Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons Review

  • on July 18, 2022

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons are fast and long, but they don’t give up anything in terms of shot shaping and stopping power.  Great, solid feel.

Check out the new Tour Edge Exotics C723 irons HERE

Introduction

Last year, Tour Edge Exotics dropped the category-busting C721 irons [review HERE ].  Call them players irons, call them distance irons, call them game improvement – either way you’re right and wrong.  For 2022, TEE had the unenviable task of trying to improve on that.  I tested the C722 irons to see if they could.

Check out the new Tour Edge Exotics C722 Ti-Utility Iron HERE

tour edge c722 irons graphite

In the bag, the Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons look very similar to the C721.  The “cavity” portion has been reshaped and given a different visual texture, but the rest remains the same.  A Tour Edge Exotics logo sits in the toe just above the C722 designation.  Opposite the TEE logo is a call out to the Vibrcor technology.

tour edge c722 irons graphite

At address, the top line of the C722 is thinner than the C721 .  There also appears to be less offset .  This pushes the C722 away from the game improvement category, at least visually.  The blade length isn’t oversized, but it’s not compact either.

Compared to its line mate, the E722 [review HERE ], the C722 irons have much thinner top lines and much less offset.

Sound & Feel

Tour Edge Exotics has put a tremendous focus on sound and feel in the last few years, and that shows in the C722 irons.  Despite being a hollow body iron, the C722 is extremely solid .  It feels like you’re delivering a gut-punch to the golf ball, knocking the wind out of it.  This strong feel is paired with a quiet “thud” – easily the quietest impact sound of any hollow iron I can think of .

TEE’s Dual VIBRCOR Technology enhances the feel without robbing the C722 of feedback.  As you move away from the center of the face, the sound gets a little louder and transitions from “thud” to “snap.”  There is also some feedback through the hands, but it’s subtle.

Performance

Tour Edge Exotics calls the C722 an “ultra premium player’s distance iron.”  Like so many categories, “player’s distance” is ill-defined, but I’d suggest we start using the C722 as the benchmark.  This is a true players iron in terms of launch, spin, and shot control but it also manages to be impressively long and forgiving.

tour edge c722 irons graphite

To start my launch monitor testing, I ran the Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons against my gamer PING Blueprints [review HERE ].  This isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison by any means, but I wanted to see how much of the “players-ness” the C722 gave up in the name of distance.  The answer: none.  From the long irons through the scoring irons, the launch and spin numbers from the two sets were virtually identical .  This is particularly hard to believe given that there’s as much as a four degree difference in loft, but it’s true.

There are several reasons why it’s so important – and impressive – that TEE kept the spin in these irons.  Most obviously, spin is a big part of what keeps an approach shot on the green .  No one wants to see an iron shot land pin high, then bounce and run over the back.  Additionally, spin is what allows players to shape shots .  For an iron to carry the “players” moniker, I think that should always be an option.

tour edge c722 irons graphite

Where the C722 and Blueprint diverged was on ball speed, and diverge they did.  Thanks to the Diamond Face VFT and Maraging Steel L-Cup Face, the C722 has ball speed on par with the fastest irons available .  In the long irons, the smash factors easily climb into the high 1.4s.  The C722 irons left the Blueprints in the dust with enhanced ball speed translating to at least an extra club of distance .

Finally, the other massive advantage of the C722 irons is consistency.  With their hollow body design and strong perimeter weighting, the C722s deliver predictable launch, spin, and speed shot after shot.  This means that whether you’re striking it like a true player or having an off day, you can rely on repeatable distances from your irons.

tour edge c722 irons graphite

The Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons truly deliver on both sides of the “player’s distance” promise.  These irons have all the spin you need to shape your shots and stick the landing on the green.  That’s paired with tremendous ball speed and enough forgiveness to get you through some bad swings.  The C722 irons show that you can get the best of both worlds.

Great review and thanks! I am guessing these fall in the same category as P790s, Ping I525, T200s and other players distance. Pricing seems attractive relative to the other brands as does stock shaft offerings. You have tempted me!

' src=

Have not played those irons but Made in THE U. S. A. Good thing !

' src=

I believe they are built in the USA but some components are not made in the USA.

' src=

Hi Matt! I’ve been anticipating this review. Did you experience a marked difference between these and the C721’s in terms of 4i/5i launch/spin and also overall performance and feel? The C722’s sound seemed more muted per your review. Finally, how did the C722 gap wedge stack up to your current gap wedge?

' src=

I would say the difference is measurable but probably not noticeable, for most golfers. The C722 GW is a lot faster than my Edison, but I prefer the smaller head and thinner sole.

' src=

Thanks Matt. Considering new irons soon. I am impressed with the 7 wood and 3 wood I added to my bag.

' src=

On my third set of tour edge irons started with geo bazooka back in 2011 now on EXS irons, this current set is great and I don’t intend changing for a few more year yet, the only issue I have with tour edge is they change there clubs all the time I brought the EXS 3 & 5 fairway woods with turf interaction soles but the latest model doesn’t have this this to me says that development was a gimmick if it wasn’t and it was a true game changer they’d still be using it David Glod is very good at blowing the trumpet for tour edge’s latest clubs when really the previous 2 models are just as good these new irons also have what appears to be stronger lofts which also helps with distance. But I still would change them for any other major brand, I just thing if you buy them be prepared for them to be out of date within a year or possibly less lol,

I think “out of date” is the wrong way to look at it. Any change in a club comes with pluses and minuses. Rail soles are good for turf interaction, but they limit the designer’s ability to move CG. I look at it as, “In year 1, they offered a club for players who need help with turf interaction. In year 2, they offered something for players who need higher CG.” There is no perfect club which is why we always emphasize the importance of fitting.

' src=

Hi Matt The triumph of these irons seems to be incorporating the longer shafts and stronger lofts without compromising spin and playability. Have you ever hit a comparably successful “player’s distance” iron?

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of another players distance iron with this much spin.

' src=

Matt, great review and these look like trying out. One thing you don’t mention that could be important for many-price! I was at Golf Galaxy today browsing irons. The Callaways (which I love), Titleists, et. al. run about $1,300, whereas the TEE C722 & E722’s were $700 & $800, or vice versa. The price of premium irons (along with many other things) have become outrageous.

' src=

Very good review. I love my Tour Edge C721 driver and fairway woods and was awaiting the review on these irons. When I hit the lottery these irons are one of the first things on my shopping list. Thanks again for an awesome review.

' src=

Matt, How do these compare to PXG 0211 DC? Tks Guy

I have a full review of the 2021 0211 irons here: https://pluggedingolf.com/2021-pxg-0211-irons-review/

Hi Matt. I’m waffleling between the C722 and the P790 My main concern is there is not a lot of shaft choices with the tour age. Currently I have been fitted into The dynamic gold 105 stiff Of the choices that Touredge offers what would be closer to the shaft I’ve been fitted to

I would suggest contacting Tour Edge to see if you can order them with the Dynamic Gold 105, or ordering them through a builder who will make them to your spec. A new iron set is a big enough investment that, in my opinion, stock shaft choice should not be the deciding factor.

' src=

Ultimate question. Since these have just as much spin as your Blueprints, but more forgiveness and more distance: will these be replacing the Blueprints in your bag?

Or are they not as workable, and shotmaking pleases you more than controlled distance?

High praise from you in any case.

No, I’m not looking to replace my irons at this time. I discussed why I change my clubs so infrequently here: https://pluggedingolf.com/podcast-episode-136-when-to-replace-your-clubs/ To this set specifically, I’m really not looking for more distance. I wish I could get the forgiveness without the added distance, but that’s rare, maybe impossible. Part of not wanting more distance is how infrequently I play and not wanting to learn new yardages.

Matt, Being a low spin player, looking for the highest spinning and/or descent angle iron to better hold greens. Do you have any comparison as to the higher spin in clubs you have reviewed? thanks,

If you need more spin and you don’t want to be in a blade/players cavity back, this is as high spin as I can think of.

' src=

Nice review! You hit it … the key to buying any set of irons is get fitted. If you’re going to spend your hard earned money it pays to get fitted!

' src=

Just replaced my entire bag of clubs, including the bag, as mine were stolen at tournament in Cincinnati. I’m 65 a 4 index, and finally made the move to graphite. Make sure to get fitted. My bag: 722C driver and 5-gap edge 722E 3 wood 16.5 and 4 hybrid 22 degree All in Blue Ventus Reg. Flex Big change for me in shafts….. Just got em report later.

"Our Favorite Exotics Iron to date"

"Packed with technology, the C722 is our favorite Exotics iron to date. It looks slick, feel smooth and produces the kinds of shots better players want on command. Trajectories are long and consistent and despite the added length, are still predictable and easy to control. Furthermore, the hollow-body design feels nothing like one. They still have a pillow-soft feel that better players crave."

Tour Edge C722 and E722 irons: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/FirstCut_TourEdgeIrons.jpg

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Tour Edge’s latest iron line appeals to different types of players. The C722 is for a more accomplished player and uses a hollow-body design and L-face to create speed while the E722 offers more help getting the ball in the air for those who need it.

AVAILABILITY/PRICE: Available March 5, the cost for the C722 irons is $141 per iron in steel and $161 per iron in graphite. The E722 is $111 per iron in steel and $126 per iron in graphite. The Ti-utility is vailable in right-hand only in lofts of 17, 19, 22 and 25 degrees and costs $200 per iron

THE DEEP DIVE: Tour Edge is a company that appeals to a wide swath of golfers and that heritage continues with the launch of its Exotics C722 and E722 irons with the former targeted at more of a competitive-minded player while the latter is aimed at the player in need of a little more help with their approach game.

Common to both is a variable-face thickness in which different-sized diamond shapes act as mini-trampolines to foster higher ball speeds across a wider portion of the face, including reduced thickness in the heel and toe areas to mitigate the loss of ball speed on off-center strikes. Both irons also feature a high-grade thermoplastic urethane the company calls VibRCore to help promote rebound while enhancing feel.

The Exotics E722 uses a single-piece high-strength stainless steel body with a 360-degree undercut design. That design helps lower the center of gravity to produce a high launch with increased face flex—something players in need of an assist will welcome. A new toe-weighting pocket moves plenty of weight out to that area to provide more stability and maintain more speed in an area where less-skilled players often strike their irons. Also adding to the distance equation are the stronger lofts with a pitching wedge that checks in at 42 degrees of loft.

The more competitive player will be looking at the Exotics C722, which has a shorter blade length, thinner topline and an overall more compact shape than the E722

MORE: The best clubfitters near you

The real hero of this iron is a L-face where the bottom of the face wraps around part of the sole to provide extra spring, particularly low on the face where most iron impacts occur. The face is made from a high-strength forged military-grade maraging steel used in aerospace, with applications including landing gear, helicopter undercarriages and rocket motor cases—all of which require a high strength-to-weight material. The face is plasma welded to the 17-4 stainless-steel body creating a hollow-body design where the face has room to flex.

“This type of face produces a very hot ball speed,” said Matt Neely, Tour Edge’s vice president of product development. “We didn’t have to go any thinner on the face as we were already up against the face thickness envelope, but the L-face design produce the kind of flex you need to achieve in a players-distance iron.”

A variety of shaft options are available in both steel and graphite. Cost for the C722 irons is $141 per iron in steel and $161 per iron in graphite. The E722 is $111 per iron in steel and $126 per iron in graphite.

For those seeking to replace their long irons with something a little easier to hit, the company also unveiled its C722 Ti-utility iron. The club features a more compact shape with a bit of offset. A titanium L-face is brazed to a 431 stainless-steel body. Doing so allows the face to be joined to the body without having to weld them together, thus saving weight. Th hollow-body design also allows plenty of room for the face to flex to enhance distance. An adjustable weight in the sole allows clubfitters to dial in the preferred weight. Available in right-hand only in lofts of 17, 19, 22 and 25 degrees, the Ti-utility costs $200 per iron.

Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons Review

Tour edge exotics c722 irons.

Designed for the player looking for maximum distance and added forgiveness in a “competitive spec” profile, the Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons check all the boxes. Packed with technologies such as Diamond Face VFT and dual VIBRCOR, the C722 irons have a snappy clean feel that’s easy to hit a long way. Their “player-preferred” shaping will make the C722 irons a great choice for the discerning golfer seeking a great combination of power and feel .

Looks 18

Though it won’t be mistaken for a classic butter knife blade, the Tour Edge C722 iron still has a traditional shape and a pretty compact profile. Tour Edge made the C722 15% smaller overall from its C721 predecessor and the blade length is shorter from heel to toe. For a player’s distance iron, the C722 has one of the thinner toplines you’ll come across , and the offset is minimal throughout most of the set. That said, the longer irons do show a little more offset, but that is by design to make the club more forgiving and easier to close at impact. The leading edge is straight but smooth which I personally found quite appealing to my eye. Overall, I found the C722 irons to look really clean behind the ball and I felt confident over any shot I faced.

Feel 14

How Does it Feel?

Two technologies factor heavily into the C722 irons’ feel – dual VIBRCOR and Diamond Face VFT. Tour Edge injected a TPU gel into the hollow head that combines with another thick, yet lightweight, layer of TPU to dampen the feel giving it a hot, yet solid feel. This is what makes up the “dual VIBRCOR” of the club. VIBRCOR also helps create perimeter weighting around the club head so it feels more balanced and the forgiveness is increased.

Diamond Face technology aids in the feel and forgiveness by making the club face more active and enlarging the sweet spot. There are 92 diamond shapes of varying sizes behind the club face that act as “mini trampolines” at impact. Shots off of the generous sweet spot are about as hot as any iron you’ll hit and mishits still have plenty of pop. Though a highly forgiving face, the response is precise so you are fully aware of where you’re making contact on each shot. If there’s one takeaway from this review, the C722 irons are some of the hottest feeling irons I’ve ever hit .

One last quick “feel” note in regards to turf interaction. The soles of the C722 irons aren’t exactly super thin, but they have a nice radius that cuts through the turf very cleanly. Normal shots were nice and crisp with a smooth “glide”. On heavier shots, I found the soles saved me more than once by keeping the club square and preventing me from digging too deep. Combine that with the generosity of the Diamond Face and the L-Cup, which acts as a hinge for more face flex, and you get away with a higher quality shot than you likely deserved on mishits. Trust me, I benefited from this on multiple occasions .

Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons 20

How Does it Sound?

VIBRCOR also contributes heavily to the Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons’ sound. The gel injected into the head essentially serves as a shock absorber so vibrations are minimized. A shot off the sweet spot has a tight “snap” to it that’s semi-muted. As you stray away from the sweet spot, the sound opens up a little and is more of a “whap” . Cleaner shots through the turf have a nice “whish” as the club slips through the grass.

Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons 3

On-Course Performance

Long distances and forgiveness while retaining the playability of a player’s iron is the whole goal of the Tour Edge C722 irons. Oh boy, let me tell you, they sure as hell do that! My first time out with these irons was one of those brutal early March Chicagoland rounds where you’re the only clown crazy enough to play 18 holes. 35+ mph gusts of wind, intermittent snow flurries, combinations of mud pools and frozen ground, and frigid temperatures. Managing the winds was no problem and I was able to effortlessly find plenty of much-needed distance. More importantly, damage from numerous mishits was minimal and I played unreasonably good golf considering the elements. Needless to say, the C722 irons more than had my attention.

My next round out with the C722 irons was in much more realistic and playable Spring conditions. It was this round where the distance and forgiveness really stood out to me. Admittedly, the lofting is about a half club strong, but my distances were a little over a club longer and it came with ease . Long, high draws were almost automatic, but I could just as easily flight the ball down and/or play a cut. Again, the forgiveness really stood out to me. With multiple instances of hitting the ball a bit high on the face, or a little too toey, and the ball still held its line and had pretty close to full yardage. Can’t ask for much more in a golf club of this style.

Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons 17

Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons

I would say that I’m rarely immediately taken aback testing golf equipment these days. Golf clubs in general have been really strong over the past decade and one might argue the marketing has been even better. However, with just two swings of the Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons, I stopped dead in my tracks with wide eyes and could only muster up a “wow”. Just an absolute powerhouse of a player’s distance iron. The VIBRCOR technology gives them a nice clean and powerful feel. Diamond Face VFT also contributes to that feel, but also plays a huge role in the club’s forgiveness and impressive distance. So if you’re looking for the best of all worlds in a sleek player’s profile, Tour Edge’s C722 irons are absolutely worth taking for a spin if you’re in the market for some new clubs!

Hi, I was just curious if you found any significant upgrade in the C722s compared to the C721s? Obviously the profile is smaller, but anything else? Also, what is the difference between the Elevate 95 vss in the 721s, compared to the elevate 95 mph in the 722s? Thanks in advance for you response

' src=

For the shafts, I think it’s just a newer branding of that model and should be fairly similar. That’s all I know about it.

As far as the irons, tough to say. To me, it’s more about them being different clubs than it is upgrades. I thought the C722 was a little more of a player’s club and also had better sound and feel. Both were solid clubs, but I prefer the C722 every time.

' src=

Where are these clubs sold. I know you can buy them on Amazon but I would like to hit them before buying. What price range are they?

I would go to Tour Edge’s website and look at their dealer locator. Additionally, this is past year’s model so it may be harder to track some down, but prices should be good on them if you can find them.

' src=

Are you able to do a review of the E722 irons please. Pretty sure most of us higher handicappers will appreciate that review. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to get to those last season, but still might do so. That said, the new versions will be launched soon which will be our first priority.

' src=

Just curious on the shaft you used for this test and corresponding thoughts? I went to a local fitter and he recommended the elevate 95mph stiff shaft. I hit my 7 iron around 91-92 mph. I know you have a higher swing speed and curious how the shaft you tested felt.

Mat, I don’t honestly remember what shaft I used for testing. I would ultimately say that you really need to feel it in your own hands and how it responds to your swing, especially given the differences you described.

Tour Edge C722 Irons Review – Are They Forgiving & Good for High Handicappers?

tour edge c722 irons graphite

The Tour Edge Exotics certainly live up to their name with premium and innovative features that deliver on multiple levels.

Tour Edge C722 Irons Overview

The Tour Edge C722 Irons feature a closed cavity that masks a hollow body design.

One of the things we noticed right off the bat with these irons is that they feature a sort of “V” shaped back that is becoming more and more popular among irons these days. The “V” shape produces a low center of gravity in the middle but provides more mass as it works its way out to the heel and toe of the club.

The Tour Edge C722 irons also feature what Tour Edge calls Dual Vibrcor technology. All this really is is a TPU gel injected into the hollow body of these irons. It does smooth out vibration and gives these irons a unique feel however.

The face is made of maraging steel and it is plasma-welded onto the 17-4 stainless steel body. We really liked this feature because it gives these irons metal-wood type flex. Not only is the maraging steel extremely thin, coupling it with a stainless steel head gives these irons incredible flex.

The Tour Edge C722 irons are extremely impressive and have a more traditional look and styling than many modern game-improvement irons.

Are Tour Edge C722 Irons Forgiving?

tour edge c722 irons graphite

That all being said, the Tour Edge C722 irons aren’t the most forgiving irons on the market.

It’s even kind of hard to call them game-improvement irons. They have thin toplines and not much offset to speak of. However, the hollow body design and the perimeter weighting will certainly add distance to your shots – even when you miss the sweet spot.

We also like that the center of gravity is nice and deep in these irons. A deep CG will help most high handicap and mid handicap players. And the added mass towards the toe and heel will also help with forgiveness.

Are Tour Edge C722 Irons Good for Beginner and High Handicappers?

At the end of the day, there are more forgiving irons out there if you are a high handicapper.

The small head shape, thin top line and reduced offset of these irons will make them inherently difficult for most high handicappers. However, the tester in our party with handicaps in the range of 18-23 really liked the feel of these irons.

They remarked that they are incredibly satisfying and feel really smooth on full swings. They will certainly help a bit with lateral accuracy; but you still have to have a fairly accurate swing to get the most out of these irons.

Should you Buy the Tour Edge C722’s or the Tour Edge E722’s?

Tour Edge also produces a sort of big brother to the Tour Edge C722’s. They’re called the E722’s and still bear the Exotic moniker.

The E722’s have some of the features that the Tour Edge C722 have like teh Vibrcor technology and diamond variable face thickness. However, the E722’s are bigger and have a thicker topline.

They also feature extreme toe weighting to compensate for your fade. We would say that the E722’s are more forgiving and better for players who are struggling with a leftward miss.

Tour Edge C722 First Impressions

tour edge c722 irons graphite

The Tour Edge C722 irons don’t really look like much in the bag. What intrigued us the most was the closed cavity back but other than that, they look more like player’s performance irons than anything else.

When we got them on the course it was a different story. We were blown away with the feel and distance of these irons. We weren’t too thrilled at the “clicky” sound they produce especially compared with the E722’s which have a deeper, more satisfying sound.

But that was a small price to pay for the accuracy of these irons. With the 7-iron, we found that a lot of our heel strikes were drawing right a little bit; but certainly not as much as they should have.

Who Are the Tour Edge C722 Irons for?

tour edge c722 irons graphite

The Tour Edge C722 would be best for high teen handicappers who are struggling a little bit with landing on the green.

They help produce straight shots and will cover up a lot of mis-hits. They also have fairly strong lofts with the 9-iron lofted at a robust 39 degrees. Descent angles were pretty good so they landed pretty dead from distance.

The only problem we have with them is that the head is much more reminiscent of a players performance iron. For most high handicappers, this won’t be a welcome site at point of address. In fact it may put a lot of players off when they’re getting fitted.

However, if you can get past the head size and the lack of offset, you will find that these irons are surprisingly forgiving and will help with accuracy.

The Tour Edge Iron Family

Aside from the Tour Edge C722 and E722 irons, Tour Edge also produces the Hot Launch irons. In our opinion, the Hot Launch irons would be more congenial for beginners and high handicappers than the Tour Edge C722 irons.

They have a larger footprint and the sole is much wider as well. They have slightly weaker lofs with  the 9-iron checking in at 38 degrees. This hurts launch but it’s better for players who are struggling with distance.

The weaker loft also helps to produce a deeper, richer sound as more of the face is squared and exposed to the ball. The Hot Launch irons also feature a 360 degree undercut cavity to match the deep center of gravity that the Tour Edge C722 irons have.
