The 10 Best Casino Cruises in the World

' src=

Are you fond of the idea of gambling it up while cruising your way to exotic destinations? Awesome! Today many cruise ships out there offer onboard fully-fledged casinos and don’t shy away from flaunting their best of both worlds.

While most stately casino liners offer the ambiance, and endless glitter and glitz, others stand out for providing the amenability of a smaller vessel.

Major ships and cruise lines feature casinos that rival inland casinos in size, acuity, and style. Although you — possibly — will feel like you’re walking into a casino in Macau or Vegas, casino liners feature a hoard of benefits that differ from land casinos.

To start with, the minimum wagers on at games on cruises are exceptionally low. This so much attracts the casual, low-bet gambler, and definitely inspires more occupants to play games.

For example, the minimum stakes range from $1 to $5 for table games, as well, there are lots of penny slots. No wonder you’ll also find non-gamblers trying their luck on sea.

Wagering in the casino is a typical cruise ship activity. For this reason, almost all casino cruises have table games, slots, and video poker. However, to make it to the list of “best casino cruises” a cruise liner’s casino’s got to offer a little more.

In this article, you’ll find a broad list of the world’s most luxurious casino cruises and what to anticipate as you play your preferred game while sailing the high seas.

Expect to learn about their offers in terms of games, payouts, hours of operation, and any other outstanding features, or service related to casino cruise companies.

While you are free to smash yourself aboard, some fleets don’t permit smoking. Here are the 9 top cruise lines that don’t allow smoking at all; Celebrity, Crystal, Cunard, Oceania, Seven Seas, Silversea, Regent, Seabourn, and Windstar.

The elegant Queen Mary 2 furnishes its voyagers with deluxe rooms and an owing library, which holds over 8,000 books. So far, this is the biggest collection that you can find at sea.

The cruiser also has an array of fun activities for children to keep them entertained. While at sea, patrons can attend educational classes, visit the gym, take in a show, chill out by the spa or pool, or enjoy several sports.

Every Princess runs tournaments, though some feature an invitation-only for the top competitors.

The 1,083-feet-long cruise ship entertains guests all day, every day.  Some of the onboard activities include painting and paddle tennis. And it doesn’t end there.

You can tour the boat and delight in some wine tasting, join games by the pool or drown in the traditional Champagne Waterfall.

Carnival offers 2 main feasting rooms, Reflections, and Horizons which feature first-rate items from the aboard steakhouse and provide them at an additional fee.

Still, there’s an assortment of dining options. The Lido buffet offers the whole lot from stir-fry to pasta. What’s more, there’s pizza delivery.

Cruise Ship Casino: What You Need To Know Before You Play

by Gary Bembridge · December 12, 2022

Two things made me realise I wasn’t doing gambling on cruises right. First, videos by Brian Christopher , the popular YouTube slot machine gambler, called “Major win on the Open Seas: Carnival Cruise “, and “Triple Up Massive Win on Carnival” showing you can win a lot. Second when I met “ Jens Away Cruising ” who told me about the perks she gets, including free cruises, despite saying she doesn’t gamble much money.

I felt it was time to explore cruise ship casinos and find out why you and I aren’t getting all of this.

#1 All Cruise ships have casinos?

First off, most ocean cruise ships have casinos. Although, Norwegian’s Pride of America, Viking Ocean Cruise, Disney, and Azamara ships do not. Nor do most expedition ships and river cruises.

Those cruise ships that do have them will feature them as a highlight in high traffic areas, often involving walking through them to get to and from the theatre – to encourage us to stop and play.

Cruise Ship Casino: What You Need To Know Before You Play

#2 Differences to land-based casinos?

The more I explored, the more I came across nine key differences to the land-based casinos that I love going to in places such as Las Vegas.

The most important thing I discovered is that the odds in cruise casinos are worse than they are on land.

I’m not an aficionado on the details, but I found gambling blogs and cruise blogs like Cruzely had articles with the details.

They say that in Las Vegas casinos, while slot machines are likely to pay 90% or higher, it’s rumoured to be only about 80% on cruise ships.

In Blackjack, which my partner Mark plays a lot of, he noted when playing on land, if he bids $10 and gets blackjack, he’ll get $15. But on the ship, only gets $12. Roulette also has lower payouts.

So, professional hardcore gamblers don’t see ships as attractive, but as I discuss later, gambling on ships can be lucrative for a different reason.

First, a few more differences between ship and land casinos.

Cruise ship casinos – Table Minimums

The table minimums are much lower on ships, I have played for as little as $3 per bet. But I have also seen it change based on where I am sailing.

I was on a Cunard Transatlantic Crossing from the UK to the US and the table minimums were really low. $3 on Blackjack. Once we got to New York to head down to the Caribbean, it increased to $5 as more Americans boarded.

The biggest change I saw was travelling in Asia, we’d sailed up from Australia to Hong Kong with $5 minimums. Once we got to Hong Kong and there were more Chinese guests onboard, the table minimums ramped up dramatically to $10.

Cruise Ship Casino: What You Need To Know Before You Play

More sociable

Because of this, it is much more recreational and sociable than land casinos. I find it much less intimidating to play the tables on ships.

The other gamblers are more friendly and much more forgiving of people like me who don’t fully know and “follow” the rules of Blackjack, like when to stick and so on.

In Las Vegas, it’s a different story. People really get on your case if you’re not sticking to the rules.

To make it easier, the lines always run classes showing and reminding me how to play all the games.

They all put on tournaments which are great for less experienced gamblers like myself, where for a smallish flat fee, like when I was recently on a Queen Mary 2 Crossing, I took part in a roulette competition for $30 with a pile of chips, and earlier this year on Oceania Marina in a slot’s competition for the same amount.

The winner pocketed a couple of hundred dollars. Not me, unfortunately!

Cruise ship casinos – Not open 24/7

Unlike on land, cruise casinos are not open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cruise ship casinos only open when cruising in international waters because of gambling regulations. So, if you are into gambling, cruises with sea days or those that leave ports early evening are best.

Even on sea days, while the slot machines will be open all day, the tables will have more restricted times unlike on land.

Age Difference

In most cruise casinos, passengers can gamble from the age of 18, versus 21 on land in the USA. Although, for many US departing or focused itineraries, like Alaska, and some of the Caribbean cruises like on MSC they stick to the 21 years.

Importantly though, on many cruise lines you can’t drink until 21, so you may not be able to drink in the casino.

Cruise Ship Casino: What You Need To Know Before You Play

Fewer Games

There are, of course, fewer games and fewer tables than in big land casinos

On cruise ships, I usually find four ways to gamble. Bingo, scratch cards, arcade games – like those coin pushers – and casino games, like slots and tables.

In terms of the tables, I always find Blackjack and some dealer-based poker games like Ultimate Texas Hold ‘em, and three card Caribbean Stud. I have not been on a cruise with regular poker games versus other guests, like the big tournaments on land. Though, I hear Norwegian and Royal Caribbean do sometimes. On most cruises it’s usually video poker game machines.

I do find a Roulette table on most and occasionally on the big ships a craps table. I’ve not seen Baccarat, but some do.

Sports gaming is not a big thing on cruises, yet. Although I found it on my recent Princess cruises on their App, which also has other games on it to play anywhere on the ship.

Cash or Cruise Card

The seventh key difference is I can use cash as on land, but I can also charge my gambling to my room via my cruise card.

And, some cruise lines even let me use my on-board credit to gamble, like when I was on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean, but not on Holland America. So, check if yours will.

To charge to my room, I put my cruise card in the slot machine and charge it. I’m not usually charged a fee. I avoid the on-board cash machines, as they have a big a fee to withdraw cash. I found if I charge when playing at a table, there also seems to be a fee.

Unlike in Las Vegas when I’ve finish playing, I print out a little slip which will shows my balance and I then put it in a machine to get the cash, on most cruise lines the balance goes onto my cruise card and must take my cruise card to the cashier and cash out.

The balance on the cruise card, does not offset my on-board account bill. It’s a separate thing. So, I must physically cash it out. Make sure you cash out on the last night so you don’t lose your money as it will not be refunded any other way.

Cruise Ship Casino: What You Need To Know Before You Play

Cruise ship casinos – Free Drinks

The next difference I noticed was no free drinks. In Las Vegas, waitresses come around offering free drinks. But I have found on most cruises, if I’m playing the slots, I start to earn some free drinks points and eventually earn some free drinks.

If playing on the tables, occasionally the pit boss might offer a round of drinks. But, generally speaking, there’s no free drinks.

One thing I discovered from T he Points Guy blog was if I had status with land-based casinos, I could get perks on a cruise, but not the other way around.

For example, if I had status with the MGM Rewards program, I could benefit on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity like discounts, onboard credits, and even complimentary cruises for the higher levels.

If I had Caesar rewards status, I could get discounts as high as 30% on Norwegian, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas.

Carnival would match my status with their Players Club Fund Match Program from any casino program.

#3 Similarities to land-based casinos?

Are the similarities to land-based casinos you may be asking by now?

Smoking unfortunately. Many casinos on cruise ships also allow smoking. It’s the one place that you can smoke indoors. Though it is changing with no smoking on my recent Celebrity, Cunard, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea and Seabourn trips.

Another similarity, unfortunately, is if you’re from the US you have to pay tax, even though you are out at sea. Normally the cruise line – if you’ve got a big win like over $1,200 in a payout – will give you the normal IRS forms. The rest of it you’re supposed to declare. If you come from the UK or other places, you don’t need to pay taxes because they don’t tax gambling wins.

Another key similarity, and one that has proven to be a game changer for many, is cruise line casino loyalty programs.

Cruise Ship Casino: What You Need To Know Before You Play

#4 Loyalty programs and Free Cruises?

These are different to the normal cruise loyalty programs, and many cruisers, like Jens Away cruising I mentioned earlier, uses them to get perks, freebies, and cruises.

I had always assumed you had to gamble, and loose a lot of money, but Jen showed me this is not the case if you gamble smarter. And talking to a Casino Host on board confirmed what she said.

All lines appear to have these programs. The most popular include Royal Caribbean’s Club Royal Rewards Program , Celebrity’s Celebrity Blue Chip, Carnival’s Players Club , and the Norwegian group Casinos At Sea .

No matter how big or small a gambler you are, Jen and the Casino Host recommended I do the following:

First, go to the casino on the first night, as most cruise lines give free slot play to use on the first day or two, and second while there, seek out the casino host and speak to them. Ask what the program is, if I need to sign up, and how to get perks. Most simply, work through the cruise card.

While the line can track exact spend if I play slots, some is more judgement by the Casino Host observing how much I am playing on the tables – so being on their radar is important as the Cruise Host manages and decides and allocates perks during the cruise.

How much do I need to gamble to get free cruises?

I looked at Royal Caribbean, as an example, and to get a free Interior cabin, I needed to get to the Prime level. That’s 2,500 points, where I earn one point per $5 gambled. In theory I’d have to place $12,500 in bets in a year.

However, Jen does not gamble that much and still gets free and discounted cruise offers across various lines including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Holland America every single week.

She says gambles between $1,000 and $2,500 on a cruise. She’s now been on 50 cruises and tracks the cost if she had paid the going rate versus her actual total out of pocket, which includes her gambling, drinks and any on board spend. She’s calculated she’s paid less than a third in total of what the value of the cruises she’s been on – even included gambling losses.

You can read in full how she does this in detail, including her tips by line that you can view right here on my blog .

If you read that, you will see she stresses getting on the Casino Host’s radar and into whatever line’s program at the start, if you want to go down this route. She suggests on your first cruise, assuming you will gamble the cost of the cruise, again you don’t have to lose it just bet that amount as once you are in you seem to keep getting the offers. And they are constant.

#5 Gamble responsibly

When gambling, never gamble more than you can afford to lose. What Mark and I do is we go on board with what we call our “gambling fund”. We have an envelope with the amount of money that we are prepared to lose, we cash out every night and once it’s gone, we stop.

I have put links here for the gambling responsibly sites in the US and the UK if you do need help or it becomes an issue.

Casinos on cruise ships may be smaller than the ones you see in Las Vegas, but there is no much difference between the two. Cruise lines offer some of the best and most popular games from physical and online casino real money . Here are the games you should play on a cruise ship casino:

Slot machines and table games

Cruise ship casinos have a range of slot machine options as well as table games, including blackjack and numerous poker games (Let it Ride, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Three Card, Carribean Stud).

You can play these games against the dealer. Some cruise ships have dealer-dealt tables for Texas Hold’em that’s played against other players, whereas others use electronic Poker Pro tables. But some ships don’t offer Texas Hold’em; therefore, if you are a fan of this game, you will want to confirm this before buying your ticket. You will also find at least one craps table and one roulette table, and only a few will have Baccarat.

Penny Slots

Nearly all cruise ship casinos have penny slots. But there are many variations on how to win. At one cent per variation, your one cent wager can cost you more than two dollars a go.

Higher risk tables

Only a few cruise ships offer this option. On some of the best cruise ships with casinos, if there are enough high rollers who want to play high stake games, it can be arranged. However, for the most part, tables are usually limited.

Blackjack, poker and slot tournaments

Most cruise ship casinos offer tournaments that you can take part in. The most common gambling tournaments include games like blackjack and slot. With most tournaments being buy-ins, you have to pay a certain amount of money before you can participate. On the upside, you will not spend any money during the tournament.

For some cruise ships , you can actually rebuy during poker and blackjack tournaments. Mostly, those who win in these tournaments get money, but on some shipping lines, winners get some special treats. This could be something like a free cruise for two.

Important Things You Need To Know About Cruise Ship Casino Games

Here are a few things you should know about casino games on a cruise ship:

  • Is cruise-ship casino open around the clock?

Cruise ship casinos only operate when the cruise ship is out there at sea. However, the casino can also open in port at regions where gambling is not illegal, such as Malta and Bermuda . Some shipping lines close casinos during the day even when the ship is sailing because they know that most people are busy doing other things during the day. Night hours may vary but most casinos on cruise ships don’t close until 2 or 3 AM. It is always important that you check your everyday cruise schedule for casino hours.

  • What’s the minimum age allowed on a cruise ship casino?

For most cruise ships , the required minimum age to play or be at their casino is 18 years. Some shipping lines have their minimum age at 21 on all sailings or certain sailings. If you would like to gamble, but you think you might be too young, make sure that you confirm with the cruise line or travel agent before booking.

  • How do I deposit money at a cruise ship casino?

Most cruise ship casinos allow you to deposit cash. You can also use your cruise card. When playing at the table, your cash money will be changed into chips or the price of the chips can be charged on your cruise card. Most slots use cruise cards, but some take cash. Only a few casinos in cruise ships are cash-only. Most ships have an ATM, but the withdrawal fee is usually very high. You may want to bring some bills if you are not sure about how the cruise ship casino works .

  • Do they offer free drinks in cruise ship casinos as they do in land casinos?

You can only get free drinks in cruise ship casinos where drinks are always free. Generally, you will have to pay as you do in the dining room or at the bar. If you are a member of the casino loyalty program at the cruise ship and have earned enough points, you might get some free drinks. However, most programs will require you to wager huge amounts of money before you can get drinks served.

  • Do cruise ship casinos have a loyalty club where I can get some perks and points?

Most cruise ship casinos have loyalty programs that are separate from the cruise line’s loyalty program. The more money you bet, the more points you earn. The rewards usually come in the form of free cruise sailings and drinks. To get a significant amount of points, you will have to bet a significant amount of money. You may end up spending more than what you will get for the reward. Keep in mind that the rewards you get on one cruise ship cannot be transferred to another ship.

  • Can I smoke in a cruise ship casino ?

This depends on the cruise ship you are sailing in. Most ships will allow you to smoke in their casinos . But some ships don’t allow smoking . So, you will want to make sure that you confirm this before bringing your cigarette on the cruise ship casino.

Free Cruises for Casino Lovers: How Gamblers Get Invited to Cruise for Free

By Tamara Hinson

August 7, 2024

If you’re the kind of cruise passenger who loves finding generous discounts, you might want to take a moment before reading this next sentence.

You’ve almost certainly sailed alongside passengers who have been invited to sail for free, lured onboard simply because they tend to visit casinos.

Cruise lines are notoriously tight-lipped about precisely what might prompt them to extend passengers an offer for a free cruise (port fees and taxes still must be paid), but it’s happening.

How to get a free cruise by gambling

“It’s 100 percent about the spend. These free trips are offered to people the cruise lines see spending money in the casino,” says cruise expert Gary Bembridge, who founded the Tips for Travellers blog and has more than 443,000 subscribers for his YouTube channel .

Bembridge regularly comes across passengers who’ve received this type of invitation. “On my last Holland America cruise, there was a group of 180 players who’d been invited on the sailing by the cruise line,” he says.

Almost every cruise line with onboard casinos already runs a loyalty program that could translate into future invitations. For example, in Royal Caribbean’s Club Royale scheme, passengers earn one point for every $5 spent on slot machines and every $10 spent on video poker machines, and the line offers perks, including complimentary future cruises, for gamblers who reach 100,000 points.

That would obviously require large sums of spending to qualify, but even if you’re not expecting to hit targets like that to earn free cruises through loyalty scheme channels, cruise lines might still invite you to sail anyway because of your general spending habits. Joining loyalty programs is still considered essential because it brings routine gamers to the cruise lines’ attention.

“The free cabin is definitely what gets us onboard,” says Texas-based Heather Renea, who takes about 5 cruises a year and is regularly offered complimentary cruises outside of loyalty points plans.

Renea isn’t exactly your average cruise ship gambler—she regularly spends $100,000 in onboard casinos during a single cruise—but many of the casino-loving cruise passengers we spoke to, including those who regularly receive invitations for free cabins, say invitations for free cruises aren’t necessarily reserved for the biggest of spenders.

Simply being a regular cruiser on a given cruise line may be enough to put you on the radar for freebies.

“You're not going to get an invite from a cruise line unless you've sailed with them before,” says Tampa-based casino fan Jim Daley, who takes 5 cruises annually (mostly with Princess and Holland America) and who says he is often contacted by cruise lines with offers of free sailings.

Another tip? Never underestimate how closely your gambling behavior is being watched.

“You're only as good as your last cruise, so if you don't play, or you play a lot less, offers for free cruises will stop,” says Daley.

Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson Stephanie Cardelle would not reveal specifics about what it takes to earn an invitation with her line, but several passengers we spoke to say they have received invites for complimentary cruises on NCL even though they didn’t hit the formal spending targets of its Casinos at Sea program.

“We deploy a wide range of offers to guests at all levels of the playing spectrum,” Cardelle said.

Cardelle advises regular gamblers to make sure they introduce themselves to the right people at the cruise line: “Guests are able to call the reservations department and speak to casino specialists who can outline any available offers.”

Land-based gambling may help earn free cruises

TipsforTravellers’s Bembridge believes that spending in land-based casinos can be a factor, too.

“Cruise lines will entice players with free cruises if they also have certain statuses with gambling loyalty programs in places such as Las Vegas,” says Bembridge. “Some lines are certainly more active in this regard—examples include Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, and Holland America.

NCL’s Cardelle confirmed that the her line weighs gamblers’ habits outside of cruising. “Norwegian Cruise Line partners with hundreds of independent casinos around the world—ones such as Caesars, PENN, and many more—to provide cruise invitations.”

Just how much money would a person have to wager at the tables in order to make it back in the form of a “free” cruise?

“It’s generally a dark art when it comes to free cruises for gamblers,” says John Scott, founder of the Cruises with Friends blog . “It all seems to be a bit random. I have a friend who hasn’t sailed with Royal Caribbean for 14 months but is getting regular offers for free cruises.”

Scott says Carnival seems to be more active with its invitations than other lines. “I’ve got another friend who has only sailed with Carnival Cruise Lines three times but who typically spends around $1,000 a day in the casino, and [they receive] weekly offers for free cruises.”

Getting noticed by the cruise lines for free cruises

Tampa-based casino fan Jim Daley believes a tactical approach is important.

“Your ADT (average daily theoretical) is key,” says Daley. This refers to the mathematical formula cruise lines use to predict how much money passengers will offload each day, irrespective of whether Lady Luck shows up. “Basically, the time spent playing is important,” says Jim. “So is the game. If you pick low volatility slots, or machines which offer lower payouts but which pay out more frequently, you can get great perks after spending just a few hundred dollars.”

Some high rollers who are eager to be invited will even go so far as to present cruise lines with a summary of their past casino spending. Organisations such as Casino Players Club (CPL), which makes its money by earning commissions paid out by cruise lines and casinos when CPL sends big spenders their way, are even willing to carry out the negotiations for free.

“Numerous cruise lines allow guests to present their gaming history and will determine if they’re willing to offer perks,” says Dr. Lee Heller, CEO of CPL. “But approaching all the cruise lines is a lot of work. One option is to use an independent agent—such as Casino Players Club—for the legwork.”

Still, the freebies-for-gamblers trend may be waning.

“Post-Covid, cruise lines were desperate to get people back onboard, and casinos were making tremendous offers, including to those who wouldn't normally qualify,” Heller says. “But cruise lines are starting to reduce these offers because cruise sales are so strong.”

But for now, even though it's not the most economical way to cruise for less, regular gamers are still being invited.

Utopia of the seas: the best dining, amenities and more on royal caribbean's newest ship.

Hop aboard the "World's Biggest Weekend" for sun, sand and nonstop fun.

Utopia of the Seas Review

A "Utopia" sign in front of a car with Cafe Promenade in the background on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas.

Jill Schildhouse

Key Takeaways

  • Utopia of the Seas is the second-largest cruise ship in the world (after Royal Caribbean 's Icon of the Seas), with 18 decks and 2,834 staterooms.
  • The party ship sails three- and four-night Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida. Most stop at the cruise line's private island , Perfect Day at CocoCay.
  • There are 22 dining venues, 13 bars and lounges, multiple pools and whirlpools, a surf simulator, mini golf, two casinos, a carousel and more.

Royal Caribbean has been making waves in 2024, with the rare release of two new ships in one year. The first was Icon of the Seas , the world's biggest cruise ship to date, which I was completely wowed by on my sailing during the media preview in January. The second is Utopia of the Seas, the world's second-largest cruise ship. I attended Utopia's three-day media preview sailing – it debuted to the public on July 19, 2024, the day after I disembarked.

The two megaships are similar in many ways: They both offer endless ways to dine and drink, have impressive family-friendly amenities, feature show-stopping entertainment and sail out of Florida. But they certainly aren't interchangeable, and there are plenty of differences that make the Utopia experience unique.

Utopia is an Oasis-class ship that can carry 5,668 guests at double occupancy and measures 1,188 feet from bow to stern. There are 2,290 crew on board from all over the world – and each one is dedicated to ensuring you have a great time.

Utopia is being billed as the "World's Biggest Weekend," which means partying is the main attraction. After cruising on the ship, I'd compare it to going all out on a weekend in Las Vegas . There's so much to see and do that you'll undoubtedly spend your time on board maximizing every moment – just know now that you won't be able to get to it all.

During the media preview sailing, Grammy-winning artist and songwriter Meghan Trainor was on board (with her entire family), serving in her role as Utopia's official godmother. She attended the naming ceremony with more than 4,000 partygoers, including the legendary Rev Run (of Run-DMC) and DJ Ruckus at the turntables, pumping out chart-toppers from the '80s, '90s and 2000s. On the final evening at sea, Trainor took center stage in the open-air AquaTheater and performed an hourlong concert of her biggest hits. It was an absolute blast. While these one-time experiences won't be available on a typical voyage, Utopia's nonstop party atmosphere is here to stay.

Find your perfect cruise

Utopia of the Seas itineraries 2024

"Perfect Day" letters behind turquoise water.

Utopia offers three- and four-night cruises from Port Canaveral, near Orlando, Florida , through the Bahamas and Western Caribbean. While there are a couple of one-off itineraries planned for 2025 – including a four-night Western Caribbean cruise that stops in Cozumel, Mexico – most passengers will choose between two main itineraries.

The first option is a three-night journey (Friday through Monday) that visits Nassau and Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. (There are no sea days on this itinerary.) The second option is a four-night cruise (Monday through Friday) that visits the same two ports, but adds a relaxing day at sea in between.

As someone who cruised on the three-night sailing, I highly recommend bumping up to the four-night voyage if you can swing it. Without the extra evening on the ship, I left quite a few stones unturned – mainly in the form of sold-out shows and restaurants and evening venues I didn't have enough time to explore.

Who should sail on Utopia of the Seas?

The arcade on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas.

This ship caters to two distinct crowds. The first is families with young children who are looking for plenty of activities to keep their kids entertained, while sneaking in some adult alone time. Honestly, you may be hard-pressed to even get your children to hang out with you, considering how many activities are catered to young travelers.

Utopia is home to the longest dry slide at sea, The Ultimate Abyss, as well as The Perfect Storm, where you'll find waterslides galore, including dual racer slides Typhoon and Cyclone. There are five pools on board, and the heart of the ship hosts live music, DJs, impromptu pool parties and contests.

Kids ages 3 through 11 can spend time at the Adventure Ocean youth program, which provides full days of complimentary supervised activities and entertainment. Meanwhile, Wonder Playscape features slides, climbing walls and other interactive features that have been completely reimagined for Utopia. If you have teens in tow, they'll love having their very own hangout, Social 100, with daily programming highlights like disco parties and game nights.

The second category of travelers who will love Utopia is young professionals (think: bachelorette parties, girlfriend getaways and couples) who are ready to party their weekend away. There are two casinos on board (including the nonsmoking Casino Royale), a karaoke bar, dance parties at Boleros Latin club, live music at a handful of venues each night, shows at The Attic comedy club and more.

The pool deck is a happening scene, and Central Park was my favorite spot to meet up for a glass of wine or cup of coffee – the perfect al fresco moment surrounded by lush greenery. For a little rest and relaxation, book massages at Vitality Spa or spend time unwinding at the adults-only Solarium pool, which is fitted with its own bar and whirlpools overlooking spectacular sea views.

The stateroom

And ocean view balcony cabin on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas.

I stayed in an ocean view balcony cabin and found it perfectly met my needs. In fact, I was almost surprised by how many thoughtful storage solutions there were, given that the longest sailing on the ship is currently only four nights. My cabin had plenty of drawers, closets and shelf space – not to mention some handy hooks built into the bedroom area. There was also a desk, a chair and a sofa, plus a nice-sized balcony with chairs. Several outlets and USB ports allowed me to charge multiple devices at once, and the decor was tranquil, using neutral colors with turquoise accents.

Utopia also offers several convenient suite types for families, including the larger-than-life Ultimate Family Suite, with three bedrooms that hold up to 10 guests and upgrades your kids will never forget, like an in-suite cinema room and karaoke station, a corner balcony with table tennis and a private whirlpool, and a two-story slide. To be clear, though, the price tag for this suite starts in the low five figures per guest (think: $11,000 per person – or more).

I rarely recommend interior cabins because I love sitting on my balcony and having natural light in the room, but budget-conscious travelers shouldn't hesitate to book one on Utopia. It's a great value, and with a ship as filled with over-the-top amenities as this one, you'll likely only be in your cabin to sleep (if you find time do that) and shower.

Travelers cruising with a small group can choose connecting rooms to ensure they don't miss out on a minute of togetherness, while couples looking to splurge a little will enjoy the Royal Loft Suite with a master loft, a living room, a private balcony with a whirlpool, a TV, a minibar and a whirlpool tub in the bathroom.

Best amenities on Utopia of the Seas

An AquaTheater show on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas at night.

One of my favorite things about Royal Caribbean cruises is the Vegas-style entertainment – and Utopia delivers a lineup of top-notch shows. On night one, I saw the original production "All In!" in the Royal Theater, which is a celebration of the history of music, from Studio 54 to Burning Man. I loved every minute, from the jazzy costumes and brilliant song selections to the intricate choreography and immense talent of the singers and dancers. The show incorporates eye-catching technology featuring drones, lasers and projection mapping, too.

I also enjoyed the action-packed "Aqua80Too" show in the AquaTheater, a live performance of world-class acrobats, extreme sports athletes and divers, set to '80s hits that had the entire audience singing and dancing. My only complaint about this production is that it was standing room only, even though I got there 15 minutes before showtime. If you'd like a more comfortable experience, be sure to reserve seats in the app before they sell out.

If shows aren't your thing, there are other activities all day and night, from sailaway parties and silent discos to line dance and salsa dance classes.

I spent a few hours during our sea day chilling in the lounge chairs in the shallow part of the pool, attempting to read a book … but there were too many juicy distractions. I eventually gave up and directed my full attention to the DJ-hosted dance contest and struck up conversations with other passengers sitting nearby.

In the evenings, I enjoyed listening to live covers of classic rock music in the Music Hall (this bi-level bar also has a pool table) and country tunes at The Mason Jar. The latter venue was always packed, so get there early if you want to nab a seat.

I'd heard about the Caribbean drinks and fun vibe at the Pesky Parrot, a colorful tiki bar with an animatronic parrot, but I never made it there in the evening to experience it myself. However, I did snoop around the bar during the day, and I wondered why Royal Caribbean decided to put it in the Royal Promenade instead of making it an outdoor venue on the pool deck or in Central Park.

Best dining venues on Utopia of the Seas

The Royal Railway dining venue on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas.

There are plenty of included dining options on Utopia, like the main dining room, Park Cafe (fresh grab-and-go snacks), El Loco Fresh (an outdoor Mexican buffet), Sorrento's (a pizza joint), the Windjammer buffet and Sprinkles ice cream.

On other Royal Caribbean ships, I've enjoyed such specialty restaurants as Giovanni's Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, Johnny Rockets, 150 Central Park (elevated, classic entrees) and the Chef's Table (an intimate five-course culinary journey led by the ship's Chef de Cuisine that I still think about six months later). With only three nights on Utopia, I decided to skip all of these and instead set my sights on venues I hadn't tried before.

One of the hottest tickets for dinner aboard Utopia is the Royal Railway, an immersive experience that involves stepping onto a replica of an old-timey train station platform. You're greeted with a welcome drink of moonshine in a glass flask before the conductor guides you to your seats. What follows is a four-course journey of Southwestern and American dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I ordered: the bread wagon, empanadas, braised short rib and a chocolate dessert.

During the ride, digital scenes of the American Frontier move along outside of the "windows" – the moment that began, a woman seated at my table immediately got up and ran out of the room due to motion sickness from the simulated experience (she never returned). I am prone to motion sickness myself, but thankfully I wasn't affected. The train makes its way across the countryside as a small cast of costumed characters act out an elaborate sheriff-catching-the-bandits sketch. (Note: Some elements are interactive, and you may get chosen to participate in a skit – nothing was embarrassing or required any physical exertion.)

I left with mixed feelings about this experience. The idea was fun, and the food was well executed, but there was never a lull in the entertainment, so I didn't have even a moment to chat with my tablemates or enjoy my food. I feel the act could be condensed to provide a little breathing room and some quiet moments, as it's a tight space and the actors are quite adept at projecting their voices. I think families with young kids might enjoy this venue the most, though the cost (starting at $74.99 per person) adds up quickly for a party of four.

Another night, I dined at Hooked Seafood, where I ordered the shrimp cocktail, oysters and The Captain's Platter, which consisted of Maine lobster, a fresh fish filet and shrimp. The entire meal was OK, but the ambiance was a bit lackluster, so I'm not sure I'd seek this venue out on future sailings.

Surprisingly, my dinner in the main dining room was my favorite of the sailing; the service was excellent, the food was tasty and there was no extra fee. Next time, I hope to try a meal at The Mason Jar, which serves Southern fare and is only found on one other Royal Caribbean ship: Wonder of the Seas . I'd also like to check out Izumi Hibachi and Sushi. Another venue I never got to was The Spare Tire, a cute food truck-style eatery on the pool deck perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat, without having to towel off.

Best excursions on Utopia of the Seas

Water park on Perfect Day at Coco Cay.

On my sailing, our only port stop was Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas . I've visited it three times this year, and I'm happy to report it always lives up to its name.

On the exclusive island, you'll find a beach club, a water park, several swimming pools and lagoons, and an adults-only area called Hideaway Beach (my favorite spot, because it's so chill). The island is also home to the tallest waterslide in North America; I was brave enough to ride it earlier this year, but I don't need to repeat that heart-pounding experience!

All food and nonalcoholic drinks are included while you're on the island (choose from burgers and hot dogs to chicken sandwiches and tacos, plus ice cream, lemonade, iced tea and juices), as are the beach and pool loungers, umbrellas and towels. There are also upgrades available if you'd like to enhance your experience, including alcoholic drinks, cabana rentals, and access to the water park and zip line.

Otherwise, shore excursion highlights in Nassau, Bahamas, include a sea lion or dolphin adventure, beach days spent at the Blue Lagoon Island (adults-only outings are available) and stingray encounters. And if you book the one sailing that docks in Cozumel, try a tequila mixology class, check out a turtle sanctuary or head to the Mayan ruins in Tulum .

Overall impressions of Utopia of the Seas

AquaTheatre show on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas during the daytime.

If you're looking for an around-the-clock party atmosphere on an enormous ship with a never-ending list of ways to spend your time, Utopia of the Seas is the ship for you. There's always something fun happening – and usually two or three things at once. In fact, your biggest struggle on board will be deciding how many activities you can fit into your schedule each day. Be sure to prioritize your must-do activities, restaurants, bars and shows early on, then fill in the gaps with any extras.

Vacationers yearning for a relaxing and quiet getaway may find Utopia's frenetic energy a bit much. There are truly very few places (outside of your cabin's balcony, if you have one) where you can enjoy some solitude and downtime.

Personally, I fell somewhere in the middle. I really enjoyed the experience and did my best to keep up a pace befitting the "World's Biggest Weekend," but three days was plenty. As I disembarked, I realized that on a ship like Utopia, it's up to you to create your own nirvana by setting a pace that's right for you.

Carnival Cruise Casino Guide: What to Know Before You Play

On any Carnival cruise, one of the most popular activities has to be spending a little time (and money) in the casino.

Casino on a Carnival Cruise

But we’ll be the first to tell you that while there’s a lot that’s similar to casinos on land, there are some major differences you should know about . And just in general there are tips and things to know about gambling on Carnival that are helpful to know before you sail.

That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the most important things to know about the casino on the ship.

Yes, the Ship Will Have a Casino

Tables casino games on Carnival games

First things first, if you’ve never sailed before you might be wondering if your ship will have a casino at all. The answer is a resounding yes. Every ship in the fleet comes with a casino, no matter its age. In fact, it’s one of the largest rooms on the entire ship, often second in size only to the main dining rooms.

So whether you’re sailing to Alaska, Australia, or Aruba, you Carnival cruise will have a place to gamble.

Open Hours Will Vary Depending on Ports

Open times for the ship casino

Typically casinos on land are open 24 hours a day. On a cruise, things work a little differently. Due to laws, casinos normally can’t operate when a ship is in port. In fact, they have to be a certain distance away from land before they are allowed to open.

So when the ship is in port, expect the casino to be closed (you can still enter and walk around, but the machines are disabled and there are no dealers). About an hour after leaving, however, it opens up and is available for play.

One other thing to note is that while machines will be open for play, tables are not manned 24 hours per day, even when at sea. Typically Carnival opens the tables with staff around 10 a.m. on sea days.

Age Limits Are Lower Than on Land

If you go play in Las Vegas, the age limit to play is 21 years old. However, on a Carnival ship, the age to play is just 18 years old.

Oddly enough, you can’t buy a drink or buy cigarettes on the cruise ship (the age minimum is 21 for these items), but you are able to play the slots or roll the dice.

Carnival’s Policy on Free Drinks While You Play

One staple of a casino is the waitstaff making laps around the casino floor offering free drinks to anyone that wants them. The reason being that for the cost of a relatively cheap drink, players are apt to keep playing and spending more in the casino.

On a cruise ship, however, drinks are a big moneymaker. Carnival charges around $12 for a cocktail (plus gratuity), meaning a free drink could be a significant hit to their revenue.

As a compromise, Carnival offers free drinks while you play if you reach a certain threshold of points on your player account. For cruises of four days or less, it’s 1,000 points. On trips of longer than that, it’s 1,500 points.

We’re not 100% sure, but on a recent cruise, it seemed like you earned 1 point for every dollar played. So reaching 1,000 points would mean you run $1,000 through the machine during the cruise.

What to Know About Cashing Out

best cruise line with casino

Know those printed vouchers you get whenever you cash out from a machine? Things work differently on Carnival.

When you play, you’ll need to have your Sail & Sign card inserted (this is your room keycard). This tracks your play, but also when you cash out, the money is credited to your player bank via the card. When you move machines, you insert your card in the new machine and the credit is uploaded to the new machine.

When you’re done playing, you’ll take your card to the cashier or the automated kiosks to get actual cash back in your hand.

Familiar Games, but Some May Surprise You

best cruise line with casino

If there is one place where a Carnival casino differs from a casino on land, then it’s going to be the games offered.

At first, you likely won’t notice anything that looks out of place. That’s because all the classic games will be on the floor. There are slot machines, video poker, blackjack, roulette, craps, and a number of table game variations — just like you’d see in Vegas.

But then Carnival has a number of games that are definitely unusual for most casinos. This includes:

Scratch-Offs: Yes, Carnival has their own lottery ticket scratch offs. You buy a ticket, hope to match the numbers or prize amounts and cash in.

Coin Pushers: You might have seen mechanical coin pushers at a carnival or arcade where you drop tokens to try and push other tokens off the edge. Carnival has these, but they use quarters instead of tokens.

“Skill” Games: You know the skill cranes where you try to pick up a prize with a claw? The ship will have this (or other variations of skill games) but it uses cash as the prize. Just keep in mind that if it was completely skill based, it wouldn’t be in a casino. Don’t be surprised if you just miss out on a prize.

Yes, There Is a Players Club

Want to be eligible for perks like drinks, invites to events, and even free cruises? If so, then you should know about the Carnival Players Club. It’s the cruise line’s casino loyalty program. You don’t have to do anything to register or sign up. All you do is play a machine with your Sail & Sign card inserted and it will track your play. If you’re at a table, show your card to the dealer to track your play.

Earn enough points and you can get everything from drinks included (see above) to comped meals on the ship, Carnival-branded gear, Platinum status benefits (normally reserved for people who’ve sailed the line… a lot) and spa treatments. Big players also get free or discounted cruise offers to encourage you to play more.

Again, there is nothing to sign up for. Your play is automatically tracked on your card.

Sports Betting Is Now Available

best cruise line with casino

A newer feature aboard Carnival ships plays off a big trend seen on land — sports betting. Many states have opened up wagering on games. At Carnival, you can do it at sea.

Casinos have kiosks (you might have to ask where to find it) that look like a small ATM. These allow you to place bets on that day’s sports action. You can bet on practically any major sport, including everything from winners to scores to player props.

If you want to watch the game, many (not all) Carnival ships have a sports bar onboard. There are also usually TVs showing sports in the casino so you can track your wagers in real time.

Limits to Appeal to Everyone

Not a big spender? There’s good news that you don’t have to spend a fortune to have fun in the ship’s casino.

If you like slots, then there are plenty of penny slots to play, although the minimum bets are generally $0.50 per spin or more. There are also a number of higher denominations to play.

As for table games, the minimums start at $5-$10. You might find some tables with higher minimums (such as $25 blackjack tables), but if you’re a low-stakes gambler, then you won’t have any trouble finding a spot to play. If you like to wager more, that’s always allowed. We’ve seen maximum wagers up to $2,500 on some tables.

The 10 Best Alaskan Cruise Lines to Set Sail and Watch Some Whales

Glaciers galore.

Author image: about face matte fluid eye paint review chelsea candelario

I’ve been a Caribbean cruise gal for years. I’m very familiar with the scorching sun and sandy beaches, so I never thought about venturing out into colder climates for vacation . But when my friend recently told me she booked a cruise to Alaska, I was intrigued. What on earth persuaded her to choose this anthesis of a tropical destination , especially for her first cruise destination, especially as her first cruise? As we chatted more about her upcoming excursions of whale watching and stunning views of icy glaciers, I was ready to book my own adventure to the largest peninsula in the Western Hemisphere. If you’re also ready to plan your next vacay, here are the ten best Alaskan cruise lines to check out.

1. Holland Cruise Line

I recently came across a Reddit post that asked readers for the best Alaskan cruise line recommendations. As I took time scanning the thread, I found the majority suggested Holland Cruise Line. One commenter raved, “Definitely Holland America…75 years in Alaska and [it] just won the Best Service Award from Cruise Critic.” While the cruise line sails through many destinations, they are known for their Alaskan voyages. Whether you go on a seven-day or two-week cruise, you can explore the glaciers, marine wildlife and national parks . According to their site, they claim to have more port departures than any other cruise line in Alaska. They also offer an Alaska Cruisetour, an ocean cruise  that provides a closer look inside the state along a scenic train ride with a three nights at Denali National Park.

  • Ships: Koningsdam, Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Volendam, Westerdam, Zuriderdam
  • Departure Cities: Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska, Vancouver, Seattle
  • Price Range: $809 to $5,514

2. Princess Cruise Line

I had the best experience on a Princess ship , so I can only imagine the Alaskan cruises are just as fun. They give a front-row seat to some of the largest glaciers in the world through their Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. You can spend a week sailing from Anchorage, Alaska to Vancouver, B.C. while popping into three historic ports (Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau). Also, consider adding an excursion to your itinerary, where you’ll get the best views of the ice. One more thing: Princess will be introducing longer voyages (I’m talking 22 days) in 2025, so you can have the full experience of being in the open sea starting in San Francisco.

  • Ships: Caribbean Princess, Coral Princess, Grand Princess, Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess
  • Departure Cities: ( Anchorage/Whittier) Alaska, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver
  • Price Range: $398 to $3,298

3. Norwegian Cruise Line

My friend picked Norwegian for her first Alaskan cruise and here’s what I learned about her top choice. Yes, the cruise provides spectacular views, but it’s the excursions that have her excited. She’ll have the opportunity to see wildlife in their IRL habitats, from orcas to grizzlies to bald eagles. You can watch them from the ship, balcony stateroom or you can book a closer view and schedule a trip to the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center. Did I mention there’s an excursion around hanging out with dogs at a dog sled camp? Yeah, I’m definitely jealous of my friend.

  • Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Spirit
  • Departure Cities: Seattle, Vancouver, (Seward) Alaska, Honolulu, (Anchorage/Whittier) Alaska
  • Price Range: $731 to $3,981

4. Cunard Cruises

One of the oldest cruise lines on the list, Cunard Cruises is praised for its Alaskan experience and being a great option for adults . Although it has one ship in its fleet—Queen Elizabeth—it has plenty of activities and amenities. Yes, you can take in the wildlife and open sea, but Cunard takes it a step further by having special guests, like writers, explorers and scientists come on board to teach you about the history and culture of Alaska. One redditor shared their experience writing: “A couple of folks already mentioned Cunard and I would recommend the same as well, especially if you are looking for the quintessential cruise experience. We went there this June [and visited] the Glacier Bay National Park with the rangers on board all day with lectures and Q&A. The food and service are excellent and [the ship has] very few children. Overall, classic and classy.”

  • Ships: Queen Elizabeth
  • Departure Cities: Seattle, Vancouver
  • Price Range: $1,059 to $1,869

5. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity offers three different types of cruises to explore Alaska. Admire the Dawes Glacier, a 600-foot tall wall of ice, as well as visit ports like Juneau and Skagway. Or, experience Hubbard Glacier, the biggest glacier spanning seven miles wide from Vancouver to North America, where you just might spot a whale or two. There’s also a one-way sail option that takes off from Vancouver or Seattle and cruises through ports like Ketchikan and Talkeetna—along with an option to extend your stay to explore even more of the greener areas of Alaska.

  • Ships: Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Edge
  • Departure Cities: (Seward) Alaska, Vancouver, Seattle
  • Price Range: $564 to $4,158

best alaskan cruise lines a photo of silversea ship at sea

6. Silversea Cruises

I said it before and I’ll say it again: Silversea is by far the most luxurious cruise line. If you’re heading to Alaska, expect an all-inclusive package and an intimate setting. Whether you board Silver Moon or Silver Muse, the guest capacity is around 1,000—and that’s guests and crew combined. Expect only suites on board, so you can get your own private viewing of mountains, glaciers, whales and more. Plus, the package you choose includes shore excursions like a trail hike to watch cascading waterfalls and Mendenhall glaciers or a culinary experience where you’ll try Alaska-themed food on a small expedition vessel and hopefully catch a glimpse of a humpback whale.

  • Ships: Silver Moon, Silver Nova, Silver Muse
  • Price Range: $3,300 to $20, 400

best alaskan cruise lines a photo of regent seven seas ship

7. Regent Seven Seas

Similar to Cunard, this cruise line has only one ship, but it’s all about Alaska. The Seven Seas Explorer features food, entertainment and accommodations that are oh-so luxurious. Take in the Mendenhall Glacier or the Tongass National Forest right from the comfort of your own balcony. Or, get a closer look and join a shore excursion like an ATV expedition, where you’ll drive around a remote island and take in the scenery on land. But if you’re a foodie, the Epicurean Explorer Tours offered by the cruise line combine travel and the culinary arts. One popular attraction is the George Inlet Lodge Crab Cake Expedition in Ketchikan. You’ll watch a chef prepare crab cakes and give you the chance to taste their creation. You’ll also have the opportunity to eat Dungenuss crab, learn about the area’s fishing and crabbing history and take in the surrounding views.

  • Ships: Seven Seas Explorer
  • Departure Cities: Vancouver, Seattle, (Seward) Alaska
  • Price Range: $5,599 to $12,999

best alaskan cruise lines a photo of royal caribbean ship

8. Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is by far the best cruise line for families , so why not take your kiddos on a trip they’ll never forget. The cruise line offers a great view of the landscape, like the Hubbard Glacier and Denali National Park. But it’s the ships themselves that take sightseeing to new heights. Step into the North Star, available on the Quantum of the Seas or Anthem of the Seas, an observation deck that soars 300 feet above sea level and provides a 360-degree view of your surroundings. It’s considered the tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship, and as long as you’re at least 42 inches tall, the whole family can enjoy this unique experience.

  • Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas
  • Departure Cities: (Seward) Alaska, Seattle, Vancouver
  • Price Range: $666 to $3,778

9. Viking

Interested in a longer voyage? Viking has long sail times, so you can take your time exploring Alaska and beyond. While most ships depart from Seattle or Vancouver, Viking is currently offering a Far East & Alaska trip. This cruise leaves out of Hong Kong, China, and makes its way through Japan, before stopping at multiple ports in Alaska. You’ll spend about 37 days in the Pacific, so be prepared to become a world traveler and an experienced explorer by the time you disembark.

  • Ships: Viking Sea, Viking Orion
  • Departure Cities: (Seward) Alaska, Seattle, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Australia
  • Price Range: $4,799 to $36,495

Best Expeditions

10. uncruise adventures.

Here’s for the fearless cruisers out there. Uncruise Adventures has all-inclusive expeditions for daredevils. Explore waterfalls at Red Bluff Bay, hike an abandoned coastal cannon at George Island, go brown bear searching in Chichagof Island or kayak in Keku Islands Park. Unlike a regular cruise, their ships host under 100 passengers, so it’s a much more intimate type of cruise. Just don’t forget to pack a good pair of hiking boots or sneakers.

  • Ships: Safari Voyager, Safari Endeavour, Safari Quest, Safari Explorer, Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Explorer, Wilderness Adventurer, Wilderness Legacy
  • Departure Cities: Seattle, Alaska
  • Price Range: $3,600

The 5 Best Cruise Lines For Singles, According To Reviews

V acations are not just a team sport — solo travelers are also in the game. That's especially true if you're single and ready to mingle while relaxing — which is when a cruise ship full of other eligibles comes in handy. Although this list doesn't comprise just singles cruises, these cruise lines, from Celebrity to Virgin Voyages, are known for uplifting the single crowd. It helps that some of their sailings also breeze through the top islands for solo travelers .

Cruises are increasingly popular with solo travelers. A 2023 survey indicated that over 70% of solo travelers would rather go on a cruise than a land-based holiday (as reported by Cruise Trade News ). "Solo travelers love the freedom to leave the ship and explore, but with the safety and comfort of returning to the crew and fellow travelers at the end of the day," Hazel McGuire, general manager of solo-focused Intrepid Travel, told National Geographic . She also reminded readers that not all solo travelers are single.

To determine which cruise lines are the best for single and solo cruisers, we took to the internet in search of reviews and opinions. Pack your most stylish threads, because we're looking for romance at sea.

Read more: Unsettling Reasons You May Want To Avoid Taking A Cruise

Celebrity Cruises

Aboard Celebrity Cruises, solo travelers are able to have their own stateroom built for a single cruiser. Per the cruise line's  website , there are also special events for solo travelers during sailings. Celebrity Cruises is one of the most LGBTQIA+ friendly lines and has even won solo traveling awards. If you're a single cruiser, you can do worse than boarding a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Elizabeth Wright outlined her solo experience onboard a Celebrity ship in an article for Cruise . She outlined how, after attending an LGBTQIA+ mixer on day one, she met some friends she spent a lot of time with on the cruise. Wright wrote that she appreciated the single staterooms had actual queen-sized beds, whereas her cabin had two twin beds pushed together. However, she also noted that there weren't any "solo-only events" during her sailing on the Celebrity Ascent.

Many Redditors highly recommend Celebrity for solo or single cruisers, especially if the ship has the special single cabins. One Reddit user even commended the cruise line for its solo-friendly eating arrangements for those meals you just want to be alone. "On Edge-class ships, there's a long shared table facing the window on each side of the buffet, perfect for solos," they wrote. "Even solo-friendly [Norwegian Cruise Line] doesn't offer solo buffet seating so kudos to Celebrity." Meanwhile, many users in the thread vented about Celebrity's pricing structure, saying that individual tickets can cost as much as sailing as a duo.

Holland America

Similar to Celebrity, Holland America also has a handful of single staterooms for its solo traveling cruisers. Plus, the cruise line is known for hosting events to help folks traveling alone meet other solos aboard the ship. It should be noted, however, that Holland has a reputation for hosting an older crowd compared to other cruise lines. Even so, the company doesn't charge an extra supplement fee for folks traveling alone in the solo cabins.

What makes Holland different from other ships on this list is its vibe. Some  Reddit users who have sailed solo with them appreciate that they don't have a party aesthetic. Another commenter  noted that they prefer the quieter nature of the ships. Furthermore,  Holland is one of the cruise lines with the best food .

One Holland cruiser commented in a Cruise Critic thread about singles events that their attendance varies day to day, so be proactive. They wrote of meeting other solo cruisers: "There are usually way more women than men [at the events]. You can take a proactive approach and suggest meeting for lunch in the [main dining room] and arrange it with the dining room manager." Another cruiser concurred that whether the singles events happened depended on the employee in charge.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Given that Norwegian Cruise Line was the first to build staterooms for singles, it is no shock to see the company on this list somewhere. Per the NCL website , these studio rooms do not have a single supplement fee, have private lounges for mingling, and the company hosts events for solo cruisers. These events can include things like pub crawls and cocktail-tasting classes. Did we mention NCL is among the lines with its own private island in the Caribbean for cruisers to enjoy? There is plenty to like here.

One Redditor recommended that single travelers attend events that aren't just centered around other solos to meet more people. NCL will assign single cruisers a concierge, another user explained. "Usually, NCL has an assigned solo traveler concierge service where they have daily sign ups for people who want to see a show together or dinner together," they wrote. "There is a bar inside the solo area open a couple hours a night. They have daily solo meetup ... all in all, I don't think any other cruise line comes close as far as catering to solo travelers than NCL."

Although the studio staterooms have their perks, they also have downsides. One cruiser on a Cruise Critic thread wrote that they were too small to enjoy outside of sleeping and getting ready for the day. Another traveler in the thread advised solos to shop around before committing to a studio since other cabins can sometimes be cheaper.

Princess Cruises

Despite not having single cabins like several other ships, Princess Cruises seems to cater to the same crowd. They do so by hosting singles nights and other events for solo cruisers. Previous travelers have attested on Cruise Critic that there are solo meetups or events nearly every day of sailing, although another Princess cruiser mentioned in the same thread that these gatherings aren't always well attended.

Princess also has an active social media community. Redditors suggest that single cruisers find their specific sailing to meet new people long before you climb aboard. Even if you don't find anyone beforehand, one Redditor wrote that there is ample opportunity on the ship between singles events and mealtimes. However, a traveler in a Cruise Critic thread called those solo activities "a mixed bag" that could be just awkward icebreakers.

Something else to keep in mind with Princess is that dining isn't always easy for single or solo cruisers. One Cruise Critic reviewer said they had issues at every dinner during their sailing. "Long lines if you had a res, [friend and I] asked to share and one time we actually ended up sharing a 6 top, another night they put me alone at an empty 6 top," they wrote. "The waiters were really nice though, they felt sorry for me I think."

Virgin Voyages

To no one's surprise, the adults-only Virgin Voyages is one of the best cruise lines for single travelers. Virgin has previously won awards for its solo travel-minded cruises, which feature events for partiers and quieter adventurers alike. As with the other lines, Virgin plans solo-friendly activities such as adult-oriented games and karaoke. This company also has single-cabin options without an additional fee for solo cruisers.

One of the main events for singles is the so-called Grog Walk (pub crawl), which one Redditor recommends cruisers sign up for right away since it always fills up quickly. The user also said that if you don't meet anyone at the meetups, try going to dinner at Gunbae, grab a high top at Test Kitchen, or hang at the bar at Pink Agave. Another Redditor suggested brunching at The Wake if you need another spot to meet new people. A Cruise Critic reviewer also mentioned that their sailing had several "special interest groups" for like-minded solos to get together.

While many travelers on  Reddit acknowledged the variety of ages aboard their Virgin Voyages trip, another reviewer noted that the variety on theirs skewed much older. Because of that, they didn't have a good time as a solo cruiser. It's generally believed that Virgin's target demographic is between 30 and 60, but the average age is actually 47.

How We Made Our Choices

To determine which cruise lines were best for single travelers, we turned to reviews from past travelers. Scoping out the conversations on Reddit and Cruise Critic, we determined that these were the best cruise lines for single travelers based on real experiences. We also used articles written by previous solo cruisers on their experiences.

7 Best Cruise Stocks to Buy Now

Many cruise stocks have yet to bounce back to their pre-pandemic prices, but the industry is seeing positive demand and revenue growth.

Cruise stocks can continue their run as long as travel demand stays strong.

After a gloomy performance during the pandemic, many cruise stocks have delivered gains for long-term investors. The cruise industry is poised to benefit from a multiyear boom, however, as Grand View Research projects that it will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 11.5% from now until 2030.

While growth was easy to find as the industry recovered from the pandemic, some cruise stocks have posted double-digit returns year to date. Many of these same companies have rising revenue and profit margins. But despite positive sentiment, many cruise stocks still have not returned to their pre-pandemic prices.

Cruise Stock Risks to Keep in Mind

With the pandemic largely in the rear-view mirror, the travel sector carries some risks. Some stocks are riskier than others, but John Engle, president of Almington Capital, says some risks specifically apply to cruise stocks.

"The biggest risk for cruise stocks is sustainable profitability," says Engle. "Many cruise operators are carrying an awful lot of debt, and it is not clear whether they will be able to service it over the long run. Thin profit margins and high debt should always be a cause for concern for investors looking at cyclical industries. Even a mild recession could be enough to devastate cruise operators' bottom lines."

An economic slowdown may be on the way. The latest U.S. jobs report, released earlier this month, revealed lower job growth than expected in July and a rising unemployment rate. Furthermore, some of the job growth numbers in previous months have been revised downward, meaning they were lower than the U.S. Labor Department initially reported.

Cruise stocks can continue their run as long as travel demand stays strong. However, any slowdowns can hurt cruise companies that carry significant debt. Cruise stock investors should carefully monitor travel demand to gauge the risk of their investments.

Investors seeking exposure to heightened travel demand may want to consider these seven top cruise stocks:

Carnival Corp. ( CCL )

Carnival's revenue and net income have continued to trend upward ever since the demand for travel returned. The company's second-quarter results revealed that sales increased by 17.7% year over year as total customer deposits reached a record $8.3 billion. That's more than $1.1 billion higher than the previous record.

Carnival also reported a record $560 million in operating income. That's nearly five times 2023 levels, and it accompanied a record $5.8 billion in second-quarter revenue.

The company raised its guidance for fiscal 2024, and its successes in 2024 should carry over into 2025, which can benefit long-term investors .

"We are very pleased with the continued acceleration of demand for 2025 and beyond, which builds upon the fantastic achievements in 2024 thus far," CEO Josh Weinstein said in Carnival's second-quarter earnings news release.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. ( RCL )

Royal Caribbean Cruises has returned to profitability with net profit margins above 20%. The cruise holding company raised full-year guidance after reporting solid results in the second quarter. Net income came in at $854 million compared to $459 million in the same quarter last year. That's an 86% year-over-year increase.

The total customer deposit balance reached $6.2 billion at the end of the second quarter. Furthermore, Royal Caribbean Cruises recently reinstated its dividend. Investors will receive a quarterly dividend of 40 cents per share. Heightened adjusted EPS guidance of $11.35 to $11.45 per share suggests a 68% year-over-year improvement.

Commentary from company President and CEO Jason Liberty suggests that business is booming.

"We have seen strength for all key products and are already taking more bookings for 2025 sailings than 2024," he states.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. ( NCLH )

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is yet another cruise operator raising its guidance, projecting full-year adjusted EBITDA of $2.35 billion, up from $2.3 billion. Norwegian also raised its full-year adjusted net income guidance from $730 million to $790 million, marking a $60 million increase.

The cruise company reported second-quarter revenue of $2.4 billion, which was 8% higher than the same quarter last year. GAAP net income came in at $163.4 million, which was a 90% year-over-year improvement.

Norwegian is on pace to achieve a double-digit adjusted return on invested capital by the end of the year. Adjusted EPS is expected to grow by approximately 120% compared to 2023.

Mark A. Kempa, executive vice president and chief financial officer, mentioned that the company has strong momentum and sees "robust demand" as it enters the second half of 2024.

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc. ( LIND )

Lindblad Expeditions is a smaller cruise stock with a $425 million market capitalization. The company reported 7% year-over-year sales growth in the first quarter. Demand continues to grow, as bookings for 2024 are 4% ahead of bookings for 2023. Available guest nights increased by 3% year over year, allowing Lindblad to accommodate more visitors.

The company's cash position increased from $187.3 million on Dec. 31 to $224.2 million as of March 31. That's a 19.7% increase. Lindblad is also in the middle of a stock buyback program. As of April 29, the company had used $23 million of the $35 million it authorized for share repurchases.

Agilysys Inc. ( AGYS )

Agilysys provides software for the hospitality industry, giving it some exposure to cruise lines. The company serves various sectors, such as hotels, resorts, stadiums and higher education.

Shares are off to a good start year to date, rising about 20% as of Aug. 5, and have more than quadrupled over the past five years.

The company delivered 13.3% year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. That marks its 10th consecutive record-revenue quarter. Subscription revenue, which now makes up more than half of total recurring revenue, increased by 32% year over year. As subscription revenue consists of a larger portion of the total business, Agilysys' revenue growth should accelerate. Net income attributable to shareholders soared from $1.1 million to $14.1 million year over year.

Agilysys anticipates generating $275 million to $280 million in revenue throughout fiscal 2025. Adjustable EBITDA is expected to be 16% of revenue.

OneSpaWorld Holdings Ltd. ( OSW )

OneSpaWorld Holdings provides spas, wellness and treatments on cruises and on land. Shares are up by 7.2% year to date and come with a dividend yield just above 1%. Revenue increased by 12% year over year in the second quarter, prompting the company to raise its fiscal year guidance.

The company operates health and wellness centers on 197 ships, compared to 183 ships in the same quarter last year. Net income reached $15.8 million, compared to a $3.2 million net loss in Q2 2023. OneSpaWorld Holdings anticipates 2024 revenue will range from $870 million to $890 million. The midpoint implies 10.8% year-over-year revenue growth compared to the $794 million generated in 2023.

"We remain confident in our ability to deliver strong operating and financial performance, both near term and long term, and increase value to our shareholders," CEO Leonard Fluxman said in OneSpaWorld's second-quarter earnings release.

World Kinect Corp. ( WKC )

World Kinect Corp., formerly known as World Fuel Services Corp., is an energy, commodities and services company. It has delivered over 18 billion gallons of fuel to more than 150,000 customers, including cruise lines. World Kinect's revenue was flat in the second quarter, but shares are up by 15% year to date. Diluted earnings per share soared by 277% year over year to reach $1.81.

Chairman and CEO Michael Kasbar noted that the company is facing short-term headwinds in its Land segment, but its Aviation business continues to soar. Gross profits for the aviation segment are up by 3% year over year and make up almost half of the the company's total gross profits. CFO Ira Birns said in the company's earnings release that World Kinect is focused on expense control and working capital management.

Should You Get On Board With Cruise Stocks?

Many cruise stocks have delivered rising revenue and profit margins and have raised their guidance for the rest of the year. Significant travel growth has helped cruise lines hit revenue records and achieve profitability.

However, cruise stocks have their risks. An economic slowdown can hamper their business model and make it more difficult to achieve double-digit year-over-year revenue growth.

Investors should also monitor how cruise lines cover their long-term debt and track whether the demand for travel remains elevated.
