Cruising Alaska: How to Spend a Day in Kodiak

by Prof. Cruise · Published April 28, 2019 · Updated September 27, 2019

Harbor in Kodiak

When you tell your friends you’re cruising to the islands, they probably picture palm trees and parrots, not Hemlocks and eagles.  And when you clarify that you’re cruising to Alaska, they likely think of Ketchikan, not Kodiak.  Do cruise ships even sail to Kodiak?

Yes!  In fact, I’ve been on one.  I visited Kodiak aboard Holland America’s ms Zaandam in September 2018.

Cruise ship in Kodiak

However, this port isn’t as common as others in Alaska – it’s generally limited to Alaskan cruises over 14 days and cruises to and from the Western United States and Asia.  So count yourself lucky if your itinerary includes it!

Cruise Ships Sailing to Kodiak in 2019

Ms Zaandam has moved to New England (she’s a Red Sox fan), but here are the ships scheduled to call in Kodiak in 2019:

  • Azamara, Azamara Quest
  • Crystal Cruises, Crystal Symphony
  • Cunard, Queen Elizabeth
  • Holland America, ms Amsterdam
  • Holland America, ms Maasdam
  • Holland America, ms Westerdam
  • Regent Seven Seas, Seven Seas Mariner
  • Seabourn, Seabourn Sojourn
  • Silversea, Silver Muse
  • Viking Ocean Cruises, Viking Orion
  • Windstar Cruises, Star Legend

Go here for the dates each ship will be at port in Kodiak. And search below if you’d like to book yourself on a cruise to Kodiak. That’s what I’m doing right now!

What’s so special about kodiak .

Beach in Kodiak

Now you might be feeling superior to your bridge club friends who have only visited Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka.  But before you declare in a huff: “you may be a better bidder, but you’ve never even been to Kodiak!” you might want to learn a bit more about it before Mildred retorts: “what makes Kodiak so special anyway?”

Kodiak, with a population hovering around 6,000, is the largest city on Kodiak Island.  Kodiak Island is the largest island in Alaska and the second largest island in the U.S., after Hawaii’s Big Island.  Kodiak is only accessible via air or boat.

holland america kodiak excursions

The Alutiiq people have inhabited the larger Kodiak area for over 7,000 years.  Then in 1763, Stephan Glotov, a Russian explorer, discovered Kodiak Island and Russian fur trappers settled in Kodiak in the years following.  When Russia sold Alaska to the United States in the 1860’s it quickly became a center for commercial fishing and the fishing industry remains a major driver of the Kodiak economy today.

Kodiak Island is home to the Kodiak bear, the largest bear species in the world, and the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, created during the Roosevelt administration.  Between its unique history and spectacular natural wonders, Kodiak is a special place indeed.  Take that, Mildred!

And as a cruise port, Kodiak is unique because it isn’t a major tourist destination.  Instead of Diamond’s International, you’ll get a more authentic Alaskan experience there.

So, What are the Options for My Port Day in Kodiak?

Your cruise ship will offer excursions falling into three categories: city tours, foodie tours, and nature/wildlife tours.

Here are the most common ship sponsored excursions:

City Tours of Kodiak

Downtown Kodiak

  • A Walk through Kodiak Harbor
  • Kodiak City Drive
  • Kodiak Highlights
  • Kodiak Sightseeing & Russian Tea

Foodie Tours of Kodiak

Foodie tour of Kodiak

  • A Taste of Kodiak

Wildlife/Nature Tours of Kodiak

Wildlife tours of Kodiak

  • Deep Sea Fishing
  • Kodiak Marine Wildlife Sightseeing
  • Kodiak Sightseeing & Wildlife Cruise
  • Fort Abercrombie State Park Nature Hike
  • Guided Wildlife and Historical Cruise
  • On the Water: Island Otter & Wildlife Adventure
  • Ultimate Kodiak Wildlife Cruise

We (myself, “H,” and my mom) didn’t book a shore excursion in Kodiak, so I can’t speak personally to any of these.  Check your cruise brochure, online booking, or with the excursions desk onboard your ship for descriptions and pricing and the Alaska board on Cruise Critic for feedback from those who have experienced them.  You can also explore options for privately booked excursions.

But what I can help with are 6 ideas for things to do on your own near the cruise pier (presented in the order we did them).  We made a day of these, which you can too.  Or you might pick a few to supplement your excursion.  Either way, I hope you enjoy your day in Kodiak as much as we did.

6 Interesting and Fun Things to do Near the Ship on Your Cruise to Kodiak

A shuttle will greet your ship and transport you for free into the heart of downtown. However, you may also choose to walk, which we did. Because we walked, we started our day at the Kodiak Harbor which is near the cruise pier. Here’s a map that will help orient you to where everything is relative to the pier and the downtown shuttle stop:

Cruise map of downtown Kodiak

1) Kodiak Harbor

Kodiak Harbor near the cruise ship terminal

Need a name for the boat your wife’s going to let you buy as soon as you finish retiling the bathroom?  The boat she doesn’t think you need because you live in Nebraska.  And the one you’re never actually going to get because your precocious Volkswagen keeps driving you to Sports Depot on the weekends instead of Home Depot.  Herbie!

But a guy can dream.  And you’re on vacation, so go ahead and imagine “Idle Time” parked on the concrete slab that used to be the lawn you hated mowing.  You’ll see your dream vessel and many others at the Kodiak Harbor.

And if you don’t like boats (wait, you’re on a cruise!), keep your eyes out for sea creatures clinging to the wood pilings.

2) Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

Address : 402 Center Ave

Summer hours : 9am-5pm, Tuesday – Saturday

holland america kodiak excursions

This visitor’s center aims to educate even the surliest of teenagers (or wives) about the landscape and wildlife of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.  Grumpy Pants may remain in a hunched posture with arms seemingly super glued in a crossed position, but I guarantee she’ll crack a smile at hearing different salmon species being “interviewed” on the radio.

All ages will enjoy a topographical map of the island, pelts to touch, dioramas, an impressive whale skeleton and the corresponding story of how it was procured, an interactive bird call display, and a 12 minute video providing an overview of the refuge.  There’s an elevator available to 2nd floor for those with mobility limitations and restrooms on both levels.  Don’t forget to check out the great little bookstore where you can pick something up to throw at your husband on sea days when he says he’s bored: “here, read this!”

3) Holy Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral in Kodiak

Address : 385 Kashevarof St

Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Kodiak.

Clothed in white wooden planks.  A tower containing multiple bells peaking through angled cathedral style windows.  Blue onion domed steeples capped with gold crosses. A display of cracked bells, remnants from her previous incarnations.  A diminutive cemetery where past priests and their wives lay resting.  All enclosed within a white picket fence marking her grounds.

Cracked bells outside the Russian Cathedral in Kodiak.

The beautiful and quaint exterior of the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral beckons visitors to Kodiak to trek up Mission Road from Center Street to get a more intimate look.  Because to truly experience her, you must step inside.

Interior o the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral in Kodiak.

Through her doors you’ll stand in awe at her display of orthodox iconography and her wooden reliquary housing the remains of St. Herman, the Russian Orthodox Church’s patron saint of Alaska.

Wooden reliquary housing the remains of St. Herman, the Russian Orthodox Church’s patron saint of Alaska

Take it all in and then spend a moment in quiet reflection or prayer (or catching your breath from puffing up the hill) at this can’t miss spot in Kodiak.

4) Kodiak Public Library

Address : 612 Egan Way

Hours : Mon-Fri 10am-8pm; Sat 10am-5pm; closed Sundays

Kodiak public library.

Looking for an internet connection so you can get caught up on Days of Our Lives?  Head up to the Kodiak Public Library where you can make your Kindergartener practice his reading while you find out who kidnapped Holly!

5) Northend Park in Kodiak

Sign for Northend Park in Kidiak

I’m not sure if it’s Northend Park or North End Park, but they got 20% on their sign due to the missing space. Either way, you’ll think you’re still at the library with your nose in a fairy tale featuring an enchanted forest upon hitting the trails at Northend/North End Park.

holland america kodiak excursions

The park is located on Near Island, just over the Near Island Bridge from downtown Kodiak. Stop along the bridge for spectacular views of Chenega Bay before you come upon the park entrance just past the end of the bridge on your left.

holland america kodiak excursions

Venture down to the overlook and then to the rock beach for beautiful sights and treasures to discover at low tide.

holland america kodiak excursions

The full loop trail through Northend Park is approximately 2 miles and, while not flat, is manageable for most without mobility challenges. There are stairs leading down to the overlook and beach, but it’s still a gorgeous walk through the lush forest even if you can’t make it down the stairs. “H” (age 5) and my mom (age 70, but don’t tell her I told you) didn’t have any trouble with the trail or stairs.

6) The Baranov Museum in Kodiak

Baranov Museum in Kodiak

Address : 101 Marine Way

Summer hours : Mon-Sat 10am-4pm

Admissions : $5 for adults; children 12 and under free

The Baranov museum is housed in the oldest Russian building in the U.S. and the oldest building in Alaska. Originally used as a pelt warehouse, she later housed a Russian family and is even rumored to be haunted by the patriarch who was murdered by a drifter. If her walls could talk, they’d have some interesting stories to tell!

Thankfully, she’s been turned into a museum with carefully crafted displays and lovingly preserved artifacts giving her voice. With several of her rooms furnished in the style of her early inhabitants, you’ll be transported to a time when locals rightfully and confidently declared, “I can see Russian from my house” because their house was, in fact, in Russia.

Baranov Museum in Kodiak

Native artifacts and photographs of Kodiak after the 1964 tsunami are among the highlights of the Baranov. It also houses a collection of oral histories from elderly Kodiak residents.

While I wouldn’t travel far for such a small museum or plan my day around it, it’s right across the street from the cruise ship shuttle and can easily be covered in an hour or less.

Final Thoughts on Kodiak

As you’re running from a shaggy green tree trunk in Northend Park – a tree you’ve convinced your 5 year-old is a monster – plant your feet in the spongy earth for a moment to touch her brilliant mossy covering and notice how soft it is. Appreciate the beauty of this unique place. Breath it in. Close your eyes and listen.

Later, hear the stories of her people. Bare witness to the unique experience of another and in the process add something new to your own story. Kodiak. A place you’re lucky to see, because most don’t make it this far.

Class dismissed.

Port Kodiak Island cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Kodiak Island, Alaska. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Kodiak is a fishing port and town on Chiniak Bay Alaska (Kodiak Island's northeastern coast) with population around 6,000. Town's best-known tourist attractions include a Russian Orthodox Church and the Baranof Museum. Initially named Pavlovsk Gavan (Paul's Harbor), the settlement was established in 1792 by the Russian-American Company (1799-1881). Kodiak AK was Russian America's colonial capital until it was moved to Sitka AK .

Kodiak Island is separated from mainland Alaska by Shelikof Strait. The island is ranked USA's 2nd largest (after Hawaii and before Puerto Rico) and world's 80th largest island. It has total area approx 9311 km2 (3595 mi2), length 160 km (99 mi) and width 16-97 km (10-60 mi). The other (in the "USA top 10") largest Alaskan islands are Prince of Wales , Chichagof , St Lawrence , Admiralty , Nunivak, Unimak, and Baranof .

Island's largest community and principal port is Kodiak. The island is located in Gulf of Alaska, to the south of Anchorage AK and Kenai Peninsula. The mountainous terrain is densely covered with high grass, bushes and wildflowers. Scoured by glaciers, the island is nearly devoid of trees. Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge (nature park) covers 75% of the island and is the habitat of the carnivorous Alaskan brown bear.

To the southwest are located the island groups Trinity Islands (separated by Sitkinak Strait) and Semidi Islands. Both archipelagos administratively belong to Alaska's Kodiak Island Borough, with total land area approx 16964 km2 (6550 mi2), marine area 14172 km2 (5472 mi2), and total population around 14,000.

Kodiak Alaska was included as call port in Northwest Passage cruises  of the following passenger ships:

  • Crystal Serenity  - 32-days itinerary from  Seward Alaska  to  NYC New York  (2016 - August 16 to September 16)
  • Crystal Serenity - 32-days itinerary 32-days Seward to New York City (2017 - August 15 to September 15)
  • Seven Seas Navigator  - 63-days itinerary from  Miami Florida  to  Montreal Quebec  (2017 - June 17 to August 18). The voyage was soon cancelled due to bad weather forecasts for July.

Note: All Northwest Passage ship transits are assisted by a Canadian icebreaker or another vessel with an ice-strengthened hull.

Holland America Alaska Review (Excursions)

holland america kodiak excursions

For many, Alaska is a bucket list trip, with its rugged terrain and incredible wildlife. We thought a Holland America Alaska Excursions review might be helpful for those who are planning a trip to the Last Frontier.

Holland America cruise ship with woman showing hands in a heart.

If you love seeing the amazing sights of Alaska but aren’t quite ready to go roughing it, a voyage on one of the cruise lines that sail through Southeast Alaska and beyond is the way to go.

By booking Holland America Alaska excursions, you can see all of the sights and still have the convenience and fun of a cruise vacation.

Our Alaskan cruise was on the cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam . This was my second trip with Holland America.

My first was 20 days in Southeast Asia on the Massdam, which has been replaced by the Westerdam. See that article for a long list of things to do on the ship , which is standard for most Holland America cruises.

I was very excited to cruise again! The cruise experience in itself, plus the exciting destination, made this a trip to remember. Read on to learn more about our Holland America Alaska Cruise excursions review.

Table of Contents

Why We Love Cruising with Holland America

If you’ve never been on a cruise before, you may be surprised at how many activities there are on board the ship.

This isn’t just a convenient way to get around Alaska – with a Holland America Alaska cruise, getting there is half the fun!

On the Nieuw Amsterdam, you will find stage shows, live music, a casino, onboard movies, the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, and clubs for the kids to attend so you can fully enjoy your relaxation time.

There’s an abundance of special activities for a sea day, but there are also activities when the ship is in port, which is why I thought this excursions review might be helpful.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a cruise without so many incredible things to eat.

Bacon on a mini clothes line.

The main Dining Room, poolside Dive-In grill, New York Pizza, casual dining at Lido Market, and even 24-hour room service are included in your cruise fare.

There are also specialty restaurants at an additional cost, including Nami Sushi, Explorations Cafe, Tamarind (a pan-Asian dining experience), Canaletto (authentic Italian cuisine), and Pinnacle Grill steakhouse.

Holland America features a variety of staterooms for every need and budget. Even the most basic inside stateroom still has plush Euro-Top mattresses on the queen-size bed and premium massage shower heads.

For more space, you can upgrade to ocean view, verandah, or Signature Suite. For the ultimate experience, the Neptune and Pinnacle suites are incredible.

Cruise ship rooms are extremely functional, and they make great use of all available space, with places to sit and watch TV, and closets for plenty of storage.

One feature of a Holland America cruise that has to be mentioned is the incredible staff. I always enjoy them so much!

From the stateroom attendants to the dining staff and every role on board the ship, the staff is incredible at providing excellent service and willing to help with any needs you might have.

It’s impossible to say enough good things about the Holland America crew members!

Best Time to Cruise to Alaska

Summer is the best time to cruise to Alaska to see whales . We were there in July and the weather was perfect.

The only time I was cold was when we spent time in Glacier Bay National Park out on the deck. I was glad I packed gloves, though this was the only time I needed them.

This was the day we were served Holland America’s famous pea soup out on the deck as well as hot drinks like coffee with optional Grand Marnier, Jameson Whiskey, or other liqueurs.

Bottles of liqueurs to serve with coffee or hot chocolate on a purple tablecloth.

When we were out exploring on the Holland America Alaska Excursions, I carried my puffy coat in my backpack just in case. The weather was very comfortable.

Our Holland America Alaska Excursions Review

Our cruise visited several ports of call including Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, with a trip up to Denali and on to Anchorage. Each of the cruise ports offers a variety of Alaska shore excursions. The excursions offer something for everyone and let you see and experience unique things in each port.

Best of Ketchikan: Totems, Wildlife Cruise & Alaska Appetizers

The area around Ketchikan was a summer fishing camp for the Tlingit people and eventually became an incorporated city in 1900, settled by cannery workers who came up from Oregon.

The area has the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles as well as abundant wildlife.

Totom pole in Ketchikan Alaska.

We took a comfortable motorcoach from the ship for a drive through downtown Ketchikan.

Our guide filled us in on a little history of the area, including the colorful shops and the story of how this area was once a red-light district.

It was enough of a teaser to warrant a visit back in our free time to look for souvenirs and see the famous Dolly’s , Star House , and 20 Creek Street .

Alaska Appetizers

Our tour stopped at the George Inlet Cannery and we were able to explore the interactive exhibits before taking a tour to learn about the history of the cannery.

Old cannery building in Alaska.

The history of fish canneries in Alaska dates back to 1878. This particular cannery was built near Beaver Falls on George Inlet in 1914. It was leased by Libby, McNeill and Libby in 1926 and purchased by them two years later. Libby Cannery would operate until 1958. It reopened as a historic landmark in 1996.

holland america kodiak excursions

At the cannery, there were fresh pastries and wine or local beer. They also had incredible baked salmon with pineapple and grilled salmon.

Salmon bites with pineapple in a warming dish.

Totem Poles

Our next stop was Saxman Native Village , home to the world’s largest collection of totem poles. These colorful totem poles are authentic replicas of original poles from the Tsimshian, Haida, and Tlingit peoples.

Each totem pole tells a unique story about the legends of the land and the people who lived there. We also had free time to visit the village gift shop.

Totem pole close up.

Wildlife Cruise

Our final segment of this excursion was on the water. We boarded a boat to explore the coastline of George Inlet.

On our sailing, we visited Walden Rocks where seals hang out. We saw so many bald eagles we lost count, as well as many sea lions.

Bald eagle on top of a pole.

We didn’t see any porpoises or humpback whales on our sailing, though they are often seen on the trip.

Mendenhall Glacier & Juneau Tram

One of the must-see attractions in Juneau is Mendenhall Glacier . This glacier is about thirteen miles long and dates to around 3,000 years ago!

This excursion takes you to Mendenhall Glacier by way of a narrated tour of downtown Juneau. For being a capital city, Juneau has a very small-town feel.

At the Mendenhall Glacier visitor center, we got to see a 450-year-old tree, along with a Tlingit man who was carving a totem pole for the city. There’s also an informational movie in the Visitor’s Center, and the glacier observation area.

450 year old tree with no touch sign.

If you want a closer look at the glacier and its surroundings, there are several hiking trails around Mendenhall Glacier, including a short walk that takes you to an overlook of the glacier.

You can also hike out to Nugget Falls and down the challenging East Glacier trail.

If you want to see the glacier up close, there is a helicopter tour that takes you right up to the top. Of course, you will see glaciers on the ship, too.

View of a glacier from a cruise ship.

That was an amazing day as we were able to stay for hours to watch the glacier calving when the pieces of ice crash into the bay.

After this tour we had plenty of time to do some exploring, so we decided to make our own tour of the Best Juneau Breweries .

Evening Whale Quest & Meal

In the evening, we opted for another excursion, this time to go out on a whale watching cruise . Keep in mind that although this is an evening excursion, the sun sets really late in the summer in Juneau, so an evening excursion will mean gorgeous sunset views.

Alaska sunset view.

This whale watching trip guarantees spotting whales, and we did see whales on our trip. We sailed out in Stephens Passage on a catamaran that was ideal to maneuver this area.

Whale tail in the bay in Alaska.

While on board, dinner was an assortment of local cuisine, from fish stew to reindeer sausage to halibut, as well as a dessert bar with Alaska wild berry brownies and more.

Skagway Street Car City Tour

For our time in Skagway, we took the Skagway Street Car City Tour . This tour hit many of the main sights in Skagway in a fun 1927 sightseeing bus.

This is a relatively short excursion, but it hit some neat locations, like the Gold Rush Cemetery.

Historic grave stone.

This cemetery is a short distance from town and is the oldest cemetery in Skagway. There are gravesites for many famous characters of the Gold Rush like kingpin Jefferson “Soapy” Smith and Martin Itjen, who promoted tourism to Skagway by displaying “the world’s largest gold nugget”.

Because this excursion is shorter, we had a great experience visiting other locations in town.

In the name of “research”, we hit the Klondike Brewing Company and Skagway Brewing Company . I’d heard that beer is better in Alaska , so of course I had to try out some of the signature brews.

Woman holding a menu.

We also visited historic locations like Jeff Smiths Parlor Museum (with artifacts and stories about the legendary life of Soapy Smith), the Red Onion Saloon (with its Gold Rush bordello history.)

Bartender in old historic clothing.

A photo in front of Camp Skagway No. 1 (the historical home of the Arctic Brotherhood in a building covered with driftwood and sticks) is a must, too.

holland america kodiak excursions

We also learned some interesting trivia in our travels. For instance, in Skagway, salmon production is its largest industry, and tourism comes in second.

We also learned that Skagway high school graduates have their graduation on Holland America, even if there’s only one graduate, and they can bring a date! I thought that was pretty sweet.

Denali Extension

One of the “peak” parts of a trip to Alaska is visiting Denali , a national park with 6 million acres of wilderness and a boreal forest. It’s actually the largest forest in the world.

This means that freezing temperatures can occur for more than half the year, and trees have to be able to grow to a minimum of five meters with a canopy cover of 10%.

Due to weather conditions, the peak of Denali may not be visible all the time. The best chances to see the mountain are very early in the morning, so an earlier tour may be a better choice.

How to Get There

For this excursion, we took a motorcoach to Denali National Park from Whittier. We did stop a couple of times as it’s a long day to be on a bus that long.

Man and woman at a photo stop near Denali.

It left at 8:00 a.m. and arrived at 5:30 p.m. Again, it is a very long trip, and the excursion has you staying in Denali to be able to experience things there.

We took the motorcoach option, but you can take the train from Whittier, which would be my choice if I had to do it again.

Where to Stay

At Denali, we stayed at the McKinley Chalet Resort , which was lovely. We had a spacious room and beautiful views.

Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour

You will find many different tours to book once you’ve booked your cruise. Our tour there was the Tundra Wilderness Tour. You never know what you will see on this tour because nature is on its own schedule.

The tour before us got to see moose and brown bears – and we got to see squirrels and groundhogs! The area was still beautiful.

View in Denali National Park in Alaska for Holland America Alaska excursions review.

The tour was over five hours on a revamped school bus and not very comfortable.

Needless to say, this was a disappointing tour for us, but had we seen more exciting wildlife, we probably would have been raving about it, even with the uncomfortable bus ride.

We met a couple who saw a moose with a baby nursing! That would have been amazing. I can’t believe I’ve never seen a moose in the wild.

Other Things to Do

In the evening, we went to the Music of Denali Dinner Theater at the Gold Nugget Saloon. This was a silly show but with incredible singing talent. The food wasn’t the greatest, but what you would expect from a family-style meal with a show. You’re going for the show, not the food.

You can’t take photos or video in the show, so I have nothing to share as far as that wonderful singing!

If you’re looking for a much better meal, the food at Karstens Public House was fantastic. You will find several good restaurants within walking distance of the resort.

That being said, be aware of your surroundings as there is wildlife everywhere in this area.

Sliders on the bar at Karsten's in Denali.

Be Aware if You Do Encounter Wildlife

We did learn a lot about moose and bears just in case we ran into some, which does happen at the resort – though not often.

If you come across a moose by itself, they are not a threat to you and you are not a threat to them.

However, a mama moose is the most dangerous animal in Alaska. If you get too close it will charge you, stomp on you, and possibly kill you.

Run in a zigzag, get behind a tree, and keep the tree between you and mama.

If you see a grizzly bear, do not run because it makes them think you are prey and their natural instinct is to chase their prey. Stay still.

How to Get to Your Final Destination in Alaska

After our time in Denali, we took the Alaska Railroad McKinley Explorer to Anchorage before flying home.

Many people travel from Anchorage to Seward , which can also include Denali, and is another beautiful route.

Woman getting on a train for Holland America Alaska excursions review.

If you’ve been a reader for any length of time, you know how much I’ve enjoyed the luxury train travel in Canada .

This train is similar, though not quite as luxurious.

Train rounding a bend.

This railroad travels through some incredibly picturesque scenery. In fact, the next time I visit, I think I’d like to do an Alaska National Parks Road Trip , just so I can see more of the state.

In addition, the food was good on the railway, and drinks were included.

Tips for Cruising with Holland America

Read up on the excursions before you book them. Excursions come in all sorts of styles, from relaxing tours to hiking adventures. Some may only take a couple of hours, but others can last all day.

Before you commit to an excursion, make sure that it meets the needs of everyone in your traveling party.

Plan to have an early start. Many excursions begin early in the morning to take full advantage of the long hours of daylight in the summer.

Try not to overpack. This is always a struggle for most people who cruise. It is easy to try and pack everything you might possibly need.

A good packing list can help, but also keep in mind that you can have laundry done on the ship. There’s a large laundry bag in the room that you can fill up and have washed for $20.

Making use of that, you can even pack for a 10-day adventure in a carry-on like we did!

One other note, if you are ending in Anchorage as we did, Orso restaurant is fabulous and I’d highly recommend a reservation. The food there was outstanding.

We hope this Holland America Alaska excursions review helps you to plan the best bucket list trip to Alaska ever!

Frequently Asked Questions

It is always a good idea to have a passport when you travel on a cruise in case you need to be transported home from another country. In particular, Alaska cruises often start, end, or travel to Canada for one port of call. We began our cruise in Vancouver.

The demographic for Holland America cruises is older than some other cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean or Disney, but you will find families with children of all ages on Alaska sailings with Holland America. And remember, there are usually more kids during school breaks, like spring break or over the holidays.

During each week-long cruise, there are usually two formal nights. For other evenings, dinner dress is “smart-casual”, which includes slacks and collared shirts or sweaters for men, and skirts or trousers with a sweater or blouse for women. For the rest of the time, casual attire is appropriate.

Inside Passage to Arctic Circle: Cruise Alaska for a month with this epic new itinerary

Gene Sloan

It just might be the most epic Alaska cruise ever.

Holland America on Tuesday unveiled plans for an unusually long voyage to the Last Frontier that will include calls in remote areas that most cruise ships never visit.

The Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage, as Holland America calls it, will be 28 nights long — four times the length of the typical Alaska sailing — and include stops in more than a dozen ports.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Kicking off in Seattle on June 9, 2024, it will also include a passage through the Bering Strait into the Arctic Ocean that will be timed for the summer solstice — the longest day of the year.

The timing will result in 24 hours of daylight, as the ship will be sailing above the Arctic Circle.

The trip is unlike anything the line has ever done before. It will take place on the 1,964-passenger Westerdam, one of six ships that Holland America plans to deploy to the Alaska market for the summer of 2024. It'll be a departure from Westerdam's normal schedule of seven-night Alaska sailings out of Seattle.

In addition to a passage through the Bering Strait to the Arctic Circle, the 28-night voyage will include a rare call at Nome, one of the northernmost settlements in the United States. Home to fewer than 4,000 people, it's perhaps best known as the finish line for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. It's also known for its proximity to Russia, which is just a few hundred miles to the west.

Other unusual stops include the remote settlement of Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands. Known as the largest fisheries port in the U.S. by volume of fish caught, it has been made famous in recent years as the setting for the Discovery Channel reality television series "Deadliest Catch."

In addition, Westerdam will sail into Cook Inlet for an overnight call at Anchorage, Alaska's biggest town. Few ships on Alaska cruises ever visit Anchorage due to the distance of travel required to reach it through Cook Inlet.

holland america kodiak excursions

The remote town of Kodiak, Alaska, on Kodiak Island, is also on the itinerary. The island is particularly known for its large population of Kodiak bears — the largest subspecies of brown bears.

Other stops in Alaska will include Skagway, Homer, Juneau, Ketchikan, Seward, Sitka, Valdez and Wrangell. The voyage also will bring a visit to Prince Rupert in Canada.

The sailing will include scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park as well as at Tracy Arm, College Fjord, Prince William Sound and Hubbard Glacier — all known for their spectacular Alaskan scenery.

Holland America announced the new itinerary Tuesday to coincide with Alaska statehood day celebrations.

The itinerary announcement comes as Holland America is in the midst of adding more long itineraries to its schedule. Always known for a wider mix of longer, more destination-intensive itineraries than many of its competitors, Holland America is doubling down on longer itineraries as a focus for the coming year and beyond.

In addition to the new 28-night cruise to Alaska, the line announced it would offer two 14-night sailings to the state in 2024 — its first such sailings in five years.

Like the 28-night itinerary, the sailings will bring rare visits to Anchorage as well as Kodiak, Homer, Valdez and a mix of other more traditional Alaska ports such as Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway.

In an exclusive interview with The Points Guy in advance of the announcement, Holland America chief commercial officer Beth Bodensteiner said the new 28-night Alaska itinerary was something she hoped the line could do every year in the future.

"It's a great way to offer something unique and have us ... kind of step out of the mainstream for a few weeks," Bodensteiner said, adding that the itinerary offered the chance to "cross something off your bucket list."

Related: The 6 coolest things to do on an Alaska cruise

Bodensteiner said Holland America's itinerary planning team worked hard to build the itinerary around getting passengers into the Arctic Circle right at the summer solstice, offering a rare chance to see a day without a sunset.

"That timing is a great example [of] how talented our itinerary planning team is, that they think of that kind of thing," she said. "That's sort of what they started on. They [said,] wouldn't it be great to be this far north for summer solstice? And then they back into" planning for the rest of the itinerary.

Fares for the new 28-night itinerary start at $4,259 per person, not including taxes and fees of up to $645.
