10 Celebrity Wedding Planners You Need to Know

By wedding spot.

Celebrity wedding planners are responsible for some of the most beautiful and magazine-worthy events we’ve ever seen. And their services aren’t usually limited to “only” celebrities, so if you’d like to hire one for your big day, we can assure you that you won’t be disappointed. But, depending on your budget, there are lots of ways to pick a talented planner with similar styles or specialties as well. The trick is to identify what you like best about a planner’s work (besides the fact that it’s so fabulous) and find someone whose portfolio matches your wishlist.

To help you get a better understanding of “who’s who” when it comes to celebrity wedding planners, we put together this detailed list of professionals for you to enjoy. Some of these planners have famous clientele and some of them are famous in their own right, but either way, they offer plenty of drool-worthy gems you have to see to believe.

Keep reading to discover who they are, some of the celebrities that they’ve worked with, what makes them stand out, and more.

Discover 10 of top celebrity wedding planners in the world:

1. colin cowie.

Colin Cowie has designed incredible events for Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, and plenty of other non-Jennifer A-listers (Lil Wayne, Kim Kardashian, and Oprah Winfrey, to name a few). With 30 years of experience, Cowie and his team provide the full suite of event planning services, including, but not limited to, destination events, floral and decor, and a package that offers “the ultimate in privacy and opulence as well as unpublished locations and venues not readily available in the market.”

What to look for: Planners who are willing to travel and bring plenty of knowledge with them. Cowie and his team bring an exciting mixture of experience, versatility, and flexibility to everything they do.

2. Jennifer Zabinski

Jennifer Zabinski of JZ Events has a client list that includes Serena Williams and Meghan Markle . Need we say more? Her services include full-scale wedding planning, budget management, destination programming, transportation, and welcome gift design, to name a few. Zabinski and her team are unique in that they offer full-scale planning for both large and small events.

What to look for: Someone who can take care of every little detail. Not every full-scale event planning agency can offer their skills for intimate gatherings, too, so if you plan to have a small wedding and want to work with Zabinski or someone like her, you’ll need to check on this detail when you first reach out.

3. Marcy Blum

Marcy Blum is said to have helped everyone from LeBron James to the Rockefeller family make their wedding and event dreams come true. Her own claim to fame, besides her star-studded clientele, is producing “parties that guests will talk about for years to come.” Blum’s unique blend of experience as a graduate of Culinary Institute of America, plus her flair for the theatrical and ability to perfect an atmosphere all while keeping her ideas practical, make her one of the world’s most sought-after celebrity wedding planners.

What to look for: In Blum’s own words, “our events innovate, rather than follow trends.” Look for wedding planners like Blum who have artistic backgrounds or have worked in related fields and who are just as concerned about the vibe of the event as they are about how you can reasonably put it all together.

Her gorgeous portfolio includes many classy, themed weddings and glamorous New York styles. Plus, she now offers planning and design for micro weddings !

What to look for: Event planners like Barone who paid their dues in the entertainment industry are great at working within tight budgets under a lot of pressure while producing A+ results. Finding someone with experience in this field is a huge win.

7. Bryan Rafanelli

Bryan Rafanelli is perhaps best known for his work on Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky’s wedding, but Rafanelli Events has produced more than 2,000 events, ranging from 15-15,000 attendees, across 50 cities and nine countries. His planning philosophy revolves around creating a customized approach and paying careful attention to every detail to ensure each event is unforgettable.

“My team listens to what you’re imagining and then comes back with an idea you never expected,” he says. “We hone in on every last detail so we can always deliver clients the highest level of service.”

The Rafanelli team’s wide array of services include everything from arrival gifts to videography and everything you can think of in between.

What to look for: Like the Rafanelli Events website says, your wedding is your wedding, not a Rafenelli wedding. Meaning it should look and feel like you and not an event planner’s signature. Any wedding planner who offers this much customization for both design and services is a great catch in our book.

8. Ed Libby

Ed Libby is an event professional who began his career in floral design and brought his sense of color, scale, and beauty to the greater event planning world throughout his career. Perhaps the most amazing service he and his team offer is in-house designing. They’re able to fabricate furniture and even offer printing services, to name just a few of the options they have available. Past clients include Kelsey Grammer and Carmelo Anthony.

What to look for: You know an Ed Libby event when you see one, as it often has a grand, larger-than-life focal point and is dripping with both florals and style. If you’re in love with this style, search for wedding planners with designs that feature plenty of natural elements, play with levels visually throughout the space, and look like a scene from a movie.

9. Joy Proctor

Joy Proctor has designed upscale weddings for celebrities like Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas . Proctor and her team design around the location itself, both in terms of venue and geography, to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Overall, the Proctor design aesthetic is understated yet feminine, and immersed in culture.

What to look for: Experts like Proctor are considered trendsetters because they have a signature method that works within a set of parameters (in this case her taste for romantic elements and designs rooted in history) to create works of art out of each and every wedding. Look for a portfolio filled with soft details, natural touches, and designs that accentuate your chosen venue.

Kevin Lee is a luxury and celebrity wedding and event planner with clients like Drew Barrymore, Wolfgang Puck, Liz Taylor, and Tom Cruise. If you’re a fan of Real Housewives, you might already be familiar with his work. Lee’s primary services are development, management, and logistics; production and design; and consultation and integration. When you think of Kevin Lee, you think of elegance and innovation.

What to look for: Planners who offer comprehensive services in each major event category. If you need help with a couple of major areas but not all of them, going with a wedding planner like Kevin Lee is a great strategy for saving money on a full-scale agency.

10 Years Later: All the Details From Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' Lavish Italian Wedding

The stars became husband and wife in an elaborate celebration at a castle in bracciano.

Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise Official Wedding Photo

"I think every little girl dreams about [her wedding]," Katie Holmes said in an interview with  Seventeen  in 2004. "I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise ."

"So let it be written, so let it be done."

As fate would have it, her childhood wishes came true less than a year later when, newly split from fiancé Chris Klein , she accepted the Oscar winner's marriage proposal, subsequently gave birth to the couple's only child, Suri , and went on to marry her girlhood crush in one of the most significant wedding ceremonies in Hollywood history.

As pop culture history goes, the marriage ended in a divorce settlement five and a half years later with primary legal custody of Suri granted to her mother.

Nevertheless, for nostalgia's sake, today marks a different milestone for those vows—their 10-year anniversary. On this day in 2006, the actors became husband and wife inside Bracciano, Italy's 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, a celebration that reportedly cost them upwards of $3 million.

With a price tag that grand, Tom and Katie's wedding cemented itself in celebrity bridal history. From the cream of the crop Hollywood guest list and double wedding gowns to a dinner serenade by  Andrea Bocelli , it seems no expense was spared on the night Holmes became Mrs.  Tom Cruise .

"If you get invited to that wedding, you go," Brooke Shields , a guest at the wedding, told Jenny McCarthy  in an interview on her  SiriusXM show  in January.

Before the wedding could begin, the bride needed a gown—or two. Holmes sported two dresses during the special night, both designed by wedding attendee Giorgio Armani . For the ceremony, the  Ray Donovan  actress donned an off-the-shoulder silk and lace design adorned with Swarovski crystals. The crystals alone took 350 hours to place, as People reported at the time.

Then, she switched into a one-shoulder off-white silk organza number embellished with more Swarovski crystals.

Katie wasn't the only one to dazzle the crowd in Armani—her groom and the wedding party all wore the label for the special night.

"Katie wanted a simple, elegant dress," Armani told People  at the time. "I wanted to make it modern but at the same time complement the sweetness and energy she conveys."

As fans would learn years later, Holmes accessorized with "something old" gifted to her by Shields. After being publicly criticized by Cruise for taking prescription medication for her postpartum depression, Shields said the actor came to her home to apologize. Soon after, she got a call from Holmes to invite her to their Italian nuptials.

"She said, 'It just wouldn't feel right without you there,'" Shields told McCarthy during the interview in January. "And I said 'OK, I'll bring the something old, as long as it's not me!' And she said, 'would you?'"

The former face of Calvin Klein ultimately delivered the bride-to-be an antique enamel compact.

The supermodel was just one name on the sprawling VIP list of famous attendees, which included  Will Smith  and  Jada Pinkett Smith , fellow Scientologists  John Travolta  and  Kelly Preston , David Beckham and Victoria Beckham , Jenny McCarthy and then-partner  Jim Carrey ,  Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez and former Scientologist Leah Remini .

Once inside the castle's armory doors, guests were greeted by flag bearers sporting traditional Renaissance attire. With Cruise's older children, Connor and Isabella , Holmes' maid of honor, sister Nancy Blaylock , and Cruise's best man, Scientology leader David Miscavige , present, the couple took part in Scientology's traditional "double ring" ceremony and sealed it with a kiss.

What followed was a seemingly endless celebration that carried into different halls of the castle, as People  described at the time. After a round of toasts, the bride danced with her father,  Martin Holmes , to  Louis Armstrong 's "What a Wonderful World" and joined Cruise for their first dance to  Fleetwood Mac 's "Songbird."

"It didn't take much time before I realized this Tom guy was a special guy—that he loved Katie, that he cared for her and supported her," Martin said during a toast at their rehearsal dinner at the Villa Aurelia. "Tonight, I am extremely proud and happy to raise my glass to Katie and Tom."

One five-tier wedding cake and fireworks display later, the guests danced the night away with music producer Mark Ronson spinning tunes and Lopez jumping in to perform one of her songs live when it came on.

A nostalgic moment arrived when Cruise sang  The Righteous Brothers ' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" to his bride—a nod to his iconic performance in  Top Gun .

Of course, the song now seems like a moment of foreboding as, five and a half years after they wrapped the late-night festivities and boarded a jet to the Maldives for their honeymoon, Holmes filed for divorce . The two have not remarried and Holmes continues to live with her daughter.

While their high-profile relationship was a subject of controversy and speculation since Cruise first jumped on Oprah Winfrey 's couch, the actress recently revealed she wouldn't do it differently.

"I really enjoy my life," she told Ocean Drive   a year ago. "I don't really regret anything that I've done. I've learned from everything, and everything sort of leads you to the next place. I just keep going."

Celebrity wedding planner who worked Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie found dead at her home in Italy

A well-known celebrity wedding and party planner who has worked with several Hollywood A-listers including Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks, and Will Smith, was reportedly found dead at her home in Italy.

Law enforcement in Italy found 37-year-old Eleonora Rioda, unconscious at her Venice apartment on Easter Sunday, before responding paramedics were unable to revive her, according to a report by Italian newspaper Corriere del Veneto .

Rioda founded Venice First, an events company that organized the wedding of Real Madrid star Alvaro Morata and Alice Campello in 2017. While she had recently suffered from health problems, the specifics are still unclear.

The glamorous entrepreneur began her illustrious career working with luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent and soon moved to the Netherlands to join an event organizer called DMC. In 2009, Rioda founded her own company after returning to Venice. She soon rose to prominence and came to be known as the best VIP wedding planner in the city.

Then again in 2011, she made international headlines after she was roped in to organize the wedding of one of India's wealthiest daughters, Ritika Agarwal, who tied the knot with Rohan Mehta.

The bill for the lavish event which saw three days of celebrations and reportedly cost over £7million ($9 million) was footed by Ritika's business tycoon father Pramod Agarwal. It was a star-studded affair requiring over five hundred staff to keep the guests happy. Popular rock troop Florence and the Machine also performed for the newlywed couple.

In 2017, Rioda organized events for Alvaro Morata as he took the holy vows with fashion blogger Alice Campello. The grandiose function, which had over 400 guests, saw the couple take separate boats to the Basilica del Redentore, where they eventually met and tied the knot. The lovers then took a tour of the dreamy city's famous canals.

The celebrated event planner also arranged for a stunning five-tier cake and a Cinderella-style carriage made from fairy lights for their wedding reception. What's more? An assorted collection of Cuban cigars were also presented to guests on the house.

According to Rioda's website, she had worked with several household names including Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr, Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Ben Stiller, and Jamie Foxx, reported  Daily Mail .

"I barely even did my own wedding. Patrick went and tried the food and did all that. I never even saw the place where I got married before I got married – that’s how uninvolved I was," she told  Closer .

"I don’t care, as long as everybody was there and had a good time – it doesn’t bother me. Plus, I’m quite lucky I get to dress up and have really special occasions all the time, so to me that wasn’t the most exciting thing to happen."

David Hasselhoff and Hayley Roberts

Andrea Bocelli serenaded the bride as she walked up the aisle on the arm of her stepfather, Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

Hollywood sweethearts Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel tied the knot in an intimate Italian wedding at the magnificent Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia in 2012. The groom serenaded his bride with a song specially written for her as she waltzed down the aisle in a spectacular pink Giambattista Valli gown.

Why did they decide to marry in Italy? Well, the couple openly admitted their love for Italian food, ("We love to eat!"). And during the special weekend, they urged their guests to join in their adoration, offering affogato (ice cream and coffee) and mini Caprese salads.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding in Italy

Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes in a sunset ceremony at Odeschalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy in November 2006, after a whirlwind romance. The star-studded nuptials were attended by the likes of Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and Will Smith. However, their marriage ended in June 2012, when Katie filed for divorce.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

The model and John Legend celebrated their nuptials on Lake Como, Italy, in September 2013. The wedding took place at Villa Pizzo, the location where they first fell in love.

Chrissy wore a total of three Vera Wang dresses on her big day. Speaking to E! News after her special day she revealed that she couldn't stop buying Vera Wang's gowns. "Every time I went in for a fitting, I couldn't stop getting one," she explained. "It's just too pretty."

Wayne and Coleen Rooney

Wayne Rooney married his childhood sweetheart in a lavish £5 million ceremony on the Italian Riviera. The couple said 'I do' at the Villa Durazzo, a 17th-century palace in the Mediterranean resort of Santa Margherita Ligure with just eight close family and friends as witnesses.

The couple were married by the deputy mayor, Gianni Costa, who said afterwards: "It was a simple 20-minute ceremony with around 15 people inside, mostly family. The bride looked lovely in white and the groom wore a brown suit with no tie. No rings were exchanged and the ceremony was very simple yet very beautiful."

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are couple goals!

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski tied the knot in Lake Como in July 2010. Guests included Matt Damon and wife Luciana, Meryl Streep and David Schwimmer. The bride wore a Marchesa Bridal sweetheart draped wedding gown.

Petra Ecclestone and James Stunt

Proud father Bernie Ecclestone splashed out a slice of his considerable fortune to ensure his daughter had the wedding of her dreams. Petra, the apple of the Formula One boss' eye, wed businessman James Stunt in Odescalchi castle, the spectacular 15th-century Italian fort where Katie Holmes married Tom Cruise.

But, despite the estimated £5 million bill, as with any ordinary family, what really made the nuptials so special were the many personal touches provided by friends. Eric Clapton's gift to the young lovers was to serenade them during their first dance as man and wife.

The medieval town of Bracciano came to a standstill as 250 high-profile guests swept in, among them, the Duchess of York and her daughters Eugenie and Beatrice. However, the couple divorced in 2017.

Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster

The couple married in Portofino, Italy, in 2007, and renewed their vows in honour of their tenth wedding anniversary in 2017. While Rod originally wanted the vow renewal to take place at the same venue, they staged the second ceremony at their home in Essex.

Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault

After marrying in a low-key civil ceremony in Paris, actress Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault took their celebrations over to Venice where they celebrated with family and friends at Venice's Opera house La Fenice. Salma Hayek wore a Balenciaga wedding gown designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere.

Theo Walcott and Melanie Slade

Theo Walcott and Melanie Slade on their wedding day on a HELLO! cover

Arsenal footballer Theo Walcott married his childhood sweetheart Melanie Slade in a magical medieval castle in Florence, Italy. At the time the bride told  HELLO! : "That moment when I saw Theo waiting for me at the altar was so overwhelming. Your emotions are all over the place – you're so excited and euphoric because you're marrying this person who you love so much, but there are some nerves there too because it's such a big step."

Matthew Lewis and Angela Jones

Harry Potter  star Matthew Lewis married his partner Angela Jones i n the idyllic setting of Portofino, Italy, in May 2018. The Neville Longbottom actor shared the happy news on social media, joking on Twitter: "Not only did I miss @ArcticMonkeys in LA but they were performing in Italy at the same time we were there and my wife made me get married instead. Fuming."

Stars arrive in Rome for TomKat wedding

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes will likely wed Saturday in a Scientology ceremony held at a 15th-century Italian castle in a lakeside town near Rome, the town’s mayor said Thursday.

The wedding party, along with guests, are then expected to attend a banquet the same day in Rome, Bracciano Mayor Patrizia Riccioni said.

For weeks rumors have focused on Odescalchi Castle in the sleepy town of Bracciano as the likely venue for the celebrity wedding. Riccioni told a news conference Thursday she had met the couple the day before somewhere outside of her town, but she would not say where.

She was coy about other details, too, saying only that she expected the couple to arrive Saturday morning at the castle, which overlooks Lake Bracciano, for what she believed would be a Scientology wedding ceremony, followed by a banquet. She said she expected the couple to return to the Italian capital the same day.

Cruise, 44, star of the “Mission: Impossible” films, and Holmes, 27, have been staying at a luxury hotel near the Spanish Steps in Rome. They were photographed Thursday with their infant daughter, Suri, as they walked to a restaurant in the city.

Those spotted going into the restaurant included “Mission Impossible III” director J.J. Abrams, Brooke Shields and Jennifer Lopez. Lopez’s husband, Marc Anthony, briefly stepped out to smoke a cigarette.

While Riccioni stopped short of confirming the actual date of the wedding, the town’s Web site late Thursday had a picture of Cruise and Holmes under the headline, “The wedding of the year in Bracciano, Saturday, 18 November 2006.”

“I want to thank Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes for choosing this venue for such an important event,” Riccioni said, showing reporters a congratulations card she had for the couple.

“When we met, they seemed to me to be far more normal people than what I believed. I think all this secrecy depends on them wanting to keep their marriage private and intimate,” the mayor said, sparking laughter in the room filled with the journalists who have been trying for days to find clues about how the wedding will be held.

The Hollywood stars’ late-Wednesday visit to Rome City Hall caused a flurry of speculation that they were getting a marriage license, but city hall said Thursday it was only a courtesy visit to the mayor, a big movie buff.

As of midday Thursday, the Bracciano Town Hall was insisting it had not received any request to celebrate the wedding, but preparations for a party appeared to be under way at castle.

The Bracciano Town Hall said, however, that the mayor would not need much time to prepare for a civil ceremony if the necessary papers were presented before Saturday.

To obtain a marriage license, U.S. citizens planning to marry in Italy must present specific documents — including their passports, birth certificates and an affidavit that there is no impediment to their marriage. Because the documents need to be translated into Italian and certified, the process is generally time-consuming.

“If they’re getting married with these rites, it won’t be with a minister from the Rome church, so I would imagine that they would bring their own,” spokesman Fabrizio D’Agostino said.

D’Agostino said an exchange of vows with a Scientology rite was not legally recognized in Italy, and would have to be preceded or followed by a civil union.

How to Plan a Cruise Wedding

Cruise weddings have become all the rage. Thanks to exotic locations ( hello, private beach in Bora Bora) , significantly cheaper costs, and the unmatched beauty of the sea, it’s no wonder brides and grooms are taking notice of this destination wedding option. Of course, there are some unique considerations when it comes to getting married at sea. Here, we’ll delve into all the do’s and don’t’s, so you don’t have to worry about any of the coulda, woulda, shoulda’s when planning your special day aboard a cruise ship or at port!

How to plan a cruise wedding

All-inclusive or diy.

Many cruise lines offer all-inclusive wedding packages, and one of the first big decisions you’ll make (after saying “I do”!) is whether to choose the package route or plan it yourself.

These packages typically include a wedding planner – a huge plus! Your cruise wedding planner will help ensure all the details are set, from the flowers to the more tedious elements, like proper paperwork, customs/port needs, and more. They know exactly how to plan your wedding, from securing the officiant and onboard location, to prepping decorations, bouquets and boutonnieres, ordering the wedding cake, and/or hiring a wedding photographer. As you might imagine, the all-inclusive option is extremely helpful in limiting the amount of stress and work on your end.

That said, many people dream about their wedding their entire lives. When the big day finally arrives, it’s not unusual to want to add your own personal touches, or heck, to control every little detail. You can certainly vow for the DIY option – even creating your own wedding at port, separate from the actual cruise.

There are likely to be more challenges if you do it yourself. But, if you don’t mind digging your heels in, there’s no reason you can’t pull it off! That said, going this route will require flexibility. Bad weather and missed ports are just a couple examples of how things can go awry when planning a cruise wedding on your own.

Either way, we strongly encourage you to at least connect with the event planner on your cruise. At the very least, they’ll be able to provide some tips and tricks to help you pull off your dream day!

Timeline for Planning Your Cruise Wedding

Whether your wedding is an intimate affair of just the bride and groom, or you plan to invite your entire contact list, there’s good reason to know when planning needs to take place.

Most cruise lines require either 30 or 60 days minimum in advance of booking your wedding package. That said, cruises have limited space and can book up quickly, depending on the season and destination. Many cruise lines make their rooms available up to a year and a half (even two years!) before voyage – meaning you and yours might miss out on your favorite pick if you delay.

Concerning guests, you’ll want to let them know about your plans ASAP . If you’re planning your wedding more than a year out, send along save the dates as soon as you know yours. This will allow adequate time for them to not only save money, but plan time-off from work, juggle family schedules, and more. If your engagement period is shorter, send along save the date cards via email or forgo the save the date’s and skip right to your wedding invitations. Either way, there’s no such thing as inviting guests too early!

To the bride(s) and/or groom(s), we recommend you start a wedding website as soon as you’ve decided on a cruise. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the details nailed down just yet. It’s more important to let potential guests know as far in advance as possible what you’re planning. As details come together, the wedding website will become a lifesaver. It’s an easy place to put important details like booking information, deposit deadlines, and other important travel plans. It’ll also save you the stress of continually relaying the same message to each guest.

But hey – got a sudden itch to marry your dreamboat at sea in the next couple of months? Most cruises will do everything they can do help you pull it off in time, especially if your party is small. The faster you’re trying to pull off a cruise wedding, the more attractive an all-inclusive package will be to your planning efforts!

Average Cost of a Cruise Wedding

When considering costs, cruise weddings tend to be way less expensive than land weddings. The average cruise wedding costs a cool $7,000. Keep in mind, that price tag also includes your honeymoon wrapped into a single package.

While a cruise wedding is a great option for the budget-conscious couple, they can be as elaborate as you’d like to make them. Beyond the actual wedding ceremony, you’ll have the option to splurge whenever the ship docks. Snorkeling, exploring port cities, or even renting a private bungalow for the night are all premium add-ons to your package. These luxury options aren’t necessary – but they’ll certainly add to the dreamy adventure!

Marriage Laws & Requirements

Getting married at sea can be a bit complicated, so it’s important to understand your options before booking your cruise, as they’ll vary depending on the cruise line.

Having a legal wedding at sea is somewhat difficult to pull off. Unfortunately, most boat captains can’t legally wed their passengers. For this reason, most ceremonies at sea are symbolic – meaning they’re not legally binding. The couple will need to take care of the legality of their marriage either before or after their cruise to make things official.

That said, many captains can legally marry you in a port destination. This is a bit easier to manage, as – legally speaking – they simply need to be approved by the country in which you’re docked. You will still need to make sure you have a marriage license in place for this to be official. If you decide to go this route, make sure to clear any requirements with your cruise line ahead of time so you’re not left with an unsavory surprise.

Also, don’t let the word “port” throw you off. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be getting married on a literal dock. Depending on your cruise itinerary, your port venue may be a pristine, private beach, beautiful resort venue or other exotic location.

Another option is to get married in port before the ship ever sets sails. If you choose this route, you can invite family and friends to join you for the ceremony, even if they’re not going on the cruise with you.

Other Considerations

Etiquette for Paying for Travel Arrangements

When it comes to who’s responsible for which portions of the cruise cost, etiquette deems that the bride and groom is only responsible for their own lodgings, as well as anyone in their wedding party. Beyond that, it is customary for guests to cover their own costs and fees to attend the cruise. Of course, the bride and groom will cover the actual ceremony and reception.

Keep in mind, as the marital couple-to-be, you can work with your cruise line to snag a great group rate, saving everyone money. This is another reason to start planning early!

Traveling with Wedding Essentials

Naturally, traveling with your wedding gear will make any bride a bit nervous – the dress, the favors, the rings! A few tips to keep things as simple and calm as possible:

  • If flying to your cruise terminal, do not check any essentials at baggage. This includes the dress! You’ll feel better knowing all your must-haves are safe and in sight!
  • Invest in proper packing gear. For the dress, this includes a heavy-duty garment bag. If anything is fragile, go the extra mile and get bubble wrap, packing peanuts, etc. – whatever it takes for your wedding wares to arrive safe and in a single piece!
  • Don’t pack any liquids near important wedding essentials. A busted shampoo bottle can quickly become a gooey nightmare.
  • Bring receipts for any items going through customs, if you can manage it. This can help make things smoother and ensure you don’t experience any hold-ups at customs

Wedding Gifts

Many of your guests will want to give a gift, as is tradition. However, being on a cruise makes this a logistical nightmare!

Cue your wedding website. When you list your registry, be sure to add your address and a simple request that guests mail gifts directly to you, rather than bringing them along for the cruise. You don’t want to endure a cruise with a cabin stuffed with gifts (thoughtful as they may be!) Many folks purchase gifts online anyway, so simply shipping directly to you shouldn’t be too much of an issue for anyone.

Wedding Favors

Whether you’re traveling with 5 guests or 50, you’ll want to keep your wedding favors small and easy to transport. This will make things simpler on you – as if you didn’t have enough luggage to worry about! – but also on your guests, who will certainly be coming home with their bags full of souvenirs.

You might choose to gift smaller items, such as personalized luggage tags, pieces of jewelry or DIY keepsakes. On the other hand, you could gift outside the box – for example, treating your guests to free drinks on the cruise, a group experience at port or purchasing thoughtful souvenirs in bulk once on the island. If choosing the latter option, we recommend you coordinate with the retailer ahead of time and send along a member of the wedding party to pick them up while you enjoy your day!

Choosing a Cruise Line

When it comes to selecting a cruise destination , the world is your oyster. There are dozens of cruise lines traveling the globe every week, many of which offer wedding packages. The pair exchanged vows under an iron gazebo decorated with stunning pink, purple, yellow and white florals. The outdoor space also featured lavish gold tables topped with white candles in glass cases.

Ron Perlman & Allison Dunbar

The actor and his StartUp costar exchanged vows in Italy, she revealed in a June 14, 2022, Instagram post, per Page Six.

"Pulling a Kravis before it was a thing," she joked alongside her video.

Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker

Like many celebs before them, Kardashian and Barker made a weekend out of their May 2022 wedding, hosting a Friday night welcome dinner and Saturday luncheon in Portofino before their lavish yet intimate nuptials at part of the Dolce & Gabbana complex of properties that are all called L'Ulivetta. The newlyweds lingered in town for a few days after the celebrations, part of a mini-honeymoon abroad.

Lady Kitty Spencer & Michael Lewis

The niece of Princess Diana wed millionaire Lewis in front of friends and family at a luxurious ceremony in July 2021 at Villa Aldo Brandini in Frascati, Italy.

The bride wore an intricate Dolce and Gabbana gown for the special occasion; the Victorian-inspired piece features a high neck, puff sleeves and a cinched waist, which she paired with a lengthy train and subtle hoop earrings.

Joining Kitty on her special day were her brothers Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp and Samuel Aitken walked her down the aisle, according to Daily Mail .

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI & DAVID LEE

The couple's June 2019 wedding in Tuscany was a three-day affair, kicking off with cocktails and fireworks and ending with a makeshit nightclub and surprise performance by Lukas Graham, delighting attendees like fellow athletes and friends Pau Gasol and Jesse Palmer and Wozniacki's bridesmaid, Serena Williams .

GIACOMO GIANNIOTTI & NICHOLE G

The Italian-Canadian Grey's Anatomy actor married fiancée Nichole G. in a lavish wedding ceremony on April 28, 2019, in Rome.

In a photo from the nuptials, the newlyweds are seen walking hand-in-hand as they exit the wedding reception with their friends cheering in the background.

"To the bride and groom!" Giacomo captioned the photo on Instagram , written in both English and Italian. "Huge thank you to the incredible team that gave us the most incredible wedding we are forever indebted to you for making this day a dream come true. We are still floating. To all our friends and family who came, we love you and we will never forget you."

The couple said "I do" at Villa Pocci, which sits on a lake and overlooks Castel Gandolfo.

KATIE LEE & RYAN BIEGEL

The Cooking Channel host and her producer beau exchanged vows on the Amalfi Coast on Sept. 1, 2018, with 40 friends and family members present to soak up the sun (after a storm!) and tuck in to a delicious Italian meal.

"It felt so celebratory and special," Lee told PEOPLE . "It was more than I ever could have imagined it to be."

DAVID HASSELHOFF & HAYLEY ROBERTS

The former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff tied the knot with model Hayley Roberts in the southern region of Puglia on July 31, 2018. The couple, who had been engaged for two years, wed in a small ceremony with close friends and family.

DREW SCOTT & LINDA PHAN

More than 300 friends and family members traveled to Italy to toast the Property Brothers star and his bride, who wed on May 12, 2018. "We are still floating on clouds… today couldn't have been more magical," the couple told PEOPLE . "Surrounded by so many loved ones in such a beautiful place was unreal. We are very, very lucky. Friends, family, amazing food, blue skies and being even more in love than ever before - what more could we ask for?"

MATTHEW LEWIS & ANGELA JONES

The Harry Potter star got hitched in an undisclosed location in Italy (on an undisclosed date!), announcing the news in a cheeky May 2018 tweet. "Not only did I miss @ArcticMonkeys in LA but they were performing in Italy at the same time we were there and my wife made me get married instead. Fuming," Lewis joked alongside a stunning photo of the two from their wedding. He met Jones, an American who worked at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, in 2016.

KATE UPTON & JUSTIN VERLANDER

Days after the Houston Astros pitcher's big 2017 World Series win, he said "I do" to the supermodel in an outdoor ceremony in Italy. Upton donned a lace white gown with long veil, while her groom opted for a traditional tux. "I feel so lucky that I got to marry my best friend!!" she tweeted after the ceremony.

LIZZY CAPLAN & TOM RILEY

The Masters of Sex and Mean Girls star married British actor and producer Riley in Italy over Labor Day weekend in 2017, PEOPLE confirmed. "This one seems fertile," Riley posted on Instagram, along with a black-and-white photo of the newlyweds sitting on the ground laughing while at their wedding. "She shall make a satisfactory first wife."

JESSICA CHASTAIN & GIAN LUCA PASSI DE PREPOSULO

On June 10, 2017, the Oscar nominee wed her love of four years in the northern Italian city of Treviso at the Passi de Preposulo family estate Villa Tiepolo Passi. A-list guests like Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt were on hand for the festivities, which included a Friday night welcome dinner in Venice.

GEORGE CLOONEY & AMAL ALAMUDDIN

Auguri , George and Amal! The couple exchanged vows in an intimate Venice ceremony on Sept. 27, 2014, about one year after they were first photographed together.

NEIL PATRICK HARRIS & DAVID BURTKA

Harris and Burtka, together for 10 years, pulled out all the stops for their Sept. 6, 2014, nuptials . Matching Tom Ford tuxedos and a performance from Elton John were the highlights of the intimate event, which also included two other stars: their then-3½-year-old twins Harper and Gideon. Following the celebration, Harris Tweeted. , "Yup, we put the 'n' and 'd' in 'husband.'"

KIM KARDASHIAN & KANYE WEST

That's amore ! In an epic weekend that spanned from Paris to Florence, Kardashian and West tied the knot in May 2014 at Italy's Forte di Belvedere , a 16th century fortress known for its sweeping panoramas and the fabulous contemporary art exhibitions it hosts. After a pre-wedding party in Versailles, France, the couple flew their 200 guests across the border for a grand Italian celebration - no surprise considering their elaborate engagement at San Francisco's AT&T Park in October 2013. The couple chose the Italian city for a pretty personal reason: It's where they conceived daughter North.

JOHN LEGEND & CHRISSY TEIGEN

It took them seven years, but singer Legend and model Teigen finally made it down the aisle in September 2013 , exchanging "I dos" in front of family and friends in Lake Como, Italy. The bride wore three different Vera Wang gowns throughout the night, and was treated to a sweet serenade by her new husband during the reception, which featured one pretty delicious cake .

GIULIANA & BILL RANCIC

If they vowed to love each other through sickness and in health, it worked. In 2007, the two jetted to the island of Capri to marry in a traditional Catholic ceremony. The newlyweds then shuttled their 190 guests to a piazza where Neapolitan dancers made merry on the way to the reception.

TOM CRUISE & KATIE HOLMES

It ended in divorce but began with a fairy tale. In November 2006, Cruise and Holmes capped off their whirlwind romance (motorcycle rides! couch jumping! Suri!) with a wedding that captivated Italy and the world. The couple married in a sunset ceremony at Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano as famous guests like Victoria Beckham , Jennifer Lopez and Will Smith looked on.

EMILY BLUNT & JOHN KRASINSKI

After falling in love at first sight , then dating for two years, Blunt and Krasinski made it official in July 2010 - Italian style - with a private ceremony in Como. No surprise here: Krasinski's friend and director George Clooney has long kept an estate on Lake Como, and was one of the guests at the nuptials.

BEVERLEY MITCHELL & MICHAEL CAMERON

The town of Ravello set the stage for 7th Heaven star Mitchell, who married accountant Cameron there in 2008. In the actress's bridal party was one Jessica Biel , who along with now-husband Justin Timberlake , stayed at a $2,800-a-night villa in Positano during the festivities.

JESSICA BIEL & JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

Four years after her pal Mitchell's destination wedding, Biel and Timberlake followed suit with their own Italian nuptials in 2008. "It's great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends," the couple told PEOPLE exclusively.

SOFIA COPPOLA & THOMAS MARS

Swoon: When Coppola wed Phoenix frontman Mars in an August 2011 civil ceremony, the couple traveled to her grandparents' hometown of Bernalda and said "I do" in the garden at the Palazzo Margherita, a historical building owned by her father, Francis Ford Coppola. The wedding meal was strictly Italian: cheeses, figs, pasta - and, of course, wine.

CAT DEELEY & PATRICK KIELTY

When in Rome! Deeley and Irish comedian Kielty honored their love with an intimate (and rose-strewn) ceremony at a chapel in the Italian capital in September 2012.

PETRA ECCLESTONE & JAMES STUNT

There were fireworks - literally! - over Formula One heiress Ecclestone's ultra-lavish August 2011 Roman celebration . The British socialite (here, with her father) exchanged vows with businessman Stunt at Castello Orsini-Odescalchi (where Tom and Katie wed) and entertained her high society guests - including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie - with the help of Eric Clapton and the Black Eyed Peas.

MELISSA JOAN HART & MARK WILKERSON

Though a power outage threatened to foil Hart's 2003 nuptials in Florence to musician Wilkerson, the veteran performer kept her cool - and even found time for a nap before the ceremony, which took place in a villa that reminded Hart's wedding planner of Versailles.

CLAIRE FORLANI & DOUGRAY SCOTT

For the busy couple, getting married in the small village of Pievebovigliana "was like a vacation." Actors Forlani and Scott invited more than 100 guests to join them as they tied the knot in 2007, and to dine with them on dishes prepared by Forlani's Italian father, Pier.

SALMA HAYEK & FRANÇOIS-HENRI PINAULT

Because a civil ceremony on Valentine's Day in Paris just wouldn't do, Hayek and French billionaire Pinault hosted a spectacular wedding weekend in Venice, complete with a masked ball, in April 2009. Along with Charlize Theron , Penélope Cruz , Bono and more, the happy couple celebrated with "one magical moment after another."

You Can Get Married on a Cruise Ship — Here's How to Plan Your Nautical Wedding

Here's what you need to know about tying the knot at sea.

Wedding Packages and Services

Planning the ceremony and reception, guest accommodations and activities, tips for planning a cruise wedding.

Danevski/Getty Images

If you and your future spouse love to set sail and explore new locales, getting married at sea may be the perfect option for your wedding — and it comes with plenty of built-in benefits and amenities. What’s more, explains T+L A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel president Rob Clabbers, “The advantage of a wedding on a ship is that a lot of amenities and facilities are available — albeit it an extra charge in some cases: beautiful spaces, photographers, musicians, DJs, flowers, wedding assistants, bars and restaurants, the option to arrange a separate meal/buffet for your guests, a salon and spa to get ready for a ceremony, and, of course, a ‘built-in’ honeymoon.” Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate elopement or a larger celebration, we tapped several experts to provide insight on everything you need to know about cruise weddings, including the costs, the logistics, accommodations and amenities, and more.

What to Know

kieferpix/Getty Images

Once you’ve officially decided to say “I do” at sea, there are several factors to keep in mind. “At a minimum,” says Farah Barhorst, a director at Holland America Line , “couples should know where, when, and how they want to get married, in addition to the number of guests they would like in attendance.” She notes that many cruise lines put limits on how many visitors can board the ship who aren't sailing its full itinerary, so knowing how many guests plan to join you for your wedding only is crucial. Of course, couples should also consider their desired wedding location as, per the pro, “guest capacity is also limited based on the destination or port.”

As Clabbers explains, you also need to consider the laws of both the country where you'll be located when you get married and the country that runs your ship. “Many cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas, Bermuda, or Malta,” Clabbers notes, meaning “the laws of [that] specific country would apply to any ceremonies performed on board once the ship is in international waters.” There may then be limits on where same-sex ceremonies can take place. “Since the Bahamas and Bermuda, for example, don’t recognize same-sex marriage, same-sex couples can’t get legally married at sea on ships registered in those countries. They could potentially get married while in port in the U.S.A. or certain places in Europe,” he says.

For these and other reasons, Keith Willard , a wedding planner specializing in destination weddings, stresses the importance of planning ahead. "The first thing that many overlook is the marriage certificate itself," he says. "The easiest thing to do is to get a marriage license within 60 days of your wedding and bring it with you.” Stacey Johnston , a travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, echoes these sentiments, explaining that “you will need to arrange for the marriage license ahead of your cruise from the port or the departure location depending on where you are getting married.”

To avoid mishaps with locations and licenses, some couples choose to have a wedding celebration on a cruise but get legally married elsewhere. On a Holland America Line ship, for instance, “The captain can perform a ‘symbolic’ ceremony that is not legally binding,” says Barhorst. If you want the wedding-at-sea experience with fewer logistical headaches, a compromise like this may be for you.

Nadtochiy/Getty Images

According to Clabbers, “Many cruise lines that offer weddings will provide a range of packages to choose from, with ceremonies from two to over 100 attendees that may include the services from the officiant, a celebration venue, recorded or live music, a cake, Champagne or other beverages for guests, a dinner for the wedding couple, and other extras.” To provide to-be-weds with a better idea of what to expect, we’ve compiled a few packages from several cruise lines.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line currently offers a handful of wedding packages , including the Symbolic at Sea Package, which, per Barhorst, includes a non-legal ceremony performed by the captain or an officer; coordination by both onboard and pre-cruise wedding coordinators; recorded ceremony music; a keepsake wedding certificate; basic photography service, including one 8” x 10” photo of choice and a commemorative wedding album; sparkling wine; a nine-inch wedding cake; and a bridal bouquet with a dozen roses and a matching groom’s boutonniere. The Anchors Away Package includes all of the above but with a legal ceremony (led by a non-denominational officiant), as well as priority check-in for the couple during embarkation. Lastly, couples craving a true destination wedding can book the Ashore Package, which “lets couples officially tie the knot on a beach, garden, or glacier location,” says Barhorst. “A seasonal bridal bouquet and boutonniere will be provided in addition to a pre-cruise and ashore wedding coordinator to ensure all runs smoothly.”

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises offers three distinct packages to choose from via its Princess Perfect Weddings department. The Perfect Pair Package includes the couple and up to two guests, while the ceremony-only package, aptly named Timeless Ceremony at Sea, includes the couple and up to eight guests. Lastly, the Timeless Wedding at Sea package is the line's most elaborate. It comes with a ceremony and a reception for the couple and up to 18 guests, plus extras like salon services and specialty dining reservations for the bride and groom. All three Princess packages include fresh florals, photography, and an indoor or outdoor ceremony officiated by the ship’s captain.

Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea launched in April 2022 and offers warm-weather sailings from Palm Beach and Tampa. It has three aptly named wedding packages : Paradise, Elation, and Bliss. Paradise is the most extravagant, offering live music, full photography services, and an upgraded venue complete with panoramic views. Elation is the mid-range option, with a reception dinner, DJ services, and ceremony photography, and Bliss serves as the line’s basic package for intimate soirees. At all three levels, couples enjoy perks like a personal wedding coordinator, an officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a bridal bouquet and matching boutonniere, priority check-in, dinner at the onboard steakhouse, and a wedding cake.

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship ocean line has four wedding packages , including the Vows at Sea Package, which allows couples to choose from an array of onboard venues and includes dinner for two at a specialty restaurant, a bottle of bubbly, special stateroom decor, and more. With the Embark on Romance Package, you can invite sailing and non-sailing guests to watch you tie the knot with a ceremony on embarkation day, which includes many of the aforementioned amenities plus priority check-in for the couple. The smallest at-sea package, Intimately Yours, includes a ceremony for the couple and up to 10 guests, while the Destinations I Do package is ideal for those who want a great on-land backdrop for their wedding. With Destinations I Do, couples get married either on board or on land while the ship is in port; transportation to and from the venue is included if you choose the on-land option.

Carnival Cruise Line

Another mega-ship ocean line, Carnival offers three wedding packages . The Signature Ceremony is the line's smallest but still offers plenty of perks: a ceremony for up to 10 guests (including the couple), pre-recorded ceremony music, a pre-cruise wedding planner, priority embarkation assistance, a local officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a cake, a sparkling wine toast, photography (plus a canvas print), shipboard decor, and a honeymoon dinner for the newlyweds. Service charges, which include gratuities, are also covered. Those looking to host an onboard reception following the ceremony can book the It’s a Celebration! package for a minimum of 20 guests, including the couple. Alternatively, say “I do” off the ship by booking the Love Ashore package, where couples can tie the knot in a dreamy beach or garden ceremony. For extra amenities, add on the Diamond Enhancement Package, which comes with perks like a mimosa-fueled breakfast, chocolate-covered strawberries delivered to the couple’s stateroom, a bottle of bubbly, a 30-minute couples massage, and more.

Disney Cruise Line

For a fairy-tale-worthy wedding at sea, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. Their standard cruise ceremony package includes up to 16 guests (excluding the couple), while food and drink services, florals, and entertainment can all be added on for an extra cost. Couples can also choose to get married off the ship at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. For more information, including specific venue options, visit the Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons website .

As noted above, many cruise lines offer wedding coordinators to ensure everything runs smoothly so that you and your soon-to-be spouse can sit back, relax, and soak up the blissful, celebratory vibes. In terms of what to expect from the ceremony and what kind of venues are available, “There can be quite a variety,” says Clabbers. For example, “Some ships have a chapel or space dedicated to weddings and ceremonies; others use a lounge, restaurant, or private room.” Again, since this will all vary by the cruise line and/or the specific package you pick, your best bet is to do your research by combing through the wedding package offerings online or calling the company directly.

The same thing goes for receptions, explains Allison DePesa , a travel advisor with Marvelous Mouse Travels. For example, “You could opt for a dinner in a specialty restaurant or something more opulent in a main dining room, which would offer more space for guests and a DJ.” Willard also urges to-be-weds to remember that the time of their onboard reception will likely be “based on what the cruise line has available, which means the times may be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., or even 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.” He explains, “A traditional five-hour event with an hour ceremony on the cruise between the hours of 5 p.m. and midnight is almost never done for groups larger than 20 people.”

Good news: Couples getting married on a cruise are privy to discounts and other perks. According to DePesa, “With as few as eight cabins, you qualify as a group with most cruise lines. You'll receive discounted rates, onboard credits, cocktail parties, etc., depending on the number of staterooms booked.” Barhorst notes that similar perks apply on Holland America, explaining that, if a couple books a group of eight staterooms for their wedding crew, they're “eligible to receive a stateroom category upgrade up to Suite level, completely complimentary.”

According to Johnston, when setting up your room block, it’s a good idea to offer several category options — she recommends reserving balcony, oceanview, and interior staterooms — “since your wedding guests may have a variety of budgetary ranges.” Also, says Willard, “Unlike a hotel room block, your cruise rate can fluctuate for your guests, so it is important to book early” since “the earlier you book, typically the better the price point.” Be sure to keep an eye on cut-off dates, though. Some cruise lines will deactivate contracted room-block rates and links a set time before the sailing (90 days, for instance), meaning guests booking after that point would be on their own to find a stateroom.

When it comes to onboard activities and programming, Willard says that “there are opportunities at every turn for shared group experiences.” For example, “Dining in the main dining hall can be for groups [of] up to 20 people per table," while groups of 30 or more may even be able to book whole private sections of the dining room. On the flip side, cruising is also great because everyone in the group — or, in this case, the wedding party — can do their own thing without being tied to a specific schedule. So, while some guests might prefer to lounge by the pool or relax in the spa, others may take advantage of other onboard amenities, like an escape room, laser tag, waterslides, and more, depending on the specific line and ship.

While standard wedding packages will vary depending on the cruise line and number of guests, Clabbers says they can “range from anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 and up,” and most of the advisors we spoke to concurred.

That said, budget-conscious couples can find a few under-$2,000 options, including the aforementioned Signature Ceremony package on Carnival and the Symbolic at Sea package on Holland America Line, both of which clock in at $1,800. Also — at least on Holland America Line — “seasonal price surcharges of $100 to $200 should also be taken into account during peak nuptial times and holidays, including Christmas Day, Valentine's Day, and the beginning of summer,” says Barhorst. Similarly, while some purposely intimate packages include only a small number of guests, extra guests can sometimes be added at a per-person price. Be sure to inquire about fees, too, particularly for on-shore events.

When budgeting for your cruise wedding, remember that “the cost of legal documentations and permits is extra and needs to be planned far in advance — at least 90 days but ideally more,” explains Clabbers. Sue Allen, a travel consultant at Destination Weddings Travel Group & Celebration Travel , expressed similar sentiments and noted that “legal weddings have an additional fee” compared to symbolic (or non-legal) ones.

Per the pro, “Marriage license fees for in-destination weddings can range from $200 to $700,” while a shipboard maritime license fee is around $900. Allen also cautions couples to be wary of non-refundable deposits. While the initial cruise price may be lower, “if something comes up and you are not able to travel, you lose your deposit or pay a fee to change your travel dates.” With that being said, it’s always a good idea to purchase cruise insurance .

Lastly, DePesa urges couples to keep in mind that “the wedding does not include the fare for the actual cruise.” In fact, the cruise fare(s) can vary drastically depending on the time of year, length of itinerary, and line. If you’re not sailing on a truly all-inclusive line, you and your guests can expect to pay extra for features such as Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and alcoholic beverages. You’ll also, of course, need to factor in airfare if you’re flying to the embarkation/disembarkation port(s).

Book early and plan ahead.

To secure the best prices for your stateroom block, Johnston recommends planning as early as possible. Willard agrees, telling T+L that cost-conscious couples should create their block at least a year out at minimum. Plus, he says, "Most of the cruise lines will provide incentives, as well.”

Also, as part of the planning process, DePesa advises couples to “get an idea of your guest list, get a sense of who can travel with you, what budgets are like, and what time of year that works best” to ensure you’re selecting a sailing that suits both your and your loved ones’ needs, preferences, and desires.

Keep an open mind and trust your coordinator.

“When planning a wedding at sea, a good practice would be to keep an open mind,” explains Barhorst. This, of course, goes hand-in-hand with putting your trust in the cruise wedding planner. That way, she says, “the less stressful (and easier) it will be for [the couple] to enjoy their time together during the sailing.”

Familiarize yourself with the legalities.

As previously mentioned, the legalities and specifics of a cruise wedding vary greatly depending on where the ship is registered, the port(s) of call, and more. With that in mind, DePesa recommends couples take the time to do some digging and understand the legal requirements to determine “if a symbolic ceremony might just make things easier.”

Decide if a cruise wedding is really for you.

Before going full speed ahead and booking a cruise wedding, it’s crucial to weigh the pros and cons to determine if these types of nuptials are truly what you want. What’s more, says Willard, “A cruise wedding isn't about you specifically outside of the ceremony itself.” Rather, “It's about the shared experience, and your guests may decide that there is something more interesting [to do] on one of the other days.” He also cautions that cruise weddings can mean fewer guests RSVPing yes due to factors like time commitment, budget restraints, and so on.

If you do decide to move forward with a cruise wedding, Barhorst says that “managing the wedding parties’ expectations is also advised, as the structure of cruise weddings differs from the traditional ceremony,”

15 Things You Need to Know When Planning a Cruise Wedding

By Carnival Cruise Line

Ocean breezes carry romance through the air when you have your wedding on a cruise. Whether the ceremony is onboard, at an exotic beach or in a garden, wedding cruises combine your love for each other with your love for travel in beautiful settings. Carnival Cruises will help you plan every detail to create memories that last a lifetime. Here’s what you should know when planning your cruise wedding.

1. Your Wedding Can Be in Port or at a Destination Venue

A legal marriage falls under the rules of a country, so your ceremony won’t be on the open seas. Having it onboard a ship at your home port before the cruise sails lets you pick the clergy and invite guests who can’t join you on the cruise. You can also have a shipboard wedding at another port, or choose a destination beach or resort venue to add the exotic scenery of Mexico , the Caribbean , The Bahamas , or Hawaii to your photos.

2. Make Sure Your Marriage Is Legal

You need a marriage license wherever your ceremony is held. Your wedding coordinator will help you understand the requirements at the port where the ceremony will take place, but you need to take care of the details.

3. Pick a Ship That Suits Your Style

Every cruise ship has its own personality! Look for one that matches your own style, with the dining, entertaining and amenity options you’ll enjoy on your honeymoon. Carnival cruise ships have great amenities that you and all your guests will enjoy.

4. Consider Booking Early

Cruise weddings are popular, so make sure you book early to avoid a sold out sailing and be mindful of possible holiday surcharges. You’ll want to consider the weather and the season when you plan your wedding. A good idea is to arrive to the port a day early to ensure that everything is in order and to enjoy the city!

5. Let Your Guests Know Well in Advance

You don’t need to send out the invitations as soon as you book your cruise, but do let your guests know in advance so they can make arrangements to take time off work.

6. Set Up a Wedding Registry

Set up a wedding website and honeymoon registry where you can share information with your guests so they can help create the perfect honeymoon experience as you start your life together.

7. Pick a Good Cruise Length

Pick a cruise itinerary that doesn’t rush your introduction to married life but isn’t too long or too expensive for your guests. A four- to seven-day cruise gives time for the ceremony and doesn’t require too much of their vacation time.

8. Group Rates Make Cruise Weddings Affordable

Book accommodations as a group so that your wedding guests get a better rate . You can even plan group shore excursions. This allows you to turn your wedding into an affordable vacation for your friends and family!

9. Make Planning Easy With a Comprehensive Package

Carnival takes the stress out of planning your wedding with a comprehensive package . A wedding planner helps you right from the start, and you’ll have a wedding coordinator on the big day. Packages include everything from the officiant to streamers and cake.

10. Pick a Package That Matches Your Style and Budget

Carnival’s wedding packages offer different inclusions, so you can match your package to your dreams. Choose an elegant sit-down reception, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, or join your guests at the shipboard buffet. Different tiers allow you to choose your favorite menu selections. You can also enhance your wedding package with flowers, favors, entertainment and other personal touches.

11. Dress for the Occasion

Shipboard life is largely casual, but you’ll still want to dress up for your ceremony. The bride and her attendants should make sure their dresses are easy to get into, especially if your ceremony will be in the home port before sailing. For the guys, it’s easy to look sharp without packing a tux; onboard formalwear rentals can have suits ready in their rooms when they arrive.

12. Capture Memories with a Wedding Photographer

Your cruise ship can supply a professional photographer to take photo and video and create beautiful keepsake albums. Prints will be ready before you head home, so there’s no wait to start enjoying the memories!

13. Enjoy Family Togetherness and Alone Time

Cruise weddings where your guests sail with you can offer a perfect mix of time together and time apart. On a big ship, there’s so much to do everyone will always have an activity to enjoy.

14. It Isn’t Just for Newlyweds

Cruises are a great way to bring together friends and family while you renew your vows, too!

15. Relax and Enjoy Your New Life Together

Once the ceremony’s over, so is the stress. Enjoy the ship’s facilities and shore excursions, and make sure to find quiet corners on the deck so you can simply enjoy being together as a newly married couple!

Cruise Weddings: All You Need To Know

Destination weddings have long been a romantic and thrilling way to enjoy the fun of travel while starting married life. In recent years, these weddings and other romantic getaways have boomed in demand, especially since people are using these occasions to make time with loved ones rather than waiting for major milestones to go on a big trip. Travel Weekly reports that the romance travel trend is set to continue from 2023 into 2024, considering that the destination wedding market grew from $21.3 billion in 2022 to $28.3 billion in 2023. But aside from hopping on a plane and jet-setting to a new place to get married, some are exploring the novelty and fun of at-sea weddings on cruise ships.

A cruise wedding can be a romantic and unique way to begin your married life. You can enjoy stunning ocean views or visit new destinations while you tie the knot. Cruises can also provide all the essentials for a wedding, such as a dedicated venue, food and drink, overnight accommodations, and other facilities. And with a diverse array of itineraries available across cruise lines, you can choose where to go and have a built-in honeymoon ready to go once you’ve exchanged vows. However, a cruise wedding comes with a lot of considerations you will need to factor in when planning. From choosing a cruise line and package to the number of guests you’ll be bringing, you’ll have to make smart and careful choices for smooth sailing. This guide to cruise weddings can help you navigate the planning process before you embark on a new journey:

Perks of a cruise wedding

Cruise weddings provide a uniquely beautiful and memorable setting and experience for your wedding. Getting married at sea or at a port of call can make for an incredible moment for you, your spouse, and your guests to be celebrated and reminisced for years to come. While cruises may not provide the same flexibility as regular wedding venues, they don’t skimp out on quality. Many cruises offer beautiful indoor or outdoor ceremony locations. You can exchange vows with the ocean as your backdrop or explore elegant indoor venues. The Grand Hall in the Disney Wish ship from Disney Cruise Line showcases how grand these spots can be. The venue comes with a sweeping staircase, a starry chandelier, and a luxurious color palette, which all make for a beautiful wedding environment and a themed one if that’s something on the table for your ceremony. You might not find these venues and views anywhere else either, making it a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Cruise lines that allow weddings also pull out all the stops when it comes to organizing your big day. Wedding packages help take care of the details and help you figure out the most affordable option that aligns with your vision. This can make planning much easier, as things like the ceremony, venue, dining, and staff and vendors are already included in the package, giving you less to worry about when planning your wedding. The fun doesn’t have to stop at your ceremony, either. Cruise weddings also provide other facilities and amenities to make the experience more exciting. You and your guests can enjoy relaxing in the spa, take a dip in the pool, go shopping, and explore other onboard activities. You can do all that while being able to travel to new destinations, combining your nuptials and honeymoon into one trip.

Planning your dream cruise wedding

One of the first things on your planning checklist should be to check which cruise lines allow weddings. The most beneficial option would be to find a cruise line that offers wedding packages that align with your preferences and needs. Cruise lines like Princess Cruises are experienced with these romantic occasions and offer great value packages for any proposal, wedding ceremony, and vow renewal vision to be realized, from intimate gatherings to grand celebrations. These wedding packages include a range of essential services and offerings for a traditional ceremony, such as a captain-led ceremony, decorations, photography, a wedding cake and toast, and other perks like live music, premium dining, and bridal hair and makeup. Different cruise lines, like Carnival Cruise Line , also offer their own packages with varying benefits for newlyweds.

Not all cruises offer the same wedding benefits or even allow them, even popular names in the business. Though a newcomer to the scene and gaining much popularity and acclaim, cruise line Explora Journeys doesn’t permit weddings as their onboard officers aren’t legally allowed to officiate. The same reason goes for Viking Cruises, which is famous for destination-focused offerings. You may have certain cruise lines you want to try, but it helps to prioritize booking a cruise that allows weddings, can accommodate your guests whether they’ll sail with you or not, and will help you with any logistical or legal requirements.

Things to keep in mind

Cruise weddings can be exciting, but there are considerations to mull over before booking. Legality is a significant factor, and it can be a challenge to work out how to have a legally binding wedding or how to get a marriage license. These can differ depending on your cruise line, where they’re registered, and where you’re getting married. It can also depend on whether your wedding is in port or at sea. Fortunately, cruise lines will help you organize things like finding an officiant for the wedding or arranging your marriage license. Some cruises may also include legal ceremonies in their wedding packages, such as one officiated by the captain or performed by a local officiant in port. You should also research any other paperwork requirements to obtain or fill out before sailing.

Wedding packages may also be convenient, but they’re often limited in their selections and don’t offer much flexibility. There won’t be much room to negotiate about decor, flowers, the number of guests, and other wedding elements. You can customize your wedding ceremony further and enjoy additional perks with more packages that include more personalized touches, but you also have to consider your budget as they’re more expensive. But if you’re willing to let the cruise line take the reins in favor of a unique moment, you can enjoy a stress-free, romantic cruise wedding, no matter the package.

Thinking of a cruise honeymoon?

Weddings aren’t the only way to celebrate your love on a cruise. If you’re really looking to book a dream cruise line but don’t offer wedding packages or permit ceremonies, you can enjoy a cruise honeymoon and travel in style. You can focus more on the travel aspect of cruising instead of the wedding, allowing you to fully take advantage of the ship’s facilities, amenities, and activities. Explora Journeys may not offer weddings, but they can provide you with an immersive and luxurious travel experience with an in-suite welcome bottle of champagne, diverse culinary choices, and a rejuvenating spa experience. You can connect with your spouse as you travel to new horizons, with tours taking you to the Red Sea & Arabian Peninsula or the Mediterranean & Western Europe. These cruise lines can still provide a romantic getaway, even if you don’t get married on the ship. Like with any other regular honeymoon, you’ll still need to do your planning and research.
