Vintage Home Designs Christmas Home Tour 2022

We’re so excited to share another tour with you! Michele of @VintageHomeDesigns is a viewer favorite on our YouTube channel and blog. If you’ve seen Michele’s home before you’re going to love seeing all fresh holiday design ideas in her home.

ENTRY & STAIRS

From the front door there is so much to take in. No one does neutrals better than Michele Howell. Every year something new catches my eye. This year the faded pinecone garland draped across the mirror in the entry was my favorite. Michele picked them up from one of her travels. She likes to thrifting, estate sales and flea markets.

DINING ROOM

Michele’s dining area is directing in front of her staircase. So many of the pieces like the dining room table are found treasures. On top of the table are bottle brush trees and cloches filled with nativities.

Simple garland with ribbon drape the stairs. This is different from last year and the year before. Michele uses things in different spaces and unique ways so everything looks fresh and new.

The tree, however, looks the same year to year. It’s filled with vintage cards, ornaments, sprigs of garland and shards of glass. The reflection in the neutral tree is so beautiful!

LIVING ROOM

The family room is so warm and inviting. There is a new addition of soldiers guarding the hearth. And they are a drug store find, believe it or not. The signature white garland of Michele drapes the mantel and houses and bottle brush trees line the shelves.

We always love the massive carriage house doors decorated with wreaths. Michele DIY’d these with grapevine wreaths that she pulled apart to give them some whimsey, then added sprigs of evergreen and ribbon to complete the look.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

SITTING AREA

The sitting room off the kitchen is a favorite place to hang out. It’s cozy and warm and the chef can interact with family and friends from the kitchen. The layers of rugs are another fun thing Michele does very well. Most people just layer a rectangle on top of another rectangle rug. Michele layers in different directions just to mix it up!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

BREAKFAST NOOK

The breakfast nook off the kitchen is so whimsical and charming. Ironstone bowels filled with paper whites make the perfect table display! And hutches are lined with Christmas trees. Nature inspired touches are throughout!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

PRIMARY BEDROOM

The primary bedroom is the coziest with the warm wood on the vaulted ceiling. Toy soldiers are on display on the dresser and a simple tree in the corner. We love her big tobacco basket with a wreath layered over it.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

The guest room is simply the sweetest! The neutrals pack a punch here too! Last year Michele did a Christmas tree with plates on the wall. This year she brought the idea into the guest room using vintage silver trays. I’m not sure which item did it better.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

We always enjoy the outdoor space at Michele’s. The outdoor dining table changes all the time. Pop a cork and this table is ready to host a party!

The mantel is dressed with greenery and stockings are hung by the fire. The great thing about living in Texas is this space can be enjoyed year round!

Christmas Home Tour 2022

The best christmas decorating ideas for your home in 2022.

Welcome to my Christmas Home Tour for 2022.

Enjoy this virtual tour of my home decorated for the Christmas holiday season, and I hope that you find some ideas and inspiration for your own home.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

The holiday season is here! It’s time to spend time together with family and enjoy Christmas traditions.

I love this time of year and all of the decor that comes along with it. It’s been my tradition every year to decorate our home. And while it may get a little overwhelming at times, I still love bringing out all of the Christmas decorations.

When it comes to Christmas decorating, I tend to reuse decor year after year. I’m more of a traditionalist in that sense, because I think our Christmas decorations can be a type of tradition.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

It’s so fun to pull out the decorations year after year and bring back memories of Christmas in the past.

Just like with my fall decor , I try to use mostly decor that I already have. But I’m not opposed to picking up a few new pieces to add to my collection each year. I’ll share some of the new pieces I’ve found and incorporated this year throughout the tour.

This year for my Christmas decorating, I went with a timeless, classic, and casual feel. I wanted to create a festive holiday vibe by incorporating a few extra details to help elevate the look of my decor. I also tried to incorporate some basic neutrals that can work beyond the Christmas season, and just layer in the traditional Christmas decor.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I love the trend of vintage, classic Christmas this year. I’m seeing so many traditional colors, patterns, textures, and decor pieces. Things like classic greenery, brass accents, Christmas plaid, and traditional colors like Christmas red and deep green are all making a comeback this year. It’s like a return to the nostalgia of the Christmases in our past!

Today, I’m taking you on a tour through my home decorated for Christmas. As usual, this home tour post is picture heavy! So grab your favorite warm drink and get cozy.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Let’s start the tour!

Christmas Entry Decor

The entry to our home is small, so I like to decorate it just a little for the holiday season. Since we live in a townhome, and because of the way our home is positioned, almost no one uses our front door. So over the years, I’ve decided to display my seasonal wreaths inside the door. That way I can actually see them and enjoy them.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

This beautiful wreath is a sale find that I grabbed from McGee and Co years ago! I love it! I layered it with some black bells and on the door handle I hung another strand of jingle bells. Simple and elegant for the Christmas season.

Christmas Living Room Decor

Next, let’s go upstairs to the main living areas. Once you walk upstairs, the first space you see is the living room.

Here’s how I decorated our living room for Christmas.

This is the main gathering area of our home and also where we put up our main Christmas tree.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Seasonal Christmas Pillows

On the couch, I decided to keep some of my core pieces like throw pillows neutral for the holiday season. That way I could bring in accent colors through my Christmas decor.

I layered a few different pillow covers in neutral and muted green tones to create a cozy, gathered feel on the couch.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Try to use pillows that contrast your couch to add some visual interest. Since my couch is dark, I decided to use lighter color pillows in whites, creams, neutrals, and muted greens.

Pillows can help finish off a space and tie in other colors that you use throughout the rest of your decor in a space.

An easy way to pair pillows is to combine a neutral pillow, a textured pillow, and a patterned pillow. If you want more help with throw pillow combinations, check out this post all about throw pillows and how to style them in your home.

Neutral Christmas Pillows

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On the end tables, I created two small seasonal vignettes.

On the left side, I have two beautiful dark green bottle brush trees. To complete the styling set of three, I added this small black reindeer figurine. It’s actually an ornament that I found this year. I just cut off the ribbon and used it as a decor piece instead.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On the other end table, I created a different seasonal vignette.

The white ceramic house is a piece I’ve had for years. I used a few decor books as risers to prop up the house and give it a little more height. Then, I added a vintage looking vase with some seasonal greenery.

Finally, I completed my styled look with a nutcracker figurine . This is another new ornament I found this year. I just removed the ribbon and used it as a decor piece instead. I love the warmth that the wood tone of the nutcracker brings to this small space.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Classic Christmas Decor

This year I wanted my Christmas decor to feel timeless and classic. My goal was to bring in some warmer colors and textures to contrast with a lot of the white I have in my home. This can help to warm things up and make it feel cozy while also keeping things neutral.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I pulled out this cozy red throw blanket to use as an accent in the living room. It is both practical as a warm cozy throw blanket and decorative in the living room.

Using a throw blanket is a great way to add in some colorful accents in your space. This season, I’m loving the classic Christmas reds and deep burgundy.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Plaid patterns are also great for holiday decorating. They are a timeless and classic pattern that fit perfectly with seasonal decor. Plaid pieces like throw blankets and pillows can layer in a subtle pattern in your space which helps to make things feel collected, intentional, and cozy.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Plaid Throw Blankets

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Create a Christmas Vignette

One of the areas that I love to decorate the most for each season is the media center over on the other side of our living room.

I wanted to create a holiday vignette on top of the media center to showcase some of my favorite decor pieces and help to tie everything together in the space.

The first piece I added to this vignette was the large statement “Joy” artwork. I like to prop pieces of decor like art against the wall. It helps to give my styling a casual feel and provides a nice backdrop for the rest of the decor pieces.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I used a few decor books as risers again to add some visual interest to this vintage vase. Inside the vase I added a few holiday greenery stems.

Create a Designer Look with Ribbon

To add a most festive feel to this space, and introduce some of that deep, classic Christmas red color, I added this beautiful chiffon ribbon around the vase. I just tied a long piece of it into a bow around the top of the vase.

Adding ribbon is a great way to add layers to your decor and make it feel a little more designer.

If you invest in some pretty accent ribbons, you can use them in so many different ways around your home. They help to tie in any accent color throughout a space and help to dress everything up a little for the holiday season.

Brass Accents for Christmas

There was just enough room next to the vase to layer in my new vintage looking brass bell .

One of my favorite accents to use when decorating for Christmas is brass. Brass details like vintage looking bells and muted gold tone decor pieces are classic accents that will add so much warmth to your space. They’re perfect for holiday styling because they have such a timeless look.

Try to look for pieces that have warm, brass tones to decorate with this Christmas season.

I found this vintage looking bell this year. It’s actually an ornament , but it’s another piece where I removed the ribbon that it came with and replaced it with this rich, velvet ribbon instead. I think it’s a great dupe for the McGee and Co vintage Christmas bell .

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

These reindeer figurines were another great way to incorporate brass into my vignette decor and coordinated well with the brass bell.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

To balance the other side of the vignette, I added this beautiful wooden Christmas tree in a dark rich wood tone. It has a lot of height so it added just the right amount of balance with the vase on the other side.

I finished the area off with one of my favorite candles for the season – Tree Farm from Antique Candle Co.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Christmas TV Artwork

I also added some TV art to our smart TV. I think this is a great way to dress up your TV and help it blend with your Christmas home decor.

You don’t have to have Frame TV to display TV art. You can do this with just about any smart TV. Check out this post from Caitlin Marie Design for how to display TV art.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

This specific Christmas tv artwork was found on Etsy. You can find so many beautiful art options for very affordable prices.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Every year I love to display my Christmas village houses on the shelves above our TV. I’ve collected different houses throughout the years from thrift stores and just painted them all white to create a consistent look.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

To create that magical vibe and holiday ambience, I added a strand of fairy lights to each shelf. These help each of the houses to glow at night and it just looks so beautiful!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Christmas Garland Decor

One way to make your staircase the focal point of your home during the holidays is to add garlands.

Look for real touch greenery garlands for the most realistic look and feel.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Similar Garlands

The garland that I have on our stairs was one that I invested in years ago. It’s still my favorite, but it’s no longer sold. The best part is it already came with lights so I don’t have to add any to my garland to make it glow at night.

I layered the cedar garland with a faux eucalyptus garland .

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I anchored the garland to the staircase using black zip ties. Then, I draped the garland in two sections to create movement. Finally, I let the ends hang along the banister to make the garland look long and luxurious.

To add another layer and festive touch I added a DIY dried orange garland that I made last year. I love the contrast of the rich orange colors and the wood tones on the beads with the classic greenery.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

To elevate the look overall I added this vintage looking bell strand to the banister and draped it along the greenery. It’s just another brass element to help tie in with the rest of my holiday decor. And I love how the gold bells look when the garlands are lit up at night.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Since my garlands are pre-lit I didn’t need to add lights. But if you are creating your own garland look, make sure to add fairy lights to create ambience and that magical Christmas vibe in your home.

The shelves got an updated look for Christmas. I swapped out a bunch of my decor pieces for some more seasonal pieces and artwork.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

At the top I have a “Merry Christmas” DIY sign that I made years ago. I added in a few other decorative pieces.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Then on the next shelf down, I layered a pretty Christmas art print with a bowl of Christmas ornaments. I also have a styling group of three with a few vases and this matte black Christmas tree figurine .

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

We also have our nativity displayed on one of the lower shelves and a few other traditional decor pieces from my childhood.

Decorating a Real Christmas Tree

This year we again got a real, fresh Christmas tree. This year’s tree was beautiful and was so full and dense! It’s perfect for our home because we have so many ornaments to display.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I like to decorate our main Christmas tree with our family ornaments and pieces that we’ve collected over the years.

There’s combinations of my own ornaments from my childhood, my husband’s childhood ornaments, ones we’ve bought together, and now more ornaments that are my daughters. It’s fun to see all of the different pieces we’ve collected over the years.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

That wraps up the tour of our living room for Christmas. Let’s move on to a few other spaces I want to share with you this holiday season.

Christmas Powder Room Decor

Since we’ll be hosting more guests over the holiday season, I decided to change up the decor in my powder bathroom. This small bathroom is on the main level between the living room and the kitchen.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

One of my favorite areas to decorate in this space is the shelves . I like to play around with different decor for each season.

Christmas Vintage Artwork

An inexpensive way to change the look of a space for the season is to swap out the artwork. By switching the artwork in your frames, you can add to the ambience and create a completely different feel.

The best part about this kind of decorating is that it doesn’t have to be expensive at all!

First, search on Etsy for some printable artwork. For only a few dollars, you can get a number of art prints to use throughout your home for each season.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Once you’ve got your downloads, just print out your artwork at home on your normal printer. I used regular printer paper, but if you want to take it up a notch you can also print on watercolor paper.

For just a few dollars you can help bring in the cozy holiday vibes in any space of your home. Switch out your artwork each season to help things feel fresh and festive.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Christmas Dining Room Decor

Now let’s go over to the dining room.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Because the stairs are in the center of our home, the staircase garland continues from the living room into the dining room.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Looking across the house at the staircase and to the Christmas tree is one of my favorite views in our home especially during the Christmas season. At night everything is lit up and it’s just so magical!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On the console table , I decided to create another holiday vignette. This one is I think my favorite spot this year.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I knew I wanted to use these glass Christmas trees that I got from the Target Studio McGee collection a previous year. They are so beautiful and if you put a little battery powered candle under them they glow at night!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

How to Make a Tabletop Tree Look More Designer

I added a tabletop tree to the left side of the console table. This little burlap tree is one that I’ve had forever, but I found a new way to use it this year.

To give a basic tabletop tree a more designer look, try placing it inside of a crock or vase. This will help to make it look a little more styled and intentional.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I continued the red chiffon ribbon from our living room into this space by adding a simple bow to the vase with the tabletop tree. I love the coordination of the classic red and green in this space.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

To style the console table, I tried to stick with groups of threes. That seems to be the most pleasing to the eye when you are styling any space in your home.

I paired the tabletop tree in a vase with a beautiful wooden “Joy” figure. This is another piece I love to use year after year. The wood tones help to ground everything and bring in a more natural organic feel. It also brings in a lot of warmth to contrast with the bright white vase.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Then, I completed the grouping with a votive vase filled with a battery operated tea light candle . Candles are an easy way to complete a styling group of three. You can use a pretty candle alone or use a candle inside a votive vase like I did here on the console table.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Under the console table I swapped out my throw blanket for another one of those beautiful rich red cozy throws.

To make a blanket look intentionally styled, try to hang the edge over the side of a basket. This creates an effortless look and also invites your guests to use the blanket if they want to.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On the other side of the dining room I made a few swaps to some of the shelf decor.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I added these cute vintage Santa mugs for a festive touch.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

This was also another location where I swapped my artwork for a more seasonal piece. This beautiful vintage tree print fits perfectly on these shelves.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

A new piece that I found this year was this adorable snowman family. It was a HomeGoods find and I knew my daughter would absolutely love it! I placed it on the shelf next to a pinecone Christmas tree to complete the snowy, wintery look.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I also swapped out some of my floral stems for more Christmas greenery. To bring in a natural, organic feel to the space, I added some dried orange to a simple glass vase. This is an inexpensive and easy to decorate and fill a styling group.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

These dried oranges were a DIY that I did last year. I saved them to use year after year because oranges look beautiful with Christmas decor.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I have one extra festive Christmas pillow that is pretty bold. So I decided to style it in the dining space on the bench. I think it adds just enough color and fun to this area.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

We don’t have a fireplace in our home, so we’ve always hung our stockings on this ladder. My husband made it for our family years ago, but you can use just about any blanket ladder in a similar way.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I have stocking holders, but if you use a blanket ladder, you can hang stockings from simple “S” hooks .

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Now that we’re finished in the dining room, let’s head upstairs to the primary bedroom.

Christmas Bedroom Decor

The last stop on our Christmas home tour is the primary bedroom.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

If you are familiar with some of my past home tours , you’ll notice one major change in this space for the season. I finally upgraded our bedding!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Cozy Christmas Bedding

We’ve needed new bedding for so long, but I’ve been trying to hold off because it can get so expensive.

I realized that our old duvet cover had shrunk after washing (we’ve had it forever) and it was compressing our duvet. It made it feel like we were actually sleeping with queen bedding on a king bed.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

So this year, I saved up and finally splurged on a beautiful new duvet cover and a super cozy textured blanket . I love how cozy everything feels now and how luxurious quality bedding can make your space feel.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On top of the bed, I layered this beautiful olive green throw blanket from Arhaus. It has a waffle texture and is just the right amount of accent color on top of the neutral bedding.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I swapped my throw pillow covers for some holiday neutrals. The large euro pillow covers are a plaid in muted green and beige. And the accent pillow cover in the front is a deeper green color with a textured fringe edge.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Over on our shelves, I didn’t switch out too many things. But I did add a few seasonal decor pieces to change the look just a little bit.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On the top I kept the minimal branches in a large vase that I had from fall . I think they still work for winter. Someday I would love to have tons of Christmas greenery branches in here, but this year it just wasn’t in the budget.

I placed a neutral wooden reindeer figure in front of some layered artwork to add a Christmas feel. And I placed a small votive with a battery operated tea light on top of the book stack.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I have two sets of these beautiful glass trees from a few years ago at Target. So I knew that I wanted the other set in our room for Christmas. They’re grouped together on a small wooden riser and are perfect to fill the space in the shelves.

Each tree has a small battery operated tea light candle inside so they glow at night.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Over on the other side of the shelves I just added a couple more seasonal elements. The large hurricane candle holder was a gift from my husband years ago and I love bringing it out each year. To dress up a simple bowl that I keep on the shelves year round, I added some shatterproof ornaments that I already had in my collection.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Bedroom Christmas Tree

This year I decided to upgrade our bedroom Christmas tree. In previous years, I had a flocked tree from Walmart that worked well, but was starting to drive me crazy. The flocking was always a mess and I bought it unlit, so every year I had to add a ton of lights.

I wanted to find something slightly slimmer for our room and also already pre-lit so I don’t have to worry about adding any lights.

During Amazon’s Black Friday sale this year I found this beautiful slim Christmas tree . I also had Amazon reward points, so I got it for a steal! It was the best time to find a new tree.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I decorated the tree with all new ornaments this year. I decided to do a more styled tree in this space instead of a traditional tree with family ornaments.

I ended up using a mix of three different sets of ornaments to create this look. All of the sets were also from Amazon.

The large clear balls with gold accents look so beautiful. They were the base for my tree design. Then I filled in with smaller copper colored ball ornaments . Finally, I added a different shape with these glitter snowflake ornaments .

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I used a tree topped that I had already from a previous Target Hearth and Hand with Magnolia collection. And I accented the ornaments with some tree picks that I also had in my collection from previous years.

Instead of using a real tree skirt, I just placed a fun fluffy white throw blanket under the tree.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

This year we moved the tree location to the other side of the room and I absolutely love it! This is the view when I walk into our room every day. And every night, the tree just glows, welcoming me into this cozy space after a long day.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I also created this pretty swag above our mirror this year. I combined two greenery stems together and attached them to the wall with command hooks. Then, I wrapped some scrap fabric in a festive red and white pattern around the middle to cover the stems.

Finally, I added more of the scrap ribbon to the arrangement in a large, oversized bow. I love how this dresses up and elevates a simple space in our room.

You can find scrap fabric at any craft store, but I found this remnant piece in Walmart’s scrap fabric section for only $6! It came with a ton of fabric that I can use in the future around my home.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Above our bed, I hung a simple greenery wreath. I love to add greenery around our home for the holiday season.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On our nightstands, I added a few pieces to style the space for the holidays.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

First, I swapped out the artwork in the front frames for some printable art from Etsy. This snowy evergreen tree print feels so cozy and helps to make the space feel like a cozy cabin.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I also swapped out the floral stems in this vase for some Christmas greenery.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On my husband’s nightstand I also swapped the artwork for another print from Etsy. This one is a beautiful cabin in the snowy winter woods .

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Then, I swapped the decor piece that I had on top of the books for this metal reindeer figure.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I love how cozy, calm and peaceful this space feels. It’s perfect for the Christmas season.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Also, I’m not sure if you noticed, but our cat Widget was sleeping on our bed during the entire photo shoot. She looked so cozy that I didn’t want to move her! So once I was done getting all my design shots, I also had to get some cat glamor shots!

Merry Christmas!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I hope you enjoyed this Christmas home tour and feel inspired to decorate your home for this holiday season.

Remember, you don’t have to go out and buy all new things. You can use Christmas decor you already have and make it a tradition to bring out those pieces every year.

Christmas is about celebrating the reason for the season. And that’s that Jesus Christ was born to be our Savior.

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season and a happy new year!

I think a wreath is a happy and hospitable way to welcome anyone who comes to our front door!

Most of the Christmas decor are things I already have. I like to challenge myself to use them in new and interesting ways.

But the wreath… it’s new! Cedar is a very popular green this year, and I am certainly on the cedar bandwagon! I opted not to use a bow on this wreath because it is gathered up at the top with twine. It’s a pretty and casual modern look.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

This wreath is huge! So it can easily be seen from the road!

Come on into the foyer!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

The heart of our foyer is this long white console table. And I packed it full of Christmas decor this year.

I’m not much of a collector but one thing I just can’t pass up are little trees! The console table holds some of my favorites plus a couple new additions.

You will see lots of little trees scattered throughout our Christmas home.

What do you collect?

One of the questions I get asked every year is how to decorate with what we collect. So this year I wrote a helpful post, DECORATING WITH CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS . And it has been one of my popular posts so far this year.

In the post, you can see the big difference in how I decorated last year compared to this year.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Did you notice the white and silver reindeer art? I love reindeer. They are adorable! But this reindeer is so majestic I decided to prop him up in the foyer to greet you!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

This year I took pictures with lots of lit candles! I took the photos over a three-day period and the last day was so dark and rainy. So I lit some of the candles and enjoyed the ambiance as I took pictures.

On the bottom shelf of the console, you will get a little clue about a color that plays a big part in our Christmas Home this year!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

If you love a Christmas home that looks cohesive and has a designer flair then the most important thing you can do is choose a Christmas color palette!

I’ve wanted to use red in my Christmas home for several years but I seemed to default to greens and neutrals which I love.

I decided early that this was the year to add red! A color palette helped me to keep on track. This year’s colors were inspired by last year’s CHRISTMAS MASTER BEDROOM .

I wanted to use the same colors plus a touch of red.

Here is my Christmas color palette this year…

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

A color palette makes decorating so much easier. You can see a very helpful post, HOW TO CHOOSE A PERFECT CHRISTMAS COLOR PALETTE here .

I think knowing our color palette and the style and feel we want our Christmas homes to radiate gives us a huge head start and makes decorating so much easier and enjoyable.

Let’s walk down our long foyer and head toward the living room.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Let’s take a quick pause by the stairs.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

The stairs look a whole lot different than they did last Christmas! This past summer we painted them and added a runner.

They were originally golden oak. Lots and lots of golden oak! Two stories worth of stairs!

The trouble with painting golden oak is the strong and noticeable grain in the wood. My husband and son worked together and found a quite easy fix for making the wood look much smoother! And they used a sprayer to paint the spindles. It was a big project but so worth it!

I’ll share how we transformed our stairs after the first of the year.

Garland on the stairs would be overkill so I opted for greens, ribbons, and vintage-looking Christmas balls.

I also used my favorite battery-operated candles on every other stair. They look so pretty in the evening!

THE LIVING ROOM

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

THE WHITE BUFFET

The white buffet is the first thing you notice in the living room. And the little upholstered stools too.

I found them earlier this fall and could not resist! I put one on either side of the buffet. I’m a big fan of symmetry! You can see these well-made stools HERE . They come in several colors.

On top of each stool, I added buffalo check pillows and little frosted wreaths (see them HERE ). The wreaths also hang in every window in our home.

I added a bit of red to this end of the living room with the red plaid gifts. I like this wrapping paper because the pattern looks light and airy for a plaid.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

On top of the present is my favorite Christmas bow. Here is a post about CHRISTMAS RIBBONS AND BOWS with a little video about how to make these fluffy bows.

On the buffet are a few more Christmas trees from my collection.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Some of my trees, like the little one above, are decades old.

In the center of the buffet, I put together an easy arrangement in a hammered brass bowl.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Arrangements and vignettes are the backbone of my Holiday decor. They are easy to make and can be styled in so many ways!

HOW TO CREATE A HOLIDAY VIGNETTE STEP-BY-STEP will give you lots of ideas for making pretty Christmas arrangements too. And a peek at our Christmas sunroom.

The mantel this year has an asymmetrical garland.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

The lit garland was hung using four 3M hooks. Lots of bits and pieces of greens were added to this garland to make it look lush.

I repeated the crisp brown and white ribbon that is also on the tree and on the newel post of the stairs.

I cut the ribbon about 5 feet long to keep making the loops manageable. And then I cut the ends of the ribbon into a classic French V’s.

On a last-minute whim, I added red wooden beads to the garland too!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I hung tree stockings at the short garland end of the mantel along with a few vintage Christmas ornaments.

Can you tell which stockings is mine?

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I kept the brown and white pillow on the spindle chair from the fall. I love these pretty little pillows and they worked with my Christmas color palette.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

THE COFFEE TABLE

In the middle-ish of the living room is the upholstered coffee table. This year I used a pretty glass mirror as a tray and added some of the smaller trees I collect that light up.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

And I added a bit of seeded eucalyptus.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Seeded eucalyptus is much airier and lighter than greens. It lets the reflective beauty and light of the mirror show through.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

THE CURLACUE CHEST

The Curlacue chest holds a white porcelain Holy Family.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Behind the little Nativity, I propped a light silhouette picture of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the star.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

THE CHRISTMAS TREE

This year, like last year, I used our heavily flocked Christmas tree.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I decorated it with mostly white, brown, bronze, and neutral ornaments and ribbons. And I used just a little bit of red too!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I like a tree that is full of things to look at! Ornaments, ribbons, ornaments, berries, and big stems of something pretty!

This is the first year I used a tree collar. It was white so I spray painted it an antique bronze to work with my colors. I’m now a fan! What do you think? Do you like a tree collar or skirt?

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I started to wrap some of our gifts to coordinate with our Christmas tree!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Our six little grandchildren (6 and under) could not stop touching the tree! They especially LOVED jingling the jingle bells. And that made it snow all over the floor and they loved that too! And so did I!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I saw the wonder and magic of a Christmas tree through their eyes! Christmas is just so special with grandkids!

Now let’s head to the dining area…

THE DINING AREA

The dining area is on the backside of the Christmas tree! So when we are eating we can see the entire tree from the other side!

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

I got a new rug for this area. It came yesterday. I took advantage of the early Black Friday sales. I always get indoor/outdoor type rugs in our dining room. They are so much easier to clean up. You can see the new rug HERE .

This Christmas season I kept the decor rather simple.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

But simple can be so pretty! I put greens down the center of our table and looped the same brown and white ribbon through them.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

And then I added this beautiful Capiz leaf garland (see it HERE on sale now).

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

A shallow-footed bowl in the center of the table holds seven, ruby red pomegranates.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

Well, friends, I have so much more to share with you like our Christmas kitchen…

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

And our sunroom…

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

And a couple bedrooms and more!

So stop back next Monday to see part 2 of our 2022 Merry And Bright Christmas Home Tour.

But now, please visit my very dear friend Julie at My Wee Abode . She is a California girl who is creative and one of the nicest people I know! When you stop by tell her I said Hi!

Just beautiful as always! I really love the brown and white ribbon throughout your displays. But I must say, my favorite were the arrangements on your stair posts. Love the sheer and striped ribbon together! So pretty! They deserve a diy post just by themselves. Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and good health. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing it with us!!

Hi Diana, thank you! Right now I have a horrid cold from the grandbabies, so I need a bit of good health! Merry Christmas!

I love your wreath at the front dorr. Did you create it by yourself?

And of course I love your whole decor in the house, too. : – )

Beautiful, as usual. How fortunate that Hobbes allows you to decorate the mantle- my Annie would bring it down faster than I could put it up.

Thanks, Emily! Merry Christmas.

I just love, love following your blog and all the creative ideas, how to and recipes you share. Your Christmas home tour is gorgeous and I have garnered many ideas. Would you please share how you attached the beautiful greens together, or did you use a teardrop swag on your newel post. My stair banister certainly would be an overkill but the greens would be perfect. I certainly could use any tips you would share. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I used a small cedar garland and folded it in half. I tied it to the bow and then tied the garland to the newel post. I hope this helps. So glad you enjoyed the tour. Merry Christmas, Beverly!

Amazing!!! I love the white and silver deer art on your foyer table. Is that something that is still available?

Hi Cassie, Merry Christmas! The deer art is from a local shop.

Yvonne, everything beautifully elegant as always. In love with the white and silver reindeer art and would love the link to purchase. Have a great holiday season. Helen

Hi Helen, that reindeer is very popular! I found it at a local shop and I don’t have a source. Sorry.

I love your blog and forward to reading each week. Where did you get the baskets on the bottom of your console table and on the Carolina Room near the tree??? Also love the brown color lumbar like Fall pillow, where did you find that one?? So appreciate the links in the Christmas ? articles.

I found it locally, Sorry Sabrina. The lumbar pillows were from Amazon and are not in stock. Things right now are flying off the shelves. So sorry.

Yvonne, your home looks beautiful for the holiday season.

Hi Yvonne! I love your pops of red and your tree is stunning–pinned! You’ve created such a welcoming, festive entry. Wishing you a joyous Christmas season. Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction

Cecilia, So sweet! Merry Christmas

I just love your elegant Christmas decor ! Where did you get that beautiful round wicker tray under your coffe table I have the same kind of ottoman and was looking for something exactly like that and also what size is it .

I found the basket tray at Wayfair. However, I don’t see it there anymore. Look on Wayfair, they have others you might like, Debbie.

Yvonne, your Christmas decor this year is spot on! It is so perfect, you have inspired me to use red next year.Bless you for sharing your beautiful decor with your followers. Have a wonderful Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

How sweet, Susan! I was surprised at how much I love red in our home.

Really beautiful! Love the color scheme and the nativity vignette is perfection!

Your home is so lovely. Such gorgeous details. So fun hopping with you this week. I adore your mantle decor.

Thank you, Renae.

Your home looks so cozy and inviting for the holidays, Yvonne. I love every detail. Christmas perfection! Happy to be hopping with you this week. Pinned!

Thanks, Jen! Merry Christmas.

Yvonne! Your home is definitely Merry and Bright! You have been blessed with the gift of decorating and curating a beautiful home and it blesses so many besides just your family! Thank you for sharing your home with us and the special touches and memories. I could just hear your grandkids laughing touching the tree and bells! Merry Christmas my friend and thanks for joining the tour!

Oh, Kelly! How sweet! I’m so thrilled to be part of your tour! Beautiful homes, beautiful women.

It’s all beautiful! I especially love the deer picture in your foyer. Like you, I’m not a collector but I do collect trees and deer for my Christmas vignettes. I use those little battery operated mini lights too. They are set to come on a 4:00 and off at 10:00. They lend that magical touch. My colour palette is mostly white with touches of gold and very small additions of red. Looking forward to the rest of your home tour.

Sounds so beautiful!

Beautiful as always!!!

Thank you, Andrea! I loved sharing our home with you!

Loved your tour! It’s always gorgeous!! Thanks so much for all the ideas!

Can you tell me where you found the framed quote “The Lord bless you and keep you”.

Here you go Kay: https://rstyle.me/+asiVZJz4zFnvERel1fh6dg

SOOOOO clean, light, bright and merry – Love everything Yvonne!! Would you mind sharing the source for the beautiful white footed bowl which is holding the pomegranates? LOVE it! Christmas blessings!

Yvonne, your home looks Christmas Beautiful! I love everything about it. I can’t wait to see your post in January about your stair redo. Merry Christmas!

Absolutely gorgeous!!!!

Wow! Your home looks gorgeous for the holiday season. Everything is so elegant and pretty! Love that tree! Pinned.

Thanks, AnnMarie

Your home looks beautiful for the holiday season!

Thanks Kim! Merry Christmas.

Okay… next year, for sure, I want to come at Christmas time! Tanglewood looks amazing, as always. I have to agree, the last minute decision to use the red beads on the mantel was a GREAT idea! And I thought I had a lot of ornaments on my tree! I have to go get my bins out of storage to fill all the ‘holes’ in my tree now! 😉 Can’t wait to see the kitchen and the sunroom… and the bedrooms, as well! LOVE those prints at the end of the counter! Love you, and always love working with you!

Yes, come at Christmastime next year! Lancaster has so much to do!

Merry and bright indeed Yvonne! The red is a big hit this year and I think you found the perfect balance. Everything is lovely and inviting as always. I love the mirror that you used as a tray on the ottoman. I want to try something like that on our round ottoman. Thank you for the inspiration! Happy Christmas!

Thank you Michelle! Merry Christmas!

Very beautiful and unique this yezr.. Some great deas gleamed. Thank you. I did try the link “Making A Bow” for wreath making but got a 404 error..page no longer exists. Hope you can fix that. Thank you

Sorry about that Susan, here you go: https://www.stonegableblog.com/christmas-ribbon-and-bows/

Stunning simplicity. Cozy yet elegant. Perfection! Thanks for sharing ?. I’m in love with the sunroom rug. Did you have it in your other home – do you have a source for it?

Hi! I love that added some color in your rooms. It really refresh’s the decor. Thanks for the tour. I’ll be back to view more?

I think so too! I’m just thinking about what color I can use for winter.

I loved the tour! Where did you find the three Santa-reindeer prints hanging on the wall at the end of your counter?

Hi Cheryl, they are a digital image that I had printed. See them here: https://rstyle.me/+KF99q9LEvHaISec3m95k6w

Beautiful tour, Yvonne! Love how your tree sits between the living and dining area so you can enjoy it all around.

Thanks, Lora. The tree can be seen from almost all of our downstairs rooms.

I love your touch of red throughout and the way you looped the ribbon in your garland! All beautiful!

I noticed you don’t show that beautiful mango bookshelf from this past spring or summer. I am in love with that. Would you be willing to share where you purchased it? I live about an hour away from your area and would love to drive down to the store and shop.

Hi Linda, I loved that bookshelf too. But it was really too big for the foyer so I gave it to a sweet young family. I found it at The Treasure Place in Intercourse. Hope this helps.

Wow Yvonne! Your home looks so beautiful! I adore that mirror! It’s incredible! Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas, Stacy!

Yvonne, Your home looks lovely this Christmas season!! The plaid pillows and touches of red are just the right touch of elegance and added interest. Lovely!!! Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to see the bedrooms! How do you keep your cat from creating mayhem with your Christmas tree? I heard cats are famous /infamous for climbing into trees. Nancee

Our cat, for some strange reason, has never touched the tree. Fingers crossed that he won’t this year.

I can’t tell you how much you inspire me with your home tours, Yvonne. Every detail is so beautiful from the little trees displayed throughout your gorgeous house to the bowl of pomegranates on the table. I am amazed by your talent when it comes to holiday ribbons. Both your Christmas tree and mantel are just stunning. Happy holidays!

You are just the sweetest, Kim! I feel the same way when I come to visit your home too! Merry Christmas!

You always so do Christmas so beautifully! I love all the pretty touches (especially that reindeer), Merry Christmas to you and your family. xx

Your holiday home is absolutely stunning, Yvonne! I love how elegant, yet cozy and inviting your home is! Your creativity and talent is such an inspiration. I am so happy to be touring with you. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

I’ve always looked forward to your Christmas tours every year, and this one is just as stunning as ever, Yvonne! I LOVE your small touches of red this year. And I’m pinning that mantel garland for sure. It’s gorgeous. Have a very Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas, Kate!

Hi Yvonne, I just was curious how you fit the tree in a “ collar “. Would that work with a real tree? It looks like a big planter. Looks lovely! Marianne

Hi Marianne, what a great question. The tree color comes in four parts. They click together with a magnet. You would have to know the measurements of your tree stand and then make sure it fits a collar. This is the first year we used a tree collar and won’t go back! Merry Christmas, Marianne.

Lovely house. So warm and inviting. May I ask where you bought the buffet? Thanks.

Hi Carol, I found it at Wayfair. Sorry, they don’t carry it any longer.

Yvonne, your home is beautifully decorated for the holiday season! Where did you get the silhouette in the frame behind the holy family. I love the idea! Merry Christmas!!

Hi Leslie, I found it here: https://rstyle.me/+jK-zgkNyH3UaY7J3wHhdYg

Your home is so lively, warm and inviting. I love all the white! Hoping you feel better soon so your holiday season is magical. Merry Christmas.

Thanks, Cindy!

Hello, I don’t leave replies often, but I had to reply this time. Your home is absolutely beautiful in all its Christmas decor! You did an amazingly festive job! Love it! Your tree is exquisite, and I like the idea that you used it again this year. All rooms shown are beautiful, and I am looking forward to viewing part two. Merry Christmas!

Thanks so much, Sandi. Merry Christmas.

Yvonne, I have been admiring your beautiful flocked tree for years. We decided to invest in fake tree this year and I’m wondering where you got yours. Would you mind passing on that to me?

Hi Cindy, We love our tree. It’s on the slim side and fits nicely in our living room. Here is is: https://rstyle.me/+8G6EEAomLrRLD18-5Scouw

Wow! There’s so much to love! I am definitely taking some ideas with me: The simple White Mary, Joseph and Jesus figurines with the picture of Bethlehem in the background, and just the perfect votives on each side to give it importance; the white bowl in the kitchen with pomegranates; your kitchen curtains, the understated beauty of your decorating. It’s all so beautiful! Thank you for the tour. I loved it very much.

Sweet Mary, thank you so much! Merry Christmas.

Stunning home tour, I love your style, everything about your decor speaks to my love of classic design.xx

Thank you so much, Janette! Merry Christmas.

Thank you for sharing your Beautiful home! You are so blessed with talent, I’m always in awe.

Merry Christmas. Rose.

Love the white reindeer print sitting on the chest in the foyer. Where did you get it? Do you know if it is still available? Everything is beautiful!

Thank you! I found the Reindeer locally. Sorry, I don’t have a source.

Christmas Pasts

As the only child of a single mom, we had a some Christmases that felt a little small and quiet.

And if I’m being vulnerable, some felt a bit sad…like something was missing.

During those times, I always thought ahead to the someday when I would have my own family.

I would picture what I hoped Christmas would be like and now I try to make it happen.

Everything you need to create a relaxing Outdoor Room

For those of you who are new to my page, Hello! I’m Jessica, wife to Cody, and mom to 2 boys and a girl, who are SO lucky because everyday with me is like an episode of carpool karaoke! They get a ride and a show! (OK, so I’m not a great singer, but do have enthusiasm). I have a background in architecture and designed this home that we just built in a small Texas town. We self-contracted the build, and now I’m working on a guide to help other families do the same! Most days you can find me on Instagram @the.old.barn

Significance of Making Memories

Maybe that’s why this time of year is so important to me. It’s why I try to make sure my family has fun, rich, beautiful memories at Christmas time.

Throughout this tour, I talk a bit about decor and try to give ideas and tips you can use in your own home, but I also talk about family time and making memories.

That’s the good stuff.

While we want our home to be beautiful at Christmastime, we also want it to be the setting for cherished time spent with those we love.

I like to decorate early, so I can spend the rest of the season doing all the fun things, like baking, puzzles, sipping cocoa while watching Christmas movies…

2022 Annual Christmas Home Tour

It’s 2022 Christmas Home tour day! We’ve had quite the year and I think this year, more than ever, I was desperate for the reward of embracing our house, covered in twinkle lights and happiness. My energy heading into the season wasn’t at peak performance level, but the more we did, the more motivated I was to see it through so we could enjoy the outcome.

As I do each year, I worked to mix color combos and dig into bins to revive decor that hasn’t been out in a while. I used a lot of stuff in different ways, some stuff in identical ways to last year, and also, as always, there’s still plenty left in the basement bins that will have to wait to see if next year is the year it comes out of hiding to be incorporated. Some spaces, I concept — at least generally in terms of color — a year in advance, and some spaces I concept on the fly, as I’m digging into bins.

We have multiple rooms that are in “transition” which limited some of our efforts — and I’ll share those as we go along — but there’s also some peeks of spaces that haven’t been shared just yet.

If you like elaborate Christmas decor, I have some of that. If you like simple Christmas decor, I have some of that, too. And if you prefer nostalgic, meaningful Christmas decor that’s family-centric, well, you’ll find that today, also 😉 Whether you’re a first time visitor or you’ve been a regular reader for a while, thank you for stopping in and for checking in on us today. Welcome and let’s head on in!

*Available sources can be found below photos throughout the post.

Full disclosure — we’re actually starting with a brief time travel back to last December, first, haha. I never have our outdoor decor finished by Home Tour Day, so if you didn’t come back to KN after last year’s tour, this could be the first time you’re seeing our these. We have out lights up and I’m hoping we’ll have the rest completed by Thanksgiving. I’ll definitely come back later when everything’s finished because I’m excited about a classic addition I’ve wanted to incorporate, literally, for 10 years that we’re finally doing this year.

Outdoor Christmas Lights and Decor

Y’all, I love THESE faux magnolia branches  so much (if you’re a regular, you know this, haha) that I created the exact same arrangement in the entry as last year. I use them throughout fall and carry them through winter, too. I’ve invested with several at a time over the past few years so you’ll probably spy them in spots all around the house.

I don’t think I ever buy anything for bowls. My go-to move is to use leftovers or random finds in my old bins (strands, pinecones, balls, beads, bells, etc.) and toss them together. I love mixing matte/rustic items with shiny (like wooden beads and ornaments), or, in this case, pinecones and brass bells.

Dining Room

I said it last year and I’ll say it again — this is the time of year when I most love our dark, moody dining room. Everything I used, I already had, and some deep red hues are making their way out of hibernation for the first time in a while.

This crystal piece was my late grandmother’s and while it usually sits empty (it doesn’t hold water), faux berry branches made the perfect simple centerpiece.

2022 Christmas Home Tour

I think this is the first year I didn’t break out at least a few candlesticks, but I didn’t want to detract from the simplicity. And with only deep red ornament balls, the lightly flocked tree is uncomplicated and modest.

More and more, I’m appreciating the juxtaposition of organic meets glitz. And that especially shines through with the Christmas decor. It’s how I designed our dining room mini makeover — using most of the major pieces that were already in our room — and mixing them with more earthy elements, like THESE cement-style lamps .

Conversation Room

Directly across from the dining room, our conversation room awaits. I say this is the most “special” room at Christmas because it’s where the majority of the nostalgia and special family memories live. Situated next to our cabinet of family mementos (see the details and styling tips HERE ) is our family tree, filled with ornaments collected over the years.

I wrote a post last year with five tips to decorate a family Christmas tree HERE . No ornaments are off limits and everything goes. Eliza decorated the family tree with me this year and I loved her reaction to unwrapping each ornament. We’ll be decorating my mom’s tree later this week and with decades and decades of memories, it’s probably my favorite tree to tackle.

My mom also gifts Eliza a new interactive animal that moves/sings each Christmas season, so they all live at the base of the tree. I call it “home base” so after Eliza’s finished playing with them, she knows to take them back to “home base” for the night.

This tree is where Eliza’s book advent basket lives, too. You can find the details on that tradition we started last year HERE . I boxed up all the books last Christmas, and re-wrapped them all this year. I only subbed out a few of the more basic ones with new additions.

I just purchased THIS huge, heavy strand of two-toned terracotta beads on clearance and shared the score on Instagram. They quickly were made unavailable to ship but at time of publishing, they are BACK and available to ship! They retailed for $129 (these things are big! ) but are on clearance for $37.99 HERE ! I will be using them year-round but I couldn’t wait to get them on display.

I added THESE mirror faceted trees to our collection at the end of last season (and even used them as Valentine trees for immediate use!) Mine are the medium and large versions and can be found HERE .

I haven’t gifted my family their ornaments for this year just yet, but I’ll probably do that on Thanksgiving night!

Kitchen / Breakfast Nook

Remember my kitchen update post I shared recently ( HERE )? Well, we don’t have the walls painted just yet and the breakfast nook is in heavy transition (I just sold the sideboard today since the new one arrives tomorrow!), but we have made some more progress! I kept things really simple and minimal in both spaces since we could very well have painters/electricians in the house before the end of the year, working toward finishing these off.

I found this footed rattan bowl at Home Goods a while back and it’s huge . I haven’t been able to figure out how to use it, so I was happy that this season gave me a reason to pull it out for the first time!

Heading into the place I put most of my efforts each year, if you’re an email subscriber, you already got a first look at our tree a few weeks ago 😉 And if you aren’t, you can subscribe to emails HERE for exclusives. I think I say it each year, but this year’s tree may be my favorite ever. At least top three… here she is.

Living Room Christmas decor Ideas with Green

I’m just now realizing this may be the first time I’ve shared the living room with our new leather chairs  (mine are in vintage midnight). I first sat in them, in store, almost two years ago and fell in love with how comfortable they were. Fast forward to this spring and I finally ordered a pair. they come in several leather colors and options, and a few wood finishes. When the tree isn’t up, they won’t be next to the window — they’ll actually be pulled in closer to the sofa for more of an intimate conversation setting.

You can find my most visited blog post — a tutorial on how I add ribbon to the Christmas tree — HERE . This was the first year I left some of the ribbon tails out, in an effort to conserve a little of the ribbon, and I love the result! To cut a ‘v’ in the tail, I just fold the end of the ribbon in half and cut at a diagonal across — the same I would for a bow on a gift.

My favorite tree addition this year were THESE natural berry picks I found on Amazon, though. I ordered the pinkish green and was so pleased with how they look and feel in person. You’ll see them incorporated into the garland on the mantel, too. I know these will be a staple in the coming years, regardless of the themes and schemes I come up with.

Going with greens and naturals made it so easy to hit up my pillow stash and pull out some favorites I had on hand. THIS 22″ charcoal windowpane pillow has been a sofa staple for a few seasons now and transitioned from fall to holiday easily. It will stay in place through winter, too. You can find it at my fave pillow shop HERE . I’m really crushing on a lot of their pillows right now, especially THIS one …

THESE plaid throws are on sale right now and come in a TON of plaids and colors — my mom and I ordered three between the two of us.

I had ordered a few new pieces — namely wooden nutcrackers and bells well over a month ago, but with severe shipping delays, they still haven’t shipped. I’ll wait and hopefully use them next year.

I have two new Christmas decor additions this year though, that I adore. The first are these handcrafted wooden trees . They are exquisite in person and the craftsman is so talented. I can’t get over the tiny cuts.

The other is THIS handcrafted terracotta nativity . I have several nativity sets (I think I have five on display this year?!) and adore the large one I got last year, but it’s so big, with so many pieces, I didn’t have a spot for it this year. THIS one is perfectly sized for a shelf or table without commanding too much space requirement. I plan to use this one year after year.

I think the garland is the most fun to embellish because it’s big enough to get creative, but small enough where you don’t run out of steam. Here’s this year’s version…

I added in faux berries and cedar (or juniper, maybe?), live magnolia and eucalyptus, and bells to the sides. I found these bells at Hobby Lobby last year so I’m not sure if they brought them back, but I LOVE all the bells at McGee & Co. HERE , especially THESE. (on sale now!). Here’s the caveat though — I ordered some Christmas decor from them a while ago and they are experiencing big lags; I can’t say confidently that they would arrive in time this year.

Eliza hid one of our stocking hooks so I had to order a new set — I was thankful Amazon still had them in stock ( HERE ) — they really have been the best, pretty, simple hooks!

2022 Christmas Home Tour

The base of my garland is still my trusty Costco garland and I love to embellish the heck out of it. It’s a great go-to, classic pine garland for a great base, or even on its own. I wrote a post a couple years ago about my garland method HERE .

I also use the Costco garland on our banisters and railing. I embellished it similarly but not quite as much. I also didn’t embellish the entire strands. I focused around the post, took some of the fillers upwards just a bit, and then let the rest of the garland stand on its own. A great time and money saver 😉

On the console, I’ve displayed our framed Christmas card photos, again. I have a mish-mosh of pale wooden/natural frames and still have a few in back-stock for the coming years. This year’s cards are set to arrive on Friday so I’ll be glad to get it displayed with the others. I also pulled out a sparse faux pine I’ve had for at least 15 years, for the first time in a few years. I housed it inside a fluted PB planter I have since it’s in the off-season and isn’t currently on duty outside.

Because the tree and garland are so… extra (haha), it feels good to give the rest of the space a little bit of breathing room with some simplicity, clean linens, and just moments of strategically placed elements of glitz for cohesiveness and to tie the room together.

Welp, this may be the first year I don’t have a tree in the bedroom. I didn’t have the energy but I’m already missing it so I don’t know if I’ll really make it through the season without on. I may end up bringing one up and leaving it bare… we’ll see, haha. I may even rob Eliza’s playroom of a slim tree for the corner…

Eliza’s Bedroom

But even though our bedroom isn’t as spirited as it has been in the past (sad), I couldn’t wait to get in Eliza’s room. First — a quick story. As you probably know, we started transitioning Eliza to a big girl bedroom last year. I ordered her bed LAST YEAR . So, after Christmas last year, I went ahead and grabbed everything I needed to give her a purple tree to go with her new purple bedroom. Um… that poor girl still doesn’t have a bed. The original bed was finished and shipped in February. When it stopped progressing in the tracker, I continually called. Finally, in April, they admitted it was lost and they had to order a new one to be made. That order was on backorder for a while and then finally, I thought she was going to get her bed. This one made it to our house in September. Well, actually, it made it to the street in front of our house. When the delivery people started taking it out of the truck, they realized it had been essentially demolished in transit and there wasn’t a single salvageable piece to leave. Bed attempt #3 — I’ve been told it’s on its way to the delivery center and I should be getting a call to schedule delivery any day now… this has been going on a few weeks though so I won’t hold my breath, haha. So, she still doesn’t have her purple bedroom and is perfectly content with her mattress on the floor… but she still got a purple tree 😉 And it’s my favorite she’s ever had in her room…

It’s just a shame she doesn’t have a bedroom to give the full, coordinating effect. But that’s me — not her. She is thrilled with this little corner magic. I surprised her with it when she got home from school one day and it was all worth it. (Until she was distracted by a tennis ball and switched focus 1.5 minutes after seeing her tree and room additions, haha).

Little Girls Purple Christmas Decor for their Bedroom

I continue to shop the spring florals (they are always on such deep discount at craft stores by fall!) and these pretty little buds just made her tree.

Eliza couldn’t get enough of the holiday decorating this year, which made me really excited for the years to come. She used some of the most colorful decor that we already had and decorated her playroom. Here are a few snippets — I love her creative little imagination and she was so proud.

I would love to take the time to create meaningful spaces like that. Eliza will have priceless childhood memories Way to go, Kelley! God Bless!!

Hi Laurie, Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to leave a note. I love this time of year and hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

You are THE QUEEN of Christmas trees! Your house looks so amazing, you certainly covered the spectrum this year! So beautiful. I particularly love your main tree in the big room ,but, Eliza’s tree is just perfection! The colours, the florals and the ribbon! Have a wonderful Christmas together and I am looking forward to your upcoming posts. God bless.

Everything is so beautiful! Do you have the link and/or dimensions for the tray the nativity set is sitting on in Eliza’s room?

Hi Janet, Thank you for taking the time to visit! Eliza’s nativity set is sitting on a marble coaster that I’ve had for years. The dimensions are approximately 4″ x 6″.

Oh my what a fabulous home tour, I actually think you are the queen of Christmas decorations. I love your home all through the year but Christmas is my favourite. Every tree is stunning, every surface beautifully decorated. Thank you for another fabulous tour.

Wendy, Thank you so much for visiting and for your kind note. I really appreciate you following along with us through the years!

Kelley, this is such a beautiful Christmas tour of your lovely home. I saved some of the pictures to use as background on my computer…and to add to my favorites of two years ago! Your beautiful creations are such an inspiration to me! God bless you and your precious little family 💕🙇

Paula, Thank you for taking the time to visit and for your sweet blessings. I am incredibly flattered that you are using my pictures as the background on your computer. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Just simply stunning (as always). I love your restraint by adding until it’s just enough. So elegant. So warm. So beautiful. (If you wake up some morning and your family room tree is missing, don’t blame me . . . )

Sharon, I appreciate your sweet comments so much! You are so right that it would be much easier to put out all of the things… But I’ve learned through the years that if I don’t bring out a favorite Christmas item this year, it will make an appearance the next year or the next. Thank you for following along with us!

So beautiful, stunning and serene. You have a fabulous eye.

Lynn, Thank you for taking the time to visit and for your kind note. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season!

Everything is so beautiful! I especially love the red with your dark dining room and completely agree that the flowers in Eliza’s tree are the shining star <3.

Hi April, I so appreciate you taking the time to stop by and for your kind note. Thank you for noticing my simple tree in the dining room. It was the perfect place to incorporate the dark red. And Eliza’s purple tree is one of my favorites. Happy holidays to you and yours!

Kelly all of your Christmas trees and decor are stunning. I can’t pick a fav this year! 🌲

Vanessa, I always appreciate your sweet support! Thank you for taking the time to visit.

Elegant and stunning! I love how you use non traditional Christmas colors in some rooms and it is still so beautiful and timeless.

Hi Lauren, Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to leave a note. Merry Christmas!

You’re the best Kelley! Everything is just beautiful.

Ann, You are too kind and I so appreciate you taking the time to visit!

I absolutely love the green tree! My kitchen has pale green granite and is open to dining and living rooms.. I have been looking for some pale green ornaments. Thanks for the idea of just spray painting some old ones. Could you please tell me the brand and color of the paint you used?

Thank you, Sherry! The color is Breezeway by Behr in a satin finish. I hope this helps!

It’s all so gorgeous! Where did you get your outdoor red Christmas bows?

Gail, Thank you for taking the time to visit! My outdoor red bows came from Hobby Lobby.

Love it! So Beautiful!!!!

Dina, Thank you so much for your sweet note. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Everything was amazing. I am so excited that I saw your post today. What a talented young lady you are. Keep doing what you do you have a gift.

Love your ideas & decorating. Thank you for the inspirations!

Christmas Home Tour

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays! This is the first “official” Eleanor Rose Home holiday home tour, and I am so excited to open our home to you, to share how we’ve styled it for Christmas. I love getting a peek inside other peoples’ home, especially around the holidays, and so I hope you enjoy this tour of our home!

If you’ve been here for any length of time, you know that I use the same design philosophies no matter the season or the holiday. And Christmas is no different. I like to decorate our home simply & beautifully utilizing new, old, & everyday pieces, with a touch nature & neutral colors. Nostalgia is an important part of how I keep our home as well. I love when a smell or a sound brings me back to a found childhood memory of Christmas’ past, don’t you? My hope is that I am cultivating some of those memories for my children in our home. For me, creating a cozy, warm, and comforting home for my family at Christmastime or anytime is essential.

Christmas Home Tour: The Entryway

The first stop on our Christmas home tour is the entryway.

Christmas Home Tour

Looking out of the entryway you will notice the woodline. We live on on about 2.5 acres of land on the south coast of Massachusetts, with woods surrounding our entire property. It may not look like much now, but when the trees are full of foliage, it’s gorgeous! We love the natural beauty that surrounds our home, and the privacy too.

Christmas Entryway

We updated our entryway a few years ago by adding beadboard and hooks to the right of the front door. The farmhouse style hooks are a great place to for guests to hang jackets & coats when entering our home. Our entryway is small, so utilizing every square inch of space is key to keeping a neat & tidy entrance.

This past fall, we updated the entryway again by adding Morris & Co. wallpaper, which you can read about more in this blog post .

Christmas Entryway

My favorite part of the entryway (besides the wallpaper), is the shelf! This is one of my favorite spaces to decorate in our home. It’s one of the first things people see when they enter our home, so I always make sure it looks welcoming & inviting.

To style our entryway for Christmas, I hung a faux cedar garland from the shelf with an orange garland layered over top. And, on top of the shelf, I simply placed three ceramic houses. (These ceramic houses are no longer available but you can shop other similar houses I’ve found, here .)

Christmas Home Tour

I hung a group of vintage looking bells from ribbon on one of the farmhouse hooks, and added a vintage sled to complete the space. Our entryway feels warm & cozy, and I think the décor will easily transition into winter once Christmas is over.

Shop our entryway, here .

Christmas Home Tour

Right off the entryway is our downstairs bathroom. In all honesty, our bathrooms do not receive much seasonal décor. I usually just like to change out the hand towels along with a few fresh florals, and that is about the extent of the seasonal decorating in our bathrooms.

Here, I just added a Christmas hand towel, and a small mercury glass vase filled with cream colored roses and a few pine boughs for a Christmassy touch.

Christmas Home Tour: The Kitchen

Right off the entryway, you enter our kitchen.

Christmas Home Tour

The kitchen is truly the heart of our home during the holidays. From baking Christmas cookies to preparing for holiday gatherings, the kitchen is always in a hustle & bustle this time of year.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

This was the first year I hung wreaths to our counter stools ( shop our stools here , use code eleanorrose10 at checkout for 10% off your purchase), and let me tell you…it will not be the last!!!

I took these 15″ faux pine wreaths and hung them with my favorite Noel Christmas ribbon . Floppy ribbon is my favorite, so the bows I made with the ribbon are long to flop down onto the wreath. I kept the tails of the ribbon fairly long (make sure to finish the ribbon ends by cutting an upside down “V”) for a more dramatic effect.

I love how the simple addition of the wreaths gave our kitchen a festive, cozy feeling!

Hot Cocoa Bar

This hot cocoa station was something fun I put together for our family a few weeks ago. The hot cocoa was warm & comforting and everyone enjoyed adding assorted toppings to their cups of hot cocoa. You can read more about how to recreate this hot cocoa station and grab my decadent crockpot hot cocoa recipe, here .

Hot Cocoa Station

Grab your free printable tags that I used to label the jars of hot cocoa toppings, here .

Christmas Shelf

Our kitchen is one of the only places in our home where you will find pops of red for Christmas (I know, I know, what can I say…I’m a lover of neutral colors!).

On our open kitchen shelf, you will find pops of red from our small collection of Santa mugs! I adore Santa mugs and cannot bear to keep them in the cabinet this time of year. They are just too cute!

Kitchen Christmas Shelf

Since our Santa mug collection is small, I brought out other neutral colored mugs to style on the shelves as well. This is a actually great tip for decorating your home on a budget. Decorate with everyday items! Bring out your mugs, plates, bowls from the cabinet and use them as shelf décor.

Christmas Home Tour

This corner of our kitchen is very dark, especially now that the days are shorter and the nights longer. So, adding a lamp to the counter made our kitchen not only appear brighter but feel cozier too.

Want to up the cozy factor even more? Tie a ribbon to your lamp!

Kitchen Island Centerpiece

On our kitchen island, I recently added this rosemary tree centerpiece. I filled a long basket with three rosemary trees (I found mine at Trader Joe’s), and added some mercury glass baubles to fill in the basket around the trees. Then, I placed a small plate with a candle surrounded by fresh cranberries next to the basket. This centerpiece was so refreshing and festive!

For a closer look, check out this reel I made on Instagram .

Christmas Home Tour: The Living Room

Next stop on our home tour, the living room. Besides the kitchen, this is the space that we typically spend most of our time.

Christmas Home Tour

We love gathering as a family in the living room after a long day to watch Christmas movies! This is the one time of year where all four of us can agree on what to watch. You can see the list of our favorite Christmas movies, here .

Cozy Christmas

Throw pillows and blankets are a must in our home when watching movies, especially during the cold months of winter. I change out our pillow & blankets seasonally adding thicker textured blankets for winter, and lighter, breathable ones for summer.

Eleanor can never resist a warm cozy blanket on the couch!

Christmas Home Tour

This year, I really didn’t do much updating to our bookshelves for Christmas. By adding a couple of seasonal throw pillow to the window seats, and candles & greenery to the shelves, I was able to easily update our bookshelves from fall to the holidays.

Christmas Home Tour

The focal point of our living room at Christmastime…the Christmas tree! Our Christmas tree is decorated with neutral glass baubles, glittery houses, beaded acorns, dried orange slices, ribbon, and small battery operated candles .

The twinkling lights of the Christmas tree at night makes our living room feel warm & inviting, and I almost wish we could keep the Christmas tree up all year long.

Christmas Tree

Don’t forget to decorate underneath the tree too! Use your wrapped Christmas gifts as décor. I love gifting our friends & family beautifully wrapped gifts. There is something magical when handing someone a beautifully wrapped gift, it makes the inside of the package even more special.

Christmas Home

I typically like to choose between 3-4 coordinating wrapping papers to wrap our Christmas gifts, along with coordinating ribbon and various embellishments. I wrap gifts as I buy them for a couple of reasons. One, doing a little wrapping at a time is less stressful. And two, I love to admire the wrapped gifts under the tree all season long!

Shop our living room, here .

Christmas Home Tour: Master Bedroom

The final stop on this Christmas home tour is our master bedroom.

Christmas Home Tour

There is not a whole lot of decorating I do in our bedroom, and I think you can see why. The large floral wallpaper on the wall behind our bed is truly the star of the room! Because the wallpaper is so bold, the rest of the décor in our bedroom is simple yet beautiful.

Christmas Master Bedroom

Our bedding is not necessarily “Christmassy” but it is warm & cozy for winter nonetheless. Layers are essential for a cozy bed along with a mix of textures. On our bed we have floral flannel sheets, a blue velvet blanket, topped with a cotton gingham checked duvet. I love crawling into our cozy bed after a long day!

Christmas Home Tour

Do you have a Christmas tree in your bedroom? If not, I highly suggest you add one! It adds the perfect glow to our room.

I had every intention of decorating our bedroom Christmas tree but it is still naked. In all honesty, I am kind of loving it. The flocking of the tree is beautiful all on it’s own, however the real reason I think I’m loving it naked? I won’t have to un-decorate it after Christmas!

Christmas Home Tour

Even though I didn’t decorate our bedroom Christmas tree, I did manage to find some cute houses to add underneath the tree! The colors of these little cardboard houses match perfectly with the floral wallpaper, so I thought they looked so cute here. I found these at our local Target Dollar Spot, so if you like these, check out a Target near you.

Shop our bedroom, here .

That concludes the first annual Eleanor Rose Home Christmas home tour! I hope you enjoyed this tour of our home as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you. I look forward to making this an annual holiday tradition for many years to come.

Hi Amelia, Yes flocked trees will shed more than other trees. The only time this is really a problem is when you’re putting up & taking down the trees. Otherwise they shouldn’t shed much during the season.

I absolutely love all of your flocked trees! I’ve been thinking of getting one myself, but I’m curious if they shed a lot more than other trees? I just had my carpets cleaned and I’m really not wanting to dirty them quickly haha!

Thank you so much Kathi! I appreciate your kind words!!!

Your home is absolutely stunning…just can’t pick one scene I like the best…such a tasteful Holiday Home.

I was invited by my friends before Christmas to make a Christmas design at their house. So I flew to Orlando. That’s why I decided to rent a car here

Take a walk through the most ancient Kremlin in Russia

The Novgorod Kremlin, which is also called ‘Detinets’, is located on the left bank of the Volkhov River. The first fortified settlement was set here during the reign of prince Vladimir Yaroslavich, the son of Yaroslav the Wise. During these times, all the state, public and religious life of Novgorod was concentrated here. It was the place where people kept chronicles and copied the texts of books. The Novgorod Kremlin, the most ancient one in Russia, was founded here in the 15th century.

St. Sophia Cathedral (11th century), The Millennium Of Russia Monument, Episcopal Chamber (15th century) and the main exhibition of The State Novgorod Museum-reservation located in a public office building of the 18th century are all situated in the Novgorod Kremlin. The exhibition will tell you about the whole Novgorod history from ancient times to the present day. There are also restoration workshops, a children’s center, a library and a philharmonic inside the Kremlin walls.

Send a letter with the State Novgorod Museum-reservation stamp

While visiting the main building of the Novgorod Kremlin museum, you’ll see a small bureau near the souvenir area. Two more bureaus like that can be found in the Fine Arts Museum and the Museum information centre. This is the Museum Post, the joint project of the State Novgorod Museum-reservation and Russian Post.

christmas home tours 2022 youtube

The tradition to exchange letters (at that time written on birch bark sheets) dates back to the 11th century so it’s hardly surprising that such a project appeared here. The bureaus are desks and mailboxes at the same time, so you can send your friends a postcard with a view of Novgorod right from the museum.

Find the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin among the figures of The Millennium Of Russia Monument

In 1862, 1000 years after the Varangians were called to Russia, a monument dedicated to this event was launched in Novgorod. To tell the story of Russia’s one thousand years, the sculptor used 129 bronze figures: from state and military leaders to artists and poets.

One of figures portrays Afanasy Ordin-Nashchokin, a politician and reformer who was responsible for Russia’s diplomatic relations in the middle of the 17th century. He is believed to be the father of international and regular mail in Russia. He was also the person who came up with the idea of the first Russian Post official emblem — a post horn and a double-headed eagle.

Cross the Msta River over the first arch bridge in Russia

The steel bridge in Borovichi town that connects two banks of the Msta river was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The project of the bridge was created by Nikolay Belelyubsky, engineer and professor of St. Petersburg State Transport University. This is the first arch bridge in Russia.

In 1995, it was included in the national cultural heritage register. More than 100 bridges across Russia were developed by Belelyubsky, but only this one is named after him.

Cast a virtual bell

When in the Novgorod region, you’ll definitely hear bells ring and learn about the Novgorod Veche Bell. During the siege of the city, tsar Ivan III ordered to remove this bell from the bell tower and send it to Moscow. Legend says that the bell didn’t accept his fate, fell to the ground near the border of the Novgorod region and broke to pieces against the stones.

In the biggest Museum Bell Centre in Russia located in the Valday town, you can see bells from across the world and learn why Novgorod bells are unique. The museum’s collection represents bells from different countries and ages, some of them dating back to the 3rd century BC. You’ll learn about the history of casting and modern bell-making technologies and also play games on a touch table. For example, harness virtual ‘troika’ (three) horses with bells or cast a virtual bell.

Spot the pigeon on the cross of St. Sophia Cathedral

St. Sophia Cathedral was built in Novrogod between 1045 and 1050 by Kievan and Byzantine masters. It was conceived as the main cathedral of the city, and during its first years it was the only stone building in Novgorod. So where does the pigeon on the cross of the cathedral’s biggest dome come from?

Legend says that while tsar Ivan the Terrible and his Oprichniki were cruelly killing peaceful city folk in 1570, a pigeon suddenly sat down to the cross of the city’s main cathedral. It looked down, saw the massacre, and was literally petrified with horror. Since then the pigeon has been considered the defender of the city. People believe that as soon as the pigeon flies away from the cross, Novgorod will come to an end.

Visit a monastery, that was founded by Patriarch Nikon

The Valday Iver Monastery is situated on the island in the middle of the Valday lake. It is considered to be one of the most important and picturesque orthodox shrines.

The monastery was founded in 1653 by the initiative of Nikon who had just been elected Patriarch. Nikon wanted the monastery to look like the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, including the architectural style and monk’s clothes. Legend says that Nikon saw the spot for the monastery in a dream.

Check out Fyodor Dostoevsky’s country house

Fyodor Dostoevsky, a famous Russian writer, first visited Staraya Russa town in 1872 during a summer trip with his family. They liked it so much that the next year they rented a house near the Pererytitsa River’s embankment and spent every summer here ever since.

Dostoevsky loved this house, called it ‘his nest’ and considered it the perfect place to work and to be alone. In Staraya Russa he wrote his novels ‘The Adolescent’, ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ and ‘Demons’. Today, this place is a museum where you can explore what Dostoevsky’s house looked like and see his family’s personal belongings, photos and letters.

Learn what Brick Gothic looks like

The Episcopal Chamber of the Novgorod Kremlin is the only non-religious German Gothic building of the 15th century preserved in Russia. You can have a good look at the facets of the gothic cross-domed vaults inside the chamber. This is why this building is also called ‘Faceted Chamber’ or ‘Chamber of Facets’.

The chamber was part of Vladychny Dvor, the place where all important city events took place: court hearings, gatherings of the Council of Lords of the Novgorod Republic, ambassador’s receptions and feasts. The seals of the city’s lords were kept here. The decree of tsar Ivan III on merging the Novgorod Republic with the Moscow State was first announced in 1478 in Episcopal Chamber. This is when the name of the new state, Russia, was first pronounced.

See the murals by Theophanes the Greek

The Byzantine Empire had a huge impact on the development of the Russian culture. Many works of art and architecture in ancient Russia were created by Byzantine artists and masters. Theophanes the Greek was one of them. He was born in Byzantine and created icons and murals in Constantinople and Caffa (modern Feodosia). After that he moved to Novgorod where he was commissioned to paint the walls of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Ilyina Street. You can enjoy his unique and expressive style if you look at the murals inside the dome of the church and the Trinity side chapel.

The most recognizable and the only monumental work of Theophanes the Greek that is preserved today is the chest-high portrait of the Savior the Almighty in the dome of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

Take a photo with an ancient Novgorod citizen who is learning how to read and write

In 1951, a letter written on birch bark dating back to the 14–15th centuries was found in Veliky Novgorod. Many decades later, in 2019, a sculpture designed by Novgorod artist and sculptor Sergey Gaev appeared on this exact site.

The sculpture portrays an 8–year old boy sitting on a stool and holding a piece of birch bark. At this age children in Novgorod started to learn how to read and write. During archaeological excavations in Novgorod, scientists often found ancient handwriting practice books and children’s drawings on birch bark sheets.

Feel like an ancient viking or prince Rurik’s guest

Novgorod is one of the waypoints of the famous trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. The route passed through the Volkhov river. In the 9–10th centuries there was a fortified settlement of the Viking Age here.

Some scientists believe that Novgorod is named after this area which was called ‘Stary Gorod’ (‘Old City’) at that time. Some historians and archeologists consider this place to be the residence of Prince Rurik who was asked to rule the city in 862. That’s why this ancient settlement is called ‘Rurikovo Gorodische’ (‘Ruruk’s Old City’).

Learn more about the Soviet modernist architecture

On the bank of the Volkhov river near the Novgorod Kremlin, there is an incredible building that looks like a spaceship and contrasts strongly with the ancient buildings of the city.

This is the Fyodor Dostoevsky Theater of Dramatic Art that was built in 1987. It is one of the most striking examples of the Soviet modernist architecture. The theater was built for 10 years according to the project of architect Vladimir Somov.

See what an everyday life of Old Believers looks like

The Krestsy town in the Novgorod region has always been considered to be the center of the Novgorod Old Belief community, and it still is. Before the Soviet revolution there were three Old Believers churches here.

The Lyakova village, which is located not far from the town, used to be inhabited completely by Old Believers. You can learn more about their lifestyle in the local interactive museum. You’ll be introduced to Old Believers’ traditional crafts and ceremonies, drink tea with healing herbs and learn how to chop wood and use an old spinning wheel.

Buy a traditional embroidered tablecloth

A unique embroidery style that is now famous all over the world was born in the Staroye Rakhino village in the Novgorod province. By the middle of the 19th century, it had become a folk craft. Since then, linen tablecloths, towels and clothing items decorated with unusual ornaments have been popular not only among the locals, but also travellers.

In 1929, the first cooperative partnership of embroidery masters was created in Kresttsy. Later it turned into a factory that still operates today. The factory has a museum where embroidery traditions are preserved and new ornaments and technologies are created.

Find yourself in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, Staraya Russa town could be called ‘the salt cellar of Russia’. That’s because salt making was the main trade here up to the 19th century. A few years ago, the old craft was brought back to life, and construction of salt works began. Later, an interactive museum was launched based on the results of archaeological findings.

This museum recreates a typical medieval manor of Staraya Russa of the 12th century with living rooms, a bathhouse, workshops, a livestock pen and traditional peasant household items. In this museum, you can also buy salt which is made in the same way as 1000 years ago.

See the place where Suvorov started his Italian campaign

Alexander Suvorov’s manor in the Konchanskoe village, which has now become the museum of the great commander, was originally the place of his exile. Suvovor openly disagreed with the reform of Russian’s army based on the Prussian model, and Emperor Paul the First didn’t appreciate such behaviour. He first fired Suvorov and then sent him away to his family estate.

However, the exile lasted for only two years. The great commander started the military campaign straight from his house in the Konchanskoe. During this legendary expedition, he crossed the Alps and defeated the French army.
