Patagonia Tours & Holidays

Hiker in red jacket in the mountains of Patagonia, on a clear sunny day with a few clouds

Sandwiched between two oceans and sprawled across two countries. Patagonia is as ‘end-of-the-world’ as it gets.

Advancing glaciers, gushing waterfalls, snow-topped granite pillars…it’s no wonder Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over this beautiful slice of South America . Where else can you hike past herds of guanaco, hear giant shards of ice crash into the sea, sail the Beagle Channel past unique flora and fauna, and drop by the world’s southernmost city? If anywhere makes you feel small, it’s Patagonia. Adventure to the end of the world and appreciate our planet at its most wild and spectacular.

Patagonia travel FAQs

Where is patagonia.

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 9-18°C in summer and 0-6°C in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 22°C, but it's a chilly 4°C at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

What to pack for Patagonia

Please check your Essential Trip Information for a complete list of packing suggestions for your itinerary.

These are the basics you will need to bring for an active adventure in Patagonia:

  • Closed-in, waterproof walking shoes/hiking boots

Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)

Rucksack and day bag

Reusable water bottle

Thermal base layers

Hiking clothing

Waterproof/windproof jacket

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Tours to Patagonia

Why take a patagonia tour with explore.

Covering 1 million km2, the national park of Patagonia is a vast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its spectacular scenery and diverse wildlife. The jewel in the crown is the Torres del Paine National Park, one of the most impressive mountain areas on earth. Taking its name from the Tehuelche word  Paine , meaning ‘blue’, the park encompasses stunning scenery, with constantly-changing views of peaks, glaciers and icebergs, vividly-coloured lakes of turquoise, ultramarine and grey, and quiet green valleys filled with wild flowers.

On our Adventures in Patagonia trip, choose between a comfortable wildlife hike or a more challenging 22km trek to one of the park's most impressive lookouts. Keen walkers will relish the moderate-to-challenging Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine walking tour, which travels through the heart of Los Glaciares National Park to the magnificent Fitz Roy Massif, and includes the iconic 'W Trek'.

Most of our tours are small group tours , which mean you'll be joined by like-minded adventurers and an expert local leader throughout. If you'd prefer to go without a group, our Adventures in Patagonia Private Tour  follows the same itinerary as the small group tour, but with private guides for the key sites.

FAQs about our Patagonia tours

When is the best time to go to Patagonia? Argentina’s summer is from December-February, so the best time to travel is throughout this period as well as the ‘shoulder season’ – roughly from the end of October to start of April. Because it’s so far south in the Southern Hemisphere, the weather is really unpredictable so we really only recommend travelling during this period. Winters (June-August) in Patagonia can be extremely cold and windy.

What is accommodation like in Patagonia?   Patagonia is an area of small towns that give access to the great outdoors, so the accommodation here is all very well-located. Travellers to Patagonia are after a comfortable night’s sleep in accommodation that makes the most of its surroundings, and this is exactly what our accommodation in Patagonia offers.

What should I pack for a trip to Patagonia? Patagonia’s weather is erratic, so packing for all weathers is essential. One day it can be clear blue skies from start to end, while the following day the winds could bring the clouds rolling in. A windproof, waterproof jacket is a must-have, along with walking poles for the hiking. Comfortable walking boots or shoes are necessary, and sunglasses, suncream and lipbalm with sun protection will all come in handy. In the evenings, comfortable, casual clothes with a warm fleece or jumper are perfect for going to the local restaurants. You don’t need anything fancy or smart with you – everyone in Patagonia dresses for the outdoors and the elements, so comfort is key.

What are the best hikes in Patagonia?  By far the most famous trek in Patagonia is the W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park. This five-day trek is arguably the most mind-blowing and scenic trek in Patagonia - each day is full of glaciers, snow-capped peaks and emerald lagoons, with constant views of the granite spires – or towers - that give Torres its name. Aside from the W Trek, you can’t escape incredible scenery in Patagonia, with the Fitz Roy Massif in Chalten giving Torres del Paine a run for its money. Here, the classic trek to Laguna de los Tres is the most well-known hike, taking hikers to the emerald lagoon of Los Tres at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy. Another shorter but equally iconic hike is a trek on the ice of Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park. This enormous natural masterpiece calves off at an incredible rate - hiking on the ice itself is a unique way to get up close.

Is the water in Patagonia safe to drink? Water is safe to drink in most places in the park. If you’re worried, we always recommend travelling with a Water-to-go bottle, a reusable bottle with a filter that eliminated over 99.9% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source. Look after your health, and protect beautiful Patagonia from single-use plastics. Win-win. Is Patagonia a good destination for solo travellers? Patagonia is a great destination to travel solo with a small group. And on an Explore trip you’ll be in great company – around 50% of people on our group trips are travelling solo. Our trips attract people from all over the world who love to explore, discover and share their passion for travel. The experiences you share and the friends you make along the way are the reasons why so many solo travellers travel with us again and again.

More on Argentina Patagonia holidays and tours

Argentinian Patagonia is home to a great variety of places and sights to see as well as activities to do. Ushuaia, located at the end of the earth in the Tierra del Fuego National Park, offers great remote mountain treks. It is on the Beagle Channel and is the launch port for Antarctica and Patagonia cruises. El Calafate is the gateway to the Perito Moreno Glacier offering a great range of accommodation and activities. Horse rides, kayak, visiting estancias, sailing glacial lakes amongst ice floes are just some of the activities available.

One of the highlights of an Argentina Patagonia tour is a visit to the Peninsula Valdez. Wildlife is the attraction with Southern right whales from June to December and Magellanic penguins from September through March. El Chalten is paradise for trekkers with classic trails such as Laguna de Los Tres which lies at the base of the Fitzroy spires. The Lake District area offers verdant forests and dramatic volcanoes pocked by the crystal blue bodies of water that gives the area its name.  Bariloche and San Martin de Los Andes are in the heart of this region too.

More on Chile Patagonia holidays and tours

The Torres del Paine National Park is a must-see destination on any Chilean Patagonia holiday. Its granite spires, shimmering lakes, abundant wildlife and stunning scenery will not fail to amaze. Trekkers are drawn by the famous “W” trek or the more demanding “O”, also known as the Paine Circuit.  There are guided and self-guided options, and for the more discerning traveller, all-inclusive adventure packages.

The Aysen region is the hidden gem on a Chile Patagonia Holiday. Glaciers, forests, wildlife, mountains, lakes and no people. The Chilean Lake District, between Puerto Varas and Temuco, offers the visitor a wide range of choices. Outdoor activities include rafting, kayak, cycling, trekking as well as horse riding. The backdrop to all these are emeralds coloured lakes, snow-capped volcanoes and marvellous scenery. There is a wide range of options for accommodation and facilities are excellent.

Places of Interest

Below you will find a few of the many attractions Patagonia has to offer for your holiday.

The Horns in Torres del Paine National Park Chile

Chilean Patagonia

Chilean Patagonia is a pristine wilderness of fjords, glaciers, plains, mountains and forests.

Southern Patagonia’s main attraction is the Torres del Paine National park. The granite spires attract many visitors to what some have called the 8th Wonder of the World. The park is a trekkers paradise with two classic treks, the Paine W and the Paine Circuit.

Northern Patagonia, the Aysen region,  is one of the least populated parts of the country and is blessed with spectacular countryside.

The main airport is Balmaceda near the city of Coyhaique and must see places include Lake General Carrera and the Marble Caves, The San Rafael Glacier,  the Quelat Hanging Glacier as well as driving the Austral Road.

The Futaleufu River is a must for white water enthusiasts.

The region also offers great horseback opportunities as well as kayaking ones. Nature enthusiasts can admire the impressive scenery, imposing glaciers and fascinating wildlife and flora.

Perito Moreno Glacier Patagonia Argentina

Argentine Patagonia

Argentine Patagonia, the southern half of Argentina, is a remote, wind swept land of plains, mountains, lakes and glaciers.

The main airport is at El Calafate which is the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park.

Nearby is the mighty Perito Moreno glacier where you have the opportunity to get up close to the ice on one of the many walkways or on a boat trip.

El Chalten, a  3 1/2 hour drive from Calafate, is the trail head for treks in to the base of Cerro Torre, Fitzroy or for the more intrepid, on to the South Patagonian ice-cap.

Ushuaia, on the Beagle channel, is the southern most city of Argentina. Ushuaia is fascinating for historical interest, is rich in wildlife and is departure port for many Antarctic cruises

Thanks to your wonderful organising the Patagonian leg of our trip went extra smoothly and we had a most enjoyable visit there as well. All the accommodation was excellent and in most places we were upgraded to great rooms with great views. Perfect for photographers to check out the sunrises and sunsets.

C. Darby, Australia, 2014 » Patagonia Self-guided Tour with W Trek

The week in Torres Del Paine was incredible – I think honestly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. I would definitely recommend it as a “must-see”.  Our hotel in Punta Arenas was nice – it was well placed in town for us to walk around and try some local restaurants and the breakfast buffet was ok.

Chiloé Island Tours and Things To Do

A photo of palafito houses in Castro, Chiloe

Chiloé Island Tours, Activities and things to Do There is so much to do and see on Chiloé Island that the main issue may be how to fit all those tours and activities into your travel itinerary.  The island of Chiloé, in Chile’s Lake District, was once a strategic point of interest for seafarers and pirates alike. Fortunately, for the intrepid traveller, it now seems often overlooked by tourists visiting Chile.   Yet it really shouldn’t be, as here you will find a culturally rich land, with landscapes ranging from temperate rainforests to agricultural land of rolling hills to pristine sand …

Patagonia Holidays

The Patagonia region, located at the southern tip of South America, straddles both Argentina and Chile.

Within Argentina, this southern region offers spectacular wild and majestic scenery in the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (Glaciers National Park) - an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 and a land of colossal mountain ranges crowned in snow and pristine glaciers descending into turquoise lakes.

There are two accessible areas in the Glaciers National Park: El Calafate is the most accessible and is the perfect base from which to visit the stunning and mighty Upsala and Onelli glaciers by catamaran and the Perito Moreno Glacier at the far western end of Lago Argentino. Stand, listen and watch and if you are lucky you may see blocks of ice carving off the ice cliff into the lake below.

Alternatively, or as an extension to your Patagonia holiday, continue north for a few hours to El Chalten, which stands at the foot of the jagged peaks of the spectacular Fitz Roy Massif. This is the base for some of Argentina's most rewarding trekking, amongst the peaks of Mts Torre and Fitz Roy. It's possible to cross from El Calafate over the border into the famous Torres del Paine National Park in Chile.

Journey to the very end of the world - a Patagonia holiday

Travel writer Nick Boulos visited Patagonia and says “there’s something rather thrilling about journeying to the very end of the world; the allure of the unknown, the promise of wild landscapes and scenes of remote grandeur.

Descending from the skies, I gazed below to a world where soaring peaks, dark and jagged, plummet into shallow waters and glaciers are the size of cities. Welcome to Patagonia. Despite being so remote, Patagonia - the southern stretches of Argentina and Chile - is surprisingly easy to get to. After a short three-hour flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, I was standing amongst some of the finest scenery known to man. Ushuaia , famed for being the southernmost city in the world and gateway to Antarctica, is the perfect introduction to Patagonia.

Dramatically framed by the snow-capped Andes and the Beagle Channel, it’s surrounded by wildlife and nature with penguin colonies and the iconic Tierra del Fuego National Park on its doorstep.Travelling north, I became transfixed at the Perito Moreno Glacier , the main attraction at Los Glaciares National Park. Its towering frozen plains and electrifying blue crevices that tumble into the icy depths of Lake Argentino continue as far as the eye can see. So vast, in fact, the glacier is the same size as Argentina’s capital.

Getting around Patagonia is a doddle too. Like much of South America, the region is blessed with a network of efficient and comfortable buses. The shifting scenery beyond the window will hold you captive as mountains give way to infinite flat steppes with scatterings of grazing guanacos. Above, Andean condors circle in wide swoops.

Across the border in Chile, things don’t get any less impressive with legendary natural wonders at every turn. Exploring the unspoilt landscapes of Torres del Paine and hiking to Mount Fitzroy are experiences that will stay with you long after you return home, much like Patagonia itself.”

Reviews of Small Group tours to Patagonia

I had a great time on this tour with Francisco on the 5 day W trek winter Patagonia hiking tour. He was very knowledgeable and helpful! I would recommend that a pair of crampons be rented and also to bring a warm sleeping bag if planning to camp outside. Otherwise food and shelter is available in the Refugio’s which is highly recommended.
It was a very rewarding experience.
Epic adventure, everything was perfectly organized

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

You can set sail on a real life pirate ship – but it’ll cost you

Bessie Ellen

When you look at a tall ship, you might immediately picture pirates on the high seas. And you wouldn’t be wrong! But, these majestic vessels, though reminiscent of a bygone era, now offer an elegant and luxurious cruising experience that’s truly unmatched.

With their large, billowing sails harnessing the power of the wind, these ships provide one of the lowest-carbon ways to explore the world.

Metro’s Cruise Editor, Richard Mellor , has curated a list of sustainable sailings that are redefining luxury slow-travel.

Their unique blend of history, modern-luxury and sustainability will leave you wondering why we don’t travel this way more often.

A beginner’s guide to tall ships

Encompassing windjammers, clippers, schooners and ketches, tall ships are traditionally rigged sailing vessels, more closely resembling those used by Messrs Columbus, Cook and co than modern-day cruising colossi.

Yet cruise they still do, offering a more intimate experience and the ability to dock at smaller points.

Despite the retro feel, some tall ships are luxurious; all are eco-friendly, with engines switched off whenever possible. On some itineraries, guests are expected to assist the crew, but usually this is optional.

Classic clippers

Clippers ship

The upmarket Star Clippers’ three-strong fleet is headlined by Royal Clipper, a 42-sail, 440ft-long beauty who ranks as the world’s largest square rigger in service.

She has three swimming pools and the same old-fashioned, teak-accented opulence as her two newer, smaller siblings, Star Clipper and Star Flyer.

Carrying 166 guests, this pair supply tropical-themed bars and Edwardian-style libraries while offering paddleboarding and kayaking.

Antigua West Indies at sea

After yoga and culinary-themed sailings in Europe in autumn, Star Flyer will spend a week exploring the Caribbean’s Leeward Islands to commence winter.

Seven nights from £1,570pp, full board, departing Nov 30, Star Clippers

Sicily by small ship

Florette

A Cornwall-based tour operator specialising in skippered holidays, Venturesail represents 15 tall ships as well as posh yachts and expedition vessels.

Among those 15 is Florette, a 103-year-old wooden windjammer, which survived the World War II while operating as a cargo ship.

Restored to her original leisure purposes, she has 11 cabins — with the option of sleeping on deck in hammocks. This autumn, join her on a circuit of Italy’s Aeolian Islands, an archipelago north of Sicily.

The town of Lipari, Lipari Islands, Aeolian Islands, Italy, Europe

Seven nights from £1,095pp for singles, half-board, departing Sep 7, Venture Sail Holidays

Life of an heiress

Horta, Faial Island, Azores, Portugal, Europe

Among Sea Cloud’s trio of windjammers, its OG is an eponymous, 64-passenger beauty who comes with some history.

Still radiating bygone splendour courtesy of marble fireplaces and French antiques, Sea Cloud was launched in 1931 for the US’s wealthiest woman, Marjorie Merriweather Post. More modern – though just as elegant – is Sea Cloud Spirit.

On all three ships, complimentary snacks are served at night and water sports are gratis by day.

Summers are spent in the Mediterranean before winters in the Caribbean.

Seven nights from £3,895pp, full board, departing Feb 2, Sea Cloud Cruises

Time to Chile out

Chilean Patagonia

Another World’s roster of trips ranges from trekking expeditions to, yes, tall ship itineraries, many of them in far-flung corners.

The operator can get you aboard Atlantic crossings or an 83-day epic from Cape Town to the UK.

Or inspect the coastline of Chilean Patagonia aboard a herring drifter. Heading north from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt, you’ll anchor beneath cliffs to undertake hikes before admiring Chile’s own lake district. Help the crew if desired.

Twelve nights from £2,220pp for
singles, full board, departing Mar 28, Another World Adventures

Simply the Bessie

The living quarters in the Bessie Ellen

If you’d rather a staycation option, consider this 120-years-young ketch.

Once a cargo trader, Bessie Ellen today hosts short breaks, week-long cruises and ten-day voyages in Cornwall and Scotland as well as Scandinavia.

Her old cargo-hold is now host to a capacious saloon and dining area. The 20 guests sleep in bunks, share a shower room and are expected to help out on deck.

Perfect for first-timers is a flexible Hebridean itinerary heading west from Oban.

Portree harborin Scotland during cloudy day, UK

Staffa’s organ-like columns, sacred Iona and teeny-tiny Eigg all might figure dependent on weather conditions, and there should be ample time for following walking trails on uninhabited islands.
