About TC Wine Girl

Traverse City Winery Tours

Hi, my name is Karen and I love wine tasting! It never gets old to me and I would be honored to take you and your companion/friends around the picturesque Traverse City wine country. I fell in love with both the Old Mission Peninsula and Leelanau Peninsula winery scenes on my third wedding anniversary back around the turn of the century. Touring Old Mission or Leelanau Peninsula is always fun, but it's even better when you aren't DRIVING!! My husband and I have been wine tasting here for years and continue to go regularly. We always see tour buses, limos and shuttles carrying several people, but hardly anything when it comes to transportation for just two people like us. Uber and Lyft are both an option, however they take a longggggggggg time arriving up on the peninsula. I believe it's best to spend more time wine tasting and less time worrying about transportation. I started this company so couples or small groups can make the most of their wine-tasting adventure time plus enjoy it in style!

The Wineries of Traverse City

When you think of Traverse City you think of food and wine… and for good reason. Old Mission is on the 45th parallel, which is the exact parallel for the world’s most famous wine-making regions. Grape vines planted in the region enjoy the perfect amount of sunlight for optimal growth. When coupled with microclimates created by Grand Traverse East & West Bays, and fertile soil, this sets the perfect stage for delicious award-winning wines that rival centuries-old grapes produced in Europe & California. Let us take you on a tour of the Traverse City wineries. Most wineries are open year-round and we have personal relationships with many of the wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. We help your group book private tours and tastings for the day.

You'll get to see some of Michigan's incredible scenery during your wine tour.

Michigan's burgeoning wine scene is impressive – it boasts more than 140 wineries throughout the state. There are more than 50 varietals grown with approximately 4,000 acres devoted to winemaking grapes. The mitten-shaped state's five distinct American Viticultural Areas have their own unique terroir and are located in the northern part of the mitt and the southwest corner of the state.

Traverse City 's location in northern lower Michigan is particularly favorable to winemaking and sits near two of the state's AVAs: Leelanau Peninsula and Old Mission Peninsula. Located on the shores of both East Grand Traverse and West Grand Traverse bays, the city sits on the 45th parallel, which is home to the Rhone Valley and Bordeaux in France and Italy's Piedmont region.

The Traverse Wine Coast area is recognized primarily for its white wines, and there are approximately 40 wineries where you can sip and savor the local vintages. Traverse City is also known for its breweries and cideries, so some of the wine tours on this list may offer those options as well.

After consulting both expert opinion and traveler sentiment, U.S. News identified the following outings as the best available. These three tours highlight the best of Traverse City's thriving wine and spirits industries.

Ticket prices begin at $99 per person and increase on Fridays and Saturdays. Ticket costs do not include the cost of the wine tastings, which range between $5 and $10 at each winery. The wineries also offer wines by the glass or flight, plus snacks like charcuterie boards, though patrons may also bring their own lunches (there's a cooler available on the bus). The Magic Shuttle Bus also offers another wine tour to the Leelanau Peninsula and a five-hour Traverse City Brewery Tour. The company also runs wine and brewery tours out of Grand Rapids .

Testimonials

Jody was great with follow up leading up to our pickup the day of the event. Luke was our driver for our tour on Old Mission… he made the trip fun and always went into the wineries before us to let them know we were there, a nice personal touch! Our group is looking forward to planning another trip in the future and we’ll certainly book with Traverse City Wine and Beer Tours again!

This was perfect for a private afternoon wine tour of Old Mission Peninsula. We were picked up outside our condo and did a 5 hour wine tour of the Old Mission Wineries.

We seriously had such a great time this past weekend during our wine tour on Old Mission Peninsula. Jody worked with us ahead of time, planned out our itinerary, contacted the wineries.

Traverse City Wineries, Wine Tasting, Tours, and Reviews

Discover traverse city wineries.

Traverse City, Leelanau Peninsula, the Old Mission Peninsula, and the Grand Traverse Bay region is home to over 40 vineyards and wineries. The combination of soil, water, climate, and geography creates the perfect environment suited for growing grapes and making wine.

Be sure to take advantage of tasting along the way as you explore the Old Mission Wineries as well as the numerous Leelanau wineries. Sample a glass of wine, while you stroll through vineyards, explore wine caves and cellars. Wine flights are great to share as you discover award-winning wines from Northern Michigan.

Don't forget to schedule enough time! It’s easy to spend an entire weekend or more taking in everything that the Grand Traverse wine region has to offer.

World Class Views, World Class Wines

The Traverse City region offers breathtaking views, with the colored waters of the Grand Traverse Bay, to the rolling vineyards, the Traverse Wine Coast is amazing. Bring your camera and take plenty of photos! Lake Michigan is nearby and you might consider a side trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes or maybe a hike at Alligator Hill. There are a few wineries nearby.

Wine from Northern Michigan rivals other famous areas like Napa and Sonoma. Traverse City wineries have won accolades by critics as well as in judged competition. Our amazing wines are world class! Which will your favorite be? Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, maybe a Cherry wine?

Located on the 45th parallel, geographically the region is split roughly in two by the Old Mission and the Leelanau peninsulas . Each of these have unique microclimates and soil that influence the vines and the grapes that are grown in each area. Subtle differences in altitude and sunlight exposure on the rolling hills really can affect the grapes and how the wine tastes. Each winery is utterly unique and special.

Most Traverse City wineries also have vineyard and winery tours, host weddings and private parties, offer live music and entertainment, and of course spectacular views all year round.

The Grand Traverse Bay Area is one of Michigan's most scenic regions. The area offers visitors a variety of activities including hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and golfing. Visitors can also enjoy the many festivals held throughout the year.

Traverse City Wine Tasting

Explore your passion for wine. The region offers a variety including white, reds, rose's, fruit, and sparkling wines.

Almost every winery in the region has tasting room and offers wine tasting. Most charge a small fee, a few are even free! Typically flights of wines are around $5 - 7. Quite a bargain considering many west coast wineries charge much more. Private tastings are offered by many allowing guests a more intimate experience while they discover their favorite wines.

The best part about visiting a winery is that there is no obligation to buy anything. You can taste what you want and then decide if you'd like to purchase some bottles. If you're interested in purchasing wine, be sure to ask about discounts on bulk purchases. Many wineries offer discounts for large orders. Wine club members qualify for special discounts too!

Not just wine... Beer, Hard Cider, and Mead too!

More and more wineries are offering hard Cider and Mead . Its no surprise considering the abundant fruit orchards on the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas. And of course, Traverse City is home to some of the best craft breweries too!

Traverse City Wine Tours

Why not take a tour and see the behind the scenes process of making wine? Most wineries and vineyards offer tours of their facilities.

These tours typically include a visit to the cellar where the grapes are stored before they go through the crushing process. The crush pad is usually located near the entrance of the facility. From here the crushed grapes are transferred into tanks and barrels.

You'll often find a barrel aging rooms. Barrels come in different sizes and shapes and each type of wood imparts its own unique flavor. Some winemakers use oak barrels while others prefer stainless steel.

Guided Tours

Perhaps the best way to visit the area wineries and enjoy a day of tasting, is to take a chauffeured guided tour. The driver or guides have in-depth knowledge of each winery and can help you choose which wineries best suit your tastes and schedule. And let’s not forget that a guided tour reduces the chance of spoiling your trip with a DUI or worse.

Traverse City: Where you can match your lodging to your leisure

Friday, August 23, 2024 2:00 PM by Traverse City Tourism

Girlfriends shopping indoors

Love wine tasting? Then stay right at the vineyard. Looking forward to your tee time? Book a room on the golf course.

The Traverse City area has more amenities and more lodging options than anywhere else in northern Michigan, so it’s easy to find the perfect place to hang out for a few days while enjoying your favorite things to do. If you’re a beach bum, you can find a spot on the water. If you’re a foodie, you can grab a room right downtown within walking distance of many unique restaurants. And if you can’t wait to get out on the trail, you can reserve a cottage right in the midst of Mother Nature.

The Traverse City area encompasses the pinky finger of the Mitten, an absolutely gorgeous region of our state with a vibrant urban center, delightful small towns and two rolling peninsulas that showcase Michigan’s agricultural splendor.

The spectacular natural beauty provides endless opportunities for adventure and is complemented by thousands of hotel rooms, condos, B&Bs, cottages, cabins, resorts and short-term rentals at a wide range of price points.

Here’s a closer look at some of the most popular ways to have fun this time of year, and how you can find the best lodging for your leisure:

Couple on bikes looking out to bay

Outdoor Recreation

Whether you love to bike along a paved trail in town or a dirt path through the woods, the Traverse City area is the place to pedal. Ditto for hiking in Traverse City, which can take you down through the VASA Pathway or high above the water in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Whether you prefer to cast a line in a quiet fishing hole, paddle around the bay or rip a jet ski through the surf, the Traverse City area is ideal for watersports, too, including the perennial family favorite: tubing down the Platte River!

Where to Stay:

From cute vintage campers at the Betsie River Campsite near Frankfort to stylish Scandinavian cabins at KOTI in Williamsburg, there are cottages and cabins all over the Traverse City area near recreational attractions. You also can find vacation rentals close to rivers, lakes and dunes as well as hotels and motels with conveniences such as free breakfast and indoor pools.

Skipping Stones on the beach

From the secluded sands and rocky shores of Sleeping Bear Dunes to quiet inland swimming areas and the busy bayfront in downtown Traverse City, there’s a variety of freshwater beaches to enjoy in the Traverse City area.

That includes several pet-friendly options where your dog can splash around and play fetch.

The stretch of U.S. 31 through downtown Traverse City offers no fewer than a dozen places to stay right on Grand Traverse Bay. The Traverse City area also offers waterfront accommodations on Lake Michigan and on several inland lakes and rivers. There are pet-friendly places to stay, too.

Food at Vita Bella

Farm-to-Table Food and Drink

Late summer and early fall are primetime for farm markets as the harvest dates arrive for so many fruits and vegetables. Beyond that, the Traverse City area does farm-to-table dining better than anywhere with delicious local ingredients showing up in dishes at restaurants across the region.

It goes without saying that the nearly 50 wineries in the Traverse City area gather their juices from area vineyards. The same is true for many of the breweries, cideries and distilleries around Traverse City, where you can find one-of-a-kind flavors made with local northern Michigan ingredients.

There are so many great places to stay in downtown Traverse City right in the middle of the Most Exciting Foodie Town in Michigan. You also could stay right at a vineyard at Chateau Chantal on Old Mission Peninsula or in the Inn at Black Star Farms on the Leelanau Peninsula and never be far from the tasting room.

Golfing

World-Class Golf

The Traverse City area is home to three world-class golf resorts where you can find courses designed by Hall of Famers Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as well as Michigan legends Bill Newcomb and Jerry Matthews. Yet, there’s a dozen other championship golf courses that also put the Traverse City area on the map.

Not far from Crystal Mountain Resort are the scenic, heather-lined fairways of Champion Hill along with Pinecroft and Crystal Lake golf courses, which both offer views of Crystal Lake. Near A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort is the 9-hole Elk Rapids Golf Club, designed by Donald Ross, one of the top golf course architects ever.

If The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is too tough, then play The Crown or Elmbrook, both located just minutes from downtown. Or venture into the Leelanau Peninsula where you can soak up the gorgeous on-course scenery of Bahle Farms and Sugar Loaf.

The golf resorts are ideal for a golf getaway, of course. But wherever you stay in the Traverse City area, there’s a golf course nearby.

Leland - Fishtown

Small-Town Sightseeing

From downtown Frankfort north along the Lake Michigan shoreline to Empire, Glen Arbor, Leland, and Northport, there are cute little port towns all over the Traverse City area. Now is a great time of year to slow down and relax amid the charming Americana of the Traverse City area, browsing boutique shops, strolling through art galleries, and sitting down to meals on outdoor patios in the refreshing northern Michigan breeze.

Come discover historic Fishtown, explore the mind-boggling variety of items at Cherry Republic, admire the fascinating artistry at Spörck Tileart, pick through the amusing antiques at The Miser’s Hoard, or step back into the past at the Old Mission General Store.

The Hotel Frankfort and the six-room Old Mission Inn, Michigan’s oldest hotel, are among the historical places to stay in the Traverse City that match the charm of the region’s small towns. You also can find delightful B&Bs scattered across the Traverse City area.
