What are TRIP drinks?

TRIP is a brand of drinks that provide a source of CBD. This is the non-psychoactive compound found in hemp plants, and unlike the active compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it doesn’t get you high. The TRIP drinks are produced in the UK, and the CBD is derived from hemp. According to the TRIP website, all products are third party tested to ensure they are THC free and of high quality and purity. The drinks come in a range of flavours, including elderflower & mint, peach & ginger and lemon basil, as well as a cold brew coffee drink, and a ‘Calm Down’ CBD drink, which is a raspberry and orange blossom flavour. All of the TRIP CBD is vegan, gluten free and palm oil free.

TRIP drink can

Do CBD TRIP drinks do anything?

TRIP drinks are infused with CBD , which is the non-psychoactive part of the hemp plant. They will not make the drinker ‘high’ but it can make the drinker feel more balanced and calm. This can typically take around 20 minutes to feel after the drink has been consumed, though the effects can differ from person to person. CBD itself can promote a sense of calmness and relaxation, which may help to better manage stress and anxiety. CBD-infused drinks may also improve sleep quality, due to the relaxation properties of the drinks. One study from 2019 showed that CBD improved sleep and anxiety in those who consumed CBD for a month.

How does TRIP drink make you feel?

The properties of TRIP largely come from the CBD it contains. Although CBD is part of the cannabis plant, it does not contain any psychoactive properties, such of that of THC, which is a different compound. Instead, CBD is meant to help the drinker to unwind and relax, without the feeling of getting ‘high’.

CBD can help you to relax and unwind, allowing your body to find balance. Unlike with THC, you won’t experience physical or mental impairment and it won’t get you high. The length of time it takes for CBD to take effect is likely to be different from person to person and varies based on the individual. For instance, an individual’s metabolism, diet, weight and genetics could play a role in the period of time it takes for CBD to come into effect. However, CBD generally gets to work quite quickly, and it can take as little as 15 minutes for you to feel more like yourself.

How long do TRIP drinks take to work?

The length of time it takes for the TRIP drinks to work can vary from person to person for a number of factors. This includes the persons age, weight, metabolism and diet, as well as genetics. On average, the effect from CBD drinks can be felt within 15-20 minutes, and can last for up to 4 hours. Compared to consuming foods with CBD, which can take up to an hour for any effects to be felt, and can last for up to 6 hours after ingestion.

  • Very low calorie drink, with under 21 calories per can and 0g sugar
  • There are a range of flavours, including a combined CBD and caffeine drink to avoid the unpleasant side effects that some people can suffer with when drinking coffee

Disadvantages of TRIP drinks

  • May not provide the sought after effect. For some, the drinks do not provide a sense of relaxation or calmness.
  • Effects may be from a placebo effect, and can be short lasting
  • Taste may not be to everyone’s preference
  • Sweeteners are used, which for some can irritate the gut

Possible TRIP drink side effects

Although CBD is generally well tolerated, it can be a case of trial and error to find out what dose suits you as an individual the best. Side effects often come from too high of a dose for your body. Some of the common side effects can include:

  • Mood changes
  • Changes in appetite
  • Dizziness and drowsiness
  • Gastrointestinal issues

If you believe you are experiencing any of these side effects, we recommend stopping consuming of TRIP and any other CBD containing products. The FDA recommends not exceeding a dose of more than 70mg CBD per day.

TRIP drink price

The price of TRIP drinks can vary, depending on where they are purchased, and if you are buying a bundle of drinks at once.

For example, an individual can is priced around £2.10 each, or a bundle of 4 for £6.50. If you buy a bundle of 12 from the TRIP website, this would be £24. However, if you want to buy a 24 or 48 pack, they offer a subscribe and save offer, where you can choose a regular delivery of TRIP drinks, giving you a 42% discount. For example, a regular 24 pack case is £48, but if you subscribe and save, this will cost just £31.

When is it best time to consume a TRIP drink?

According to the website, TRIP can be consumed at any time of the day. Ideally when you want to feel calm, so this can be first thing in the morning to start the day, or could be to unwind in the evening after a stressful day. You can even enjoy a TRIP drink during the afternoon, to possibly help with better mood and overall productivity.

Are TRIP drinks safe?

Yes, according to the World Health Organisation, there is no evidence that pure CBD intake leads to public health related problems. CBD itself is unlikely to impair daily functioning, and is safe. However, higher than tolerated quantities can lead to unpleasant side effects for some, as described above.

CBD itself can effectively treat certain types of childhood epilepsy syndromes, especially when not responding to traditional antiseizure medications. In some studies, CBD was able to reduce and even stop seizures altogether. Consumption of high levels of CBD can increase blood thinning, so it is important to be aware of consuming CBD if you are taking any blood thinner medication, as well as an anti-epileptic or immunosuppressant medication. Because CBD products are sold as supplements and not medications, it is not regulated under the FDA, as medications are.

Precautions of drinking TRIP beverages

There are some cases where it would not be advisable to consume CBD products such as TRIP drinks. For example:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Although CBD has not been fully researched in pregnant women, it is known that CBD does pass through the placenta, and this may have unknown risks to the developing foetus.
  • If you have liver disease. As CBD can increase certain liver enzymes, which can lead to liver inflammation.
  • Do not take with alcohol. Consuming CBD products alongside alcohol can cause excessive drowsiness.

Is TRIP drink safe for children?

No, TRIP is not safe for children, as the effect of TRIP have not been extensively researched with children, and therefore it is not advised as a drink to give to children. CBD itself has not been tested extensively for it’s safety and effectiveness, especially in children, so there is no definitive answer if CBD is safe for children.

Although there is some research around how CBD may help with seizure control, which may be then applied to children with seizures, it is not something we would recommend, unless closely monitored by a registered health professional.

Is TRIP drink legal in the UK?

CBD is a legal substance in the UK, as long as the THC concentration does not exceed 0.2%. TRIP does not contain this level of THC, and is therefore safe and legal. It is sold in many supermarkets and retailers across the UK!

Can you drive after a TRIP drink?

Yes – CBD is not a controlled substance and therefore drinking TRIP and then driving is legal. CBD is a non-psychotropic compound, meaning it does not get the user high, and is therefore not illegal. It is important that you use a trusted source of CBD, as some products may contain THC.

Online TRIP drink reviews

Some reviews have commented how the TRIP drinks are great alternatives to alcohol to help them relax and unwind, especially after a long day.

TRIP Positive Review

The subscription service seems to be popular as a better value for money offering for those who frequently buy direct from the TRIP website.

Positive TRIP Review

However, several reviews mention they felt no difference when consuming the TRIP drinks, even after several tries. Some have doubted that the amount and quality of CBD in one drink is not enough, and there is no evidence on the website on how the CBD content is verified through third party testing. Many reviews comment that the cost cannot justify the product, especially if nothing was felt for them after consuming the drinks.

Negative TRIP review

Are TRIP drinks worth it?

The TRIP drinks can be a great way to help reduce alcohol intake, or have another alterative soft drink, which is low in sugar and easily found in most supermarkets. It can be a refreshing change to just plain water, and for some, it may provide a sense of calmness, and help to improve levels of anxiety. However, for many, the desired outcomes may not be felt, and this may be due to the small doses of CBD found in the TRIP drinks.

Therefore, it is something you can give a try if you would like support with any anxiety or stress management, though we would instead recommend regular support from a private dietitian  to ensure you are seeing positive outcomes with better managing any health concerns, in relation to stress and anxiety. This way, we can ensure you are changing your lifestyle for the better, without the risk of developing any side effects of consuming higher levels of CBD overall.

CBD Travel Guide: The Only Guide to Traveling with CBD Oil You’ll Ever Need

CBD and CBD Travel Guide: The Only Guide to Traveling with CBD Oil You’ll Ever Need

Travelling with CBD Oil in 2022

CBD is a natural and safe compound with many well-documented health benefits. According to a 2017 WHO’s report on cannabidiol, even doses as high as 1,500 mg CBD daily are well tolerated in humans.

While many places around the world consider cannabis an illicit substance, CBD is legal in most countries. However, because CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant — and there are more than one species in this family — its legality isn’t unconditional everywhere.

The above situation complicates many areas of using CBD, from possession to buying to travelling with your CBD products around the world.

If you have an adventurer’s soul but don’t want to mess with the local law, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide on traveling with CBD in virtually every corner of the globe.

Let’s start with the basics.

Millions of people take the highways and skyways for holiday travel. CBD is all the rage right now, so it’s safe to assume that many of them will consider traveling with their CBD oil, capsules, or whatever form of cannabidiol they use.

The biggest misconception when it comes to taking CBD on the road? “Since CBD is legal in my country, it doesn’t matter whether I’m traveling with it in a car, on a train, or on a plane.” Another one? “CBD is CBD, so why bother?” In order to understand why there’s so much confusion around the legal status of CBD around the world, it’s important to know the difference between its two sources — hemp and marijuana.

Differentiating Hemp and Marijuana

On a molecular level, CBD is CBD no matter the source. It’s the same compound with the same chemical structure and effects.

But when it comes to the effects and legality of different CBD products, the source becomes paramount.

Despite coming from the same plant family — Cannabis sativa L. — hemp and marijuana are two different plants.

For one, they have different cannabinoid profiles.

While marijuana boasts high concentrations of THC and usually low-to-high levels of CBD (depending on its genetics), hemp plants are rich in CBD and contain only trace amounts of THC (usually less than 0.3% per dry mass).

This means that while consuming marijuana and marijuana-infused products can give you psychoactive effects referred to as the “cannabis high,” hemp isn’t capable of such things due to its low THC content.

Because of that, governments around the world have different regulations for both plants.

Marijuana is legal only in Canada, Uruguay, and 11 US states as of this writing. Some countries have already decriminalized its possession and are striving for legalization.

Hemp, on the other hand, is legal in most places.

CBD products from hemp are usually labeled as “health supplements,” meaning that you can buy them over the counter. On top of that, hemp has many other applications, including food, fiber, textiles, biofuel, building materials (hempcrete).

Marijuana is typically harvested for medical and recreational use.

Ways of Traveling with CBD

People use different means of transportation for traveling with CBD. Some of them only require you to know your local laws, whereas others call for more thorough research.

1. In the Car If you’re planning to make your holiday trip in the car, there’s little to worry about. Unless you’re a typical backpacker, you won’t be crossing country/state borders with your CBD, so all you need to take care of is a proper understanding of the local law. As long as the THC content is below the legal limit, you’re safe. And since hemp-derived CBD is treated differently than CBD products from marijuana, you don’t need to carry it in a closed container or declare your possession if you get stopped. Carrying CBD is not a ticketable offense if CBD is legal in your country.

2. On the Train and Other Means of Mass Transit Similar rules apply to traveling with CBD by train and other means of mass transit. Hemp-derived CBD with a legal amount of CBD is fine to bring on trains and buses if you are traveling within the borders of your country. For trains and buses using international connections, we recommend checking with the regulations surrounding hemp CBD products in your destinations because some countries only allow them under certain conditions.

3. On the Plane A few years ago, detaining flyers for having CBD oil in their purses was actually quite common. Thankfully, airports around the world changed their policies and as long as you have a legal product, you’ll be allowed to depart.

But if you want to make your flight fully successful, you need to make sure that CBD is legal where you’re going.

Otherwise, the best-case scenario includes you returning to your country with ruined holidays.

Worse? You can get arrested and end up in jail for smuggling or possession of illicit substances. There are stories of people jailed for traveling with CBD due to violating the local laws — more on that later in our guide.

For now, we’ll only give you one hint: always have a certificate of analysis for your product. It’s the only legitimate way to confirm if its THC content is below the legal limit.

How to Travel with CBD Around the USA: Federal and State Laws

The 2018 Farm Bill has made traveling with CBD around the USA much easier. Hemp has been removed from the Controlled Substances Act and is now considered an agricultural crop.

In other words, hemp and hemp-derived CBD goods are legal in all 50 states as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC.

As with most federal regulations, states can either adapt to the national law or introduce their own changes. In some states, CBD is legal under certain conditions, but before we elaborate on that, let’s take a look at what the US Travel Security Agency says about traveling with CBD. The TSA’s Policy Surrounding Traveling with CBD

The TSA’s website states: “Marijuana and certain cannabis infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law, except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA.”

This policy reflects the one of the federal government. As long as CBD oil comes from hemp and has less than 0.3%, you can fly with it between states.

Because hemp naturally has high amounts of CBD and very little THC, the majority of CBD products are extracted from hemp plants.

This allows manufacturers to sell them without facing potential legal problems. Consumers, on the other hand, can enjoy the benefits of CBD without experiencing the psychoactive side of cannabis.

However, not all CBD oil is sourced from hemp. As mentioned, CBD can also be extracted from marijuana. Some people prefer more THC content because of the enhanced synergy coming from the full spectrum of cannabinoids, and in some states, marijuana is legal.

If this definition fits your CBD oil, then you certainly don’t want to take it on a plane. Traveling with marijuana-derived CBD from one state to another is a federal offence — even if marijuana is legal in both.

TSA officers aren’t looking for CBD oil, but if they suspect they find marijuana as part of security screening, they will start the verification procedure, even if your oil comes from hemp and not marijuana: “TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers. Accordingly, TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but if any illegal substance is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer. TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state or federal authorities.”

In the next section, we’ll cover the legality of hemp CBD oil in all 50 states, with detailed regulations in those states where CBD is conditionally legal.

Legal Status of Hemp-derived CBD By State

take a trip cbd oil

Full Spectrum CBD, Broad Spectrum CBD, Isolate: Which Form of CBD is the Safest to Travel With?

Full-spectrum CBD refers to extracts containing the entire range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other naturally occurring hemp compounds. This means that a full-spectrum product also carries some THC content. The legal THC limit by federal law is 0.3% per volume.

However, some states may not allow full-spectrum CBD. If that’s the law in your destination, you can bring a broad-spectrum product. Broad-spectrum CBD products are similar to full-spectrum ones save for the lack of THC.

If you want to stay on the safe side, then CBD isolate is the best option. True to its name, isolate contains just pure CBD. There are no traces of other hemp compounds in the end product.

Traveling with CBD in Canada

As the pioneer in global cannabis legalization, Canada has a very liberal policy for CBD products.

What forms of CBD Are Legal in Canada?

Because both medical and recreational cannabis have been legalized in Canada, there’s no legal limit for the amount of THC in CBD products. You can legally purchase and possess both marijuana- and hemp-derived CBD.

Can You Travel With CBD Around Canada?

Yes, you can safely travel with up to a 30-day supply of CBD. However, CBD oils brought onto an airplane are subject to an airline’s limit on liquids, which is usually 100 ml in Canada.

Traveling with CBD from Canada to the USA

Traveling with hemp-derived CBD from Canada to the USA is legal because the US federal government removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act in 2018. Nobody’s going to check for your CBD products unless the security suspects you’re trying to smuggle an illicit substance across the borders.

For marijuana-derived CBD, the rules are the same as for exporting hemp from one US state to another. If you try to take marijuana on an international flight, you’ll be charged with a criminal offense and put in jail. Period.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Europe

Europe is one of the most liberal regions of the world when it comes to marijuana and hemp. More countries are decriminalizing weed each year, and some of them are on a good way to legalizing all sources of CBD. Long story short, hemp-derived CBD is legal everywhere except Slovakia, where CBD is considered a schedule 2 drug. The general consensus is that CBD products must contain less than 0.2% THC, although certain countries have set their own limits on its content.

Legal Status of CBD in Europe by Country

Below we give you a brief overview of local CBD laws in countries most frequently visited by people traveling with CBD products.

Traveling and Buying CBD in France

Can I travel with my own CBD products to France? Yes, CBD products with 0.2% THC or less are legal, like in most other EU countries. Where to buy CBD in France CBD stores are quite popular in France, with a rapidly growing e-liquid sector. However, despite the sudden rise in popularity, reports from June indicate that the government is trying to draft out regulations to prohibit certain CBD products across the country. So if you’re visiting France and want to use different CBD formats, we recommend bringing your own.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Italy

Can I travel with my own CBD products to Italy? Yes, as long as they contain 0.6% THC or less. Where to Buy CBD in Italy Despite its thriving cannabis culture, Italy doesn’t have many head shops operating within the country. There are a few mediocre places that sell products from unrecognizable brands. When staying in Italy, you’ll need to either bring your own products or buy them online.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Spain

Can I travel with my own CBD products to Spain? Spain is the epicenter of the European cannabis community. With forward-thinking laws surrounding hemp and marijuana, CBD products from both sources are widely available across the country — although cannabis sales remain in the grey area. You can travel with CBD to Spain if your product contains less than 0.2% THC. Trying to bring marijuana-derived CBD on an international flight is considered a violation of international agreements regarding drug trafficking. Where to Buy CBD in Spain You can buy CBD in grow shops or natural/herbal product stores depending on the region. Spanish companies are known for making some of the best hemp extracts in the world; their crops are grown organically by local farmers as Spain has stricter quality-control regulations than the majority of European countries.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Greece

Where to buy CBD in Greece Similar to Italy, Greece doesn’t have many specialty stores with CBD products. Although CBD oil is quite common in larger cities, reports from tourists indicate their quality leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately, since CBD is legal in Greece, you can bring your own products there and enjoy the quality you’re used to.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Russia

Where to buy CBD in Russia Given its legal status, there are currently no places where you could legally purchase CBD in Russia.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Turkey

Where to Buy CBD in Turkey There are no local manufacturers in Turkey at this point. CBD is not a popular topic in the country and thus you won’t find any head shops specializing in selling CBD isolates, for example. If you’re in Turkey for a longer period, consider buying CBD oil out of Japan, which has the same law when it comes to legal THC limits in their CBD products.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Australia & New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand surprisingly have some of the harshest laws surrounding hemp in the world. Buying CBD over the counter in both countries is not an option.

The only way to obtain CBD products is through the country’s special compassionate program, which is very similar to medical marijuana regulations. Simply put, you need a prescription to buy CBD oil, even if it’s derived from hemp.

The laws will probably change soon, but for now, Australia and New Zealand aren’t most sought after destinations for those traveling with CBD.

Can I travel with my own CBD products to Australia and New Zealand? No, bringing any CBD product to these countries is prohibited. You can only travel with products sourced from the seeds of hemp plants, as they are void of cannabinoids. Where to buy CBD in Australia and New Zealand As mentioned, buying CBD over the counter is not an option in Australia and New Zealand. Online purchases are often seized and can get you into serious trouble with the law.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Latin America

Most countries in Latin America legalized hemp-derived CBD. Cannabidiol is widely available in many forms, including tinctures, capsules, edibles, and vape products. However, not all Latin American countries are as progressive as Uruguay or Chile. The table below illustrates the differences in the legality of hemp-derived CBD in each country. Legal Status of CBD in Latin America By Country

Traveling and Buying CBD in Brazil

Can I travel with my own CBD products to Brazil? Yes, as long as these products contain less than 0.2% THC. Where to Buy CBD in Brazil CBD oil has become legal in the country since 2015. Since that ruling, many manufacturers have entered the marketplace and Brazil has currently one of the fastest growing CBD markets in Latin America. You can buy CBD both locally (in head shops and health centers) and online.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Argentina

Can I travel with my own CBD products to Argentina? Yes, but they must have 0.2% THC or less. Where to buy CBD in Argentina Hemp is legal in Argentina only for personal cultivation and use. Extraction and manufacturing with an intent to sell is prohibited, so there are no local stores that could offer CBD products. You can order CBD online if staying there for a decent period, or bring your own products.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Mexico

Can I travel with my own CBD products to Mexico? Yes, all CBD products containing less than 0.2% THC are widely available over-the-counter in Mexico. As long as your supplements meet the legal THC limit, you can also bring your own CBD there. Where to Buy CBD Oil in Mexico Mexico is one of the best countries to buy CBD in Latin America. CBD products are widely available in head shops, vape stores, and wellness centers. You can also order them online.

Traveling and Buying CBD in Chile

Traveling and Buying CBD in Asia

Asia is the origin continent of hemp and has been used in many Asian cultures for hundreds of years. Current cannabis policies in Asia are mostly very conservative; the status of hemp and CBD varies a lot from one country to another.

While China is a world-leading producer of hemp, countries like Singapore prohibit all cannabis products with harsh penalties, including a combination of heavy financial fines with prison time.

5 Tips for First-time CBD Travelers

Here are the 5 amendments for people traveling with CBD for the first time:

  • Review the CBD policy for your destination before you depart : it’s a dead giveaway but it should be your top priority if you don’t want to end up in prison for drug trafficking crimes.
  • Research additional limits on CBD as well : do your crew lines allow CBD on board? Can you bring full-spectrum products into your destination? Or does the country only allow CBD isolates? The fact CBD is legal where you travel to doesn’t mean you can go all out and use every form of CBD there.
  • Bring your product’s CoA with you : the certificate of analysis is a lab report confirming the cannabinoid profile of your product. It’s the only way to prove that your CBD has the legal amount of THC during any security check.
  • Buy travel-size CBD : this is particularly important for liquid limits. Since most people take CBD in the form of oil drops, they will be subjected to standard airport liquid restrictions; airports usually allow travelers to bring 100 ml bottles on board. You may also consider buying a vape pen. Vape pens are very travel-friendly for all means of traffic.
  • Leave your CBD at home : if CBD is legal in your country of destination but you don’t know what the additional limits on CBD products are, you can leave your CBD oil at home and research your opportunities to buy a replacement oil somewhere upon arrival.

Can You Be Jailed for Traveling with CBD Around the World?

If you purposely try to bring a CBD product with higher than permitted levels of THC, or you’re traveling with a mislabeled product, you can get arrested and be put into trial by the local court under their jurisdiction.

The severity of punishments for cannabis-related offenses varies greatly between countries, but if you want to stay away from travel, we suggest you always carry CBD from hemp and make sure you familiarize yourself with cannabis policies at your destination place.

Traveling with hemp-derived CBD is tolerated in most countries around the world, but it’s always good to err on the side of caution — especially on a foreign territory.

Final Thoughts on Traveling with CBD Around the World

While many people are still afraid of facing legal charges — or, at the very least, a delay in their flight caused by extra security control — traveling with CBD becomes more and more popular every month.

If you must travel with CBD products around the world, always have a certificate of analysis at hand, and above all, remember to research the laws regarding cannabidiol at your destination.

Now you’ve got all your research in one place. We hope you’ve found this guide useful and that you’ll use it for your future trips!

Tiny Little Changes

Trip Drinks Review: Is This Botanical Beverage Worth It?

Trip Drinks

Right now, I suspect I am an advertiser’s dream when it comes to soft drinks – especially anything with interesting added ingredients and health benefits. I no longer drink alcohol , so am always in the market for interesting new “grown up drinks” – which is why I’ve already reviewed so many for this site.

As is often the case, I discovered Trip’s range of “CBD Infused” drinks via a targeted ad on Facebook. I was intrigued enough to put in an order, and in this Trip Drinks review, I let you know my views on the whole range.

I’m always excited to try out new drinks, but I only tend to order them more than once if they really impress – especially as so many new products are coming out at the moment.

To find out whether Trip Drinks got a second order from me, you’ll have to read on.

NOTE: I’ve now also written a Trip CBD Oil review .

What Are Trip Drinks?

Trip Drinks is a range of healthy soft drinks infused with CBD, and a range of natural botanicals including lemon balm and ginseng. Although it’s a relatively new range, it has gathered considerable momentum already, with positive praise from the likes of Forbes, Vogue and The Guardian.

Sold as a product that can help you to “find your calm amidst the every day chaos,” the drinks are among many products currently hitting the market that incorporate natural, herbal ingredients that have various health and anti-anxiety benefits.

Trip CBD infused peach and ginger drink

What is In Trip Drinks?

Trip drinks have a base of water and natural fruit juice concentrates. They’re naturally sweetened with steviol, an ingredient many health-conscious people (myself included) prefer to chemicals like aspartame and sucralose.

The interesting part is the added botanical ingredients, and the inclusion of a small dose of CBD (cannabidiol) – a non-psychoactive ingredient derived from the cannabis plant.

CBD is all the rage these days, with many fans (again, myself included), who report benefits such as a greater sense of calm, reduced anxiety, and less pain and inflammation.

Here’s a quick run-down of all the botanicals included in Trip drinks, along with their perceived benefits. I must emphasise that these are benefits they are widely thought to have. I’m not making any medical claims here – this is a personal blog, not a scientific paper.

CBD : This increasingly popular ingredient is a massive deal these days. It’s often used as a natural remedy for anxiety, for lots of pain-related conditions such as arthritis and neuropathy, and to relieve nausea. It does NOT get you “high,” in case you’re wondering! To find out more about it, check out this guide from Harvard University .

Lemon Balm: Lemon balm is from the mint family, and people have long believed it to promote relaxation and to aid in many ailments. These include headaches, nausea and menstrual cramps. This Healthline article discusses several studies into those claims.

Lemon Balm Plant

Ginseng: This is a supplement that has been used for centuries, and is particularly popular in China and Korea. It is thought to help with everything from cognitive function to blood sugar levels. That said, there is limited medical evidence for these long-believed claims.

L-Theanine : L-Theanine is an amino acid that naturally occurs in tea. It’s said to be good for memory and clarity, and many people believe it’s a good compliment to caffeine. I am one of those people, as it seems to “take the edge” off the jittery buzz. (L Theanine is also found in Three Spirit’s Non Alcoholic Spirits range – reviewed here – where I have particularly noticed that positive effect).

Chamomile: Most of us are familiar with chamomile tea. It’s a hugely popular ingredient to promote sleep and relaxation.

Turmeric: The only Trip drink that includes turmeric is the peach and ginger variety. As well as giving the drink a striking orange colour, turmeric is seen (particularly in India) as a medicinal herb, used for everything from hayfever to depression and itching. As with the ginseng, there isn’t yet much in the way of peer-reviewed evidence to support these beliefs.

Trip Drinks Review: Flavour By Flavour

In a moment, we’ll move on to the “effects” of Trip drinks, and discuss whether you notice any tangible benefits. But first, let’s look at something that’s arguably more important – what they taste like.

Trip Lemon Basil Drink

This particular drink provides exactly what it says on the can. It’s probably the most “herbal” of the three in terms of both aroma and flavour. It tastes of lemon, and it tastes of basil – so I guess we can say “mission accomplished!”

The flavour is in perfect balance, and it’s an agreeable herbal taste, not a nasty Jägermeister-like herbal taste!

I’m not convinced it would appeal to everybody, but I enjoy it very much.

VERDICT: 8/10

Trip Elderflower Mint

Until I tried Trip drinks, I had no idea that I would enjoy a drink that tastes – frankly – like Wrigley’s Spearmint chewing gum. It really does!

That may sound a bit odd, but it’s genuinely not a bad thing. I have to confess that I can’t taste much in the way of elderflower, but the overall flavour is really good. This is probably my favourite of the three.

VERDICT: 9/10

Trip Peach Ginger

The Peach Ginger is the one that includes turmeric, and as you can see from the photo near the top of this review, it gives the drink a very bright orange colour.

Flavour-wise it’s a strong ginger, but not an overly spicy ginger. It’s very refreshing, although the ginger overpowers the peach a little. It’s a mouth-filling taste, with a fresh aroma. I don’t know if it’s possible for something to “smell healthy,” but it kind of does.

Trip Drinks

I’m going to have to disappoint the hedonists reading this by saying that if you’re expecting Trip drinks to blast you into the stratosphere, you’re going to be sorely disappointed!

Despite the “Trip” name, these are very much a wellbeing product, and any “effects” will be subtle at best. Let’s be realistic, folks, they sell these in Sainsbury’s!

However, I like to test products throughly, and with an open mind. With that ethos, I drank several of these before creating my Trip Drinks review. I did so at times when I could have a good chance to really focus in on whether I “noticed anything,” such as when I was about to sit down for a period of uninterrupted work.

I first want to talk about the CBD. Something I’ve not revealed until now is that I am a regular (daily) user of CBD. I find it enormously helpful for my anxiety and general state of mind. I am strongly considering setting up a separate site to discuss it, and to review the products I use.

With that in mind, I do (for fear of sounding conceited) know a LOT about CBD. And one thing I know is that the dose of CBD needed to feel positive effects can vary wildly from person to person. I also know that – for most – the 15mg “dose” in a can of Trip is a pretty small one.

This is compounded by the bioavailability of CBD when you eat or drink it. That sounds awfully technical, but it essentially relates to how much of the substance is actually absorbed by the body. Some estimates are that it is as low as 4%.

This is why I vape my CBD, as it’s a much more “bioavailable” method of taking it. And I use much bigger doses than 15mg! That’s very much another story, but my point is that the 15mg dose in Trip (and, indeed, in almost every CBD drink on the market) is probably too low to really do much for many people.

This by no means implies that there’s anything disingenuous about the product or its marketing. All I’m saying is not to expect miracles, nor to assume CBD does nothing for you if this is the first and only such product you try.

The Other Botanical Ingredients

The other herbal ingredients in Trip are a blend intended to promote stress relief, relaxation and better digestion. I’ve tried most of them before – alone or in other products – at various times.

I have to say I was intrigued by the presence of chamomile. It’s something usually seen as a bedtime supplement, so I was concerned Trip would make me sleepy. Thankfully it didn’t.

I’ve generally been having a can of Trip mid afternoon. This is when I’d often reach for a second can of Diet Coke – a decision I frequently regret afterwards because it leaves me feeling washed-out and jittery.

Drinking Trip Lemon Basil at my Computer

Drinking Trip doesn’t suddenly make me feel “different.” It’s not like when I vape CBD, which can provide a really notable sense of calm, and a slowdown of racing thoughts. However, I do tend to feel focussed and quite “zen” after drinking Trip. It may be placebo, to an extent, but millions of people believe in these ingredients, and have done for hundreds of years.

My digestion has also been very good since I’ve been drinking these regularly. However, I should say that digestion doesn’t really give me much trouble anyway, since I quit drinking alcohol!

All in all, I have a “what’s not to like?” perception of these drinks. They taste good, they seem healthy, and they are clearly a better choice than more Diet Coke while I’m sitting at my desk.

I couldn’t swear that my focus and level of calm would be any different without them – but that goes for every supplement and health product out there!

Ingredients, Calories and Nutrition

Whenever I do a drinks review, I like to have a good look at the ingredients and nutritional information.

There’s nothing in Trip Drinks that seriously worries me. There’s water (it doesn’t specify spring water), fruit juices from concentrates, the CBD and botanicals, and steviol glycosides as the sweetener. One addition that many of the drinks I review do without is erythritol, a flavour enhancer – just so you know!

The drinks are 20 calories per can , so not much to concern you there. They are also vegan, and have no added sugar.

One thing that’s a bit of a shame is that other than the CBD, Trip don’t tell us the quantities of the ginseng, L-Theanine etc. That’s quite common in products like this, and presumably they don’t want to give away the trade secrets. However, it does leave you wondering how “meaningful” a quantity of those ingredients you’re consuming.

Presentation

I only include a presentation section in these reviews when there’s something positive to say. While the presentation didn’t blow me away as much as when I did my review of Jukes Coridalities , the drinks do come in a nice box with a leaflet, when you buy a small mixed case. This is shown in the earlier photos.

Ethics and Eco Credentials

Trip Drinks come with 100% recyclable packaging, and everything is made in the UK.

I always find it interesting to see what these “craft” brands do to contribute to wider society. While I didn’t see anything on the website about charity initiatives or donations, the company does offer some discounts – for healthcare workers, key workers, and 18-25s.

This is a great initiative, and it follows the lead of lots of US-based CBD businesses, which are generally a little more evolved than those here in the UK.

Trip discounts

As we near the end of this Trip Drinks review, we come to the all important question of price.

As with many things, the price goes down for larger orders. If you buy a case of 24 cans, this costs £39, which works out to £1.63 per can. If you buy a pack of six (which is also available as a mix with all three flavours), this costs £14 – or £2.33 per can.

I think the pricing is well pitched – it’s not cheap, but it’s not luck-pushingly expensive either. And plenty of artisan drink makers DO push their luck on price.

Trip Drinks Coupon Codes

Use can use the following code to make savings on drinks and other products from the Trip website:

Use code AFFTRIP15 here to save 15% on spends over £50

As I said at the start of my review, the way I truly judge a product is whether I buy it again after my initial order.

Well, I’m pleased to say I’m now on my second box of Trip Drinks, and I think they’re going to end up in my permanent rotation.

As somebody who doesn’t drink alcohol, it’s nice to have some alternatives in my armoury. I’m thankful to live in a time when there are SO many options, with more coming to the marketplace all the time.

Don’t expect some earth-shattering effect from the CBD and other ingredients. If you notice anything it will be subtle, not profound. However, they do seem to make me feel rather “zen.” They also have great flavour. They are pleasantly “different,” without being too weird to be enjoyable!

Recommended.

Where To Buy Trip Drinks

Trip drinks are available across the UK, and I’ve even seen them in my local Sainsbury’s – but the easiest place to get them is on the company’s website. Pleasingly, UK shipping is free, and the company also ships internationally.

This was a great review thank you. As someone who is looking to go alcohol free it’s lovely to see drinks on offer that can replace alcohol without having to order a lemonade!

Hi Lucy, You’ll find plenty of other alcohol-free alternatives on the site too 🙂

Best wishes,

Is anyone able to tell me how much turmeric is in one drink please?

I don’t know off hand Lisa, I’m afraid, but I will look on the can next time I have some in the house!

Thank you for your detailed review. It is really helpful to have such detailed insight. I do have an issue with their discount policy. I find the notion that only certain workers are “key” distasteful. Why are not factory workers processing food, or bus drivers, or indeed anyone providing a service key and thus entitled to a discount. The fact that they offer NHS workers and healthcare workers a 50% discount tells me the drinks are way over priced for everyone. Again thanks for your review on the content of the these drinks.

I am a recovering alcoholic.. are these safe for me, as obviously concerned about the CPD .. thank you as don’t think these are mind altering, plus it could be a good promotion 😉thank you

Hi Pat – I’m reluctant to give you a firm answer on that. I’ve been sober for over two years, and drink these as well as alcohol free beers and all kinds of similar things. But I know that some alcoholics find NA beers triggering – so no two people are the same. I don’t honestly THINK Trip would cause you a problem, and it certainly doesn’t make me feel “altered” – but everybody’s different. 🙂

Hi Ben, excellent article, thank you.

I’m interested in starting with CBD and your mention of a vaping solution intrigued me… Please can you let me know any recommendations you have in this area?

Hi Andy – If you’re in the UK, I’d suggest having a look at products from HighKind and Orange County CBD.

Thanks for this review. I’ll probably give these Trip drinks a trial based on what you’ve written. Thanks also for your other reviews. Reading them has eaten up a big chunk of my afternoon! I’ve been on the wagon since February and tried a few options: red wine (both went down well – down the sink that is); no alc gin (Gordon’s is OK but it’s just a herby drink really. I shove lots of ice, some fresh mint and tonic in there and pretend it’s a mojito). Beer is the most successful. I notice you didn’t mention (though you’ve probably sampled) Adnam’s Ghost Ship 0.5 (full flavoured with a slight citrus finish) and my favourite so far, Erdinger Alkoholfrei 0.5 (very much like a pilsner so softer on the palate). Thanks again for your encouraging, informative and well-written pieces.

Hi Jeff – thanks for reading and glad you’ve enjoyed my articles!

Yes, I’m familiar with the Ghost Ship and like it a lot, especially on the rare occasions when I find it on draft 🙂 The Erdinger is good too. Brookly Special Effects is one I’m particularly enjoying right now, along with Clear Head, from Bristol Brewery, which also donates money to mental health charities.

All the best, Ben

Ps. For non alcoholic gin, my wife and I have both been impressed with Tanqueray.

My husband is really struggling with anxiety at the moment and I was hoping these drinks might be the answer for him. However, you said about the dose not really being enough for most people. Vape isn’t something he would consider, are there any other alternatives that could be more successful?

I think anxiety is a huge problem for many people at the moment, especially those of us living through these grim times in the UK.

You could maybe start him off with Trip’s CBD oil , which will give a much stronger effect, and he will be able to experiment with the dosage. Here’s my affiliate link 🙂

It’s worth trying to use the code AFFTRIPCASH – which should give you 15% off spends over £35.

I’ve found CBD hugely helpful for anxiety – if nothing else it can help with sleep. However, it’s not a miracle cure. I’ve had some bad anxiety myself recently that CBD hasn’t been enough to fix – but I think it’s largely situational and being surrounded by such doom and gloom. It’s certainly worth a try!

All the best to you both.

Can you drink trip if you’re on warfarin

Hi Richard,

You would need to check that with your doctor. I cannot provide medical advice and I’m almost certain any CBD company would say the same.

You can get CBD oil in your coffee, buy CBD oil bath bombs, CBD oil lotions, and even CBD oil dog treats. It’s a buzz-worthy topic in the health and wellness space, but many travelers are left confused about its legality, especially when they’re considering taking certain products on a plane or traveling internationally.

First off, let’s define what CBD oil actually is. According to Merriam-Webster , CBD is “a nonintoxicating cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp,” and that CBD oils contain cannabidiol. The types of oils that we’re referring to are oils derived from the hemp plant (not marijuana) and contain only a minimal amount (less than 0.3 percent) of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is the intoxicating or psychoactive compound of the plant that makes users feel “high.” It’s common knowledge that this minimal amount of THC does not produce noticeably intoxicating side effects.

Thanks to some recent legal changes around CBD at the federal level, it’s becoming a bit more straightforward. Here’s what I learned about traveling with CBD oil after speaking with Sherri Tutkus, BSN-RN and founder/CEO of the GreenNurse Group , and Joshua Bauchner, a lawyer for the Canafarma Corporation .

Traveling with CBD Oil Domestically

The type of CBD oil that’s derived from hemp oil is what’s legal at a federal level (as of the 2018 Farm Bill ) and therefore allowed to be taken across state borders, and, yes, on flights. Other CBD oils, like the type that’s derived from marijuana, are still illegal in some states—so it’s not recommended to take those types across state borders.

You can tell the difference between the two types of CBD oil by reading the product’s label and identifying the amount of THC in it. Only hemp-derived CBD oils (with THC levels below 0.3 percent) are legal to fly with or be taken across state borders in the U.S.  It’s also important to note that while CBD oil is legal at the federal level, certain state laws vary in terms of possession of any type of CBD oil.

Here’s the status of flying with CBD oil in the U.S. as of January 2020, according to the TSA’s website :

“Marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA. (See the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, Pub. L. 115-334.) TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state or federal authorities.

“TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers. Accordingly, TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but if any illegal substance is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.”

Here’s a more light-hearted explanation from TSA’s Instagram:

View this post on Instagram Are we cool? We like to think we’re cool. We want you to have a pleasant experience at the airport and arrive safely at your destination. But getting caught while trying to fly with marijuana or cannabis-infused products can really harsh your mellow. Let us be blunt: TSA officers DO NOT search for marijuana or other illegal drugs. Our screening procedures are focused on security and detecting potential threats. But in the event a substance appears to be marijuana or a cannabis infused product, we’re required by federal law to notify law enforcement. This includes items that are used for medicinal purposes. #traveltips #travel #traveling #aviationlife #marijuana #420 A post shared by TSA (@tsa) on Apr 20, 2019 at 11:48am PDT

As an extra cautionary step, double-check the CBD oil possession laws of both the state you’re traveling to and the state you’re traveling from. The website CBD Origin recommends printing out a product’s lab report and have it available if needed to verify the cannabinoid content to any inquiring authorities. And if you’re traveling with CBD oil products as medication, you should always travel with your prescription handy, as you would any other prescribed medicine.

“Consumers can consider traveling with CBD products to be the same as traveling with any other over-the-counter supplements,” says Joshua Bauchner, Canafarma Corp. Legal Counsel. “TSA guidelines as of January 2020 specifically state that consumers can travel with CBD products as long as they contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis, or that are approved by the FDA.”

Traveling with CBD Oil Outside of the U.S.

International rules and regulations on CBD are less clear, so if you’re looking to travel abroad with CBD oil you’ll need to research the laws of the country you’re traveling to. However, professionals strongly advise to err on the side of caution and leave products with any cannabinoids (including hemp-derived oils) at home, especially because some countries have much stricter drug laws.

Cruising regulations for CBD oil are confusing. Some cruise lines ban CBD oil altogether, so it’s best to contact the cruise line directly if you need to travel with CBD oil on your cruise. Remember, there are security scanners as you board a cruise ship, so there’s no hiding CBD products.

The Benefits of CBD Oil for Travelers

CBD oil has many uses. It can help travelers regulate their body’s organs, immune system, and neurotransmitter signaling systems, which can help alleviate symptoms of jet lag, anxiousness, and sleeplessness.

For travelers specifically, Tutkus recommends CBD oil “for long flights to decrease stiffness and soreness, to help regulate sleep patterns with time change and jet lag, and to help decrease anxiety related to the unknowns of traveling.” She says “some people have even replaced their prescription [bensodiazepines] with CBD oil, instead of having to take a Xanax or Ativan prior to a flight.”

If you’re nervous about flying with any of these products in your possession, then take it ahead of your flight and find a legal place to buy it on the ground.

What to Look for When Purchasing CBD Oil for Travel

If you’re looking to purchase CBD oil for travel, use the acronym ‘FLOW’ which is a way to choose a product that is up to cannabis-nurse-approved standards:

F: Flowering Strains of Hemp or Cannabis

L: Lab tested for purity and potency, COA

W: Whole Plant

According to Tutkus, you should also ask the following questions:

  • Is it made from industrial hemp or flowering strains of hemp?
  • What is the extraction process?
  • What is the carrier oil?
  • Is it whole plant?
  • Is it tested for purity and potency?
  • Is there a certificate of analysis that reflects what the label says?

Again, only hemp-derived CBD oils (with THC levels below 0.3 percent) are legal to fly with or be taken across state borders in the U.S.

Additionally, the FDA has separate regulations on CBD oil labeling, including that it cannot be marketed as a dietary supplement—that information can be found here .

Tips for Traveling with CBD Oil

There are a variety of different types of ways to consume CBD oil including topical creams, edibles (which have been questioned in terms of effectiveness ), and vaping devices. Here’s the lowdown on traveling with each.

For all edibles, gels, lotions, oils, and other liquids, you should follow and comply with normal TSA 3-1-1 rules when you’re traveling with CBD oil. You don’t need to declare them separately, but you shouldn’t hide them, either. While the TSA’s statements make it seem like they are not looking for cannabis products, you’re still subject to search, which could lead to delays at the airport.

According to the TSA, you may bring electronic devices and vaping devices (including batteries and atomizers) stored in your carry-on bags, but not checked bags.

The only type of CBD oil product that Tutkus doesn’t recommend traveling with in the U.S. is hemp flower, because of its similarities to the cannabis flower. Lab results are the only way to tell the difference between the two plants.

The Best Types of CBD Oil to Travel With

Tutkus’ go-to products for travel are Irie Bliss Goddess Oil , Apothecary Care Full Spectrum CBD tincture , Apothecary Care Full Spectrum Daytime Gummies , Apothecary Care Full Spectrum Nighttime Capsules , and SOS lotion (note that this product is 4 oz).

Irie Bliss also makes a CBD Pain Balm stick (similar to a deodorant stick) that can be applied as a roll-on for quick application. And Jules Battel NP-BC for the GreenNurse Group says she’s, “a big fan of the tiny sublingual oral spray ”.

Bauchner recommends other alternatives like Yooforic’s Hemp-Oil Infused Chewing Gum , and Organic Hemp Oil Tincture as they don’t require a vaporizer to consume.

Other FAQs About Traveling with CBD Oil

Can dogs detect CBD oil at airports?

“Most scent dogs are actually trained to smell terpenes, which are the components in the plant that give the plant its smell and flavor,” Tutkus says. “These dogs usually don’t react to hemp-extracted CBD oil products because the terpene levels are so small that it won’t catch the dog’s attention. If the CBD product is the whole plant and rich in aromatic terpenes there is a possibility that the drug-sniffing dog could smell it.”

Do you have to declare CBD oil when traveling?

According to the TSA’s above statements, you do not need to declare CBD oil products that are federally legal in the U.S.

Can you have CBD oil in national parks?

National parks fall under federal regulation; you can have hemp-derived CBD oils in national parks but nothing more, regardless of the state’s law on other CBD and cannabis products.

Traveling with cbd — here’s what you need to know.

Thinking of traveling with CBD? The TSA allows you to fly with CBD domestically, but international travel is another story.

Read this before packing your bags.

take a trip cbd oil

In this article, we’re going to help you travel smarter with CBD.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has quickly become a favorite natural health supplement — and it’s everywhere. You can find it in capsules, oils, gummies, chocolate , and even lotions. As a cannabis-derived compound, flying with CBD or crossing international borders can pose a huge risk. If you make the wrong move, you can find yourself in legal trouble.

CBD has been recognized for its myriad of health benefits and hemp-derived CBD is federally legal throughout the United States. However, not all states are friendly towards cannabis-based products.

Before you pack your toiletry bag with your favorite supplements, be sure to conduct your research to avoid suspected violations of law.

In this guide, you’ll find helpful advice for traveling with CBD in the US and internationally.

CBD stands for cannabidiol , and it belongs to a class of natural compounds called cannabinoids derived from hemp and marijuana plants. Although CBD comes from the cannabis plant, unlike its psychoactive cousin, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not illicit intoxicating effects.

Many people turn to CBD as a natural supplement to optimize their health, alleviate pain, manage anxiety, and support sleep.

Given all the potential health benefits of CBD , it makes sense to pack CBD in your toiletry bag alongside melatonin (to combat jet lag), pain killers, other health supplements, and medication, as many people consider CBD a staple in their health and wellness regimen.

Here’s why you might want to bring CBD with you when you travel.

Traveling across time zones can wreak havoc on your sleep cycle.

One of the many reasons people turn to CBD is to help regulate their sleep cycle . In high doses, CBD has been observed to have sedative-like effects, helping you to gently fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night without waking up feeling drowsy the next morning.

Not everyone travels well. Traveling can bring about a lot of stress and anxiety, which is compounded when you have a fear of flying or are on a hectic schedule.

CBD can be an excellent supplement for managing anxiety symptoms when combined with other stress-reduction approaches, like regular exercise, a balanced diet, working with a counselor, and prioritizing sleep.

CBD is most notably famous for its’ anti-inflammatory effects , which can help to combat pain, tissue damage, and mood disorders.

There are dozens of physiological processes that regulate the body’s inflammatory response, and CBD is an effective anti-inflammatory because it works through multiple pathways rather than addressing only one.

The Legality Of CBD

The cannabis plant has had a very long and complicated history in the United States, but as more research emerges about the potential health benefits of cannabinoids, and social acceptance of marijuana becomes more popular, laws eventually adapt.

The 2018 US Farm Bill was a game-changing moment for the CBD industry.

The bill states that if CBD is derived from the hemp plant with less than 0.3 percent THC, you can produce it, harvest it, and sell CBD extract.

While hemp and marijuana are both Cannabis sativa plants, their phytochemical makeup and uses are different, and therefore, they exist on different sides of the federal law.

Marijuana and its derivatives remain illegal under federal law.

In the United States , marijuana is any cannabis plant with more than 0.3 percent THC by weight. Other countries may have different THC thresholds for classifying marijuana. For example, Mexico deems any cannabis plant over 0.1% THC to be marijuana.

Delta 9 THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis and it’s listed as a Schedule 1 drug in the United States because of its potential for abuse and has no medical benefit.

Current research demonstrates that this isn’t exactly true, but laws and societal stigmas are slow to reflect this, and marijuana remains a restricted substance. However, states including California , Oregon , Illinois , New York , and Maine have fully legalized marijuana for recreational and medicinal use.

Hemp contains a high CBD profile with less than 0.3 percent THC. At these THC levels, it’s highly unlikely to illicit intoxicating effects, which makes it ideal for supplement and medicinal uses.

Before buying any CBD product, look to make sure that it’s made from hemp crops or you could be violating the law, according to state or federal authorities (depending on your location).

Delta 8 THC is an analog of delta 9. It can be made from hemp in order to comply with federal laws, yet provides much of the same psychoactivity as delta 9 THC.

Delta 8 THC laws are notoriously unclear — and they change all the time. Currently, about 32 states consider delta 8 THC legal, but not explicitly.

Delta 8 THC is legal by proxy because the language on most state and federal cannabis regulations specifically mention delta 9 THC — not delta 8. As long as delta 8 is made from hemp and contains below the federal limit of delta 9 THC — it’s considered (loosely) legal.

Because of the complexity of these laws, and challenges differentiating between delta 9 and delta 8 THC without high-tech lab equipment (something the TSA isn’t going to have kicking around), you’re better off leaving the delta 8 at home — even if the state you’re travelling to permits it.

Tread carefully in these waters, the laws regarding traveling with CBD still aren’t clear — and if you aren’t well versed in the laws surrounding cannabis in each state, you could end up in hot water.

The TSA recently changed its stance for traveling with CBD across states.

The TSA allows medical marijuana (with a license) and hemp-derived CBD (manufactured in accordance with the Farm Bill) to travel within the United States. The CBD product must be FDA approved, containing less than 0.3% THC.

The tricky thing is not all TSA officers understand the differences between hemp-derived CBD and marijuana products.

This can lead to confiscation of products and delays in security. There’s not much you can do to get around this, but to ensure your CBD products are properly labeled and that you have the necessary paperwork with you if you’re flying with prescribed cannabis.

It might also be a good idea to keep the statement about the TSA’s stance on flying with CBD bookmarked on your phone browser beforehand.

When it comes to flying internationally, there’s a different story and we’ll jump into that shortly.

What States Is CBD Oil Legal In?

Although the federal government has legalized hemp-based CBD products, not all states have a friendly view on CBD products — and they may have local restrictions on CBD.

For example, Nebraska and Idaho restrict any CBD product unless it’s 100% THC-free. This means that broad-spectrum or CBD isolate products are your only options here.

If you plan on bringing CBD on your travel across state borders that you check with the local laws before packing your bags.

If you’re crossing borders and get caught with CBD oil or any cannabis product, the most hopeful outcome is confiscation.

However, since you’re breaking the law, the border has the right to deny entry and turn you around — or you could face hefty fines and even jail time (depending on the country and how much CBD product you have on hand).

Can I Travel With CBD Internationally?

You should not travel with CBD if you’re flying internationally, even if CBD is legal in your own country and the country you land in. Some countries do not differentiate between marijuana and hemp — so your CBD oil could be illegal in the country you’re visiting.

Marijuana is legal in Canada for recreational use, and many people enjoy using CBD products derived from hemp legally. Although CBD is legal on both sides of the border, it’s illegal to cross the border with any cannabis product.

According to the Canadian government website , you must declare your cannabis products when entering the country, even if you’re authorized to carry them for medicinal purposes. Failing to do so can result in getting turned around at the border, fines, or entry bans.

In Mexico , CBD derived from hemp is legal to purchase. However, the cannabis plant is considered hemp as long as it contains no more than 0.3% THC, which means your full-spectrum CBD product could be prohibited.

While our Southern neighbor is moving towards a friendlier legal stance towards the cannabis plant, it’s still not recommended to cross the border whether driving or flying with any cannabis-infused products, including legal CBD oil.

According to the European Union, CBD derived from hemp with no more than 0.2% THC is legal. However, each country may have its own regulations surrounding this subject. The biggest issue around this gray area is that there’s no clear distinction of how CBD should be classified (food product, health supplement, or a drug).

Either way, you should not travel to Europe with any cannabis-infused products, including CBD, when traveling to Europe. Many European countries have legalized CBD , so you can shop for it at the local shops.

Factors To Consider When Buying CBD & Traveling

For the most part, you’re safe to travel within the United States with your CBD product as long as it’s made from legal hemp crops. But we do not advise traveling outside the country with any cannabis-derived products, even if it’s legal on both sides of the border, as it can land you in some heat.

Here are some factors to consider when buying CBD and traveling within the United States.

Aside from ensuring you’re only purchasing hemp-derived CBD for legal reasons, it’s important that you consider the extract type if you’re using it to combat some of the physical and emotional exhaustion associated with travel.

CBD products are available in three main extract types:

  • Full-spectrum
  • CBD isolate/distillate
  • Broad-spectrum (THC-free)

Full-spectrum cannabidiol (CBD) oil remains the most recommended type for its therapeutic properties. It contains a range of cannabinoids and terpenes that compound and balance the health benefits of CBD, and it may legally contain up to 0.3% THC.

Full-spectrum CBD oil and other products will do a better job at supporting some sleep, anxiety, and inflammation over its CBD isolate extracts.

However, the trace amounts of THC in these products could cause you some grief at the border. Try going with one of the other 100% THC-free options if you’re planning for a trip.

For 100% THC-free products, we recommend going with broad-spectrum as it still contains a diverse cannabinoid range.

When traveling with CBD domestically on a plane, you still need to consider the TSA regulations for flying with liquids.

CBD oils are perhaps the most popular CBD products and offer a lot of versatility. According to the TSA, you are permitted to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, creams, gels, and aerosols on your carry-on bag. Each container must have no more than 0.3 ounces (100 mL).

CBD capsules or gummies may be the more travel-friendly option as they don’t pose the risk of leaking and you can carry a larger supply of CBD for longer trips.

Checking with a CBD product’s independent lab testing should be an important step in your shopping decision.

The CBD industry is still fairly new, and there’s a lot of product that make it onto the market that doesn’t comply with federal rules or doesn’t contain the listed amount of active ingredients — they’re essentially selling snake oil.

Third-party lab testing is a way for CBD brands to maintain customer transparency and ensure the safety of their products. You can look to make sure the CBD oil does not contain more than 0.3% THC, and that it has the listed CBD content. The lab results should also tell you that it’s free from potential contaminants (solvents, pesticides, mold, heavy metal).

take a trip cbd oil

Hemp CBD is federally legal in the United States, but some states may have other regulations.

When in doubt, always check with your local laws when traveling with your favorite cannabis-based products within the United States.

While the TSA does permit you to travel with CBD within the country, it’s up to you to ensure that you comply with airline regulations, which means you should make sure that you have an appropriate amount on you, that you declare it, and that you’re traveling into another state with lenient laws towards CBD.

That being said, it’s important that you do not travel outside the United States with any cannabis product. Even though it may be legalized on both sides of the border.

If you’re traveling to another country where hemp and CBD are legal, you’re better off purchasing CBD when you arrive rather than risk potential legal issues trying to bring it with you from home.

Trip CBD drinks – Our full review of these popular CBD drinks

Trip CBD drinks

Published by Finn Hayden

It's official - CBD has gone mainstream. This cannabinoid, which is derived from the cannabis plant, was for a long time misunderstood and unfairly regarded as a bit of a fad. But as the industry has become more regulated we've seen CBD brands have to step up their game and create products which are actually good, meaning more people are

A brand that has helped to make CBD more accepted by the mainstream is Trip. You can now walk into supermarkets like Sainsbury's and Waitrose and see cans of Trip CBD on the shelves. You can even get a can of this CBD drink as part of a meal deal!

It's the CBD drinks from Trip which have really helped the brand to grow in popularity. We thought it would be interesting to take a close look at the Trip CBD drinks and fully review them, let's get into it:

Quick summary : we really like the taste of all of the Trip CBD drinks, which is why we included them in our guide to the best CBD drinks we've tried. But we still think that 15mg per can isn't quite enough to feel a benefit for most people, and you'll feel more benefit from CBD oil or CBD gummies .

What's in the Trip CBD drinks?

Each can of Trip CBD contains 15mg of CBD, which we'd describe as quite a standard dosage of CBD to consume. The FSA very recently set their recommended daily intake of CBD at 10mg , which would suggest that people shouldn't drink a whole can of Trip CBD in one go. But we think that's ridiculous, and provided you take a few days off every 2 weeks or so, you're fine to consume a can of Trip CBD per day.

Trip CBD drinks ingredients

We've even started to see these QR codes in Holland and Barrett stores (pictured) next to the section where the Trip CBD drinks are kept. When you scan the QR code, it takes you to a page with information about the 10mg CBD recommendation.

Trip CBD QR code holland and barrett

The 15mg dosage of CBD is the same for all flavours of the standard Trip CBD drinks, so even if you're consuming different varieties of the drink, you'll always be getting a consistent dosage of 15mg.

The only real difference between the drinks which is worth noting is the amount of sugar and calories, but even then it's all very similar. The lowest in calories and sugar is Elderflower Mint, which contains 7.6kcal per 100ml and 1.5g of sugar per 100ml, Lemon Basil contains 8kcal and 1.7gof sugar per 100ml, and Peach Ginger contains 8.4kcal and 1.8g of sugar per 100ml. We find this interesting because we really like the sweetness of the Elderflower Mint, even though it's the lowest in sugar.

Trip CBD flavours

There are currently 3 different flavours of Trip CBD drink that you can choose from - Elderflower Mint, Peach Ginger & Lemon Basil. Of the 3, our favourite is definitely Elderflower Mint, which is quite sweet but has a lovely minty aftertaste.

Boost Up, Calm Down, and Cold Brew

There are a couple of other CBD drinks from Trip which aren't as popular as the standard range but are still worth including in this review. 2 of these drinks are called 'Boost Up' and 'Calm Down', and the other is a cold brew coffee. We haven't tried any of these yet but plan to. The Boost Up and Calm Down drinks contain 25mg of CBD instead of 15mg, so they're quite a bit stronger than the standard drinks from the Trip range. The cold brew coffee is still only 15mg of CBD per can.

We mentioned in the introduction that you can get a can of Trip CBD as part of the meal deal at Sainsbury's, which is really good value. But if you buy the cans on their own they're actually quite expensive. A single can of Trip with 15mg of CBD will cost you £2.29 from Holland and Barrett.

Final thoughts

So although we really like the taste of the Trip CBD drinks and we think they're a really convenient way of getting a small amount of CBD into your system, we still think that consuming CBD oils or CBD gummies is a much more efficient and cost-effective way of consuming CBD.

take a trip cbd oil

Preparing to fly can raise the question of whether your trusty CBD oil can make the journey with you. One crucial fact stands out: The TSA permits carry-on and checked bags to contain hemp-derived CBD oil with a THC concentration not exceeding 0.3%.

This post is your guide, easing anxiety about flying with CBD by unveiling rules, providing must-know tips, and ensuring you’re ready for airport security. Stay tuned for clear skies ahead as we navigate air travel with CBD together.

Key Takeaways

  • You can bring CBD oil on a plane if it’s made from hemp and has less than 0.3% THC.
  • Always keep your CBD in its original packaging to show TSA agents what it is and avoid problems.
  • Check the laws about CBD for where you’re flying from, going to, and any places you might stop.
  • For international trips, look up the destination country’s rules on CBD because they can be very different.
  • Have papers like a Certificate of Analysis ready when traveling with CBD to prove it follows legal THC limits.

Understanding CBD Oil

A person holding a bottle of CBD oil in a natural setting.

CBD oil is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. It’s made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.

While derived from the same plant as marijuana, CBD does not contain THC , the psychoactive component that causes a “high.”.

Does CBD Oil Get You High?

CBD oil does not get you high . This is because it has very low levels of THC, the part of marijuana that causes high feelings. Most CBD oil comes from industrial hemp, which by law must have less than 0.3% THC .

So, when you use CBD oil for things like anxiety relief or to help with sleep, you shouldn’t worry about getting high.

There’s a difference between CBD and THC even though they come from the same plant family. While THC is known for its strong effects on your mind, CBD works in a calmer way and is mainly used for medical purposes .

The feeling after taking CBD should be more relaxed but not altered like with recreational marijuana products that contain higher amounts of THC. Always check how much THC is in any product before buying or traveling with it to make sure it meets legal rules.

TSA Guidelines for Traveling With CBD

A neatly packed travel bag with CBD products surrounded by TSA security equipment and diverse travelers.

The TSA says you can bring CBD products on a plane if they have less than 0.3% THC. These items must come from hemp plants, not marijuana. Always check the latest TSA rules before your trip to make sure you’re following them right.

If your CBD has more than 0.3% THC or comes from the usual cannabis plant, you can’t take it on a plane.

For your flight, keep your CBD in its original packaging so TSA agents can quickly see what it is. This helps avoid problems at security checks. Make sure your CBD oil is packed safely in your carry-on bag too! Now let’s talk about traveling with CBD within the USA and what laws apply there.

Traveling With CBD in the USA

When it comes to traveling with CBD in the USA, it’s important to be aware of federal level laws and regulations governing its transportation. Understanding these laws will help you navigate any potential issues when carrying CBD products during your travels.

Federal Level Laws

In the USA, federal law allows you to fly with CBD oil as long as it’s made from hemp and has less than 0.3% THC. This is good news if you use CBD for health reasons like easing stress or helping you stay asleep.

Just make sure your CBD comes from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant.

But keep in mind, even though federal laws let you bring this kind of CBD on planes, each state might have its own rules. Before you pack your bags, double-check the laws where you’re going and where you’ll land.

That way, you can enjoy your trip without any legal worries about your CBD oil.

Traveling With CBD in Europe

When traveling with CBD in Europe, it’s crucial to be aware of the varying regulations in different European countries. While some European countries have more lenient laws regarding CBD and cannabis products, others maintain strict restrictions.

For instance, some countries may allow CBD products that contain up to 0.2% THC, while others strictly prohibit any THC content in CBD products. Additionally, certain forms of CBD products, such as edibles like gummies or candies, might not be permissible for travel in specific European countries.

Before embarking on your trip with CBD oil or related products, research the legal status of CBD in each destination country within Europe. This helps ensure compliance with local laws and prevents any potential issues at customs or security checkpoints.

Remember to check for updated regulations before traveling as laws can vary and change across different European nations.

Traveling With CBD Internationally

When traveling internationally with CBD, it’s crucial to thoroughly research the legal regulations of the destination country. Many countries have strict laws regarding CBD and THC content, and some may not differentiate between hemp-derived and marijuana-derived CBD products.

Additionally, certain forms of CBD, such as edibles or those with higher THC levels, might be prohibited in some countries. It’s important to note that even if a country has legalized cannabis for medical or recreational use, bringing CBD oil from another location could still result in legal issues.

Before embarking on any international trip with CBD products, always verify the specific regulations of the destination country to avoid potential complications.

Remember that TSA guidelines apply only to domestic flights within the USA; they do not govern international air travel. Ensure compliance with both TSA rules and the laws of the destination country when carrying CBD across borders.

Additionally, having clear documentation such as a Certificate of Analysis can be beneficial for demonstrating compliance with legal THC limits while traveling internationally. Always exercise caution and diligence when considering whether to bring CBD products on an international journey due to varying global regulations.

Understanding THC Content and Documentation Requirements

When traveling with CBD, it’s important to understand the THC content and documentation requirements. Ensure that the THC levels in your CBD products are within legal limits for the country you’re visiting and have any necessary documentation on hand to avoid any issues during travel.

Low Levels of THC for Traveling

When traveling with CBD, it’s crucial to ensure that the products contain low levels of THC, ideally less than 0.3%. This is in line with TSA guidelines for air travel and helps you comply with federal laws in the USA.

Checking the THC content before traveling is essential to avoid any legal issues and to ensure a smooth journey without any complications at airport security checkpoints.

Remember, different countries have varying regulations regarding THC content in CBD products, so it’s important to research and understand these rules before embarking on international travel.

Documentation Requirements

When traveling with CBD, it’s important to have the necessary documentation to comply with regulations. Here are the key documentation requirements you need to consider:

  • Proof of CBD Content: Carry a certificate of analysis from the manufacturer showing the CBD content and THC level of the product.
  • Prescription or Recommendation: If traveling with medical CBD, have a doctor’s prescription or recommendation for the product.
  • Legal Status Documentation: Research and bring along documentation proving that CBD is legal in your departure and arrival locations.
  • Lab Test Results: Keep lab test results handy to verify the THC content if asked by authorities.
  • Product Origin Confirmation: Have proof that your CBD product is hemp-derived and contains less than 0.3% THC according to federal regulations.
  • Purchase Receipts: Retain purchase receipts or invoices as proof of where and when you bought the CBD product.
  • Packaging Details: Ensure the original packaging displays all relevant information about the product’s ingredients and THC levels.

Tips for Traveling with CBD: Packaging and Origin

When traveling with CBD, it’s important to consider how you package the product . Make sure the packaging is secure and meets TSA guidelines to avoid any issues at security checkpoints.

Keeping the original product packaging can also be helpful in demonstrating the legitimacy of your CBD oil while traveling.

Packaging Considerations

When traveling with CBD oil, proper packaging is crucial. Here are some important packaging considerations to keep in mind:

  • Ensure that the CBD oil is in a leak – proof container to prevent any spillage during travel.
  • Use opaque containers to protect the CBD oil from light exposure, which can degrade its quality over time.
  • Check the size of the container to comply with TSA guidelines for carry – on liquids.
  • Label the packaging clearly with information about the product and its THC content to assist security checks.
  • Consider using child – resistant packaging, especially if traveling with CBD gummies or other edible products.
  • Keep all CBD products in their original packaging to clearly display ingredients and prevent misunderstandings during security screenings.
  • Research specific airline regulations regarding carrying CBD products on board for additional guidance.
  • Be mindful of temperature fluctuations during travel and choose packaging that can withstand varying conditions to maintain product integrity.
  • Pack any related documentation, such as a certificate of analysis or a doctor’s prescription, alongside the CBD products for verification if needed at security checkpoints.
  • When purchasing CBD oil specifically for travel, opt for travel-sized bottles that meet TSA requirements and minimize space in your carry-on bag.

Importance of Original Packaging

When it comes to traveling with CBD oil, the original packaging is vital. It serves as proof of the product’s ingredients and THC content, meeting TSA guidelines. Additionally, keeping CBD oil in its original packaging ensures that you’re compliant with legal requirements and helps prevent any confusion during security checks.

Furthermore, the original packaging provides essential information about the product’s origin and its legitimacy. It also includes details such as batch numbers and manufacturing dates for transparency and authenticity.

Properly packaged CBD oil not only safeguards your travel plans but also gives you peace of mind regarding its quality and legality.

Before you pack your CBD oil for a trip, make sure it contains less than 0.3% THC and is hemp-derived. Check the TSA guidelines to ensure compliance with their rules before traveling with CBD products.

Remember that international travel with CBD might not be advisable, so always research the laws of your destination. Understanding the THC content and proper documentation will help you navigate airport security smoothly.

Packaging your CBD properly and keeping it in its original packaging is key for hassle-free travel.

1. Can I bring CBD oil on a plane with me?

Yes, you can usually take CBD oil in your carry-on bags when flying if it has less than 0.3% THC and meets regulations set by the Transportation Security Administration.

2. Are there different rules for medical cannabis compared to CBD oil?

The rules can be stricter for medical marijuana which contains higher levels of THC like delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or delta 8 THC, so always check the legal restrictions before traveling.

3. What should I have with me if I’m traveling with medical cannabis?

If you’re carrying legalized medical cannabis, make sure to have your tax receipt or any other proof that it is for medical use to avoid problems during security checks.

4. Will all airlines let me fly with CBD products?

While many airlines allow CBD oils and edibles from hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) that follow Food and Drug Administration guidelines, check with your specific airline about their rules regarding travel restrictions on these items.

5. Does taking edible cannabis on a plane cause any safety concerns?

As long as edible cannabis follows the same travel regulations and does not affect aviation safety by impairing passengers; they are generally allowed but stay informed on addiction warnings or drug treatments related to these products.

Traveling with CBD: Everything You Need to Know

Air travel can be anxiety-provoking, more so if you’re traveling with CBD. These TSA-approved tips tell you how to fly with CBD and less stress.

Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, the same question is on a lot of people’s minds: can you fly with cannabidiol (CBD) oil ? After all, cannabis has received special notoriety in the past decade as more and more states move to legalize the plant for recreational and medicinal use.

Anyone who flies regularly knows all too well the hassle of having to pack a bag according to airline regulations, followed by the uneasy security experience. When it comes to traveling with CBD, a substance that many people consider a non-negotiable part of their wellness routine, the rules seem even more unclear.

So, can you travel with CBD? Ahead, learn the official word on flying with CBD, the benefits of hemp medicine for flight anxiety, and what you can do to get through security confidently if your carry-on includes CBD.

Can You Fly With CBD?

The short answer – it depends. Thanks to the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived CBD is legal under federal law. That means you can grow, sell, buy, and consume CBD without having to worry about any legal consequences (on a federal level). Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not included on the federally-mandated list of controlled substances.

The only kicker with CBD is that it has to have less than 0.3% THC content. This small amount could be left behind after extraction, but it’s not enough to produce psychoactive “high” effects. Of the three types of CBD , isolate and broad-spectrum contain zero THC, while full-spectrum CBD has some THC.

CBD is typically extracted from hemp, a plant from the same family as marijuana, but without a high concentration of THC. In other words, hemp and medical marijuana both come from cannabis, but they each have varying levels of cannabinoids (therapeutic compounds).

Technically, flying with CBD is legal in the eyes of the federal government, but then again, individual states get the final say-so. Things get a bit trickier if you’re crossing state lines.

States Where CBD Is Illegal

If you travel with CBD products in or out of Idaho , South Dakota , or Nebraska , you’d be wise to leave your CBD at home. As of now, these three states have set rules against (or unclear technicalities around) the possession of recreational hemp.

States Where CBD Oil is Illegal

This is subject to change as states approve new laws in the future.

But what about prescribed cannabis? Currently, only one FDA-approved CBD product qualifies under a medical exemption. For those managing epilepsy with Epidiolex, you can legally pack it on your carry-on and travel across state lines, according to TSA regulations .

If you’re bringing CBD for other medical conditions, many states have yet to specify what is and isn’t legal for medicinal CBD patients using products sourced from marijuana. To be safe, you may want to research specific state legislation regarding CBD before your flight.

TSA Guidelines: Is it Legal to Fly with CBD?

Circling back to the question of hemp-sourced CBD products, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) follows the guidelines outlined by the 2018 Farm Bill. They permit “[CBD] products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the FDA.”

In other words, you can legally bring hemp-derived CBD into an airport and onto a plane without arousing federal suspicion. Contrary to public opinion, TSA officers are not actively looking to zero in on people traveling with cannabis. The screening procedures are there to detect potential safety threats—and, fortunately, cannabis doesn’t fall under that category.

However (and this is a major downside), if the TSA does find your stash, you could be subject to local/state drug laws. If you’re wondering how a TSA officer distinguishes between CBD and THC, well, it’s not a straight answer. Ultimately, it’s up to the TSA officer to decide. To stay on the safe side, you can prepare your CBD in a way that’s 100% transparent (more on this later).

Can I take CBD Oil on International Flights?

Similar to the United States, many government agencies, such as the European Union, give a pass on CBD products as long as they contain little to no trace of THC.

However, cannabis laws vary between countries and should be researched upon international travel. From there, individual countries have the right to make their own legislation.

But worldwide, there’s no set of standardized laws on CBD, which makes it hard to say one way or another. To err on the side of caution and avoid losing time going through security, consider picking up your CBD when you land. You can always use CBD before heading to the airport if you’re anxious about a long flight.

If you’re wondering what countries have legalized CBD and where CBD oils remain illegal, you can check out our in-depth guide here .

Where Can You Travel with CBD Oil

Benefits of CBD for Air Travel

Flight phobia, or the fear of flying, is not something to brush off as being “in your head.” This condition is a documented anxiety disorder in the DSM-5, involving anticipatory anxiety days or weeks before a flight and extremely negative mental images about potential disasters.

Depending on the severity of your anxiety, CBD may help soothe pre-flight panic and nervousness. Despite the lag in federal and state legislation, pre-clinical and analytical research reveals the promising benefits of CBD:

To Relieve Anxiety

In a 2019 double-blind study, researchers set out to determine the effect of using 300mg CBD as exposure therapy for patients with social anxiety and panic disorder associated with agoraphobia. As the first clinical trial to test the effectiveness of CBD for phobic patients, the findings could help thousands of future fliers dealing with pre-flight anxiety.

Preclinical evidence has already confirmed the anxiety-reducing effects of CBD on the stress response, so for people with flight phobia, CBD could ward off heart-racing fits of anxiety before takeoff.

To Promote Better Sleep

Animal studies and small controlled trials have shown that CBD increases sleepiness , which may be good news for fliers who have trouble dozing off on airplanes. However, the same study suggests that products with both CBD and THC may make you more alert than sleepy.

You can experiment with this before your flight to find the formula that helps you nod off to sleep. But since you can’t legally bring THC on the plane, CBD is a suitable and legal sleep aid. Furthermore, CBD sleep products are sometimes made using other all-natural ingredients that help promote sleep.

You may also travel with CBD oil in order to avoid jet lag.

Featured Product: CBD Oil for Sleep

If you’re looking to catch some sleep on your next flight, you’ll likely prefer a CBD product formulated for such. Green Roads’ Sweet Sleep CBD Oil is made using 25mg of CBD and cannabinol (CBN) per dose along with 2.5mg of melatonin.

To Provide Pain Relief

In self-reported survey results published by the Journal of Pain Research , more than half of the 253 participants said that CBD products improved their back, neck, and nerve pain. Based on this anecdotal evidence, you may find relief while sitting in constrained, uncomfortable positions on an airplane with CBD.

FOCL Deep Relief

Featured Product: CBD Cream for Pain

When it comes to flying, many of us struggle with aches and pains once the flight is over. If this is a common occurrence, you’ll likely want to give FOCL’s Deep Relief Cream a try. This topical is infused with menthol, eucalyptus, and wintergreen oil to provide a cooling effect along with camphor oil and premium CBD to ease muscle and joint pains.

Travel-Friendly Types of CBD

The same rules for liquids apply to CBD. If you’re bringing tinctures in your carry-on, make sure they’re less than 3.4 oz. Travel-sized shouldn’t be that much of a hurdle with CBD products, which generally already come packaged in small containers.

If you’re wondering if it’s better to bring edibles, tinctures, joints/flower, sprays, vapes, or topicals, here’s the deal: pack smart and plan for the worst-case scenario. To avoid an awkward TSA encounter, keep your CBD in its original packaging. You can also bring a copy of the product’s certificate of analysis (CoA) as a secondary precaution measure. This way, if you do run into a problem, you’ll have the proper paperwork to prove your CBD complies with the less than 0.3% THC rule.

Can you take CBD oil on a plane?

Technically, yes. But we would recommend doing so with caution. Furthermore, since CBD oil is a liquid, it’s important your product stays within the legal fluid limits.

Can you take CBD cream on a plane?

Again, you technically can, but you’ll want to be careful. Also, you’ll want to ensure your CBD cream is in a travel-size container.

Tips for Overcoming Stress at Security

For some people, airports are an exciting stepping stone to the next adventure. Assuming that everything goes according to plan, flying can be a thrill. But, like most things in life, plans change unexpectedly.

You might hit traffic on the way to the airport, misplace your travel documents, lose non-TSA compliant valuables at security, or worse, miss your flight due to unforeseen circumstances.

There are a million possibilities, but to ensure you get from point A to B, read over this list of expert flier tips (especially if you’re traveling with CBD):

  • Pack and organize before you go : Last-minute packing – just don’t do it. Keep your stress levels in check by gathering all of your belongings the night before you fly.
  • Research domestic/international CBD laws : This bit of research will save you time and money. If it’s illegal where you’re going, you won’t run the risk of TSA officers throwing your CBD in the trash. But if it is legal, you’ll need time to print the product’s CoA before your flight.
  • Breathe, the TSA isn’t the police : Even though they’re in uniform, TSA officers aren’t there to arrest you for a little CBD. Move swiftly and confidently through security and you should be fine.
  • Don’t go out of your way to hide your stash : Not only will this increase anxiety if your bag gets pulled, but it sends a signal to TSA officers that you have something to hide. If you have CBD gummies , stow them in a quart-sized baggie with your other food items. For tinctures, keep them in a sealed bag with your cosmetics. Vape oil and batteries are only allowed in your carry-on bag, preferably in a separate, sealed bag. Transparency is best, so remember to keep everything in its original packaging.

Traveling with CBD Oil

You can probably get away with flying with CBD, depending on the airport, the state you’re flying to, and the TSA officer on duty. Because CBD is federally legal, airport guidelines have recognized the changing legal situation and made updates accordingly.

CBD may provide relief for anxious flyers, but if you’re worried about losing your CBD at security, plan on dosing before you arrive at the airport. If it’s legal at your next destination, pick up what you need there to avoid unnecessary hassle at security.

Frequently Asked Questions

Since TSA isn’t looking for cannabis, it’s safe to say they won’t perform a cannabinoid test at security. However, they may pass the situation off to a law enforcement officer. You can field questions about your CBD by keeping it in its original packaging with a printed copy of the certificate of analysis. To state the obvious, don’t bring products with the cannabis universal symbol (marijuana leaf and exclamation point).

It’s better to seal your CBD with other liquids and valuables. If it’s accessible, you’re less likely to get dinged by the airport baggage scanner.

Depending on the type of CBD you use, it could take 5 minutes to two hours to feel the effects. Gummies and tinctures are less bioavailable than vapes. If you need instant relief, smoke before you step into the airport. But you may want to time your dosage with takeoff, so an edible or tincture would work better in this scenario. In such cases, consume between 30 minutes to an hour before arriving at the airport.

Wondering how to take CBD oil?

In this quick guide, we’ll explain the four main ways to take CBD oil and what the best dosage is depending on your needs.

Our goal is to provide the most accurate information about CBD and do all the high quality research so you don’t have to. Read more here .

Now let’s dive in!

How to Take CBD Oil: 4 Methods

When it comes to consuming CBD oil, there are four main methods:

  • Inhaling it by smoking or vaping it.
  • Applying it to your skin topically.
  • Taking it under the tongue (sublingual).
  • Ingesting it using edibles.

We’ll break down each of these for you!

1. Inhalation (Smoking/Vaping)

Inhaling CBD oil is one of the fastest ways to feel its effects since it goes straight into your lungs and bloodstream. There are two ways to inhale CBD: smoking and vaping. We’ll discuss each.

Smoking CBD Oil

You can smoke cannabidiol concentrate using an “oil rig” (see below), which is similar to a water pipe. It works by heating the “nail” (the chamber where you place the CBD oil concentrate), then putting the oil into the nail with a dabber (a small metal tool used to transfer the oil concentrate from its container to the oil rig). This produces smoke, which you inhale.

Alternatively, you can smoke it by rolling a joint out of high CBD marijuana. However, this method means you’ll also be consuming some THC, which would have a psychoactive effect.  Click here to learn the differences between THC vs CBD.

Pros of Smoking CBD Oil

  • The highest concentration of CBD oil and the fastest way to consume it.
  • Easily manage how much you consume.

Cons of Smoking CBD Oil

  • Smoking can be harsh on the throat and lungs.
  • High concentration can be more than some people want.
  • Requires additional tools (like an oil rig, dabber, and/or joint paper).

Vaping CBD Oil

You can vape CBD oil with a vaporizer pen. If you’re new to vaping, a vape starter kit (image below) can be a great way to start out.

Vaping is a great alternative to smoking if you still want the maximum possible effect, but without the harsh feel of smoke (like medical marijuana) in your throat and lungs.

Pros of Vaping

  • High concentration means maximum possible effects.
  • No harsh smoke to aggravate your throat and lungs.
  • Easily control your dosage amounts.

Cons of Vaping

  • The high concentration may be more than you want to feel.
  • Requires extra purchases (CBD vape pen and accessories).

2. Topical Application/Balms

The next way to use CBD oil is through topical application — meaning, you place it on your skin in the form of a balm, lotion, or ointment.

This method is probably the easiest as it doesn’t require any special tools or knowledge to use. Simply figure out the dosage you want (we’ll help you with that in the next section), then apply that amount of balm to your skin.

This method is best for sore muscles, migraines, and  skin conditions like acne . You can apply the balm directly to any sore areas, such as a sore neck, back, or feet. You can also apply it to your temples to help relieve migraines!

Here’s a neat video explaining 10 ways to apply CBD topicals:

Pros of Topical Application

  • Easy to use.
  • No extra tools or accessories required.
  • Great for sore muscles and chronic pain.
  • Has the mildest effects of all the consumption methods.

Cons of Topical Application

  • Has the mildest effects of all the consumption methods (you might require more CBD).
  • While the effects happen quickly, they don’t last as long in comparison to other methods.

3. Sublingual (Under the Tongue)

You can purchase CBD oil tinctures — little bottles that look like eye drops (see below) — to take your cannabidiol sublingually (under your tongue).

Simply apply a few drops under your tongue from the dropper, hold it in your mouth for ~30 seconds, then swallow! This method is discreet, effective, and gives you feelings of calm and well-being. It’s believed that pure hemp oil concentrates are a good way to add a large number of cannabinoids to your daily routine — more the merrier.

Pros of Sublingual Consumption

  • Easy to use and requires no extra tools or accessories.
  • Discreet — you can use them in public easily without drawing attention.
  • It’s easy to control how much you use.
  • Long-lasting effects when taken this way.

Cons of Sublingual Consumption

  • Results may vary from person to person.
  • Oil takes longer to have an effect than the previous two methods.
  • Some CBD tinctures contain alcohol — if you’re trying to avoid this, look for oils made with vegetable glycerin.

4. Ingestion/Edibles

Last but not least we have edibles! Adding CBD oil to your food is a fun and easy way to take your CBD. Unlike THC edibles, which are known to be too potent for some, CBD edibles (such as CBD gummy bears or lollipops) won’t cause any kind of psychoactive effects. It’s commonplace to get CBD edibles in full-spectrum form, however you can also get CBD isolate in your gummies.

Aside from purchasing pre-made CBD-infused foods, you can also make your own CBD edibles, such as CBD-infused butter or pasta. Just be aware of how much oil you put in your food.

Note: Be careful about how much you eat! Effects from edibles can take 2-4 hours to kick in, so people often eat too much. It’s always better to wait a few hours and see how you feel before eating any more.

Pros of Edibles

  • Longest-lasting results of all CBD consumption methods.
  • Practically endless options of how to create (and eat) CBD edibles.
  • Also very discreet — you’re just eating something!

Cons of Edibles

  • Can take up to 4 hours for effects to kick in.
  • Getting the right dose can be tricky and takes some experimentation.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Take? – Dosage Information

CBD oil dosages are hard to calculate, especially when it’s your first time. The reason being, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn’t established formal nutritional guidelines or health benefits for CBD products.

There is no Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for CBD oil yet. While many companies have serving suggestions on their products, these were created by the company, not by official research or standard guidelines.

So how much CBD oil should you take?

The answer depends on why you’re taking it, your weight, and the strength of your CBD oil. Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different, so dosage will vary. That’s to say, that some will find relief with 5mg twice a day, while others are closer to 100mg four times a day and higher!

Note:  We’re not doctors and can’t give you any legal or medical advice. Please consult your doctor before making any changes to your supplement intake.

Depending on if you’re taking  CBD oil for pain , anxiety, seizures, cancer, or another reason, you’ll want more or less CBD.

While it’s difficult to give you exact CBD dosage and serving size recommendations because the effects vary from person to person, we recommend using this dosage calculator to help you find your ideal dosage amounts. ( 1 )

Once you’ve got your RDI, start with the minimum recommended dose from the CBD calculator. If you feel that isn’t enough for you, slowly up the dose of mg of CBD until you feel comfortable with the results.

“Start low and go slow” is the motto you should follow!

Warning:  It IS possible to take too much CBD oil. While you cannot  fatally  overdose on CBD and there are very few negative side effects, too much has been shown to cause drowsiness, lethargy, upset stomach, temporary drop in blood pressure, nausea and diarrhea. The exact amounts that lead to these side effects of CBD are unknown, which is why you should start with small amounts and slowly increase the dose over time until you experience your desired result. You’re Ready!

Now you know how to take CBD oil! It can be inhaled, topically applied, taken under the tongue, or consumed as edibles.

Buying Guide

When choosing the best CBD hemp oil drops, there are several factors to consider. Here are some features to look for when selecting a product:

Extraction Method

Where the CBD oil is sourced from, as well as the extraction process that was adopted is another factor of consideration. Note that the highest quality oils must go through CO2 extraction, which is acknowledged to be the safest and most efficient. Some other procedures for example solvent extraction yields a product with the solvent stuck in it that is very unhealthy.

CBD Concentration

That is why it is necessary to focus on the concentration of CBD in the oil as well as on the quality of the oil. The best products for the nervous system should have written information of how much CBD is contained in a single dose and how many milligrams of CBD are in the bottle. This information will assist you in deducing how strong the product is and how much of the product you will require for good results.

Third-Party Testing

The use of third-party testing procedures is a criticality to consider when selecting the CBD hemp oil products. Anthocyanin concentration is important hence it’s advised that one looks for products that have been monitored by an independent laboratory and that contain a certificate of analysis. This will help to make certain that the product has the right proportions of CBD and that it has no contaminant.

Carrier Oil

The carrier oil employed in comprising the forming base of the product also plays a part in determining its efficacy. Choose products derived from reliable carrier oils for example MCT oil or hemp seed oil. These oils can readily be assimilated into the body and this makes them to improve on the uptake of the CBD.

Additional Ingredients

It is important to note that some CBD hemp oil products may include other extracts such as terpenes, or essential oils that help boost up the impacts of the CBD. Avoid products which have been processed and opt for natural products that do not have a list of additives or preservatives on the label.

By considering these factors, you can choose the best CBD hemp oil drops for your needs. Remember to always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.

Best cbd oil for pain: 5 cbd oils to support health & pain management.

Jessica Braun Gervais

CBD boasts plenty of potential benefits: better sleep, less stress, and even a better mood.* But one of the main reasons people take the cannabinoid is pain relief.

While we’re still in the early stages of exploring the full benefits of hemp CBD—and how it interacts with our body— research 1 consistently shows potential for CBD as a way to reduce aches and discomfort, especially for those struggling to manage pain.

  • Best overall CBD oil for daily use: Medterra Daily Relief Oil Tincture
  • Best organic CBD oil: Cornbread Whole Flower USDA Organic Hemp Oil
  • Most potent CBD oil: CBDfx CBD + CBG Oil Wellness Tincture 1000-6000 mg
  • Best value CBD oil: R&R Fresh Mint CBD Tinctures
  • Best tasting CBD oil: BATCH Original CBD Oil Tincture

What is CBD?

You’ve probably seen the words CBD and hemp used interchangeably, but it’s important to remember there’s a difference between the two.

CBD or cannabidiol is extracted from hemp, which was legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill. Per this law, hemp must contain less than 0.3% THC by dry weight.

Along with CBD, hemp contains flavonoids, terpenes, and hundreds of other phytocannabinoids that help the plant to thrive. These other phytocannabinoids are often paired together with CBD in products due to the entourage effect , which assumes these plant compounds work better when taken together.

When you shop for CBD, you’ll likely see the option for full-spectrum hemp, broad-spectrum hemp, or CBD isolate.

  • Full-spectrum hemp CBD retains all components of the plant (and is often believed to be the most effective version), including the aforementioned terpenes, flavonoids, cannabinoid, and small amounts of THC.
  • Broad-spectrum hemp CBD is filtered to contain no THC but still retains the other compounds of the hemp plant.
  • CBD isolate is only the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD). No THC is a pro for many but it’s worth flagging you won’t get the perks of the entourage effect.

How CBD interacts with the body

CBD oils interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system plays a large role in homeostasis, which impacts various functions like sleep, pain, and mood.

This lock-and-key-system is made up of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. While our body makes its own endocannabinoids, they can also be introduced from outside sources—like hemp.

While we don’t pay much attention to the ECS in a typical science class, this system plays a major role in our health due to its regulatory role. The health of your ECS, or endocannabinoid tone 2 , can heavily impact how your body feels.

In fact, some experts theorize a cannabinoid deficiency 3 could be responsible for many health issues without easy-to-find root causes.

"The most common contributors to ECS deficiency are the usual suspects when it comes to poor health," Jessica Knox, M.D., MPH , co-founder of the American Cannabinoid Clinics and a preventive medicine physician previously told mindbodygreen .

"Unhealthy diet and nutritional deficiency, environmental toxins and chemical pollutants, mental and emotional stress, and the ways these factors interplay with the typical aging process," she adds.

When you take CBD, it acts like a daily multivitamin for your ECS. As a result, it has the potential to impact every function regulated by the endocannabinoid system.

The potential benefits of CBD

CBD is one of the most studied cannabinoids—but we’re still in the early stages of fully understanding its value. Here’s what we do know:

  • Pain management: CBD interacts with receptors in the ECS that manage pain 4 . Taking CBD may help relieve aches and discomfort.
  • Stress relief: CBD may also help relieve stress 5 and occasional bouts of anxiety. Research suggests this is because CBD attaches to serotonin receptors in a way that improves your mood. In fact, a 2019 study found that rats who had taken CBD had higher levels of BDNF, which is a chemical that helps to manage feelings of depression.
  • Improved sleep : A 2019 study 6 shows that CBD may help promote better sleep by interacting with our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) in a way that signals us to relax and calm down.

How to find the best CBD oils

If you're incorporating CBD into your pain management plan, there are a few things you want to consider to ensure you're using the best CBD.

If you're using CBD for pain relief, you want to consider the type of CBD product you're using. As mentioned, you can opt for full-spectrum or broad-spectrum hemp to take advantage of the entourage effect—or opt for CBD isolate if you want to avoid THC.

Some people also find that using topicals can be more beneficial for pain because you can apply CBD directly to your area of discomfort. Research suggests this is because there are cannabinoid receptors in your skin 7 .

Hemp has an earthy, natural flavor that can be off-putting to some people. If the flavor of something matters to you, look for flavored CBD products. These flavors can mask or complement hemp's natural taste, making it more appealing to take.

Potency refers to the strength of the CBD product. The higher the potency, the more intense the pain it can ease. People with mild pain find lower-potency products (around 500mg per bottle) to provide the relief they need.

People who experience intense aches and discomfort tend to use higher-potency products (1000mg or more per bottle) to assist in their pain management. Always talk to your doctor before adding CBD to your routine.

Intended benefit

CBD is meant for overall wellness and can help balance the body in many ways. However, some products have additional active ingredients to further support pain management. Look for a products catered to your desired needs.

Other types of CBD products

CBD oils aren't for everyone. If you want to experience the benefits of CBD but don't enjoy oils, consider a different form of CBD, such as topicals, edibles, or drinks.

Topical CBD

Topical CBD is anything you rub into the skin, such as lotions and gels. These products are typically used in pain management because they allow targeted pain management.

Topical products are also popular among athletes and active individuals as a recovery tactic to ease muscle soreness after workouts.

CBD edibles

CBD edibles are any type of CBD product that you eat. Many people enjoy edibles because they're discreet and easy to travel with, so you can take them on the go.

People also like that each edible contains a pre-measured amount of CBD, so you know how much CBD you get with each bite. They're also a great option if you're taste-sensitive and don't enjoy hemp’s' natural, earthy flavor.

CBD drinks are growing in popularity as an alcohol alternative. You can think of a CBD drink as an infused soda or water with a premeasured amount of CBD per can. Many people find them refreshing and primarily use them to relax and unwind, but they're not the best CBD for pain relief.

CBD capsules

If you like the idea of a convenient, premeasured CBD product that you can take on the go but don't necessarily like edibles, you can try a CBD capsule, soft gel, or pill. You take them with water like you would any other pill, and they're easy to build into a morning or night routine.

Potential side effects of CBD

Not everyone tolerates CBD oils well, whic sometimes leads to unwanted side effects 8 . As registered RDN and certified holistic cannabis practitioner Emily Kyle, M.S., previously told mindbodygreen , the potential side effects of CBD are mild. These include:

  • Some digestive issues, like loose stool

If you experience adverse side effects, discontinue CBD use and visit a doctor.

Is CBD legal?

CBD became federally legal due to the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (aka the Farm Bill ), which removed hemp-derived CBD from the controlled substances list. While CBD is legal at the federal level, some states restrict its sale, use, and purchase. Before buying or using CBD, check your local legislation to ensure it's legal in your state.

How many CBD gummies should I take?

How many CBD gummies you take will depend on your needs and tolerance, as well as the potency of the gummy. Experts recommend starting low and slow increasing your CBD intake.

How fast do CBD gummies work?

Most people start to feel the results of CBD gummies 30 minutes to an hour after consumption. This timeframe can vary depending on the product's potency and your metabolism.

Is CBD safe?

While CBD is considered relatively safe, you should always consult with a healthcare professional before taking.

The takeaway

As CBD grows in popularity, it's looking to be a viable option to reduce various types of pain, including chronic pain, sore muscles, and joint pain. In addition to helping manage pain, CBD may also improve sleep, stress, and mobility. However, it's important to remember that CBD is not a replacement for professional medical treatment, especially for those living with chronic pain.
