Kids grow. Get a bike that grows with them. Growth spurts happen — but they shouldn’t stop you from investing in a quality kids’ bike that will inspire a healthy hobby for life. When you buy a kids’ bike at a participating location, you can bring it back and get credit toward the purchase of a new one. The trade in credit will be based on Bicycle Blue Book value after condition is evaluated. This is a great way to to upgrade for a little less and keep those young ones riding! No good bike should sit around collecting dust, so we resell qualifying kids’ bikes through our Red Barn Refresh pre-owned bike shop or donate them to a local charity. That way your little one has a fun, comfortable, safe ride that fits, and so does someone else.

Hey, were you guys born in a barn? Well, no… most of us weren’t, but Wisconsin’s Trek Bicycles was, in a red barn, so the story goes. Trek says the Red Barn Refresh program is the cycling industry’s first manufacturer-led, bike trade-in and refurbishment program. The goal here is to make it easy to “return a used bike in exchange for store credit”.

Trek Red Barn Program certified awesome

According to Trek, the used bikes are to be traded in at any Trek store or participating Trek retailer. The bike is then returned to the Red Barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin. There it will be “expertly revitalized to meet exacting standards, certified by a professional Trek technician”.

Trek Red Barn Program certified trek tech

The bike will go through a 151-point inspection process to repair and replace what’s needed. Only then will it be “certified awesome” and resold online and at TrekBikes.com . The program’s purpose is to extend the bicycle’s lifecycle and reduce its carbon footprint.

Trek Says…

Trek Red Barn Program used bikes

From the Press Release:

“ Red Barn Refresh was dreamt up as a solution to extend the useable life of Trek’s bicycles. By giving bikes a second chance, Red Barn Refresh is extending a bike’s lifecycle, which will in turn reduce the cycling industry’s waste streams.

The program also gives riders access to high-quality bikes at approachable price points while simultaneously providing a convenient way to trade-in quality-owned bicycles that many consumers may not know what to do with.

The program is part of Trek’s second  Sustainability Report  which outlines Trek’s goals to reduce emissions and the new ways that Trek is changing its business in order to better the planet.”

great now even second hand bikes will to expensive, and their new bikes will increase in price so as to make the overpriced second hand bike seem like a bargain, the 20k tiagra bike is coming!

Dave Burckhard

Really? Creating a market of appealing new and secondhand bikes will cause all bikes to get more expensive? How? In the real world, people place the value of goods on what they’re willing to pay. Competition, supply and demand, and a growing or shrinking market is what determines price. And, BTW, have you seen the prices of used bikes these days? There’s a bargain on every block.

DefRyder

It’s even worse than TPC I bought a new 2022 Trek Powerfly FS 9 EQ (paid MSRP plus tax that came to $6,700). Trke’s Red Barn site valued my trade at $2300. WTH!

This tells me there’s a massive markup between BOM (bill of materials) when received from the factory in China to the showroom.

You’re kidding yourself if you think a Madone SLR 9 is anywhere worth $13,200. Probably cost no more than $3-4K to ‘build’ the bike at the factory.

Esteban Scrullio

Congratulations you have unlocked economics.

Dirt McGirt

Very green if we don’t turn an eye toward the shipping of bikes back and forth and all the boxes, foam packaging and masking tape involved.

Thanks for taking more business off of small used bike shop’s plate, corporate overlords!

Trek to give trade in credit and sell used bikes on website

Interesting move here. Trek will give you blue book value on a trade in, refurbish, and resell used bikes on their website.

https://www.fastcompany.com/90948733/trek-wants-to-sell-you-a-used-bike?fbclid=IwAR3vyclrVBtXJuQN_qI5MP1yobLq9bp0y6tes3tlce7lfAzHaz-wVRnjGrY

This is a pretty big deal to me. The worst part of bicycles for me is selling them and dealing with all the low ballers. I love that Trek is going back to the old model of trade-ins, which has become non-existent, at least where I live. I hope other brands follow their lead.

Too bad they are limiting it to Trek bikes…I understand why they are, but they would obviously get more traction if they opened it to other brands.

Only Trek trade ins? Is that right? I was worried about that.

Every article I have seen has specifically said trade in in your “used Trek” bicycles or similar verbiage.

If you happen to have an old, unused Trek bike sitting in your garage, Trek wants it back.
and consumers now can trade their Trek bikes in exchange for in-store credit toward a new bike.

Yeah, that sucks. I get it, but it sucks.

FWIW and this is a bit dated… I bought a Santa Cruz Superlight 29er from Mikes Bikes in 2014. Then sold it late 2015 to buy a road bike. Back then (and now?) Mikes Bikes had a program where they offered Blue Book value on the bike, and it was something like $900. I sold it locally (Craigslist) within 2 weeks for $1900. Think I originally paid $2500 before tax. Seemed like a good deal versus BB value.

That money was used to buy the last 58cm 2015 Trek Domane 6.2 Disc in the USA, in Dec 2015. My LBS had it shipped from New Jersey warehouse if I’m not mistaken. Paid $4k on an MSRP of $5k. Sold that in 2021 and got $2200 from the Pros Closet, without any hassle other than asking the Trek store for a box and stuffing it into said box (about 3 hours?). That seemed like a pretty good price and I would be hard pressed to get much more selling locally. Everyone around here has been selling on Facebook Marketplace, and I refused to get an account in 2021 and my Domane got no interest on Craigslist.

My experience selling locally is people offer me $2500 online, we show up in a safe place, they take my bike and run it through a bunch of puddles, and then say something like “would you take $1500 cash?” I am so over that. I’d rather just put it on eBay and hope. The Pros Closet sounds like the best now days though.

Regardless of the articles, I see no stated restriction on the actual Trek site:

https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/retail_bbb_bike_trade_in/

They have an embedded version of the BBB site to get a quick value estimate. I would sure hope that if it’s restricted to Trek bikes only, this page would clearly state it.

PS, I am watching the Trek training vid on it right now to double-check…

  • I saw nothing about restriction to trade-ins being Trek bikes only.

FWIW I tell people before agreeing to meet something like “I’m firm on price, look at these comps on (eBay) completed listings, don’t show up and offer me less. Do you still want to meet.” No comps, no problem, I still lay down ground rules on non-negotiable items before agreeing to meet. Sure some household stuff its listed at $50 for negotiating room, and I’ll take $40 so the buyer feels good they got a deal.

Thanks for checking Chad. I’ll ask the local Trek owner this weekend if I can. The LBS sold and it’s Trek owned now.

So true! Before agreeing to meet with FB Marketplace, OfferUp, Craigslist buyers I now always confirm with them that they’re fine with the asking price subject to it meeting my description/photos. Used to have too many situations where people show up and say “I could only withdraw $x from my ATM, is that OK?”

Yes, thanks for bringing that up. I also discuss payment before meeting. Mostly Venmo/Zelle these days. Yesterday I sold my first item on FB Marketplace (yes I created an account with the devil LOL), and took a crisp $100 bill. Off to sell more furniture!

Trek probably saw how much money companies like the Pros Closet are making on used bikes, plus since they are only giving credit and they get a new sale out of it.

I would guess that they would only be paying the trade in price. It’s not super great.

For example, I looked up a 2023 Emonda SL7 (current model that is just one year old now)

Trade in price in very good condition $3000

50% off for a one year old bike. That 3, 4, 5 year old bike is going to get you a $500 credit.

so Blue Book values are still low-balling, like my 2015 example posted above.

Is that really low balling or typical of a trade-in process in a modern economy?

Just like cars, trading in is set at a lower value so the dealer has room to a profit on the re-sale. As a person getting the T-I value, they are effectively paying for a service to offload the selling hassle for a quicker & easier way to get the shinny new bike home.

The experiences above demonstrate the issues well. Whether the difference in price from trade-in vs private sale are worth it to each person in each instance is totally in the eye of the bike holder. This is just an option for those would like the avoid the work required to sell at a higher price to pocket ratio. If someone doesn’t like the T-I offer, they can remove it from the new bike sale and handle it on their own. Simple.

I’ve gotten trade-in offers on cars, and they were FAR better than blue book on bikes. See my post above.

Sure, we can N=1 this to death. I worked in my shop enough over the last decade as we’ve done this process before and after BBB was in the mix. I’ve also sold enough of my own bikes to have a fine picture of this from several angles.

Bikes are not cars. Pre-pandemic bikes used to quickly drop to 50% of retail. I’ve bought a lot of used bikes at pennies on the dollar over the years. Both my gravel and mtb were $9k builds that I picked up for around $3k in excellent condition.

It seems like we are getting back to a more normal used bike market now that supply chains have caught up and since there is this glut of used bikes from the pandemic that need to find riders.

Trek is going to ship the bike to a warehouse, refurbish it, and then ship it to a store to be sold. They need to pay wholesale to make it work. It honestly doesn’t sound like a huge money maker for them.

What seems to get lost in the conversation here is that Trek is serious about reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. They have signed on to SBTI , which requires them to set measurable goals for themselves to meet the science-based targets behind the Paris accord.

Buyback programs which gives these bikes a second life is one way to reduce your emissions count when measured against total quantity of bikes sold. Oh, and it might be good for business too.

It’s refreshing to see companies taking concrete, measurable steps toward emissions reduction, instead of simply green-washing their image, which is what a lot of industrial companies are doing.

Trek Kids' Bike Trade-Up Program

December 06, 2021  /  Michele Lamelin

trek bike trade up program

The holidays are approaching, and you’re thinking it’s time to introduce the world of biking into your kids’ lives. But your biggest hesitation is, you’ve seen how quickly your child’s outgrown things like shoes and pants. So let alone a bike, can be a fair bit more expensive than a pair of pants, could very well be collecting dust by next year. The investment seems difficult to justify, given those facts.

Do think again after you learn about Trek’s Kids’ Bike Trade-Up Program. The people at Trek have kids too, so they have encountered the same dilemma, and came up with a brilliant, community-based solution. Here is how the Trek Kids’ Bike Trade-Up Program works:

When you buy a kids’ bike at a participating location, you can bring it back within three years and get up to 50% of the bike’s original purchase price, if under $1,000, in credit toward the purchase of a new one.

No good bike should sit around collecting dust, so we donate older bikes to local charities when you upgrade. That way your little one has a fun, comfortable, safe ride that fits, and so does someone else.

 - Trek

It’s certainly a win-win for all parties involved. You can trade up your child’s bike from Epicenter Cycling as we are a certified Trek dealer. We will help you find the right size bike for your child as well as have up to 50% store credit towards that new bike when you trade in the old bike if purchased from one of our store locations within the past three years.

Don’t wait, call now and inquire about the Trek Kids’ Bike Trade-Up Program. We have a large number of bikes in stock. Surprise your child with a gift that will be remembered for years, with miles of memories ridden on it.

Trek reveals its most tricked-out custom bikes ever with project one superlatives.

From pink zebra to bird of paradise, cyclists can dream big for their new custom ride with Trek's version of superlatives – showcasing just how far custom rides can go.

WATERLOO, Wis. , Aug. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Trek Bicycle is commemorating just how far custom bike designs have been taken through its custom bike program Project One . From the most expensive bike ever custom-designed, to the most difficult paint schemes, to a 4D design that invoked the olfactory senses, the Project One team have long taken cyclists' dreams and turned them into a reality. The best of Trek's work has been curated for the first time to inspire amateur and hobby riders alike to dream big when it comes to their next bike.

"One of the benefits of Project One is that the sky is the limit," says Sam Foos , Marketing Director of Project One. "Our talented, diverse team of painters and builders come from backgrounds as technical as master mechanics, and as artistic as tattoo designing. Looking through our portfolio of work unearthed some hidden gems we've been lucky enough to create throughout the years. Who ever thought we'd get to bring scratch-and-sniff to life on a bike?! We never know what design is around the corner that just might be the next coolest project our team has ever gotten our hands on."

Bringing to life the coolest customizations in Project One history, examples of superlative wins include:

Best 4D Bike – The Peach Bike : The Peach Bike, painted for a cyclist that loved peaches, features hand painted peaches using peach scented scratch and sniff paint. Now, the customer can smell the peaches as they rip and flip their Trek Ticket downhill. This was the first scented bike completed by Trek.

Best Athlete Customization – Pink Zebra Bike: Caroline Buchanan is a Trek C3 professional athlete, author, and a woman on a mission to empower young girls to get involved in cycling and sports. In her recent children's book, one page featured the outline of a Trek bicycle, inviting kids to submit their own bike design. A young rider from Buchanan's home country of Australia colored a bright pink zebra print bike. Caroline loved the design so much that she decided to bring the bike to life. In 2024, Caroline rode her zebra print Trek Ticket to a podium finish at the first-ever women's slope style event, Crankworx Rotorua.

Most Animalistic – Cow Bike: The Trek CX Cup is an annual world cup cyclocross event and one of the only stops in North America hosted in Waterloo, Wisconsin , Trek HQ's backyard. Inspired by the Midwest's grazing cattle and dairy farms, the race embraces a cow-themed identity, filled with cow décor, cow costumes, and even live cows for spectators to pet. For one rider, it only made sense to race on a cow-inspired bike. The rider has two Trek Boone bikes painted like the state's favorite grass-fed friends – one, a black and white cow scheme, and the other, a brown and white cattle design to complete his herd.

Most Difficult Paint Scheme – Oil Slick Bike: The oil slick painting technique puts the Project One paint team to the test, as it uses ultra-iridescent Chroma™ coating to create unique color combinations in shades of orange, blue, and purple. It's the only paint scheme that can't be modified or tweaked once the process has begun. When not applied properly at the first attempt, painters must scrap it and try again.

Most Expensive Customization – Bird of Paradise Bike: The "Bird of Paradise" Domane was painted for a cyclist who wanted to create an ode to their mother, whose favorite flower was the bird-of-paradise. The owner requested that each petal and leaf render its own unique design – requiring extensive graphic work and design presentations between the bike owner and Trek's expert graphics team and paint shop. When all was said and done, the one-of-a-kind Domane left with a $13,000 paint job that took 120 hours to complete and a total cost of $25,000 .

Fastest Project One design turnaround: When Lidl-Trek athlete, Giulio Ciccone , won the red polka dot jersey in the 2023 Tour de France , the Trek paint shop had the chance to show off their ability to work quickly. The graphics and paint teams in Waterloo, Wisconsin , created a custom Trek Madone in a single day. The bike then traveled for two days before being hand delivered to Ciccone in France . From jersey win to delivery, the project took only three days, a record-setting time for the Project One team, and a well-deserved surprise for the Lidl-Trek rider.

The Project One custom bike program allows riders to turn their dream bike into a reality with cutting edge components, a seemingly endless palette of exquisite colors, and ultra-premium paint schemes created by the best designers in the industry. The process is easy: pick a bike frame, customize your bike parts, then decide if you'd like to select your paint scheme, or come to the expert Trek in-house designers with a paint concept for them to bring to life.
