The Perfect One Week Slovenia Itinerary: Europe’s Hidden Gem

06.02.24 | Nikki Gibson | 14 Comments

If you’re planning a trip to the beautiful Balkan country of Slovenia, this is the only one week itinerary you need.

I spent 11 days traveling in Slovenia, and I came back with the info you need to plan your trip. I’ve compressed my trip into an easy to follow one week itinerary to Slovenia’s emerald rivers, show-stopping alps, and fairytale lakes.

Use this one week Slovenia itinerary to plan your amazing trip to Slovenia!

And if you plan to spend longer than one week in Slovenia, I have also included even more options for extending your Slovenia itinerary.

How Much Time Do You Need For A Slovenia Itinerary?

Table of Contents

You can technically visit Slovenia for as short as long as you want, or are able to! However, Slovenia is deceptively ‘small’. There is SO much to see. So, for that reason, I think the longer the better.

One weekend in Slovenia is enough to see Ljubljana and take a day trip or two. But, you’ll likely be left wanting so much more.

However, if you want to get the full Slovenian experience, one week is the minimum I would recommend!

I have included ideas for what to do to extend your trip in Slovenia if you’re planning a longer stay.

How to Get Around in Slovenia

When traveling in Slovenia, you have a few options for how to best get around.

Personally, I prefer to stick to public transport, trains, and buses while traveling on my own to simplify things. And Slovenia has buses and trains that will take you just about everywhere you want to go.

But, if you feel comfortable with the idea of renting a car or are traveling with someone, it can be a more time efficient way to get around the country. On top of that, having a rental car can get you more access to places that are harder to reach with public transportation.

Whether you choose public transportation or a rental car will also depend on your travel style. For me, I didn’t want to deal with parking a car everywhere I went and liked the idea of using public transport to get around for the week.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Slovenia?

I have visited Slovenia in both Summer and Autumn, and enjoyed both! Of course, in Summer you will be able to swim in Lake Bled or down on the coast in Piran. In Autumn, it isn’t quite warm enough to enjoy the lakes of Slovenia, however you’ll run into less crowds and lower prices.

While much of Europe is crowded in Summer, I found Slovenia to be the exception. Lake Bled can get a bit busy, but if you venture out towards Bohinj or into the mountains, you will be surprised at the lack of crowds. July to September are idea for the Summer months in Slovenia.

The Very Best One Week Slovenia Itinerary

Let’s get right into this fun and adventurous one week Slovenia itinerary!

I visited at the end of August, when the Summer weather is still fantastic, but there are less visitors. August & September are the perfect months to visit Slovenia.

Day 1: Ljubljana

Begin your Slovenia itinerary in the beautiful and charming capital city of Ljubljana . Fly into Ljubljana Airport , which is about 45 minutes outside of town.

If you’re renting a car, do so at the airport. If you plan to get around using public transportation, hop onto a bus that takes you right into Ljubljana’s city center. The bus takes about 45 minutes and costs around €4. Buy your tickets directly from the driver at the bus stop outside of baggage claim. You can find more info about the Ljubljana Airport bus here .

On your first day in Ljubljana , get to know the city! Explore the Old Town of Ljubljana by wandering the pedestrian-only streets along the Ljubljanica River . In the Summer, you’ll find tons of activities happening around the city including food markets, flea markets, live music, and even water volleyball on the Ljubljanica River!

Ljubljanica Boat Ride

green boat going down river in ljubljana

I recommend you take a boat ride down the river as a great way to cool off in the Summer and get a different perspective of the city. I recommend buying a ticket at one of the little stands along the river (location noted in my Slovenia Itinerary map).

The price for one hour is €14 for an adult ticket. The Visit Ljubljana website can give you more information on the Ljubljanica River tourist boats.

The boat ride I went on was an hour and took us up and down the river in town. Be sure to get your camera out because you’ll love these views of town from down here!

Visit Ljubljana Castle

If you do one thing in Ljubljana, make it a visit to Ljubljana Castle .

From the castle, you get the best views of town and a great history lesson about the significance of the castle in Ljubljana’s past. The most interesting history of the castle, in my opinion, is that it held prisoner’s of war in WWII.

To get to Ljubljana Castle , you can either take a short uphill walk that starts below the castle, or take the funicular . You can buy tickets to Ljubljana Castle that include the funicular ride, so I think it’s the best way to visit the castle your first time. An entry ticket without the funicular is €12 for adults, with the funicular it is €16.

BUDGET TIP: If you’re on a budget and don’t want to pay to visit Ljubljana Castle, you can visit the grounds for free. I went back to the castle for sunset without going inside the castle, and I took the walking path to do so! It only takes about 10 minutes.

The best sunset views in all of Ljubljana are at the wine bar located on the side of the castle, called Grajska Vinoteka .

Buy your funicular and castle tickets together and ahead of time!

ljubljana castle at sunset

Dragon Bridge

As you walk around Ljubljana and enjoy the beautiful architecture, stop by the Dragon Bridge . Zmajski Most is a quick stop to make while in the city, but it’s a fun bridge that’s well known for it’s beautiful Dragon Statues.

Tivoli Park

If you’re looking for wide open green space for a picnic or just to enjoy a slow afternoon in Ljubljana, Tivoli Park is the perfect spot.

It only takes about 20 minutes to walk from the center of Old Town Ljubljana to Tivoli Park. This is also one of the best free activities in Ljubljana if you’re on a budget.

Central Market Ljubljana

outdoor food market with people sitting on steps and eating

Central Market in Ljubljana is a meeting place where locals sell their flowers, locally made cheeses, organic vegetables, and crafts. The market is open daily, except on Sundays. From mid-March until the end of October, you’ll find a huge food market with local restaurants offering quick bites, called Open Kitchen .

You’ll find that Old Town Ljubljana is very walking friendly and not very big. You can see much of what the city has to offer in one full day. Read my full Ljubljana travel guide for more information on what to do in Ljubljana!

Where to Stay in Ljubljana

Luxury: InterContinental Ljubljana

Mid-Range: Bloom Hotel Ljubljana

Budget: Ars Longa Apartments

Day 2: Ljubljana & Day Trip to Postojna

On your second day in Ljubljana, take a day trip to the impressive Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle . This is one of my favorite places in Slovenia and a truly hidden gem!

Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle

castle build into rocks

Postojna Cave is one of the largest cave systems in Europe, and was the very first cave to install a train to take visitors inside!

On top of that, you’ll also find ‘baby dragons’ in the caves. These ‘dragons’ are actually the Proteus Anguinus, otherwise referred to as an Olm , are small white animals that resemble salamanders. However, they are unique to this area of the world and their main habitat are these caves. Therefore, they have no eyes as they live in total darkness with the caves. Fascinating!

You can take a bus or a train to Postojna to see the caves if you don’t have a rental car. The bus runs from Ljubljana’s bus depot straight to the entrance of Postojna caves. Refer to this timetable for bus times throughout the year and to reserve your bus ticket. I recommend booking your bus ticket ahead of time to make sure you have a spot.

Be sure to book your cave ticket online ahead of time as you’ll need to reserve a tour time. Postojna caves can only be explored with a tour group, so buying a ticket is a must. I recommend buying the combined Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle ticket with costs about €41.90.

The tour of Postojna caves takes around 90 minutes. There is a shuttle that will take you over to Predjama Castle after your caves tour that runs about every 15 minutes. Optionally, you can drive if you brought your own car. You will need cash to pay for the shuttle, around €2 each way, so make sure you have some change with you!

Day 3: Lake Bohinj

In my opinion, Slovenia’s beauty lies in its mountains and crystal clear lakes. Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps of Slovenia are where you’ll find these gorge-ous (pun intended) landscapes!

Head over to the ‘hidden’ secret of Slovenia, and the local’s preferred vacation spot, Lake Bohinj . This is the perfect place to relax, hike, swim, and generally enjoy the beauty of Slovenia’s alps.

The town of Bohinj is a very small, laid back town with a few hotels and restaurants. Unlike Lake Bled, it’s much less developed and therefore more affordable and quiet. But don’t be fooled, it does get busy in the Summer, just mostly filled with day-tripping locals!

While at Lake Bohinj, I stayed at a mountaintop chalet only accessible by cable car! It was a very fun, unique accommodation experience that I loved.

Swimming in Lake Bohinj

On your first day in Bohinj , enjoy the lake and its beauty by taking a dip! You can swim just about anywhere in the lake that you can find a spot to wade. I recommend walking along the path that circles the entire lake until you find a suitable spot.

If you’re looking for a spot to eat, a popular place to have lunch is Restavracija Kramar. However, I preferred a grab-and-go stand called Divja Jaga serving delicious locally sourced wraps, sandwiches, and kombucha. You’ll also find a free water fountain with pristine drinking water beside Divja Jaga .

Panoramic Boat

people in a canoe on a lake in slovenia

Take an electric boat ride from one end of the lake to the other as a fun way to get a different perspective of the lake. You can ride a public bus, as well, but a boat is much more fun! You’ll pay onboard and it will run you €9 one way, or €14 for a return ticket.

Paddle Board on Bohinjsko Jezero

Another great activity for your first day in Lake Bohinj is to rent a paddle board, canoe, or kayak to get out onto the water. You can do this at either end of the lake by walking up to the rental shop. At the Ukanc end of the lake, you’ll find rentals at Camp Bohinj . If you are on the other end of the lake, you can rent right next to the Zlatorog statue near the dock.

Where to Stay in Lake Bohinj

Luxury:  Hotel Bohinj

Mid-Range: Hotel Majerca

Budget: Accommodation Resman

Hostel: Hostel, Rooms and Apartment Ceklin

Unique Stay: Chalet Burja

Day 4: Lake Bohinj

slovenia tourism youtube

For your second day in Bohinj , I recommend doing some hiking and chasing waterfalls. Lake Bohinj is surrounded by massive Alps and there is so much to do and see within them.

Vogel Cable Car

Start your day by taking the Vogel cable car up to Vogel Mountain . This is a ski resort in the winter and hiking hotspot in the summer. From up here, you’ll get the most incredible views of Lake Bohinj below and the Julian Alps beyond.

A return ticket to the top of Vogel is €29.50 for adults, so be sure to spend a good amount of time up here enjoying the views!

While at the top of Vogel, you can grab a drink and a bite at Bajtica , a little chalet that serves food throughout the day.

Bajtica is also a guesthouse that hosts hikers in the evening, and can be a really fun stay while in Bohinj. I actually stayed at Bajtica Guesthouse and loved it (yes I did have to take the cable car with my luggage to get there!)

mountain waterfall flowing into blue water

Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica)

Once you’re ready to head back down from Vogel, catch a bus at the Vogel bus stop that will take you to Savica Waterfall. You can also walk through the woods on a nice walking path if you prefer. This will take you about an hour from the lake, but it’s a shorter walk downhill on the way back. I took the bus there and walked back for efficiency.

To walk to Savica Waterfall, follow the path from Ukanc to Savica, with signs along the way. You’ll walk through some residential streets, but you’ll eventually end up on a gravel path to the waterfall entrance.

You can purchase tickets at the entrance to Savica for just €4.

Day 5: Lake Bled

island in middle of blue lake with church

On day 5, you’ll head over to Lake Bled, the veritable jewel of Slovenia. Lake Bled is likely the most recognizable landscape in Slovenia. You’ve probably seen a picture of the beautiful mountain lake with a small church island in the middle on your Instagram!

And if you only have time for a day trip to Lake Bled, no worries! Use my Lake Bled Day trip guide to plan your trip!

Bled Castle

On your first day in Lake Bled, head up to Bled Castle first thing to beat the crowds. From here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful views of Lake Bled and learn the history of the castle and its inhabitants.

An adult ticket to visit Bled Castle will cost you €17, check the official website for opening times and to purchase your tickets ahead of time.

After Bled Castle , take a walk around the lake, as far as you want! As you walk around the lake, the views are constantly changing, and you’ll find cute restaurants, benches to sit, and a really peaceful atmosphere.

Swimming in Lake Bled

If you’re looking for a swimming spot in Bled , there are a few designated swimming areas. However, you can swim anywhere that there isn’t a ‘no wading’ or ‘no swimming’ sign. My favorite places to swim are right near the Mlino bus stop or at Camp Bled (exact locations saved on my Slovenia map)

Assumption of Maria Church

slovenia tourism youtube

Time to head over to the island! The island in Lake Bled is home to the Assumption of Maria Church and is a must do while in Bled. The best way to visit the island is from the Mlino side of the lake (furthest from the castle).

You can get to the island a few ways: swimming, renting a rowboat, or hiring a Pletna. If you want to try your hand at swimming over to the island, just be sure you feel comfortable doing so! It is further than it looks.

You can rent a rowboat from any of the spots in Mlino where the row boats are docked. If you would rather have someone else row for you, take a Pletna instead. A Pletna is a larger boat that is motorless but can hold around 20 people. Just walk up to the Pletna and you can ask the operator when the next ride is and pay directly with cash or card! It cost me €18 for my return ticket.

Once on the island you can wander around, grab some gelato, ring the church bell for good luck, and stop for tea or a drink at the cafe.

End the night with some pizza from Pizzeria Rustika and call it a night!

Where To Stay In Lake Bled

Luxury: Adora Luxury Hotel

Mid-Range: Hotel Triglav (this is where I stayed, and I HIGHLY recommend)

Budget: Penzion Pibernick

Hostel: Pr Močnk

Day 6: Lake Bled & Vintgar Gorge

While in Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge is a must visit spot. You’ll find an emerald green river rushing through tall gorge walls into a fantastic waterfall at the end.

Vintgar Gorge

slovenia tourism youtube

To visit Vintgar Gorge , you can either walk about 45 minutes from Bled (quite a beautiful walk), or take a bus from Bled’s main bus stop to Podhom , then walk an additional 20 minutes to the gorge. You can also take the train from the other end of the lake to Podhom, then walk another 15 minutes to the gorge.

It costs €10 for an adult ticket, which you can purchase in person or online here in advance.

The gorge takes you on a wooden path built onto the rock and along the Radovna Valley river . The path is a single person track, though it is wide enough to pass by people as the stop and look. You’re welcome to take as much time as you want to enjoy the views once you enter the gorge. But, keep in mind that it can get rather crowded in the busy months and the path gets fairly full. I recommend going as early as possible to beat the crowds.

At the end of the gorge, take a right by the snack hut before crossing the bridge and head down to the viewpoint across the river. From here, you’ll get an amazing view of the Šum waterfall .

Once you leave the gorge, you’ll either be directed left, back to the carpark if you drove yourself, or you can continue on to the right and hike your way back into Bled. To walk back to Bled, follow the signs to St. Katherine Church (Sv. Katerina), and then all the way into Bled.

Toboggan at Straža Bled

@nikkionherway Probably the most fun I’ve had in ages!! If you’re in Lake Bled, please make sure you go tobogganing at Straža. You can walk to the lift in about 10-15 minutes from the lake, and it only costs €11 for one lift and one ride. This is such a fun activity to do in Lake Bled in the Summer! #lakebled #bled #slovenia #lakebledslovenia #tobogganing #europetraveldestinations #CapCut ♬ Aesthetic – Tollan Kim

If you’re in Bled in the summer, you have to go over to Straža Hill and do the summer toboggan track . It costs €11 for an adult ticket to ride up the lift once, and down the track once. I thought this would be a kids thrill ride, but no! It’s incredibly fun for adults, too.

Have dinner at Gostilna Pri Planincu for some delicious traditional Slovenian food and beer.

Hike To Mala Osojnica Viewpoint At Sunrise

island in middle of lake with church on it and with castle in the background

The best hike to do in Bled is the Mala Osojnica viewpoint on the Mlino side of the lake. The trailheads are marked and you can access the trail near Camp Bled, or near Vila Draga Bled (trailhead locations marked on Slovenia itinerary map).

Day 7: Kranj OR Extended Itineraries

If you’re ending your one week Slovenia Itinerary here, head to Kranj , near the airport. I don’t recommend going back to Ljubljana as you’ll just end up backtracking to get to the airport.

Kranj is an adorable town dubbed the capital of the Slovenian Alps. It’s situated on the Sava River and has fantastic views of the mountains just northwest.

If your flight leaves early out of LJU airport, I recommend staying the night before in Kranj and getting a taxi to the airport. If you have time to explore Kranj for the day, there is plenty to do.

Find the history beneath Kranj and take a guided tour of the Old Town Kranj Tunnels below your feet. The tunnels were designed and built in WWII to keep the residents of Kranj safe during bombardment. Walk through Old Town and admire important cultural monuments like Kranj Town Hall, the Church of St. Cantianus , and the art museums within Layer House .

Where to Stay in Kranj: Layer Residences

Ideas To Extend Your One Week Slovenia Itinerary

Add these destinations to the 7-day itinerary above for a wider tour of all Slovenia has to offer!

  • Piran , the Adriatic jewel of Slovenia and a gorgeous addition to any Slovenia trip. Swim in the beautiful waters of the Adriatic Sea, taste Slovenia’s local wine, and spend your time in the sun in Piran.
  • Koper is a fantastic way to round out your Slovenia itinerary and get to see the country’s fantastic, yet small, coastline.
  • Celje is the fourth largest city in Slovenia, just east of Ljubljana and in the region of Styria. Visit Celje Castle and Celje Cathedral while enjoying the beautiful green landscape that surrounds you.
  • Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, is a must visit in the northern part of the country. It is set amidst the wine region of Slovenia, making it a great destination for cultural experiences like wine tours.
  • Triglav National Park has much more to explore than the small amount we saw in this itinerary! If you’re able to, hop on a bus to Kranjska Gora or Bovec to experience more of the Julian Alps. Canyoneering and white water rafting are two very popular activities in the area.

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning a trip to Slovenia, this is the perfect first-time itinerary!

Hey! This looks amazing, and inspired me to visit, I was just wondering how you got from each place, were there trains to each town?

I’m so glad I’ve inspired you! Slovenia is amazing. I got around using the bus system, which is really nice if you’re traveling solo. However, renting a car would also be pretty easy and a great way to get around. It would definitely make the journey more efficient. There is also a train system, so I think doing a mix of buses and trains is probably the easiest option depending on where you’re going and what’s available. Hope that helps!

March 18, 2024 at 3:23 pm

Hi! I visited Slovenia in August. Best times to go are Summer, late summer for less crowds. However, we have also been during October and enjoyed that as well. It isn’t warm enough to swim but it’s still beautiful 🙂

Thank you for such a helpful itinerary, Slovenia looks beautiful. We are planning on staying in Ljubljana for several days and Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj for a week. We love visiting local sites, walking, cycling & water activities. My husband & I were planning on hiring a car but you mentioned how easy it was using public transport. Looking at our itinerary I was wondering what you would suggest. We probably won’t visit the coast. Many thanks.

March 18, 2024 at 3:22 pm

Sounds fantastic! Glad I could help. If you feel comfortable renting a car, it will definitely make your trip more time efficient, so it’s a good idea! However, if you’d rather not rent, then the buses work just fine 🙂 Enjoy!

April 12, 2024 at 1:54 pm

Hi Joana! I did, I used the Slovenia bus website ( https://www.ap-ljubljana.si/en ) to book all of my buses 🙂 You can also buy the tickets in person at the bus station but for buses to Bled, they can fill up fast so I recommend booking in advance if you can. FlixBus is also a great bus operator that I really trust. Enjoy!

I will be following pretty close to your itinerary (I have a little less time so I’m not going to Bohinj) and I’m wondering what time of day you took the bus from Ljubljana to Bled. I will have luggage with me that I’d like to drop off when I get there (I’ll be staying at Hotel Triglav) but I would also like to get to Bled earlier in the day.

Slovenia Travel Guide

The mountains and lake surrounding the iconic and famous Bled Island in Slovenia

Slovenia is one of Europe’s least-visited destinations, which is crazy to me because it’s incredible! Known for its mountains, ski resorts, fabulous wine, extensive cave systems, incredible food, and postcard-perfect lakes, Slovenia offers all the beauty of Western Europe — but with a fraction of the crowds and for a fraction of the costs.

Ljubljana, the country’s vibrant capital, is considered one of the continent’s greenest and most livable cities while Lake Bled, Slovenia’s Insta-famous hotspot, is just as stunning in person as it is in photographs.

Inhabited since prehistory, the Romans established numerous outposts around present-day Slovenia. The region was later annexed by various powers, including the Holy Roman Empire and the Hapsburgs. Slovenia saw heavy casualties during World War I and was seized by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during World War II. After the war, the region was part of Yugoslavia until Slovenia (and Croatia) gained independence in 1991.

Today, this often-overlooked country is a favorite of hikers and history buffs, owing to its rugged landscape and contentious past. There’s a slew of outdoor activities here, making it the perfect destination for active travelers looking for less-crowded landscapes.

This travel guide to Slovenia can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your visit to this incredibly undervisited country.

Top 5 things to see and do in slovenia.

The historic buildings of Ljubljana along the canal in Slovenia on a sunny day

1. Wander Ljubljana

Ljubljana (pronouced lyoo-blyah-nuh) is a city built on myth and legend. According to Greek mythology, Jason and the Argonauts slayed a dragon here. Wander around the old town, gaze at the Baroque architecture, and climb the clock tower to take in the view.

2. Visit Piran

Piran is one of the most picturesque cities on the Adriatic coast. Its crown jewel is its old town, which is one of the best-preserved historical centers in the Mediterranean. Take in the historic Venetian architecture and relax in one of the many plazas.

3. Enjoy the views at Lake Bled

One of the most popular destinations in Slovenia, Lake Bled attracts thousands of visitors every year. Its main draw is the island in the middle of the lake, which is home to a 17th-century church. Visit the nearby Bled Castle overlooking the lake too (admission is 13 EUR).

4. Do some water sports

Slovenia has 7 sizeable lakes. From stand-up paddle boarding to kayaking to rappelling down waterfalls, there’s something for every fitness level and interest. Expect to pay around 15-20 EUR for a SUP or kayak rental and 65 EUR for a canyoning trip.

5. Go wine tasting

Wine lovers visiting Slovenia should head towards the Vipava Valley. Tucked beside the Italian border, the mild climate and closeness to the sea makes for ideal winemaking conditions. Expect to pay at least 150 EUR for a full day wine tour.

Other Things to See and Do in Slovenia

1. visit predjama castle.

Located one hour south of the capital, Predjama Castle was originally constructed in the 13th century. It is now a Renaissance-style castle with a Gothic façade, built right into the side of a cliff. (Fun fact: a Slovenian robber baron once called the castle home.) There’s also a “secret” tunnel that leads to the nearby Postojna Cave. The cave stretches over 24,000 meters and is open to the public (it’s the second-largest cave system in the country). Admission to the castle is 13.80 EUR, the cave is 25.80 EUR, and a combined ticket is 35.70 EUR.

2. Go hiking in Triglav National Park

The Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s only national park. Opened in 1981 and spanning 880 square kilometers (310 square miles), the park is named after the country’s tallest mountain. Thanks to its mountains, hills, lakes, waterfalls, springs, and rivers, the park is a magnet for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. You can also kayak, raft, skydive, parasail, and even scuba dive here. It’s a beautiful park and well worth a visit. To extend your time in the park, you can stay overnight in one of the mountain huts (from 80 EUR) or the lodge (from 26 EUR). It’s free to visit the park, though some attractions require small fees to visit (generally 2-5 EUR).

3. Tour Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle was built in the 16th-century and boasts some of the best views of the city. Perched on Castle Hill above the city, you can take a self-guided tour and wander the grounds yourself or take a guided tour to learn more about the castle and its history. Inside the castle are several permanent exhibitions on its history, the Museum of Puppetry, an escape room, and a café and restaurant. Admission is 13 EUR and includes a guided tour and a return funicular ticket (since the castle is up a hill).

4. Hang out in Velika Planina

Located northeast of the medieval town of Kamnik, Velika Planina translates to ‘Big Pasture Plateau’ — and that is pretty much what it is. This huge, empty plateau is dotted by a handful of small traditional wooden houses surrounded by the towering snow-capped Alps. From June through September, the houses are used by local shepherds whose livestock graze on the plateau, creating a seasonal village open to tourists. Be sure to sample some of the amazing cheeses and local dishes (like barley stew or hota , a bean and sauerkraut hotpot). To get here you either need to drive to the top or take a 10-minute gondola lift ride from Kamniska Bistrica, a nearby village, which costs 17 EUR for a roundtrip ticket.

5. Tour the Skocjan Caves

Located one hour from Ljubljana, this enormous cavern system spans over 1,000 acres. It’s considered one of the most important cave systems in the world as it is one of the largest, home to a unique ecosystem. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times and there are underground streams and rivers, massive stone formations, and a 47-meter-high bridge you can cross. The caves have been in use for millennia, appearing in written sources as far back as the 2nd-century BCE. They are awesome! Guided tours start from 18 EUR. You can also arrange day trips from Ljubljana.

6. Go skiing

For the best skiing, head to Vogel in the Lake Bohinj area. It offers both downhill slopes and cross-country trails. The regular ski season lasts from December all the way until May. Expect to pay around 10-30 EUR for a lift pass. You can also get multi-day passes that bring down the price per day. Osovje, Luce, and Dole Pri Litiji are some of the most affordable places to ski if you’re on a budget.

7. Visit the Rogatec Open-Air Museum

The Rogatec Open-Air Museum is a small but fascinating living museum that highlights what life was like in rural Slovenia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Located near the border with Croatia , you’ll learn about everything from basket weaving to blacksmithing to how livestock was kept and managed. Admission is 3 EUR. It’s a bit cheesy but if you have time (or are looking for a family-friendly activity), stop by!

8. Hike to Lovrenc Lakes

For an easy and beautiful hike that won’t take much time, head to Lovrenc Lakes. Located near Pohorje in the northeast, this one-hour trail begins at the Rogla Ski Center. Follow the wooden footpath that leads to the middle of the bog where there’s a viewing tower to climb for stunning views over across the marsh and forest. There are longer full-day trails and mountain bike paths too. Admission is free.

9. Do some underground cycling

Underground biking is one of the more unusual experiences that you may not find anywhere else. Near Mezica in the north, cyclists can explore the Slovenian underground by taking a tour underneath Mount Peca via its disused lead and zinc mine shafts. There are 5 kilometers (3 miles) of underground trails that you can explore with tours costing 40-50 EUR. You can also kayak sections of the underground mine too (tickets are the same price).

10. Drink beer from a fountain

The only beer fountain in the world is in the Slovenian town of Žalec. Located in the hop-growing capital of Slovenia, the Green Gold Fountain opened in 2016. Choose between six different beers to taste (including a green beer specially brewed just for the fountain). Simply buy a special mug for 8 EUR and sample each of the six beers on tap in the fountain. The fountain operates from April to October. Continue your beer adventure by visiting the nearby Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry in Slovenia.

11. Take a food tour

Slovenia travel costs.

The mountains and lake surrounding the iconic and famous Bled Island in Slovenia

Accommodation – Hostel dorms with 4-6-beds cost 16-22 EUR per night. Free Wi-Fi is standard and self-catering facilities are common. For a private room, expect to pay 40-50 EUR per night.

Budget hotels start at 40 EUR per night. Many budget hotels include free breakfast (but not all do) so if you’re on a budget be sure to book a hotel that includes free breakfast.

Airbnb is another budget-friendly option in Slovenia, with private rooms starting at 35 EUR per night. For an entire home or apartment, expect to pay at least 70 EUR per night (though prices average double that if you don’t book in advance).

For those traveling with a tent, campgrounds are available around the country. Prices start around 12 EUR for a basic plot without electricity. Wild camping is illegal.

Food – Slovenian cuisine is influenced by Italian, Austrian, and Balkan cooking. Spicy sausage, goulash, and schnitzel make regular appearances and are easy to find in most restaurants. Burek , a flaky pastry filled with meat or cheese, is a local favorite for when you’re on the go. Other popular dishes are žlikrofi (potato-filled ravioli) and žganci (a porridge served with sauerkraut). On the coast, there’s plenty of mussels, fish, and squid.

An inexpensive dish at a restaurant serving traditional cuisine costs around 8-11 EUR, and a pizza costs about the same. International food, such as Thai and Indian cuisine, can only be found in the capital. Expect to pay between 7-13 EUR for a main dish.

Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs 6 EUR for a combo meal, though you can get a doner kebab for around 3 EUR. A beer costs 2.50-3 EUR, a glass of wine is 3-5 EUR, and a cappuccino or latte costs 2 EUR. Burek , the flaky pastry mentioned above, can be found in cafes around the country for 2-3 EUR.

If you want to splash out, a three-course meal at a restaurant serving traditional cuisine costs around 15-18 EUR, including a drink. Prices are closer to 25 EUR for a steak dinner with a drink.

Some of my favorite places to eat and drink were Restaurant Manna, Vino & Ribe, and My Dumplings of Slovenia.

If you are planning to cook your own food, a week’s worth of groceries costs 30-40 EUR for basic staples like meat, potatoes, cheese, pasta, and seasonal produce.

Backpacking Slovenia Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget, expect to pay around 50 EUR per day. This budget covers staying in a hostel dorm, cooking all of your meals, limiting your drinking, doing free activities like walking tours and hikes, and using local transportation to get around.

On a mid-range budget of about 120 EUR, you can stay in a private Airbnb room, eat out at budget-friendly for most meals, drink a bit more, do some castle tours, go cycling or kayaking, and take some taxis to get around.

On a “luxury” budget of 225 EUR per day or more, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, take taxis everywhere, do as many activities as you want, rent a car, and book some private guided tours. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in EUR.

Slovenia Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Slovenia is one of the cheaper countries in Europe. If you’re trying to save money, it’s easy to do so, especially since most of the outdoor activities are free. Here are some ways to save money in Slovenia:

  • Take a free walking tour – Free walking tours are a fun and budget-friendly way to learn about a new destination. Ljubljana Free Tour has a free tour that covers all the major sites in the city. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!
  • Get the Ljubljana Card – This city card grants entrance to 20+ museums, a free guided tour, a trip on the funicular, a boat cruise, free public transportation, and a half-day bike rental. The card comes in 24, 48, and 72-hour versions costing 31-45 EUR respectively.
  • Ride Flixbus – Flixbus is an affordable way to get around the country (and region). They have Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, and decent enough seats for overnight and long-haul bus journeys.
  • Cook your own meals – If you’re on a tight budget, book accommodation that has a kitchen. Buying your own groceries may not be as glamorous as going out to eat, but it keeps your budget intact
  • Stay with a local – Staying with a local via Couchsurfing (or a similar sharing economy site) is a great way to not only save money but you’ll meet knowledgeable locals who can help you better understand the city and its people.
  • Walk everywhere – All of the major cities in Slovenia are quite walkable, so skip the public transportation if you want to save a few extra euros.
  • Enjoy the free spaces – There are plenty of free parks as well as many free hiking trails around the country. Save your budget and enjoy the outdoors!
  • Bring a reuseable water bottle – The tap water in Slovenia is safe to drink so bring a reusable bottle to avoid buying single-use plastic. LifeStraw makes bottles with a built-in filter so you can ensure your water is always clean and safe (it’s especially helpful if you’re out hiking).

Where to Stay in Slovenia

Slovenia has some great hostels in all the popular backpacker spots around the country. Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Slovenia:

  • Hostel Vrba (Ljubljana)
  • Aladin hostel (Ljubljana)
  • Proteus (Postojna)
  • Hostel Lukna (Mojstrana)
  • Hosteller (Bled)
  • Adriatic Piran (Piran)
  • Uni Youth Hostel (Maribor)

How to Get Around Slovenia

The beautiful sea-side town of Piran along the coast of Slovenia on a bright summer day

Public transportation – Public transportation prices vary by city but expect to pay around 1.20 EUR for a standard adult ticket.

Bus – Flixbus is one of the most budget-friendly ways to travel around Slovenia (and into neighboring countries as well). The 90-minute journey from Ljubljana to Bled is 5-9 EUR while the 75-minute bus ride from Ljubljana to Koper is 8-13 EUR. The 2.5-hour ride from Ljubljana to Zagreb, Croatia costs 12-18 EUR.

Train – Trains connecting Slovenia with other European cities run daily. Thanks to Slovenia being part of the Eurail network, it can be a great budget way to travel both internationally and domestically. This post has everything you need to know about the Eurail Pass .

Slovenia Railways is the sole company operating domestic trains. You can find the full timetable and pricing on their website. It is always better to buy your ticket in advance as prices can double if you buy them last minute.

The 2.5-hour train ride from Ljubljana to Koper costs 11 EUR while the hour-long trip from Ljubljana to Bled is 5 EUR. The trip to Zagreb, Croatia from Ljubljana takes around 2.5 hours and costs 24 EUR while the 3.5-hour journey to Graz, Austria is 13-18 EUR.

To find routes and prices for trains around Europe, use Trainline .

Fly – There are no domestic flights in Slovenia as it’s a small country.

Car rental – Car rentals cost around 25-30 EUR per day for a multi-day rental. Be sure to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) as you need one for the rental.

When to Go to Slovenia

While it is a small country, Slovenia has a very diverse climate in its three distinct regions. In the mountains of the north, there’s an alpine climate, the central lowlands have a more continental climate, and the west has a more Mediterranean climate.

Summer is the busiest and most popular time to visit. From June-August, the weather is much more reliable though prices rise slightly and there are far more tourists around (especially at Lake Bled). Expect daily highs around 23°C (73°F).

To beat the crowds, the best time to visit is during the shoulder season — either April-May or September-October. The weather is warm enough to hike and explore but you won’t have to compete with the growing number of visitors.

Unless you plan on skiing, it is probably best to skip the winter months. Slovenia gets cold and temperatures can drop below freezing.

How to Stay Safe in Slovenia

Slovenia is not just one of the safest places to visit in Europe — it’s one of the safest countries in the entire world. Ranking 6th on the Global Peace Index, Slovenia is a country where you can travel freely without any noteworthy concerns for your safety (the United States, for reference, is ranked 117th).

Of course, you still want to use some common sense. Don’t flash any valuables and keep an eye out for pickpockets in busy areas like public buses or bus/train stations. Always keep your valuables secure and out of reach just to be safe.

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though the standard precautions apply (don’t leave your drink unattended at the bar, don’t walk home alone at night intoxicated, etc.).

If you rent a car, don’t leave any valuables in the vehicle overnight. Break-ins are rare but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

If you experience an emergency, dial 112 for assistance.

While scams here are rare, to avoid getting ripped off, read my post on common travel scams to avoid.

Always trust your gut instinct. If a taxi driver seems shady, stop the cab and get out. If your hotel is seedier than you thought, get out of there.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Slovenia Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine. They search small websites and budget airlines that larger search sites tend to miss. They are hands down the number one place to start.
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!

How to Plan the Perfect Slovenia Itinerary (3-10 Days in Europe’s Hidden Gem)

I’m really glad that you clicked on this article (not just because I wrote it) because Slovenia is one hell of a destination. I’m here to help you create the ideal Slovenia itinerary for your upcoming trip so you can explore the best of Europe’s hidden gem.

Tucked between countries that overshadow Slovenia such as Austria , Croatia (you can easily combine this itinerary with your Croatia itinerary ) and Italy, it really makes one question why more people don’t visit this picturesque country when they’re so close.

Slovenia tourism has only picked up over the last couple of years and in the next few I have no doubt that this country is going to boom.

If you love the outdoors, adventure, coastal cities, charming capitals, stunning blue-green lakes, hiking, wine and good food, or even just one or two of these things then Slovenia is for you.

Let’s jump into this Slovenia travel guide that covers where to go in Slovenia, what to see in Slovenia and what to do in Slovenia for your Slovenia holidays!

Slovenia Itinerary

How this Slovenia trip itinerary works: I recommend the number of days for each destination and you choose where you want to visit! Since Slovenia is so small it really isn’t an issue choosing any destination as it only takes 4 hours to drive across the entire country so you will always spend less than half a day travelling from A to B.

Ljubljana: 2-4 Days

Ljubljana is Slovenia’s absolutely charming capital city and one of the top places to visit in Slovenia that is sure to win you over.

If you plan on visiting other parts of the country then 2 days in Ljubljana will suffice or you can opt to use Ljubljana as your base and take day trips to pretty much anywhere in the country.

DAY ONE: Take in the capital as I always suggest for every destination, by doing a free walking tour . In the afternoon be sure to time it so that you end up at the Ljubljana Castle where you have enough time to explore the castle during daylight but then be able to watch sunset from the highest spot in town.

DAY TWO: Start your morning by roaming through town once again, this capital is truly charming to just wander through. If you haven’t yet, check out the dragons on Dragon Bridge and make your way through the central market.

For the most relaxing sightseeing experience in the city then be sure to hop on a river cruise and will take you around town. Afterward, make sure to find the street art around Hostel Celica .

Leave yourself hungry for the afternoon, where you can join a food that is either self-guided or with a guide that combines both food and wine . You’ve got options though, you can skip on the food and simply go wine tasting or even beer tasting (I recommend the wine though, Slovenia has got some good stuff!).

DAY THREE: Time to get out of the city. You have the choice of a few different day trips but the most popular Slovenia day trips are to Lake Bled or Postojna. Postojna is a cave made famous for its sheer size not far from Ljubljana that is typically combined with a visit to the beautiful Predjama Castle that’s built into the side of a cliff.

Lake Bled is a destination in itself to visit but if you’re short on time it’s possible to do a day trip from Ljubljana.

Lastly, it is possible to combine a trip to Lake Bled and Postojna, just expect there to be quite a bit of driving as they are in opposite directions of Ljubljana!

DAY FOUR: Take a second day trip to one of the above mentioned or opt to visit some of the museums in the city.

Lake Bled: 1-3 Days

Lake Bled is actually just the lake, the name of the town is simply Bled, however, Lake Bled is more known. This small town is the postcard perfect destination that I’m positive you have seen a picture of before.

Bled is without a question, where you must visit when in Slovenia. It is extremely popular, especially in the summer months of July and August, but it’s still worth going to.

If you’re short on time you can get into Bled and see the lake, walk around the lake and up to a viewpoint or the castle in a day. If you have more time I highly recommend staying for 1-2 nights so that you can explore beyond the lake as there is even more beauty within walking or biking distance.

DAY ONE:  Spend your first day around the lake, that is why you’re visiting right?! Take a walk or cycle around the lake, hike up to a viewpoint, take a ride in a boat and visit the Bled Castle.

If it’s warm enough you can even go for a swim in the lake. You’ve done a few of top Slovenia attractions just in a day!

You can do all of these things with this awesome tour from Bled or Ljubljana . Oh, and don’t forget to try the famous Bled Cake! Take a pic with it and send it to me when you do!

DAY TWO: It’s time to see some of the absolutely stunning natural attractions around Bled. Rent a bike or walk to Vintgar Gorge, a magical place to walk along the boardwalk and take in the absolutely stunning views. If it a far walk but it’s possible.

If you’ve got the energy in the afternoon then head to Straža Bled where in the summer you can ride down the hill or in the winter it becomes a ski slope!

DAY THREE: Once again it’s time to get outdoors. Book a tour that will take you canoying , rafting , a combination of both , kayaking or even night canyoning !

If you opt for a half-day activity you can spend the rest of your time around the lake, perhaps having a second slice of Bled cake or trying some of the local wine with wine tasting .

Bohinj: 1-3 Days

Think Lake Bled is beautiful? That’s because you havent heard of or seen Lake Bohinj. I personally think Bohinj is one of the best places in Slovenia. It’s a region just twenty-some kilometres from Bled that offers a much more relaxed atmosphere compared to Bled thanks to fewer visitors.

Bohinj, like Bled, in amongst the Julian Alps and offers itself as a prime destination in the summer for swimming, hiking, kayaking and even horseback riding with blue-green waters shimmering in the lake.

It’s possible to visit Bohinj in a day (that’s what I did) and have yourself based in Bled or there are now two hostels in Bohinj (be sure to see if they’re open though if you’re travelling here outside of summer)!

DAY ONE: If you only have one day I would advise you to simply walk around the lake and take in the beauty. If it’s warm enough you can jump into the water for a swim or some kayaking.

I walked around half of the lake and fit in a hike through Mostnica Gorge which was breathtaking with the fall colours when I went. Lastly, it is possible to fit in a hike to Savica waterfall if you really want to see it. Otherwise, just enjoying relaxing by the lake!

DAY TWO: On your second day explore mount Vogel. In the wintertime it’s a ski resort area to hit the slopes but in other seasons it’s awesome for hiking. You can actually hike all the way up for the best view over Lake Bohinj or you can opt to take the cable car up.

DAY THREE: This day is just in case you prefer to explore Bohinj at a more leisurely pace. There is a lot of walking/hiking on both of the days above.

slovenia tourism youtube

Postojna: 1/2 Day

Postojna is actually a massive cave and one of Slovenia’s most popular attractions. Don’t dismiss it just because it’s a cave. That’s what I did at first, thinking that I’ve seen a ton of caves and that this one wouldn’t be special. I couldn’t have been more wrong!

Postojna cave is the largest in Europe and is 24km long. Yes, you read that right. But don’t worry you’re definitely not walking that, instead you get to ride this awesome train through the cave with parts that you get off to walk through (obviously only the best parts!).

You can find more information on Postojna cave on the official website .

To visit Postojna cave you can take a bus on your own or take a half day tour which is typically combined with a visit to the really cool castle that’s built into the side of a cliff, Predjama Castle. I recommend doing both.

slovenia tourism youtube

Soca Valley: 1-2 Days

The Soca Valley is a beautiful region in the northwest of Slovenia that is home to one of the most beautiful rivers in all of Europe, the Soca River. Travellers venture to this region to participate in adventure activities in the river and to take in the beauty. But this tranquil spot was once home to some of the most burtal battles during WWI.

Bovec is the most popular area in the region and an ideal spot to base yourself. You can still see the beauty of the region on day trips from Ljubljana or Bled.

DAY ONE: No need for an itinerary here, just pick which activities you want to do: rafting , kayaking , cayoning or rock climbing !

DAY TWO: This is really only possible if you have a car. Visit a waterfall, Boka, drive the highest road in Slovenia, Mangart Saddle, visit the country’s largest alpine lake, Krn Lake and check out Tolmin Gorge.

slovenia tourism youtube

Piran: 2-3 Days

Piran is a beautiful coastal town nudged betwen Croatia and Italy (sounds awesome already, right?). Visitors and locals alike flock here in the summer which is the peak travel season to hit the beaches and enjoy some coastal, Mediterranean vibes.

However, this coastal town is still pretty and just as charming (perhaps more so without the tourists) in other seasons.

DAY ONE: Start your time in Piran with a walking tour (as I always suggest!). In the afternoon spend some more time around town, taking in Tartini Square from the top of the bell tower, relaxing by the harbour and trying more of the local dishes.

DAY TWO: Hit the beaches for a day of relaxation. If you want some activity try the walk from Piran to Strunjan and don’t miss sunset!

DAY THREE: Join an e-bike tour where you’ll enjoy more food and wine tastings and visit the best view in Piran where you can see as far as the Dolomites in Italy, the Alps and Croatia.

slovenia tourism youtube

Maribor: 1-2 Days

Maribor is Slovenia’s second largest city after the capital of Ljubljana but Maribor is only a third of a size. The biggest draw to Maribor is one thing: wine. But that’s not the only draw! This charming city is more like a large town and is the gateway to Pohorje where you can get out in nature with hiking, skiing and great views.

DAY ONE: Keep it simple: explore the town and drink all the wine. Tours offered for this depart from Ljubljana.

DAY TWO: Visit the Old Vine House (here you’ll see the oldest grapevine in the world), stroll through Lent (the oldest part of the town) and the Jewish quarter and see the views from the top of Pohorje.

Best Time to Visit Slovenia

There really is no best time to travel to Slovenia as different areas of the country have their prime weather during varying times of the year and some of the country’s top spots are ideal for your trip based on what you want to do.

Summer (June-August) is by far the most popular time to visit Slovenia. The capital, Ljubljana, Lake Bled, the coastal city of Piran and the Soca Valley become busy for their outdoor activities.

If you’re planning on visiting during the summer be sure to book accommodation in advance and expect higher prices but great weather (30°C+, 87°F+ but 5-10 degrees cooler in the northeast in places such as Bled).

Fall (September-November) is perhaps the most beautiful time to visit Slovenia as the fall foliage is possibly some of the best (I’m from Canada so I know what good fall foliage looks like!) in all of Europe.

Temperatures will drop, expect 10-mid 20’s Celsius (50-77°F) with cooler temperatures as November approaches and in the northeast. Rainfall also picks up but won’t ruin a trip. Prices will get cheaper, many outdoor activities such as hiking are even better in the cooler weather and there will be fewer people, plus it’s wine harvesting season!

slovenia tourism youtube

If you’re not visiting Slovenia to hit the slopes then it’s recommended that you skip this tiny country in the winter months (December-February) as the temperatures drop with an average temperature of -2°C (28°F). Slovenia is absolutely a gem of a destination for skiing with many ski resorts but it’s definitely not ideal for sightseeing.

Spring in Slovenia (March-May) is the most unpredictable season. Temperatures vary significantly as the weather changes from winter to summer but May typically brings bright, warm, sunny days with lower prices just before peak season begins.

Slovenia Travel Costs (How Much You Should Budget)

Slovenia can be a cheap country or it can be an expensive country. You can expect prices to be closer to Western Europe than Eastern Europe prices but you can keep costs down if you plan on doing more outdoor activities, leaving you only to pay for food and accommodation (cuz hiking is free!).

A backpacking budget of €50-100 per day is realistic with hostels costing between €15-20, meals, if eating budget meals, will be around €5 and travel between destinations varies with buses costing as low as €2 but as much as €20. This budget doesn’t allow too much frivolous spending on nicer restaurants or tours.

A mid-range budget of €150-200 per day is ideal if you want to stay in hotels (€50-100 per night) eat nicer meals out (€10-30) and enjoy some day trips (€35-100).

A high-end budget of €300+ per day will have you staying in high-end hotels (€150-200 per night), eating nicer meals (€20-50), being able to do whatever tours or day trips you want and overall just live the life!

How to get to Slovenia

As a small country in the centre of Europe Slovenia is very easy to get too. There is only one international airport in the country, Jože Pučnik Airport (Ljubljana Airport) that is 30 minutes outside of the capital.

Flying into Slovenia is pricey though, but you may catch a deal as two budget airlines (Easy Jet and Wizz Air) do fly into the country.

A cheaper option is to fly to a neighbouring city such as Zagreb in Croatia or Trieste in Italy or even Venice and then take transport to Slovenia. This option may involve buses and trains and transfers but GoOpti provides direct transfers for affordable prices across Slovenia and the surrounding regions.

It is also possible to get to Slovenia from surrounding countries by bus or train, both of which are frequent.

slovenia tourism youtube

Getting Around Slovenia

Slovenia is a beautiful country with great roads to drive through. It’s ideal especially if you’re taking a road trip through any of the surrounding countries too such as Croatia , Austria or Italy.

More budget friendly options include taking buses or trains. Train travel in Slovenia is easy and consists of short rides since the country is so small. Tickets can be bought at stations and certain travel agencies.

Bus travel in Slovenia is even cheaper and will get you to everywhere you need to go, including the smaller towns in the countryside. Tickets can be bought at bus stations or on the bus. You can find more information and routes on GetByBus.com .

Where to go in Slovenia

Here are some of the best places to visit in Slovenia. I’ll be honest, I haven’t been to all of these Slovenia destinations but I’m including them because they just may be perfect for your Slovenia itinerary.

How Long to Spend in Slovenia?

Believe it or not, some people do Slovenia as a day trip and say they have seen the country in just a day! To each their own but you can thank me later for recommending that you stay a little longer in Slovenia.

Most visitors stay for 3-5 days, however, staying a week means you can see the country more leisurely or explore beyond the hottest tourist spots.

Personally, I stayed for 6 days and found it perfect. I was visiting in October so I skipped on the summer destinations such are Piran but adored the fall foliage in Bled.

That’s it from me, enjoy your Slovenia vacation!

The intermittent Govic waterfall on the north side of Lake Bohinj, viewing the Adriatic from the Crni Prst-Rodica-Vogel ridge walk, and views from the Rudnica summit are some of my favourites. Best wishes.

Slovenia has so many beutiful corners, that is true 🖤 Thanks for these hints, will look at them as soon we’re out of this Corona mess 🙈 Also for this video we had to work with the material we had at home (so none of the footage was ment to be in a video) and maaany others are just so bad, we didn’t want to include them 😅 All the best to you too 💙💙

11 things to know before booking a trip to Slovenia

Plan the perfect trip to Slovenia with these tips on booking, packing and activities © Olesya Baron / Shutterstock

I’ve been writing about Slovenia for Lonely Planet now for more than a decade.

On every trip, I’ve found Slovenians to be highly welcoming and proud of their country, particularly of Slovenia’s commitment to the environment and sustainability. English is widely spoken and you’re unlikely to have any problems hitting the ground running.

That said, a little local knowledge can help grease the wheels and make a trip to this beautiful country more rewarding and pleasurable. Here are some ideas and tips for how to prepare before you get there.

1. Book hotels and popular restaurants well in advance

By now, word has traveled far and wide about Slovenia’s immense physical beauty and its emerging rep as a high-end foodie destination. That means it’s no longer possible simply to turn up and expect to find accommodation bargains or tables at top restaurants. Ljubljana is popular year-round, so start your room hunt the moment you decide to visit. The same goes for Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj and the towns and resorts along the country’s Adriatic coastline. These all can get full to bursting in high season (July and August).

Top Slovenian chefs like Ana Roš, and her Michelin-starred restaurant Hiša Franko in Kobarid, have got gourmands around the world salivating at the very prospect of visiting the country. Book any restaurant with a whiff of foodie cred at least a month in advance.

2. Tack on an extra couple of days to your trip

Many travelers, regrettably, allocate just a long weekend or perhaps a week at most here. That may be enough time to get a sense of Ljubljana and possibly make a side trip to Lake Bled or the Adriatic coast, but it’s not enough for taking in all the sights Slovenia has to offer. The country may be small, but it packs in tremendous geographic diversity. After you’ve hit the main highlights, consider at minimum visiting the Soča Valley , the Goriška Brda wine communities, and the spectacular caves and landscapes of the Karst Region.

And certainly don’t overlook the east of the country, around cities like Maribor and Ptuj, which sees far fewer visitors than the Alpine and coastal regions of the west. In interacting with many, many travelers over the years, I’ve never once heard a visitor on returning home say they wished they’d planned to spend fewer days here.

3. Call ahead when visiting wineries

A visit to a Slovenian winery, with a chance to meet the winemakers and sample the grape, is a highlight of any visit to the country. Prime tasting areas include Goriška Brda, Metlika, Brežice, Maribor, and many others. That said, resist the temptation simply to pull up at a winery gate and expect a tasting (as you might in other countries). It’s better to phone in advance or book a tasting over the winery website.

4. Take advantage of discount cards

Travelers are often reluctant to invest in city tourism cards out of skepticism for how much money they’ll actually save. In Slovenia, that's a mistake, as these cards can represent good value. The Ljubljana Card , sold at tourist information centers, includes free entry to many museums as well as unlimited travel on city buses, a free funicular to Ljubljana Castle , and bus transfer to Ljubljana Airport.

Additionally, students and people over 65 often qualify for discounted admission at museums and other attractions. When traveling with kids, look out for special “family” admission prices for up to two adults and two children.

5. Learn some Slovenian phrases

Slovenians are polyglots. In addition to English, many people speak German and Italian. However, it doesn’t hurt at all (and may even open some doors) if you can muster a few common phrases in Slovenian. Start off with dober dan , meaning “good day.” Prosim means “please,” and hvala is the way to say ”thank you.”

6. Get chatting with locals

Many Slovenians can be reserved in their daily interactions, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t friendly. Feel free to say hello to or ask questions of anyone you might meet. Most people will happily engage and pass along helpful information. Making contact goes beyond merely saying hi; it’s a great way to learn about the country. Don’t be surprised if a casual greeting leads to a longer chat over beer, coffee or schnapps. It’s all part of the culture.

7. Pack clothes for the outdoors

Slovenians enjoy getting out into the fresh air. Even if you’re just planning a city break in Ljubljana, you never know when you might get tempted by or pulled out on a hike. That means it’s best to bring along comfortable walking shoes (or boots if you’re planning on spending time in the higher elevations) as well as rain gear or a windbreaker (or whatever might be appropriate for the season). That said, don’t worry about packing too many fancy clothes. Slovenians aren’t overly dogmatic about fashion. When in doubt, go smart casual; even the most famous restaurants in the country keep it pretty chill.

8. Walk or cycle when you can

Slovenians love their cars, but wherever possible they often prefer to walk, hike or bike (rather than simply jump behind the wheel). It helps that well-marked walking and cycling trails crisscross just about every city, town and region in the land. Moving around on your own power isn't just a good way to keep fit, it's often faster and more convenient than waiting for public transportation . Ljubljana is a prime cycling territory, but pedestrians need to watch out so that they don't accidently walk into a designated cycling lane. That’s sure to earn a shrill bicycle bell and, potentially, a stiff word or two.

9. Be aware of ticks in open areas

Like much of Central Europe, Slovenia's forests and grasslands are filled with ticks. On hikes or treks, use repellents and cover up exposed skin. Always check your legs and arms after any prolonged hike or camping in the open air. Ticks can carry two serious diseases: tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease. The latter can sometimes be treated with antibiotics; the former is rarer but can only be avoided by prior vaccination. Mosquitoes can also be an annoyance around lakes and ponds in warmer months. Bring a good mosquito repellent just in case.

10. Drive with caution in winter

Winters often bring treacherous ice and snow to Slovenian roadways, particularly in higher-elevation areas. Indeed, from November to April, many roads may be closed or impassable. These include the country's highest alpine circuit, the 1611m (5285ft)  Vršič Pass , which typically shuts down in late October and reopens only in late April.  The Traffic Information Center website has updated information on nationwide road hazards, closures and weather delays.

11. Know your limits before hitting the trails

Sadly, every tourist season brings news of a tragic accident, where someone misjudges the risks and takes unnecessary chances. While some Slovenian trekking routes are well-trodden – the country has more than 9000km (5590 miles) of trails – it's very easy to get off the beaten path, particularly at higher elevations.

It goes without saying (but it's worth repeating): always make sure you’re carrying the right equipment and be sure to seek local guidance before setting out. Consider hiring a local guide if in doubt. Let people know where you’re going and be mindful of changing weather conditions. If you have more-ambitious plans to tackle the multiple via ferrata  routes (trails with permanent cables and ladders), bring along your own gear, like harnesses, lanyards, gloves and helmets. In any emergency on the trails, contact the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia (GRZS) by dialing 112.

LJUBLJANA: 25 Best Things to Do & Places to Visit

LJUBLJANA: 25 Best Things to Do & Places to Visit

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

We got stranded in Ljubljana.

We were supposed to fly out of Slovenia, but the airline we booked filed for bankruptcy and cancelled all their flights — including ours. It definitely threw a wrench into our plans because we were backpacking around Europe with a limited budget. While we were trying to figure out our next steps, we decided to extend our stay in Ljubljana. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Prior to this, we had seen only a little bit of Ljubljana because it was raining a lot during most of our stay and we focused more on the Slovenian countryside. But staying longer meant we had more time to explore the city and enjoy more of what it has to offer!

Yes, we got stranded in Ljubljana. But it turned out to be a good thing!

Here are 25 of the best things to do and places to visit in Ljubljana. We also added a sample Ljubljana itinerary in the end.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

THINGS TO DO

Old town walking tour.

Ljubljana’s old town cradles several centuries-old structures that mostly reflect Roman and Medieval design. The historic center fuels the tourism industry of the city. You may do this on your own or by joining a guided tour, giving you a deeper insight into the rich history of both Ljubljana and Slovenia as a whole while exploring with a group.

Here are the usual stops:

Ljubljana Cathedral

  • Town Hall (Mestna hiša)
  • Triple Bridge
  • Preseren Square
  • Dragon Bridge

Central Market

There are FREE walking tours to choose from. Although this is free, it’s still recommended to give a tip at the end of the tour, especially if the guide did a great job. It depends on you how much you want to give, but it’s usually around €5 each. Feel free to add more if you really enjoyed it. For more info, check Ljubljana Free Tour .

Schedule: 11AM (Daily; afternoon tours are added during peak months) Meetup Point: Prešeren Square

However, some free walking tour groups can be so big that you’ll get a difficult time hearing what the guide is saying. If you want to be in a smaller group and you have money to spare, you can just join a paid tour. Klook is offering a package that has Ljubljana Castle in the itinerary. It also includes roundtrip funicular (cable car) tickets.

River Cruise

slovenia tourism youtube

The Ljubljanica River is the most important body of water in this part of Slovenia. Historically, it aided trade and commerce in the city back in the Roman period. Today, boats shuttle tourists who choose to go sightseeing on a river cruise. The relaxing journey lasts for 45 minutes. This is perfect for those who are not fond of too much walking.

Schedule: 10AM, 11AM, 1PM, 2PM, 5PM, 6PM, 7PM, 8PM (Daily, April – November); 1PM, 2PM, 3PM (Daily, November – March) Price: €10 (Adult); €5 (Children 4-12 y/o) Boarding Spot: Ribji Trg Pier

Stand-up Paddling

slovenia tourism youtube

Aside from the cruise, another activity while in the vicinity is stand up paddling down the calm waters of Ljubljanica River. This is perfect for adventurous travelers, even beginners! Before you proceed, you will be briefed first on the basics of stand up paddling. You will be joined by your instructor as you explore the city center on a paddleboard. The package is inclusive of photos.

Schedule: Twice a day (Morning: 9AM or 10AM; Afternoon: 5PM or 6PM) Price: €39 (inclusive of instructor fee, equipment rental, and photos) Departure Point: Špica Cafe

slovenia tourism youtube

Being at the crossroads of Slavic, Germanic, and Roman cultures, Ljubljana’s cuisine is a melting pot of flavors. Its food scene offers a wide array of international dishes — Pannonian, Mediterranean, Balkan, and Alpine among others. If you are seeking gastronomic adventure, the city is laden with restaurants and food places that will make your visit worthwhile.

If you want to learn more about the food scene of Slovenia, a guided tour will take you to places where you get to taste different dishes and sample some wines while listening to stories and information shared by your local guide.

Urban Train

slovenia tourism youtube

In Ljubljana, you’ll find several electric-powered vehicles roaming the historical core. One of them is the Urban , a train that can take you to the key tourist spots in the city from the Town Hall and Ljubljana Castle to Krakovo and back to Old Town.

The ride also provides a pre-recorded narration of information and history per stop. A roundtrip takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. You can alight whenever you want and board again using the same ticket, just like how hop-on-hop-off bus functions. Keep your ticket and don’t lose it. The ticket is only valid for that day.

Schedule: 11AM, 1PM, 3PM & 5PM (departs every two hours) Fare: €8 (Regular) Departure Point: Town Hall

Day Trips from Ljubljana

slovenia tourism youtube

Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in Europe. In fact, you can actually explore it in a day — getting from one end to another. Located at the heart of the country, Ljubljana, the capital, is also the choice jump-off point of travelers to other destinations in Slovenia. Here are some of the attractions in Slovenia outside Ljubljana.

  • Lake Bled. Located northwest of Ljubljana, Lake Bled is a famous tourist destination boasting an island that nestles ancient buildings; the most prominent is the 17th-century Church of the Assumption. Bled Castle, located on the northern portion of the lake, is visible from the island.
  • Postojna Cave. Located southwest of Ljubljana, Postojna Cave is one of the longest cave systems in the country. This tourist-favorite karst cave features many interesting stalagmites, stalactites, cave “halls”, and other rock formations. It even has its own cave train!
  • Predjama Castle. Also located southwest of Ljubljana, this Renaissance castle piques the interest of tourists for its unusual location — built within the opening of the cave. The original castle was destroyed and underwent reconstructions. The castle that we see today was built in 1570.
  • Skocjan Caves. Located further southwest of Ljubljana, Skocjan Caves system is one of the largest in the world. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for its natural and cultural merits. And in 1991, it was listed in Ramsar’s Wetlands of International Importance.

For more day trip options, we compiled some of the best destinations in Slovenia in another post. You can find it here: BEST SLOVENIA DESTINATIONS!

PLACES TO VISIT

Ljubljana castle.

slovenia tourism youtube

Ljubljana Castle dates back to the 11th-century. Constructed atop a hill, this imposing historic structure is not hard to spot, making it one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The castle grounds present a panoramic view of both the old town and the commercial city center.

Address: Grajska planota 1, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Daily)

There are three ways to get to the castle:

  • By hiking. For those who are fit and love exploring on foot, you can take this option. You can either do it by yourself or join a group tour.
  • By Urban tourist train. We’ve explained how the Urban Train works. In summary, it’s like a loop bus. Fare: €8.
  • By funicular. The funicular is a cable car. The lower station is located at the foot of the hill. It’s close to the Central Market. Fare: €2.20 (one-way); €4 (roundtrip).

Exploring the castle grounds requires no fee. But if you want to enter other establishments such as the watchtower, Chapel of St. George, Museum of Puppets, and/or the Slovenian History Exhibition, you need to pay the entrance fee. The regular ticket is €13. This amount is inclusive of the admission fees for the castle’s viewing tower, Virtual Castle, Museum Puppetry, Slovenian History, and the two-way funicular fare.

For other special attractions, you also need to pay additional fees to experience them — Escape Castle, Behind Bars Guided Tour, or the Time Machine Guided Tour. See the rates for other tickets here!

Ljubljana Cathedral graces the Cyril and Methodius Square, commanding attention with its green dome and twin belfries. It is visible from nearby Town Hall, Central Market, and Ljubljana Castle.

Its history dates back to the 12th-century when the original church follows the Romanesque design. It was reconstructed with Gothic design architecture after a fire destroyed the first one. The present-day Baroque design was constructed in the 18th century. The interior features painted frescoes by Italian Baroque painter, Giulio Quaglio. It’s also notable for its sculpted bronze doors.

Address: Dolničarjeva ulica 1, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: CLOSED from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM Entrance Fee: €2 (church interior); FREE (taking photos outside)

Town Hall (Mestna Hiša)

slovenia tourism youtube

The Town Hall is the seat of the City Municipality of Ljubljana. It features Venetian facade, grand staircase, and four exhibition halls or galleries.

The Baroque structure is located at the Town Square, which also bears the replica of the Robba Fountain with an obelisk. If you want to see the original fountain, you can visit the National Gallery. The Town Hall’s origin can be traced back to the 15th century.

Address: Stritarjeva ulica 2, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM Entrance Fee: FREE

Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)

slovenia tourism youtube

First constructed in 1842, the wider central bridge (main bridge) used to be a medieval wooden bridge. Today, two narrower bridges flank the main bridge — one on either side. These side bridges were meant for pedestrians; consequently, this addition to the original structure gave rise to one of Ljubljana’s famous landmarks.

The Triple Bridge links the historic center to the modern business district separated by the Ljubljanica River. From the Central Market (old town side), the bridges lead to Prešeren Square (downtown side).

Prešeren Square

slovenia tourism youtube

Prešeren Square is Ljubljana’s central square. It used to be a busy crossroad until it was transformed into a square in the 19th century. This elliptical-shaped square is a car-free zone and a popular events venue. This is also the usual meeting point for free walking tours.

It greets tourists who pass through the Triple Bridge coming from and going to the old town. It features a monument dedicated to France Prešeren, the country’s national poet. Surrounding the square grand buildings such as the old palaces and the red 17th-century Franciscan Church of the Annunciation.

Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most)

slovenia tourism youtube

Built in 1901, Dragon Bridge is regarded as the most beautiful Vienna Secession style bridge and protected as a technical monument. Following its construction style and material, this reinforced concrete arch bridge mainly serves vehicles.

The bridge got its name from the four imposing dragon statues that became one of the defining features of the city.

slovenia tourism youtube

If you want to get a glimpse of Ljubljana’s culture through its local products, the Central Market will give you more than what you are willing to bargain for. The market stretches between the Dragon Bridge and the Triple Bridge, consisting of an outdoor market, an indoor market, food stalls, and shops lining the old town side river banks of Ljubljanica.

From March to October, there’s a weekly open-kitchen event where chefs prepare and serve different international cuisines. This happens every Friday at Central Market’s Pogačarjev trg square area.

Address: Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje 6, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: Outdoor Market 6AM – 6PM (Weekdays/Summer), 6AM – 4PM (Saturday/Summer), 6AM – 4PM (Monday – Saturday/Winter); Indoor Pogačarjev trg Square 7AM – 4PM (Weekdays), 7AM – 2PM (Saturdays); Indoor Plečnik’s Colonnade 7AM – 4PM (Weekdays), 7AM – 2PM (Saturdays); CLOSED (Sundays)

House of Illusions

slovenia tourism youtube

The museum sets up over 40 interactive exhibits that are meant to trick the guests through illusions. You’ll encounter holograms, puzzles, and the Rotated Room. The Playroom will challenge your problem-solving skills with logical games. Some other highlights include the Mirror Room, Vortex Tunnel, and the Anti-Gravity Room. Book this tour through Klook for convenience. All you need to do is present the voucher emailed to you once at the museum.

✅ RESERVE A TICKET HERE!

Located south of Ljubljana Castle, Park Špica is actually a river embankment of Ljubljanica that was formerly a beach spot until it was transformed into a park.

There’s a long footbridge nearby that is made for pedestrians and cyclists. The park’s relaxing atmosphere and beautiful view attract locals and tourists alike.

Botanical Garden

Crossing the footbridge from Park Špica, you will reach the Botanical Garden (University of Ljubljana Botanical Garden). Established in 1810, it is said to be the oldest botanical garden in Southeastern Europe and the most important in Slovenia. It nurtures more than 4,500 species and subspecies of plants and trees, earning the title “The Green Soul of Ljubljana”. It also has a glasshouse and tea house where you can rest after a refreshing stroll.

Address: Ižanska cesta 15, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: 7AM – 7PM (Daily, April – May & September – October); 7AM – 5PM (Daily, November – March); 7AM – 8PM (Daily, June – August) Entrance Fee: €2.80 (Regular); €1.30 (Reduced)

Plečnik House

If Barcelona has Antoni Gaudi, Ljubljana has Jože Plečnik. A native of Slovene, he had a pivotal role in shaping the city’s architectural landscape and leaving his marks in many historic structures that have major cultural significance in Slovenia. His influence went beyond his birthplace and extended to Vienna and Prague.

In Slovenia, he designed numerous buildings and sites — Triple Bridge, Central Market, Ljubljanica River embankments, Slovene National and University Library, squares, etc.

Plečnik House will let you take a peek into his personal and professional life. It houses many of his memorabilia and works, including sketches and plans. The house is also well-preserved and appears exactly as it was before he passed on. You can explore on your own or join a guided tour.

Address: 6, Karunova ulica 4, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Tuesday – Sunday); CLOSED (Mondays and holidays) Entrance Fee: €6 (Regular); €4 (Reduced)

Križanke Church and Monastery

The Križanke Church and Monastery has a long history of building and rebuilding from the 13th century to the 18th century.

In 1945, it ceased to function as a monastery and was transformed into a cultural venue, particularly for Ljubljana Festival. The remodeling project started in 1952 designed and completed by Jože Plečnik.

The complex contains an open-air theater within the deserted monastery, the Križanke Church, the Devil’s Courtyard, and the Knight’s Hall. The nearest landmark is the St. James Bridge.

Address: Trg francoske revolucije, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: No definite time. It’s usually close unless there’s an event or festival, usually in summer. You can still admire it from outside the complex.

Congress Square

slovenia tourism youtube

Located near the historical Cobblers Bridge, the Kongresni Trg (Congress Square) is one of the significant squares in Ljubljana.

It was built in the 19th century on the grounds where the Capuchin monastery once stood. The original square was smaller, but its purpose as a venue for important ceremonies and gathering still continues up to today. In fact, it got its name from the monumental Congress of Ljubljana. The square features Park Zvezda (Star Park).

Other major buildings in the vicinity are the University of Ljubljana Palace, Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity, Philharmonic Hall, and the Slovene Society Building.

Republic Square

Located just a short walk west of Congress Square is the Trg Republike (Republic Square) . The planning started in 1960 and designed by one of Plečnik’s students, Edvard Ravnikar. The modernist-style square is the largest in the city and a symbol of modern Ljubljana.

It is where the nation’s independence was declared in June 1991, making it the most notable square in Slovenia. From the square, you can spot the National Assembly Building and Cankar Hall.

Tivoli Park

Sprawling out over five square kilometers at the heart of Ljubljana, Tivoli City Park is the largest park in the city. It was conceptualized in the first quarter of the 19th century by Jean Blanchard, a French engineer. It is peppered with statues and fountains and path walks meander through the lush greenery.

Nestled inside the park are Tivoli Castle, Tivoli Sports Hall, National Museum of Contemporary History, and Jakopič Promenade — a scenic open-air gallery designed by well-respected Slovene architect, Jože Plečnik.

Krakovo is a historic district situated on the left side of the Ljubljanica River, near St. James Bridge and Križanke. Although stretched out on the downtown side of the river, it retains its medieval-period atmosphere where people thrive on gardening and fishing.

The district is the offspring of the marriage between the old and the new. The district still supplies the Central Market with fresh produce.

Metelkova Mesto

This former military base was saved from being demolished by a group of artists and intellectuals known as the Metelkova Network when they started transforming the complex into an alternative art and cultural hub.

The complex is the venue for various activities and events, attended by an interesting mix of crowd. This is one of the hippest places to be. Metelkova Mesto is just three blocks away from Ljubljana’s main train station.

National Museum of Slovenia

Located near Tivoli Park, beside the Russian Embassy, the National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest in the country. It shares the same roof with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History inside a 19th-century neo-Renaissance palace. It displays a great collection of archaeological artifacts.

Permanent exhibits are Prehistoric Treasures of Slovenia, Roman Stories from the Crossroads, and The Roman Lapidarium.

Address: Muzejska ulica 1, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily, Sunday – Wednesday & Fridays); 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM (Thursdays & Saturdays); CLOSED (January 1, May 1, November 1 & December 25) Entrance Fee: €6 (Regular); €4 (Reduced)

National Gallery

Also located in the vicinity of Tivoli Park and National Museum of Slovenia is the National Gallery. Founded in 1918, the museum is relocated from Kresija Palace to its current 19th-century host building.

The museum houses almost 600 permanent art pieces from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, the largest in Slovenia. The original Robba Fountain, named Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers, is preserved and maintained here. The National Gallery also has a library, a shop, and a cafe.

Address: Prešernova cesta 24, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Tuesday – Sunday EXCEPT Thursdays); 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Thursdays); CLOSED (Mondays and holidays) Entrance Fee: €10 (Regular); €5 (Reduced)
