelle was asked to host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” On the program, he made several anti-Semitic jokes in his 20-minute monologue.

At the time of publication, Chappelle has not issued a sincere apology to either community.

Chappell Roan Cancels 2 Festival Appearances to 'Prioritize My Health': 'Things Have Gotten Overwhelming'

The singer-songwriter was scheduled to play both dates of the All Things Go festival on Sept. 28 and 29

Chappell Roan has pulled out of two upcoming festival performances, citing a need to tend to her mental health.

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer, 26, was scheduled to perform at both dates of the All Things Go music festival in New York City on Sept. 28, and in Columbia, Md. on Sept. 29.

But on Friday, Sept. 27, she announced on Instagram that she would no longer be performing, as pressures amid her meteoric rise to fame have been “overwhelming.”

“I apologize to people who have been waiting to see me in NYC & DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I am unable to perform. Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I am really feeling it,” Roan wrote in her Instagram Stories. “I feel pressures to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for understanding. Be back soon xox.”

In a statement shared to X (formerly Twitter), the All Things Go festival said it was important for fans "to remember that health and well-being always comes first."

"All Things Go strongly supports artists prioritizing their well-being and we ask our community to rally around Chappell Roan with love and understanding," the statement read. "Let's continue to show the world that music fans support not just the art, but the artists themselves."

The cancellations come one month after Roan called off shows on her European tour in Paris and Amsterdam that were scheduled for early September, citing scheduling conflicts.

“I am so sorry & very disappointed :( I promise I will be back,” she wrote at the time. “I’m heartbroken 💔 thank you for understanding.”

The singer-songwriter — who is fresh off a best new artist win at the MTV Video Music Awards — has been open in recent months about her struggles with the spotlight, and in an interview with The Face earlier this month, said she “might quit” the music industry if it becomes too much.

During the interview, she recalled an encounter with two male fans at an airport who followed her to TSA and verbally harassed her as they asked her to sign photographs.

"I’m just like: ‘What the f--- is going on?’ " she told the outlet. "I told myself, if this ever gets dangerous, I might quit. It’s dangerous now, and I’m still going. But that part is not what I signed up for."

She added that she feels fame is “abusive.”

"The vibe of this — stalking, talking s--- online, [people who] won’t leave you alone, yelling at you in public — is the vibe of an abusive ex-husband," Roan explained. "That’s what it feels like. I didn’t know it would feel this bad."

The star went viral in August when she posted an emotional plea to TikTok begging fans to respect her privacy.

“I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous,” she said. “I don’t care that it’s normal. I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job, [or] the career field I’ve chosen. That does not make it OK. That doesn’t make it normal. That doesn’t mean I want it. Doesn’t mean that I like it.”
