Welcome to SDSU

San Diego State University (SDSU) Transfers: 2024 Requirements, Dates, GPAs & More

How effective are san diego state university (sdsu) virtual tours.

It depends how you use them. San Diego State University (SDSU) is a hustling, bustling campus and community. The beauty of San Diego State University (SDSU) virtual tours on CampusReel is that authentic video tours, made by real students, can be spectacular at capturing the San Diego State University (SDSU) vibe. We also go well beyond the confines of the San Diego State University (SDSU) campus by taking you around San Diego. In traditional virtual tours, you will mostly see still, unengaging images and will not see the surrounding area at all – which is why CampusReel virtual tours are so important.

Can a San Diego State University (SDSU) virtual tour replace a traditional in-person visit?

If you cannot visit San Diego State University (SDSU) in person, then we can honestly say that we believe a CampusReel virtual tour of San Diego State University (SDSU) is absolutely the most effective and holistic way to understand the San Diego State University (SDSU) people, campus and community. However, if you do plan on visiting San Diego State University (SDSU) and other colleges in person, we strongly recommend that you at least prescreen your college options on CampusReel before spending the time and money to visit. Most prospective families find that as soon as the step on campus, they instantly know whether or not they like the school – but they’ve already spent all that time and money getting there! Our goal is to eliminate all the time and money visiting San Diego State University (SDSU) in person until you can make a strong educated guess that it’s worth the investment.

What places can I virtually tour at San Diego State University (SDSU)?

For your convenience, below is a list of San Diego State University (SDSU) places you can virtually tour on CampusReel.

  • Storm Hall at San Diego State University (SDSU)
  • SDSU Turtle Pond at San Diego State University (SDSU)
  • San Diego State University- College of Arts & Letters at San Diego State University (SDSU)

What are the downsides of a San Diego State University (SDSU) virtual tour?

The downside of virtually touring San Diego State University (SDSU) on CampusReel is that, admittedly, our technology does not yet mimic the exact feeling and experience of visiting San Diego State University (SDSU) in person. We are working on this though! A common request we also receive from users is to add more perspectives (e.g. student guides) to the platform. Rest assured we are working on adding more CampusReel guides to the San Diego State University (SDSU) virtual tour. However, our selection of guides still far outweighs the available perspectives of traditional virtual tour platforms.

What are the benefits of a San Diego State University (SDSU) virtual tour?

The most obvious benefit of a San Diego State University (SDSU) virtual tour on CampusReel is that is can be accessed from anywhere. This can save families a lot of time and money compared to visiting San Diego State University (SDSU) in person . Another often overlooked benefit of a CampusReel virtual tour is that it goes far beyond a traditional in person tour San Diego State University (SDSU) . Campus visits are limited both in time and scope – how are you expected to truly understand a college in a 1 hour tour? That’s why we stress the added benefit of CampusReel virtual tours – experience San Diego State University (SDSU) and San Diego during different seasons, days of the week, and even hours of the day. What’s game day like? What is finals week life? Again, traditional virtual touring platforms don’t include this benefit.

NDSU research expertise featured at prominent hearing

Greg Lardy, the Joe and Norma Peltier Endowed Vice President for North Dakota State University Agriculture

Greg Lardy, the Joe and Norma Peltier Endowed Vice President for North Dakota State University Agriculture, testified at the field hearing on behalf of NDSU.

NDSU’s expanding role in advanced agricultural technology and research was featured Thursday at the United States Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee Field Hearing hosted by Sen. John Hoeven at the Grand Farm Innovation Campus in Wheatland, North Dakota.

Greg Lardy, the Joe and Norma Peltier Endowed Vice President for North Dakota State University Agriculture, testified at the field hearing on behalf of NDSU. U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith from Minnesota and John Boozman of Arkansas joined Hoeven at the hearing.

Hoeven announced in June that the committee hearing would be held locally and would emphasize the agriculture partnerships between research institutions such as NDSU, private businesses, federal agencies and other local organizations.

Lardy’s testimony focused on NDSU’s expanding role in those areas.

“It should be no surprise that agriculture and food production are changing rapidly. A growing global population, much of which is emerging from poverty, is demanding additional and higher quality foods,” Lardy said. “North Dakota is uniquely positioned to play a vital role in providing those foods. As a state that produces over 40 different agricultural commodities and leads the nation in a dozen of those, our producers feed the world. NDSU plays a key role in this effort through education, research and extension programming.”

As a land-grant research institution, NDSU’s influence on agriculture continues to grow across the state, evidenced by the research and work conducted at seven research extension centers across North Dakota.

“The $2 million we secured for a new ag research policy center at NDSU will help ensure that local, Midwestern expertise is guiding policymakers in Washington,” said Hoeven in a press release in April. “In addition, we’ve provided more than $50 million for high-priority research initiatives across North Dakota, helping to strengthen crop genetics, prevent disease, improve yields and reduce costs for our producers.”

“NDSU is also a leader in precision agriculture,” Lardy said. “We collaborate with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service, private industry and other organizations to accelerate the development of advanced agricultural technologies. This relationship is enhanced with the test bed provided by Grand Farm. Thanks to Senator Hoeven for his efforts to strengthen this relationship even more. By investing in technology that allows more rapid data transfer and utilization of data collection across broad geographic areas, our scientists can rapidly solve various vexing problems for farmers and ranchers.”

A significant partnership between NDSU and FARMS (Food systems Adapted for Resiliency and Maximized Security) seeks to enhance North Dakota’s reputation as a national leader in AgTech research.

“Greg Lardy and Greg Tehven, chief executive officer of Emerging Prairie, shared how public-private partnerships such as ours drive agricultural innovation and bring together actionable research by integrating Tribal agricultural knowledge and the latest technologies to create sustainable solutions that equitably strengthen rural economies and drive generational change," said Hollie Mackey, FARMS chief executive officer. "I was proud to see this impactful work highlighted today."

In addition to FARMS, another partnership led by NDSU with great potential to deliver research-driven discoveries to the nation is NDSU’s new Food, Energy and Water Security (FEWS) initiative. With a goal of improving sustainability and resiliency in those areas, FEWS will promote energy sustainability, studying humans’ impact on water systems, supporting Tribal food sovereignty, and improving health and nutrition.

Lardy and Colleen Fitzgerald, vice president for research and creative activity at NDSU, were the driving forces behind the initiative. FEWS issues are some of the primary focuses that NDSU researchers are working to resolve by advancing innovative solutions in those areas.

According to Fitzgerald, the partnership NDSU has with USDA continues to grow, seeing an increase in funding of 57 percent year over year to $32.2M in the most recent fiscal year (2024).

Protecting homeless populations through engineering, AI and community outreach

A tent floats in the San Diego River after heavy rains caused flooding.

Pictured above: Previously someone's home, a tent floats in the San Diego River after heavy rains caused flooding.

The homelessness rate in the U.S. has risen steadily since 2017. With over 171,000 people lacking consistent housing, California has by far the highest number of homeless people. Since the state is also prone to natural disasters , homeless people in California are particularly at risk.

To help alleviate this issue, Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Erfan Goharian is developing a system to protect this displaced population safe from flooding.

“Homeless communities are already vulnerable, and they are more exposed to natural disasters,” Goharian says. “We wanted to combine our technology and research to help with a social problem.”

Funded by the National Science Foundation’s Smart and Connected Community grant , the project aims to create a system of cameras that will be constantly monitored by artificial intelligence to immediately warn homeless communities of flooding. Goharian has collaborated with researchers from San Diego State University to deploy a pilot program along the San Diego River. The team plans to conserve valuable resources by automating a process that currently uses a significant amount of manpower.

“Artificial intelligence means that whatever we can do, computers and machines should be able to do it if they are trained well,” Goharian says. “We don’t want a person to sit and look at cameras 24/7 because the machine can do that.”

Along with Goharian, Computer Science and Engineering Professor Yan Tong is developing a deep learning model that can analyze images of water to forecast flooding. Tong’s model will collect data, such as water depth from the camera system. In addition, San Diego State Associate Professor Hassan Davani is using computer modeling to identify flood-prone areas.

The data will be used to create a network of cameras that will monitor the most vulnerable places. The final product will not only be able to predict flooding but also estimate evacuation time to help outreach programs allocate their resources more effectively.

“We want to know what the actual needs are rather than guess,” Tong says. “We are not the people affected the most, but we can help the people working with the [homeless] community.”

The project will enter its second year of development this fall. Goharian’s team have spent the first year determining the needs of the community and building a deep learning model. The group aims to optimize materials by taking advantage of existing resources like the area’s traffic camera system.

“We want to place the cameras very strategically. Having more cameras doesn’t necessarily mean getting more or better information,” Goharian says.

Goharian and Tong have created an in-house camera system that can analyze images onsite, making operations quicker and cheaper. Meanwhile, Professor Megan Welsh Carroll from the San Diego State University School of Public Affairs focuses on community outreach by helping develop a framework to distribute weather warnings among homeless populations. The team is also collaborating with local outreach organizations, People Assisting the Homeless , and the San Diego River Foundation . The research team wants to spend as much time engaging with the community as possible.

“We want to make sure that any action we take is informed by scientists and engineers, but ultimately community-driven,” Goharian says. “Instead of sitting in our offices and thinking about solving hypothetical problems, we want to make sure that the problems we are solving are real.”

While the research has been promising so far, Goharian expects the project to last four-to-six years. The next step is to work towards an extension of the grant funding for the second phase of the project.

The researchers are hopeful about the implications of the system they are creating. Goharian plans to bring his work back to South Carolina and develop a similar infrastructure to help the local homeless population. According to Tong, their deep learning model may also be used with drones to predict the spread of wildfires or crop diseases.

“It’s a different process, but it involves similar technology. This is wild thinking, but the techniques may be applicable,” she says.

While homelessness remains a pressing issue in the U.S., the research team is committed to doing their part.

“The health of the most vulnerable individuals matters. If the poorest and most marginalized folks can be kept safe, that says a lot about the good things in our society,” Carroll says.

Goharian emphasizes that engaging with the community is essential for conducting research that truly makes a difference.

“We read the news and identify problems scientifically, but going out and talking to people, that’s when you realize the extent of the problem,” Goharian says. “Feeling, experiencing and seeing the problem is something that all academic people should do.”

Move-in weekend approaches at SDSU

Meet State

South Dakota State University is anticipating a large incoming class of first-year students and strong retention as it readies for move-in weekend starting Friday, Aug. 23.

New student move-in is set for 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 23, and returning student move-in is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 24. Hundreds of Meet State volunteers from across campus are ready to direct traffic, welcome new arrivals, unload vehicles, haul student belongings from vehicles to halls, coordinate building and loading zones, and much more.

“We’re excited to see students returning to the South Dakota State University campus and the larger Brookings community ahead of the new academic year and their first day of classes Aug. 26,” said Michaela Willis, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. “A lot of great opportunities are ahead for our students, and we’re ready to help them get off to a strong start as they settle into their new home.”

A variety of events are planned throughout the weekend to welcome students back to campus. University convocation, with SDSU alum and featured speaker Kim Tyler and university leadership ringing in the new academic year, is set for 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 on the Sylvan Green.

Tyler, a 1982 commercial economics graduate who lives in Sioux Falls, had a 31-year career with the Kellogg Company, retiring as vice president of Alternative Channel Sales. For the past seven years, she served as co-chair of the SDSU Foundation’s Bold & Blue Campaign, which raised more than $604 million in private funds for the university.

Convocation is followed by the new student and family welcome picnic at 5:15 p.m., also on the Sylvan Green, and the Welcome Back Bash at 7 p.m. in the University Student Union.

Students on Aug. 24 will also enjoy activities such as Yellow, Blue and You at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, food trucks in the University Student Union parking lot, the Miller Wellness Center Extravaganza, a dance and more.

While the Meet State team is preparing on campus, businesses around Brookings are also getting ready to host thousands of visitors.

“There’s a strong relationship between the campus and community. Every fall, you can feel the excitement building around Brookings when the students return. Our hotels, restaurants and local retailers definitely see a boost as students and their families arrive for move-in weekend, and that excitement extends through the community as students settle in for the school year,” said Laura Schoen Carbonneau, executive director of Visit Brookings.
