Amarnath Yatra concludes, devotees laud MRTs for making pilgrimage memorable

Srinagar, More than a dozen Mountain Rescue Teams assisted thousands of pilgrims during this year's Amarnath pilgrimage in the south Kashmir Himalayas, officials said on Monday, as the annual yatra concluded with more than 5.10 lakh pilgrims offering prayers at the cave shrine.

Amarnath Yatra concludes, devotees laud MRTs for making pilgrimage memorable

The Mountain Rescue Teams comprising personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, State Disaster Response Force , National Disaster Response Force , and the Central Reserve Police Force was flagged off by Additional Director General of Police Vijay Kumar and deployed on the twin tracks leading to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine nearly a week before the start of the 52-day pilgrimage on June 29.

While eight MRTs manned the critical spots on 48-kilometre traditional Pahalgam route in Anantnag district, five were positioned along the shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal district.

"After two back-to-back recce of the twin routes, all 13 MRTs were stationed at the identified spots by June 24 and helped rescue more than 1,300 pilgrims in dire need, besides providing oxygen to 20,000 others during the yatra," Inspector Ram Singh, the MRT in-charge, told PTI.

Singh created history by becoming the first personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police to scale the world's highest peak Mount Everest in May 2008.

He said the teams also helped a large number of local service providers and the security personnel who suffered from altitude sickness, braving life-threatening challenges in the snowbound, high-altitude tracks.

He said the MRTs also distributed over 20,000 raincoats free of cost among the pilgrims.

More than 5.10 lakh pilgrims from across the country and abroad visited the cave shrine, housing a naturally formed ice lingam, during the yatra, which concluded with Chhari Mubarak the silver-robed mace of Lord Shiva reaching the cave shrine on Monday afternoon on the occasion of Shravan Purnima, coinciding with festival of Raksha Bandhan.

Singh, who is scheduled to get back to the base camp in Srinagar after the return of the Chhari Mubarak from the cave in the next few days, said each MRT team operated in its area of responsibility, covering the entire yatra track, including Sheshnag, Mahagunas Top, Poshpatri, Dardkote, Sangam Top, Brarimarg and Railpathri.

Each member of the team had an individual kit with gaiters, overmitts and equipped with mountain rescue equipment such as carabiners, jumars, descending rappels, avalanche rods, helmets, oxygen cylinder and first-aid kit, besides communication tools, he said.

An SDRF spokesperson said the MRTs played an invaluable role during the yatra, describing it as a journey of faith and one that tested both physical endurance and spiritual resolve.

"This year, the efforts of the SDRF and other MRTs were instrumental in ensuring the safety of the yatris, leading to minimum casualties and widespread appreciation. The SDRF was strategically deployed along the yatra route," he said.

The spokesperson said their presence ensured that help was always within reach for pilgrims in need. Whether it was altitude sickness, dehydration or injuries from falls, the teams were equipped to handle it all.

"The dedication of the MRTs was evident from their willingness to manually carry unconscious or severely ill pilgrims on their backs or stretchers, navigating the steep and rocky paths with great care. The proactive measures resulted in a significant reduction in the number of serious incidents and fatalities this year," he said.

He said their constant vigil and readiness played a key role in maintaining the safety of the pilgrims.

A video shared by the SDRF showed the pilgrims acknowledging the crucial role of the MRTs and expressing gratitude to the rescuers in making their yatra a memorable one.

"They were very helpful. Special thanks to them for their help, otherwise it was not possible for me ," a woman pilgrim said, lauding the MRTs.

Another yatri said there was no tension when the SDRF teams were around. "For us, they are a form of our Lord."

The spokesperson said the exemplary work of the MRTs had not gone unnoticed, highlighting that their presence not only provided physical assistance but also a sense of security and reassurance to the yatris.

"Their efforts have been widely recognised and appreciated, not just by the pilgrims but also the broader community and the authorities. The SDRF and other MRTs have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the pilgrims," he said.

He said their tireless efforts, advanced training and seamless coordination ensured that the yatra was one of the safest in recent memory with minimal casualties.

The spokesperson said it was the SDRF's first battalion control room and joint police control in Pahalgam that played a key role in effective coordination.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is during the summer months, from May to September. This period offers the most favorable weather and conditions for the pilgrimage. Here are some reasons why this time is considered the best:

Weather: During the summer months, the weather in the Kailash Mansarovar region is relatively mild and pleasant. The temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) during the day, making it more comfortable for trekking and outdoor activities. However, it can still get cold at night, so warm clothing is necessary.

Accessibility: The roads leading to Kailash Mansarovar are open and accessible during the summer season. The snow and ice from winter have melted, making it easier to reach the pilgrimage site. This ensures a smoother journey and minimizes the risk of road closures due to inclement weather.

Pilgrimage Circumambulation: One of the significant highlights of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the circumambulation (parikrama) of Mount Kailash. The circuit around the mountain is approximately 52 kilometers (32 miles) long and involves walking at high altitudes. The summer season offers better trekking conditions with less snow, allowing pilgrims to complete the parikrama more comfortably.

Religious Festivals: The summer months coincide with several important religious festivals, such as Saga Dawa and Guru Purnima, which are celebrated in the vicinity of Kailash Mansarovar. These festivals add a spiritual and festive atmosphere to the pilgrimage, enhancing the overall experience.

Mansarovar Lake Accessibility: The holy Mansarovar Lake, located near Mount Kailash, is a significant part of the pilgrimage. During the summer season, the lake is accessible, allowing pilgrims to take a dip or perform religious rituals in its sacred waters.

It’s important to note that the Kailash Mansarovar region is subject to high altitude and unpredictable weather conditions. Even during the summer months, temperatures can vary, and weather patterns can change rapidly. It’s advisable to check the weather forecast and be prepared for fluctuations in temperature, precipitation, and strong winds.

Overall, the summer season offers the most favorable conditions for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, providing a balance between comfortable weather, accessibility, and the opportunity to engage in religious and cultural festivities.

Inside the Rise of TikTok Travel

Electronics Phone and Mobile Phone

“I saw it on TikTok”: words spoken countless times a day, often to be met with disapproving, rolling eyes. The social media platform may not be the most reliable source for news or politics, but when it comes to travel, you may want to give it a chance.

At 20 years old, I still have much to learn about traveling and even more of the world left to explore—but as a budding travel writer and Traveler’s summer intern, I can confidently speak on TikTok. As part of the generation dubbed “digital natives,” I’ve grown up in a world where any destination is just a few clicks away, and now TikTok is elevating my—and my peers'—holiday-planning game.

It’s not just me using the tech giant for travel either. TikTok recently reported that 71 percent of its European users were booking holidays using recommendations from the platform. Experienced Gen Z traveler Abena, who has an impressive 230,000-person following on her TikTok account @travellingtuesdays , can vouch for the app too. “TikTok is where I can find recommendations that I wouldn’t necessarily discover through Google,” Abena explains. “It has actually helped me go off the beaten path and avoid crowds.”

Gone are the days of planning holidays based on blurry pictures and unverified reviews. Instead, you can find concise insider tips, itineraries formed for every occasion, and immersive videos that make you feel as though you've already arrived at your destination. The catch? You need to tap into a predominantly Gen Z platform to access it all.

Abena in New York

Since its global launch in 2018, TikTok has grown an audience of over 1 billion users , making waves among younger generations in particular with 70 percent of users aged under 34. Its impact reaches beyond the platform's users, forcing businesses to consider the booming trends and new marketing opportunities, with some companies more successful than others. RyanAir, for instance, captured the attention of millions when their light-hearted spoofs went viral, while Duolingo found a whole new audience of wannabe linguists when their green owl mascot became a social media celebrity.

If you're yet to join TikTok, planning a holiday on the app might seem like a strange idea, but for me it has become the first port of call for all my travel needs. I have tried and tested TikTok as the ultimate tour guide, whether looking for new London restaurants , planning a jam-packed Copenhagen city break, or exploring the best backpacking routes. Don’t just take it from me—the 728,000 British people who have posted holiday content in the last year would agree that if you haven’t explored TravelTok yet, you are missing out.

How popular is TikTok for travel?

To put it into perspective, TikTok posts shared with a #holiday tag have racked up an impressive 3 billion global views in the last month alone. From weekly itineraries to restaurant recommendations, travel videos are constantly trending on the platform, but with 60 percent of these viewers aged between 18 and 24, it seems mainly Gen Z is tapping into this treasure trove of content.

How is Gen Z using TikTok for travel?

When a senior vice president at Google reveals that almost 40 percent of young people go to social media before a search engine when looking for a restaurant, it’s clear that people are changing the way they browse. According to Adobe , 64 percent of Gen Z are now using TikTok as a search engine. When it comes to travel, this may be to find inspiration, check reviews or even plan an entire holiday bucket list.

Itinerary expert @traveller_bucketlist is a popular search result, with their "How to spend three days in…’ videos receiving 4.3 million views for New York , 7.2 million for Paris , and 8.7 million for London . Content creator Abena has also built a following through sharing her travel tips and itineraries. “I’ve had people plan their whole trip around my recommendations!” she tells us. As the Gen Z alternative to a guidebook, the platform attracts huge audiences with its visual-focused advice, delving into a destination within seconds.

How is the travel industry using TikTok?

It’s no longer just celebrities and influencers going viral. Restaurants, shops and other notable attractions are becoming overnight hits too. I will never forget when I discovered SUSO, a gelateria in Venice offering a mouth-watering selection of ice cream to be enjoyed with a nearby view of the floating city’s glistening canals, on TikTok. Little did I know this highly-anticipated stop on my trip to Venice would come with a crowd flooding out the doors—a queue of TikTok users who clearly had the same idea as me.

The meaning of ‘viral’ is taken to the extreme on TikTok, which can have its downfalls. A popular category on the app is ‘hidden gems’, sharing highlights of local and undiscovered culture. The problem is that when these ‘gems’ trend on TikTok, they no longer remain ‘hidden’, and the most authentic experiences quickly become oversaturated by tourists.

The Current State of Tipping Etiquette in the United States

On the flip side, some travel brands have seen the potential of going viral as a lucrative opportunity. As mentioned, RyanAir is a surprising TikTok star, with 2.3 million followers and posts reaching as many as 15 million views. The airline shot to fame for their tongue-in-cheek videos mocking themself and their passengers, a risky strategy which paid off. Using facial filters and trending comedy soundtracks, their less-is-more style kept followers entertained rather than offended, and the airline is now one of the most influential brands on the entire platform.

Shot of a young couple using a mobile phone on a road trip

Why is TikTok more popular than other social media platforms?

I know what you’re thinking. First, there was MySpace, then Instagram, and now TikTok. Is this just the latest craze in the natural course of digital evolution, destined to have a short-lived stint at keeping the youngest generation entertained until they grow up?

Maybe. But growing engagement in older generations indicates that TikTok may become the breakthrough social media which caters to all ages. TikTok Insights reports that 92 percent of Millennial and 83 percent of Gen X and Baby Boomer users from the UK take action following the content they see. This social media is successfully inspiring audiences of all ages, and so, when used correctly, can be a powerful tool for influencing all curious travelers.

So what gives TikTok an edge? The videos are short-form, suitable for busy lives and short attention spans, and accompanied by music, immersing viewers in a multi-sensory experience. The algorithm is powerful, too, giving people an ultra-personalized experience. Look up “ Tuscany ” just once, and your feed will be flooded with mouthwatering pasta dishes and romantic vineyards.

Girl looking at view of medieval village in Tuscany

However, with offshoots like YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels mimicking the short-form video format, the area TikTok really excels in is authentic story-telling. Posts are centered around the content creator, with the acronym "POV" (point of view) being one of the most commonly used captions. “I personally do a lot of voiceover videos so I can share my full experience and opinions,” Abena explains when asked how she makes her content. “Gen Z wants to find honest reviews from those with first-hand experience.”

Particularly with the long task of planning a holiday, users look for real people giving real insights in an engaging way. More so than other social media, TikTok creates a space where anyone can get traction, so travel brands, experienced influencers and even first-time travelers blend together in this open-access and diverse pool of reviews.

TikTok content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

How to get started on TikTok

For all the non-users now tempted by this social media powerhouse (I’m looking at you, Millennials), here are some top tips to ease you into TravelTok.

Look for inspiration

Start by simply exploring what’s out there. The platform provides an endless stream of montages showcasing the most dreamy places in the world, guaranteed to spark the wanderlust of all its users. Be open-minded to the content guiding your travel, and you may discover destinations beyond your wildest dreams.

Try a specific search

From offbeat islands to tiny vintage stores, it’s difficult to find something that has not been on TikTok before. Don’t hold back from searching an obscure restaurant you just booked, as chances are someone will have reviewed it or, at the very least, posted some visuals. While quality varies from influencer films to locals trying their hand at vlogging, it is always useful to see a place through the eyes of a real person.

Don’t fall for the viral traps

When somewhere is labeled “viral” on TikTok, chances are that eager crowds will follow. The platform’s clever algorithm keeps TikTok at the forefront of trends, meaning places quickly blow up while others are left overshadowed. Dig a little deeper into the app for alternatives which may have attracted less hype, but are just as worthy of the attention. If the place at the top of your bucket list has gone viral, go at off-peak times to avoid the inevitable queues.

Verify your sources

As much as I advocate for TikTok itineraries, it’s always good to finish off with a little independent research to map out exactly how your day will look. After all, TikTok is social media made up of unregulated and independent voices, so remember that the content you consume has not been fact-checked. A quick web search will help to make sure your travel plan is feasible or even real, as well as find the most up-to-date opening times, transport links and prices.

Don’t pre-visit your trip

Seeing something on screen will never beat the experience of seeing it in the flesh. Once you’ve settled on your place and itinerary, resist the temptation to watch all the clips that the algorithm will inevitably bombard you with. Uncovering a place's quirks is what makes travel memorable, so make sure to leave yourself some surprises on the day.

Timberwolves will travel more than any other NBA team next season

Tony liebert | aug 17, 2024.

May 30, 2024; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch at a press conference before game five of the western conference finals for the 2024 NBA playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks at Target Center.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves

The NBA released the entire 2024-25 schedule and it was exciting for the Timberwolves, as they will be regularly featured on national TV . However, they will also travel more miles than any other team in the league.

According to sports analytics database Positive Residual , Minnesota will travel 49,900 miles this season. The Phoenix Suns are the next closest at 48,900.

NBA 24/25, Most Miles Traveled (via @presidual ) 1. MIN 49,900 2. PDX 48,900 3. SAC 47,500 4. GSW 46,100 5. LAC 45,600 26. PHI 37,900 27. CHA 36,000 28. WAS 35,400 29. DET 35,000 30. TOR 34,900 — Alan Horton (@WolvesRadio) August 17, 2024

The Timberwolves have always been one of the most eastern-based franchises in the NBA's Western Conference, along with the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans. But while those teams play in a division with three nearby Texas teams, the Wolves are at least 800 miles away from every other team in the West.

If anything can be taken away from this, it's that the Wolves should be at the top of the list of teams to join the Eastern Conference if the NBA eventually expands with potential franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle. Their air travel would be cut down significantly if they were in the East with nearby teams like Milwaukee, Chicago, and Indiana.

Thoughts on the Timberwolves' 2024-25 schedule: Tough stretches, NBA cup, more

Hotel Manager Highgate Shifts Strategy Amid Uneven Business Travel Recovery

Sean O'Neill

Sean O'Neill , Skift

August 16th, 2024 at 4:50 PM EDT

The U.S. business travel recovery has been uneven. New York City? Thriving. San Francisco? Not so much. But the hotel manager giant Highgate sees signs for optimism.

Sean O'Neill

Highgate manages over 560 hotels with about 86,000 rooms, claiming to be the second-largest U.S. hotel management company after Marriott .

Most of the manager’s 86,000 rooms are select-service roadside and full-service urban properties. So Highgate can serve as something of a proxy for how the recovery in business travel is progressing, mirroring what its close rivals Marriott, Aimbridge Hospitality , and MCR Hotels are seeing.

Highgate also runs luxury properties: It bought lifestyle brand Viceroy Hotels & Resorts in late 2022, and expanded into Europe last year by acquiring a leisure portfolio of almost 3,000 rooms in Portugal.

Skift got an update on Highgate’s performance from Ankur Randev, chief commercial officer.

New York City Strength

Highgate says it’s the largest hotel operator in New York City, with about 35 hotels. Randev says the city’s business travel demand is in good shape.

“We see some gap in the volume, but it’s already at 95% of 2019 levels,” Randev said. “We expect a full recovery next year if not by the end of this year.”

San Francisco Weakness

San Francisco hotels are underperforming due to perceptions of a lack of safety, many workers in the tech industry only partly returning to offices, and convention losses to Las Vegas. But Randev said some of the “ground-level realities” that had been discouraging visitation to San Francisco are “improving on a daily basis.”

Hawaii’s Mixed Signals

Highgate has 19 hotels in Hawaii.

“The market has been impacted by the slow return of Japanese travelers, who historically made up about half of international visitors, because of the weakness of the yen to the dollar,” Randev said.

However, North American travelers have largely made up for the lack of Asian visitors in Hawaii.

Adjusting Sales Tactics

Highgate has recently been emphasizing account servicing and negotiations at the local level rather than talking at the regional level.

“We’ve realized that locally negotiated is key,” Randev said. If a company has a lot of its employees visiting a market, we definitely want to have one of our people talking to their local travel manager at all times.

“We continue to get business from the big spending corporates naturally through usual channels like travel management companies. But for all the other players, which make up a majority of business travel by company count, we’ve created a robust playbook on backyard, or local, servicing of accounts that’s really helped in conversion and penetration.”

Targeting “Lifetime Value”

Corporate travel budgets face a post-pandemic reckoning. With attendance at in-person events surging, companies must balance cost control and employee demand.

Highgate has been trying to court accounts with potentially the largest lifetime value rather than producing a series of one-off sales that may be quick wins.

Randev said the old strategy of simply negotiating lower hotel rates is outdated. Instead, firms will likely enforce stricter compliance policies to rein in spending. Highgate has been adjusting its sales tactics to respond to these shifting trends.

Corporate Interest in Sustainability

Travel managers at high-value corporate clients are increasingly interested in hunting for the lowest rates and volume discounts to ensure that employees comply with their policies.

Increased efforts to comply with sustainability targets have meant travel managers want data on the impact of carbon emissions that may be emitted from stays at particular hotels. Highgate’s vice president of sustainability works to ensure that the hotel manager can provide the necessary data so that its clients can stay in compliance with their carbon reduction goals, Randev said.

Optimism for 2025

Randev expressed confidence in Highgate’s ability to navigate potential market softening or recession due to its revenue management capabilities and commercial strategies.

The company has invested heavily in technology and in standardizing best practices across its portfolio since 2021, when Highgate appointed Arash Azarbarzin as CEO.

Shivraj takes out 20-km tiranga yatra in his constituency.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday took out a 20-km Tiranga Yatra from Ladkui to Bhaironda with more than 10,000 farmers from Ichhawar of Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency.

Chouhan addressed the public meeting after performing Bhoomi Pujan and inauguration of various development works in Bhaironda. Shivraj Singh also interacted with the students of CM Rise School and inaugurated a school bus. In Bhaironda, Laadli sisters celebrated Rakshabandhan by tying Rakhi on the wrist of their brother Shivraj and blessed him. During this, Chouhan said that there can be no relationship more sacred than the relationship of brother and sister in the world. I will continue to work day and night for the development and welfare of sisters till my last breath.

The Union Minister said that you have showered love, I have the same feeling in my heart that uncle is also an ocean of love, love for brothers, love for sisters and love for nephews and nieces. We are not ministers so that we get filled with arrogance by sitting on the post. We are in office so that we can serve you. My people are God for me.

Chouhan said that farming is the backbone of the economy and farmers are its soul, I love the soul more than my heart. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, we will leave no stone unturned in farmer welfare. Prime Minister has said from the ramparts of Red Fort that I will work three times harder to make India developed.

Chouhan said that I will also leave no stone unturned in agriculture, farmer welfare and rural development. It is our resolve to develop farming and villages.

Chouhan said that after Ladli Behna, our next destination is Lakhpati Didi Abhiyan. Every sister has to be included in the Lakhpati Club. Lakhpati Didi means the annual income of sisters should be more than 1 lakh rupees. Prime Minister Modi's resolve is to make 3 crore sisters lakhpatis.

He further said that on August 25, Prime Minister is going to Jalgaon in Maharashtra. A big program of Lakhpati Didis is being organized here. In which Prime Minister Modi will distribute Lakhpati certificates to 11 lakh sisters. Chouhan said that, by organizing a program for sisters, so many works have to be done through Ajeevika Mission that the income of sisters keeps increasing, sisters do not remain helpless, there are no tears in eyes, smiles come on faces and sons and daughters keep moving forward, this is the mission of my life.

Chouhan participated in the massive tree plantation program organized by Karunadham Ashram in Bhopal on Sunday and planted saplings. During this, Chouhan said that, when you do some work every day in life, it becomes a sadhana.

Any sacred work that is useful for others is a sadhana, it is a penance. Tree plantation is also a penance and today even the Prime Minister called for “one tree in the name of mother”, only then the earth will be saved and hence no other work can be more sacred than this. Tree plantation is a very sacred work, this earth is not only for ourselves but also for the coming generations. In the desire for material progress, we exploited it and that is why we are facing problems like climate change and global warming. That is why I felt that I will plant a tree every day. We release carbon dioxide and trees give us oxygen. So make arrangements for as much as we need to live.

The Union Minister on Sunday participated in the Tiranga Yatra here and interacted with the people. During his visit, people welcomed Shivraj in every village. Wherever Shivraj's convoy passed, sisters tied rakhi to Shivraj and blessed him. Youngsters showered flowers on him and elders blessed him by placing their hands on his head. Nephews and nieces expressed their happiness by hugging their uncle. During this, Chauhan said that such a flood of love of sisters surged in the village that I cannot describe it.

If You Can Do It, You Can Do It at Night

Travel adventures, from goat hikes to snorkeling, get even better when they’re done under the stars.

A full moon rises above a lake where its light is vividly reflected. The lake is surrounded by the darkened silhouettes of trees and grasses.

By Amy Thomas

Hiking and kayaking in the daytime? Fun and invigorating. But under a full moon, those activities can be transcendent. Gazing at blue skies is pleasant — but rather ordinary. Looking up at the night sky, on the other hand, feels as though deep mysteries may be revealed.

Astrotourism, travel devoted to stargazing and other celestial activities, is booming, spurred on, in part, by DarkSky International , which aims to protect the night skies from light pollution. The nonprofit organization, based in Tucson, Ariz., has designated 220 dark sky areas around the world since its grass-roots founding in 1988, and has recently started the DarkSky Approved Lodging program.

“Viewing our starry night sky has connected humanity throughout the ages and allowed us to form a deep connection with the cosmos,” said Susan Serven, DarkSky’s communications director. “Now it’s seen as a growing potential economic driver, as well.”

It could be the breathtaking photos captured by the Hubble telescope, the Northern Lights that dazzled farther south this spring , or our growing awareness of light pollution and its impact on migratory birds, nocturnal pollinators and other wildlife that has helped catalyze interest, but the night skies are sparking invitations to explore in new ways.

Here are five nocturnal adventures that will add a strong dose of awe to your next vacation.

Full-moon goat hike

Bradley Mountain Farm , in Southington, Conn., has been a dairy farm for two centuries. But it’s only in the past five years that the owner, Anneliese Dadras, brought goats and humans together under the full moon.

“I really wanted to show people all the wonderful things about goats,” Ms. Dadras said. In addition to activities like goat yoga, goat strolls and goat snuggles on her farm, Ms. Dadras offers full-moon goat hikes throughout the year on the hilly terrain surrounding her property ($25 for one hour). Anywhere from 10 to 20 people hike around the farm, each with a leashed goat. Though it’s called a hike, it’s more of a nocturnal ramble. “It’s more about the fun of it,” Ms. Dadras said.

The excursion, about a half mile, meanders along a forest trail, past a pasture where guests can see the rest of the herd, and eventually arrives at a large lake, where participants are rewarded with a view of the full moon bouncing off its surface. While Ms. Dadras acknowledges that it might sometimes feel a little spooky traversing the land in the dark, the goats bring a sense of playfulness. “People have so much fun with the goats, they say, ‘Oh I forgot it was about the moon.’”

Nighttime river float

Across the country, in Sunriver, Ore, Sunriver Resort , a 3,300-acre property situated within an international dark sky designated area , includes six miles of water frontage on the Deschutes River. This wide, flat body of water is where a full-moon river float takes guests for a 2.5-hour paddle in a kayak or canoe ($115 per person).

“Our skies are so dark at night that it makes stargazing and things like this just so impressive,” said the resort’s director of sales and marketing, Lindsay Borkowski. “And something people don’t normally see because of light pollution.”

Guests gather at the resort’s marina where they choose their watercraft and are then shuttled to the starting point, three miles upriver. Once everyone is settled in their single or double kayak or canoe, the float begins. Head lamps are offered, but the moon — with assistance from the stars — is meant to be the guiding light.

Five or six guides ensure safety and point out celestial spectacles overhead. “The night sky is really the focal point,” Ms. Borkowski said. “You’re going to see shooting stars on a clear night, and you’re going to see the Milky Way.”

Even though up to 30 people can join, the vibe remains reflective, the sound of paddles hitting the water adding to the serenity of the night sky. But when the float wraps up back at the marina, reflective shifts to festive as guests sip hot chocolate, basking in the glow of a fire pit and the moon above.

Stargazing with an astronomer

Dark skies are inherently beautiful, filled with glittering stars and dusty, spiraling galaxies. It’s spectacles like these that inspire people to journey to Sedona, Ariz., another designated dark sky community . It’s also why one of Enchantment Resort’s most popular programs is stargazing.

Twice a week, as a complimentary offering, an astronomer takes guests to the most remote and darkest corner of the property. They’ll set up two or three telescopes on tripods and focus them on deep space objects — planets, constellations, nebulas and galaxies.

Along with razor-sharp views through the instruments, Dennis Casper, the resort’s primary astronomer, offers astrophysical explanations of the objects participants are looking at. “Once the connection is made between the view and the description, true understanding is achieved, which makes the experience more poignant,” he said. Mr. Casper also has powerful binoculars that are capable of zooming in on moon craters, star clusters and even the Andromeda Galaxy, our galactic neighbor.

As epic as the experience is, it’s also casual. As Matt High, the resort’s director of adventures and activities said, “Guests can come for five minutes to get a quick look, or they can come for the entire two hours for a more in-depth experience to learn about the stars and universe.”

Night-sky photography workshops

It’s one thing to see the majesty of the cosmos. But to be able to take it home with you is also extraordinary. That’s the idea of the night sky photography classes offered at Keweenaw Mountain Lodge on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, yet another international dark sky designed area .

The rustic lodge is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts and those interested in exploring the night skies. “The people vary from those who have never used their camera much to people who are advanced enthusiasts,” said Nate Bett, the primary instructor of the workshops, which last about two and a half hours and cost $75.

Mr. Bett and other instructors cater to the level and interests of those in attendance, starting with a presentation on techniques and resources for capturing the night sky. They will then go out into the field to shoot side by side for about an hour.

“A lot of what we talk about at the beginning is just how to plan for these kinds of shots,” Mr. Bett said, underscoring the importance of technical know-how, including lens settings. He also shares tips for maximizing the artistic impact. “I do go into composition and how to not just capture the Milky Way, but how to make a photograph that is compelling and something people want to look at and get excited about.”

Night snorkeling

Many travelers book trips to the Caribbean with plans to snorkel through the sea’s clear waters. Travelers to Secret Bay , a secluded 22-villa resort on Dominica, might have the opportunity to see creatures that others don’t — by enjoying the experience at night.

Secret Bay’s boat captain, Don Mitchell, more popularly known as Captain Don, takes up to seven guests nightly ($275 a couple; weather permitting) to a location he has scoped out for optimal conditions.

If Mr. Mitchell is satisfied that he has found clean, clear waters, he brings guests out in the resort’s 28-foot Axopar boat for about 90 minutes. With diving lights in hand, everyone jumps in and explores. “It’s just the snorkelers, their flashlights, the darkness and the reef,” Mr. Mitchell said. In addition to creatures like lobsters, squid and octopus, guests may see the occasional barracuda or scorpion fish. No sharks have been encountered, though most every guest inevitably inquires about them, he said.

After about a half an hour of snorkeling, the show continues when Mr. Mitchell and the guests extinguish their lights and behold another spectacle: bioluminescence, tiny underwater plankton that, stirred up by the activity, create an ethereal blue glow, mimicking the cosmos above.

They serve as the basic building blocks of our wardrobes, enable us to easily dress an outfit up or down, and make packing stress-free. And since traveling can yield plenty of unexpected itinerary changes, having reliable basics on hand can help you concoct last-minute outfits with ease.

Ahead, shop our 11 favorite Amazon multipacks — from sports bras to lounge pants — that are all rated highly for their quality, design, function, and, of course, price, starting at just $17.

Sykooria Strappy Sports Bra 3-Pack

If you’re anything like me, most of your sports bras serve a specific purpose, whether it be maximum support for HIIT classes or minimal support for lounging at home. Sometimes, though, you just need an in-between sports bra, one that’s comfortable while providing a decent amount of support. This three-pack set of strappy sports bras fits the bill. Available in 26 different color combinations, these pull-on sports bras are made with a breathable nylon-spandex material and a smoothing longline band that one reviewer says “provides waist compression and light support.” Snag the set while it’s 10 percent off.

Amazon Essentials Camisole 4-Pack

Camisoles are the original wardrobe essential — worn alone or under a blouse for added modesty, camis serve a variety of roles when it comes to building an outfit. This four-pack from Amazon Essentials is a great last-minute purchase to bring along on work trips, family vacations, and journeys abroad. Made of a breathable and stretchy cotton-spandex blend, each cami comes with thin, adjustable elastic straps and a scoop neckline. With 24 different color combinations available, you can pick out the exact shades that fit your style.

At just $17 for a pack of four, these bike shorts from Sundwudu might just be the best deal on this list. Available 16 different color combinations, these high-waisted bike shorts have a thick and smooth elastic waistband and go up to a size 4X. Some reviewers happily report that they’re made of a “soft buttery material” and are the ultimate multipurpose short. If you’re looking for more colorful shade combinations, check out this similar style from Cadmus , available up to a 3X.

Kivdol Women's Lounge Pants 3-Pack

Pocket leggings are my favorite for long flights and daytime walking tours: They’re comfortable, breathable, and the pockets are usually large enough to fit my iPhone, keys, and wallet all at once. These Real Essentials pocket leggings fit the bill when it comes to function and comfort, touting ultra deep pockets on each thigh and a smoothing, ultra-wide waistband that won’t dig into your skin. Available in nine vibrant color combinations, this four-pack gets a gold star for having plus size options available, too.

Available in 10 different color combos, this set of basic t-shirts has gotten over 221,000 five-star reviews at Amazon, with multiple shoppers expressing that this tee was “exactly” what they were looking for.

White Peak Trading Company Zip-Up Hoodie 3-Pack

Hooded sweatshirts can be pricey; depending on the brand, you could end up spending upwards of $100 just for one. This three-pack of hoodies from White Peak Trading Company, however, only ring up at $38 — that comes out to less than $13 for each one. These unisex hoodies come in five different color combinations and feature a drawstring hood, a full zipper, deep pockets in the front, and fitted cuff links on the wrists. Plus, they’re carried up to a 3X, and, according to many of the reviews , they’re true to size.

Hue Women's Mini Crew Socks

Evercute workout tank tops 3-pack.

On long travel days where you just can’t bring yourself to wear a “real” bra, you can reach for one of these Evercute workout tank tops instead. Available in 12 different combinations, these workout tanks have a built-in bra with removable pads, providing comfortable support on long flights, hikes, and walks. They’re longer than a crop tank but shorter than a full-length cami, hitting right at the waist. Reviewers love the soft-but-stretchy material, with one reviewer writing “whether I'm lifting weights, doing cardio, or practicing yoga, these tanks stay in place and keep me comfortable throughout my entire workout.”

Meetsun Retro Oversized Aviator Sunglasses

You can never have too many back-up sunglasses when traveling. Having to hunt down a convenience store to buy another pair after you’d lost or broken your only pair is a frustrating scenario to be in. Thankfully, this three-pack of aviator sunglasses can prevent said scenario from happening. Perfectly oversized, these sunglasses have a classic 1970s-style aviator silhouette and offer UV400 protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Pick one (or two or three) of six available combos ahead of your next trip.

Xieerduo Long-Sleeved Crew Neck 3-Pack

If you’re visiting a chilly destination soon — or just want to get your wardrobe ready for fall — consider stocking up on basics you can layer up or down. This three-pack of Xieerduo long-sleeve crewnecks is made of a stretchy, breathable rayon-spandex blend, with one reviewer reporting that “they fit slim and capture your figure”, allowing you to seamlessly layer vests and jackets on top without adding bulk. These crewneck t-shirts, available in 15 color combinations, pair perfectly with wide-leg chinos at the office, sweatpants at the airport, or knee-high boots and a mini skirt for a girl’s night out.

Maharashtra Elections 2024: Disgruntled Congress MLA Zeeshan Siddique Joins Ajit Pawar's Yatra In Mumbai

Congress mla zeeshan siddique accompanied ajit pawar's jan sanman yatra in mumbai on monday. it is predicted that zeeshan, son of baba siddique is set to follow his father's footsteps of quitting the grand old congress party and joining ajit pawar-led ncp ahead of state assembly elections..

Ajit Pawar led the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Jan Sanman Yatra entered Mumbai on Monday. However, all eyes were on Congress MLA Zeeshan Siddique who joined the Ajit Pawar-led yatra in full zest, extending his full support. He welcomed the NCP chief and other leaders in his constituency. It is not unknown that Zeeshan is disgruntled in Congress, and is likely to follow his father's footsteps and join the NCP.

Zeeshan is a sitting Congress MLA from Bandra East constituency. However, lately, he has been open about the discrimination he is facing within the party.

It was in February this year, a long-term Congressman Baba Siddique exited the party and joined the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Siddique had indicated then that Zeeshan would be next to quit the grand old party.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Zeeshan said, "Ajit Pawar's Jan Sanman Yatra was about to start from my constituency (Bandra) and several women wanted to greet and thank him for the Ladli Bahin Yojana. Thus, we are giving him a grand welcome in Bandra."

Zeeshan also highlighted how he has been sidelined in Congress. "A couple of days ago there was a Congress rally here and I was not invited. Also, there was nomination form distribution in the Congress office, however, my supporters were refused the forms too. It is loud and clear what the party wants. It is now my decision from where to contest the election," he said speaking with NDTV Marathi news channel.

"Residents of Bandra East are aware of the discrimination we have been facing lately. I will follow what the people of my constituency say. I will fight elections from Bandra East itself and win," Zeeshan added hinting to contest from the NCP-Ajit Pawar faction.

As per reports, Ajit Pawar-led NCP is claiming Mumbai's Bandra, Sion, and Pratiksha Nagar constituencies in the seat-sharing for the upcoming state assembly elections.

Ukraine war latest: Third Russian bridge 'attacked' - as Putin 'in position he never dreamt in worst nightmares'

Russia says Ukraine has attacked a third bridge in the Kursk region - as an ex-UK foreign secretary says Kyiv has put Vladimir Putin "into a position he never dreamt in his worst nightmares". Listen to a Daily podcast on how Ukraine crossed the Russian president's "red line" as you scroll.

Lithuania has today started building a military base that will accommodate up to 4,000 German troops once it's completed by the end of 2027.

It will be the first permanent foreign deployment for the German military since the end of the Second World War.

Lithuania's chief of defence, Raimundas Vaiksnoras, estimated it would spend more than a billion euros building the base over the next three years.

Amid fears Russia could eventually decide to invade other neighbouring countries, Mr Vaiksnoras said it would give "reassurance to our population and as deterrence, to push the Russians out".

The base will be located near the capital Vilnius, which is about 150 miles from the Russian border and 12 miles from Belarus, a staunch supporter of the Kremlin.

German defence minister Boris Pistorius compared the posting of 4,000 troops to allied forces being stationed in West Germany during the Cold War - a move that was also designed to defend Europe in the case of a Soviet attack.

Russia says it is banning 32 experts and employees at British thinktanks.

Moscow has accused them of pushing an anti-Russian line in Western policy circles, Reuters reports.

People on the list of those banned, which has been published on the Russian foreign ministry's website, have also been accused of spreading disinformation designed to discredit Moscow.

We told you earlier that Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, was visiting Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine later this week.

We now have a little bit more detail on Mr Modi's visit to Kyiv, scheduled for 23 August.

The Ukrainian presidential office said on Telegram that the two leaders would discuss the countries' relations and multilateral cooperation.

"This is the first visit of the head of the Indian government to our country in the history of bilateral relations", the office added.

Ukraine claims to be making advances after launching a shock invasion into Russia's Kursk border region, in a move which has embarrassed Vladimir Putin's top military brass.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the latest developments.

Today, Jane in Shropshire asks:

What is success for Ukraine in their invasion into Russia?

Our  security and defence analyst Michael Clarke says:

This incursion is, by definition, a temporary military manoeuvre, designed to put pressure on Russian strategy and gain some military leverage.

It will end when the coming battle of Kursk has reached a point where Ukrainian forces judge that they can still leave the pocket without being too badly mauled by Russian forces, who will be trying to cut them off from their escape route back into Ukraine.

But that point may be some weeks away.

Success and failure will be an essentially political judgement: did Ukraine's Kursk offensive relieve Russian military pressure elsewhere - particularly in the Donbas around Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, Niu York and Pokrovsk, where Ukrainian forces are under real pressure? Did it increase support for Kyiv in the West? Did it affect the mood around Putin and the confidence in the Kremlin that they would win this war sooner or later?

Those will be the metrics by which this bold initiative will eventually be judged.

Sir Keir Starmer's spokesman says there has been "no change" in the UK's position on Ukraine using Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia's borders.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to use the missiles to attack targets deep inside Russia that could speed up the end of the war.

But Britain, along with other Western governments, have so far rebuffed Kyiv's requests amid fears of escalation.

Asked about Storm Shadow missiles and whether Ukraine is permitted to use them in Kursk as part of its push into Russia, a No 10 spokesman said: "We are providing military aid to support Ukraine's clear right to self-defence."

Asked about discussions between the UK and overseas partners, including the US and France, the spokesperson added: "We also have an ongoing dialogue with our allies about a co-ordinated effort between us all to do the same thing and be united in our support for Ukraine.

"So, more broadly, yes, there are conversations always happening between ourselves."

Civilians in Pokrosvk in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region have just a week or two to flee their homes as Russian troops make rapid gains, a Ukrainian official has said.

A key target city for Moscow, fighting around Pokrovsk remains the heaviest in eastern Ukraine.

Several clashes were reported in the area last week as Kyiv pushed on with its shock invasion of Russia's Kursk border region.

Serhiy Dobriak, the head of Pokrovsk's military administration, said residents should leave as quickly as they can.

They have "a week or two, no more", he told Radio Liberty's Ukrainian Service.

He said authorities have capacity to evacuate at least 1,000 people per day, but only around half that amount is currently leaving.

Some 53,000 people, including nearly 4,000 children, remain in the city.

More than 121,000 people have been evacuated from nine border districts in Kursk, Russian media is reporting, citing the country's emergencies ministry.

Ukrainian troops launched a cross-border invasion into the region nearly two weeks ago, in a move that shocked Vladimir Putin and his top military leaders and left them struggling to push Kyiv's forces back.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier that he was briefed by his top military commander that Ukraine was achieving its goals in Kursk.

Kyiv predicts Moscow will have around 200,000 extra forces in Ukraine by the end of the year, according to a report.

Forbes Ukraine cited deputy defence minister Ivan Havryliuk as saying some 800,000 Russian troops were expected in the country by the end of 2024.

Currently, there are around 600,000 soldiers in occupied areas of Ukraine, he said.

Analysts at the Royal United Services Institute say Russian forces have been expanding in size despite suffering heavy casualties, and the Kremlin believes it can sustain the "current rate of attrition" through 2025.

An adviser to Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russians must force Vladimir Putin to enter peace talks on "fair terms" if they don't want to see the war on their doorstep.

Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the president's office, claims that Mr Putin's own forces are "destroying civilian infrastructure" in the Kursk border region and "looting shops and civilian homes".

"Accustomed to seeing the war as a television show, Russians are now seeing it up close and personal," he said in a post to X.

"You can no longer turn away, we will not allow it.

"If you don't want to see the war, you have to end the war by forcing your 'leadership' to make peace on fair terms."

Kerala Tour Packages FAQs

Q. Which is the best backwater destination in Kerala? A. As you sort through Kerala tour packages, make sure it includes Kumarakom in your itinerary. Kumarakom is that dreamy backwater getaway that a typical picture-postcard from Kerala is made up of. An upmarket destination with its smattering of exclusive resorts fringing the backwaters with their personal jetties for you to make evening trips on the Vembanad Lake and catch a sunset. Kumarakom is serene with huge patches of water thick with water lilies. Sit out on the balcony of your resort and you will be able to spot fishermen with their nets hauling out the catch of the day or the locals going about their job in their wooden boats. Kumarakom is green, atmospheric and offers you a quietude that is unique to it. Q. Is a houseboat stay in Kerala expensive? A. Most Kerala holiday packages comprise a night’s stay in a houseboat. It could be availed as houseboats come in a range of budgets. The houseboats can be hired for a day trip, to catch a sunset, for spending a night or consecutive nights. The cost of a houseboat stay would depend on that. There are prominent hotel chains such as Taj that offer luxury houseboat stays panning over a few days where you would have your personal butler cooking you fresh meals as per your order and your houseboat would have a bedroom, bathroom, lobby, kitchen and sit-out and you can watch the backwater scenery through the day. Look out the window or sit on your deck and watch day turn into night, the colours of the changing sky and experience something you never would otherwise on a hotel stay. Q. What major international airlines operate to Kerala? A. Among European carriers there is Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Finn Air, Air France, Al Italia, Virgin Atlantic, Swiss Air, Austrian Airlines and Swiss Air. American carriers include Delta Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines. The Asian carriers include Emirates, SriLankan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Kuwait Airways, Oman Air, Malaysian Airlines, Gulf Air, and Qatar Airways. Q. What is the best season to visit Kerala? A. October to March is the best time to visit Kerala. At this time Kerala experiences a mild winter which means there is none of the humidity of the monsoons and no sweltering heat of the summer months. The daytime is bright and sunny, the skies are clear and mellow wind wafts in from the sea around sundown. This is the best time to drift on a houseboat in the backwaters of Kumakarom or Alleppey, soak up the sun on the Kovalam beach, take a jetty ride to the Jewish synagogue in Cochin, set out on a jungle safari in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or simply cool your heels off in Munnar. No better time to enjoy Kerala’s vivid scenery. Q. What is a good place in Kerala for leisure and Ayurveda? A. Varkala is the best choice as it ticks both the categories. It is a laid-back getaway with cliffs fronting a turbulent sea, a lineup of coconut groves, regular yoga session planned by the hotels and resorts, cafes serving the fresh catch of the day, afforded by the setting are several Ayurveda clinics and resorts that specialise in Ayurvedic therapies complete with their resident doctors and nutritionists. Q. Is Uber available in Kerala? A. Only three cities in Kerala have Uber; namely Trivandrum, Cochin and Thrissur. A typical intercity Uber trip is between Cochin to any part of Kerala. In such an arrangement, you need to pay the return kilometre rate like in a regular taxi. You can also book an Uber ride from Alleppey and Kottayam provided it is headed to Cochin alone. Q. Is it safe to stay in a houseboat? A. There are houseboats meant for a day trip and there are overnight houseboats. The latter can further be categorised into Deluxe, Premium and Luxury categories. Make sure you are booking a houseboat stay with a reputed provider or the houseboats belong to a prominent hotel chain. There will be a full crew attending to you and you won’t have any discomfort, save for the minor insects that creep up on-board. Make sure you have researched your provider well before zeroing on an overnight stay. Q. Is it okay to visit Kerala in the monsoon? A. July to September is the rainy season in Kerala when the state draws its shutters and goes indoors. The beaches are empty, the attractions are abandoned in this season, even the local shacks shut shop. If you at all have to visit in monsoon to see the backwaters in their rain-soaked glory, visit late September when the heavy rains have subsided. Q. What are the top places to shop for silk sarees in Kerala? A. Parthas Textiles outlet in Trivandrum, Pulimoottil Silks in Thrissur, Ethnic Weaves in Trivandrum, Seematti in Kottayam, Kalyan Sarees in Kannur, Kalyan Kendra in Kozhikode, Jayalakshmi Silks in Kochi, are among the popular hubs to buy a gorgeous Kerala silk saree. Q. What is a great honeymooning destination in Kerala? A. The backwaters of Kumarakom offer the perfect retreat to honeymooning couples. Add to it the presence of the mighty Vembanad Lake that makes the sunsets here more colourful and the scenery more dramatic. Munnar too is a cosy getaway for honeymooners, but nothing like the backwaters to enjoy a few days of serene country scenery with the soft gurgle of waters always in the background. Q. Is alcohol served aboard houseboats? A. Houseboats typically do not come with stocked bars as serving alcohol anywhere in Kerala requires a special liquor licence. But houseboats let you bring in your own alcohol; sometimes they even pick up beer locally and serve it to you. There is no law against enjoying your own alcohol on a houseboat. Q. Where does the Nehru Trophy Boat Race take place in Kerala? A. The fabled Nehru Trophy Boat Race or the snake boat race takes place on the Punnamada Lake near Alleppey. It happens annually in August on its second Saturday. The sight of watching more than 100 rowers navigate on their punted canoes through this approximately 2 kilometre stretch competing with each other as they make it to the finishing line, is a sight to behold.
