Wham! (formed in 1981) is a British, unabashedly pop duo comprised of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, who rose to worldwide fame with their single “Wake Me up Before You Go Go” in 1984, hailing from Bushey, Hertfordshire, England.

Bushey, Hertfordshire-natives George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley first met at Bushey Meads School and with shared interests performed with the ska group, the Executive together. Upon the band’s dissolution Michael and Ridgeley were determined the continue performing and dove into a recording contract with the independent label Innervision. Ahead of their debut album the pair released the single “Wham Rap!”, which failing to enter the charts led the group to appear on “Top of the Pops” in 1982, where they performed the single “Young Guns (Go for It!)”. The live show caused an upsurge in popularity and led to the single ultimately rising to No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

The singles “Bad Boys” and “Club Tropicana” followed by the end of 1983 turning Wham! into pop royalty alongside Duran Duran and Culture Club. The band subsequently released their debut LP “Fantastic” which was help aloft the UK Albums Chart for two weeks. Legal battles ensued with their label Innervision, which ultimately transpired in Wham! signing with Sony’s Epic Records and Innervision filing for bankruptcy. With major-label backing, the duo’s subsequent single “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” topped the charts in the UK and the U.S., proving their first huge success.

As a result Michael was already planning his solo career, and the duo’s next single “Careless Whisper” was credited at Wham! featuring George Michael in the U.S. In 1984 the pair retuned to release the chart-topping single “Freedom”, followed by the No. 1 full-length “Make It Big”. The christmas single “Last Christmas/Everything She Wants” followed the same year, proving the be the highest-selling No. 2 single of all time. In support of their full-length record Wham! embarked on a UK arena tour and became the first UK band to play a show in China. Annocuning their breakup in 1986, Wham! released the farewell single “Where Did Your Heart Go?”, and the North American full-length “Music from the Edge of Heaven”.

was watching MTV one day and bad boys came on from that minute i was hooked and a fan. i lived in Wyoming in 80's i went to Vegas to meet my mom and was make it big was my second concert ever. i always had hair parted on side before George but when came back from Vegas to po dunk Gillette i had blonde highlights and was first male to have one let alone both ears pierced in northern Wyoming. i woulda got some real shit if wasn't friends with the whole different packs in town. played football and was starter so jocks didn't mess me too much my bestest friends were a nerd and a i guess call them stoners so i was ok there, it was the triple attention from girls that got me and i was already kinda a player but i got so many girls the 3 years of high school i was such a slut and stayed that way until first monogamous relation shit which met her at wham concert. i won 6 of 8 George Michael look alike contest while living in Vegas over the years but the best was the one held by John Casablanca and had George n Andrew as final judges and when he picked me i was almost a freaking puddle and when i told him we were brothers from different mothers except he got all the gay genes and i got all the asshole ones cause i was like said a slut i didn't have one girl ever and very few more than 3 times. told he got the sensitive caring part and i got all the bad boy genes and there was a dinner with just wham the bands manager and certain guests George's sister was on who arriving late saw me n Andrew talking and she totally thought i was him until Andy said sis that's not George its winner and she looked at me closer and was wow gotta ask mom if she had twins and gave one up. i saw wham 5 times and George like 4 once in England but wham had 2 members and even tho Andrew only put out one album and it was a rock album (Shake You only release find it and listen ya like it) he was still good enough if had right management to be good not like George but he woulda had longer career in music than he had and he was robbed but hey he can drive better than George . Wham came and went too fast and it wasn't fair losing my brother on Christmas (my kids hugged me almost all day and didn't even open presents till 26th. but we loved Prince and losing my idol and my brother same year and on my birthday and Christmas they were worried old man have heart attack. but i will tell everyone that the entertainer who does George at Vegas world is as close to his voice (i still look more like George than anyone ever will )but I think George would give seal of approval if ya never got to see or just miss him like me go see the stars at Vegas world their Cher and Beatles are also the best i ever seen. LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU MY BROTHER AND THO ONLY GOT TO MEET AND TALK TO YOU 2 TIMES YOU ARE MY BROTHER THE BETTER HALF OF ME AND WISH IT WAS ME GONE CAUSE YOU HAD MORE TO GIVE YOUR FANS AND YOU WERE WAY BETTER THAN I WAS. Wham! was around for too short of a time, but their mark on pop history is indelible. It does not seem possible to stand still at a Wham! show or a George Michael concert for that matter. The synth leads are off the chart catchy and the beats are absolutely irresistible.

These performances feature a great line-up of musicians often including a large group of backing soul singers. This works particularly well for R&B flavored songs such as "Freedom" in which the backing vocalist belt out the lyrics like a baptist church choir. The crowd goes absolutely nuts for this one and more than willingly chime in. George Michael is as charismatic and uninhibited as ever! You can often find him prancing around the stage and getting up in the audiences faces, reaching out for their hands.

While Wham! often uses a large backing band to fully maximize the breadth of their sound, they are also known to perform some songs like "Wham! rap" with very minimal accompaniment. Sometimes George Michael will perform this just behind a prerecorded backing track, other times behind a full band. This track shows the versatility of Wham!'s music and is one of the first instances of rap music integrating into the sound of mainstream pop. The song features heavily non-syncopated funk chords, air-tight drum beats and huge bursts of brass all underscoring the rhyme of George Michael's lyrics.

The light show in and of itself is considered a highlight of the performance. The sparkling display of projections and contorting computer graphics displayed behind George Michael and his band perfectly match the elaborate glam style of their sound. George Michael still keeps the sound of Wham! alive performing classics such as "I'm Your Man" and "Everything She Wants". He is also praised for his diverse range of covers. You can hear anything form a Police hit single to a more obscure cover of a Rufus Wainwright composition.

Wham! spent the 80’s battling it out with the likes of Duran Duran and Culture Club for the crown of best ‘pop act’ and in many people opinion they were considered the winner! Formed by George Michael and Andrew Ridley, the duo dominated the top of the charts and achieved a great deal of critical success. After they broke up, George went on to have an amazing solo career spanning many decades.

They were considered an amazing live act! George Michael has a voice to rival any and has since gone on to fill in for Freddie Mercury on Queen tours. They were always upbeat, energetic and bags of fun. They owned the stage and did all they could to get the atmosphere vibrant, with people dancing, singing and generally having the time of their life. With songs like Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Club Tropicana, Freedom and Careless Whisper among a host of other chart toppers they are never going to struggling getting people in a good mood, are they? Wham! made wonderfully crafted and catchy pop songs, it’s almost impossible to hear their songs and not get them stuck in your head. To put it simply! They are one of the best pop bands to come out of the U.K

The Final was the farewell concert by English musical duo Wham!. It was held at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 28 June 1986. A total of 72,000 people attended the event, which included support artists and special guests, such as Elton John.

Wham! had announced the breakup in 1986. During late February Michael was a guest on the talk show Aspel & Company, he announced that Wham! were to break-up and were to perform one last show.

During production rehearsals for the Wembley concert, Wham! performed two warm-up shows in aid of Capital radio’s “Help a London Child” charity on the 23rd and 24 June at the Brixton Academy in London.

The first ever public viewing of the Wham! in China: Foreign Skies documentary film was shown on large screens on either side of the stage. This set a record for the largest audience at a film premiere.

At 7.35pm an eight-minute introduction to "Everything She Wants" began from behind a huge black curtain which had "The Final" on it in huge white letters. It opens to reveal Michael - dressed in leather, black jeans, wearing sunglasses and dancing in sync with two other dancers. Ridgeley, Shirley and Pepsi come to the stage. Ridgeley takes off his long black coat and strolled up the walkways to take off his black gloves. "Club Tropicana" then follows. "This is the best thing I've ever looked at". Michael explains, "We've got four years of thank-yous to say this evening... and I know we're going to enjoy saying them. So let's get started!". "Heartbeat" and "Battlestations" was performed.

Afterwards, it was "Bad Boys", Pepsi and Shirlie made a brief appearance wearing bouffant wigs, included was "If You Were There". A large white piano was wheeled on stage, Elton John was dressed in Ronald McDonald make-up and costume, a shiny red wig, a red nose, a stripey red t-shirt and yellow dungarees. Guitarist David Austin joins and "The Edge of Heaven" begins. Michael splits the audience into three groups and gets each group to sing a section. They perform John’s 1973 hit "Candle In The Wind". "Credit Card Baby", "Like A Baby", "Love Machine", "Where Did Your Heart Go?" all followed in quick succession.

There is a pause before a cover of Carly Simon’s "Why" is performed. Wham! begin their festive single "Last Christmas". Michael got the audience to do the "Wave" and everyone holds up the orange side of their programmes. It transfers into "Wham! Rap". After the ballad "A Different Corner" and "Freedom" end, they disappear for a short while and come back for "Careless Whisper" and "Young Guns". Michael runs around the stage and then it is "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". The band comes back to do the encore, their last song, "I'm Your Man". They are alone on stage. Michael takes off his black jacket and Ridgeley is in suede with denim flies. Lights flash around, Elton John joins again in a pink mohican. Simon Le Bon (of Duran Duran) made a surprise entrance on stage. Wham! embrace, the moment is captured on the large screens.

When George Michael performed with Wham! for the last time and said it was ‘most important day of my life’

22 December 2021, 14:08

After just four years after forming Wham!, George and Andrew decided to go their separate ways with an enormous 'farewell' concert at Wembley Arena

Video footage of Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael standing in front of 72,000 screaming fans at Wembley arena in 1986 for the very last time was a huge moment for the two Wham! stars.

George Michael 's final appearance with Andrew Ridgeley before Wham! broke up in 1986 was a pivotal time for the young singer who went as far as to write to his fans confirming it was "the most important day of his life".

After just four years after becoming the most famous band in the world, George and Andrew decided to go their separate ways with an enormous 'farewell' concert at Wembley Arena, much to the despair - and delight - of their millions of fans.

  • Remembering George Michael's beautiful forgotten Christmas track 'December Song' 11 years later
  • 8 times George Michael stunned strangers with private acts of charity

Following on from the release of album The Final, Wham! 's last concert was held on June 28, 1986 as the last chance for the band to say goodbye before going their separate ways.

George Michael would leave Wham! and go on to become one of the biggest singer-songwriters of recent times, while Andrew Ridgeley would chose a quieter life mainly out of the public eye, yet before doing so the two young performers each wrote a final last letter to their fans.

Published in the foreword of the Wham! Final Concert program, the boys' two letters were published in full and sent as a last goodbye and thank you to their dedicated followers.

In extracts taken from the program, George Michael wrote in his letter: "Today will be the most important day of my life. Hopefully it will also be one of the best.

"Whatever else, it will represent the end of four years of something most people don’t believe in. A dream come true. It’s a cliché, but I can’t think of a better way to describe what has happened to Andrew and me since the beginning of 1982," he said.

"Someone or something has been smiling on us over these four years, and sometimes I feel it all happened almost too fast, too quickly. There hasn’t really been time to appreciate or savour things."

"If I sound like I’m complaining, please don’t get me wrong. I still can’t believe my luck. I just wish I could do it again, in slow motion, to take it all in. Because something’s telling me that whatever lies ahead, nothing will mean as much to me as this group has.

"Four years may not be the longest lifespan for a band, but I think that Andrew and I can safely say that we put more care and hard work into that time than most bands put into a decade.

"In return, we have seen loyalty and support beyond belief. The idea that today, 72,000 people left their homes to see Wham! say goodbye is one that will only fully come home to me when I stand on stage facing you all. The fact that the ticket demand would have required us to say goodbye several times is the greatest compliment that any artists could ever hope for.

"Thank you everyone. Thank you Andrew. Today will probably be the best day of my life – so far. George Michael"

At 7.35pm, after an eight-minute introduction, the opening bars to 'Everything She Wants' began and from behind a huge black curtain emblazoned with 'The Final' George Michael appeared, dressed in all black with his signature sunglasses and danced to the ecstatic crowd.

Andrew Ridgeley then walked on stage accompanied by singers Pepsi and Shirlie and proceeded to walk down the walkway before shedding his long black coat.

George Michael turned and spoke to the crowd, saying: "This is the best thing I've ever looked at. We've got four years of thank-yous to say this evening... and I know we're going to enjoy saying them. So let's get started!"

Wham! performed hits including ' Club Tropicana ', 'Battlestations', 'Heartbeat' and ' Bad Boys ' before Elton John appeared on stage dressed as Ronald McDonald and they all performed 'Candle In The Wind' for the sold-out stadium, before the boys continued singing 'Credit Card Baby', 'Like A Baby', 'Love Machine' and 'Where Did Your Heart Go?'

Wham! then sang ' Last Christmas ', 'Wham! Rap', 'A Different Corner' and ' Freedom ', before coming back for an encore of ' Careless Whisper ', 'Young Guns', 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' before being joined by Simon Le Bon for the final of ' I' m Your Man '.

omg your soooo lucky. I was born in the late 90s and i always felt i was living in the wrong generation, i can relate to people who grew up in the 80s more than people in my generation. I hate my generation, they don’t appreciate real music. i have been a whamster and a George Michael fan since 7. So the older generation are lucky, blessed and honoured to grow up in the time of George Michael, whitney, elton john, prince , Michael jackson, smokey Robinson, David bowie, the Queens. I would give anything to go back in time to the 80s and grow up in the 80s. YOU are the lucky ones, so cherish those memories for as long as you live.

wham 1986 tour

Celebrating 40 years of chart-topping classics and hidden gems, WHAM! The Singles: Echoes From The Edge of Heaven will take you on a journey through the greatest hits of WHAM!’s extraordinary career. The Singles: Echoes From The Edge of Heaven is out now.

This multi format release includes a special edition 7” vinyl singles carry case containing all the hits, which spanned four dazzlingly successful years, kicking off with 1982’s Young Guns (Go For It) and culminating in 1986’s The Edge Of Heaven. Along the way, there was some of the most uplifting music of any era: WHAM! RAP! (Enjoy What You Do), Bad Boys, Club Tropicana, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Freedom, Last Christmas, Everything She Wants and I’m Your Man!

George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley formed WHAM! in 1981.The lifelong friends who met at secondary school in the small town of Bushey became one of the most globally successful pop acts of the 1980s, selling more than thirty million records worldwide. Several pop generations down the line, this treasure trove of musical gems continues to inspire legions of new fans!

George and Andrew released eleven singles as WHAM!, incredibly, five of them (Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Freedom, Last Christmas, I’m Your Man and The Edge Of Heaven) were British Number 1s. Meanwhile, in the United States, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Careless Whisper and Everything She Wants were chart toppers: remarkably, all three were from the same album, Make It Big, which sold six million copies in America alone. Elsewhere, the boys topped the charts in a host of countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Holland, Italy, Ireland, South Africa and Switzerland!

In 1985, WHAM! became the first western group to perform in China, where two rapturously received concerts broke countless cultural barriers!

WHAM! toured the world. The Big Tour of 1984 and ‘85, comprised thirty-nine shows in support of the multi-platinum British and American Number One album – Make It Big. It took in the UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, United States, Hong Kong and China and in the summer of 1985, their WHAMAMERICA! stadium tour played to hundreds of thousands of WHAM! fans the length and breadth of the USA.

On June 28, 1986, WHAM! The Final saw the duo depart in a blaze of glory in front of seventy-two thousand people at Wembley Stadium. The concert included performances by their friend Elton John!

Best of all, George and Andrew’s friendship was as strong at the end as it was in the beginning. WHAM! never got old and they never lost their exclamation mark!

Replica of historic 'Seneca Chief' sails through Rochester

Rochester, N.Y. — A full-sized replica of the boat Seneca Chief that opened the Erie Canal in 1825 passed through Rochester on Wednesday during its tour of communities across the state.

The sailing of the Seneca Chief commemorates the bicentennial of Governor DeWitt Clinton's inaugural voyage.

Members from the Buffalo Maritime Center invited the community to visit the boat to learn about the Erie Canal's past and present and help create a shared vision of its future.

“Governor DeWitt Clinton was aboard this boat in 1825 and he left from Buffalo, went all the way down to New York City and did what was called the wedding of the waters where he took water from Lake Erie and dumped it into the ocean right around Sandy Hook to bring the waters together, saying that the Erie Canal is open for business,” said Executive Director of the Buffalo Maritime Center Brian Trzeciak.

The community boatbuilding project was made possible with the help of hundreds of volunteers.
