Live reviews

We have loved Hussy Hicks every time we have seen, except this time the venue was way too large, only 110 tickets sold for the event, something was too loud as you couldn't hear Jules sing or understand what she was saying. Also, although Kristie Lee was very good, she sang with the girls for at least 30 minutes and the songs were down beat and no where near the energy we have experienced with the girls in recent shows at Blues on Broadbeach etc. We were disappointed as we had taken friends with us and we highly praised the bands other shows.

The band is great in small venues or small shows but Seagulls Stardust room was terrible, and the lights and smoke machine were way too much, nearly needed sunglasses!

Sorry my review couldn't have been 100% positive.

Hussy Hicks Release Their New EP ‘Same Boat' And Announce A Suite Of New Australian Tour Dates

hussy hicks tour dates

The Hussy Hicks new EP is a powerful three-track (plus bonus single) collection that is as meaningful as it is beautiful, accompanied by its own iOS & Android mobile gaming app.

The Hussy Hicks mobile gaming app not only guarantees hours of fun playing time, but is also a certified chart breaker, hitting No.2 on the Apple app charts, beating out Grand Theft Auto, and only narrowly missing out on top stop to Minecraft!

Released alongside the EP today is the third and final track from the EP ‘ I Am Not a Dog ’, a notable blues number, stepped back in tempo but harnessing the group’s true melding of folk and blues-rock perfectly. with heavy grooves, slide guitar riffs and defiant vocals.

The track is a reflection of the past two years of ‘hybrid captivity’ between COVID and natural disasters, which has destroyed the music industry and a reflection of society’s pronounced bias towards sport over arts. As the music and arts sectors were decimated by COVID, with 20 people gigs not allowed to go ahead and festivals canceled, ten’s of thousands were allowed shoulder to shoulder at major sporting events.

“I am not A Dog’ has been a kind of an outlet valve for all the anger and anxiety I experienced from the complete decimation of our industry and my career path - in particular trying to deal with continual cancellations of gigs and live music events while major sports events were continuing at a rate of knots with 100% capacity.” Said Hussy Hicks’ vocalist, Leesa Gentz.

“So it has somewhat of an anarchist punk sentiment because we’ve all been so contained and so compliant it just felt good to write and play something contrary to that. For me, when I sing the song it’s about not staying in the box, pushing boundaries and gender norms and questioning the things that don’t make sense. A lot of our songs are deliberately positive and uplifting so it was really good on a personal level to just write something super angry - it’s loud, a bit obnoxious and pretty empowering.”

The first track and namesake of the EP ‘ Same Boat ’ was released alongside the group’s first video game, which sees players controlling an inflatable boat of Hussy Hicks downstream escaping and avoiding a myriad of obstacles.

Ironically in a cruel twist of fate, the first song/game was released on the same day that the Hussy Hicks community was ravaged by the Northern Rivers Floods, which saw the couple lose their house and recording studio to the raging waters, before paddling a kayak to rescue their elderly neighbour from the rising floodwater until further help arrived.

The Hussy Hicks app is the perfect metaverse for music lovers , it not only features tour dates, special insights and band news, but three playable 8-bit video games, one for each song off the EP.

Each game is tailored specifically to its matched song, creating a fun cohesive experience that pairs music and gaming perfectly in unison, and will have gamers and music fans alike returning to cement their place on the game’s leader boards.

The second game released alongside ‘Capitulation’ is a choose-your-own-adventure, as the group road trips to their next festival performance. Players will be able to select their own journey, with over 100 unique narrative paths based on player choices, and 18 different endings offered, including a gig inside a dragon's stomach!

The third game, ich pairs with the new release 'I Am Not a Dog' – sees the Hussy Hicks battling against their perfect antagonist and alter-egos, the Hussy Hacks.

hussy hicks tour dates

By Chris Lambie

The opening night of a music festival is all about getting in, grabbing your drinks tickets and noting headliners’ play times. You notice a small stage to where punters are purposefully gravitating. Before you know it, you’ve discovered a new favourite act and have to fight for space at their next performances. That’s how I first got to know and love Hussy Hicks. I imagine the same process for many Bluesfest fans who have seen them climb ever closer to the top of the bill.

The Blues and Roots core duo of Leesa Gentz (vocals, percussion) and Julz Parker (guitars/vocals) have been working their musical magic over the past decade and a half. With a swathe of recordings, awards, national and international tours under their belt, they’re not about to let adversity stop the creative flow. Coming off the cancelled plans of ‘pandemic time’, they faced further challenges from the devastating floods in their Northern Rivers base. They tell me, “We had packed the van with our basic stage gear in case the driveway got cut off. But everything else went under water. Our studio’s 3.2 m off the ground but the water went over the roof. We lost all our merch which is annoying. And losing all our vinyl is such a punch in the face because it’s such a beautiful thing and takes so long to make.” The pair made it to Europe not long after and as regular performers there over many years, they were fortunate to have some equipment stored there. Waiting for them since the cancellation of their 2020 visit.

They finally got to show off music from their album of that year, Gather Up The People, plus new tracks from an upcoming EP. Ironically, the first single from the EP ‘Same Boat’ was released on the same day that Parker went to a stranded neighbour’s aid in floodwaters in a kayak. (Images can be seen online.) Gentz admits to mentally ‘hearing’ lyrics from the song at that moment. “When Julz paddled off over to his house, there was definitely a bit of ‘I’m paddling, I’m paddling…’ going on. The song was written in that really early lockdown period, about nothing specifically. But no matter where you were in your life, certainly as musical creators, we were all stuck in our houses and we weren’t allowed to go to our jobs. As a songwriter it’s good to kinda get it out.”

Next track ‘Capitulation’ features the rhythm section of bass player Tracy Bassy and drummer Ali Foster. Parker’s signature guitar drives a lively riff-laden hook.  Musically, they agree, “It’s a banger’. On the subject matter, “For probably the last five, six years even, we’ve been herded into these little groups – where we formulate our opinions based on what our friends think and what the algorithms tell us to think. We get so certain that we can’t even have debate with people without putting them in a different pile, politically or socially. It’s not healthy. I think we all learn by facing people on the opposite side of the opinion pool and learning why they have their beliefs.” In fact, Hussy Hicks are a band that appeals to just about every demographic. Audiences are typically a mix of millennials, baby boomers and beyond. From homeowners to couch suffers. Fans of rootsy high-energy blues, rocking Country and all the best dance-friendly rhythms. “The old universal language thing. Being back out in the world again, there’s so much nuance in the human experience to be dived into that we missed out on, stuck on our [Covid] islands. Acclaimed as one of the best guitarists around, Parker cites early inspiration. “The Emmanuels, obviously.  I was lucky to get to play in Phil’s band for a few years. So that was amazing for my guitar learning. Before that, my dad’s British blues collection. Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher…and people I’d see on the live scene.” Gentz’s killer vocals reflect the wealth of influences she draws from, adding extra punch when Parker let fly with some serious shredding. “I grew up listening to all the music of the early 80s. Madonna, Pat Benatar… Then I started singing Country music. My parents were into Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. I was singing with my sister – 90s American Country like Trisha Yearwood. In young adulthood I was introduced to soul – new soul and also Etta James, Billie Holliday. I fell in love with those distinct amazing voices. Now we listen to everything. Our tour car playlist is quite extensive!”

Of the European tour, they are happy to report that there hadn’t been a bad gig. “They’ve all been great in their own way. Everything from major festivals (Ireland’s Electric Picnic, L Fest in Wales, Madame Guitar in Italy) and a bunch of really cool little club shows. It is the first time we’ve been able to tour the 2020 album. So, between that and the new EP and some live favourites, there’s a lot in the set.” Their northern hemisphere fans hadn’t forgotten them. “Actually, someone requested ‘A Million Different Truths’ off the 2010 album last night. We gave them the long-term fan respect and had a crack at it. It’s been heart-warming to see people coming back.” After thousands of live performances over the years they agree, “The stage is our happy, comfortable place.”

The latest song released from the EP is the deliciously down and dirty ‘I Am Not A Dog’. “My angry track”, Parker laughs. “Where all the frustrations come out. After all the restrictions and stuff, we tried to get through remaining as mentally well as possible. So it’s cool to let all the frustrations and built-up energy out on this track. Loud and grungy and a fun one to play live.” Gentz adds, “I play the toolbox in this song and at one of the festivals here, a bunch of people created this sort of toolbox dance. It was pretty funny so let’s see where that goes in the future.”

Despite losing time and opportunity to pandemic restrictions and treasured instruments and furniture from their home and studio to flooding, one creative endeavour was kept safe. The Hussy Hicks app – worked on with Luca Maran – offers music lovers tour dates, band insights and news PLUS three playable 8-bit video games, one for each song on the EP. Luca Maran Each game is tailored to match a song. For ‘Same Boat’, players control an inflatable boat of Hussy Hicks downstream escaping and avoiding a myriad of obstacles. The ‘Capitulation’ game is a choose-your-own-adventure road trip. There are over 100 narrative paths based on player choices, and 18 different endings offered, including a gig inside a dragon’s stomach! The third game sees the Hussy Hicks battling again their perfect antagonist and alter-egos, the Hussy Hacks. “People who like the app, love it and just lose their minds. Others say, ‘Just tell me when the record’s out’.”

The Australian east coast tour will, as in Europe, be in full band mode. “Ali [Foster] flew over and our friend and collaborator Raphael [White] on bass.” (“We had him over from France when lockdown first hit so he was stuck with us.”) Following shows in Queensland and NSW, a second round of dates will take the band to Tassie and Victoria in early 2023. They expect the planned Lismore gig to be an emotional one. “The theatre copped it as bad as anyone in town. So, we’re passionate about playing an appropriate local show. It will be quite special.”

HUSSY HICKS’ JULZ PARKER – ONWARD AND UPWARD

hussy hicks tour dates

If you were lucky enough to attend this year’s Port Fairy Folk Festival or Bluesfest in Byron Bay, you may have stumbled across blues, folk, roots duo Hussy Hicks. If you do did, I’m sure like everyone else you were blown away by their energy, quality of music and their instant connection to the audience. If you haven’t discovered Hussy Hicks yet, then it’s about time you did. Consisting of Julz Parker, one of Australia’s most creative guitarists and dynamic singer Leesa Gentz, Hussy Hicks have been quietly but confidently developing an ever-increasing following in Australia, Europe and America for more than a decade now. Their latest and fifth album, On The Boundaries has just taken out the Best Album Award at the annual Gold Coast Music Awards.

hussy hicks tour dates

Released in late 2017, On The Boundaries sees Hussy Hicks expand upon their blues and roots vibe and venture into a more atmospheric, layered, textural world. Teaming up with Raphael White, they’ve allowed the London-based producer to take on a 3rd member role, adding his adventurous spin to their already accomplished musical feast. Julz and Leesa have been thrilled with the response to their new album to date, particularly the Gold Coast Award win. “We were pretty stoked,” Julz told me. “It was really nice. You make an album and you like it but then to know others do too is great. Of all the awards, I guess that’s one that really relates to a specific piece of work, so we’re proud of that.”

With On The Boundaries, there were no early thoughts about what the album should sound like and no preconceived thematic ideas, it was more a case of laying down basic tracks of the songs they’d written and then see if a direction might emerge. “We just wanted to make music with our friend Raphael, “ explained Julz. “We thought we’d just go in and create the songs and see where they went. They are all built on a shaker track, so they all had a solid foundation and groove and the same general feel. We had about two solid weeks in there and that was when we did the bulk of everything. Then over the next four months, we did some back and forward to London with some extra tracks that we tidied up at the end.”

For any artist who is experimenting in the studio with multiple layers and sonic textures, the concern is that replicating the songs live might end up being be problematic and leading to the need for additional gear. However, Julz told us that rather than further complicate their stage rigs, they adapted the songs to suit the equipment they already had. “I think it was more about working out what the core sounds were that we were trying to put across,” she explained. “You had to work out which elements held the songs together the best. We’d tried to hit upon a lot of the things that were there without having to dedicate a whole other instrument to it. So it’s pretty much the same stage set up, although I now use a loop for one of the tracks that we play with the band. I loop a section and play a solo over it and when we play with the duo too I loop a couple of sections, so I can solo but still have some chunk under it. That is the only change we’ve made with these songs.”

hussy hicks tour dates

Just like the various tones and soundscapes Julz Parker produces on the guitar, her influences reflect those sounds. From John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers-era guitarists such as Peter Green and Eric Clapton, to Tommy & Phil Emmanuel to Django Reinhardt and more modern, introspective players, Julz enjoys exploring it all. Her current dependable tools of trade are her versatile Maton acoustic and a Fender Srat. “I usually take my Maton on the road, a custom shop dreadnought, which I split,” she explains. “I use the normal Maton AP5 pickup into a di, through a Delay Llama pedal. Then I send a magnetic pickup option through my pedals, the same pedals I use when I use the Strat … a couple of Tube Screamers, a Delay Llama, a POG and an Octave. So basically with the acoustic I split it and I get the volume and an electric sound. With the electric guitar, I just like to use valve amps, preferably a Fender Twin and my Music Man 212 HD and I have one on either side of the stage but that is a luxury we don’t have all of the time.”

Hussy Hicks has toured overseas regularly and the work has gradually begun to pay dividends, to the point that many international venues are asking them back. “Our last European tour was great,” said Jules. “We had a couple of sold out shows and seemed like we’d got to a tipping point where enough people had heard of you in any particular town and you fill a room, they tell their friends and so on. We did a tour of the states last year too and have been invited back to a whole bunch of those venues. We’re going to a festival Alaska, so all that stuff is pretty exciting. It’s great to see how an Italian crowd responds compared to a German crowd compared to Australia. It is so interesting to see how people enjoy their music in different places around the world.”

In between Hussy Hicks tour commitments, Julz and Leesa are working with kids’ TV show Get Grubby TV, cast as the band of main character Dirtgirl. Additionally, Julz is helping her friend, Australian country artist Beccy Cole with her new album. However, bubbling away in he background are the vague notions of a new Hussy Hicks album. “We’re still not 100% sure what it’s going to be like,” Julz told me. “We have a bunch of tracks and I’ll probably just do some simple demos at home and we’ll work out where we want to take them production wise. We are going to be in America for a couple of months, so we might rent a studio in Mobile and put a track or two down while we are there. We are always in touch with Raph who made the last album, so we might do some tracks with him or just go into the studio with the band here. I don’t quite know yet where the next album is going to go.”

If Julz hadn’t already been one of the most amiable and endearing musicians I’ve had the pleasure of talking to, she topped off the interview by telling me she’s been a long time fan of Australian Musician. “Thanks so much for chatting,” She said “I have been reading Australian Musician since I was a child. I was always one of those kids who rode their bikes to the music shop to get the new publications and scour the pages.” Hussy Hicks … great band, real nice people.

Kelly Clarkson Reacts to Carrie Underwood Becoming  American Idol  Judge

Kelly clarkson exclusively told e news that she thinks it's "brilliant" her fellow  american idol  winner carrie underwood is joining the competition show as a judge for the new season..

Kelly Clarkson  knows  Carrie Underwood  has been waiting for a moment like this.

The  Kelly Clarkson Show  host—whose sixth season kicks off on NBC Sept. 23—shared that she's so excited for her fellow  American Idol  alum to  join the competition show's upcoming season  as a judge following  Katy Perry 's exit.

"I think that's brilliant," Kelly exclusively told  E! News  cohost  Keltie Knight  in an interview airing Sept. 12. "Like, what better person to have—somebody that's won that show to come back."

And Kelly knows firsthand how incredible it is to be a part of a music competition show, as both the winner of  American   Idol 's first season and as a judge on  The Voice . As she explained, she was able to "look at these artists and go, 'No, no, no, this isn't lip service. I've been you literally, and this can happen and it's a lot of hard work.'"

And Kelly believes Carrie—who won season four of  American Idol —will also be able "to be honest with them," especially because she's experienced the same process and has gone on to have such "a huge career."

"That's invaluable," Kelly said. "To have somebody to look at and go, 'OK, they've done it and they're sitting right there. So, that means I am capable of doing it. I can dream that big.'"

Emphasizing that Carrie was an "awesome pick," the 42-year-old added, "I think she's going to do great." (For more from Kelly, tune into  E! News  tonight, Sept. 12, at 11 p.m.)

And Kelly isn't the only one excited for Carrie's new gig. Former  American Idol  judge  Simon Cowell  also expressed his delight about the 41-year-old's judge duties.

"I think it's a good choice,"  he previously told  E! News . "Carrie, we go back a long way. I remember her audition like it was yesterday. She was so good, she's such a sweet person."

And Carrie's fellow judge  Lionel Richie  is thrilled she'll be joining him and  Luke Bryan , especially because of her  Idol  background.

"What a great judge,"  Lionel told  E! News  in August . "Now we don't have to explain anymore, 'We know how you feel.' As artists, we know how you feel, but we've never been in that oval that says, 'American Idol.' She's been there, done that."

But don't expect Carrie to dish out any harsh criticism to the contestants à la Simon.

"I can be honest and constructive, but still kind,"  she noted on SiriusXM's  Music Row Happy Hour in Las Vegas  in August . "And I think that's the whole point, because people are coming in and it's dreams. You're part of somebody's story from that moment on."

And the "Before He Cheats" singer knows she's up to the challenge of judging, especially because she's a versatile artist.

"Hopefully, when I listen to people come and audition," Carrie continued, "I can have any lens I need to put on in terms of what music I'm thinking."

Curious about what other  American   Idol  alums are up to? Keep reading.

The mom of River and Remy has come a long way since experiencing a moment like this on the inaugural season of American Idol  in 2002. The New York resident has collected three Grammys and counting (with her latest disc, Chemistry , up for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2024 Grammys ), notched three No. 1 hits, starred on NBC's The Voice as a judge and is now hosting her own award-winning daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show .

The season two runner-up made two big reveals in September 2008—annoucing that the birth of his son Parker (with his close friend, music producer Jaymes Foster ) inspired him to come out. "I can't raise a kid and teach him how to lie, teach him to hide things," he reasoned on Good Morning America . "And at the same time, I also don't ever want to raise him in an environment where it's not OK for him to be exactly who he is, no matter what." Since then, the famous red-head switched from music to politics, even making a run for Congress in 2016. After losing in the election, the singer released a documentary about his journey. But he hasn't totally left music in the rearview, announcing his plans to tour with season two champ Ruben Studdard in 2024.

After winning season two of Idol , Ruben went on to score a Grammy nomination and released a handful of successful albums. Then, in 2013, the singer starred as one of the contestants on The Biggest Loser  and quickly became a fan-favorite. He was eliminated twice , but took away valuable lessons from the show. And while he and Clay remain tight, he found his forever partner in wife Kristin , who welcomed their second child in 2024.

Truth is, the season three champion is grateful for every step of her journey. "We go through things, you fall, you get back up," she shared with E! News in December. And though she's weathered some tough moments, "For me, losing everything twice, having to fight to get back here, it feels good."  Her latest high notes include welcoming daughter Keziah with husband Kendall Taylor in 2021 and receiving a Golden Globe nod for The Color Purple remake. Said the North Carolina native, also mom to 22-year-old daughter Zion , "I want to enjoy this and know that I worked hard to get here."

She may not have won season three, but we are telling you the musician made up for it: First an Oscar for 2006's Dreamgirls , then a Grammy for her performance The Color Purple musical adaption in 2017, plus a stint as a judge on The Voice . The latest project for the mom to David , 14: Her own eponymous talk show .

From the moment she stepped onto the Idol stage, Underwood cemented her place in pop culture. Sure enough, not only did she win season four, but she's also gone on to become country music's reigning princess. She went on to co-host the CMA Awards for more than 10 years with fellow artist, Brad Paisley . And between balancing her music career with her hosting duties, the "Jesus Take The Wheel Singer" is a mom to her two sons with retired NHL center Mike Fisher .

The season four runner-up is now married with three boys and a girl . Despite suffering serious health problems in 2006, the Southern rocker has released three hit albums since his stint on Idol.

Constantine Maroulis

With his big hair and even bigger voice (who can forget his rousing rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" during season four?), Constantine was a perfect fit for Broadway's  Rock of Ages , for which he earned a Tony nom. Currently touring with his single "Comeback," the dad to 13-year-old  Malena is also starring in Broadway's Rock & Roll Man .

After his season-five victory, the silver fox's eponymous album went platinum and he starred in a Broadway production of Grease . In more recent years, he has made the switch from music to TV as a host of a show called  State-Plate , which focuses on the premise of farm-to-table eating. Though he remains committed to his first love, with a slate of tour dates set for January 2024.

Long before Bieber fever, there was McPheever, which has helped Katharine land both singing and acting work, most notably in the Broadway-inspired show Smash and the drama Scorpion . Wed to David Foster since 2019, she is now mom to musically-inclined son Rennie . "I would love for him to follow in his dad's footsteps and just be really well-versed in all different types of musical instruments," Katharine told E! News . "Obviously, he's 2-and-a-half. We're not pushing him. We're just letting him do his thing. But, I would love for him to have a working understanding of all instruments a lot like his dad. I think he's on his way—that's for sure."

Elliott Yamin

After  American Idol , the season five finalist, who had a hit with the song "Wait for You," went to Angola where he worked alongside former Idol judge Kara DioGuardi to raise awareness for Malaria No More. Elliott also made news in 2010 after experiencing Chile's earthquake and living to tweet about it. Still making music, he shares daughter Camilla , 3, with Karen Cruz .

While the country music singer finished sixth on the fifth season of American Idol , she has starred in Hallmark's Christmas in Graceland and earned three Daytime Emmy nods for her TV show Pickler & Ben . Following husband Kyle Jacobs ' death by suicide in February 2023, she's been reflecting on their years together. "One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of a crisis, if you don't know what to do, ‘do nothing, just be still,'" Pickler told  People in an interview published this past August. "I have chosen to heed his advice."

As the youngest ever winner, the season six champ set off some serious, well, sparks in 2007. Her Battlefield tour took her to 35 cities around the U.S., and (if that wasn't enough), she made her Broadway debut in 2010, starring in the musical In the Heights . Her success and good fortune has continued, with the star giving birth  to her first son with husband Dana Isaiah in May of 2018.  In the years since, she made an emotional return to Idol and competed on the 31st season of Dancing With the Stars .

The season seven winner's big hit "Time of My Life" may reflect his singing success, but the title could just as easily apply to his endeavors offstage. David visited Ethiopia in 2010 on behalf of the United Nations' efforts to empower women in that country. He also ran in the Race for Hope in D.C. to raise money for brain cancer research in honor of his brother Adam , who lost his fight with the disease in 2009. Married to Racheal Stump since 2015, the still-touring musician released his latest single "TABOS" in 2022.

After finishing in second place to his fellow David on season seven, the singer embarked on a two-year mission for the Church of the Latter Day Saint's in Chile. Since his  return in 2014  he has continued performing. He came out as member of the LGBTQ+ community in June 2021. "It’s been a beautiful journey learning to accept myself," he shared on Instagram in October, "and I hope just by living my life now I can encourage many of you out there to do the same."

Nearly eclipsed in the media spotlight by his runner-up, Adam Lambert , the season eight champ has enjoyed quiet success with his self-titled second album. Released in November 2009, it debuted at no. 11 on the Billboard 200, and one of its singles, "I Need to Know," was featured on an episode of The Vampire Diaries.  In the meantime, the star has been growing his family, having welcomed three children with his high school sweetheart  Katy O'Connell .

If publicity were a prize, the eighth season's controversial runner-up is a grand-slam winner. Since his time on the reality show, he's released several albums, headlined tours, received countless nominations (including a Grammy nod), followed in Freddie Mercury 's footsteps touring as the frontman for Queen and has even starred in Fox's remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show . Not to forget that he briefly filled in as a guest judge on  Idol . The singer also helped open up the 2019 Oscars with a performance of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions."

After season 8 of American Idol ,   Gokey got married to his now-wife Leyicet Peralta in 2012, and the pair have four children together.

As a three-time Grammy nominee, he released a Christian music album titled Jesus People in 2021. He also has an eyewear brand named Danny Gokey Eyewear.

After joining the top 10 finalists' summer tour in 2010, the season nine winner launched his solo music career . Lee also married model-actress   Jonna Walsh in 2012 after they met on the set of his first music video following Idol . Nowadays, the star is a well-established singer-songwriter , with his tracks making it onto shows like  The Walking Dead .

Crystal Bowersox

Runner-up to Lee DeWyze in season nine, the Janis Joplin -esque rocker married musician Brian Walker and released her first album, Farmer's Daughter , in December 2010. She lost her label deal when RCA disbanded Arista, J Records and Jive Records, but she made her acting debut on the second season of ABC's Body of Proof . In May 2013, the singer split from her husband. After her divorce she told  The Boot   that her second album All That For Thi s was "the next chapter of my life." The mom of two has since released 2017's Alive and 2022's HitchHiker .

Scotty McCreery

The season 10 winner was the first Idol champ since Ruben to have his first album, Clear as Day , debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. He was named New Artist of the Year at the 2011 American Country Awards and sang the national anthem before Game 1 of the World Series that same year. In June 2018, the "This Is It" and "Five More Minutes" singer married longtime girlfriend  Gabi Dugal . They welcomed son Avery in October 2022.

The country darling finished second to Scotty, but she got her record deal and released her studio debut, Wildflower , in October 2011. Following her time on Idol , the singer presented with Scotty at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, made her Grand Ole Opry debut and even performed with Martina McBride at the CMA Music Festival. In 2017, she got her first nod from the CMAs when she was nominated for Best New Artist following her success with her album, Road Less Traveled . She even made her move to the big screen when she starred in a film of the same name. The "Thicc As Thieves" singer revealed her engagement to Cam Arnold while performing at the Grand Ole Opry in November 2022.

The season 10 contestant only finished sixth—and that was partly because the judges used their one save of the season five weeks beforehand—but he was a cult fave. He performed on the Idols Live tour, cut a cover of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with fellow finalist (and rumored flame) Haley Reinhart , and ultimately signed with jazz label Concord. His self-titled debut album was released in 2012, and was followed by 2018's I Put A Spell On You and 2019's Jazz .

Sure, he was cut before the live voting rounds in season 10, but Allen has since released two consecutive No. 1 hits with 2018's "Best Shot" and "Make Me Want To" and won the 2021 Country Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year. In April 2023, he and wife Alexis Allen announced that they were expecting their third child and ending their two-year marriage. Nearly a month later, Jimmie was accused of sexual assault and abuse by his former manager in a lawsuit. Though the musician admitted to being unfaithful, publicly apologizing to Alexis "for humiliating her with my affair," he denied the sexual misconduct allegations and said the relationship with his former manager was a "consensual" one.  Shortly after welcoming son Cohen Ace James in September, the couple revealed they were trying to repair their union .

After his season 11 win, the musician rose to the top of the charts with his hit single, "Home," which also served as a theme song for NBC's coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics. He released his latest album, Drift Back this past June. In 2015, he married his girlfriend,  Hannah Blackwell , in a small ceremony while surrounded by his family and friends. Four years later, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Patch .

Maddie Poppe

"There is a lot of different sounding songs on the album," the season 16 winner teased to E! News ahead of releasing the appropriately named Whirlwind in 2019, a year after her Idol victory. "I can't pick just one [sound] to stick with because I really love them all so much and it's hard to stay in one vein."  Her latest single, 2023's "SOS I'm In Love" has a strong POV, though. Because she is, by the way, revealing her romance with musician Gabe Burdulis after her split from season 16 runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson .

Caleb Lee Hutchinson

Since becoming the runner-up of season 16, the singer has focused on releasing new music and enjoying life's opportunities that come with appearing on the ABC series. "I've always loved music and I've always wanted to be an artist," Caleb Lee shared with E! News. "But I learned so much about entertainment. I got to go to Luke Bryan 's last show for his tour and I got to come out and sing a song with him." He released his latest disc, Southern Galactic in November.

After coming in third on season 16 of Idol , the "I Hope" country singer focused on finishing her album. "I'm excited to play Stagecoach. And touring with Brad Paisley is the cherry on top to everything," she told E! News. "It's crazy to go on tour with him." Nearly two years after she and fellow alum Cade Foehner welcomed their first baby together , daughter Baylah , they added son Augustine to the mix in October 2022. This past August, she revealed she was expecting their third child .

History of Voronezh

Foundation of voronezh.

The first mention of Voronezh dates back to 1177 in connection with the battle of the Vladimir and Ryazan princes and the escape of Yaropolk of Ryazan to “Voronozh”. Some historians suggest, based on fragments of these chronicles, that Voronezh (Voronozh) existed as a settlement back in the 12th century. Other historians believe that the chronicle meant only the Voronezh River.

The second, very significant, mention of Voronezh in the chronicles refers to 1237, when the conquest of the Russian principalities by Khan Batu began during the Western campaign of the Mongols. The Russian princes decided to give the first battle to the enemies “and came out against them in Voronozh”, but were defeated. Again, the word “Voronozh” probably means the Voronezh River, not a settlement.

The Tsar’s decree on the foundation of Voronezh has not yet been found. The archive has an order of the boyar Nikita Yuriev from 1586 on the reorganization of the guard service on the southern outskirts of the Moscow state and on the construction of two fortified settlements: Livny and Voronezh. Thus, the official year of the foundation of Voronezh is 1586.

Located on the trade route at the confluence of the Voronezh River with the Don, Voronezh could not remain an exclusively military town for a long time. In 1615, its population was about 7 thousand people. From the middle of the 17th century, Russian and foreign ambassadors to the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the Caucasus travelled through Voronezh. It became part of the Belgorod line - fortifications that protected the Russian state from the raids of the Crimean Tatars until the end of the 17th century.

More Historical Facts…

Voronezh - the cradle of the Russian navy

In 1695, during the first Azov campaign, Russian troops were unable to capture the fortress of Azov standing on the bank of the Don River, several kilometers from its confluence with the Sea of Azov. The siege was unsuccessful, as the Ottoman garrison in the fortress received support from the sea.

Therefore, Peter I decided to start building a fleet. Voronezh was chosen for this because of its strategic position on the Voronezh River flowing into the Don. Secondly, there were forests near the town that could be used as building materials. Thirdly, the residents of Voronezh had experience in the construction and use of river vessels.

In 1696, as a result of the second campaign, the Azov fortress was taken by Russian troops. The Russian fleet prevented the supply of people, ammunition and food to the fortress. From 1696 to 1711, about 215 ships were built in Voronezh, including the ship “Goto Predestinatsia” (The Providence of God) - the first Russian ship of the line.

In Voronezh, the organizational foundations for the subsequent construction of the Russian fleets in the Baltic and Black Seas were laid. The first Admiralty in Russia was also created here. However, the military shipyard in Voronezh did not exist for long due to the gradual shallowing of the rivers.

Voronezh in the 18th-19th centuries

In 1709, Voronezh became part of the Azov Governorate. In 1711, its center moved from Azov to Tambov, and in 1715 - to Voronezh. In 1725, after the death of the first Russian emperor, the region was renamed into the Voronezh Governorate. In 1745, the first educational institution was opened - the theological seminary (closed in 1918, reopened in 1993).

In 1748, Voronezh was badly damaged by fire. Almost the entire center, which was located on the bank of the river, burned down. After that, the center of Voronezh again began to be located in the place of today’s Universitetskaya Square.

In 1774, after another big fire, Catherine II approved the general plan for the regular development of Voronezh. In the second half of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries, Voronezh was one of the centers of the Russian cloth industry.

In 1781, the coat of arms of Voronezh was approved: “The shield is divided in two, in the upper part in a golden field - a two-headed black eagle, and in the lower part in a red field - an overturned jar, from which the Voronezh River flows”.

In 1863, according to the census of residents, Voronezh numbered 38,672 people (the 12th largest city in the Russian Empire). The first public library was opened in 1864. In 1868, Voronezh was connected by railway with Moscow, in 1871 - with Rostov-on-Don, in 1894 - with Kursk.

Voronezh in the first half of the 20th century

In 1913, the first secular higher educational institution in Voronezh was opened - the Agricultural Institute named after Peter the Great (Voronezh State Agrarian University named after Emperor Peter I). In 1914, the population of the city was 93,700 people. During the First World War, reserve military units were formed in Voronezh, defense enterprises from the western regions of the Russian Empire were evacuated here.

In 1928, Voronezh became the center of the Central Black Earth Oblast. And after its liquidation in 1934, it remained the center of Voronezh Oblast. On August 2, 1930, the first Soviet airborne assault was parachuted two kilometers from Voronezh. Today, August 2 is celebrated as the birthday of the Russian airborne forces.

In 1932, two large factories were built on the left bank - aviation and rubber. One of the most important industrial and scientific complexes in the USSR was formed in the city. Many types of aircraft produced in Voronezh began to enter the Red Air Force several years before the outbreak of World War II. In 1939, the population of Voronezh was 326,932 people.

In October-November 1941, during the Second World War, most of the large enterprises were evacuated to the east. From July 7, 1942 to January 25, 1943, the right-bank part of Voronezh, being under German occupation, suffered significant damage, about 18 thousand houses were destroyed (92% of all residential buildings). The active defense of Voronezh helped the Red Army to withstand and win in Stalingrad.

In November 1945, it was decided to prioritize the restoration of 15 oldest Russian cities, including Voronezh. In the late 1940s, the restoration of industrial enterprises was completed, by the mid-1950s - residential and public buildings. In 1956, the population of the city exceeded 400 thousand people.

Voronezh in the second half of the 20th century

In 1968, the first serial Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 was produced at the Voronezh Aviation Plant; in October 1977 - the first Soviet airbus (wide-body aircraft) Il-86. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was built, which became the largest in the region.

In 1983, about 6 km from the city limits, the construction of the Voronezh nuclear power plant for heat supply began. In 1990, under the influence of the Chernobyl disaster, it was suspended on the basis of a referendum held among Voronezh residents. The station, which was approximately 65% completed, was mothballed. In 2020, work began on its dismantling. In 1989, the population of Voronezh was about 887,000.

In the 1990s, in connection with the collapse of the USSR, the largest industrial enterprises of Voronezh were on the verge of bankruptcy due to a sharp decline in defense orders and the breakdown of existing economic ties. A lot of churches were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church; their restoration was carried out.

In the early and mid-1990s, agreements on twinning relations were concluded between Voronezh and the cities of Charlotte (USA), Chongqing (China) and Sliven (Bulgaria).

In 2008, Voronezh was awarded the title “City of Military Glory”. In 2009, a new Cathedral of the Annunciation, the third largest Orthodox church in Russia, was built to replace the destroyed one. On December 17, 2012, a millionth resident was born in the city, which made Voronezh the 15th city in Russia with a population of over 1 million.

Voronezh - Features

Initially, the city stood on the banks of the Voronezh River. In the 1970s, it was turned into a reservoir - one of the largest reservoirs in the world located entirely within the city. The Voronezh reservoir divides the city into two parts. Its center, cultural institutions, embankments, the best establishments, and the most prestigious districts are located on the right bank. On the left bank there are industrial enterprises, residential areas, and one beautiful park. The two banks are connected by three bridges: the longest of them is Severnyy Bridge (2 km long).

There are several versions of the origin of the name of the Voronezh River after which the city of Voronezh was named. Most likely it comes from the word “voron” (“raven”) or “voronoy” (black) reflecting the dark color of the water in the Voronezh River. The City Day of Voronezh is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September.

Voronezh is located in a temperate zone. Winter is moderately frosty with a permanent snow cover that forms in December. Quite often there are thaws accompanied by rains (especially in December). Also there are often drops in temperature below minus 20 degrees Celsius, which can last up to a week or more.

Summer is warm, even hot (especially July and the first half of August), in some years - rainy, in some years - dry. Autumn is mild and rainy. The leading sectors of the economy are food, chemical, radio-electronic industries, mechanical engineering and retail trade. The largest enterprises of Voronezh are Voronezh Joint-Stock Aircraft Building Company, Voronezh Mechanical Plant, Voronezh Ceramic Plant, Carriage Repair Plant named after V.I. Thalmann.

This city is a major transport hub, the transport system of which consists of air, rail and road transport systems. The Peter the Great Voronezh International Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Samara, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don. Public transport is represented by mini-buses, buses and trolleybuses.

Voronezh is worth visiting not only for its interesting museums, beautiful parks and picturesque squares. Here you can also see funny monuments to animals - heroes of famous literary works, replicas of the first ships of the Russian navy, unusual buildings in the Art Nouveau and Gothic style of the late 19th-20th centuries.

There are a lot of traditional Russian churches, theaters, and former merchant mansions in Voronezh that catch the eye with their noble and elegant appearance. Also, tourists should pay attention to the monuments perpetuating the image of the heroes of the Second World War. The Voronezh Sea, a huge reservoir stretching for tens of kilometers, is of no less interest.

The unique Church of the Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God, built by Russian monks inside a chalk mountain in the first half of the 19th century, is its main sight.
