Turquoise blue water and mountains at Wilsons Promontory

7 Best Things to do in Wilsons Prom

So you want to know the best things to see in Wilsons Promontory? You've come to the right place! As a Melbourne local and a frequent visitor of this stunning national park, I've got your back!

Covering over 50,000 hectares of land, the National Park is one of Victoria’s best-kept secrets full of Australian wildlife, white sand beaches, boulder-covered mountains, and native flora. A three-hour drive out of Melbourne, you want to make your time count! By planning ahead, you can fit a whole lot of sights and experiences into just a couple of days.

Read on to find out how you can maximize your time in this diverse landscape complete with a multitude of attractions and accommodation options.

Here are the best things to see in Wilsons Promontory:

1. Get Lost in the Sand Dunes at the Big Drift

Just as you enter the park, take a sharp right after the check-in booth and you’ll find the Stockyard campsite and carpark. From here, follow the signs for a 20-minute walk through bushlands and paddocks, up grassy hills and through tea trees until you reach the base of the Big Drift. Walk up the steep slope made of golden sand until you approach a single tree.

This tree is very important to remember as it’s your way out. The Big Drift is a small yet vast desert sprawled with bushes, mountain views and an emu or two if you’re lucky. Have fun rolling down hills and getting lost (but not too lost!). Make sure you pack a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water and a sense of direction! This is by far, in my opinion, the best thing to see in Wilsons Promontory!

2. Set Up Camp at Tidal River

If you’re camping, you want to get in early to find yourself a nice camping spot on flat ground, sheltered from the wind amongst the trees. There’s nothing like coming back after a long day to your bed already made. Grab yourself a bite to eat and pack some snacks for the next leg. If you’re staying in a cabin, check in is at 2pm. If you’ve brought a campervan there are two official designated campsites. You can find a little more information about the campsites here .

Tidal River has over 400 individual campsites both powered and unpowered so you can generally afford to be fussy with your exact location. Don’t be too picky though as you can easily waste a lot of time finding the perfect position! Tidal River also has great bathroom facilities including hot water, as well as laundry facilities, dishwashing areas and an outdoor cinema in the summer evenings.

3. Feel the Pristine White Sand Between Your Toes at Squeaky Beach

Winter or summer, you’ll have fun at Squeaky Beach. The round granite particles are so fine they squeak when you walk through the dry sand, hence the name! Embrace your inner child and have some fun! Fly a kite, go for a swim or explore the rocks. If you prefer a more peaceful time then bring a book and find a quiet space all to yourself to enjoy. At the north end of the beach, you’ll find giant orange granite boulders sitting steadily in the sand contrasting against the pure turquoise water of the ocean.

Squeaky Beach is accessible from Lilly Pilly Gully carpark, Picnic Bay and Tidal River via foot.

Squeaky Beach

4. See the best view of the sunset from Oberon Lookout

The walk to Oberon Lookout is a gradual incline on the gravel management vehicle track and will take about an hour. Make sure you find out what time sunset will be at www.timeanddate.com . The start of the track is at the Telegraph Saddle car park. Once you reach the top, find a comfortable spot on the rocks and soak up the view. There is a chance you’ll be inside the clouds so bring an extra layer. Bonus points if you pack a picnic to keep you going until dinner. From the top, you can find panoramic views of Tidal River, the various scattered islands just offshore, and the sun setting in the perfect spot over the horizon.

Even in Summer, this peak can get windy and cold, especially if the clouds are hanging low. The Prom it gets very dark very quickly, so take a torch with you.

On weekends from November to April during the day there is a free shuttle bus to the car park as the road is closed off.

Mount Oberon

5. Grab a Blanket and look for shooting stars at Norman Beach

After cooking a nice meal back at camp, grab a blanket and take the short walk from the campsite down to Norman Beach, find a spot on the sand and take in the sights. Keep an eye out for wombats along the way. Wilsons Prom is a dark sky area as artificial light is scarce. The stars here are some of the brightest you’ll see in Victoria. Download the SkyView app so you can locate the different constellations.

Normans Beach at night

6. Hike towards Growler Creek until you’re hungry

After a good night’s rest, pack up camp and leave the car in the Norman Beach car park. Walk from East to West down the whole stretch of Norman Beach. If the tide is out you may get to witness the thousands of tiny purple crabs scuttling along the sand trying to find something to eat. Walk towards them and they’ll quickly dig a hole to escape, then look behind you to see them all reappear again.

The walk to Grower Creek is around 6km and will take you approx. 1.5-2 hours one way. The creek is a picturesque lunch location but not so sheltered on a windy day. When walking keep an eye out for snakes as they like to warm up on the path and nearby rocks in the sun.

Growler's Creek

7. Sunset at Whisky Bay

On your way out of The Prom take a stop at Whisky Bay, just a 400m walk from the Whisky Bay car park (if your legs aren’t about to drop off). It’s a small, sheltered beach book-ended with oversized boulders. If you can manage to climb one they make for a great photo and place to enjoy a well earned refreshing beverage.

2 Day Wilsons Prom & Phillip Island Nature & Wildlife Tour Itinerary

Take a journey south-east of Melbourne to explore two of Victoria’s most beloved travel destinations, Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory. During this two-day tour, you will have a bounty of opportunities to observe and interact with Australian native wildlife and appreciate the spectacular coastal scenery of the Gippsland area.

Day One We kick off the tour from Melbourne and head straight to the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park. Seventy species of rare and adorable Australian native animals and birds call this award-winning wildlife park home, offering you a rare opportunity to observe koalas, Tasmanian devils, wombats and more. Take a stroll down Wallaby Walk for the chance to hand-feed and pat kangaroos and wallabies.

Next up is the Nobbies, a rocky viewpoint that overlooks the Bass Strait and Seal Rocks. Follow the boardwalk to admire the sweeping views and keep an eye out for the animals that call the area home, including seals, penguins and echidnas.

Before the sun sets, we make our way to Summerland Beach for the famous Penguin Parade and take a seat for a truly incredible wildlife experience. Once the sun has disappeared behind the horizon, the Little Penguins that inhabit the area emerge from the ocean after a day of fishing to waddle across the beach and into the sand dunes. Follow them along the boardwalks to watch as they make their way back to their burrows for the night. Once the penguins have headed off to bed, then it’s our turn to call it a night in our accommodation on Phillip Island.

Day Two (breakfast) After a light breakfast, we’ll meet again for day two, travelling to Wilsons Promontory. ‘The Prom’ as it’s known locally, is a 50 000-hectare reserve on the southernmost part of mainland Australia. The area is home to wombats, kangaroos, emus and more, so keep your eyes peeled throughout the day for native animals.

Here you will have the chance to explore the pristine wilderness via a hike along one of the several walking tracks that criss-cross the park including Mount Bishop and Lilly Pilly Gully. Feel the refreshing turquoise water and quartz sand of Squeaky Beach between your toes as you listen to proof of how the beach got its name. Surfers and beach tents at Squeaky Beach Wilsons Promontory.

Squeaky Beach

Considered by many to be the best beach in Wilsons Prom, the stunning Squeaky Beach Victoria is named for the unusual quartz sand that squeaks when you walk on it.

This iconic Wilson Promontory beach is pristine mind-blowing goodness with bright white sand. It’s a wonderful beach to walk along with huge boulders and rock pools at each end to explore.

The water was toe-numbingly cold (it is the Southern Ocean after all) on the day we visited, but a few hardy souls were frolicking amongst the waves undeterred.

Norman Beach

Just a short walk from Tidal River Campground, Norman Beach Wilsons Prom is a popular spot for families.

It’s a beautiful wide stretch of golden sand beach with views along the coast in both directions. The atmosphere is lovely at sunset and at low tide, it’s great for riding bikes.

The tidal river empties into the sea here and there’s a creek with calm water that’s good for swimming. Alternatively, you can try your hand at surfing in the ocean.

Whisky Bay is a smaller secluded beach that’s about a ten-minute drive from Tidal River Camp Grund. This makes it a good option if you want to get away from the crowds at Squeaky Beach Wilsons Prom.

Whisky Bay is a small but glorious beach with soft sand and picturesque boulders at either end. It’s considered to be a good place to watch the sunset because there are islands silhouetted out on the horizon.

If you are looking for a less crowded beach then put Whisky Bay beach on your best beach Wilsons Prom list.

2) Dive, Snorkel, And Cruise The Seas

View of the ocean and islands at Wilsons Prom Marine National Park in Victoria Australia.

The water and islands surrounding The Prom are protected by Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park, extending along 17 kilometres of coastline it’s Victoria’s largest marine protected area.

The strict fishing regulations guarantee some of the best diving and snorkeling in the state. Divers can explore sponge gardens, reefs, and small islands that are home to penguins, sea birds, seals, octopuses, sharks, and stingrays.

3) Go Whale Watching On A Wilsons Prom Cruise

Whale at Wilsons Prom Marine National Park

If you’re looking for things to do in Wilsons Prom in winter then a whale watching tour is a must.

Humpback and southern right whales migrate to the marine park at this time of year giving visitors the chance to spot them frolicking in the water or just passing by.

You’d be hard-pressed to find more memorable things to see in Wilsons Prom than these incredible whales.

This 6 hour whale spotting cruise not only takes you in search of humpback and southern right whales, but you’ll also see Australian fur seals, dolphins, and sea birds like the elusive albatross.

You’ll also see incredible rock formations and remote beaches such as Refuge Cove and Rabbit Island.

Even if it’s not whale season boat cruises are a great experience as you can still see dolphins and seals at play.

For more information about a Whale Spotting Cruise With Lunch click here.

4) Visit A Secluded Beach – Refuge Cove

Beach with trees at Refuge Cove Wilsons Prom Victoria.

As its name suggests the remote Refuge Cove has long provided seafarers with a sheltered haven from the treacherous waters of Bass Strait.

The secluded beach is only accessed via a 34.4 kilometre grade 4 hike that takes around 2-3 days or by boat.

If you’re a hiker this isolated beach is a great reward for all that spent energy, and you’ll most likely have it to yourself.

Although this is one of the best beaches Wilsons Prom has, not everyone can enjoy it.

However, wildlife and whale spotting cruises stop here for some water fun on their Wilsons Promontory tours.

Find more information about Wildlife and Whale Spotting Cruises by clicking here

5) Wilsons Prom Hikes

Visiting Wilsons Promontory is all about the outdoors, and the best way to explore it is one of the many Wilsons Promontory hikes.

There are heaps of different walking tracks and it would take you weeks to do them all.

Don’t worry if you don’t have that much time (or fitness), there are walks to suit everybody some are just 1 -2 kilometres long.

Enthusiastic hardcore trekker types can tackle a Wilsons Prom overnight hike or multi-day trek that takes you into the heart of the park.

The South-Eastern Circuit is the most popular overnight hike, with most walkers choosing to camp and taking one or two days to complete the loop.

Hiking Wilsons Promontory is a rewarding and unique way to see the park. So make time to explore the trails and enjoy magical lookouts, stunning landscapes, and a genuine return to nature.

Here are two of the most popular Wilsons Promontory walks.

Mount Oberon Summit Walk

One of the most popular things to do in Wilsons Prom is to climb Mount Oberon for this view of the ocean and coastline

Walking to the Mount Oberon summit is one of the top Wilsons Promontory things to do. However, it’s a 3.4 kilometre leg-burning, butt-busting, never-ending (or so it seems!) uphill trudge.

The uphill climb is relentless and just as you arrive red-faced and heart thumping at what you think is the summit, you discover a set of steps.

Scamper up these for another 10-minutes, and you’ll forget your pain when you set eyes on the magnificent views.

The pathway up is a gravel access road that’s surrounded by ferns and beautiful eucalyptus trees.

There are a couple of bench seats along the way ( but not many) where you can sit and take a break. It’s a good idea to bring plenty of water and some snacks to nibble on.

The Mt Oberon walk starts at Telegraph Saddle car park. The car park is closed during peak times and you have to take a shuttle from Tidal River Caravan Park.

Darby Saddle To Sparkes Lookout

The delightful walk to Sparkes Lookout is good for anyone looking for a shorter hike. It took us a couple of hours to walk including rest stops and it wasn’t difficult at all.

The Darby Saddle track offers coastal views and forest scenery, as it winds its way through giant trees and lush vegetation. Along the way, we caught glimpses of aquamarine water – a teaser of the views to come.

At the 2.1 kilometre mark, there’s a 300-metre side track that leads up to Sparkes Lookout.

This is a great option for those looking for Wilsons Prom activities that take don’t take all day.

If you’d like to go further the track continues past the turnoff up to Lookout Rocks and then on down to Tongue Point, and ends just before the semi-attached island.

6) Spot Australian Wildlife

Echidna sitting on the road at Wilsons Prom Victoria.

Spotting native animals out in the wild never gets tiring, and Wilsons Prom National Park is the perfect place to see Aussie wildlife.

The Wilsons Prom Wildlife Walk is great for seeing kangaroos, wallabies, and emus. It’s an easy short walk that’s close to the entrance of the park. I recommend making it your first stop on your way into the park.

Follow the Promontory Road towards Tidal River, about halfway along you’ll see a sign on the left that marks the start of the walk.

If you’d like to see wombats, then the Loo-Ern Track is one of the best places in Wilsons Prom for spotting one. Designed for people with limited mobility the track follows Tidal River.

Most of this lovely 1 kilometre walk is along a boardwalk that protects the fragile wetlands. You can choose to start your walk at either the picnic area in the car park opposite the Visitor Centre, or at First Ramp on the west end of 6th Avenue.

Note: Drive carefully keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife. Just look at this cute echidna we found by the side of the road, it could have easily been run over by a car.

7) See The World’s Southern Most Mangroves

Millers Landing is on the southern shore of Corner Inlet in the northern part of The Promontory. This section of the park doesn’t see nearly as many visitors and it’s one of the great places near Wilsons Prom to escape the crowds.

The area is home to the world’s southern-most mangroves. Weirdly they grow upside-down with their roots in the air, as the sticky mud they live in has little oxygen to offer.

From Five Mile car park, it’s a 40-minute walk that wanders downhill through banksia and stringybark woodland. This delightful walk offers the chance to see wildflowers, black swans, and yellow-tailed black cockatoos. People have come across emus along this track too.

8) Soak Up The Magic Of A Rainforest

Woman hiking along a Wilsons Prom Walk one of the many Wilsons Prom things to do.

When you get tired of the beaches and coastline, the Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk is a superb alternative.

Famous for its beautiful wildflowers Lilly Pilly Gully has a gorgeous rainforest with lush trees and plants. It’s perfect for a cloudy day when visibility is poor at Mount Oberon Wilsons Prom summit.

This is one of the easier walks in Wilsons Prom where you can really enjoy your natural surroundings. You’ll be taken through stringybark forest, dark ethereal woodland, and cool rainforest. It’s like another world.

There are several options to choose from for walking Lilly Pilly Gully. The 2.6 kilometre Lilly Pilly Gully Nature walk is an easy stroll that includes a 600 metre boardwalk.

Alternatively, the Lilly Pilly Gully Circuit takes you past the track up to Mount Bishop. At 5.8 kilometres it’s still a relatively easy walk. If you do the full circuit and Mount Bishop together it’s about 9.6 kilometres.

It’s possible to climb Mt Bishop directly from the car park (7.4 km) and avoid Lilly Pilly Gully altogether.

9) Sink Into The Sand Dunes At Big Drift

Stunning sand dunes and sky at the Big Drift in Wilsons Promontory national park, Victoria, Australia

Just a short walk from the Stockyard Campsite is an extensive series of inland sand dunes known as Big Drift.

This area is often overlooked by tourists who focus on other Wilsons Prom walking tracks, and you’ll most likely have the area to yourself. You’ll be blown away by the size of the massive sand dunes – if not by the wind!

Spend some time walking around the dunes and exploring the desert-like landscape. Adrenaline junkies will enjoy dune surfing, boogie boarding, and sledding down the steep sandhills.

To avoid getting lost it’s a good idea to mark the way back to the car park as your tracks may be wiped out by the wind.

10) Stay At A Wilsons Prom Lighthouse

Have you ever dreamt of staying in a lighthouse? Then this is your chance to walk in the footsteps of previous lighthouse keepers and experience this remote way of life.

Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse was built by convict labourers in 1859 on a rocky slither of land, and with its southerly position, it can be cold and blustery adding to its sense of isolation.

The Lightstation’s remoteness is part of its appeal, that, and waking up to incredible ocean views. You’ll have to work for it though as the lighthouse can only be reached on foot.

Visitors need to have a decent level of fitness to attempt the Wilsons Prom Lighthouse Walk. There are two routes to choose from; the inland route via Telegraph Saddle Car Park (19 km one way), or the coastal route from Tidal River via Oberon Bay (23.8 km one way).

There are 3 cottages, each has a bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen. All food and bed linen must be brought in and rubbish must be taken out.

11) Stop By A Victorian Town

The small towns of Victoria are characterful and unique and are well worth stopping by during your Wilsons Prom visit.

Gippsland has major dairy and farming industries and visitors can expect to enjoy farms, vineyards, dairies, local produce, and small goods.

Wilsons Promontory street sign giving directions to Yanakie a small town in Gippsland Victoria.

Surrounded by rolling hills, Foster Victoria was once the site of an early gold rush. The town’s old Post Office is now a museum that features displays of the region’s gold, timber, and dairying history.

There’s a Visitor Information Centre, a craft shop, a gallery with exhibits by local artists, and a good range of shops and cafes.

Known as the “Art Capital of South Gippsland” Fish Creek has seriously cool art galleries, including the gallery/bookshop of famous children’s author Alison Lester.

The area also boasts fantastic wineries that are well worth a visit, but the town is best known for its pub and the giant fish that sits on its roof!

Set in an imposing art deco building it’s the closest hotel to Wilsons Promontory. We had dinner at the Fish Creek Pub during our stay at The Prom and we were blown away by the quality of our meal.

Yanakie sits on a narrow strip of land that connects Wilsons Prom with the rest of victoria. It’s the last town before the entrance gates, and it’s where you’ll find the best accommodation near Wilsons Prom.

This town is tiny consisting of a general store, petrol station, and a public hall. Most of the residents are involved in either tourism or dairy farming.

Yanakie beach is popular with boating enthusiasts as it has calm waters, a waterfront caravan park, and a boat ramp.

Duck Point on the eastern side has spectacular views of the waters surrounding Yanakie and the mountain peaks of the Prom Victoria.

Where Is Wilsons Promontory National Park?

Wilsons Promontory is located around 240 kilometres southeast of Melbourne in the Victorian region of Gippsland.

Along with many other things Wilson Prom Victoria is famous for being the southernmost point of mainland Australia.

It sits on a tiny peninsula that juts out into Bass Strait and is one of the most stunning National Parks in Victoria.

How To Get To Get to Wilsons Prom

Dirt road and farmlands at Wilsons Prom Victoria.

At a little more than a 3 hour drive from Melbourne Wilsons Prom Australia is a popular weekend getaway for Melbournians. Even so, the area is pretty remote and a car is essential for getting around.

We travelled from our home town Geelong and found it fairly easy to get to, with a number of country towns where you can stop and rest along the way.

From Melbourne take the South Gippsland Highway and turn off at either Meeniyan or Foster to get to the National Park entrance. From there it’s another 30 kilometres to Tidal River Campground or 33 kilometres to Telegraph Saddle Carpark.

If you don’t have any transport but still want to experience all the Wilson Promontory things to do, a day tour from Melbourne is a great option.

This 12 hour small group hiking tour includes many of the things to do around Wilsons Prom that we’ve mentioned here.

Aimed toward those who want to enjoy the mountains and best beaches Wilsons Prom has, you’ll get to hear the sand squeak beneath your feet and gaze upon the Southern Ocean from the summit of Mt Oberon.

Best Wilsons Prom Accommodation

Tidal River Camping

The Wilsons Prom caravan park at Tidal River is the only place to stay within the National Park. There are other caravan parks near Wilsons Prom – Stockyard Camp and Yanakie Caravan Park – but the Tidal River accommodation is the only Wilsons Promontory caravan park.

Tidal River Wilsons Prom can be a madhouse and it’s not somewhere we would choose to stay. The Prom is a favourite destination for Victorians and during the holiday periods, it’s so popular you have to apply for a campsite using a ballot system.

Wilsons Prom camping ground has 484 sites but only 20 sites are powered. It also has a Visitor Centre, general store, and a cafe.

Best Wilsons Promontory Accommodation

Our best advice on where to stay in Wilsons Prom is to stay just outside the park in Yanakie. It’s only a few minutes from the Park’s entrance with views of the Wilsons Promontory mountains and scenery, and the accommodation is far more comfortable.

Black Cockatoo Cottages

View from Black Cockatoo Cottages in Wilsons Prom

Set on 5 acres Black Cockatoo Cottages is just 3 kilometres from The Prom entrance.

This warm and comfortable self-contained accommodation offers panoramic views of Corner Inlet and the mountains of Wilson’s Prom.

You can choose from 3 one-bedroom cottages or, if you’re travelling with a group, a three-bedroom house that accommodates up to 6 people.

How To Get To  Wilsons Promontory 📍

Getting to Wilson’s Promontory can be a little bit tricky if you do not have a vehicle. Whilst some buses leave from Melbourne and after a 4-hour journey and one change over, you will eventually arrive.

That being said The Prom is huge and the bus does not take you to the campsite, which is still another 20-minute drive through the park. If you did want to check the bus schedules you can use 📲 Rome 2 Rio to find all the up-to-date timetables.

wilsons prom 2 day tour

Best Time To Visit Wilsons Promontory 📅

There is never a bad time to visit The Prom. But if you are looking for dry hot weather and warmer waters then you want to plan your trip for December or January. The prices of camping spots change as the season turns. Therefore you will be paying a premium in the peak months.

Be aware these are the most popular months which include school holidays. If you are planning your visit within the school holidays you will need to book well in advance. In some cases, the park creates a ballot process to book camping spots due to this such high demand.

Wilsons Promontory Guide, Tidal River Campsite

Wilsons Promontory Campsite ⛺

Within Wilsons Promontory there are two campsites. The first is The stockyard which is located at the main entrance gates to The Prom. Here there are a set of toilets, free BBQs but not much else. The Stockyard is a very small site and only a few walks from the location. Therefore you will want to stay at the main campsite which is called Tidal River.

Wombat at Wilsons Prom

Tidal River is a large beautiful campsite with all the amenities you could need. It is located approximately 20 minutes from the main National Park gates along the west side of the peninsula. Here the site offers hundreds of unpowered spots which are not allocated. This means once you have your park permit you can choose from any of the unpowered free spots on the campsite. There is also a very limited amount of powers site which are allocated on the purchase of a camping permit.

There is a visitor’s centre that is open 8:30 am – 4:00 pm which you must register your vehicle details with to receive your park permit. If you arrive out of office hours set up camp and visit the centre first thing in the morning.

Also on the campsite is a small general store which provides all the basics from food and camping equipment and a small café which offers food throughout the day. The opening time for both of these stores varies so check the Tidal river website for the up-to-date times.

Wilsons Promontory Campsite Cost  🤑

There are several options when it comes to camping at Wilsons Promontory. Each type of accommodation varies in price starting with the cheapest which is unpowered camping. Or you can choose to stay in one of the luxury cabins dotted around the site.

As far as camping goes the prices for an unpowered site are slightly more expensive than you would expect. But bear in mind that you are allowed up to 8 people per site. This means if you are camping with friends or family you can divide the cost quite easily.

We camped in an unpowered spot in October 2018 which cost us $58 per night. The prices do change so we would suggest checking out the Tidal River website to check the price for your visit.

Things to do in Wilsons Prom

Normans beach wilsons promontory.

At the south end of the Tidal River campsite sits Normans Beach. This stunning stretch of sand has several entry points from the campsite including a boat ramp closer to the mouth of the Tidal River. The beach is perfect for families to enjoy the soft sand and the long gentle waves blowing in through the bay. This also makes it an ideal place for beginner surfers. The beginners can surf through the white water into shore. Whilst the more advanced surfers can head out the back to the bigger wave. All of this is a few minutes’ walk from your camp and all the campsite amenities.

Top 3 Wilson Promontory Short Walks 🚶🏻‍♀️

Squeaky beach.

  4.2 km |  1.5 hours return | Easy

This walk starts at the Tidal River footbridge and follows the cliff edge around to the next bay which is Squeaky Beach. There are plenty of places to stop and admire the view over Tidal River and Normans beach before you cross over into the next bay. Squeaky Beach was given its name due to the white quartz sand that squeaks under your feet.

You can also stop off at Pillar Point along this walk but it will add another 700m to the distance. You will return to walk is via the same track. Please be aware that the rocks along the coastline can become very slippery when wet.

wilsons prom 2 day tour

Mt Oberon Wilson Prom Summit Walk

6.8km | 2-hour return | Moderate

The Mount Oberon walk is a must for sunrise or sunset. The track which consists of a gradual gradient slowly winds around the mountain until you almost reach the summit. Just before you reach the top you will have to climb a few sets of stairs carved into the rock. The view is breathe taking. You can look down across the whole of Tidal River and see the surrounding coastlines of the other bays surrounding it.

Be aware that the car park for the Mount Oberon track is based on Telegraph Saddle and is only small. Therefore at peak times, the park runs a free shuttle bus from Tidal River Campsite to the Telegraph Saddle. Please check the bus timetables before you leave so you don’t miss the last bus back to the campsite.

Mount Oberon, Wilsons Promontory Guide

  4 km|  1.5 hours return |  Easy

Big Drift is something you do not expect to see on the visit to Wilsons Promontory. These huge sand dunes run for kilometres inland and almost feel like you’re in a total desert environment. To access Big Drift you will need to park at the Stockyard campsite and follow the track across lush green fields before climbing the dune. There is no beach access from Big Drift and it is very easy to get lost. Therefore we advise you to mark where you entered the dun on a map or your phone.

Big Drift, Wilsons Promontory Guide

Wilson Promontory Overnight Walks 🔦

There are several overnights walks with a large selection of distances Wilsons Prom offers. Before going on an overnight hike you will need to attend the visitors centre to register your hike and purchase a permit. There are again several accommodations on offer. You can opt to sleep in a tent that you will have to carry for the day, this is the cheapest option. Or you can book into the lighthouse and stay the night which is located on the southeast side of the park. Please check with the visitor centre for more details on what you will need to bring on this adventure.

wilsons prom 2 day tour

Hi guys great blog post!! I live at Wilsons Prom and love reading other people’s posts about the area. However, re getting the bus here. The closest that the bus comes is Fish Creek (or the next stop is Foster) which are both +50km from Tidal River. The website you linked in your post suggests getting a taxi from the bus into Tidal River, however, this is impossible as there are no taxis or Uber in this area. There is no public transport at all from Fish Creek or Foster into Wilsons Promontory, hitch hiking (not recommended) is the only option if you don’t have a car. An alternative is to book a day tour from Melbourne with a company such as Bunyip Tours or ExperienceOz or Great Southern Escapes.

Hi Angela, thankyou so much for taking the time to read through out blog post and leave a comment. We will make sure we edit the blog post to reflect the avaliablity of the public transport in the area. You are very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of Australia. Thanks again Olly + Milly
