resurrection a journey tribute

If you go ...

What: Resurrection: A Journey Tribute performs.

Where: Vilar Performing Arts Center, Beaver Creek.

When: Thursday, July 19, 8 p.m.

Cost: Tickets start at $30.

More information: Visit http://www.vilarpac.org . The 535-seat Vilar Center is located under the ice rink in Beaver Creek.

Ever since Ryan Christopher was a teenager in the late ’80s listening to Journey tapes on his Walkman, he knew that’s what he wanted to be.

Now, in 2018, Christopher is living that dream to the absolute fullest as he leads Resurrection: A Journey Tribute, the tribute that’s been deemed the “closest thing to Journey you’ll see in modern time.” Christopher himself has been called a “spot on” recreation of Journey lead singer Steve Perry, in both his voice and his performance.

The Vilar Performing Arts Center sat down with Christopher to learn all about how he “faithfully” recreates the beloved band, ahead of his performance Thursday, July 19, at Beaver Creek.

VPAC: Let’s start out with the obvious question, what is your favorite Journey song?

RYAN CHRISTOPHER: Well it’s interesting, fans may or may not recognize the song because it’s not one of their greatest hits, but it is from their best-selling album, “Escape.” The song is “Mother, Father.”

VPAC: In your opinion, what’s the most underrated Journey song?

RC: I think that would have to be “Who’s Crying Now.” It doesn’t get a lot of radio play, but whenever we play that one, wherever we go, everyone goes absolutely crazy. They love that one, but you don’t hear it around much.

VPAC: Do you remember the first Journey song you heard?

RC: That’s a tough one! My memory’s not super great, but I’m going to say it was “Faithfully.” As a teenager I used to sing that on the bus to school. That’s the song that really kicked off my love for Journey. I didn’t realize at the time how many hits they had, it wasn’t until much later that I learned how many amazing songs they’d done.

VPAC: What did you take away from seeing Journey live?

RC: I’ve seen Journey three times, with three different lead singers (Gregg Rolie, Steve Augeri, Arnel Pineda), but I’ve never seen [Steve] Perry. Thank goodness for YouTube! But anyway, for me, it wasn’t just about seeing the lead singer, it was more about watching the other musicians. I’m always completely floored by the musicianship — breathtaking is the only word I have for it. Watching them live gave me a better idea of where this music came from and how the songs are supposed to be performed.

VPAC: Of all of your stage costumes, which one is your favorite?

RC: I have a couple now but for a long time I just had one — the cheetah print shirt and black jacket. When people think of Journey and Steve Perry, they usually think of the “Escape” album tour. During that time Perry wore the light jeans and the coat with the tails and the cheetah shirt. That, by the way, took forever for me to have made. I finally found a lady but it took her nine months to get it done. But it’s important to me because we aren’t just going up there and singing Journey’s songs. Anyone can do that. We’re recreating the era, the experience, not just selling the songs again.

VPAC: What the hardest thing to recreate about Steve Perry?

RC: The voice. Wearing the costumes and dancing around the stage, that’s easy, but getting the voice right is the hard part. People hear me and tell me it looks effortless, which is great, but it’s not actually easy. It’s not easy for any vocalist. Any male vocalist has to work really hard to maintain [their sound].

VPAC: What was your most memorable performance?

RC: Everywhere we’ve performed has been great, and the crowds have been amazing. People welcome us with open arms and they’ve been really supportive. There’s so many good ones, but I think the most memorable performance was the Chicago White Sox in 2015. It was the 10th anniversary of their World Series win and we got to fly out and watch the game. As soon as the game was over they rolled out a massive stage and we got up there and performed. There were 35,000 people in the stadium. It was really cool because players from the team came on stage and sang along with us.

VPAC: Do you ever like to put your own style or flair into the performance?

RC: I try not too, because I’m trying to give someone a memory. But what I have done is listen to the live versions of the songs as well as the recorded version, and then I can recreate the liberties that Perry himself took with the songs. So if it sounds a little different or I do it a different way, it’s not me taking the liberties, it’s Perry.

VPAC: If you were to get a Journey lyric tattooed, which one would it be?

RC: [Laughing] You know, lately the lyrics that have been sticking with me are from “Faithfully.” Now that I have my daughter — she’s 20 months old — when I get to parts of that song, I think about her. It’s tough to be away from family, especially being on tour, and that’s what the song is about. It’s about getting back to them. The song epitomizes that.

VPAC: If you could ask Steve Perry one question, what would it be?

RC: It’s kind of a selfish question, but I want to be true to myself. It would be “do you have time to train me?” I don’t think I do Perry complete justice — it’s not perfect line for line. I would love to be under his wing. I would love to sit down long enough for him to give me a few pointers and push me in the right direction, and maybe even help me with some original work. I’d love to do originals someday, but I want to keep the spirit that I’ve learned from covering his work.

Obituary of Susan M Maitner

RANDOLPH NJ---Susan Abbott Maitner, of Randolph, NJ, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Susan was born on December 13, 1949 to her parents, the late Dorothea and Robert Abbott. Susan was the eldest of the couple’s two children, and the relationship she shared with her brother was a classic sibling bond formed by laughter and shared history. “We would tease each other often. I was always her ‘little’ brother, and she was my ‘big’ sister,” said Robert Abbott.

Susan graduated from Moore Catholic High School in Staten Island, and later received her bachelor’s degree from St. Peter’s College. Susan resided in Randolph, NJ for many years and enjoyed memorable days at the Abbott family vacation home in Highlands, NJ.

Those who knew Susan remember her complete devotion to her only child, son Robert E. Maitner, Jr. (her beloved “Bobby”). From the time of Bobby’s birth to the day of her death, Susan considered being Bobby’s mother the greatest blessing of her life. In 1988, Bobby predeceased his mother at the age of 17, after being involved in a car accident. Susan cared deeply and felt immense empathy and compassion for parents who had suffered a similar, heartbreaking loss. She once shared, “It has always seemed to me that just one mother’s pain over the death of her child is more than the world can bear.”

Susan’s profound loss of Bobby led her on a journey towards further enlightenment. Susan immersed herself in her faith and academic growth. She received a master’s degree from Fordham University, graduated from Blanton Peale Graduate Institute, and became a psychotherapist and pastoral counselor. “She channeled her pain and grief into becoming a kind therapist and loving friend,” said friend Marian Donnelly. Another dear friend, Karen Loveys, described Susan’s loss of Bobby, as “suffering the unthinkable, yet in time, she transformed her life into life giving water.” Susan first became a bereavement minister at Resurrection Parish in Randolph, NJ. At St. Matthew the Apostle Parish in Randolph, NJ, Susan was a Eucharistic Minister, a founding member of Cornerstone (Team I), and a member of the bereavement group Sorrowful Mothers. Susan was also a member of Compassionate Friends, a worldwide support organization for bereaved parents.

Susan gave her time selflessly to the community, with a special emphasis on education, art and creativity. Susan was elected to the Randolph Township Board of Education and served from 1990-1992, where she used her exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to further goals focused on student achievement and staff enrichment. Susan established the Robert E. Maitner, Jr. Art Scholarship fund in memory of Bobby, and was instrumental in the creation of a post-Hurricane Sandy mural by Randolph High School students in the shore town of Belmar, NJ. Susan was also involved in the restoration of parks in Highlands, NJ and was a member of the Highlands Garden Club. Additionally, Susan served on the Board of Trustees of Interweave Interfaith Learning Center in Summit, NJ, where she led many presentations for the Interweave community, including “The Soul of Grief: Expression of the Heart Through Art.”

Susan described herself as mother, writer, poet and animal lover. All who knew Susan agree that she excelled in all of these categories and many more.

In addition to her brother Robert, Susan is survived by her sweet cat James and countless friends who adored her. In addition to her son Bobby and her parents Robert and Dorothea, Susan is preceded in death by her cats Satrick and Kyrie.

Friends are invited to visit at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 Highway 10, Randolph, NJ on Friday, August 23, 2024 from 4pm-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Resurrection Parish, 651 Millbrook Avenue, Randolph, NJ, on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 10:30am. The Rite of Committal and burial will be at Holy Rood Cemetery, Morristown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s name may be made to the Randolph Regional Animal Shelter (www.randolphregionalanimalshelter.org).

Tuttle Funeral home was designed as a funeral home by funeral home architects and designers. Unllike many funeral homes that were originally old homes and then were converted into funeral homes.

Though it was designed as a funeral home, it still provides the warm comforting feeling of a home, but with more space and an open feeling.

50 years on, Harlem Week shows how a New York City neighborhood went from crisis to renaissance

In the 1970s, decades of disinvestment had culminated in a mass exodus from Harlem known as urban flight

NEW YORK -- In the 1970s, Harlem’s deserted streets and tumbledown tenements told the story of a neighborhood left behind. Disinvestment had taken its toll.

Violence, crime and poor living conditions had become the norm and nearly 50,000 residents — a third of the area's population — left Harlem over the decade. Amid the exodus, a girl named LeeSandra Moore hugged her own mother goodbye. Her mother was relocating to Virginia.

“It was a scary time,” said Moore, now 52 and still living in Harlem. “I couldn’t blame her for that.”

Harlem and hardship were often seen as one, but in 1974 Percy Sutton, then the Manhattan borough president, launched a revitalization campaign. His brainchild, Harlem Week, shifted the spotlight from Harlem’s troubles to its legacy as a global Black mecca of arts, culture and entrepreneurship. Over the years, it helped bring back long-departed residents.

On Sunday, New York celebrated Harlem Week’s 50th anniversary, capping off 18 days of free programming that showcased all the iconic neighborhood has to offer. Through challenges and changes, said the Rev. Al Sharpton, whose National Action Network is headquartered in Harlem, “Harlem Week has been the constant line through the last 50 years of America’s most historic Black neighborhood.”

In the 1970s, considered the neighborhood’s darkest years by many historians, Sutton knew Harlem needed a resurrection.

Those who stayed during urban flight — mostly low-income, Black families — turned on their televisions to see news reporters describe their home as a “sinking ship.” They had lived through recent unrest, such as a 1964 riot that killed an unarmed Black teenager, Malcolm X’s assassination in 1965 and the turmoil after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968.

Ahead of the first Harlem Day in 1974, Sutton called up elected officials. He gathered cultural icons, including James Baldwin, Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Maya Angelou, Tito Puente and Max Roach.

Radio DJs Hal Jackson and Frankie Crocker staged a concert, and actor Ossie Davis cut a ribbon at 138th Street and 7th Avenue, declaring the start of “Second Harlem Renaissance.” That ceremony renamed 7th Avenue to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, in honor of the congressman who represented Harlem, and marked the debut of Harlem Day.

It was the first time a New York City street took the name of a person of color.

“It was such a successful day,” said Lloyd Williams — one of Harlem Day’s co-founders and the current president of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce — that New Yorkers wanted to make it annual. Harlem Day then evolved into Harlem Weekend and eventually Harlem Week, which, before the pandemic, entailed a full month of festivities.

“Only in Harlem could a week be more than seven days,” said Williams, whose family has lived in Harlem since 1919. “Our development impacts communities of color in America and around the world — what we call a ‘Harlem State of Mind.’”

This year’s celebration involved hundreds of food and merchandise vendors and entertainment, from Broadway performances and an Apollo Hour to a tribute to Harry Belafonte. Residents engaged in empowerment activities: financial literacy workshops, career training and the Children’s Festival, where every child walked away with a back-to-school backpack.

The air buzzed not only with celebration, but healing — a drive to address Harlem’s long-standing health crises. During hip-hop artist JSWISS' performance at the State Office Building, white-coated volunteers wheeled a cart to take concert-goers’ blood pressure. And during a Black health summit, attendees heard lectures on drug misuse, HIV/AIDS and healthy aging.

Jennifer Saunders, a 33-year-old resident of the Bronx, attended the summit learn about her health, “so I can live long.” Since her Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis in 2017, she has attended Harlem Week five times.

Cynthia Bailey, 57, a model and Real Housewives of Atlanta star, attended this year’s Harlem Week as a celebrity speaker, sharing her journey with fibroids and her mother’s with cancer.

“There’s so much fear. My mom was terrified when she found out that she had breast cancer, and that keeps us from going into screenings,” Bailey told The Associated Press. “These types of events are super important because it just helps us understand that your life is more important than the fear.”

Malik Yoba, 55, born in the Bronx and raised in Harlem, says he spent his childhood playing in the dirt of vacant lots. But as an actor, Yoba brought Harlem’s story to screens nationwide, and now, he fights the housing inequality he experienced.

“When you grow up in disenfranchised and divested communities, you can’t see the forest through the trees,” said Yoba, who was another featured speaker at Harlem Week. “You can grow up believing that walking by burnt-down buildings is your birthright, as opposed to understanding that building is a business.”

Hazel Dukes, 92, a prominent New York civil rights activist and Harlem resident of 30 years, has spent her life fighting discrimination. She lived in the same Harlem building as Sutton and organized alongside him, later becoming a national president of the NAACP in 1989.

“I know what it feels to be denied,” said Dukes, who was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, where she endured Jim Crow segregation.

Organizers and residents credit Harlem Week with spurring revitalization: Restored buildings, new enterprises, and immigrants who add to an already vibrant melting pot. Harlem's streets sing with local jazz, reggae, R & B, and gospel traditions.

Since the renaming of 7th Avenue 50 years ago, other streets now bear names such as Frederick Douglass Boulevard, Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam Way and Ann Petry Place, in honor of bygone trailblazers. While hope abounds, there’s also unease over ongoing issues like diabetes and rising gentrification .

Moore, the Harlem native whose mother moved to Virginia, watched as big chains like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Old Navy moved in, sometimes displacing local shops and driving up rent prices. “Some of that is okay, but what about the small business where you can get that great sandwich that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?” she asked.

“Fast food is just about on every corner,” added Moore, who advocates for healthy eating as a chef and teaches culinary classes to local K-12 students. She rattled off the locations of local McDonald’s: two within an eight-minute walk along 125th Street; and in the past, even one within Harlem Hospital.

At Harlem Week, Moore represented GirlTrek, a national movement of Black women promoting health through walking. Taking a break from handing out flyers, she said, “I feel like I should have left a long time ago, but something about Harlem draws me back to it.”

“Harlem is my beginning. Harlem is my future. Harlem is a huge part of what makes me who I am,” she continued. “I will rep Harlem forever. I will, no matter what.”

Marvel Officially Introduces Nick Fury's Daughter (By Having Her Targeted by the Punisher)

Supergirl's new power might be the most invasive thing any kryptonian has been able to do, 10 funniest far side comics that found the funny side of mobsters.

  • When Nick Fury investigates Phil Coulson's resurrection, fans see his gravestone, and the 6-word tribute Fury left on his tombstone to honor him.
  • Coulson becomes a cosmic hero bonded with the powerful Death Stone, proving his gravestone right.
  • Fury's inscription of Coulson as a hero is false; with the Death Stone, Coulson could become a villain like he was in Heroes Reborn.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Ms. Marvel Annual #1! Phil Coulson is one of the few iconic Marvel characters who got his start in live-action in the MCU before making a name for himself in the comic book landscape as well, and Nick Fury was right next to him during that journey across mediums. Together, Coulson and Fury ran S.H.I.E.L.D. at maximum efficiency, and when Coulson died, he was greatly missed by Fury. And now, fans can see exactly how Fury honored Coulson’s memory, as his resurrection actually revealed the 6-word tribute Nick Fury had carved on his grave.

In Ms. Marvel Annual #1 “The Death Stone Saga: Chapter Four” by Derek Landy and Sara Pichelli, Nick Fury stands at Phil Coulson’s gravesite after getting an alert on the pager he placed in Coulson’s coffin upon his death. On the surface, Fury is faced with two possibilities: someone dug up Coulson’s body before activating his pager, or Coulson has returned from the dead and activated it himself.

While readers are aware of which one of those possibilities is the reality of the situation, Fury isn’t yet convinced that Coulson is back, and decides to proceed with caution until he discovers the truth for himself. Before Fury breaks down the situation and details what he’s going to do next, readers see him standing somberly over Coulson’s desecrated grave, with a full view of the engraving Fury added to the tombstone of his fallen friend: “ He loved heroes and was one ”.

Marvel Comics just made a huge reveal: Nick Fury has a daughter. That's not all, as it seems she has found herself in the crosshairs of the Punisher.

Coulson is About to Prove His Gravestone Right by Becoming a Cosmic Hero

The infinity watch: the death stone saga.

Nick Fury may still be in the dark about what has become of Coulson’s corpse, but those who have been following the ongoing Infinity Watch storyline that’s taking place across a number of Annual books know that Coulson has been bonded with the Death Stone. The Death Stone was recently created by Thanos during his latest solo title. Made from the essence of Mistress Death herself, Thanos created the Death Stone in order to bond with it, and become Death incarnate.

However, the Death Stone rejected Thanos and flew from his hand after he tried to bond with it, as it traversed the cosmos to find a suitable host. And against all odds, the Death Stone chose the already-deceased Phil Coulson, who clawed his way out of his grave and traveled to a mysterious location that has yet to be revealed. However, what fans do know is that now Agent Coulson has the chance to prove his gravestone right, and become a cosmic hero with the power of the Death Stone.

Coulson’s Gravestone Inscription was a Nice Sentiment, but It was Completely False

While calling Coulson someone who “ loved heroes and was one ” is a nice sentiment on Nick Fury’s part, it’s actually completely false. After Coulson is killed by Deadpool in Secret Empire and then resurrected, he becomes disillusioned with superheroes. That’s what led him to sell his soul to Mephisto in Heroes Reborn to create an alternate reality where the Avengers didn’t exist, and the world’s greatest superheroes were the Squadron Supreme, which he had control over. In other words, Coulson hated Marvel’s superheroes so much that he willingly damned his soul for eternity to get rid of them.

Now that Coulson is back with the power of the Death Stone, he has the chance to prove his gravestone right and become a true superhero, but there’s also the chance that he’ll become a despicable villain like he was in Heroes Reborn, only this time, he’ll have real cosmic power backing him. Only time will tell what Coulson will become with this newfound power, but even if he descends into villainy, fans still have Nick Fury ’s touching tribute to the good man Phil Coulson once was.

Ms. Marvel Annual #1 by Marvel Comics is available now.
