การแข่งขันจักรยานทางไกลนานาชาติ ทัวร์ ออฟ ไทยแลนด์

The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup Tour of Thailand

ประเทศไทย โดยสมาคมกีฬาจักรยานแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัด การแข่งขันจักรยานทางไกลนานาชาติ ทัวร์ ออฟ ไทยแลนด์ ชิงถ้วยพระราชทานสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เพื่อเทิดพระเกียรติ เนื่องในวันคล้ายวันพระราชสมภพสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี วันที่ 2 เมษายน โดยจัดประจำทุกปี ตั้งแต่ ปี พ.ศ. 2542 เป็นต้นมา โดยใช้ชื่อการแข่งขันว่า “The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup Tour of Thailand”

การจัดแข่งขันจักรยานทางไกล “The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup Tour of Thailand” เป็นการจัดแข่งขันจักรยานทางไกล ที่บรรจุอยู่ในปฏิทินการแข่งขันของสหพันธ์จักรยานนานาชาติ (Union Cycling International) หรือ UCI ในระดับ 2.2 ของเอเชียทัวร์ในประเภทชายและวีเมนส์ทัวร์ในประเภทหญิงมานับตั้งแต่เริ่มขึ้นทะเบียนกับ UCI เมื่อปี 2543 ต่อองค์กรที่รับผิดชอบกีฬาจักรยานระดับโลก คือ UCI และระดับภูมิภาคของเอเชียคือสมาพันธ์จักรยานแห่งเอเชีย (Asian Cycling Confederation - ACC) มีความเห็นว่า การจัดแข่งขันจักรยานทางไกล“The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup Tour of Thailand” ควรที่จะยกระดับให้สูงขึ้นเพื่อรองรับการเติบโตและการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน

ดังนั้นในปี 2560 สมาคมกีฬาจักรยานฯ จึงได้ยื่นเรื่องขอยกระดับการแข่งขันจากเดิม ระดับ 2.2 ขึ้นไปเป็นระดับ 2.1 ต่อมาทางยูซีไอได้จัดส่งผู้แทนด้านเทคนิค (Technical Delegate) เข้ามาสังเกตการณ์และประเมินมาตรฐาน การจัดการแข่งขันให้เป็นไปตามข้อกำหนด คือต้องมีทีมอาชีพที่จดทะเบียนกับ UCI ทั้งในระดับเวิลด์ทีม / โปรเฟสชั่นแนล คอนติเนนตัลทีม และคอนติเนนตัลทีม รวมถึงระดับทีมชาติเท่านั้นที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันได้ขณะที่มาตรฐานความปลอดภัยการจัดหาโรงแรมที่พัก และเงินรางวัลจะต้องเพิ่มขึ้นและในที่สุดสมาคมกีฬาจักรยานฯ ก็ได้รับการอนุมัติจาก UCI ให้จัดการแข่งขัน “The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup Tour of Thailand 2017” ในระดับ 2.1 ทั้งประเภทชายและหญิงในปี 2560
