Asus TUF Gaming F15 Review: A 1080p Gaming Powerhouse

A budget gaming laptop that excels at productivity, too..

Who says mid-range laptops can't pack some power? Asus's TUF Gaming F15, equipped with a 12th gen Intel i7-12700H processor and one of the latest Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards, may be a mid-range machine, but we found that this $1,499.99 laptop is ready to play the latest titles without any hiccups at 1080p. However, just because it houses powerful components doesn’t mean everything else, like the webcam, touchpad, and speakers are up to snuff.

Still, the Asus TUF Gaming F15 is one of the better choices for strong 1080p gaming among the endless sea of mid-range options. On top of its gaming capabilities, it excels at productivity tasks, meaning the laptop is one of the best gaming laptops under $1,500 .

Design of the Asus TUF Gaming F15

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 comes in a dark gray (or premiere white), meant to blend into any professional or casual environment, and it does. This iteration of the Gaming F15 sports minimized branding on the lid, which only includes a streamlined design of TUF shield at the center. 

When you lift it open, there’s also a notch that houses the 720p webcam with which you can lift the lid. On the left side of the laptop, there is a port for the power adapter, an Ethernet port, an  HDMI 2.0 port, a USB 3.2 Type-A port, a 3.5 mm jack, one USB 3.2 Type-C port and a Thunderbolt 4 port. On the right side is a single USB 3.2 Type-A port.

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 measures at 13.94 x 9.88 x 0.78 inches and weighs 4.41 pounds. Competitors like the Acer Nitro 5 come in at 14.19 x 10.67 x 1.06 inches and 5.51 pounds. Alternatively, the Alienware x14 R1 is slightly lighter at 12.66 x 10.35 x 0.57 inches and 4.06 pounds. Then there’s the MSI Pulse GL66 , at 14.13 x 10.20 x 0.94 inches and 4.63 pounds.

We reviewed the Asus TUF Gaming F15 (2022) with an Intel Core i7-12700H and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. The GPU has 6 GB of GDDR6 and a max graphics power of 140W, which explains how the Gaming F15 blows its competition out of the water when it comes to strong 1080p gaming. Competitors like Acer Nitro 5 (2022) and the Alienware x14 with RTX 3050 (4GB, DDR6) and 3060 (8GB, DDR5) cards, respectively.

When I played Hitman 3 (ultra settings, 1080p), everything ran smoothly and at a consistent 54 frames per second. As Agent 47, I efficiently assassinated foes and moved around the farmland of Colorado without any stutter. When I played Control (high settings, 1080p), I turned RTX settings to high and used DLSS to downscale the resolution to 720p. This maintained fluid gameplay at a consistent 56 fps while utilizing 99% of the GPU. Without DLSS, Control drops down to a jittery 30 fps.

On the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark (1080p, highest settings), the Gaming F15 churned out 74 fps. Meanwhile, the MSI Pulse GL66 (with an RTX 3060) achieved 68 fps, followed by the Alienware x14 R1 (RTX 3060), which got 62 fps, and the Acer Nitro 5’s (RTX 3050) 52 fps.

During benchmarks for Grand Theft Auto V (1080p, very high) the Gaming F15 hit an impressive 90 fps, followed by the Pulse’s 83 fps, Alienware’s 70 fps, and Acer Nitro 5’s 61 fps.

On the Far Cry 6 (1080p, ultra) benchmark, the Gaming F15 reached 97 fps, this time followed by Alienware with 94 fps, the Pulse with 83 fps, and the Acer Nitro at 70 fps. 

On the benchmark for Borderlands 3 (1080p, "badass" settings), the Gaming F15 outperformed once again with 65 fps. The Alienware and the Pulse were neck and neck with 54 and 52 fps, respectively.

Finally, during the   Red Dead Redemption 2 benchmark (1080p, medium), the Gaming F15 cleaned house with the most frames at 59 fps. The Pulse followed at 51 fps with the  Alienware at 48 fps.

On gaming laptops, we stress test by running the Metro Exodus benchmark on RTX settings 15 times, simulating about half an hour of gameplay. The title ran at an average of 67.85 frames per second with some fluctuations throughout.

During the stress test, CPU speeds came in at an average of 3.71 GHz on the performance cores and 2.77 GHz on the efficiency cores. The temperature of the chip averaged 78.7 degrees Celsius (173.66 Fahrenheit), the same as the GPU. The GPU ran at an average of 1,425.59 MHz.

Productivity Performance on the Asus TUF Gaming F15

We tested the Asus TUF Gaming F15 with an Intel Core i7-12500H with 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 1TB of SSD storage. Although the laptop had little to no competition on the gaming front, competing laptops gave the Gaming F15 more of a challenge during productivity tests.

On Geekbench 5.4, the Gaming F15 earned an impressive single-core score of 1,781 and  multi-core score of 12,705. The Alienware x14 R1 (i7-12700H) followed up with a single-core of 1,471 and multi-core of 13,353. In the rear were the Acer Nitro 5 (i5-12500H) with a 1,452 single and 9,148 multi-core score and the MSI Pulse GL66 (i7-11800H) with a 1,579 and 6,949 core scores. 

During our Handbrake test, the Gaming F15 was the fastest to transcode a 4K video to 1080p, at 4 minutes and 49 seconds. The Alienware was slightly behind at 5:04, followed by the Acer Nitro 5 at 5:58 and MSI Pulse GL66 at 8:30.

The Asus TUF Gaming F15  copied 25GB of test files at an average of 607.64MBps, the slowest of the bunch, the Acer was the fastest at 1,240.65 MBps, with the Alienware right behind at 1,156.07MBps. The Pulse GL66 is the slowest at 801.1MBps.

Display on the Asus TUF Gaming F15

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 sports a 15-inch FHD 1920 x 1080p display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 300 Hz refresh rate. Those specs sound solid for gaming, but you'll need to pay more money if you want the best-looking display. Still, this one does a decent job, especially among its competitors.

I fired up the Disney Plus app to watch the penultimate episode of Moon Knight and was impressed by the sharp image and its color accuracy. Despite initially seeing the episode in 4K on my TV, the show still looked fantastic via the laptop. The sterile white halls that our protagonists find themselves in are bright and vibrant, no doubt thanks to the display’s 324 nits of brightness. The only competing laptop with a brighter screen is the Alienware x14 R1 with 377 nits.

However, games like Control looked washed out and bland in lighter areas. Colors didn’t pop as much as I thought they should in lighter locations where rays of light bounce off every wall, although they captured the darker corridors of the office space well enough. I feel like HDR could have solved these lack of vibrancy issues, but it may have added significantly to the cost of the laptop. 

The Gaming F15's panel covered 79.5% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 112% of the sRGB gamut. Meanwhile, the Alienware showed off 110% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 77.7% of the sRGB gamut. The Acer Nitro 5 and MSI Pulse GL66 offered lower results here overall.

Keyboard and Touchpad on the Asus TUF Gaming F15

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 has a full keyboard complete with a number pad. Along the top of the keyboard are dedicated keys for the volume, mute the microphone, and open Asus’ Armoury Crate app. Using the Fn key in conjunction with the function keys allows you to cycle through the keyboard’s three lighting effects, change between “performance” and “silent” operation modes and more.

I enjoyed typing on the Gaming F15’s keyboard, the keycaps felt pleasant to touch and the switches were responsive. I also enjoy the added flair of the RGB lighting behind the keys. There are even clear caps for the WASD keys, which is a thoughtful nod to PC players.

My usual score on the 10fastfingers.com typing test is 60 words per minute with a desktop keyboard, and my score only dropped to 51 words per minute on this keyboard with roughly the same accuracy.

On the other hand, I did not enjoy the trackpad. It takes more effort than it should to click. I also thought the dimensions of the trackpad (4 x 2 inches) itself to be a bit small and could have benefited from being bigger.

Audio on the Asus TUF Gaming F15

Although the Asus TUF Gaming F15 has a hi-res certification and Dolby Atmos capabilities, its dual speaker audio speaker is usable, but I'd like something stronger. There’s only a single speaker above the keyboard and another hidden in the bottom bezel of the display. You can hear well enough when it's nearby, even subtle things like someone's footsteps were audible enough as I was watching Moon Knight . But I’ve heard superior audio quality from other Atmos-enabled laptops, such as the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 Carbon . 

The speakers handled music better than I thought, but it was still lacking. I listened to “Keisha From Belly” by Panama Plus and it had decent clarity. However, the speakers were barely able to make kicks from the track audible.

Upgradeability on the Asus TUF Gaming F15

The Asus TUF Gaming F15’s bottom plate is held by 12 Torx screws. They came off easily enough, and I didn’t need to apply much pressure with my prying tool to get the plate off. I immediately noticed a black protective film covering the laptop’s two slotted DDR5 RAM sticks and its occupied SSD slot. Underneath the black film was silver film covering the SSD slot, and below the SSD was the 90 Whr battery. Battery Life on the TUF Gaming F15.

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 lasted for seven hours and thirty-five minutes on our battery test, which continuously browses the web, streams video, and runs OpenGL tests while connected to Wi-Fi with the screen set to 150 nits of brightness. The Acer Nitro 5 and Alienware x14 R1 tied at 5:33. The MSI Pulse GL66 barely lasted over 3 hours.

Heat on the TUF Gaming F15

I tested the Asus TUF Gaming F15 to see how hot to the touch it gets while running the Metro Exodus stress test. At the center of the keyboard, the laptop reached 49.5 Celsius (121.01 degrees Fahrenheit) and wasn’t too hot to touch or type comfortably. Although it was noticeable when the fan came on, it wasn’t extremely loud. The touchpad remained cooler at 28.8 Celsius (83.84 Fahrenheit) and the bottom, which is usually the hottest spot, measured the temperature as the keyboard.

Despite the TUF's display's great color accuracy, the Asus TUF Gaming F15’s 720p webcam is quite the opposite. The bronze tone of my skin alongside the reds in my Gaming F15 chair was completely washed out. The wall and my air purifier in the background were grainy and it was hard to see any details from the latter, such as the branding on the front and the small holes in the grate. Use this in a pinch, but most people should consider one of the best webcams instead.

Software and Warranty on the Asus TUF Gaming F15

There are two preinstalled apps from Asus: Armoury Crate and MyAsus. Armoury Crate displays real-time stats of your CPU/GPU, how much memory and storage is being used, the fan speed, and the temperature of your device.

Meanwhile, MyAsus is a hub that allows users to run diagnostics, customize the keyboard backlight, choose power & performance settings, access AI-noise cancellation features, and more.

Other than that, there’s minimal Windows 11 bloatware installed, including Disney Plus and Spotify.

Asus sells the TUF Gaming F15 with a one-year warranty.

Asus TUF Gaming F15 Configurations

We reviewed the sole, $1,499.99 configuration of the Asus TUF Gaming F15 (FX507ZM-ES74) with an Intel Core i7-12700H processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. It also features a 15-inch, 1920 x 1080 display with a 300 Hz refresh rate.

Bottom Line

The Asus TUF Gaming F15 is a powerful 1080p gaming laptop with solid productivity performance. However, don’t expect your games to look as beautiful as they should. You’ll be able to game without a hiccup. While our colorimeter showed the display beating competitors, I still wished for something a bit nicer at this price.

While the webcam, touchpad, and speakers may be secondary concerns for some PC gamers, those who will use this as a productivity notebook may want to consider options other than the F15 because of it. The Gigabyte Aero 16 excels at productivity and can do some great 1080p gaming. It even has an OLED display for only a few extra hundred bucks than the Gaming F15. But for  $1,499, the Asus TUF Gaming F15 is a strong mid-range choice to enter the RTX 30 series club with.

The ASUS HQ Tour: Testing Facilities

As part of our Computex trip this year, ASUS gave us a guided tour of its testing facilities at the ASUS headquarters in Northern Taipei. As part of this tour, we also spoke to engineers making sure that the features work to specifications, how they test, and also an interview with Dr Albert Chang, the Senior Division Director in R&D for the entire Motherboard Business Unit which will be in another post later this week.

It seems to be a common theme with motherboard manufacturer HQs in Taiwan: they all seem to be on the outskirts of the city limits. We have covered ASRock , ECS  and GIGABYTE  in the past, and with the exception of ASRock, the other two and ASUS have very obvious and dedicated buildings featuring the logo, as well as a dedicated entrance hall for visitors, employees, customers and the press. Even during our Friday afternoon tour, the building was very busy.

As with most of these companies, the entrance to the building is adorned with artworks and company philosophies. To the right of the front door is a Mona Lisa crossed with a surreal melting Dali-esque frame, with the image made from motherboard PCB components:

ASUS, like many other large technology companies, offer facilities to their employees in terms of food and fitness. The HQ offers a gym, a swimming pool and a full sized sports hall:

At the end of my tour, back at the second floor coffee shop, this hall had become full of people playing volleyball in different guises. As many Asian businesses like to do, keeping their employees fit and healthy (and perhaps monitoring their physical fitness) is part of promoting a strong work ethic.

Despite being a building that only employees (and guests) can enter, it seems to make business sense to open a Starbucks franchise just below the gym and pool. As a side-business in the building to keep the workforce happy, I assume ASUS does not need to make profit on this, and it is worth noting that my tour guides each had 200 NT (Taiwanese Dollars, about $6.60) to spend in the nourishment facilities in the building per day.

For those employees that worked later hours, beyond 6PM even on a Friday, the food hall provided six different types of food including vegetarian, native Taiwanese cuisine, Korean cuisine and a buffet style service.

Next to the cash machine and banking facilities was this little gem – one of ASUS’ posters to help reduce waste within the company and aim to keep energy use down.

My tour consisted of two main parts – a trip upstairs to a testing and QVL lab, and a trip to the basement for the extended testing facilities.

Normally a laptop refresh isn't all that exciting. It's usually a slight bump in performance here or a small aesthetic change there. However, thanks to an assist from Nvidia, the updated 17-inch Asus G751JY (starting at $1,499, reviewed at $2,499) lives up to the hype. The latest gaming laptop with Nvidia's G-Sync technology, the G751JY offers smooth graphics with virtually no tearing or latency. Add that to the laptop's stunning looks, blistering specs and rich display, and you've got one of the best gaming laptops on the market.

Divine Design

For a hulking gaming laptop, the G751JY is still one of the prettiest rigs I've laid eyes on. I love looking at and fondling the lid because of its slick transition from the black-matte, soft-touch finish on the top and sides to the cool, slippery, brushed-aluminum in the center. The Asus logo and bright red Republic of Gamers emblem reside demurely in the middle, enticing you to stare.

Around back, you'll notice the vivid red vents that are doing their best supercar impression. A small ROG emblem in the center completes the luxe, yet powerful look Asus is going for.

As lovely as the exterior is, like with all clubs, the real party is inside. Opening the G751JY, you'll see the same keyboard deck from the previous model , rocking more of the sumptuous black soft-touch finish.

The full-size Chiclet keyboard with a full num pad still glows an alluring, yet slightly menacing red. To hammer home the point that this is indeed a gaming notebook, Asus placed buttons to launch XSplit GameCaster and Steam in the top left corner of the keyboard deck, and a key to start the Asus Gaming Center near the num pad.

Although nothing can compare to a mechanical keyboard, the G751JY's keyboard with its scissor switches delivers impressive feedback to the tune of 1.9mm of key travel and 69g of actuation (force needed to depress the keys). I exceeded my usual words-per-minute score on the 10 Fast Fingers test, hitting 70 wpm instead of 60 wpm.

At 4.8 x 2.6 inches, the Elan touchpad is massive, and adeptly handled such gestures as two-finger rotate, pinch-zoom and switching between apps. The two discrete mouse buttons are nice and springy and emit a gentle click when depressed.

G-Sync: Buttery smooth, Batman

It might look like the same old G751JY, but the laptop has some new additions that seriously up its game. The G751JY is one of the first gaming laptops to ship with Nvidia's new G-Sync technology, which synchronizes the display's refresh rate with the graphics card, effectively capping frame rates at a consistent level.

You might be asking yourself, "But aren't lower frame rates bad?" Usually, but not this time, fellow gamer, because the capping actually eliminates screen tearing and input lag. The last portion is especially important for FPS and fighting game fanatics who know the difference between giving or receiving a K.O. sometimes comes down to that last quick jab or power move (Hadoukens for everyone!).

G-Sync also has an anti-ghosting technology named Variable Overdrive that enables faster color transitions in variable refresh-rate environments. In layman's terms, not only will your game run smoother with less lag, but it'll also be prettier overall.

I put G-Sync to the test in Batman: Arkham Knight after raising the game's cap limit to 100 fps. With the feature disabled, but with all other settings pushed to high at 1080p, the G751JY hit an average 70 fps, which rose to 77 fps on low. With G-Sync enabled, the laptop delivered 50 fps on high and 63 fps on low.

When G-Sync was disabled, I saw significant tearing when I swung the camera around 360 degrees. There was also noticeable lag when I was fighting a pack of thugs, as I noticed a slight delay between my button presses and the command being executed. These problems were virtually eliminated when G-Sync was enabled.

I do have one complaint about the feature, however, and it's that you have to go digging in the Nvidia Control panel to enable or disable G-Sync. I would love the ability to access this in GeForce Experience, but I'm lazy like that.

Serious Gaming Power (But Not the Best)

The G751JY impressed on the BioShock Infinite benchmark, delivering 151 fps on low at 1080p, which is well above the 129 fps desktop replacement average. However, on high settings, the G751JY dropped to 67 fps, while the Dominator Pro (86 fps) and Alienware 17 (70 fps) fared better.

During the Metro: Last Light benchmark, one of our most grueling tests, the G751JY produced a solid 89 fps on low special effects at 1080p. That was enough to topple the 73 fps average, as well as the Alienware 17's 58 fps. The Dominator Pro proved too much for its competitors, with a score of 109 fps.

Metro lived up to its demanding reputation on High, causing the G751JY to drop to an unplayable 20 fps, while the Alienware 17 and Dominator Pro hit 32 and 34 fps, respectively.

A Feast for the Eyes and Ears

The G751JY's 17-inch, 1080p matte screen is a font of rich color and sharp details. Like most Asus notebooks, the G751JY comes pre-installed with the Splendid utility that offers four profiles (Normal, Theater, Vivid and Manual) and adjusts the panel's color temperature. I settled on the Vivid setting, as it delivered the best-looking results.

As I glided over the streets of Gotham in Arkham Knight, I had time to appreciate the way the raindrops hit Batman's cape, creating individual streams that broke off into even smaller tributaries. I also marveled at the giant plants that burst through the streets, slowly reclaiming the city in a thicket of green, violet and neon orange.

The G751JY reproduced 106.9 percent of the sRGB color gamut on our testing, which is higher than the 96 percent average. The Alienware 17 was right on its tail, at 106.3 percent, while the Dominator Pro delivered 101 percent.

When tested for color accuracy, the G751JY notched a Delta-E score of 1.6 (lower is better), which is much better than the 4.8 desktop replacement average. The Dominator Pro was a close second, at 1.7, while the Alienware 17 posted a disappointing 5.3.

Without the Asus AudioWizard software, the G751JY's roar is easily reduced to a whimper. When this software is enabled, however, the laptop produces clean, relatively balanced audio. The melancholy strings that accompany much of Arkham Knight tensed and relaxed as I fought off a militia unit as though the music were punching and flipping with me. The dialogue was loud and pronounced, and the Batmobile's cannon delivered a weighty boom that was often accompanied by the sound of crumbling brick and breaking glass.

Crazy-Fast SSD

Since most of us can't spend all of our time gaming, Asus made sure the G751JY can multitask and process spreadsheets with the best of them. The laptop's 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor with 24GB of RAM nimbly streamed an episode of "Black Mirror" while I played Witcher 3 in another window with 20 open tabs in Google Chrome . Geralt's hair continued to cascade heroically down his back despite all the background activity. The processor can be clocked to 3.6-GHz if you want to access all of the chip's power.

The G751JY's 256GB PCIe m.2 SSD is inordinately fast. It loaded Batman: Arkham Knight in 7 seconds and delivered a face-melting speed of 1,018 MBps on the File Transfer Test. To put things in perspective, the average is 260.9 MBps. The Alienware 17 (256GB SSD) and Dominator Pro (Dual 128GB SSD) were left in dust, at 147.9 and 188.9 MBps, respectively.

The laptop scored a very good 13,271 on Geekbench 3, a synthetic test that measures overall performance. This showing was enough to top both the 11,263 desktop replacement average and the 12,965 score achieved by the Alienware 17 (2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-4710HQ CPU). However, the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro's newer, 5th-generation processor (2.7-GHz Intel Core i7-5700HQ CPU) bested both systems, with a score of 14,229.

Can It Take the Heat?

The notebook stayed pleasantly cool throughout our less demanding testing. I watched The Amazing World of Gumball on Hulu Plus for 15 minutes, after which we measured the notebook's temperature at several key points. The touchpad hit 84 degrees Fahrenheit, while the space between the G and H key hit 87 degrees. The bottom of the laptop registered 93 degrees, which is two degrees below our 95-degree comfort threshold.

Once the laptop cooled down, I took a 15-minute jaunt through Novigrad, dispatching ghouls and wraiths in Witcher III: The Wild Hunt. When I was done, the touchpad registered a cool 80 degrees and the space between the G and H key measured 86 degrees. The notebook's undercarriage temperature dropped slightly, to 91 degrees. Despite the laptop's large dimensions, I barely heard the fans, even when I was playing in the relative quiet of the Laptop Mag testing lab.

Software: The gamer's toolbox

For a gaming laptop, the G751JY has quite a bit of pre-installed software. Luckily, that includes a fair amount of gamer-centric software such as Asus Gaming Center, which aggregates useful information, settings and programs. From here, you can check the weather or the amount of storage and memory available, or adjust the audio and display settings.

ROG MacroKey lets you configure the three macro keys, allowing you to map keystrokes, launch apps or websites, and save them under individual profiles. GameFirst III tests bandwidth speed and configures the optimal upload and download speeds to prioritize games and other chosen programs.

Nvidia's GeForce Experience offers a wealth of helpful features, including BatteryBoost, LED Visualizer and Game Optimization, which chooses the optimal settings to net the highest frame rates. ShadowPlay lets gamers broadcast games to Twitch or YouTube in real time or record them for later use.

If you're not a fan of ShadowPlay, Asus also offers XSplit GameCaster. Depending on your subscription level, this offers high-def streaming, image overlays and in-game annotations.

Keep the Power Cord Handy

During the usual Laptop Mag Battery Test (continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits of brightness), the Asus G751JY lasted 3 hours and 17 minutes, which is well below the 5:02 average. The MSI GT72 Dominator Pro did marginally better, at 3:22, but it's the Alienware 17 that continues to raise the bar, lasting a whopping 6:25.

I also wanted to see how long the G751JY would last doing some actual gaming. So the testers ran the Metro: Last Light benchmark at 1080p on low, and the laptop tapped out after 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Configurations: Weighing your options

For this review, I took the $2,499 configuration of the G-Sync G751JY for a spin. It has a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor, 24GB of RAM, a 256GB PCIe m.2 SSD with a 1TB 7,200-rpm hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M GPU with 4GB of VRAM.

You can get the entry-level version, complete with G-Sync, for a mere $1,499. However the specs will be bumped down to a 2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-4710HQ CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB 7,200-rpm hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M GPU with 3GB of VRAM.

Bottom Line: Worth the splurge

The last version of the Asus G751JY had a lot going for it, and that's only been enhanced by adding Nvidia's G-Sync technology to the new model. The laptop offers stunning good looks with serious graphical power, blazing-fast transfer speeds and a gorgeous display that actually enhances your gameplay. My only wish is that for $2,499, Asus would have gone all in and added a 5th-gen Intel Core processor like MSI did with the $2,199 GT72 Dominator Pro .

As it stands, the G751JY is a triple threat of looks, power and speed and an excellent choice for deep-pocketed gamers.
