As part of the reorganization Adventure Center will cease trading as a brand effective August 1st, 2014. This will allow additional customer focus and investment on Intrepid Travel , Peregrine , Geckos Adventures and Exodus which carry globally in excess of 200,000 passengers. The restructure will see the closure of the Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary offices and the growth of the central office in Toronto. Additionally the group has launched a new online business focused on all things adventure and aptly named: adventure.com .

“We have been focusing on simplifying our adventure travel product offering and increasing efficiencies to better align with the changing needs of our customers,” said Steven Larkin, President of the Intrepid Group. “These changes will effectively allow us to work closer with agents and direct customers like never before.”

With the re-structuring of PEAK Adventure Travel in Canada there will be a renewed focus on the following brands in the market: Intrepid Travel, Peregrine, Geckos Adventures and Exodus. Customers will be able to directly interact with a Canadian based call centre for each brand and travel agent partners will be supported by expanded outside sales and marketing teams.

“We have seen a great deal of support from North American agents to date,” said Andrew Appleyard, International Sales Manager for Exodus. “We look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead to accelerate growth for our brands in the market.”

The restructuring of the Canadian and North American industry business will create a stronger unified organization that can increase investment in exciting new opportunities as the company steps into 2015 and beyond. There are no changes to the existing Intrepid Travel business in Petaluma, CA which focuses on Intrepid Group product to the direct US customer.

A Raft Guide’s Journey on Shoulder Surgery and Rehabilitation

by Lauren Stephenson | Dec 30, 2020

I remember how nervous I was on my first day of guide school. I had already invested so much time and money into something in which I had no clue. The thrill of the unknown made me feel more alive than ever. From the moment I set foot in the raft I felt this immense feeling of satisfaction and adrenaline which instantly had me addicted.

As a traveler who recently booked a trekking trip with this company, I found the overall experience to be satisfactory. The booking process was smooth and the website was easy to navigate. However, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the communication leading up to the trip. It felt a bit unorganized, and I had to follow up multiple times to confirm details. The actual trek itself was enjoyable, and the guides were knowledgeable and friendly. I appreciated the effort put into ensuring our safety and comfort. However, I did feel that some aspects of the itinerary could have been better coordinated. Overall, it was an average experience, but there is certainly room for improvement in terms of pre-trip communication and attention to detail.

Peak season vs off-season travel: when should you take your next adventure vacation?

Peak season travel brings the best conditions but the biggest crowds – is off-season the way to go?

Three backpackers at the airport

Are you dreaming of your next adventure vacation but wondering how you can save money, beat the crowds or find the perfect campsite? Adventure travel is on the rise, with more and more of us skipping cocktails at the beach and packing our trail running shoes or climbing shoes for a different type of vacation. But when is the best time to go?

Peak season travel, which is usually during school holidays and all winter for ski trips, often means that you’ll have the most options for activities and the best weather for what you want to do – but there’s a higher price to pay and plenty of others with the same idea.

Savvy travelers swear by off-season travel – which typically means spring and fall in mountain areas popular for adventure vacations – citing lower fares and less congested trails as great reasons to risk the possibility of inclement weather. But what if you spend your whole climbing holiday waiting for the rain to let up?

The truth is, there are huge advantages and downsides to both, but not knowing what to expect can lead to some serious disappointment. In this article, we take a look at peak season vs off-season travel to help you find the best time to explore your next route.

Travelers At Baggage Claim

Peak season vs off-season travel: prices

Almost across the board, if you travel during peak season, you’re going to foot a higher bill. Airline and car rental companies and raise flight prices during the school holidays, hotels raise room rates and while restaurants and tour guides might not technically plump their prices, you’re not likely to find deals or discounts when they have an opportunity to make hay, and that’s fair enough.

Travel during the off-season, however, and you’re far more likely to find deals on flights and accommodation, while restaurants might be offering specials to get people in the door and activities and tourist attractions might even have deals. In short, you’ll pay less for off-season travel, and that's a huge bonus but as you’ve probably guessed, there’s more to the story, so keep reading.

Peak season vs off-season travel: lodging and flights

Since it’s almost always cheaper, you might think that off-season travel is the clear way to go, but while it’s true that you can save money on flights, you might also have a harder time finding convenient ones.

Advnture Newsletter

All the latest inspiration, tips and guides to help you plan your next Advnture!

I traveled to Corsica , an island off the southwest coast of France, this past spring to do some mountain biking and a via ferrata . The weather was still mild and made it perfect for these types of activities, but the getting there? That was a different story.

Because Corsica’s peak season is during the summer months, airlines cut back on flights during the rest of the year and my only options were to take three separate flights to get to the island or spend a night in Paris en route. I was meeting a group of around 20 others, all flying from different parts of Europe, and all seemed to have had a longer and more arduous journey than me when they arrived. Had we traveled a couple of months later, many of us would have been looking at direct flights.

Accommodation availability is also another story, depending on where you’re going. For places where accommodation is open year-round, you’ll find that a hotel room or apartment rental is much easier to book and far cheaper during off-season travel.

However, in places where off-season is extremely quiet and weather conditions inhospitable – such as some National Parks and alpine huts – you could find that some folk have simply shut up shop altogether and there isn’t a bed for the night. Of course, if your idea of adventure travel is pitching a tent in a place where wild camping is allowed, then you don’t need to worry about rooms, rates or whether you'll need a late checkout.

tent and mountains

Peak season vs off-season travel: crowds

One area where off-season travel offers a clear advantage over peak season is crowds. Peak season means peak visitorship and unless you’re expert at getting off the beaten path, it means that trails and climbing routes will be congested and bike rentals and guides booked up in advance, so it’s smart to plan ahead.

The real beauty of travel in the off-season, especially if you like empty spaces, is that everything is quieter. You’re more likely to have hiking trails and campsites all to yourself and shouldn’t run into any issues renting gear. That said, hotels and restaurants can feel a little depressing when they’re running on a skeleton crew and you’re the only person there, so there’s still a downside.

Early in the morning before the crowds arrived, a group of hikers look at the Half Dome cable section in Yosemite National Park

Peak season vs off-season travel: activities

Getting to a world-class destination on the cheap and bagging yourself a four-star hotel room at bargain basement prices certainly sounds like living your best life, but before you click on that Book Now button, have a think about what it is that you actually want to do once you get there.

Just because a destination is known for a certain activity doesn't mean you can do it year round. Bocas del Toro in Panama is a world-famous surf spot, but visit in the fall and you might find the sea is as flat as a pancake. The cables to help you climb Yosemite's famous Half Dome come down in October until Memorial Day and in Vail, Colorado , where I used to live, the hiking trails are either impassable due to snow or a total mud bath in the spring.

If you have your heart set on hiking, check that the trail conditions are favorable outside of summer, or at the very least, upgrade your hiking boots . Want to get some late-season turns in on the slopes? Be sure you’re visiting a snow-sure ski resort and book last minute. Be aware that guides might spend their off-season in some other exotic locale and some areas and attractions may be off-limits during quiet periods, so make sure you can do the things you really want to do – or have the right gear for your second choice.

Peak season vs off-season travel: weather

Some years ago, my friend Rachel had a hiking trip to Thailand planned for the fall. She spent months saving, planning and looking forward to it but when she arrived, she discovered it was still monsoon season. It rained non-stop, she couldn’t do any of the activities she hoped to and she cried.

While it’s certainly true that when it comes to adventure travel, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong gear, the weather can make a real difference to how much you enjoy your trip. Yellowstone National Park is magical in the winter, but only if you love winter sports and are backcountry-savvy. Hiking in the rain might be no problem, but you need a waterproof jacket and rain pants .

Put it this way: when a destination has a peak season, it’s usually because the conditions are favorable for what people generally want to do. Winter is peak season for northern hemisphere ski resorts because it brings snow, while summer means dry trails for hikers and trail runners.

If you’re booking your trip based on activities, research what the weather is generally like at the time you’ll be going and make sure it’s supportive of your goals, and that you pack the right gear. And remember, off-seasons like spring and fall can be the perfect time to explore desert climates before they get too hot.

person packing big rucksack for hiking

Peak season vs off-season travel: the verdict

So do you take your adventure vacation during the busy peak season and risk the crowds and high prices, or wait until the off-season? It all depends on how attached you are to doing certain activities.

There are tons of advantages to off-season travel such as lower prices, more lodging options and fewer people on the trails, but the weather might not play ball and you could find that certain activities and areas are off-limits. Meanwhile, you’ll pay more for peak-season travel and encounter busier trails and campgrounds, but you’ll have more of a guarantee of favorable conditions and access.

We think this one really highlights the benefits of being open to new activities and of hiring a local guide, who will always know the areas where you can escape the crowds if it’s busy or find the best conditions.

Scrapbook: The experience of a frequent Peak Adventure traveler

Byline photo of Madelaine Church

When you’re scrolling on your phone, do you run into scenic photos? Perhaps Yosemite, San Francisco, or Big Sur. Do you have the desire to travel and make connections with other people? You can do that at Sacramento State with Peak Adventures. What is Peak Adventures?

Peak Adventures is Sac State’s outdoor recreational program that is a part of Associated Students Inc. and located inside the University Union. Services such as a full-service bike shop and rope course referred to as the “challenge center” are offered through the program.

Peak Adventures is most known for outdoor trips like hiking along Point Reyes cliffs or pitching a tent in Joshua Tree. Recreation services are available to all Sac State students, affiliates and the public.

Attendees do have to pay for the excursions ranging from $45 to $500. Peak Adventures also offers free trips to go bike riding in Sacramento. If the cost of these activities don’t fit your budget, consider applying for the Adventure Scholarship . Fall applications are open from Aug. 25 to Dec. 15 and spring applications will resume on Jan. 17, 2024.

Peak Adventures can be an excellent program for students to connect with each other and explore the outdoors. If any student is experiencing loneliness or feeling overwhelmed, Peak Adventures can help eliminate those feelings.

Contemplating about joining Peak Adventures? Read about The State Hornet staffer Madelaine Church’s experience and how it impacted her time at Sac State.

Why did I join Peak Adventures? Peak Adventures allowed myself and many other students to explore Northern California. Participating in the adventures helped me feel less trapped, and gave me the confidence to explore nature.

I started traveling with Peak Adventures in October 2021 in my second year at Sac State. I saw a social media post on their Instagram account advertising a trip to Apple Hill . I had never been before and it seemed like a great opportunity to connect with other students. We spent the day exploring ranches, drinking apple cider and eating apple cinnamon donuts. Two years later, I have been on 14 trips with Peak Adventures. I have traveled to iconic destinations such as San Francisco, Big Sur, Point Reyes and more. I also had the opportunity to travel outside of state lines and spend a week camping in Moab, Utah during spring break in 2022. Reflecting on each trip with Peak Adventures, I cherish each unique experience and the ability to socialize and make connections while traveling.

Trip Highlights Snowshoeing in Echo Lake, Lake Tahoe

On Jan. 22, 2022, I went snowshoeing for the first time with Peak Adventures in Echo Lake through fresh Sierra Nevada snow.

Peak Adventures provided snowshoes and showed us how to walk in them. This was my third trip with Peak Adventures and I found myself within a vibrant group of 14 people who were eager to make connections. During this trip, I forged many bonds within the group, while taking in the breathtaking winter landscape.

Throughout the hike, participants paused to take videos and pictures to capture the soft, powdery snow covering the mountains. I can still hear the snow’s gentle crunch beneath our snowshoes as we hiked along Echo Lake. This trip felt like we were in a winter fairy tale. Spring Break in Moab Utah Spring break in Moab, Utah with Peak Adventures was unforgettable. We spent 16 hours driving along Highway 50, known as the Loneliest Road in America . During our time in Moab, we immersed ourselves in the desert environment.

During our stay at Big Bend Campground , the group of 24 embarked on various activities. Participants had the opportunity to go paddleboarding along the Colorado River, hike trails in the mountains and climb on magnificent rocks. At night, we’d spend our time gazing at a sky full of twinkling stars.

We explored the heart of downtown Moab and saw the iconic Arches National Park , grabbing pictures by the Delicate Arch . During our time in the park, we got to see petroglyphs near Wolfe Ranch , which was established in the mid-1600s.

This was the most life-changing trip I’ve been on with Peak Adventures. It led me to discover a state I never imagined I would explore.

Big Sur Camping Trip

May 2023 I went on a camping trip with the program to California’s remarkable 90-mile stretch near the coast called Big Sur. I’ve traveled to Big Sur many times, yet each visit manages to take my breath away.

Our large group spent three days and two nights camping at Ventana Campground off of Highway 1. During our camping trip, we hiked along the Valley View Overlook trail. Our hike led us to the mountaintop, where we were mesmerized by the vast expanse of trees and mountains before visiting the captivating McWay Falls . During the evenings we gathered to cook dinner and roasted marshmallows by the crackling fire.

I had a fantastic time on this trip, but my fondest memory was being nestled inside the cozy van for the drive. There was a harmonious blend of laughter that filled the space as we drove along the coast.

How did Peak Adventures change my life?

Peak Adventures also gave me the opportunity to connect with students who had similar interests as me.

In January 2022 during the snowshoe hike in Echo Lake, I met a group of Sac State students who shared a similar interest in travel and found our compatibility exceeded everyone’s expectations. This led us to embark on our own adventures, beginning with a weekend trip at Yosemite National Park in February 2022 when we rented camping equipment and snow shoes from Peak Adventures for this expedition.

We continued to go on adventures together and our group just kept growing!

Peak Adventures has positively impacted my career because the photographs I’ve captured during my adventures caught the program’s attention. They gave me the opportunity to take photos for three trips in spring 2022 and write an article for Eagle Nest Outfitters in 2023. The images I captured on my trips enriched my portfolio and opened doors for me to pursue photography professionally.

On all of my trips with Peak Adventures, trip advisors have always recommended to us that “you get out of what you put in.” I couldn’t have asked for more from the opportunities, connections and memories I’ve made with them. Adventure is calling your name, are you going to answer?

Peak Design Travel Duffel Review: I Tried 2 Sizes

Written by Dan

Updated on August 21st, 2024

Is Peak Design’s Travel Duffel the best one out there? I review this travel and photography bag based on the 35L and 50L sizes I own, noting the best features and a few setbacks.

  • Conclusion: Why get one?

I got the original Peak Design Travel Duffel (in the 35-liter size) when it was new : seriously, it was the newest of the Peak Design lineup at the time. I was overly impressed with its durability and structure, its functions and the cool and sleek look.

Now that I’ve owned tons of duffels through the years, I know one thing for sure: the Peak Design Travel Duffel is one of the strongest out there. I picked it up in the 50L size this year, in the new color: Coyote gold.

I have a lot of thoughts on this Peak Design travel bag, as I’ve become close to an expert on how the brand’s products tend to work and turn out over time. Join me as I review the features on the PD Travel Duffel and see for yourself if it could be for you.

Quick facts on what to know

  • It comes in 4 sizes (in all colors except Coyote): 35L, 50L, 65L and 80L.
  • It has a minimalist and classic build, with pretty clean lines, solid colors and simple straps.
  • There are three ways to carry it: Crossbody, backpack and grab handle style.
  • The Peak Design Travel Duffels all have multiple purposes (mostly speaking to the smaller ones), from weekender bags to a gym bag, or a photography gear haul bag and a long-term travel duffel.
  • A big selling point for Peak Design enthusiasts and photographers is that these duffels are indeed within the PD “ecosystem,” meaning you’ll have clip-in points for Peak Design camera cubes and other accessories that have PD signature Capture Clips .

peak adventure travel

What else should you know before you dive into buying a Peak Design product? Read up on my Peak Design brand review for all my observations.

Pros and cons

In these main pros and cons, I’m listing what stands out for the Travel Duffel in every size.

  • Materials: They are high-class, like all my Peak Design gear. In the case of the Travel Duffels, the exterior is strong recycled weatherproof nylon with abrasion-resistant zippers.
  • Fits within the “Peak Design Ecosystem:” What this means is that the duffels are designed to fit Peak Design camera cubes with “Clip-in points” that hold your other Peak Design products together.
  • Travel features: STRONG zipper quality to help ward off theft and break-ins, three ways to carry during transit, pockets for storage, carry-on approved sizing (select sizes).

peak adventure travel

  • No internal organization (common for duffels).
  • I’m not really on board with the recommended “trolley pass-through” for roller suitcase stacking, which is by using the hand straps. I’ll get into this later.
  • The straps are not cutting it as comfortable in the “backpack carry” for me.

peak adventure travel

When to use a PD Travel Duffel

If you’ve gotten this far, you’re probably thinking, “When would I use an extremely strong travel duffel like the ones from Peak Design?”

The first use case is good old travel . I got my Peak Design 35L Travel Duffel originally for travel, which I was doing a LOT at the time—all over the world, long-term, short-term, flying, road trips, you name it. I wanted a travel duffel that would survive anything and the PD duffels seemed to perform for that.

The second use case is photography . Once you get your hands on a Peak Design Travel Duffel, you will see what I mean in how a duffel this strong can really protect your gear. My disclaimer is that of course you should be protecting your camera gear with Peak Design’s camera cubes (that is a no-brainer).

The larger Peak Design Travel Duffels (65 liters and 80 liters: these are really gigantic) are good for taking along bulky or misshapen stuff wherever it is that you are going. Some ideas are camping, skiing, taking your kid to college or camp, or transporting things during a move. They might also be good for very long-term travel, like packing away things you won’t need every day for a camper van trip.

Main highlights

In this section, I’ll go through the stand-out features of the Peak Design Travel Duffel that make it well worth your money. Keep in mind that with four sizes, there is a lot of variation in capacity, weight and volume between the 35L and 80L, for example. I’ll be commenting both on travel uses and photography uses.

Pockets: everyone needs them

I’ve reviewed other duffels that have lasted me for years, like my Patagonia Black Hole Duffel review , and I’ve noted that duffels don’t typically come with many pockets for storage and organization.

peak adventure travel

The Peak Design Duffels have two internal zip mesh pockets, and four external zipper pockets. This is better than just a few. I find myself at a loss of what to put in the zipper pockets of duffel bags, because without compartments or divisions inside, I’m already packed up with either camera cubes or packing cubes.

peak adventure travel

Strap system

While the Peak Design newfangled handle and strap system takes about 30 seconds to get used to, it’s seamless after that first learning curve. If you see in these photos of Becca trying out the straps and the un-attaching and reattaching, the “Cord Hook” system is simple and strong.

Also worth noting is that the hand straps can be “reconfigured” (meaning their original configuration as the top duo of grab handles is just for top-grabbing) to be backpack straps. (Although, note again, I mentioned in my “Cons” above that they’re not very padded nor very comfortable for backpack-style wearing).

peak adventure travel

Travel features

The Peak Design Travel Duffels are pretty simple, but they are called travel duffels for a good reason. There are a few things to name, like the VERY strong and weatherproofed zippers that aren’t easily slide-able: this is good for avoiding theft during travel .

peak adventure travel

On the other hand, though, some people (like Becca) may get annoyed that the zippers don’t slide very fast. At the end of the day, if you’re using your PD Travel Duffel as a large travel bag, chances are that you aren’t zipping and unzipping it all day long like you would with a handy daypack, anyway.

Peak Design Ecosystem-compatible

As you can see in this photo with the capture clip, you’ll be able to hook in and lock in your Peak Design camera cubes with the clip-in points. This helps with keeping everything steady in a Tetris-like formation, rather than sliding around during transport.

peak adventure travel

How to decide on which size to get

For me, deciding sizing was simple:

My 35L PD Travel Duffel is meant for being my “second item” when I’m packing for a trip. That means I also probably packed my 45-liter Peak Design Travel Backpack and I’m going somewhere far away.

Alternatively, 35 liters is perfect for a weekend away, and I can even pack it with my stuff and Becca’s, and we’ll still have some room. We’ll throw in our packing cubes, my Peak Design Shoe Pouch, the Peak Design Wash Pouch and still have a dab of space left over.

Note: The 35L size is carry-on approved both in the US and internationally (however, your miles may vary on budget airlines around the world with strict rules and weight limits).

This is a bigger bag, meant for being the primary bag on a multi-day road trip for me. For years, Becca traveled with a 50-liter backpack when we’d travel anywhere between 5 days and two weeks.

So, we’re familiar with 50 liters being a ripe size for packing in the contents of a longer trip, or conversely, a LOT of photo gear if I’m ever going on a massive photo adventure.

Note: the 50L Duffel is only “carry-on approved” within the United States.

65 liters and 80 liters

Like I mentioned above, getting into bags that are larger than 50 liters turns into being no joke. A 65-liter bag could be a month of packing, and 80 liters is really meant for giant stuff, like more technical equipment (photography, or not).

I used to take an 80-liter duffel to summer camp, and in it was my bedding, towels, some small electronics or appliances and lots of layers and shoes. That’s what an 80-liter duffel can do for you, and with the Peak Design Travel Duffel, your duffel has all the PD benefits like weatherproofing, incredible durability and of course, excellent zippers.

Conclusion: Why get one?

I think the durability with Peak Design products is unparalleled, and the Travel Duffel collection is no different. As you may have seen me mention in my Peak Design Travel Backpack review , I have banged it up and had it thrown off buses and trains around the world, and it looks unscathed.

So for the travel duffels, if you already had your eye on various duffels and you’re deciding, my opinion is that you won’t find one more durable and long-lasting than any of the PD Duffels in the four sizes currently offered. It’s just really difficult, if not impossible, to damage, mess up or beat up these travel bags.

peak adventure travel

Where to get one

I get all my Peak Design gear on the Peak Design website . It’s simple as to why: there’s always 30-day returns (useful if I change my mind after my item arrived), free shipping over $99 within the US and the Peak Design Lifetime Warranty.

I’m always very glad to have that Lifetime Warranty, as I mention in my reviews of products as important as my Peak Design Everyday Backpack review to accessories like in my Peak Design Shoe Pouch .

Don’t forget, though: Getting a product as big of an investment as a Peak Design Duffel is a great opportunity to shop the Peak Design Pre-Owned Store . There, you can score a deal and a discount and wind up with a good-as-new or gently-used product.
