Gulf Shores, Alabama has one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the USA. Seriously. It’s a perfect destination for any beach-loving traveler , but an especially fun spot for families! Here’s a guide to the best things to do in Gulf Shores with kids.

But before I get into the full details, let’s talk about why you’ll love the Gulf Shores area!

Crisp, white sand meets the deep blues of the Gulf Coast. It’s a gorgeous landscape and friendly vacation destination. Maybe one of the best parts of Gulf Shores is that every bit of the town’s motto is true: “small town, big beach.”

Gulf Shores (and it’s neighboring Orange Beach ) hold a tiny sliver of the Gulf Coast, in comparison to how big the Gulf of Mexico is. But honestly…it just might be the best part of the coast.

Top Things to do in Gulf Shores with kids

1. beach day.

Okay when you first arrive in a gorgeous beachy spot like this, you’ll want to hit the beach right away. Check into your hotel or vacation rental (or don’t!) and hit the beach.

Get this: the Alabama Gulf Coast has 32 miles of gorgeous, white sand beaches! So pack your swim gear and enjoy these beautiful beaches!

2. Pink Pony Pub

If you hang out on the beach right off the main strip in Gulf Shores, you’ll likely be near the world-famous Pink Pony Pub. It has kid-friendly food and an incredible view of the beach from the deck.

After some beach time, you’ll likely be hungry and thirsty so this is a perfect stop to add to your beach day. My family really enjoyed the easy access to the beach, and the fresh seafood at Pink Pony Pub.

3. The Hangout Gulf Shores

If you’re looking for a bit more entertainment, then head straight down the beach to The Hangout. From good food to live music, a courtyard with free games and plenty of photo-ops , The Hangout is a fun stop in Gulf Shores!

Just a bit of important info for you as a parent: it can be known as a bit of a party spot, but it’s actually family-friendly too. I’d recommend this stop in the middle of the day if you’re traveling with younger kids.

4. Make a quick stop by the welcome center

I know what you’re thinking: what in the world is so great about the welcome center that you’d spend precious vacation time there?

Well, there’s a ton of reasons but I’ll give you 2 big ones: coupons and filters! Let me explain.

I’m going to guess you like to save money , right? Well hit up the welcome center real quick as you stroll into town to pick up some coupons and ask literally anything about your trip. They’re a wealth of knowledge over there!

Secondly, you’ll want this for later on in the list, but you need to get filters for your phone and flashlights at night for evening beach activities . The welcome center has them for free. More about sea turtles later. 😉

For these next few activities, we’re going to get really active! So whether you’ve just spent a long time in the car on a road trip with kids , or your kids are just high energy, let’s have some fun!

5. The Track Gulf Shores

This is the most fun I’ve had at a go-kart place since I was probably 14. And yes, I’ve been to others since then!

The Track Gulf Shores is a fun spot for all ages. There are a lot of driving and riding options with multiple tracks. From youth tracks to boats and of course, the giant 3-level elevated track.

My favorite was the 3-story go kart track. Racing others around the course, was fun, and speeding down the track at full speed was a rush. There were shrills of excitement the whole time. And then there were the kids’ giggles, too! 😉

The only downfall is The Track Gulf Shores is a bit pricey. So I’d recommend to set a budget and stick to it!

6. Bike the Backcountry Trails

Running through Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are 28 miles of trails just begging to be explored. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trails begin and end all over the area, and also run through the Gulf State Park .

So while you can definitely walk these trails, a better way to see them is by biking! In Orange Beach, there’s a family-friendly bike shop, Beach Bike Rentals , to rent bikes to explore the trails.

With options like tandem bikes for older kids, individual cruisers with kid pull-behind bikes to attach, and smaller bikes with training wheels, there’s plenty of options to choose from.

7. Miniature Golf

This is a perfect family bonding experience at Gulf Shores! While there are a few miniature golf courses to choose from, my kids really loved the theme at Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf.

The course was super interactive and we especially loved all the water features and the story of Blackbeard the pirate. Each hole was different and exciting, and my kids didn’t want the course to end!

Watching my son get not 1 but 2 hole-in-one’s was one of the highlights of our family trip to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama.

8. Jump for joy at a trampoline park

This is a perfect rainy day activity! It’s an great way to stay active during your vacation, and way more fun than watching a screen or playing video games. Take an hour or 2 to jump around at the trampoline park.

Jumping at a trampoline park is perfect for all ages and the giggles that come out of everyone will make you glad you went!

Okay, for this next section we’re actually heading to Orange Beach. It’s just a few minutes away and there’s so much to do!

9. The Wharf at Orange Beach

Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are so close together so if you’re staying in Gulf Shores, it’s easy just to pop on over to Orange Beach to check out the Wharf. I’d say The Wharf at Orange Beach is a top 5 must-do in the area .

The Wharf offers lots of shopping, dining and activities. It’s basically the place to go for entertainment in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area.

From arcades to movie theaters, tons of restaurants, live music and views of the bay. I love that it all has free parking, too!

10. SPECTRA light show

Okay, so if you’re at the Wharf at Orange Beach at night, you have to check out the SPECTRA laser light show on the main street at the Wharf. It’s kid-friendly and entertaining for adults, too.

The lights on the palm trees and buildings dance to the music. Fog machines enhance the light effects and the surround-sound music captivates everyone in the area to watch. It’s a fun, free activity on this list of things to do in Gulf Shores with kids.

My kids loved this experience and would go back in a heartbeat! The show starts every 30 minutes in the evening at dark. Check the SPECTRA light show times here .

11. Ride the Ferris wheel

If you’re looking for entertainment for kids and adults, then the Wharf’s Ferris wheel has got to be on your list of things to do in Gulf Shores with kids. This Ferris wheel is one of the largest in the Southeastern USA !

Check the hours before you go as the summer hours are extended into the evening. But you’ll get the best views if you go in the daylight, as you can see a ton from the top of the wheel.

If you do go at night, watch the Ferris wheel light up, and even become part of the SPECTRA light show!

12. Go ziplining

Alright, before you leave the Wharf at Orange Beach, you’ve got to go ziplining! This high-adventure activity isn’t for the faint of heart, though. It’s 8 ziplines and covers 6,000+ feet of flying through the air!

Just a public service announcement if you’ve never been ziplining: it really just feels like sliding down a huge slide. But faster and with better views!

Pro tip: this activity is for families with kids ages 10+ and each person must weigh 70-250 pounds.

I mean, you’re going to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach for the beautiful beaches and turquoise water. Here’s a few of my favorite activities with water.

13. Dolphin cruising

If you have animal-lovers or adventure-seekers in your family, a must-do is a dolphin cruise ! Going out into the bright teal waters of the Gulf Coast is a magnificent experience, only to be topped by seeing a pod of dolphins!

This might just be the most fun you’ll have in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach , so be sure to put it on your vacation budget ! It’s a memory your family will not forget!

Pro tip: book your dolphin cruise in advance as they tend to sell out early!

14. Duck boat tour

See the area and soak in some history with a duck boat tour . This unique land-and-sea vehicle is a restored WWII vessel. The amphibious touring vehicles were first used in Normandy, France on D-Day.

Now it’s used as an open-air touring vehicle, alternating from land and water to see the beautiful coastline of Orange Beach. What a fun and unique experience!

Just a quick note: these tours run only from Memorial Day to Labor Day. If you want in, book your duck tour early as they tend to sell out.

15. Take a sand castle building class

Wanna know how to build an amazing sand castle? Well there’s a class for that! Your family can work together to build a sand castle, complete with the best tips and know-how so you can always build amazing creations.

Building a sandcastle is a unique bonding experience and can be done right on the public beach at Gulf Shores or Orange Beach. The class is for all ages and skill levels, and they bring all the tools!

My experience with the pros at Sand Castle University was top notch – I’d highly recommend them!

16. Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

Also known as ‘the little zoo that could,’ the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is a fun family spot in Gulf shores . If you’re looking for a break from the beach and water activities, or even on a slightly rainy day, it’s time to hit the zoo!

I loved that the zoo was tucked away from the traffic and community noise, right next to a nature preserve. It’s almost like it’s own little oasis – even though it’s just a few miles from the Gulf!

The zoo does a great job with interactive exhibits, including giraffe feedings, encounters with lemurs, kangaroos and more. Be sure to check the zoo’s website for hours, animal feedings and encounters before you go to maximize your experience!

17. Lulu’s Gulf Shores

Going to Lulu’s is an adventure! You could just go for the restaurant, but with tons of entertainment you’ll get so much more . And bonus – it’s a family place so you won’t have to worry about what your kids will eat, see or hear at Lulu’s.

A rope course, outdoor bar, beach arcade, live music… the list goes on! Lulu’s is owned by Lucy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett’s sister, so you know it’s good!

Pro tip: put this one in your vacation budget as it’s a splurge. It’s seriously one of my favorite things to do in Gulf Shores with kids, so totally worth it!

18. Hunt for sand crabs and baby sea turtles

I asked my kids what their favorite part of our trip to Gulf Shores was, and my daughter said hunting sand crabs. I wasn’t surprised by this as it was such a fun activity!

The most important thing about this activity is to get red filter stickers for your cell phone or flashlights! Grab some for free at the Gulf Shores Welcome Center.

When baby sea turtles hatch, they look for the moonlight to lead them to the ocean. Unfortunately, if people are using regular flashlights they follow artificial light instead.

Sand crabs on the other hand are tan, almost translucent crabs that come out at night. They’re about the size of a quarter or half dollar, and scurry fast along the sand.

Pack a net with you on your trip to catch and release them! They are easy to find on the beach (away from the water).

Pro tip: wear water shoes for this activity. Jellyfish wash up on shore at night and it’s easy to get stung considering the only light you’ll have to see are flashlights.

19. The Yard

The Yard is one of those Instagram-worthy spots and a unique (and delicious) experience for everyone in your family.

It’s fun to pick out the unique flavors of ice cream with oversized toppings. With creations like The Mermaid , Peanut Butter Brownie Bliss and The Cereal Killer , you really can’t go wrong!

Be warned though – it’s sweetness overload, so sharing is encouraged!

20. Gulf State Park

If you love to be outdoors, you probably already know that state parks are awesome. But honestly, Gulf State Park is one of the best I’ve ever been to!

21. State Park Pier

Walking to the end of a pier along a beautiful beach can provide breathtaking views. It’s a unique way to see the beach and coastline from a different perspective.

Well the Gulf Coast State Park Pier is no exception! It’s an impressive pier that offers stunning views of the white sand beaches of Alabama’s coastline.

The pier is also the perfect spot for fishing. Your family can rent all the supplies needed for a few hours (or more) of fishing through the pier.

Recently renovated, there is a small charge to visit the pier, but for just a few bucks it’s worth the visit. For pier hours and costs, visit the website here .

For the budget minded and fun in the sun Gulf Shores has to be my most favorite all time beach vacation getaway. Whether it’s for long stay or mini girls weekend trip there’s always something to see and do. The locals are very accommodating and welcoming. It’s a place that doesn’t get enough recognition.

When you visit Los Angeles with kids you are going to want to check out the beaches, theme parks and museums. If you are like us and enjoy outdoor activities be sure to hike up behind the Hollywood sign too! Here are our top 33 things to do in Los Angeles with kids.

Things To Do In LA With Kids

1 – hollywood sign.

You can’t get much more iconic then the Hollywood Sign! And hiking to the Hollywood sign is a great way to see it and to get a view of all of LA. You won’t be able to touch the sign but you can hike right up behind it.

Take note this is a long hike – probably about 3 mile – 4 mile round trip hike from the Lake Hollywood park (where there is free public parking) and a lot of it is uphill. It isn’t easy, but our 6 year old did it with just being carried on our back a couple of times.

It is also very confusing. Some people were telling us you can’t hike up there and then we would see others that said you could . . . we kind of just kept following the signs and the people and we ended up going the right way. And no, we did not go in any of the no trespassing areas!

Once at the top you get an amazing view of LA with the Hollywood sign right below you. Also on the way up you get some pretty amazing views of the sign.

We talk with the kids about how when we see the sign in movies and TV shows now we can be like, “Hey, we have been there!”

Map to Hollywood Hills

We followed the map on this post . And parked at Lake Hollywood Park and then walked up the Mt. Lee route – you do end up walking on a road as you are going up – but that is the right way to go. It is a service road and we did see service vehicles so be aware of that. We also walked through a neighborhood to get to the road. It was an interesting trail but it was all good and we just kept asking people who were walking towards us if we were going the right way.

There is also an option to do a Horseback Ride on the Hollywood Trail where you can see the sign.

2 – Walk of Fame

Is a visit to LA complete without doing the Hollywood Walk of Fame and seeing the Chinese Theatre?! Probably not, but in my opinion it is a little disappointing. I mean sure you can see the stars and see some handprints at the Chinese Theatre but I don’t know, I think I expected more.

This is also located in a busy part of the city so you have people selling you things up and down the street and lots of activity going on. If you like that vibe, you may love it here!

3 – Venice Beach

If you are looking for a unique experience than Venice Beach is the place for you. There is a nice sized walkway that takes you from the Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach so we opted to park right in the middle in a large parking lot – you do have to pay for it.

Then we tried to get the kids skateboards out so that they could ride down the walkway, but it didn’t work out . . . they are still learning to skateboard and the walkway was super busy and lots of people had the motorized scooters so it didn’t feel very safe to have the kids on their boards.

We opted to put the boards back and instead choose to go on the walking path where we walked along the beach and into Venice beach. The Venice beach boardwalk is filled with shops and has a pretty constant smell of weed . . . it is legal in CA and is sold right on the boardwalk.

We then headed over to the skate park to check that out and we could have stayed for hours watching the skaters. Right behind us the roller bladders were working it with a group rollerblade dance session so that was interesting to watch too!

Next was Muscle Beach – it was much smaller than we anticipated but was still cool to see. There are also a ton of really cool contemporary art murals painted on the walls and people watching is top notch!

4 – Santa Monica Pier

We have heard a lot of really good things about the Pier but have never made it there ourselves. It was super busy the day we were there – but it is definitely on our list of places to check out next time we are in the area. With the ferris wheel and ice cream options I know our kids would love it! You can read more about the Santa Monica Pier here .

5 – Malibu

After the craziness of Venice Beach we were looking for something a little quieter so we headed out to Malibu to see what that was all about and to find a beach to let the kids run on.

We ended up at El Pescador State Beach in Malibu which was a beautiful state park with a beach and was a really nice introduction into what the Pacific Ocean and California coast would look like as we made our way north.

6 – Natural History Museum Of Los Angeles

Carson (our oldest) is really into Dinosaurs so we made a stop at the Natural History Museum. With our reciprocal museum membership  we were able to get in for free. And we spent a couple hours exploring the dinosaur bones and a few others things at the museum.

It is a good size museum and well worth a stop if your crew is into natural history and/or Dinosaurs!

7 – Kidspace Museum

This kid friendly museum is out in Pasadena so may be a bit of a drive but it was an awesome museum – we easily could have spent all day here. We again used our reciprocal museum membership and were able to get 4 tickets covered.

The children’s museum is almost all outside with great hands on activities for the kids to do. It is a perfect fit for kids age 11/12 and under. Well worth a visit if the kids need a day to run around and play.

8 – California Science Center

We had also heard great things about the California Adventure Center and definitely would have gone but we ran out of time! Note that the museum usually closes at 5pm . . . At the museum you can check out the Space Shuttle Endeavor Exhibition which looks amazing.

We had asked our followers for recommendations on things to do in LA with kids but we ran out of time and couldn’t do all of them. But we wanted to share the list with you in case you have more time to explore the area:

9 – LA Train Station

Great for anyone that loves trains and when you are done you can walk across the street to grab lunch at Philippe the Original Beef Dips!

10 – The Farmers Market at the Grove

We heard this one over and over again from people and sounded like a really unique and fun place to visit.

11 – Griffith Observatory and Park

We could see the observatory when we did the Hollywood Sign hike and I was disappointed we didn’t make it there. Would have loved to go at night and to see the Samuel Oschin Planetarium.

There is also the beautiful Griffith Park that you can explore and you won’t want to miss Travel Town ! Griffith Park is a great place for kid activities, Los Angeles has a lot to offer on that front! You can visit the LA Zoo, take Pony Rides or Train Rides and so much more!

12 – El Capitan Theater

A great place to see a movie! Plus it is gorgeous inside.

13 – The Los Angeles Public Library

Beautiful inside and lots of great events and activities going on.

14 – La Brea Tar Pits

Which I was disappointed we didn’t do but the location didn’t really work with the other things we did.

15 – WB Studios Tour

I looked into this one and it was pricey and there was an age restriction – everyone is suppose to be 8 years old or older. If the shows would have been ones the kids watched we probably would have done it but they weren’t.

17 – Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood is a perfect attraction to add to your list of things to do in Los Angeles. Especially if you are Harry Potter fans!

We had just done Universal in Orlando earlier in the year so we opted to skip Universal Studios Hollywood theme park this time around and did Walt Disneyland instead. My parents and sister’s family went to Universal and they enjoyed it. But we were surprised to hear it closed super early at 6pm . . . so be sure to check the times. 18 – Puppet Show

Looking for a unique experience? Check out a Puppet Show in downtown LA like the Bob Baker Marionette Theater.

19 – San Pedro

Check out this historic downtown waterfront where you can shop, dine, visit an art gallery or just walk around. You can also stop to see the USS Iowa in this area.

20 – Skirball Cultural Center

This Cultural Center has so much to offer! They offer events including weekly story times, guided tours, and a mini Noah’s Ark! Food, drinks and snacks are also available while you take in all the Center has to offer. This would be a great place for kids birthday parties! If you are interested in checking out museums, you may also want to go to the Autry Museum or the Getty Center !

21 – Grand Central Market

If you are a foodie, you must check out Grand Central Market! So many different food vendors and options to choose from.

22 – Take Flight

Walk the streets and window shop, check out the farmers market, see what events are going on. If your kids or you are into it then sit and people walk looking for celebrities!

26 – Hollywood Forever Cemetery

A cemetery is a weird thing to have on the list. But it is a world famous landmark in Los Angeles and know for its events. Be sure to check out the open air events happening during your visit!

27 – Echo Park

Check out the mural, the time travel mart for interesting finds, shop at the cookbook or rent a pedal boat for the lake. Lots of fun things to do here!

28 – Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Garden.

Yes it is a library but it is beautiful! Plus they have a botanical garden.

29 – Splash Pads

There are quite a few in the Los Angeles county area! If your kids are into this it is worth finding one close by and making a stop.

30 – Exposition Park

There is a lot to do in this urban park. It is home to a variety of museums including the California Science Museum and Natural History Museum.

Hey guys, Enjoy your content, I often find it relevant with the info I need. I’m from Australia and have been following you on SM for a while now – wexploretravel. We – family of 4, will be heading to LA in March 2019 and had most of your list on our list, most but not all. We are gravitating towards the coast, Santa Monica, Venice Beach & Malibu however do want to see Hollywood & Downtown. Being so spread out as LA is my question to you is regarding advice on accommodation. Would you split the stay into two say Downtown including Hollywood then move and spend time on coast? Can you recommend any family friendly accommodation that won’t require my kidneys to pay? Thanks again guys, much appreciation in advance. Regards – Will

Hi Will, sorry for the late reply. I’m sure you have accommodations set by now, but staying downtown for a few days will allow easier access to see the city – hopefully avoiding as much traffic as possible. We stayed in Acton, CA, which is a good 40 minute drive from downtown. We were in our RV at a campground so I can’t really say of an affordable hotel. However, you do have 2 kidneys, right?? I’m sure you could get by with just 1. lol, have a great trip!

The Colorado Railroad Museum  has the state's largest collection of locomotives, cars, photos and historic railroad mementos. Located in Golden, the museum is circled by a half-mile track, which allows them to do monthly "steam ups" with operating locomotives. On alternate weekends, the museum also runs the Galloping Goose , a rare bus mounted on train wheels that used to take passengers over Lizard Head Pass near Telluride.

We recomend beelining for the two 45-foot slides at the Billy Johnson Playground, Pilgrim Hill for the ultimate sledding in winter, and the outdoor movies and performances are just magical, so don't miss one if the timing is right.

If you start on the Manhattan side, you’ll wind up in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Your family will fall back in love with the city from a one-of-a-kind vantage point. Enter at Cadman Plaza East near Prospect St, Dumbo, Brooklyn or at Centre St just south of Chambers St in Manhattan.

The best view in New York is from the middle of the East River. There's nothing quite like sitting on the upper deck of a NYC Ferry as it cruises under the Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. There are eight routes to choose from, including Rockaway and Governors Island, plus Colney Island and St George. It's always more fun to get where you're going when you're on a boat.

A massive renovation in 2011 not only made the exhibits at this UWS institution more interactive, but introduced city kids to the DiMenna Children’s History Museum. Occupying 4,000 square feet on the Historical Society’s lower level, the space is the ideal spot for young history buffs to bone up on knowledge about their city through hands-on exhibits and more family programs than we can count. The permanent collection at the N-YHS—much of which is on view in the open-storage galleries on the fourth floor—offers kids a glimpse into quotidian urban living, with items like vintage toys.

Ah Coney Island, home of the Mermaid Parade and the original Nathan's. If those aren't two very worthy reasons to visit, we don't know what are. Well alright, actually there's also the famously old wooden roller coaster, Cyclone, at Luna park, rivalled by flashy new(er) thrill-ride Atlantic Aviator, plus the oldest continually operating aquarium in the country, as well as the iconic Wonder Wheel at Deno's, a bustling boardwalk and the beach, obvs. Not bad for a site that was once partially a bunch of landfill.

25.  Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Flushing Meadows Corona Park is a world all its own, or more accurately, the  Unisphere is — its enduring icon, the mammoth steel globe created for the 1964 World’s Fair. But there’s also first-rate culture and sports at the New York Hall of Science, Arthur Ashe Stadium, Queens Museum of Art and Citi Field. The rolling green fields also encompass a zoo, carousel, boating lake, skate park, barbecue area, playfields and an aquatic and hockey center. The area's Playground for All Children, built in 1984, was designed to accommodate children with and without disabilities—the first of its kind in the country.

26.  New York Botanical Garden

New York Botanical Garden is a feast for the eyes with gorgeous blooms that are bound to inspire any urban gardener. Though it might seem like a summertime excursion, the garden’s annual events such as Boo at the Zoo and the Holiday Train Show make the Bronx attraction a must during the colder months. (Without question it’s a happening spot for the holidays.) Naturally, you’ll want to stick around when spring arrives, as the Orchid Show is one of the most highly-anticipated events in all of NYC. Kids will love getting their hands dirty at the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden and the Edible Academy, which provides a chance for little naturalists to experience nature in the midst of NYC.

27.  Yankee Stadium

Take 'em out to the ball game! In addition to housing its namesake team, Yankee Stadium also hosts kid-friendly activities and themed events for families. Soak up the team's history in the museum—signed balls, old jerseys—and enjoy the game as your new favorite players score home runs. Oh! And it'd be wise to get a few snacks while you're visiting. Venture out to Governors Island (open May through October), where there’s plenty to see, do and enjoy as a family. Grab a ferry from Manhattan or Brooklyn to explore 172 acres via bike (there’s more than five miles of bike lanes and rentals are easily found at Blazing Saddles, Colonels Row), or head to spots like the Hammock Grove to kick back and relax in one of 50 hammocks or climb around on a nearby play structure. The Hills of Governors Island opened in 2016, and offers heights of 70 ft. above sea level (there are stunning views to be seen!) plus four huge slides, including the longest slide in NYC. Hungry? There are plenty of food trucks located on the island so you can snack, but we’d recommend bringing a picnic just for the experience.

When it was founded in 1899, Brooklyn Children’s Museum was the country’s first museum specifically made for children (no surprise that Kings County started the trend). Today it’s one of the most comprehensive kids’ attractions with a huge permanent collection, including musical instruments, masks, dolls, fossils and even a green building design. Originally built for the 1964 World’s Fair, the Queens institution demystifies its subject through colorful hands-on permanent exhibits such as “Connected Worlds" or "Happiness Experiment". In the summer, children can burn off excess energy—and learn a thing or two—in the outdoor science playground or play a game of minigolf beneath the shadow of two retired NASA rockets. And i n non-pandemic times NYSCI also offers sleepovers on select dates, so start packing those overnight bags!

31.  South Street Seaport

During Hurricane Sandy, much of South Street Seaport was destroyed, but it made a strong comeback with the reopening of South Street Seaport Museum, five historic ships to check out at Pier 16 and plenty of local restaurants and shops for snacking and browsing. Be sure to make a visit during the winter, now that it’s turned into a holiday hotspot with an ice rink and other fun seasonal amenities.

32.  Children’s Museum of Manhattan

Worried the Met or Guggenheim might be a wee bit too advanced for your pint-sized Picasso? Then let your kid’s creativity run wild in an institution strictly devoted to budding artists. The Children’s Museum of Manhattan houses five floors of fun for families, including interactive exhibits, workshop space and birthday party fun. Little patrons will learn about a wide variety of subjects, such as nutrition and dance, try their hand at craft projects, enjoy a fun storytime with friends and so much more.

33.  American Girl Place

• Toys and games

American Girl’s Rockefeller retail space is every little lady's dream. The 40,000-foot shop spans two levels and offers some pretty amazing features, including a salon where kids can get a hair cut at the same time as their favorite doll. A signature studio allows kids to personalize dolls with their own designs and a media studio hosts instructional classes as well as health and wellness activities. If your kids are complete fans of American Girl, then why not host their next birthday party here? The shop offers private party rooms with themed packages, projection equipment and other features that'll make your child’s next event the talk of the playground. 

34.  Bryant Park

Situated behind the New York Public Library is Bryant Park, a well-cultivated retreat that hosts a dizzying schedule of free entertainment during the summer, including the popular Monday night outdoor movies. The park hosts weekly kid-friendly programming such as storytime in the Reading Room and game socials in the 40th Street Plaza. Little ones with an interest in the circus can get a free lesson from the Bryant Park Jugglers on the Lawn or Upper Terrace. Families can take a spin on the Le Carrousel which features 14 different animals to ride on. In the winter the park transforms into a wonderland where you can find an ice skating rink and pop-up shops for the holidays. 

35.  FAO Schwarz

FAO is 30 Rock's beloved toy store and its endless stacks of empty red shopping bags aren't going to fill themselves! From stuffed animals and board games to dolls and STEM products, the selection is nothing short of generous. All interests will find something that strikes their fancy, but perhaps what's so lovable about the store is the extra step it takes to make the experience interactive. Not only will kiddies be able to find a furry friend or snag a new model, but they'll be able to enjoy hands-on activities (some of which are free) that'll spark a bit of imagination and playfulness. Look out for magic tricks, science experiments, spa treatments and, of course, don't forget to play the big ol' piano dance mat.

36.  New York Transit Museum

You don't need to be a trainspotter to enjoy the New York transit Museum. This place will delight norms and nerds alike as soon as they step into the building––an abandoned subway station in Downtown Brooklyn. Set foot on actual old school carriages, discover how the transport system you use every day has evolved over the past century, and marvel at the different design eras of tickets, maps and subway cars. If you're going in winter, check to see if the Holiday Train Show is on.

37.  Museum of the Moving Image

After a rendezvous through this renovated Queens hotspot, you’ll feel good about your kids’ screen time. The cinema and gallery hosts work that'll appeal to techies and film buffs alike. 38.  Brooklyn Public Library, Central Branch

• Prospect Heights

With its grandiose 50-foot-high concave entry looking out at the iconic Grand Army Plaza arch, this library’s Central branch is even grander on the inside. Little ones will enjoy weekly storytimes and morning programs in a cozy kids-only area (complete with stroller parking), while older techies can hang out in the computer loft for a variety of activities. After catching a live reading or talk, grab a bagel at Emma's Torch, the in-house cafe.

39.  Prospect Park

After Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux unveiled Central Park in 1859, they turned their attention south to create this bucolic Brooklyn destination. There’s plenty of room in Long Meadow and the Nethermead to have a family picnic on a patch of grass, while the Ravine, a towering indigenous forest, offers a woodland respite unparalleled in the borough. In the park’s children’s corner, kids can ride a super-fast carousel, visit with animals at the zoo and compete in sack races at the 18th-century Lefferts House. At the zoo’s Discovery Center, families can read nature books together and explore wildlife using a magnifying glass.

40.  New Victory Theater

You have to push through the solid wall of humanity crowding 42nd Street to get to the New Vic, but what’s inside is well worth the effort. This gem of a theater was built in 1900 by Oscar Hammerstein and became one of the finest showcases for children’s theater in New York. Each season brings a full slate of wondrous acts from around the world: Chinese circuses, Shakespearean comedies, French puppets and acrobats. The artists often lead families in workshops before the show, and happily meet the audience and sign programs afterward. Best of all, tickets cost a fraction of what you’d pay for other shows down the block.

41.  Historic Richmond Town

• Staten Island

Hop aboard the ferry to Staten Island for this time-traveling day trip. The Town— also known as the Staten Island Historical Society as of 1856—invites you to relive the history of the borough through a variety of family-friendly activities. From old-fashioned county fairs and homestyle breakfasts to seasonal pumpkin picking and evening candlelight tours, there’s something for everyone. Wander through four different sites (think: one massive museum) to catch costumed farmers and various handmakers, plus stop by Toys! to see what tots were playing with way back in the 19th century.

42.  Chelsea Piers

Whether the family fancies a spot of bowling, climbing, golfing, trampolining, er parkour-ing or myriad other activities we don't have the time to list––Chelsea Piers is the place to go. From toddlers upwards, there's something for everyone to enjoy and it's a sure-fire guarantee that your rugrats will leave thoroughly exercised and, fingers crossed, exhausted.

43.  Museum of Mathematics (MoMath)

Rather than being a place to learn math, the museum near Madison Square Park is a place to realize all the remarkable things math can be used to create. Its 30-plus interactive exhibits include the Wall of Fire Theorem, a laser “wall” showing you that cross sections aren’t always what you think they are; Math Square, a Jumbotron on the floor that connects each person standing on it by the shortest path possible, changing the moment anyone moves; and a studio where kids can create a 3D design on a screen, for a chance to have it made into an actual sculpture via a 3D printer. Most vital of all is that the museum appeals to kids’ sense of fun, their innate curiosity about the world around them and their penchant for discovery.

13 best family attractions in the US

When planning vacations for my own family, I'm always looking for destinations that infuse a dose of science, nature or history into our itinerary.

At first glance, a visit to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis may appeal to my kids because they get a 630-foot-high view of the city and its teeny, tiny inhabitants. However, they can also get an education in American history and architecture.

They would no doubt "ooh" and "ahh" over seeing a real volcano eruption at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but there are also opportunities to learn about this incredibly biodiverse region of the country and the native peoples who have resided here for centuries.

Below are 13 such family attractions that, together, make up TPG's ultimate list of U.S. spots to visit with your kids.

Statue of Liberty

If you've only ever seen the Statue of Liberty from one of New York City 's nearby boroughs or in a history book, it's high time you saw it up close and personal by visiting this important national monument in person.

To do that, you'll need to book a ferry tour through Statue City Cruises , which grants access to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the largest gateway for millions of immigrants who traveled to America between 1892 and 1954. Cruises leave from both Battery Park in Manhattan and Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Access to the top of the Statue of Liberty is currently unavailable. The highest you can climb is 10 stories (or 215 steps) to the top of the pedestal just below the statue's feet. The rest of the grounds are also open to the public, including the interactive Statue of Liberty Museum where you can view the original torch held by Lady Liberty.

National Mall

The National Mall in Washington, D.C. is often referred to as "America's front yard." With 18 acres of perfectly-manicured grass spanning from the United States Capitol to the Potomac River, it's certainly one of the largest front yards in America.

Surrounding the lawn are memorials and monuments that honor some of the most important events and influential figures in our country's history. From Martin Luther King, Jr. to World War II, each memorial and monument is as impactful as it is educational.

The National Mall is open 24 hours a day (rangers are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.) and there's no fee to visit. You can also participate in free weekly ranger-led programs or enhance your visit (and your view) by purchasing a ticket for the Washington Memorial observation deck or the Tidal Basin paddle boats .

Gateway Arch

St. Louis is known as the "Gateway to the West" and the Gateway Arch — in all its 630-foot-tall glory — was erected as a symbol of that notion.

There are various ways to experience the Gateway Arch and the surrounding area. The tram ride to the top of the arch takes visitors to an observation deck inside the arch with windows that look down on the city and the Mississippi River. Both the tram and the observation deck can feel cramped, something to keep in mind if you are not a fan of close quarters.

There is no fee to visit the Museum Under the Gateway Arch, though you may want to purchase a ticket to see the award-winning film "Monument to the Dream" that documents the arch's construction. The museum features interactive exhibits dedicated to St. Louis' role in our country's westward expansion and the building of the Gateway Arch.

Make it a full day by taking a scenic one-hour riverboat cruise along the banks of the Mississippi. You'll get views of the arch and the St. Louis skyline and, depending on which cruise you book, maybe even dinner and live music to go along with it.

You can purchase tram, documentary and riverboat tickets individually, but you will save by purchasing combo tickets .

Field Museum

The Field Museum in Chicago is easily one of the world's premier natural history museums. Permanent exhibitions span nearly the entirety of the Earth's history, from Native American and Indigenous communities to ancient Egyptian artifacts and even more ancient dinosaur fossils.

Probably the most well-known of those dinosaurs is a nearly-complete, 40-foot-long T.Rex skeleton called SUE (named for Sue Hendrickson who discovered the fossil).

Families with younger kids will want to spend time in the Crown Family Playlab, an interactive play area that's fun and educational. Kids can dig for dinosaur bones, explore a pueblo home and play musical instruments from across the globe.

Peruse the exhibits online before your visit to find your favorites because there's probably more than you can see in one day. There is an on-site cafe (with a full bar, if that interests you) where you can replenish your energy mid-day before tackling the rest of the exhibits on your list.

Most exhibits are included in museum admission, but a few require a separate ticket, including 3D movies and temporary exhibits.

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a quintessential stop on any "Great American West" family adventure. It's nearly 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and 1 mile deep, and the breadth of family-friendly activities at the Grand Canyon is nearly as large as the canyon itself.

If you have younger kids, you'll probably want to spend the majority of your time at the South Rim of the canyon. There you can explore the historic Grand Canyon Village, hike the paved Rim Trail and pick up a Junior Ranger activity book at the visitor center.

Families with older kids may choose to hike down into the canyon or reserve a mule to do the walking for you. Both are available at the North and South Rim. However, keep in mind the North Rim has fewer accommodations and is only open seasonally.

Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center on Florida's Space Coast is a must-do for space-obsessed kids (and adults, of course). The visitor complex is divided into six "mission zones," with each zone concentrating on various time periods in space exploration.

You can view relics from well-known NASA space missions and learn about the past, present and future of the NASA space program through interactive exhibits and simulators. If you have the flexibility to do so, time your visit around a shuttle launch or astronaut Q&A experience .

Purchase one- or two-day date-based tickets online prior to your visit.

USS Midway Museum

Even if you tell your kids ahead of time that you're visiting San Diego's USS Midway Museum, we suggest leaving out the part about how the museum is actually located inside the eponymous decommissioned aircraft carrier.

Now docked at Navy Pier in downtown San Diego, the museum comprises more than 30 restored aircraft and interactive exhibits that give kids a peek into life on board an aircraft carrier.

When you arrive, stop by the information booth to pick up a Junior Pilot activity sheet and help your kids earn their wings during your visit.

Outside the museum, you can see a 25-foot-tall statue of a World War II soldier kissing a nurse that recreates the 1945 photograph "V-J day in Times Square." Exhibits are located above and below deck.

The museum is open every day of the year except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Dinosaur National Monument

Dinosaur National Monument straddles the Utah/Colorado border. You can hike, raft and camp around the National Park Service site's more than 210,000 acres.

However, no visit to Dinosaur National Monument is complete without stopping at the Quarry Exhibit Hall to meet its 150,000 million-year-old residents – Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus and all of their late-Jurassic friends.

Inside the Quarry Exhibit Hall, you'll find more than 1,500 dinosaur fossils (some of which you are allowed to touch) and educational exhibits. Around other parts of Dinosaur National Monument, you can also see petroglyphs and pictographs from the Fremont people who lived in the area nearly 1,000 years ago.

Mount Rushmore

If your kids are school-age, it's likely they've seen Mount Rushmore in one of their textbooks. Nothing compares to seeing this massive National Memorial in person, though.

Visitors can gaze upon the 60-foot-tall faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into the Black Hills of Keystone, South Dakota. Walk the paved Presidential Trail loop for the best views of the monument and, like other National Park Service sites, there is a Junior Ranger program for kids.

There's no fee to visit Mount Rushmore, but the parking fee is $10 per vehicle.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a group of three impressive waterfalls — the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls — that straddle the border between the U.S. and Canada.

You can explore the falls from both sides of the border and much of what you can experience depends on when you plan to visit . Crowds are heaving in the summer, but all attractions, including the Maid of the Mist and Voyage to the Falls boat rides, are open for business.

If you visit during the winter , many attractions may be closed due to much of the area being caked in ice. However, you'll be treated to strikingly beautiful ice formations formed by the icy mist.

No matter what time of year you visit, the falls are illuminated by a colorful light show each evening at dusk.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Two of the world's most active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa – reside within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park . Of the two, Kīlauea has had the most recent active eruptions and there are areas within the park where you can view the eruption .

You can also drive around Kīlauea on the Crater Rim Drive Tour or Chain of Craters Road Tour to see craters, lava tubes and other geological wonders formed by the volcanoes. There are also a number of day hikes where you can view some of these same formations up close.

Similar to other national parks, Volcanoes National Park charges a $30 entrance fee, which is good for seven days. You can also purchase a Hawaii Tri-Park Annual Pass that costs $55. It will get you into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Haleakala National Park and Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park for one full year.

Space Needle

Towering 605 feet above the Seattle skyline (just 25 feet shorter than the Gateway Arch) Seattle's Space Needle is one of the tallest observation towers in the U.S.

The Space Needle was originally constructed for the 1962 World's Fair and is not one of Seattle's most iconic tourist spots . After a quick elevator ride to the top, you'll step out onto an outdoor observation deck surrounded by panes of slanted glass that provide a safety barrier without obstructing your view.

Back inside, you can travel down to the loupe level, which features the world's only revolving glass floor. Timed-entry tickets are available online, which will cut down on the amount of time you have to wait to get to the top when you arrive.

Sequoia & Kings Canyon

Sequoia National Park is best known (and named for) for its giant sequoia trees. Within this rugged forest in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, you'll find some of the largest trees in the world, including the largest living tree in the world, the General Sherman Tree .

There are four lodges and a handful of campgrounds located around the park for overnight stays. The park has its own Junior Ranger program for kids. There's also a Giant Forest Museum where they can learn more about these giant redwoods and why they are so prevalent in the area.

Not content with being named the UK's top on-the-go breakfast destination this year (ahead of McDonald's), Greggs is now targeting the evening meal market - with pizza potentially the main attraction.

CEO Roisin Currie said the bakery chain's evening sales were "growing faster" than any other time of day.

"We are very focused on evening trading at the moment because we believe this is a really profitable part of the business long term," she told The Grocer .

Ms Currie said the company could offer a "breadth of range" to customers - including hot and cold sandwiches, pizza, bakes and salads.

"Pizza is very important for us when competing with the food-to-go market as a whole," she said.

Up to 160 new sites, set up for evening trading, could be opened each year as part of the plans, The Grocer reports. The stores would be opened near train stations, airports and popular commuter routes.

"If a [Greggs] was open and busy at 7am, the shop would open at 6.30am," said Ms Currie. "The same way, if a shop is still busy at 7pm and there is trade around that shop, we will stretch their hours to 7.30pm."

A slight easing in wage growth "will be welcomed" by the Bank of England and could clear a path for more rate cuts later this year, an economist has said.

Ruth Gregory, deputy chief UK economist at Capital Economics, said the latest data drop from the ONS indicates that "labour market conditions are continuing to cool".

However, she warned that despite figures also showing a decline in the unemployment rate, it's unlikely today's release "will move the needle too much for the Bank of England".

"We still think the Bank will pause in September before pressing ahead with two more 25 point rate cuts in November and December," she said.

"But much will depend on a broader range of indicators of price pressures, including inflation. July's inflation figures will be released tomorrow."

Market forecasts were fairly unchanged this morning - pricing in a 35% chance of a base rate cut in September.

The effect of conflict around the world can be seen in the cost of oil and gas on the markets and soon will be evident in household bills. 

As Ukrainian soldiers continue their invasion into Russia, and in an unverified video appear to have taken control of a Russian gas facility key for exporting through Europe, the price of gas edged to 95.74p a therm (the measurement for heat) on Tuesday morning. 

It's down from the 100p a therm high seen on Monday evening but still at an eight-month high.

More expensive gas will mean higher electricity bills.

The oil price rose to a high of $81.88 last seen in late July. A rise in the benchmark oil price, as measured by a barrel of Brent crude, will make things like filling a petrol or diesel tank more expensive. 

In better news for consumers, and specifically holidaymakers, sterling is at a week high against both the dollar and euro with £1 equal to €1.1708 and $1.2797 respectively. 

Yesterday we reported on four straight weeks of losses for the currency.

The Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 100 index of the most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange rose a slight 0.05%, while the larger and more UK-based FTSE 250 index was up 0.14%.

Grocery inflation has risen for the first time since March 2023, according to closely watched industry data.

Prices in food shops rose by 1.8% in the four weeks to 4 August, research by Kantar Worldpanel found.

It follows 17 consecutive months of  easing inflation   in the sector, including during the previous month when the rate dropped to 1.6%.

Vitamins, supplements, drinks and chocolate were among the goods that went up fastest in price.

The research, based on the purchasing habits of 30,000 UK households, also found a surge in spending on drinks and snacks during the  Euros football tournament  and the  Olympic Games .

Wages were 5.4% higher in the second quarter of 2024 than a year ago, the Office for National Statistics has said.

The weekly earnings figures - which the Bank of England is keeping a close eye on in deciding where interest rates should go - exclude bonuses.

The fall from 5.8% was in line with economists' expectations.

The figure remains well above inflation, a concern for the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, which wants to see evidence the battle with high inflation is over before loosening monetary policy.

Interest rates are kept high to discourage spending and encourage saving - when this happens, price rises tend to slow.

Employers expect lower headline inflation to reduce pressure to raise wages over the coming year. 

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said yesterday that employers expect to raise pay by 3% - the lowest expectation in two years.

However, a BoE survey pointed to pay rises of 4.1%. 

Last month, new Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves approved pay rises of at least 5% for millions of public sector workers, including a 22% rise for junior doctors over two years to resolve a long-running industrial dispute.

Unemployment lower than expected

Meanwhile, the percentage of people who are out of work and looking for a job dropped to 4.2% in July.

Those polled by news agency Reuters expected a rise to 4.5%, up from the 4.4%  recorded a month ago .

A low unemployment rate can indicate a healthy economy and - relating back to where we started this post - increase pressure for wages to rise.

Angry Waitrose customers have aired their complaints online after the supermarket shrunk the size of its own label toilet rolls.

The upmarket grocer has made changes to its Essentials loo roll in order to lower the price - including adding an "embossed texture".

The number of sheets has also been reduced from 240 to 190.

A flood of disgruntled customers have aired their views on social media and the Waitrose website.

One user documented the "disappointing" size change, while another said they wished they hadn't "wasted hard-earned money on a 16 pack", adding that they felt "ripped off".

In a one-star review on the Waitrose website, one person said they had bought the toilet roll "for years" but would not purchase it again.

"Very thin. Disintegrates. Smaller rolls smaller sheets. Very poor quality. Waitrose what on earth are you doing."

Another customer said: "Essential Waitrose bathroom tissue has always been my go-to product, surpassing competitors by a mile. What has happened, what have you done to this once incredible product?"

Waitrose said its changes were aimed at providing better value for money, with the price reduced in recent months. A four-pack of the bathroom essential now costs £2, down from £2.50 in May.

A Waitrose spokesperson said: "We recently embossed our rolls to give an improved texture, while also cutting the price to reflect the reduction in sheet count. We always welcome feedback and are already reviewing this with our team to see how we can make improvements.

"We are committed to delivering excellent customer service and are proud to have just been named the best supermarket in the UK. We sincerely apologise if our partner's approach didn't reflect this standard and we're certain it wasn't their intention."

The company also said the size of their own-label loo roll was in line with other brands.

After the revival of popular Cadbury's chocolate bar Top Deck earlier this year, we asked you which discontinued treat you would like to see brought back - and we got so many responses that we've decided to make a weekly feature of it called  Bring It Back . 

Every Tuesday, we'll pick one from our comments box and look at why it was so beloved and, crucially,  find out whether the companies in question might consider reintroducing them.

This week, we turn our attention to Heinz Toast Toppers.

We were inundated with messages about this range of products, which were popular from the 1970s and onwards, before being discontinued in 2015.

Toast Toppers were cans of creamy spread that fans would slather on toast and then grill. They came in flavours including ham and cheese, mushroom and bacon, and chicken and mushroom.

Their disappearance from supermarket shelves has been mourned ever since, with thousands of people following a Facebook group demanding their return.

Aimee Foy, from Manchester, runs that group and told Sky News: "It was just a really nice but versatile snack.

"Like a lot of people, I have really nostalgic memories of having it as a teenager.

"It was tasty, but also really simple and cheap, especially when you compare it to how much you have to spend if you're getting a meal delivered by Uber Eats or something."

She said there remained huge demand for the product and that it would prove especially popular given its relative affordability amid a cost of living crisis.

"I've seen tins on eBay that were six years out of date but going for more than £50, which just shows how much people love it.

"It was only around £1 when they stopped doing it, but even at twice that price people would definitely still buy it.

"It's obviously not a la carte or anything, but we loved it - and I'm sure that people would jump on it if Heinz did decide to bring it back."

Indeed, Heinz is all too aware of the continued interest in Toast Toppers - with the company's official UK Facebook page posting a popular meme in reference to the fixation many fans have with the product.

A Kraft Heinz spokesperson told Sky News: "Toast Toppers were a huge hit with Brits back in the '70s and '80s, but as consumer tastes and trends evolved, Toast Toppers sadly fell out of favour, so we took the decision to pull them from sale in 2015.

"It simply wouldn't have been feasible to continue making them, despite the iconicity of this delicious teatime snack.

"We don't have any immediate plans to bring them back, but we'd never say never and have plenty of exciting innovations in the pipeline that we're confident consumers will love."

Heathrow says a drop in passenger numbers is down to a government scheme that charges non-visa connecting travellers £10 to pass through the airport .

It said the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) had been "devastating for our hub competitiveness" - accounting for a 90,000 drop in passengers.

The chairman of Asda says he is "embarrassed" by the supermarket's recent decline.

The retail giant reported a 2.1% drop in like-for-like sales in the first half of the year.

Asda has also lost market share since it was acquired by the Issa brothers in 2021.

Lord Rose told The Telegraph he was "slightly embarrassed" and did not like "being second, third or fourth".

Card Factory has teamed up with food delivery app Just Eat to offer customers the chance to get greetings cards delivered to their door as quickly as a takeaway.

The partnership is live in 19 stores across the UK, including Liverpool, Manchester and London, and is set to be extended.

Rioting caused sales to plummet as much as 40% in areas where rallies, protests and riots were rumoured to take place last Wednesday, according to a hospitality association.

Businesses reported footfall was down by as much as 75% in some locations, while sales fell by 10% across the country, UKHospitality said.

Shops closed down, events were cancelled in city centres, and customers stayed away, working from home and cancelling day trips to coastal towns.

"These figures are startling and show the enormous impact the riots, and threat of further disorder, have had on our high streets and communities," said Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UKHospitality.

"Bustling, vibrant city centres were turned into ghost towns as the public stayed at home and businesses shut."

A flooring company which trades out of John Lewis has collapsed into administration, resulting in the loss of around 200 jobs.

The Floor Room, a sister firm of Carpetright, closed concessions in 34 John Lewis shops on Friday and appointed administrators PwC.

A message on the company's now-closed website confirms the company has ceased trading and will not complete outstanding orders.

The accounting firm said management at the collapsed company had "exhausted options to secure further funding or a potential sale" prior to calling in administrators.

Some 201 employees are losing their jobs as a result of the move.

You can file a claim with your debit or credit card provider to recover lost funds:

• Credit card:  If you bought any single item costing between £100-£30,000 and paid on a credit card, the card firm is liable if something goes wrong. If any purchase was less than £100, you may still be able to get your money back via chargeback;
• Debit card:  Under chargeback, your bank can try to get your money back from The Floor Room's bank. However, be aware that this is not a legal requirement and it can later be disputed and recalled back.
