Why Choose Us?

Grand canyon tours by grand canyon destinations.

Grand Canyon tours  brokered through Grand Canyon Destinations offer an adventure tour experience that is as memorable as it is fun. We offer canyon tours from Las Vegas. The tours travel to the South and West Rim of the canyon as well as the Hoover Dam and  Zion National Park . All of the tour experiences travel in a well-equipped and comfortable fleet of tour buses or Sprinter vans.

The standard Grand Canyon tour companies use a driver and tour guide in one. This person then has to check guests in, narrate the tour, pass out lunches, answer questions, and drive a 40,000 pound vehicle safely. At Grand Canyon Destinations, we value safety and customer service. That is why the tours have a separate driver and tour guide on every tour bus. Your dedicated tour guide will be there to guide you, share facts and stories, answer your questions, and help you with any needs throughout the tour.

The Grand Canyon Tours

Grand Canyon tours  are available for small groups as well as large groups. Whether you plan to see the Hoover Dam or take one of the  Grand Canyon South Rim bus tours,  Grand Canyon Destinations can be your guide from Las Vegas. The best canyon tour company from Vegas means putting you first.

The transportations providers, tour guides, and phone agents will exceed your expectations when it comes to service and comfort. When taking one of the tours, you will find different ways to explore. The following information will fill you in on what to expect when visiting the  Grand Canyons West Rim  or booking one of the South Rim tours through our website.

Traveling In Comfort

When it comes to traveling, we know that you want to be comfortable. That is why the transportation provider makes this a priority by providing the comfortable fleet of vehicles. The large tour buses hold up to 55 passengers. Each bus has an on board restroom, head and foot rests, TVs for entertainment, and individually controlled air conditioning.  There is plenty of room to stand up as well as storage for bags and souvenirs.

A Grand Canyon tour bus

If you choose to take a small group South or West Rim tour, you will ride in a 12-passenger Mercedes Sprinter van. There is extra leg room and ceilings tall enough to stand in these vans as well. Having your own personal tour guide will allow your small group to customize your tour as well.

Small group Grand Canyon tours travel in a Mercedes Sprinter

  Guided Walking Grand Canyon Tours

Guided walking tours to the canyon are available too. These tours allow guests to learn about the history of the area along with desert animals and plants. Small tour groups can go by a 12-passenger, Mercedes Sprinter van to see all that a South Rim day tour has to offer. We travel to the more popular areas such as Grand Canyon National Park and the West Rim, as well as to scenic canyon areas in southern Utah. Whether you are traveling with your family, friends, or solo, we can help you find just the right option for a day trip from Las Vegas.

Tours To Grand Canyon National Park

You will love taking one of the Grand Canyon tours to the park, as you can plan this journey anytime. The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While the South Rim is quite popular with tourists, the North Rim of the canyon is only open from the middle part of May to October. Therefore, North Rim tours are not as popular as a South Rim day trip or a West Rim bus tour.

Canyon Facts

Before you take one of the day trips from Las Vegas to the South Rim, it’s nice to know some facts about the canyon itself. The canyon is 277 miles in length. The Colorado River, at the canyon’s base, has carved out the rock of the canyon for about 6 million years. South Rim of the canyon became part of the US National Park system on February 26, 1919. Grand Canyon National Park is the second-most visited national park in the US after the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee. The park sees about 6 million visitors annually.

For answers to more questions, such as, where is the Grand Canyon located, check out the  national park website .

How Long It Takes To Reach Your Destination

If you go on one of the Las Vegas tours by bus, it will take about 4.5 hours to get to the park entrance. That is why it leaves early in the morning at 6:00 am for the regular and rim VIP trips. We want you to be able to spend at least three hours inside the park once we reach the South Rim. From Las Vegas the park is about 280 miles away.

Travel Along Famous Route 66

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is visited the most often of any location. You will love taking the rim day trip to the South Rim, as you don’t have to check in at a terminal, nor have to wait in line. Enjoy the desert-scape of the Mohave Desert, as one of the buses takes you to your destination along the famous Route 66.

Grand Canyon Village

One of the areas of the most well known areas is the Grand Canyon Village. This is one of the featured attractions of  Grand Canyon tours  and rim tours within the park. This trip from Las Vegas may be taken by a comfortable bus, as a guided walking tour, or as rim day trip for small or large groups.

Some Of The Rim Hotels

If you wish to spend a longer time in the park and not take one of the rim day trip excursions, you can arrange to stay at one of the rim hotels as part of your experience. One of the popular hotels on the South Rim is the historic El Tovar, which features 78 rooms. The Bright Angel Hotel feature 86 units. Two hotels that sit on the canyon’s rim include the Kachina Lodge and the Thunderbird Lodge. Therefore, you have several options if you don’t want to hurry back to Las Vegas.

How To Make The Most Of Your Time In The South Rim

You will find, once you enter Grand Canyon National Park, that three sections are part of the South Rim. These sections include Desert View Road, Hermit Road, and the Village. Each part offers a slightly different canyon experience when taking a South Rim day trip.

These sections are well known by travelers to the South Rim, unlike the areas of the North Rim. The North Rim is more remote and does not feature interactive buildings and activities. It is also closed in the winter time, which makes Grand Canyon North Rim tours rare journeys.

For example, you may want to rent a bicycle and bike along the 7-mile-long Hermit Road at the South Rim. Hermit Road begins at the Village and ends at the landmark of Hermit’s Rest. You can either bike or visit the viewpoints along the road by shuttle. The shuttle runs from March 1 until November 30. You must hike or take a bike from December to February. We recommend biking along the road, as it is easier than hopping on and off a shuttle, and much quicker than walking.

Popular South Rim Viewpoints

The viewpoints in the South Rim will give you some stunning views of the surrounding rockscape. Some of the popular venues include Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Bright Angel Lodge. Mather Point can be seen at the beginning of a South Rim tour, while Yavapai point is at the halfway point on a walking tour, and Bright Angel Lodge is the ending point. All provide amazing and different views into the canyon.

View into the South Rim seen on Grand Canyon tours

Walking The South Rim Trail Of Time

You might also want to walk the South Rim Trail. This trail accommodates hikers and walkers of various skills and abilities, as most of the trail is paved and flat. The trail, which follows the perimeter of the rim, stretches 13 miles or 21 km from Hermit’s Rest to the South Kaibab trailhead. If you don’t want to walk all the 13 miles, you can always choose a small part of the trail to walk and use the shuttle part of the time.

Bright Angel Trail

One of the popular trails on the South Rim is the Bright Angel Trail. This trail, which is easily accessible, begins at Grand Canyon Village. Bright Angel Trail begins at the South Rim and finishes at Bright Angel Campground, close to the Colorado River. In total, the trail is about 9.5 miles in length and descends almost 4,400 feet. Like the South Rim Trail, you can hike part of the trail on one of the day trips, as it is difficult to walk the trail and come back in the same day. Therefore, we recommend that you hike part of the trail and turn around.

When you take one of our Las Vegas tours, you can make the trip extra special by adding some unique activities. As mentioned, the  Grand Canyon tours  are adaptable to allow you to add any excursions you are interested in. This may mean you want to include one of the airplane tours at the South Rim, which can be arranged if you book in advance. Seeing Bright Angel Lodge and the expansive South Rim of the canyon from an air tour is an incredible site to see. Keep in mind that many activities are not possible during a one-day tour. However, you can take a bus tour to the canyon, stay the night, and return the following day on a bus tour.

Whatever form your tour takes, we are here to help make the trip fun and memorable. Taking one of the tours and communicating with the tour guides makes day trip tours in Grand Canyon locations that much more memorable.

Shortening Your Excursion Along Bright Angel Trail

One of the hiking options you can take on a canyon day trip along Bright Angel Trail is walking 1.5 miles to the resthouse. The path is a 3-mile round trip that allows you to descend a switchback trail on the rim.

More ambitious hikers hike the Bright Angel Trail to the Indian Garden, which offers a 9-mile roundtrip adventure. After you pass the resthouse on this trail, the path levels out, although you are still descending down the trail. Don’t try to go past the Indian Garden in the summer, as the thermometer can read triple-digit Fahrenheit temperatures.

Plateau Point

If you choose to take the trail when it is cooler, you may pursue an adventure down Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point. This 12-mile round-trip hike is beyond Indian Garden, and permits trail-goers to see a great view of the Colorado River.

A Tip For Hikers Who Hike Bright Angel Trail

One tip to remember when hiking the Bright Angel Trail is that going down the trail is much easier than returning, as you are walking up an incline. If you take the Bright Angel Trail, it is best to begin early, and arm yourself with plenty of water and salty snacks. You should also give yourself ample time to return from your hike, back to the rim. If you go on one of our day trips, you should pursue the 3-mile resthouse turnaround trail.

Visiting The IMAX Theater At The Visitor Center

If you want to forego hiking altogether, you can enjoy a movie at the IMAX theater in the park Visitors Center. The 34-minute Grand Canyon production may not be the same as seeing the canyon itself, but it will give you a good introduction to the canyon and its history. It also allows you to escape the heat in the summer in a comfortable, air-conditioned theater.

Visiting The Grand Canyon Skywalk At The West Rim

You can also experience tours to the West Rim and Skywalk. A Skywalk tour will take you to  Grand Canyon West , owned and inhabited by the Hualapai tribe. When taking a West Rim bus tour, you can travel on a fully equipped bus and take in the sights from panoramic windows. A West Rim guided tour is also available for day travelers. This type of trip is popular, as it permits visitors to interact and engage in the tour activity.

If you are vacationing with a small group in Las Vegas, ask about a VIP West Rim bus tour for small groups. The transportation provider can take up to 12 guests to the West Rim in a Mercedes Sprinter. One of the tour guides will serve as your personal tour escort.

Grand Canyon tours to the West Rim allow you to see the Colorado River here

Some Facts About The Skywalk

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a must-see attraction at Grand Canyon West. The bridge is made of reinforced glass creating a see-through platform that allows visitors to see down to the canyon floor. Don’t worry about the sturdiness of the glass bridge. It can hold as many as 70 jets, fully loaded with travelers. Only 120 visitors are allowed on the bridge at one time.

Zion National Park And Hoover Dam

A tour can also take you to Zion National Park, located in Utah. This popular tour option allows you to explore Zion Canyon in Southern Utah in the day and return to Las Vegas at night. If you would like to take a short, half-day tour to the Hoover Dam, we also offer this tour. You can take an express tour or one of the classic Hoover Dam tours, which has an underground tour of the powerplant.

Unique Grand Canyon Activities

A rim bus tour may lead to the South Rim or West Rim. Grand Canyon tours can take various forms depending on what you would like to see and do. For example, you may want to schedule a mule ride as one of the activities on a canyon trip.

This type of pursuit must be scheduled well in advance, as it is one of the unique outdoor activities at the canyon. You just need to decide which hotel you want to include on your itinerary. You may wish to fly to the West Rim and view the Skywalk, or go toward the North Rim or South Rim on one of the Grand Canyon tours. We can customize a travel plan according to your needs and preferences when you take a tour. In addition to the regular excursions, we can also work with you to plan a personalized journey.

Other Travel Experiences

Considering how breathtaking the Grand Canyon is, it is easy to see why national park tours are such popular escapes from Las Vegas. Grand Canyon tours can also include the following activities:

  • Grand Canyon National park tours can be lead by a professional tour guides or led by rangers in the park.
  • A railway excursion into the park by an old-fashioned steam locomotive. This type of adventure tour is available during the summer months.
  • Grand Canyon Village is where you can see historic sites. You can take the shuttle or walk the length of the village, which has been proclaimed a historic landmark site.
  • Hoover Dam tours  are offered as half-day tours to the Hoover Dam.

Best Times To Visit

Grand Canyon Destinations can arrange to have you taken to Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon, or Hoover Dam. Peak season at the canyon are the summer months, leaving spring and fall less crowded times to visit. Not only is the weather more temperate, the number of people thin out during these times. If you travel from June to September, expect to see larger crowds.

By taking one of the tours, you can get to your destination without worrying about parking or access. A day trip to the South Rim or West Rim is always a fun travel choice from Las Vegas. It also gives you a break in your regular vacation routine.

What To Expect On A South Rim Or West Rim Journey

The travel time to the South Rim of the canyon is longer than to the West Rim. The tour buses leave around 6:00 AM for the South Rim. If you visit the West Rim, the tour bus will pick you up from or near your hotel at around 6:00 AM also due to the entrance lines getting busy later in the morning.

What To Wear At The Grand Canyon

When visiting any part of the Grand Canyon, make sure you dress in layers and wear sunscreen. The sun can reflect strongly off canyon walls. The weather can also change in an instant, especially if you go from one elevation to the next. Be prepared when you visit Zion National Park or the canyon. The walls of the canyons capture the heat of the sun during the summer and the trails can be especially dangerous when it snows.

While the surrounding sights around Las Vegas are beautiful, you still have to make sure that you stay protected from the outside elements. We can help with all your Grand Canyon travel needs. Take one of the canyon tours here at Grand Canyon Destinations, or choose to travel to Utah. The friendly tour guides and well-equipped buses will make any initial tour of the sites informative and interesting.

Grand Canyon West Rim

Because of the scarcity of hotels at the West Rim, most visitors wisely choose to stay overnight in Kingman (73 miles), Peach Springs (116 miles), Laughlin, NV (111 miles) or Las Vegas, NV (123 miles.) Look for hotel or tour packages that include admission to Grand Canyon West and its attractions with lodging at or near the West Rim, or go a la carte and book your hotel based on your individual needs and drive yourself or book a tour.

The West Rim is THE premier destination for tours originating in Las Vegas, and it offers several singular tour options not available at the South or North Rims: the Grand Canyon Skywalk; helicopter landings in the Inner Canyon; the road you can drive to the bottom; and one-day Colorado River rafting trips. If you have just a half-day to see the West Rim, take a helicopter or air tour from Las Vegas. If you have more time, consider a bus tour with a stop at Hoover Dam. Whatever tour you choose, you'll be required to buy an entrance package to Grand Canyon West; this is often included in tour prices, so check with your tour operator of choice. The best-value and least expensive package that includes a walk on the Skywalk - the highlight of the area - runs about $79.99 per person. Helicopter and air tours start about $250 per person, and bus/coach tours are affordable, typically starting under $120 per person.

Most visitors approach the West Rim from Las Vegas, a 123-mile drive via Highway 93 south over Hoover Dam. Go northeast on Pierce Ferry Road (County Highway 25)to Diamond Bar Road (County Highway 261). Go east on Diamond Bar Rd to Grand Canyon West. From Kingman, go north on Stockton Hill Road to Pierce Ferry Road to Diamond Bar Road. The final 9 miles of Diamond Bar Road are unpaved, and the road ends at Grand Canyon West Airport, the entrance to the West Rim, where you'll buy your entrance package and optional upgrades. Take the mandatory park-and-ride shuttle into Grand Canyon West.

Grand Canyon West Rim

Fast becoming one of the most talked-about destinations at the Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon West attracts about 700,000 visitors each year. The destination has become increasingly popular among Grand Canyon tourists since the March 2007 grand opening of the Grand Canyon Skywalk. This cantilevered glass-bottomed bridge is just 2 ½ hours from Las Vegas and appeals to adrenaline seekers, Las Vegas daytrippers and regular folks alike. While not a part of Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon West's visitors still experience stunning vistas, the Skywalk, Guano Point, Eagle Point, and Hualapai Ranch, all points of pride for the West Rim's operators, the Hualapai Native American Tribe.

Grand Canyon West is open to the public from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily from October through March, and from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily from April through September. It is open every day of the year including all major holidays.

Although Grand Canyon West is typically less crowded than the South Rim, one can expect a swell of visitors each day between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Most visitors stay about 3–4 hours, so be aware that the last ticket is sold 1½ hours prior to closing time.

The best time of year to visit Grand Canyon West is late fall through spring, when daytime temperatures are pleasant, ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-90s, and generally under sunny conditions. Summertime temperatures can soar to well above 100° Fahrenheit, so standing in line for the shuttle or the Skywalk can be hot under the intense sun.

No matter when you visit, be sure to bring about a quart of water per person, a wide-brimmed hat, high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and very light layers.

Stay in Las Vegas When Visiting the West Rim

Reservations.

The Hualapai Nation offers visitors flexible admission packages to the Grand Canyon Skywalk with optional helicopter tours, Canyon floor helicopter landings, boat trips on the Colorado River, entertainment, dining, horseback riding, 1-day river rafting and more. Reservations can be made on their website at www.hualapaitourism.com, by phone 1-888-868-WEST(9378) or 928-769-2636, or by booking with a tour company like those listed on our West Rim Tours page .

We recommend doing the latter if you do not plan on driving yourself to Grand Canyon West and are starting from Las Vegas. There are several excellent options for helicopter, air and ground tours from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West, and they are all capable of combining the transportation/tour portion with tickets to Grand Canyon West and custom add-on activities in one neat little package.

Remember, the West Rim is not inside the Grand Canyon National Park. It is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe; the Hualapai collect fees for entrance to the West Rim. A National Park 7-day entry pass, Golden Age passport or other National Park Service pass will not apply at Grand Canyon West.

At the very least, each person is required to purchase the Legacy Package, priced at $44.05 (including all taxes and fees) per person.

No private vehicles are permitted past the Grand Canyon West entrance. You must park your car at the Grand Canyon West Welcome Center, located at the West Rim Airport. Visitors then board the free Hop-On Hop-Off shuttle service to get to the West Rim attractions.

At the Welcome Center, you'll have the opportunity to meet with a tour operator and select a tour package. The basic package and every other upgraded package includes the Hop-On Hop-Off shuttle to area attractions like Hualapai Ranch, Eagle Point, Guano Point, Native American demonstrations and cowboy performances at three viewpoints, a Hualapai visitation certificate, and photo opportunities with Hualapai members.

The packages are priced per person (child or adult) as follows:

The Legacy Package — $42.99 per person inclusive of taxes and fees: This basic entry package is the minimum required package. The Legacy package DOES NOT include walking on the Skywalk.

The Legacy Gold Package — $79.00 per person inclusive of taxes and fees:  This is the least expensive packages that includes tickets to walk on the Grand Canyon Skywalk. It includes everything in the Legacy and Legacy Silver packages, with the addition of an adult Skywalk ticket.

Additional add-ons are available at any level, including helicopter rides that land at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, pontoon boat rides down the Colorado River, horseback rides, meal packages and overnight lodging packages and upgrades.

  • Park-and-ride shuttle from Dolan Springs — $15 cash round-trip
  • Meal package — $16.00 per person
  • Professional Skywalk photos — ~$30 each
  • Overnight cabin on the Rim — $149.90 (per person based on double occupancy)
  • 30-minute horseback ride to the Rim — $37.45 per person
  • 60-minute horseback ride to the Rim — $59.39 per person
  • 90-minute horseback ride along the Rim — $80.25 per person
  • 12–15-minute Flight of the Eagle air tour — $143.03 per person
  • 40-minute Grand Canyon Discovery helicopter tour with 20-minute landing below the Rim — $153.73 per person
  • Helicopter/Boat trip with flight, Canyon floor landing, and pontoon boat ride — $199.99 per person

The West Rim does feature overnight accommodations nearby; Hualapai Ranch and Hualapai Lodge are operated by the Tribe. The Hualapai Ranch is located inside the Grand Canyon West recreation area, while the Lodge is approximately 90 minutes from the West Rim in Peach Springs, AZ on historic Route 66. A third option is the Grand Canyon Ranch Resort, just 2 miles outside Grand Canyon West on Diamond Bar Ranch Road.

Here's a list of estimates, exclusive of taxes, gratuities and fees where applicable:

  • Hualapai Ranch & Cabins — $129 per person
  • Hualapai Lodge on Route 66 — $69.95 per person
  • Grand Canyon Ranch Resort — $300 per person

The Hualapai Tribe also operates Hualapai River Runners, the only providers of 1-day whitewater river rafting at the Grand Canyon. Trips operate from March through October, departing in the early morning from Peach Springs, so it's wise to book the night before at the Hualapai Lodge on Route 66. The Hualapai tourism site can assist visitors with booking these lodging/rafting packages.

  • 1-day Colorado River whitewater rafting trip — $382 per person, after taxes and fees

Getting Here

Whether you drive yourself or take a guided helicopter, air or coach tour, Grand Canyon West is an ideal day trip from Las Vegas. While we typically encourage visitors to drive themselves to the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon West is a different story, IF you're coming from Las Vegas. There are a myriad of high-quality tours from Las Vegas to the West Rim, whether by helicopter, airplane or ground, and the tour companies each do a terrific job of providing an excellent tour, with informative and entertaining narration, and neatly packaging the entrance fees, activities and upgrades available at Grand Canyon West.

That being said, you can drive yourself to the Grand Canyon West entrance. Be prepared for the 9 mile unpaved yet graded, bumpy and dusty drive on Diamond Bar Road as you approach the Grand Canyon West airport. (Note: it is estimated that the road will be paved in full by Spring 2014.) No private vehicles are permitted past the Grand Canyon West entrance. You must park your car at the Grand Canyon West Welcome Center. You will be directed purchase an entrance package and board the Hop-On Hop-Off shuttle, included in the price of all entrance packages.

Click here for West Rim driving directions from Las Vegas, the South Rim, Sedona & more .

Park-and-Ride Shuttle

If you don't want to drive the unpaved portion of the road, you can take a shuttle service from Dolan Spring. The Park and Ride shuttle is $15 per person round trip. If you are interested in this service please contact http://www.hualapaitourism.com/parknride.php (888) 868.9378(WEST) or (928) 769.2636 to make your reservation. This shuttle departs from 16011 Pierce Ferry Rd, Dolan Springs, AZ.

Hop-On Hop-Off Shuttle

The Hop-On Hop-Off shuttles circulate throughout Grand Canyon West continuously throughout the day, taking visitors to the three main areas. They stop at each point of interest, Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch, approximately every 15 minutes.

There are dozens of ways to see the West Rim, from helicopter tours to coach bus rides to pontoon boat cruises, and this is the only place at the Grand Canyon where you can experience a helicopter landing on the Canyon floor. There is easily a half-day's worth of activities available. Walk the Skywalk, marvel at the views from Guano Point and Eagle Point, and watch Native American and cowboy demonstrations; all accessible by a Hop-On Hop-Off shuttle included in the price of admission to Grand Canyon West.

Grand Canyon Skywalk

Grand Canyon West boasts the newest visitor attraction, the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Its plexiglass floor extends 70 feet over the edge of the Canyon's rim, allowing visitors to look straight down to the canyon floor 4,000 feet below. It is 10 feet wide, and flanked by glass walls 4–6 feet high; high enough to exceed safety code, but low enough to let visitors explore and view the Canyon unencumbered.

Cameras and personal property are not allowed on the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Lockers are provided, and professional photographers are available to take your picture on the Skywalk, with photos available for later purchase. Photos of the Skywalk may be taken from the side with personal cameras. Pets, wheelchairs and strollers are not permitted on the Skywalk, in order to preserve the view through the DuPont SentryGlas® transparent floor.

Eagle Point

The Skywalk is the highlight of the Eagle Point area, but you'll also want to do a walking tour of Native American Village: authentic Native American dwellings depicting multiple tribes. Sit down at the amphitheater and enjoy live Native American performances from various tribes demonstrated continuously all day. Browse handmade, authentic Native American jewelry and crafts.

Guano Point

Hualapai ranch & cabins.

The final stop on the free shuttle route is the Hualapai Ranch & Cabins. Enjoy western hospitality, cowboy entertainment, wagon rides and more. Learn how to rope, quick draw and tomahawk toss the cowboy way. Embark on a guided 30-minute horseback ride to the rim and 90-minute rides along the rim. Stay overnight in western cabins, the only lodging "in-park" at Grand Canyon West, facing the canyon rim. At night, join the cowboys making S'mores and telling stories around an open fire.

Package Add-Ons

At Grand Canyon West, there are exhilarating tour and activity upgrades that will round out your experience. These options are not for the budget traveler, however; when added to the typical entrance package price of $88 per person (which includes the Skywalk) these upgrades will likely push your trip up to the "bucket-list" level of expenditure. The following prices do not include taxes and fees.

  • Stay overnight in a cabin on the Rim — $100 (per person based on double occupancy)
  • Traditional 30-minute horseback ride to the Rim — $35 per person
  • Extended 90-minute horseback ride along the Rim — $75 per person
  • 12–15-minute Flight of the Eagle air tour — $129 per person
  • 40-minute Grand Canyon Discovery helicopter tour with 20-minute landing below the Rim — $139 per person
  • Helicopter/Boat trip combines a flight through the canyon, landing on the Canyon floor, then a pontoon boat ride on the Colorado River — $171 per person

One-Day Whitewater River Rafting

About 90 minutes away from Grand Canyon West, in the town of Peach Springs, the Hualapai Tribe also operates Hualapai River Runners, the only providers of 1-day whitewater river rafting at the Grand Canyon. Trips operate from March through October, departing in the early morning from Peach Springs, so it's wise to book the night before at the Hualapai Lodge on Route 66. A shuttle, included in the package price, returns visitors to Peach Springs at the end of the trip. The Hualapai tourism site can assist visitors with booking these lodging/rafting packages.

It's Not the National Park

While there has been some criticism of Grand Canyon West as a tourist attraction, there are an equal number of excellent reviews raving about the dramatic Grand Canyon views, the Native American heritage displays and the Skywalk itself. The key to getting the most out of Grand Canyon West is to be well-informed and fully prepared for the expense, travel time, road conditions, weather and remoteness.

Grand Canyon West is privately owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe and requires the purchase of a permit and Legacy tour package for entry. Outside food and drink are not permitted (except for water) and you may be persuaded to purchase photos and/or a souvenir. A typical visit, without tour add-ons, could total around $206 per person, if it looked like this:

  • Legacy Gold entrance package, includes a meal and the Skywalk — $87.92 after tax/fees
  • Three professional Skywalk photos — $96.30 after tax
  • Souvenir purchase at the gift shop, using a $5 coupon included in the package — $21.40 after tax

The travel time — just 2 ½ hours from Las Vegas — is minimal compared to the drive to the South Rim from Las Vegas, but because signage is minimal until you get within about 10 miles of Grand Canyon West, and much of the drive is on 2-lane roads and even 9-miles of a graded dirt road that's bumpy, dusty and has a 25 MPH posted speed limit, it seems like a more arduous journey than it really is, especially if you're unprepared. Patience and a high-clearance vehicle are definitely recommended; it's unwise to take a regular sedan — especially a rental car — to Grand Canyon West. Don't follow the car in front of you too closely, or you'll be shrouded in dust and unable to see properly. If you are driving a rental car, take the Park-and-Ride shuttle from Dolan Springs. It's just $15 cash, round trip, paid to the driver and worth every penny to avoid additional charges from the rental car company.

You may experience long lines at the shuttle stops or waiting to walk on the Skywalk. There isn't much protection from the elements in these queues, so be prepared with a wide-brimmed hat, plenty of high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, light layers, and at least a quart of water per person.

Some visitors are struck by the remoteness of the West Rim. There are no services along the 50–70 miles between US-93 or Kingman, respectively, and Grand Canyon West, so make sure you have sufficient gas, air in your tires, and your car is in good working order. Take precautions typical of any road trip; have water, food and emergency supplies in your vehicle.

There is almost no cell service at Grand Canyon West. Do not rely on your mobile for emergency calls, nor your smartphone for directions, a connection to the internet, or travel apps. Be prepared with some printed or written directions, and make your hotel reservations ahead of time.

West Rim Hotels & Lodging

Grand Canyon West, while conveniently located just 125 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada, is in a remote part of northwestern Arizona, with few developed comforts in the area. This working cattle ranch offers pine cabins, sleeping tipis (seasonally), western entertainment, helicopter flights, and horseback rides. The Hualapai have preserved this remote part of Arizona, providing lodging and dining that meet our creature comforts, but not taking away from the beauty that is the Grand Canyon West Rim.

Truth be told, most Grand Canyon West Rim visitors are daytrippers who choose to book their overnight accommodations in Las Vegas, NV — just a 2 ½-hour drive from this western-most Grand Canyon point of interest. One can easily drive themselves or take a bus or coach tour from Las Vegas and see the West Rim in 8 hours round-trip, or even half that time on a helicopter or air tour from Las Vegas.

We also highly recommend checking out West Rim hotels in Kingman , just 70 miles from Grand Canyon West and a central resting stop with easy access to I-40, I-93, and several fascinating attractions including ghost towns, gold mines, museums, lakes, Hoover Dam, gaming and more.

The Grand Canyon West Rim's elevation, at 4,800 feet above sea level, is right between that of desert Las Vegas and the lofty plateau of the South Rim. It stands to reason, then, that visitors generally experience temperate weather year-round; although summer temperatures can climb past 100° F. The West Rim isn't subject to extreme winter snow conditions like the South and North Rims, although it is possible visitors could encounter snow at Grand Canyon West in December, January and February.

Daylight Savings Time

Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings Time, so if you're coming to Grand Canyon West from Las Vegas, you may need to account for a time difference.

  • Daylight Savings Time (Spring to Fall) — Arizona is equal to Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), so it's the same as Nevada
  • 9:00 am in Las Vegas = 9:00 am at Grand Canyon West
  • Standard Time (Fall to Spring) — Arizona is equal to Mountain Standard Time (MST), which is 1 hour ahead of Nevada
  • 9:00 am in Las Vegas = 10:00 am at Grand Canyon West

Let's get to it! I took the tour on 5.25.24 with Brandon & John..I enjoyed every second of it! Brandon was cool and knowledgeable. We arrived safely to all of our destinations. Brandon was there before 5:45a to pick us up as he stated. Breakfast and dinner was provided to those who paid for it. Lunch was provided for everyone. The stops and tours was awesome!! We made it back to L.V. at 5:30p. Brandon helped us with taking pictures. Thanks Brandon, "Turner" loved the tour and the pics! * Oh and the red velvet cake was so damn good!

Short version: I recommend the West rim grand canyon tour. Brandon is awesome! He knows so much and he's funny. Take the extra $20 per person to tour with him it's worth it. Thanks Nelson for keeping us safe and driving so I can nap. Long version: Before I came on the tour I had contacted them twice. My sister is vegan and they don't offer a vegan lunch option. I was told she can bring her own food. The other thing I asked was if they had outlets on the bus and I was told they have USB ports which isn't true. They have outlets. We stayed at a hotel not on the strip so they picked us up at Caesars. They made 5 stops for 5 hotel pick ups. We were told to pick our breakfasts (extra fee if we wanted it) and lunch before the tour. Many people did not do this. Brandon our tour guide asked multiple people what they wanted and even described some of the food like he worked at the restaurant. Don't be this person. Do it ahead of time. The bus is a double decker. The bottom had two seating areas with tables and then rows of two after those. The bathroom is also downstairs. Not sure what the seat up is upstairs. After picking everyone up we drive through Boulder City. Our first stop was the breakfast place. I thought they'd be open so I could grab something else because I have dietary restrictions and couldn't eat anything offered. They do not. It's a grab and go prepared order. My sister got the vegan tofu scramble that she was happy with. Compared to the other meals I thought she should've received more for the price. My friend got the breakfast combo and he enjoyed his too. Next was a rest stop to use the restroom. I recommend getting on line for the bathroom as soon as possible because the line was long. Thankfully they have food there so I was able to get something to eat. During the time between breakfast and the grand canyon we are given a ton of information about boulder city, Nevada, and the grand canyon. He also played the cars movie on TV. There's only one TV downstairs that's facing towards the front of the bus. Before we get to the grand canyon Brandon gave us a rundown of what we are going to do and the things that are offered at an additional cost. There's a skywalk and a private tour that he does himself. When I first booked I thought we'd just go on our own. Once we got to know Brandon it was a no brainier that we'd go with him and get driven around privately. He also offers to take pictures of you. He gets the good angles Brandon gives you instructions and times to meet him. Do whatever he says. It makes it easier for yourself and every one else. We went to eagles point first. Brandon takes your photo at the edge and gives you some facts. He gave us a time and place to meet so we could explore ourselves. You walk around to look at different houses and facts about the hualapai. We were told they do performances and we went to go watch it. SKIP THIS. The video is of the performance. Then we went to guano point where we are our lunches. I got the Greek salad. It had olives, and tomatoes. On the way the feta cheese, balsamic dressing and another mystery sauce that I thought was hummus. Brandon told us different stories about things around and then we climbed what looks like an easy rock hill. I wouldn't recommend it for older people. The top only fits 5 people so we took turns at the top. The hardest part was getting down off the hill. We couldn't go the same way we came up since there was so many people. Since there wasn't much to do at eagle point so I bought some souvenirs and thankfully I did because we didn't go shopping after that. He did ask if anyone wanted to but majority of people said no. We stopped quickly at the Hoover dam to take a quick photo and off we went to the diner. The drive back to the diner for dinner seemed longer because we didn't stop anywhere else. The diner gave you 9/10 options. We opted out since we were only 45 minutes from vegas. A different movie was played and if you look out the window you can see wild cows. Drop off was swift. We were given multiple water bottles throughout the trip and one snack. If you burn in the sun like I do bring sun block and a hat! There's no shade unless you are going to sit at the tables. Wear sneakers if you plan on climbing . Otherwise the ground is majority flat so you can wear whatever you want but the ground is sandy at times. The only negative that I do have is the bus is older and there's no sink in the bathroom. They do have hand sanitizer.

We booked our trip to Grand Canyon west rim and Hoover dam offered by Grand canyon destination tour through an online bookings. This was a full day trip and It was very memorable. We woke up and have to be at treasure island by 545 am or so. We walked from our hotel which was Vdara to treasure island. When we booked this trip, the description stated hotel pick up. We did not know that pickup only at certain hotels and not all hotels. Which is understandable considering that would take forever. Overall, Elaine was a great driver. She drove the tour bus and back it up to park with ease. Curty was great and had a lot of good jokes throughout this ride. Before we head to Grand Canyon we stopped and pick up our lunches at a restaurant that the tour bus has contracts with. Other people picked up their breakfast if they ordered the night before as well. We were so glad we brought our breakfast at the hotel cafe, which cost more but it was of better quality to us. This tour bus have outlet to charge our phones, which was great. We stopped along the way for restroom break and then headed to Grand Canyon. We opted for our own tour and we like it more. We get to go at our own pace and not have to wait for other people to sightsee. The Grand Canyon shuttle driver was all nice. We headed back to our bus around 130pm or so and then went to Hoover dam afterward. We got dropped off at treasure island around 630pm. It took us twenty five minutes or so to walk to Aria for dinner. It was a long day. We were glad we did the tour bus trip so we do not have to drive to Grand Canyon by ourselves.

Terrific day out! We were always fully informed and well looked after by our wonderfully knowledgeable tour guide Laila and a very expert driver who chauffeured us all day, from a very early start. As great having someone who could answer all our questions and provide other useful information.

Love the tour today 7/28/2024 at the grand canyon south rim with Brandon and John. They are so professional and friendly. The grand canyon are beautiful I also did the sky walk and VIP walking tour with Brandon. We stop by the hover dam too. Brandon was very informative and patient with everyone. He went above and beyond to meet everyone requests. John was the driver and he was on time picking everyone up. The only thing I hope they could improve are the foods they offered. We have breakfast, lunch and dinner for those who pay for. I did all three. I think it too pricey for the portion and tastes.

Hello Jonathan, I'm glad to hear that you had such a positive experience on the tour. The Grand Canyon is indeed a breathtaking place to visit, and it's great that Brandon and John added to your enjoyment with their professionalism and friendliness. Your feedback regarding the food is valuable, as it can help us to further enhance the overall experience for future guests. It's clear that Brandon and John made a great impression, and I'm sure your comments will be beneficial for others considering this tour. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!

I was planning a day trip to the Grand Canyon from Vegas, and after some research, I decided to go with Grand Canyon Destinations and do a South Rim tour. I'm pleased with my vendor selection. We booked through a third-party site via Viator and communication was seamless. As promised, they sent pickup details the night before. We went with the most basic tour option (bus tour only). They had other options to order a hot breakfast and upgrade to the walking tour; they offered several opportunities to purchase the add-ons (Pro tip: if you are interested in the upgrades, it's cheaper to buy the basic bus tour and do the add on later). A brown bag lunch was included and came with your choice of a ham, turkey, or veggie sandwich plus a bag of chips and bottled water. To start the tour, there were several pickup stops along the strip: Golden Nugget, Sahara, Treasure Island, Horseshoe, and Excalibur. They assigned us to our pickup stop based on hotel location. They told us to be there 10 minutes beforehand and gave us the bus number and driver name (Rick) details in the email. Our tour guide for the day was Steven. He did a great job of communicating the itinerary and provided facts about each point of interest along the way. One of the pit stops and highlights along the way was driving down Route 66 and stopping in Seligman, Arizona - where the Disney movie "Cars" was based! Speaking of movies, there was a DVD player on the bus and they played a History Channel movie about the Grand Canyon and Historical Route 66. The movies were later switched to a marathon of family-friendly showings: Cheaper by the Dozen 1 and 2, The Incredibles 1 and 2, Bedtime Stories, and Minions. The bus was clean and comfortable. There was also a restroom onboard (but I did not use it). They spaced out the rest stops enough that using the onboard facilities wasn't required. Since it's a long drive, it would've been nice to have charging outlets as an amenity, but I won't knock them for it. For the free breakfast, we were offered granola bars. The first pit stop was in Boulder City where we stopped at The Tap restaurant to pick up our bagged lunches and hot breakfast items (for those that purchased this option). Cookies were passed out after the Grand Canyon visit as an afternoon snack. They counted out the exact number of cookies for the number of people on the tour - so no seconds! On the way back to Vegas, we stopped back at The Tap to pick-up dinner (a menu was passed around the bus on the way back and the tour guide placed orders en route for those who wished to purchase). We didn't stop at The Kingman Visitor Center on Route 66 as noted in the itinerary. The reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is because the itinerary was misleading. The itinerary could be more clear that those who purchased the bus tour option only (no walking tour) would be dropped off at Mather Point and given 2.5 hours to walk the Rim Trail to meet back at Bright Angel Lodge. Only those who purchased the walking tour would be driven down to Bright Angel Point to walk that trail. Mather Point to Bright Angel Lodge is a 3-mile walk and the 2.5 hours was enough time to make it to the meeting point and take plenty of pictures along the way, but I was under the impression that we would get to explore Bright Angel Point (though I'm sure the views are all similar). They definitely encouraged purchasing the walking tour option, but they weren't forceful if you opted out of the upgrades like I did. Overall, it was a good day trip to the Grand Canyon, and kudos to our driver, Rick, for driving us 500+ miles to the South Rim, and to Steven for guiding us all the way.

Brandon and Derrick were the mighty duo! My daughter usually gets car sick and I was a little concerned with how the bus ride was going to be. I have to admit, with the comfy chairs, I forgot I was riding a big bus at times. Derrick has some awesome bus driving skills that got us to our destination on time 100% of the time. Brandon was very informative, friendly and knowledgeable about the areas we were driving through. My kids had a blast and it was such a great introduction to the Grand Canyon! Really looking forward to going back.

My husband wanted to take the family on a trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The trip had been planned, but then canceled due to illness. Sadly, before we could reschedule, he passed. We decided to make the trip to honor his last wish. We booked the South Rim tour with Grand Canyon Destinations and were very excited to go. 2 days before the tour, we were informed that the tour to the South Rim was canceled, but we could change to the West. Had we wanted the West, we would have booked it, so we were left scrambling to find another. Totally disappointed and not wanting to to spend double the price we originally paid we ended up going with GCD to the West Rim. First let me say that the website is very deceiving. The West Rim tour says "included in your tour" and lists the Skywalk as included. The confirmation email says "West Rim with Skywalk"; however, the only way this is included with this tour is that the Skywalk is there AT the Grand Canyon. If you want to actually go out on it, it's additional cost. Read the fine print. They make stops at a local restaurant for breakfast (pre-ordered and eaten on the bus) and where you pick up the lunch you ordered. I don't know why they don't just pick up the food, which is all bagged up, hand out the breakfasts right there and then keep the lunch on the bus and then hand them out on the ride. This would also save time and the need to hold your lunch all morning. After we stand in line to pick up the breakfast and lunch, we get back on the bus for about 5 minutes and then there is then an additional stop at the casino to use the restroom. I'm not sure why as there is a restroom on the bus and one at the restaurant where we literally just stopped to get the food. All this does is waste more time. We then continue on to the canyon and on the ride, the tour guide proceeds to upsell the tours. OK fine, but this is when we realized that the tour did not include the skywalk. He states that the website is deceiving, they know, and he wasn't sure why they don't change it. Really? So now we are disappointed and kinda mad. The bus ride was fine, the bus driver, John, was very nice and happy to chat. The tour guide was nice, he did his speel but wasn't much for additional conversation. The Grand Canyon is amazing at any rim, but the West is on the reservation and very commercial. We enjoyed the views for about 3 hours (plenty of time for this rim) and then made our way to the Hoover Dam drive by. This stop was pretty cool and really all you need unless you want to do the actual tour or the dam. We then get back on the bus and head back to the restaurant for the 2 people that ordered dinner to eat. The rest of us just wait. Hot, tired and just want to get back, but we sit and wait. Another great waste of time. oh, yea. I know it's hot during this time of the year, but it's really hot sitting in a bus. The air just couldn't keep up. Overall, the 2 star was because we made it there and back safe and the canyon is beautiful. The tour company needs some help.

Please fix the A/C on the buses! It was a miserable 5 hour round trip with non-working a/c vents. There were times when I felt extremely lethargic and sick despite trying to replenish myself with water. There is no excuse to not have properly functioning a/c in 115 degree temperatures. We booked the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam tour. The morning started pretty early! We were at the pickup location at 445am. We made 2 additional pick up stops and we're on our way. We didn't return to our drop off location until 7pm. Layla was our tour guide. She was amazing! Kind, personable, and knowledgeable! She did an amazing job! Now to the 2 people who ran off from the group and left us waiting in the heat for over an hour while Layla ran around fervidly trying to find you! We had to cancel our other 2 stops just because they delayed our schedule. Please keep in mind that this is NOT an individual private tour, you can't just run off and inconvenience everyone else! They then called the office and said the tour bus left them. NO, YOU RAN OFF FROM THE GROUP. Layla did everything within her power to find you! That part was a HUGE inconvenience and took away from the experience. But all and all, both the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam are beautiful sights to see!

Melissa Giovanni

Melissa Giovanni

Melissa Giovanni has been exploring the southwest for over 20 years, considers herself a true desert lizard, and loves the heat! She first visited Grand Canyon during her undergraduate geology field camp at the University of Arizona, where she ultimately earned her B.S. in geology. Melissa then moved to UCLA for her Ph.D., also in geology. While her doctoral studies focused on the geological evolution of the Peruvian Andes, she discovered her passion for teaching and while still a graduate student, led her very first field trip to Grand Canyon. During a decade of teaching geology at two different universities, Melissa was able to develop her field teaching skills in locales all around Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. Currently a professor at the College of Southern Nevada, she teaches both environmental science and geology. She has been invited to speak at public seminars and for private groups all around the Grand Canyon region.

Since joining the Field Institute in 2016, Melissa's love for the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River, public lands, and conservation continues to grow exponentially. She comes out to hike the canyon as much as possible - her favorite spots are, well, everywhere she has been so far. When at home in Las Vegas, she can be found climbing and hiking in Red Rock Canyon, training as a competitive Masters swimmer, playing guitar, and serving as a Board member for the Southern Nevada Conservancy.

John Begay standing on edge of Grand Canyon

John Begay is a dedicated Diné instructor with three years of experience at the Field Institute. Holding education in Geology and Climate Science from Northern Arizona University, John has also been guiding at the Grand Canyon for six years. He is one of the few Indigenous locals who not only shares the rich history of the Grand Canyon but also provides an authentic perspective on Indigenous heritage. Through his thoughtfully curated hikes, John invites clients to experience the canyon through a unique lens, emphasizing both geological wonders and Native American history.

Marjorie “Slim” Woodruff was born in Arizona. Growing up in primeval desert, she became comfortable with things that crawl, sting, bite, and gnaw, which served her well when she started working with adolescents. While attending Northern Arizona University, she spent much of her free time exploring Grand Canyon. After graduation she led backpacking trips, taught cross-country skiing, drove a tour bus, and otherwise participated in outdoor education and recreation. Slim considers herself a lifelong learner, and employs her time researching Canyon history, anthropology, geology, and natural history. Her writing has appeared in the Grand Canyon anthology On Foot, and in High Country News Writers on the Range.

We offer excursions to the West and South Rims, each with its own unique characteristics and opportunities to explore this popular natural wonder.

The West Rim, located just outside the perimeter of Grand Canyon National Park, is home to the Hualapai Indian Tribe and the famous Skywalk. Should you choose to experience the engineering marvel up close, you will be suspended over the rim with nothing but a thin layer of glass between you and canyon floor some 4,000 feet below. Additional highlights in this area include Guano Point, a now defunct fertilizer mine dating back to the 1930s.

Guests can visit the Grand Canyon Village overlooking the canyon, see the Watchtower, a recreation of an Indian tower or explore the Tusayan Museum and its Anasazi village ruins that are more than eight centuries old. Grand Canyon visitors are moving to hotels outside the national park after water pipeline failures

grand canyon west rim tour las vegas

Associated Press

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Tourists staying at Grand Canyon National Park began moving to accommodations outside the park Thursday after water pipeline failures forced the sudden shutdown of overnight hotel stays during one of the busiest times of the year.

Water restrictions will run throughout the Labor Day holiday when hotels are near or at capacity. It’s an unprecedented outcome, even for a pipeline with a long history of frequent failures. Since July 8, the park has faced challenges with its water supply, and no water is currently being pumped to either the canyon’s south or north rims, officials said.

The 12.5 mile-long (20 kilometer-long) Transcanyon Waterline, originally built in the 1960s, supplies potable water for facilities on the South Rim and inner canyon. Park officials say it has exceeded its expected lifespan.

Since 2010, more than 85 major breaks have disrupted water delivery, but none have forced what park officials call “Stage 4” water restrictions. That is, until four recent significant breaks.

Under these water restrictions, visitors won’t be able to stay overnight starting Thursday, including at El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge and Phantom Ranch.

At Yavapai Lodge, about 970 reservations for the weekend were canceled, according to spokesperson Glen White. Guests will be refunded for all deposits and payments, he said.

A spokesperson for Xanterra Travel Collection, which operates other affected hotels and lodging at the park, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Barbara Badger, who was visiting for two nights from Fontana, California, decided a few weeks ago to spend the first anniversary of her husband’s death at the Grand Canyon, a spot they visited together.

“We loved it. He loved it so much,” Badger said, tearing up as she spoke of her late husband, Douglas Badger. “We never hiked. We just drove around and looked at the beautiful scenery and took pictures of the animals and ate some nice food.”

She “decided to make an adventure out of it” and spend her second night at the campground after a sunset tour on Thursday evening. Badger said she was prepared to camp because not long after she made the reservation, a voice in her head told her to get a sleeping bag and some other gear, without knowing why.

“So I did all of that and, when I got here, I was prepared to camp out and with no reason why,” she said. “Except that’s just the way it worked.”

Hotels located outside the park in the town of Tusayan, Arizona, will not be impacted, and the park will remain open during the day.

Mark and Vicky Williams of London arrived at the park on Wednesday with their 15-month-old son and had planned to stay until Sunday. They got a refund for the nights when they won’t be staying at the hotel in the park, he said.

“We’ve had to rebook somewhere in Tusayan, which is good, but it’s not as good,” Mark Williams said, noting that they wanted to be close to the canyon to walk around the village easier. There wasn’t much choice at the last minute, he said.

“We did have to overpay quite a lot for somewhere that we probably wouldn’t have chosen to stay at,” he said. “But when you’ve got a kid, you just have to find somewhere.”

Carved by the Colorado River and known for its vast desert landscapes, the Grand Canyon welcomed nearly 523,000 visitors last August and more than 466,000 visitors last September.

Josh Coddington, communications director at the Arizona Office of Tourism, said he expects an uptick in calls from people wanting to know if they can visit the Grand Canyon.

“The Grand Canyon is known not only throughout the U.S., but throughout the world, and people love visiting it,” he said.

While the park isn’t entirely closed, any perception that it is could negatively impact the cities and towns where tourists sleep, shop and dine on their way to the canyon, including Flagstaff, Williams and Tusayan on the south side and Cameron on the east side.

Park officials hope to restore full operational status for overnight guests on the South Rim as quickly as possible.

Complicating restoration efforts, however, is that the breaks occurred in a narrow part of the canyon known as “the box,” an area susceptible to rock fall and higher temperatures this time of the year. A photo of one of the recent breaks released by park officials shows a funnel of water spewing from the pipe and across the slim canyon.

“It’s definitely a challenging place to be and have a pipeline break on you,” Grand Canyon spokesperson Joelle Baird said, noting safety concerns for the crews tasked with repairing the damage.

The pipeline failure comes amid a $208 million rehabilitation project of the waterline by the National Park Service that began recently. Upgrades to the associated water delivery system are expected to be completed in 2027.

The park says it wants to meet water supply needs for 6 million annual visitors and its 2,500 year-round residents.

Rio Yamat in Las Vegas, Walter Berry in Phoenix, Felicia Fonseca in Flagstaff, Arizona, and Lisa Baumann in Bellingham, Washington, contributed to this report.
