Don’t be late for the Manila Bay Dinner Cruise by Sun Cruises

manila bay cruise by sun cruises

Manila Bay is a natural harbour in Manila that’s been facilitating trade and commerce between the Philippines and its neighbouring countries. It also serves as a jumping-off point for Corregidor and other nearby islands ripe for adventure . A growing number of locals and tourists prefer to end a day of sightseeing or shopping around the area to catch a spectacular view of the sunset. A unique way to do this is through the Manila Bay Dinner Cruise by Sun Cruises.

The idea of a dinner cruise is often tagged as “expensive”. It is also romantic, intimate, and truly special. I remember my brother-in-law proposed to my sister aboard a cruise ferry, also along Manila Bay, and I once celebrated an anniversary on a houseboat…

So, when I received the invite from Sun Cruises to experience a dinner cruise aboard the M/V Spirit of Manila, I was ecstatic… I was overjoyed on the day of the cruise… And a little late for boarding!

IN THIS POST

☑  Boarding ☑  Buffet Dinner ☑  Fireworks Display ☑  Rates and Schedule ☑  Reservations

manila bay cruise by sun cruises

Don’t be late!

The boarding time is at 5:30 PM. The ferry sails at 6 PM sharp.

In my experience, it is better to arrive at 5 PM at the Esplanade Seaside Terminal so as to avoid getting stuck in traffic along EDSA going to SM MOA Global Rotonda.

My first mistake was to arrive at MRT TAFT station at 5PM. I should’ve known better than anyone else never to brave EDSA during the rush hour… My second mistake was not reading carefully (or maybe understanding) the exact location of the ferry terminal. So this oversight led me to run 1.2 km in heels to make it to the sailing time.

(You don’t want to follow this schedule unless you want to end up ruining your curls and wedge shoes)

5:00 PM Arrived at MRT Taft Station

5:27 PM Stuck in traffic by the SM MOA Global Rotonda

5:46 PM Got off at the bus stop

5:52 PM Called the group I was near Seafood Island

6:02 PM Called the group I was near Vikings

6:10 PM I FINALLY boarded***

***My apologies to the other passengers on board

manila bay cruise by sun cruises

[message] Boarding

If I were a regular passenger, I wouldn’t have been able to make it since cruisers need to check-in before the boarding time just like in any other ferry rides.

Again, you should be at the Esplanade Seaside Terminal at around 5PM. Proceed to the Check-in counter, pay the cruise fee and a PHP 30 terminal fee. The staff will give you an identification sticker that should be placed on your chest all throughout the cruise. Do not lose this to avoid any problems.

At 5:30 PM, prepare to board the ferry. Follow signs and staff members to board your Sun Cruise ferry right away.

You may choose to settle in the lower deck of the ferry with chairs and tables close to the buffet station and also close to the restroom. But I recommend you stay on the upper deck for the best view and rather cooler experience. The live band is also on the upper deck serenading the guests during the one and a half hour cruise.

While waiting to sail, make the most of the golden hour and take photos with the Manila skyline as your backdrop. You can also enjoy the changing hues of the horizon with a cool drink on your hand as the sun slowly sets down.

Sail we go…

As soon as we started sailing, the ambience in the upper deck transformed. The music turned up. The lights became softer. I also felt it got cooler. Well, I was out of breath when I boarded so the breeze must have calmed me down.

I’ve always loved the wind breeze on my hair and against my face. Not only that it refreshes but also it reminds me a great deal of my childhood. Those times I was on top of tall trees, jumping from one branch to another like a proper monkey; or several rollercoaster rides with my sister. We were sitting in the front row. Those were ultimately fun memories…

Although I am fond of blasting speed, I still appreciate a slow cruise. That said, I thought you’d wanna know the ferry moves very subtly. It’s obviously unlike that speedboat I took in the Maldives wherein one passenger literally threw it all out because of its speed. This cruise won’t in any way make you feel seasick. In fact, you can move around (even in high heels), take photos, grab your food from the lower deck, take a short trip to the comfort room, and back to your table no sweat.

If in case you experience any difficulty moving around, the crew are all prepared to give a hand and assist you. Speaking of the staff, I must commend all the crew for being helpful, professional and courteous at all times.

[message] Dinner Buffet

The dinner might not be gourmet, but decent courses were served. The selections during our cruise: fish fillet with zesty lime sauce, baked chicken with pepper sauce, callos, roast pork with balsamic glaze, local salad, onion soup, steamed rice, bread, cupcakes.

If you have a big appetite, you can eat as much as you want. In my case, I loved (and ate much of) the fish fillet, salad, and cupcakes.

The drinks served were water and iced tea. You can request for soda in can or wine. I had a glass of red wine.

While we were enjoying our dinner, the live band played acoustic hits. They also invited anyone who would like to join them singing or dancing. Some passengers danced. It was entertaining.

Personally, I feel proud of the fact that we have this kind of cruise to offer to people visiting Manila. For one, the night scene surrounding the bay is amusing. Actually, the lights from the infrastructure and establishments plus the February breeze reminded me of the time we took a  yakatabune or Japanese houseboat and had a dinner cruise in Tokyo . I’m happy to say I could enjoy this cruise as much as I did aboard that foreign houseboat…

Sun Cruises has been working on improving their cruise over the past three years and until now they continue to make their facilities and services better for the satisfaction of their guests. And they are doing a great job!

[message] Fireworks Display

Before the fireworks display, I already thought the dinner, the ambience, and the view from the ferry were already amazing. But the fireworks happened!!! Wow! What a romantic way to start the love month !!!

I really love that this dinner cruise gives a spectacular view of fireworks on Saturdays. I was able to capture decent photos as you can see below:

The secret biannual cruise bargain, with winter sun voyages from £62 per day

Chase the sun by joining one of these trips and you'll also save money on the way.

Celebrity soltice Honolulu to Sydney Sydney Image: Celebrity Cruises https://www.celebritycruisescontent.com/

Just as holidaymakers chase the sunshine, so do cruise ships. When the weather turns chilly, repositioning voyages take vessels from one part of the world to another for the start of a new season. Typically this tends to be in autumn and spring, when ships often move between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean .

Eight great no-fly cruises, sailing from UK ports

Eight great no-fly cruises, sailing from UK ports

Just like relocation car rentals, joining one of these strategic journeys can be a cost-effective way to travel as lines look to fill empty cabins. The cost of a “repo” sailing is significantly lower than that of your standard cruise holiday .

Itineraries are point-to-point rather than round-trip. They are typically transatlantic, although occasionally ships stay in one region and simply change their home port.

Since repositioning cruises often cross oceans, they tend to be longer than regular voyages and feature several sea days – giving a chance to read a book by the pool, spend a day in the spa , learn a new skill or attend on-board enrichment lectures.

If you’re looking for a relaxing escape that is also great value, here are eight to consider this autumn or next year.

Honolulu to Sydney

Sunshine beckons on Celebrity Cruises’ 17-night Tahitian Treasures voyage, on board the 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice . Departing from Honolulu – the home of sea, surf and Hawaiian shirts – the sailing features six more stops: Mo’orea, Papeete and Raiatea (French Polynesia); Auckland and the Bay Of Islands (New Zealand); and, of course, Sydney, with its iconic buildings and beaches.

In between, there will be plenty of time – 11 sea days – to play deck games or soak up the sun on the Lawn Club’s half-acre of fresh grass.

Departs 1 October. From £1,272pp excluding flights, celebritycruises.com

Lisbon to Miami

For a welcome burst of winter sun, savvy travellers can get a dose of vitamin D in a diverse range of locations on Azamara’s 12-night Onward to Florida Voyage.

Departing from Lisbon, the boutique cruise line’s ship will call at Horta – one of the jewels of the Azores – and the pink-beach island of Bermuda before disembarking in Miami, Florida. Three sea days ensure you can enjoy everything that the 684-passenger Onward , Azamara’s newest ship, has to offer.

Departs 13 November. From £1,129pp, excluding flights, azamara.com

Seabourn 'Encore' Pool Deck Image: Seabourn www.seabourn.com https://www.cruiseimagelibrary.com/c/z1afox5j

Kobe to California

Even ultra-luxury lines offer cheaper repositioning cruises: Seabourn has shaved about 50 per cent off the price of its 25-day Japan & Hawaiian Islands Pacific Crossing cruise. Fares start at £7,199pp for a veranda suite replete with a marble bathroom containing Molton Brown toiletries.

Fares include all entertainment, gratuities, dining and drinks – meaning you can sip champagne as you cross the international date line or savour caviar upon your return from a shore excursion in Kauai, Hawaii’s garden isle, without worrying about the bill.

Bridgetown to Southampton

A Caribbean cruise is always tempting, especially on a good deal – and P&O Cruises’ Transatlantic Caribbean adventure on board Britannia offers just that. Fares for the 13-night sailing start at £1,099pp, including a flight from London to Bridgetown, plus an on board spend of up to £800 per cabin.

Stops include St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, and Antigua. Meanwhile, you can shop for souvenirs until you drop as there are no airport scales to contend with on return to Southampton.

Departs 21 March 2025. From £1,099 with ROL Cruise, including a flight from London to Bridgetown, rolcruise.co.uk

Florida to Dover

Setting sail from lively Fort Lauderdale, a two-week transatlantic Cultural Crossing cruise with Holland America calls at Bermuda, the English seaside towns of Falmouth and Weymouth, and Paris , before arriving on the Kent coast.

On board, there’s plenty of choice on how to fill long days at sea – from admiring the 2,666-passenger Nieuw Statendam ’s £3m art collection to playing pickleball with new friends and enjoying classic soul and rock’n’roll in BB King’s Blues Club.

Departs 5 April 2025. From £2,219pp, excluding flights, but including a $200 (£150) on-board spend, plus the ‘Have It All’ package, which includes a drinks, speciality dining, complimentary shore excursions and WiFi access, hollandamerica.com

Newcastle to Valencia

It’s possible to start your holiday close to home by boarding Balmoral , Fred Olsen Cruise Line’s smallest ship, in Newcastle. On the 12-night Spanish Colours & Cultures cruise, you’ll sail to Spanish big hitters such as Barcelona, Ibiza and Valencia. This is a relatively port-intensive repositioning cruise featuring only four full sea days – although, if you’re new to cruises, that’s still enough to give you a proper sense of life at sea.

Departs 15 September 2025. From £1,699pp including a return flight to either Stansted or Manchester, fredolsencruises.com

Balmoral Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Image: Fred Olsen https://media.fredolsencruises.com/

Pick up an incredible bargain on a 14-night Carnival cruise from Barcelona to Orlando. Costing just £870pp – £62pp per day – it includes accommodation, theatre shows, children’s clubs, all meals on board (save for speciality dining) and soft drinks, as well as $50 to spend.

The cruise calls at Málaga, sun-soaked Seville, Tenerife and Celebration Key – Carnival’s new private island resort in the Bahamas, which is scheduled to welcome its first passengers in July.

Departs 16 October 2025. From £870pp, excluding flights, carnival.com

Buenos Aires to Barcelona

If you fancy learning how to tango in Buenos Aires or samba in Rio, then Princess’s South American Passage sailing might be just the ticket. Both of these sultry cities feature on the 18-day itinerary – as do two Canary Islands, along with Casablanca and Gibraltar.

There are 12 sea days, but Princess puts on a programme of activities – from cooking demonstrations to dance classes and trivia contests – to help fill the time on board Sapphire Princess.

Departs 11 February 2026. From £1,129pp, excluding flights, princess.com

The cruise line will also be introducing a new range of winter sailings into the Caribbean and the Panama Canal in early 2026, all of which will be sailing from Tampa.

Airports near the Tampa cruise port

manila bay cruise by sun cruises

If arriving by air for your cruise, you can choose to fly into several airports close to the Tampa Bay cruise port.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is the closest option, approximately 7 miles and a 15-minute drive to Port Tampa Bay. Major airlines that fly here include Air Canada, Alaska, American, British Airways, JetBlue, Southwest, United and Virgin Atlantic.

If you're looking for lounge access, TPA has a Delta Sky Club at Concourse E.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is farther away but might have more affordable and desirable flight schedules for your needs. This popular Central Florida destination is approximately 85 miles from Tampa's cruise port. Though it can be just an hour-and-fifteen-minute drive without traffic, plan for considerable congestion on the highways between these two major cities. With traffic, reaching Port Tampa Bay from MCO airport can take up to two hours.

Over 40 airlines travel to MCO, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Alaska, American Airlines, British Airways, Delta, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Southwest, United and Virgin Atlantic.

At MCO, check out The Club lounge if you're heading to terminals A or B, where prebooking is available for a fee though often unnecessary. Alternatively, visit the Plaza Premium Lounge at Terminal C. Use your credit card perks for lounge access before your flight.

If you're spending time elsewhere in Florida before or after your cruise, you might want to consider Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), a smaller international airport. It's 60 miles, or an hour's drive, south of the port. Air Canada, Allegiant, American Airlines, Avelo, Breeze, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United fly from here.

Regardless of which airport you choose, you can minimize your travel costs by checking credit card perks. Flight companion passes are available if you're traveling as a couple with the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card . It offers a $99 Companion Fare (plus taxes and fees from $23) each account anniversary after spending $6,000 or more within the prior anniversary year.

If you plan your personal and business credit card spending wisely with a Southwest card , you can earn nearly two years of buy-one-get-one flights, minus taxes and fees.

How to get to Port Tampa Bay

manila bay cruise by sun cruises

You can get to the cruise port via independent companies, public transportation and hotel shuttles.

Ride-shares, cruise transfers and private shuttles are your best travel options from TPA to the cruise port. Though you can utilize public transportation with a combination of SkyConnect from the airport to a public bus, the travel time takes more than an hour with transfers and bus stops. On the other hand, a vehicle that takes you directly from the airport to the port only takes between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Cruise line transfers

All of the cruise lines that sail from Port Tampa Bay, except Margaritaville at Sea, offer transfers from the TPA airport to the cruise port for an additional fee, starting at $24.99 per person each way. None of the cruise lines offer transfers from MCO to the Tampa cruise port.

A deciding factor for where you stay before or after your cruise might be the convenience of a shuttle between the hotel and the cruise terminal. Inquire before booking if the hotel you're considering offers a shuttle service and if so, whether it's complimentary or not.

Hilton's Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown Tampa offers a free shuttle within three miles, including the cruise port, less than two miles away. While Tampa Marriott Water Street does not offer a shuttle, Tampa's free TECO Streetcar has a stop right in front of the hotel and at the cruise terminal.

Independent airport shuttles, van and car services

If you want to set up a private transfer, preplan and book a van, limo or sedan depending on the number of people in your party and your comfort preference.

Mears is a popular and reputable company in Central Florida that services Orlando and Tampa. The company's sizable fleet includes hundreds of luxury sedans, vans and limos. Use Mears' online quote system to budget for your transfer costs. A standard sedan that fits up to three people and four bags costs $150, while a van that can accommodate eight people and 10 bags will cost a little over $300. Car seats do not cost extra; if you need one, add it to the "Special Instructions" area of the online reservation system.

Other services, like Blue One Transportation , offer a private vehicle for up to four people for $90. A shared shuttle is also an option for $15 per person. There is no additional charge for children's car seats.

Taxis and ride-shares

If you are heading to the port directly from Tampa airport, Yellow Cab taxis will take you there from the baggage claim pickup areas for a flat rate of $35 . Taxis wait at the terminal for disembarking guests.

Metered rates within the city are $3.50 for the first 1/5 of a mile or part thereof. Additional miles cost $2.50. The minimum fee from the airport is $20.

Ride-shares pick up and drop off at each terminal in designated areas; the estimated ride cost between Tampa International Airport and Port Tampa Bay for Uber or Lyft starts at $20. It's an estimated $120 between Orlando International Airport and the port.

Because ride-shares show you the estimated ride cost before you book and taxis have variable fares depending on the driver's route, we favor ride-shares over taxis.

Public transportation from downtown Tampa/hotel district

The TECO Streetcar is a free service operated by the City of Tampa and runs throughout downtown Tampa and the Ybor City neighborhood. It drops you off within a short walk to all three cruise terminals at Station 7 , located at the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and Channelside Drive. Be mindful of the northbound or southbound direction you want to travel, whether you're coming to the port or leaving it to reach your local destination.

TECO Streetcar hours vary, so check the day's schedule, especially on weekends when cars start running later.

Tampa cruise port parking

On-site port parking

Official parking at the port is within walking distance of the cruise terminals at the Channelside Parking Garage . You can buy tickets for parking in advance of your cruise on the Port Tampa Bay website. Find your cruise to purchase your parking pass for your sailing, which is 100% refundable prior to a cruise.

Prepaid parking rates are $15.75 per day; the total cost will vary based on the length of your cruise. After prepaying, print your parking voucher, which you'll present to the cashier upon arrival. Alternatively, you can drive up to the port without a reservation; rates remain the same whether you prepay or not.

Parking is only available when the ship is docked, and all major credit cards and cash are accepted. If you want curbside drop-off at the cruise terminal entrance, opt for valet parking for the same daily rate plus an additional $20 fee. Limited oversized vehicle parking at the on-site garage — for vehicles exceeding 8 feet, 2 inches, or that require more than one parking space — is available for $30 per day.

Private lots

Some hotels like Hilton's Hotel Tampa Riverwalk have park-and-stay rates for cruisers. If your hotel doesn't have this option or if you're driving straight to the cruise port, consider a private lot to save some money.

While Port Tampa Bay's on-site Channelside Parking Garage is the closest lot to the terminals, other options aren't much farther from the ships. The 241 Parking garage is well-lit, gated and less than one mile north of the Channelside Parking Garage. At $8.99 per day, it's also more affordable than parking at the port. The lot does fill up, so you'll want to reserve in advance, though you can drive up and park without a reservation if spaces are available.

241 Parking recommends making reservations 30 days in advance during peak cruise season from November through April, and a minimum of 15 days in advance during off-peak cruise season from May to October. The lot provides a free shuttle to and from the port and accepts all major credit cards and cash.

Restaurants near Port Tampa Bay

The dining options near the port of Tampa range from Michelin-starred restaurants to casual eateries. If your schedule allows, set aside time to enjoy a meal on land and try local favorites from Cuban cuisine to fresh seafood.

Sparkman Wharf is on the waterfront next to the cruise port. See how this family-friendly destination has turned shipping containers into multiple restaurants and bars with outdoor seating areas. Sparkman Wharf also has retail shops and the Splitsville bowling alley for activities before or after your meal.

Armature Works is a fantastic food hall to visit – especially when it's hot or rainy and alfresco dining is not in the cards. Most of the seating is inside an air-conditioned building where you can order meals and treats from 18 vendors; outdoor dining space is limited.

Water Street Tampa is another dining destination within walking distance from the Tampa cruise port. Enjoy the avenue's wide walkways and lush greenery on your way to top-rated restaurants and bars.

Oxford Exchange is a late-19th-century building housing a mix of retail and dining. Its design and decor draw inspiration from London's historic clubs, libraries and shops. A sense of community can be felt throughout the space as people gather at the tea shop or enjoy the bookstore's book signings and lectures.

Columbia Restaurant is perhaps the city's most famous restaurant, with several locations across Florida; three are located in Tampa. It is well known for its Latin-inspired menu. Try the legendary 1905 salad or a Cuban sandwich. If you're choosing among the three locations, know that the original venue is in Ybor City, less than two miles from the port. Alternatively, the Columbia Restaurant Cafe is accessible from outside the Tampa Bay History Center, less than a mile from the cruise port, and the third location is airside at Tampa International Airport in Concourse E.

Things to do in Tampa before or after your cruise

manila bay cruise by sun cruises

Tampa is known for its Gulf Coast beaches, culinary scene, multiple attractions and sunshine. Stay local to enjoy what the city offers or visit nearby areas to experience Central Florida's attractions.

Nearby beaches

Beachgoers love the jewel-toned water of Florida's Gulf Coast. Ben T. Davis Beach is the closest and most popular sandy oasis, just over 10 miles west of the cruise port. Metered parking is nearby; arrive early to beat the crowds and find a spot.

Cypress Point Park is a public neighborhood park with access to the water, a small sandy shoreline, a playground, a sand volleyball court, trails and a disc golf course. It's less than 8 miles west of the cruise port.

The Tampa Riverwalk

Beginning just one mile from the port is The Tampa Riverwalk. This 2.6-mile walking path runs along the Hillsborough River. Purchase a one-day or three-day Tampa Riverwalk Attraction Pass for access to the following seven family-friendly attractions:

  • The Florida Aquarium
  • Tampa Bay History Center
  • Glazer Children's Museum
  • Tampa Museum of Art
  • Pirate Water Taxi
  • Florida Museum of Photographic Arts
  • Henry B. Plant Museum

Live sporting events

Cruises depart from Tampa year-round, so if you cruise from September through April, there's likely a live sporting event taking place. Attend a Tampa Bay Lightning game at Amalie Arena during the NHL season from October through April (and further into summer if the team makes the playoffs). Steinbrenner Field is the place to be during spring training for the New York Yankees during February and March. If you want to see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in action during football season, head to Raymond James Stadium from September to January.

Theme parks

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, just 10 miles north of the cruise port, is filled with thrills for all ages, from children's rides to roller coasters for teens and adults. Thousands of people buy special event tickets for the popular Howl-O-Scream event, which takes place from early September to early November.

Alternatively, take advantage of Tampa's proximity to Orlando's theme parks and plan a pre- or postcruise visit to Walt Disney World, Sea World or Universal Parks & Resorts. You'll need an extended stay because the theme parks are more than 70 miles from Port Tampa Bay, and it can take two hours or longer to get there with traffic. You might consider flying into MCO instead of TPA if you're planning a theme park visit before or after your sailing.

It's also home to such museums as the Dali Museum and the Chihuly Collection. Other vacationers like Clearwater for its beach, nightlife and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Thanks to the annual SHINE Festival, which draws renowned street artists from around the world, St. Pete is also known for its dozens of colorful murals. If you like public art, the St. Pete mural tour takes place at 10 a.m. every Sunday. A local guide brings visitors to 30 murals in a four-block radius. The proceeds from the tour fees are reinvested in the city's murals.
