Destination Must-See's

Morocco ms1

Rick’s Cafe:

Featured in the blockbuster movie Casablanca from 1942, a visit to this restaurant is sure to spark your nostalgia. Feel like you’ve stepped into the movie as you surround yourself in the scenery reminiscent of the film. Although this is a recreation, not where it was filmed, your imagination will take hold as you watch the film on repeat and get a taste of what it was like back in the day.

Morocco ms2

Casablanca:

Morocco’s largest city, main port and most cosmopolitan city, this bustling metropolis and economic hub is sprinkled with tree-lined parks and charming colonial architecture. Its most famous landmark is the elaborate Hassan II Mosque, one of the world’s largest mosques built on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Morocco ms3

Mud brick homes:

These homes have been used throughout the world but are extremely popular in the Middle East, India and North Africa. A mud brick is made of mud or clay that is mixed with straw and hardened by baking it in the sun or a kiln. It is very inexpensive and is environmentally friendly. And most importantly, keeps houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Morocco ms4

Moroccan people:

The Berber people are Morocco’s original inhabitants but it has been touched by many cultures because of its location. As a result, its people are amongst the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. Today, it is considered an Arab nation, but you can see the diversity of the country, particularly in the variety of languages spoken – French, Spanish, Arabic and Berber dialects.

Destination Must-Do's

Morocco md1

Enjoy the cuisine:

When visiting Morocco you have to try a local favorite – stuffed bread. It is comparable to a flat bread sandwich in America with a Moroccan touch. This savory meal is filled with traditional fillings including beef or lamb suet, onions, parsley, and Moroccan spices – ginger, white pepper, coriander, turmeric, allspice, and cinnamon.

Morocco md2

See the Markets:

Souks, local markets, immerse you in the culture of morocco. Every Moroccan town has a souk quarter typically named after the day of the week they are open. No matter where you are you will find busy aisles lined with vendors selling many types of products – rugs, jewelry, metals, wood and pottery, clothing, leather goods and fresh food.

Morocco md3

Visit Rug Makers:

Traditionally, Moroccan rugs were hand woven and tied by the Berber tribe women and can take up to a year to complete. Some rugs are made as a floor covering and others are woven to hang from the wall like a tapestry. Rug designs typically depict a piece of history passed down from generation to generation, or tell the story of the weaver’s life, representing things from femininity to spirituality.

Morocco md4

Feed the Monkeys:

Learn all about MonkeyWatch, a primate eco-tourism, anti-poaching conservation program run by the Moroccan Primate Foundation in Ifrane National Park. It works to protect the Barbary apes and macaques that live in the forests of the park. Visitors will even get a chance to feed these wonderful creatures.

Expert Advice

diana

If you have some extra time before your tour begins to explore Casablanca, you’ll find plenty to do! Venture out to Safi, a port that has been of importance since Roman times, and view its grand ramparts and the fortress of Dar el Bahar.

Morocco e2

You’ll find many unique gifts in the souks (local markets). When venturing out during the day, it is typically very warm so be sure to wear loose, breathable but conservative clothing. In Moroccan culture, long skirts or slacks would be appropriate, but please no short hemlines, tank tops or tight fitting clothing.

Morocco e3

You’re in for a treat as you discover the flavors of Morocco! Be sure to try fish tagine, a mqualli (or sauce made with ginger, saffron and oil) combined with chermoula, olives and preserved lemons to add some zest and extra flavor!

What Are the Best Times to Visit Morocco?

The best time to visit Morocco largely depends on the region and the type of experience you’re looking for.

Generally, spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are ideal as the weather is more temperate across most of the country, making it pleasant for city tours and Morocco desert tours or excursions alike.

What Should You Pack for a Moroccan Adventure?

Understanding Moroccan Culture and Customs

Morocco is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions and Berber heritage , which is reflected in its customs and daily practices.

Learning a few phrases in Arabic or French can help you connect with locals, and understanding basic etiquette like dress codes and dining practices will enrich your experience .

Exploring the Imperial Cities:

Morocco tours to Casablanca

Embark on a journey through Morocco’s imperial cities , where history resonates through bustling medinas and majestic palaces.

In Fez , wander through one of the world’s oldest medinas, a labyrinth of narrow alleys filled with artisans and merchants, echoing the city’s past as a cultural and spiritual center.

Here, the historical heart of Morocco beats strongest, offering visitors a taste of a time when scholars and theologians were as pivotal as the kings of old.

Marrakesh, known for its vibrant markets and lively Djemaa el Fna square, offers a different experience. Spend the afternoon exploring the myriad of shops, where you can find everything from luxurious Moroccan rugs to intricate silver jewelry.

As night falls, the square comes alive with storytellers, musicians, and snake charmers, creating a festive atmosphere that blends traditional culture with tourist curiosity.

Casablanca, the city immortalized by Hollywood, contrasts its cinematic fame with the reality of a bustling economic hub.

The majestic Hassan II Mosque , one of the largest mosques in the world and a stunning example of Moroccan architecture, stands as a beacon on the seafront.

This city embodies the modern spirit of Morocco while retaining its rich history, evidenced by the blend of Art Deco facades and Moorish design.

Discover the Sahara:

Morocco tours to Sahara

The Sahara Desert offers an unforgettable adventure with its vast, arid landscapes and dramatic sand dunes.

A camel trek through these dunes provides not just travel but an experience of the Sahara’s mystic beauty .

As you traverse the sandy expanse, guided by a local Berber, the silence and scale of the desert are profoundly humbling.

The night in a desert camp under the star-studded sky is often described as an experience of a lifetime, with the milky way unfolding above in clear view, untouched by city lights.

The adventure doesn’t stop at dusk. Enjoying a traditional Berber meal by the fire, listening to indigenous music, and sharing stories, encapsulates the essence of Moroccan hospitality.

These experiences not only connect you with the natural environment but also with the heritage of the nomadic tribes who have navigated these lands for centuries.

Cultural Immersion:

Moroccan cuisine

Moroccan cuisine is a delightful exploration of flavors and techniques, a must-experience for any traveler.

Cities like Marrakesh and Fez boast amazing food scenes where you can taste dishes like tagine and couscous, seasoned with saffron and cumin, and sweetened with dates and figs.

Cooking classes are a popular way to dive deeper into the culinary arts of Morocco , providing the skills to recreate these flavors at home.

The craftsmanship of Morocco is another avenue for cultural immersion. In the medinas, skilled artisans craft everything from leather goods to intricate metalwork.

Visiting places like the kasbahs—fortified homes—of the Atlas Mountains offers insight into the architecture and defensive strategies of past centuries.

The Aït Benhaddou Kasbah , a UNESCO World Heritage site, is particularly famous for its appearances in numerous films and is a spectacular sight in the golden light of sunset .

The Gateway to Africa

Morroco tours to tangier

Tangier, often referred to as the gateway to Africa, presents a unique blend of cultures and histories that is distinctly different from other Moroccan cities .

Located at the northern tip of Morocco, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, Tangier has a cosmopolitan feel that has historically attracted artists, writers, and musicians from around the world.

The city’s vibrant medina, with its winding alleys and bustling markets, offers an authentic Moroccan experience, while the modern developments along the coastline showcase its growth and adaptation to contemporary demands.

Exploring Tangier includes visiting the Kasbah , which stands high above the medina, offering panoramic views of the sea.

This historic fortress encapsulates Tangier’s rich past as a strategic military and trading post.

A visit to the Grand Socco, a lively market square, allows travelers to experience the vibrant local life and purchase unique Moroccan crafts and foods.

Tangier’s cultural diversity is also highlighted in its cuisine, which features a fusion of Moroccan and European influences, reflecting its status as a historical melting pot.

A Dive into the Heart of Moroccan Heritage

Morroco tours to Fez

In Fez , the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco , you are transported back in time. The city’s ancient walled medina, Fes el Bali, is a preserved relic of medieval architecture, filled with narrow, winding alleys that echo with the sounds of metal workers and tanners.

As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the medina is one of the world’s largest urban pedestrian zones and offers an unfiltered glimpse into the intricacies of Moroccan craftsmanship.

The historic madrasas, like Bou Inania and Al Attarine , showcase the Islamic architectural brilliance with their intricate tile work and ornate wood carvings.

These schools are cornerstones of the city’s academic past and present a not-to-miss experience for history enthusiasts.

The medina’s tanneries , with their colorful dye pits and traditional methods, provide a window into the ancient practices that are still in use today, making Fez a key destination for those interested in the history of Moroccan artisan industries.

Amazigh Culture: Immersive Experiences

Morroco tours to Sahara

No tour of Morocco is complete without a venture into the Sahara Desert . This vast landscape offers more than just scenic dune views—it is a gateway to understanding the nomadic Berber culture that has thrived in this harsh environment for centuries.

T he desert camps are set up to give travelers a taste of Berber life , from traditional music and dance to food and storytelling under the stars.

The journey often begins with a camel ride from Merzouga or M’Hamid , gateways to the Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga dunes respectively.

These rides provide an authentic mode of transportation used by the Berbers for millennia. The interaction with the camel drivers, often local Berbers, enriches the travel experience, offering personal stories and insights into the challenges and beauties of desert life.

Day 5: Meknes – Fes Sightseeing

After breakfast in your riad, we will drive to Fes where you will start exploring the oldest city in Morocco, walking in its alleys and small streets. Our visit starts by touring the Royal Palace gate, the Jewish headquarter, the first Mellah ever built in Morocco – during the 16th century.

We will ensure that you visit all Fassi sites of cultural and historical interest including the famous Al Qaraouine University – the oldest in the region, the Tanneries, the Attarine museum, and the Mulay Idriss mausoleum. After lunch, you will visit the tiles cooperative and then experience a wonderful panoramic view over the whole Medina of Fes.

Day 6: Free morning in Fes and drive to Midelt in the afternoon

On day 6 of your Grand Tour of Morocco, you will have a free morning in Fes. At mid-day, you will leave Fes travelling towards Ifran – a beautiful mountains village, known as “the Switzerland of Morocco”. Then, we continue to Midelt. During this journey, you’ll experience glimpses of the Middle Atlas and Higher Atlas mountains.

Stopping at Azrou, a Berber village in the middle of the famous cedar forest – the largest in Morocco – you may see Barbary apes. After sometime within the forest, your journey continues to Midelt along the magnificent hills and mountains of the Atlas. In Midelt, you will stay the night in a hotel.

Day 7: Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga – Camel ride and night in a camp

We will be driving through the fascinating Tiz Ntalghamt pass and the Ziz Gorge, taking in views of the High Atlas plateau. You’ll notice how the scenery changes to reveal hints of the desert as you approach the city of Errachidia where you will have lunch and enjoy the Berber hospitality.

Afterward, you will travel along the luxuriant Ziz Valley where we would stop for panoramic views on the way to Erfoud. We arrive at Merzouga in the afternoon. You’ll be welcomed with a glass of mint tea before you start your camel ride . In a tent in a desert camp, you will spend the night under a starry sky.

Day 8: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

After breakfast, you will return by camel to the 4x4s and head back to Erfoud. From Erfoud, you set out behind the High Atlas Mountains en route to the Todra Gorges. In the afternoon, you will take a walk up in the towering Todra Gorges (600 ft high).

Day 9: Dades Gorge – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After an early breakfast, you will set off towards the High Atlas Mountains via Ouarzazate. Tucked away in the High Atlas Mountains, it is one of the jewels of Morocco…Kasbah Ait Benhaddou.

This setting has been used for more films than any other location in Morocco; films including, Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth, and recently The Gladiator were filmed there. Lunch can be taken at Ait BenHaddou. In the afternoon, you will head over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech where you will spend the night in a Riad.

The tour will end with an exploration of the souk (market) lined with fresh fruit, mounds of spices, intricately woven Berber carpets and many other art objects of Morocco.

You will have free evening in which you can do whatever you please. Dinner and an overnight stay will be in a Riad.

Day 11: Marrakech – Essaouira

The hustle and bustle of Marrakech quickly slip away as you enter into the peace and beauty that is Essaouira on day 11 of the Grand Tour of Morocco. This ancient citadel on the West Atlantic coast of Africa means “wall” in the Berber language, and you’ll soon discover why.

Travelers from all over the world come here to experience the very special weather and explore its diverse and unique history. As we leave Marrakech, we pass through lush valleys filled with orange groves, ancient olive trees, and working farms as we drive to the coast.

Day 12: Free day to Explore Essaouira

On our Grand Tour of Morocco, you have a free day in Essaouira where you get the chance to wander the ancient streets and imagine what life has come before us. The streets have a genuinely Portuguese feel after they renamed the city in the 16th century and used it as a port city of their own.

Here, you can dine on fish straight out of the sea at any of the local restaurants. You can even have a camel ride on the beach where you can see the beautiful sunset. An overnight stay awaits you in a Riad.

Day 13: Essaouira – Casablanca

After breakfast in the Riad, we take the coast road to Casablanca to visit to the Hassan II Mosque. Dinner will be served a Riad where we will also spend our last night of the Grand Tour of Morocco.

Morocco - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Morocco is an exotic country - from ancient towns to chaotic cities, from remote villages to gorgeous coast, there are so many sights to see.

Morocco is an exotic country that never stops amazing you with its sights and surrounds. From ancient towns to chaotic cities, from remote villages to gorgeous coastal resorts, the country presents a variety of things to see and do that are sure to cater to all kinds of travelers.

Beautiful golden sand beaches, a long coastline that borders the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, four majestic mountains, vast open expanses of the great Sahara Desert, exotic vineyards and cascading rivers; some of the many beautiful things a tour to Morocco willoffer. Once you’re done with that natural beauty, you can also choose from urban explorations, desert towns such as Ouarzazate (yes, this is the town featured in movies like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Kingdom of Heaven).

Tour Highlights

  • Stroll the blue streets of Chefchaouen
  • Ride a camel through the Sahara Desert
  • Shop in the leather bazaar in old Fes
  • Watch snake charmers at the Djemma el Fna square in Marrakech
  • Relax in the steam bath of a traditional hammam

Travel Tips

  • Exchanging money before your trip can be difficult due to Morocco’s currency laws that prevent you from bringing more than 1000 Moroccan Dirhams in or out of the country (the equivalent of about US$106). Set aside time at the airport upon arrival to exchange your currency.
  • Visitors, like Moroccans, are expected to dress conservatively, especially women. Cover your shoulders, knees and chest as much as possible.
  • Always ask permission before taking photographs of locals, particularly in rural areas. Some believe cameras can capture a person’s soul using black magic, so asking is always a respectful gesture.
  • Be sure to pack layers, as temperatures can drop drastically at night, particularly in the winter. At the same time, daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in the summer!
  • As a Muslim country, Friday is the weekly holy day in Morocco. Many shops will be closed on Fridays (particularly after midday) so locals can attend prayer, so buy what you need beforehand.

Morocco has seasonal weather so please do check up on the  best time to visit Morocco  before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Morocco, do check out our Morocco Travel Guide for more information.

Morocco — Top destinations to visit

  • Blast through the Moroccan Sahara Dunes:  Covering 30 percent of the African continent, the Sahara Desert is one of Morocco’s top attractions. Explore the Moroccan Sahara Desert as there are endless adventures and activities you can enjoy in this sea of sand. From multi-day camel treks and sandboarding through the shifting dunes to spending nights beneath the stars at a Berber desert camp, the Sahara is a smorgasbord of fun adventures.
  • Visit ancient tanneries in Fez: The ancient art of tanning leather in Fez has changed little since the 11th century. The unmistakable smell of the tannery pits floats in the air for miles. Visit Fez which is home to three vast tanneries that create one of Morocco’s most extraordinary sights. The city’s largest and oldest tannery is the Chouara Tannery. Located in the Fes el Bali near the Saffarin Madrasa, the facility is a sight to behold, with its hundreds of stone vats filled with leather. You will be given a sprig of mint to place in your nose to mask the smell but be prepared for an assault on the senses. A guide will take you through the tannery, and you will be able to get up close to watch the whole medieval process.
  • Shop for souvenirs at Jemaa el-Fna Marrakech: Located in the heart of Marrakech’s ancient medina (old city), Jemma el-Fna is a vibrant, bustling marketplace and the beating heart of the city. Dating back to the 11th century, the square is one of the main cultural spaces in Marrakesh and has been designated as a Unesco Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This is the place to find a range of treasures, from leather goods and brass cups to handmade jewelry. In the evening, the square comes alive with storytellers, snake charmers, Chleuh dancing boys, magicians, and traditional medicine men. But do keep your wits about you and avoid carrying valuables when visiting Marrakech .
  • Wander the Blue Alleys of Chefchaouen:  Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco, explore the city of Chefchaouen , or Chaouen is famous for its extraordinary blue-hued buildings. Founded in 1471, the city only began to turn blue in 1492 when Jewish immigrants settled in the city and brought a tradition of painting buildings blue. Wander around the cobblestone lanes and marvel at the beauty of the blue buildings. Visit the 15th-century fortress of Kasbah with its red walls and dark dungeons. Sunrise and sunset are magical times of the day in this city. Be sure to capture them with your camera. Visit the pretty Ras El Maa waterfall for a cool dip in the fresh mountain water.
  • Relax in a Casablanca beach resort:  Kick back and relax at one of the luxurious beach resorts while you travel to Casablanca . This cosmopolitan city is often overlooked in favor of Marrakech, but it has so much to offer and beautiful beaches are just one of them. Boasting beautiful views of the ocean, most resorts here have gorgeous swimming pools, lush tropical gardens, and deluxe spas. You will also find fantastic restaurants serving top-notch local cuisine and buzzing bars.
  • Relish the magnificent architecture of Rabat: Explore Rabat , the capital of Morocco which is known for its striking and unusual architecture, and if you are a lover of design, then wandering around the city is a must. Blending ancient history and striking modernity, the city is home to an eclectic mix of Arabic and Western architecture ranging from the Abul Hassan Medersa dating back to the 1300s to the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Rabat built in 1921. More information about Morocco

A  holiday to Morocco  is an adventure into a country of rich landscapes. From its famous fortified villages, better known as  kasbah , its huge ocher-colored dunes of the  Sahara , the green of its large palm groves and high snow-capped mountains, to its labyrinth-like  medinas  and  bazaars .  Below, we show you the reasons why choose a  trip to Morocco  is worth it.

Geography of Morocco

The Kingdom of  Morocco  is located in the northwest of the  African  continent, in the so-called  Maghreb r egion. It borders the  Mediterranean Sea  to the north,  Algeria  to the East, the  Sahrawi Arab Republic  to the south and the  Atlantic Ocean  to the west. The capital is  Rabat,  but the most populated city is the famously immortalized  Casablanca.

Morocco’s  almost  36 million  inhabitants are distributed in the  16 regions  in which the country is divided. These, in turn, are subdivided into  27 prefectures  and  45 provinces.   Arabs  and  Berbers  represent the majority of the population, although there is also an important  Jewish  community.

The country has two major mountain systems: the  Rif , which borders the  Mediterranean  coast, from the  Muluya River  to the  Strait of Gibraltar  and whose highest peak is  Mount Tidighine  at  2452  metres; and the  Atlas  mountain range, a must visit on any  tour to Morocco , formed of three mountainous massifs: the  Great Atlas  to the south, where the highest mountain in the country is found, the  Central   Atlas  and the  Anti Atlas  that reaches out to the  Atlantic  coast.

Between the  Rif  and the  Central Atlas  stretches the valley of  Sebú.  To the east of the country are the  High Plateaus a nd to the south the great desert of the  Sahara.  The most important rivers are the  Oum-er-Rbia  and the  Sebú,  which flow into the  Atlantic  and the  Muluya , which flows into the  Mediterranean.

The official language is  Arabic  whilst the  Berber  languages of  Tarifit, Tashelhit  and  Tamazight,  are spoken in the  Souss , the  Rif  and the  Atlas.  Most Moroccans speak  French , which is used commercially and there is also a small  Spanish -speaking population.

Islam  is the official religion and  98.3  percent of the population is  Sunni Muslim,  with the king being the highest authority.

The country is a constitutional monarchy with an elected Parliament.  King Mohamed VI  holds broad executive powers and directs military forces.

In the economic context, income comes from services, agriculture, and the mining industry, phosphate, food, leather, textiles, and tourism, with infrastructures prepared to accommodate countless organized travel options and package holidays, from upscale resorts to cozy  medina riads.

The climate varies between the desert of the south, the  Mediterranean  of the north and the continental of the interior, with temperatures ranging between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius, although in certain areas of the country it can occasionally reach up to 50 degrees.

The flora of  Morocco  is one of the richest in North Africa with some  4200  species. It is the country with the largest forests in the  Maghreb,  which contain cork oaks, holm oaks, conifers, junipers, cedars, firs, pines, argan, thorns, while in the arid zones there are  date palms . As for the wildlife, there are foxes, rabbits, otters, squirrels, gazelles, wild boars, baboons, panthers, ibis hermits, and horned vipers.

History of Morocco

Morocco is an ancient nation and as such, it has a long and fascinating history. The human presence in the territory dates from the year  8000 BC . Since then, a long list of communities has left their marks on the land. Fishermen and breeders of Saharan horses arrived around  2500 BC,  joining the indigenous populations .  At the end of  800 BC,   Phoenicians  and  Africans  arrived from the East and the  Romans  eventually invaded in the  4th century BC . Continuous challenges and rebellions on the part of the  Berbers  towards the  Roman Empire  resulted in the expulsion of  Romans  in the  5th century .  Vandals, Visigoths , and  Byzantines  succeeded the  Romans,  although the lands of the high mountains were always dominated by the  Berbers.

In the  7th century , the indigenous  Berbers, Jews,  and  Christian  converts, were aware of the new religion founded by  Mohammed bin Abu Talib,  the prophet  Muhammad , who revealed that there is only one God and that believers share the common duty of submitting to his divine will. Following his death, in the year  632 ,  Islam  spread to central  Asia  and western  Africa.

The  Umayyad  leader  Uqba bin Nafi  reached the  Atlantic  coast of  Morocco  in  682  but failed to break the  Berbers . It took time and compatibility with the concepts put forward by  Muhammad , which emphasized the duty, courage, and loyalty of the group, which led to the conversion of many in  Morocco  to  Islam . Through diplomacy, the  Umayyads  managed to impose themselves in the country in the  8th century,  although in the middle of the century they were exiled and the new leaders dominated the trade of silver, gold, and slaves.

In the year  786  the descendant of Muhammad,  Idris I,  fled to  Morocco , was appointed imam or religious leader by the  Berbers,  unified the north of the country and converted  Fez  into the capital. Their descendants expanded the power of the dynasty in the north of the country and part of  Europe .

Meanwhile in the south, a detractor prophet established an illegitimate  Islam , and the behavior of the military in the area, caused a dissatisfaction that led to the emergence of the  Sanhajas,  a  Berber  tribe of tenacious warriors from the Sahara, who created the dynasty of the  Almoravids  with its capital in Marrakech, which was later razed by the  Almohad Berbers  in  1147 , ending with the power falling into the hands of the successors of  Emir Ben Ali Ben Youssef.

The  Almohad  defeat came in  1269  at the hands of the  Berbers  who established the  Benimerin  dynasty, during which  madrasas  were built in the important cities and whose empire was devastated by the plague and by the continued assassinations of the leaders at the hands of their advisers. From  1420,  the  Wattasíes  began to exercise control and in  1465  the  last Sultan Merinid Abd al-Haqq  was killed. In spite of everything, they were not able to consolidate their power, as the  Portuguese  possessed dominion over the main ports of the country by the beginning of the  16th century .  Melilla  was conquered by the  Spaniards  in  1497.  The  Berber Saadians  of the  Draa Valley  fought against the  Lusos,  restoring internal trade and  European  markets which supplied sugar, ivory, gold, and slaves.  The Saadian dynasty  ruled the south until  1554  and the entire territory until the death of  Sultan Ahmad el Abbas  in  1659 . The indulgent nature of the  Alaouite Kingdom  allowed  Jews  to demarcate their own neighborhoods or  mellah  in several of the cities.

The sixth Sa'did Sultan,  Ahmad I al-Mansur,  was the most famous of the dynasty. He built the great palace of  Marrakech  and participated in alliances with  Christian  economies until his death in  1603 . The  civil war  of 1620 to 1627 led to the fall of the  Saadians  and the arrival of  Alawites,  descendants of the illustrious  Muhammad . The reign of the second ruler,  Mulay Ismail , was based on despotism and cruelty, and the capital was moved to Meknes. The  Alawi  dynasty lasted until the  twentieth century.

France  allied with the  Berbers  around  1830  and  Spain  took over some northern cities such as  Ceuta . In  1880 ,  Europeans  and  Americans  established duty-free trade in  Tangier . Under the Sultanate, the  Algeciras Conference  was held in  1906 , in which it was agreed to hand over the management of banks, customs and  Moroccan  policy to  France  and with the  Treaty of Fez  in  1912 , the country became a  French protectorate.

In  1944,  the  Independence Party  demanded the end of the  French  mandate with the support of the  United States  and the  United Kingdom .  France  allowed the king to return to his country in  1955  and independence was achieved in  1956.

The dissatisfaction of  Moroccan  society for inequality between rich and poor and tax burdens, together with half political unrest, led to large protests in  Casablanca  in  1981 , to which the Government responded with violent repression that resulted in deaths and imprisonment. But popular activist pressures led the king to found the  Equity and Reconciliation Commission  with the aim of investigating the human rights abuses that occurred during his reign. His successor since  1999  and until today,  Mohammed VI , guaranteed the repair of the damage caused to the victims of the so-called  "Years of Lead"  by means of indemnities. The monarch has made great democratic changes, but the  Casablanca  attacks of  2003  resulted in the deduction of some civil liberties.

The traces of a past of emperors, warriors, viziers, sultans, and settlers, has created a social fabric that surprises the gaze of the western traveler. A  tour to Morocco  is the best way to gain insight into the complex history of this country.

Why is Morocco Africa’s most visited country?

The light falls on  Morocco  in a unique way, so that the colors warmth and harmony of the landscapes are unlike those seen anywhere else. From the pure and exciting tones of nature, infinite color combinations are born with which towns and cities have integrated themselves.

Morocco  exhibits pure life, showing itself in all its splendor amidst the bustle of its busy and nocturnal streets and squares. Away from the noise, the deafening silence of the desert, a treasure of the country, is where you can experience the most exciting adventures.

A package holiday to Morocco  will give you the opportunity to experience many things, from finding yourself lost in labyrinthine  medinas ; counting millions of stars in the cold nights of the desert; entering the arid landscapes of mountain ranges; smelling the aroma of  mint tea  and spices; admiring the iconic  belly dance ; being captivated by the majestic architecture of arches, stuccos, mosaics and carved wood of the imposing monuments to listening to the eternal call to prayer.

Morocco  is the pearl of  North Africa  and the jewel of the  Arab  world.  Morocco  is not a mirage, it is a fantastically real illusion.

Morocco Guided Tours & Guided Vacations

EXPERIENCE WITH TAUCK

A day of immersion in Berber culture and cuisine, including dining, music, and entertainment under desert tent, and a camel ride

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

Lunch in a terraced home in Moulay Idriss near the ruins at Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Lunch at Rick's Cafe in Casablanca, modeled on the one in the film Casablanca

Exclusive dinners in beautiful riads in Fes – rooftop farewell reception (weather permitting) in Marrakech

Choice of a Moroccan cooking class, a photography tour of coastal gem Essaouira, or a pampering hammam spa treatment

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Experiences of a lifetime

Experience the heart of Morocco, Africa at Europe's doorstep… ancient cities, medinas, kasbahs, and souks… windswept coastline and desert treasures… on a 10-day journey through a timeless land...

Visit the leather tanneries of fes, a trip through time at the ancient leather tanneries of fes.

Like an artist's tray of paints, the huge vats of dyes that decorate the urban landscape around the redolent tanneries of Fes are awe-inspiring... no less than the processes the tanners use to dye and dry leather, virtually unchanged since medieval times. The tanners' tools include water, limestone, pigeon droppings, and their bare feet and hands to knead and dye the leather to its required consistency, which may eventually grace the souks of the medina as exquisite purses and slippers.

Dinner in the desert, Berber-style

Travel by 4x4 vehicle to a berber-style dinner in a desert camp.

In the desert outside Marrakech, ancient Berber villages preserve time-honored folkways and rituals – like the traditional Moroccan tea ceremony – that have survived for centuries. Ride aboard a 4x4 vehicle to one of these villages for tea with the village chief and a crash-course in Berber culture. Then it's on to our desert camp, where dinner is served Berber-style under a tent with musical entertainment. Experience local customs like riding a camel... smoking shisha (using a hubbly-bubbly pipe, or hookah, to smoke flavored tobacco)... or having your hands or feet decorated with traditional henna designs!

Four Seasons Resort Marrakech

Nights 6, 7, 8 and 9

Capturing the magic of Marrakech...

Imagine a place where you can lose yourself in the magic of Marrakech from the comfort of a luxury resort. A place where Moorish gardens surround silvery swimming pools... where jasmine and roses perfume the air... where exotic experiences are part of daily life and where your wish is our pleasure. Imagine Four Seasons Resort Marrakech... where traditional values and contemporary comforts unite.

Tauck filled every day with the variety and culture of the country we enjoy and have come to expect. The architecture was amazing and the food was fabulous!

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Morocco; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Morocco to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Morocco. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

To enjoy this active tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. We recommend that you pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in to appreciate fully what Morocco has to offer.

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two-to-three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty. Your journey is moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures and extended motorcoach travel.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

It's hot and sunny for most of the year in Morocco. During the peak summer months it gets uncomfortably hot especially in Marrakech, Fes and southwest Morocco. Rabat and Casablanca are a bit more comfortable in the peak of summer because they benefit from a cooler ocean breeze.

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

As Morocco is a Muslim country, dressing modestly will make both you and the people you meet on your travels more comfortable.  Generally this means covering the shoulders and knees.  Women will need to cover their hair only when we visit the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.  Scarves will be provided on the tour.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Morocco:

  • Cotton, cotton/synthetic and linen clothing
  • Light weight shirts, pants, capri pants and dresses
  • Light jacket or sweater
  • Jacket and tie and casually-elegant attire for fine dining
  • Comfortable walking shoes that will work well on uneven or cobblestone pavement
  • Shoes will only need to be removed when the tour visits the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.  Please bring at least one pair of socks for this visit.
  • Hat (a wide brimmed hat is recommended)
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Soap leaves, travel packets of tissues, handkerchiefs and hand sanitizer
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

About this trip

Welcome friends! This trip has been curated specially for you with much love and excitement. It is a trip that I have taken three times—twice alone and once with a dear friend.

This journey will be eye-opening and life-changing in small and great ways. Morocco is a land of contrast and contradiction, and your senses will easily get overloaded, as will your emotions at times. That is the beauty of travel. It's impossible to remain indifferent or a spectator.

The people and places we will visit together are dear to my heart, and I hope you too will feel the same after this experience.

I'm not an official guide or historian. I can't answer the typical questions one might wonder about when visiting Morocco. So, what I will do is send you details of the places we will visit ahead of time, so those who are curious can read up on them before arrival.

Thanks for your trust in me and for joining me on this amazing journey. Great memories await!

What’s included

  • Airport Meet Up I will personally meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel.
  • Hotel stays 10 nights hotel with private bathroom & WiFi. All with breakfast included, and some with dinner as well.
  • Cultural Experience On Monday, Sept. 4, we will have a guided tour of a 16th century kasbah in the middle of an oasis. And in the evening, a live, show of traditional music.
  • A Moroccan Welcome On the afternoon of our first full day - Friday Sept.1 -we have a private Gnawa music concert, Moroccan tea and sweets.
  • Private Guided Tour Half-day, private guided tour of selected monuments in Marrakech on Saturday morning, September 2.
  • Live Music Event On Saturday evening, September 2, we will go to a local Café to experience a dynamic, traditional all-female band.
  • Sahara Desert A trip into the desert in a 4x4 across the sand dunes. Camel ride up the highest dune for sunset. Overnight in desert camp. Live music. Dinner & breakfast..

What’s not included

  • Lunchs and Dinners In most places, diner will be included, but not in some. Snacks, beverages and souveniers are not included.

Marhaba/Welcome to Morocco!

We'll arrive and get settled in.

Depending on the time of everyone's arrival, I'll do my best to personally meet everyone at the airport. If anyone has an arrival time past 10 p.m., I'll arrange for a driver to meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel.

Mostly, this day is for recovering from the long trip and getting heads, hearts, and souls aligned, rested, and ready for the days ahead.

We will spend the first three nights in Marrakech, then head out towards the desert on September 3.

morocco trips 2023

On September 3, we will begin our journey toward the desert. We'll leave the hassle and hustle of Marrakech behind and cross the Atlas Mountains to reach Tamnougalt by evening, where we will spend two nights.

Tamnougalt is a kasbah and date palm oasis located in the Draa River valley in Morocco.

In addition to stopping for lunch, we will most likely stop several more times along the way because the scenery is magnificent and there are photo ops around every turn.

morocco trips 2023

In the oasis town of Tamnougalt, we will spend two nights/days in a 16th-century kasbah.

This is a spectacular place. It's like traveling back to a time full of mystery and ancient traditions. Here we will tour the kasbah, experience live, traditional, local music, eat delicious food, and be treated like family.

We'll be in the middle of an oasis, so it's a peaceful, quiet contrast to Marrakech. There will be time to visit the neighboring town, market, and shops, as well as take walks through the oasis.

The Tajine cooking class will take place here as an add-on.

morocco trips 2023

Ah, what can I say about this day? No words can describe the experience you're going to have!

We'll leave Tamnougalt today and head towards a small town at the edge of the desert, M'Hamid El Ghizlane. There we will ditch our van for a 4x4 and meet our desert guide, who will take us to our desert camp.

I don't want to say much more about this part of the trip. Just open your heart and mind and let your soul explode.

morocco trips 2023

After a starry night beneath the desert sky, we'll head back to reality. We'll pick up our van, say 'shukran' (thank you) to our desert guide, and head off to the town of Zagora.

Zagora is called “The Desert Gate” because it’s one of the last towns in Morocco before the start of the Sahara Desert. Camel caravans used to stop at Zagora before going to Timbuktu, Mali. It would take 52 days to get there!

We'll see if the sign is still there and have an IG moment :-)

We'll also visit the 'souk' (traditional market), which is the largest traditional market in Morocco. Be prepared to haggle your life away! This will be a great place to pick up some unique and original gifts for yourself and others.

We'll spend the night here.

morocco trips 2023

This ancient fortified city may look familiar to you. The scene in which Maximus is sold to Proximo in the movie Gladiator was shot in Aït-Ben-Haddou.

It was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.

We'll have plenty of time to wander around this spectacular place and take in its sights, smells, and sounds. There's some good shopping to be done here as well. There are official guided tours, so if you are interested, these can be arranged.

We'll be spending one night in the area, then heading back to Marrakech in the morning.

" Are you not entertained? ” ― Maximus

morocco trips 2023

On these last two days in Marrakech, there will be time to wrap up any sightseeing or shopping you may not have done on the first days here.

Also, there is the option of a half-day trip to the nearby Berber villages and a meal with a local family (dear friends of mine). That can be discussed and decided once we are there.

I like to end this trip with a few hours at the hammam (Arab spa). This is an add-on and will need to be booked in advance. So let me know if you're interested, and I'll arrange it.

“To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” – Danny Kaye

As our adventure comes to a close, I hope that the experience has left a positive imprint on your soul and that you feel enriched for the time you've spent in Morocco.

I wish you safe travels to your next destination and I hope our paths will cross again in the future, perhaps even for another Journey Beyond Destination.

Michael February Is Still in Morocco For Part Two of Series

morocco trips 2023

The Inertia

Mikey is still in Morocco. Michael February recently released part two of his series of edits from a recent trip to North Africa. Dubbed MOROCCO (SIDE B), the film features the boundary-breaking South African’s inimitable style in enviable Atlantic surf.

The trip came during a big year for February. In July, he was the subject of a heartfelt and introspective New York Times-produced profile that examined his personal history, from growing up in post-apartheid South Africa to becoming the first black South African surfer on the Championship Tour. More recently, he was living it up in the Maldives, facing off against Taj Burrow in “ the world’s most luxurious surfing event .” With this Morocco series, he finds yet another unique canvas for his signature style.

The video is the second of three installments. Part one released last Tuesday and part three will drop next week. The film was produced by February’s company Spearhead Unlimited and directed by Ian Thurtell.

Only the best. We promise.
