Boggarts in the classroom...

You'll also get to see for the first time, a new section of the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, complete with the Boggart wardrobe and sinister Boggart jack-in-the-box.

Ride the Knight Bus...

Plus - explore the inside of the legendary Knight Bus. Experience the bus as Harry would have: as the bus rattles, chandelier sways, beds move and London’s city streets zoom past.

Search for Scabbers...

Step foot in the Great Hall, decorated with over 100 floating candles and the Hogwarts Frog Choir, and begin your search for Scabbers. Use your Studio Tour passport to receive your ‘Mischief Managed’ stamp!

Dark Arts: 13 September - 10 November 2024

Like every Halloween, The Warner Bros. Studio knows how to deliver a thrilling exploration of all things Dark Arts.

Those famous floating pumpkins will of course make their annual appearance, over the great tables laden with the spooky feast.

As always you can follow the Dark Mark - the symbol of Lord Voldemort projected throughout the Studio Tour - mark them on your passport as you go around.

Enjoy learning wand combat with the interactive display of the wand choreographer Paul Harris (he of Order of the Phoenix through to Deathly Hallows fame).

Hogwarts in the Snow: 16 November 2024 – 19 January 2025

Planning your Christmas fun for next year? Hogwarts in the Snow will be back in 2024; hold the dates from 16 Nov 2024 - 19 Jan 2025.

The festive makeover will see the Great Hall transformed with the icy silvers of the iconic Yule Ball scenes. The Gryffindor common room will be dressed for the season and a blanket of film-making snow will cover the Forbidden Forest, Diagon Alley and the magnificent Hogwarts castle model.

What will I see at the Harry Potter Studio, London?

Harry Potter chess pieces at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

Featuring the original Studio sets of the critically acclaimed film franchise, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter is a fan and family friendly day out not to be missed! As a self-guided walking tour, you will get the chance to wander down  Diagon Alley,  peeping into sets such as the Weasley's Joke shop, and Ollivanders. You'll get the chance to step into the actual  Great Hall,  complete with banqueting table and fireplace.

Further down on this page we describe in more detail the  sets you will see on this breathtaking Harry Potter walking tour.

While the Studio Tour is aimed primarily at fans of the Harry Potter film series, if you have an interest in special effects and film sets more generally, there would be plenty to get out of this tour.

The detail you can see in the sets and props on show is awe inspiring and the information on offer as to the process of film making is very instructive. The guides are friendly and helpful and happy to chat if you want a bit of extra information. Some of them were extras from the films themselves so have a bit of insider knowledge.

Only the beginning part of the Studio Tour is guided (although guided Harry Potter tours are available)  You will see two short films and then the guide gathers everyone at the doors of the great hall. If you're lucky (like it's your birthday!) you might even be picked to open the doors. After you step into the hall, they will explain a little about this magnificent room; following this you are free to take the rest of the tour at your own pace

Booking tickets for Warner Bros Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter

ticket collection desk, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of harry Potter

This Harry Potter attraction is always very popular. Unfortunately it is not an attraction that you can just arrive at on the day and gain entry. You will need to book your tickets in advance.

The further in advance you book your tickets the more choice of dates and times you will have. However, you may find late availability on some dates, so it is always worth checking.

You have two choices when it comes to tickets: you can book independently direct from the Warner Bros. Studio Tour website , or alternatively, you can book a combined transport and Studio entrance ticket (see banner below), which will take you from central London to the Studios in Watford. For the latter option you pay extra for the convenience per ticket.

See our page Warner Bros Studio independently by public transport for more details on how to do it on your own.

There are currently three London tour operators who will take you to the Harry Potter Studio in a luxury coach, from Victoria (or Kings Cross) in Central London, with around 4-4.5 hours Studio time.

Other tickets options are available for example:

Warner Bros. Studio Tour with Oxford in one day

Warner Bros. Studio Tour with hotel pick-up from Central London

Harry Potter walking tour + Studio

Where is Warner Bros Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter?

The Warner Bros Studio Tour is not in the centre of London, it is located just outside London. The nearest railway station from London is Watford Junction from where a dedicated shuttle (not free) runs to the studio.

For detailed information on how to find the Warner Bros. Studio please see our dedicated page  Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - visiting independently

For those visitors  staying in Central London , several tour operators offer a dedicated shuttle bus to the studios which include tickets. The tours often have better availability of studio tickets that can be sold out many weeks ahead.

How long is the Harry Potter tour?

Now the Studio has expanded even more, you should allow at least four hours for your visit. Realistically, allowing time for lunch and doing any extras such as Ride a Broomstick (which involve queuing time) many people find they can stay six hours or more.

If you have small children you will need to allow for making stops (see below facilities for children ).

Arriving at Warner Bros Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter

JK Rowling quote Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

If coming by bus, it will take you to just a hundred metres or so from the entrance, and then you are left to walk inside independently.

There are now more queues for security; if you didn't get your tickets delivered to your home address, you will need to pick them up from the ticket machines and a box office outside, you will need to queue for this.

You will then need to queue to go through security which includes a bag check and personal scan. If you are going on an organised tour, your arrival time will allow you about twenty minutes to queue, ready for your pre-booked entry time into the Studio itself.

Facilities and eating opportunities at Harry Potter Studios

Backlot Cafe Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

Cafes and eating places at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

If you have any extra spare time before your tour begins, you can grab a drink in the Cafe, which also sells a range of snacks.

There are a number of cafes at the Warner Bros. Studio including The Chocolate Frog Cafe at the beginning of your tour, serving indulgent treats such as the specialty hot chocolate and ice cream.

There is also the Hub Cafe serving Starbucks drinks and snacks, and the Food Hall which includes breakfast, sandwiches and hot and cold meals, and lots from the bakery.

You can bring your own food with you but it must only be eaten in the Backlot area or outside picnic area. The Backlot Cafe is located halfway round the tour and it is here you can sample the ever-popular drink, Butterbeer!

Butterbeer is non -alcoholic and has quite a sweet froth to it, with a slight taste of butterscotch. In addition the Backlot also serves hot food – both children’s and adult’s - from a daily specials board, sandwiches and salads, snacks and hot and cold drinks.

You can choose to eat and drink inside or out, where there are nice views of the next section of the tour - the  Knight Bus, Hogwarts Bridge, Godric's Hollow and Privet Drive .

Gift shops at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

There are now three gift shops at the Studio Tour. There is the  Railway Shop , a train-themed souvenir shop, the  Forbidden Forest Shop  (selling Forbidden Forest related items), and the main  Studio Shop  located at the exit.

At these three you can purchase such Harry Potter merchandise as the books by J.K. Rowling, Hogwarts T-shirts and robes, house jumpers, pens, key rings, postcards, sweets, wands and cuddly toys. Prices range from around £2 for a postcard to around £20 for a cuddly toy.

In one section there is even a personalisation service - making that gift just that extra bit special.

There’s a toilet block in the car park (by the bus stop), and a bigger rest room in the lobby, plus a couple of small toilets in the first half of the tour and more toilets by the Backlot Cafe, halfway round the tour.

If you need somewhere to store any small suitcases (or coats and bags) you may have, you can do this free of charge in the lobby cloakroom. Pushchairs are also encouraged to be left here if possible due to the restricted amount of space in the Studio Tour.

There is free Wi-Fi throughout the Studio Tour - so you can share your photos as you go (see below for restrictions).

Digital guide hire and souvenir guidebook

If you wish you can hire a Digital Guide, with extra information on the Studio Tour, for around £5 from the desk in the lobby before you go in. You can also purchase a Souvenir Guidebook of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London for around £10, with behind-the-scenes secrets and beautiful photography.

Photography and video footage

The cinema areas and the green-screen areas are the only parts where you are not allowed to take photographs or video footage. Otherwise, you are free to do so in all other areas of the Studio Tour.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London encourages you to share your photos with them on social media and there are signs up around the Studio telling you how to do this.

Interactive opportunities at Harry Potter Studio including free and paid for

Marauder's Map - Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - the Making of Harry Potter

As well as the sets and props there are also a few interactive things you can do at the Studio. For example, at  Weasley's Burrow  there is plenty to do.

There is a  wand choreography demonstration  (free), featuring a video demonstrating correct wand moves; very popular with the kids as they see themselves perform in front of two mirrors, much like the mirror of ‘Erised.’

If you wish to  ‘ride a broomstick ’ you can pay extra (check the prices on the board beforehand), to perform in front of a green screen’, on to which a marvelous Hogwarts background is super imposed, and as a memento take home with you your choice of photograph, DVD or HD USB. This attraction is a highlight so it is best to check out the queues and make your timings accordingly. Note,  photography is not allowed in this area.

Outside you can also have your  photo taken in the original  Ford Anglia car ,  like Harry and Ron, and even wobble yourself over Hogwarts Bridge!

Throughout there are  interactive touch-screen boards  which play videos showing the cast and crew, or information about the making of the films, such as the  'Marauder's Map ' board, and around the magnificent Hogwarts Castle.

Accessibility and children

Wand Demonstration Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London have done everything they can to make the Studio Tour accessible for wheelchair users. There is a lower window for ticket collection and step free access to the attraction. The Studio Tour itself, including the loos, gift shop and special effects green screen area, is completely accessible.

If you have small children or just need a break yourself, there are seats dotted around inside where they can sit and rest if needed. Fold up chairs are available for those who require one if you ask in the lobby. There are also toilets to be found around the Studio Tour.

There are some interactive things for younger ones to do but because of the nature of the Studio Tour and the amount of information on offer, it is probably most appropriate for children years eight and up.

As you hand your tickets over, if you have any children with you, they will be given a Studio Tour Passport each. In this A5 size booklet kids are able to collect stamps as they wander around the Studio Tour, and even find the Golden Snitch if they follow the clues on each page.

Entering the Studio and the Great Hall at Hogwarts

Entrance to the Great Hall Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

There are several 'holding rooms' before you enter the Studio itself. One you have gone through the lobby area, you queue to enter a smallish room featuring props and memories on screens of the Harry Potter films, and even Harry's cupboard under the stairs from Privet Drive - where the Story Begins...

The main cast of Harry Potter warmly welcome you to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

When you begin your tour you are guided into a large room with cinematography on the walls, and an introduction behind the original motivations for making the films. You will see interviews with the producer and the ‘discoverer’ of Harry Potter, the production consultant, and many others who were there from the beginning.

You are then guided into a cinema room, where you take your seat to watch a short film introduced by the three main actors themselves, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. They acknowledge all the hard work of the thousands of people who worked behind the scenes on the famous films and made them become a reality.

Step inside the Great Hall at Hogwarts School

The magic really comes alive as you step in through the doors of the Great Hall, of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As you walk down the real stone floor, you enter the vast hall, with its high ceiling and tall Gothic windows. You can see the long house tables, dressed with individual place settings, all hand created for the films. Around the edges of the hall you will see models dressed in Hogwarts robes, the great fireplace and winged beasts holding the lanterns.

At the top of the room is the high table where models of the staff stand; Dumbledore at his Owl Lectern, Professors McGonagall and Snape, in their robes, and a huge Hagrid. Here too is the famous Sorting Hat, sitting at the front, just as it did in the films. After about ten minutes you are told they have to close the doors to allow the next group to come through, but you are free to come back later if you wish.

Explore the main Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter at your leisure

You are then free to go at your leisure into the rest of the studios. There is so much to see here it is great to be able to take your time and wander at your own pace. One of the first things you see as you go in is the 'ice palace' used in the film The Goblet of Fire, for the Yule Ball.

Below we look at some of the amazing sets from the eight films you will get to see.

What sets will I see at the Harry Potter Studio London?

Professor Sprout's Herbology Greenhouse, Mandrake, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

In the studios, large sets intermingle with smaller props, all of which took months to create.

Professor Sprout's Greenhouse

In 2022 a new permanent addition appeared at Warner Bros. Studio London: Professor Sprout's Greenhouse.

At the studio you will have the chance to step into the greenhouse and stop to pull out a potted Mandrake as part of an interactive display.

Be enthralled by exotic and magical plants as you learn Herbology lessons with Professor Sprout.

Look out for the Venomous Tentacula hanging from the ceiling as you walk through the greenhouse.

A fantastic new addition to the much loved studio.

Gringotts Bank

Featuring the magnificent banking hall, with crystal chandeliers come face to face with the goblin bankers, peering down at you. Visit the Lestrange vault, including the Sword of Gryffindor and Helga Hufflepuff’s Cup, one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes.

Find out about our experience of the exhibition by reading our blog on the Gringotts Bank expansion .

Other top sets at the Harry Potter Studio

You will see the boys’ dormitory complete with made up beds around the central fire-burner.

Snape’s Potions room contains over 950 potions jars, as well as cauldrons ready for mixing on the table, dried herbs and even shrunken heads!

At Dumbledore’s Tower there is one of the most expensive set pieces created – the telescope – only used in a background scene. Here you can see mannequins of Dumbledore standing in his robes, and shelves and shelves of books, as well as old magical artefacts, such as the mysterious pensieve.

At the Weasley’s Burrow you can wave your hands over various boards, making them ‘magically’ start performing mundane household chores such as chopping carrots, knitting and ironing! This is popular with kids and adults alike. You can see here the Weasley magical clock with its nine golden hands, each pointing to one member of the Weasley family and their whereabouts.

Nearby is Hagrid’s hut with its quirky roof; a cosy indoor scene complete with mannequin of Hagrid, table and chairs, furs, lanterns and cauldron on the fireplace.

In the Gryffindor common room, more life size mannequins stand, Ron, Hermione and Harry, and you see the actual chairs by the fire, with real tapestries and portraits (all created from scratch for the films) and the wireless with ‘moving lips.’

Around the corner you can view the portrait of the Fat Lady, the Mirror of Erised , and the giant clock pendulum from Hogwarts Clock Tower.

If you are interested to see the individual wands for all the characters, a wand dial features all the principle ones, and you can see up close how differently they are all crafted. More than 3000 were made for the films altogether.

You will see the area with the set of the Ministry of Magic and the giant Magic is Might monument of muggles being crushed in their rightful place by the statue, from the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Malfoy’s Manor features the long table with assembled Death Eaters, Voldemort at the head with Nagini the 20 foot long snake, slithering down underneath a suspended model of the victim in the stories.

Professor Dolores Umbridge's pink office is on show, complete with all the painted kitten plates you remember from the films.

It is in this area where the famous winged-boar gates of Hogwarts stand, (the gates are based on Il Porcellino, a bronze fountain of a boar, made in the 1630s in Florence, Italy).

They guard the entrance to The Forbidden Forest . Hagrid stands just inside the gates, you can peek through and see him holding his lantern as you wait for the gates to open - to enter if you dare!

In the Forbidden Forest you'll see 19 enormous trees each with a diameter of over 12 feet and a full size model of Buckbeak as well as the magnificent Hippogriff and Aragog the giant spider, and his rather large babies.

Following the Forbidden Forest are more famous sets: the impressive Hogwarts Express , the enchanting Diagon Alley and fabulous outside sets including the Knight Bus, No 4 Privet Drive, the Hogwarts Bridge, Lily and James's house in Godric's Hollow and the Ford Anglia car .

Hogwarts Express

Hogwarts Express Warner Bros. Studio Tour

Your next part of the tour takes you through to a recreation of Kings Cross Station, with its own ‘Platform 9 ¾’. Here you can pose for a photo, of yourself, pushing the model luggage trolley ‘through’ the wall, just like in the films.

The Hogwarts Express is a beautiful red steam engine, the original used in the films, and you can board it! This is a popular attraction, and there is normally a slight queue to board. Once on board, you can walk down the corridor, peering into the compartments complete with student belongings; sweet wrappers from the trolley lady, satchels and an owl cage.

Near to the train is the Railway Shop, a train-themed souvenir shop, where you can purchase Harry Potter memorabilia.

What sets are there outside at Harry Potter studios?

Knight Bus and Privet Drive Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

There is seating outside just beyond the Backlot Cafe where you are allowed to bring your own food to eat. Here you also get a nice view of the Knight Bus, the houses in Privet Drive, Hogwarts Bridge, Godric's Hollow, and further down the Ford Anglia car too!

At the Knight Bus you can go inside the back door and look inside... see Bert and Ernie - the shrunken heads!

Number 4, Privet Drive

The famous house where it all began... Step inside Number 4, Privet Drive.

See the Dursleys' living room with a flurry of Hogwarts letters from the iconic scene in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone , plus their kitchen and the Aunt Marge dinner scene from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban .

Hogwarts Bridge

The bridge itself is a highlight – you can wander along it yourself and imagine you are walking up to the famous castle.

Lily and James’ house in Godric’s Hollow

See the fated house that Harry lived in until he was one - when he was attacked by Lord Voldemort himself. You can even see the blast in the roof where the attack claimed the lives of Lily and James Potter.

Ford Anglia and chess game

Outside there is the famous large scale chess pieces from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , and the original Ford Anglia, in which you are free to sit and have your picture taken.

The Creature Shop

Creature Shop Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

After leaving the courtyard area, you enter the second part of your tour, the Creature Shop, where there are displays of the animatronics used, and waxworks of main cast.

Here you can see suspended up high the huge model of Aragog, the giant spider and the basilisk’s head.

There is also the animatronic Buckbeak, and Hagrid, masks of the Gringotts Goblins, models of Dobby and Kreacher, and a moving Monster Book of Monsters.

Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

Following this is one of the highlights of the Studio, a walk down the actual Diagon Alley!

Entering at Gringott’s Bank with all its wonky charm; next door is Ollivanders , the famous shop where Harry gets his first wand.

Other shops include Eeylops Owl Emporium , Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream shop , Flourish and Blotts Bookseller, and very overtly in its bright colours, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes , Fred and George’s Joke Shop.

This is a lovely set to take photos in.

Set designs and paintings from the Harry Potter films

Hogwarts Castle set design

Leading out from Diagon Alley you go through to a room where you can see lots of drawings and blueprints of all the set designs, such as Hagrid’s Hut, the Burrow, Hogsmeade and of course Hogwarts itself.

If you like artwork there is a white gallery with lots of beautiful paintings of the characters, with notable scenes from the books.

If architecture is of interest, here you will also see amazing scaled models of all the buildings featured in the films; such as Diagon Alley, Ollivanders Wand Shop, Hogsmeade and classrooms in Hogwarts. The models themselves are highly intricate and fascinating to see.

Hogwarts Castle, the original scale model used in the films

Hogwarts Castle Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

When you enter the next room there is, in a quietly blue lit room, a very wonderful scene: Hogwarts Castle, the original large castle used for the films, resplendent on its mountain side, with pine forests surrounding.

It is a 1:24 scale model of Hogwarts; this is very large and fills a great space, allowing you to walk all the way around it. The lighting is very effective, changing through ‘day-time’ to ‘night-time,’ giving very different perspectives.

Every part was detailed so you can see the astronomy tower, the Owlery, the bridge and the courtyard as well as the Great Hall.

Around the model castle are many interactive screens – great for kids – giving information on how it was constructed and how it was used in filming.

Wand Tribute Room

Wand Tribute room at Harry Potter World London

Following the Castle room you exit via an impressive Wand Room, a room stacked high with thousands of pretend wand boxes. This is a lovely tribute room where each member of the cast and crew of all eight films has their name inscribed on a wand box. Appropriately, J.K. Rowling herself has a place here.

This room leads you back out to the lobby, through the gift shop where you can pick up a memento of your Harry Potter day.

And so ends your Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. A very magical day out, with masses of opportunities to learn more about the films at every corner. Like Hogwarts, it might just be somewhere you wish to return to again.

Fact: In my entire life, I’ve only cried once at a tourist attraction.

And judge me all you want, but this cryfest happened at a Harry Potter studio tour.

… Allow me to explain myself.

Like most children born in the 90s, much of my youth was spent daydreaming about the arrival of my Hogwart’s acceptance letter. As this dream dwindled with the hardships of adulting, I instead took comfort in carbs and magical movie marathons.

But, it didn’t take much for these childhood dreams to resurface. A trip to London was all it took to re-open the floodgates (literally).

Let me tell you: for a Harry Potter fan, there is no attraction on this Earth more overwhelming and amazing than the  Warner Bros Studio Tour London, (AKA London’s Harry Potter set tour), which brings you through the filming site for all 8 movies in the Harry Potter franchise.

In addition to sets, you’re also shown countless props, the best gift shop in the world, and even a chance to taste butter beer for yourself. Come on now, is it at all a surprise that I bawled when I got to the end?

Read onwards for important info to know about the tour, some tips to keep in mind and of course, a recap of the experience (with plenty of photos!) Be careful for this section, as spoilers are abound!

Basic information to know about the Harry Potter Set Tour

If you’re interested in booking the epic Warner Bros Studio Tour in London for yourself, then here are some basic must-knows.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Tickets Info:

I first visited this attraction in 2014 and it was a hot mess then, and has only grown in popularity in the past few years.

If this Harry Potter set tour is a must-do for you, then make sure you book your tickets WELL in advance or you risk not being able to go!

Luckily, even when tickets are sold out on the main site, there are tours you can book online that will have tickets available for sold out dates.

Sometimes, booking with a tour is worthwhile because you not only guarantee your tickets, you also get the convenience of private transport there, which is nice and much less stressful than using public transport yourself.

Here is a breakdown of different Harry Potter Studio tour options that include transport. For your convenience, I also lay out their costs and what they have to offer:

Tickets can also be purchased online from the studio itself  here.

How to Get to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London:

Despite its name, the Warner Bros Studio London is actually located in Leavesden, which is northwest of London.

While booking a tour/private transport is the easiest and most convenient way to get there, it is still quite painless to reach via public transit, as a shuttle bus runs from Watford Junction railway station.

To get to the Watford Junction station, you need to make use of London’s overground system.

Not sure about the best route to get there? Check out this handy trip planner .  The tour’s website recommends that you arrive at Watford Junction 45 minutes prior to your tour time.

Remember to bring change, as the cost for the shuttle bus is 2 pounds each way.

NOTE : Leave a lot of leeway for you to get there. We definitely got lost a few times due to the transfers, and were stressed to the max! For a more stress-free experience, consider prebooking a tour that comes with transport. Here’s one for under $100USD.

Tips for Doing the Harry Potter Set Tour Like a Pro

Having addressed the basics, here are some tips you should keep in mind when planning your visit:

1. Check on the Warner Bros Studio Tour website for special events

The studio tour often has special weeks during which there are specialized displays or demonstrations.

If you have quite some time in London, I suggest looking up when special events are happening and to plan accordingly.

I was luckily around for the beginning of Wand Week, so I got to see wandmakers do their thing and I even got to pose with some Death Eaters. Super cool!

london harry potter tour shop

2. Allow extra time for travel

Especially if you are new to London, trying to navigate the transit there can take time, so give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the studio.

That being said, do not hyperventilate if your ticketed time is fast approaching. While the reservation system does assign you a time, they won’t turn you away if you are a bit late.

london harry potter tour shop

3. Don’t forget to print your Warner Bros Studio Tour ticket

This will make the whole process smoother.

One girl that came with us didn’t print hers and upon arrival, she realized that her order never actually went through.

Luckily, even though they claim there is no box office at the attraction, she was able to purchase a ticket there, but do book in advance to save yourself the trouble.

4. Set yourself a budget for magical souvenirs

Trust me, when you enter the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop for the first time, you will lose all sense of self control.

You will suddenly want all these things that you would never need.

Legit wizard robe? Okay!

Replica wand? Yes please.

There are so many amazingly crafted souvenirs for sale that you will easily empty your wallet.

For budget-conscious backpackers (like me) or large families with crying children, setting a budget beforehand is a must.

london harry potter tour shop

5. Grab yourself a free Warner Bros Studio Tour London passport

At some point during the tour, you might notice children getting awesome embossed stamps on a Harry Potter passport.

Uh, yeah, those are actually not just for kids!

I shamelessly (and sweetly) asked a staff member for one, and they kindly obliged.

Getting the stamps is fun and having a Harry Potter passport is pretty much the best souvenir ever.

6. Be sure to check out other Harry Potter filming locations around the UK too

If you’ve made it all the way to Leavesden, you’re actually pretty close to a variety of other Harry Potter filming locations!

While this set tour is of course incredible, there are dozens of other real-life filming locations scattered around the UK that you can visit for yourself. Click here for a full list.

Harry Potter Set Tour Recap with Photos

With those tips out of the way, I’d love to show you some photos and a brief overview of the experience from my visit in 2014. Note that they have added a lot since then, but still…

WARNING: spoilers, spoilers, spoilers.

Some would say that the best way to experience this tour is by seeing everything first hand, but if you are curious to see photos and more, feel free to scroll further.

london harry potter tour shop

Your magical experience begins as soon as you walk into the building. All around the lobby are canvases with various Harry Potter characters, as well as props and other cool artifacts hanging off the walls.

Even the task of waiting in line (typically the most mundane thing ever) is a joy for this tour.

The queue moves very quickly and there is plenty for you to nerd out about as you wait.

Most notably, Harry’s  cupboard under the stairs , is right next to the queuing area, ensuring that you get a perfect view of this iconic set.

london harry potter tour shop

You’ll notice that groups are taken in based on their spot in line, rather than their timed reservation.

This is why there is some flexibility when it comes to your arrival time.

If you’re a few minutes late, no worries, just hop in the queue and you will make it in all-the-same.

The tour begins with a brief video introduction to the franchise, followed by a preshow featuring Rupert, Daniel and Emma themselves.

As this preshow concludes, the screen reveals the doors to the  Great Hall!  During my tour, they invited any birthday kids to come up and help open the doors.

After  seriously  wishing it was my birthday, I bitterly watched two ecstatic kids live out their childhood dreams, revealing the first stop of the tour, the amazing…

1. Great Hall!

This is the the only part of the tour where your time will be limited, as they let tour groups in every few minutes.

As such, if you want photos, be sure to snap them  quickly !

Being in this room is an unreal feeling. In addition to the long tables, cutlery and elaborate set pieces, you also get to view costumes from students in each house, and important Hogwarts faculty as well!

london harry potter tour shop

2. The Big Room

After your time in the Great Hall, you are brought into the  Big Room , which houses a variety of sets, props and costumes.

Here, you are given free reign to explore for yourself and gawk at all the amazing pieces the room contains!

Highlights for me were definitely the  Potions classroom  (complete with a Snape costume on display),  the Gryffindor Common Room  and  the Weasley House .

london harry potter tour shop

Many of the sets also have interactive buttons where you can make objects move by pressing them.

This was especially cool in the Weasley kitchen, where the touch of a button could make an iron move on its own, make vegetables chop themselves, etc. Super neat!

london harry potter tour shop

For those seeking a sweet photo opp, there are several green screen opportunities to ride a broom as a Quidditch player and more! I didn’t wait in line for this bit, but it definitely looked like a lot of fun! Here are some photos from the Big Room:

london harry potter tour shop

3. The Backlot

After perusing the Big Room, you are brought outside to the  Backlot , home to a variety of sets including Harry’s  Privet Drive home , the  Hogwarts Bridge , the  Knight Bus  and of course,  the concession stands!

It’s at this point in the tour that you can live out your childhood fantasy of sipping a nice, cold  butterbeer.

london harry potter tour shop

Be sure to explore the bridge before you purchase a butterbeer, as no food or drink is allowed on that set.

london harry potter tour shop

Now, while public opinion seems to be split on the taste of butterbeer, I have to say that  I. loved. every. single. sip.

It’s very possible that I was blinded by the magic of my surroundings, but I would argue that it’s worth a try regardless!

NOTE: If you want to purchase a souvenir cup, remember to bring a bag or something to wrap it in, as that stuff can get mighty sticky. Here’s a sample of the cool things you’ll see in the backlot!

london harry potter tour shop

4. Art Department, Creature Effects and Diagon Alley

When you’re ready to go back inside, countless wonders from the  creature effects & art department  await you. Here, you really get to appreciate the depth of work put into creating a whole magical world.

I was really wowed by everything.

london harry potter tour shop

In this area, you will see masks, wigs, models and more of your favourite magical creatures.

In this second half of the tour as well, you get to walk through Diagon Alley. The details and work in the set will absolutely blow you away. The shops look so real, you’ll be tempted to go knocking on their doors.

london harry potter tour shop

5. Hogwarts Castle Model

And lastly, the grand finale of the Harry Potter set tour… The model of Hogwarts!

This one here is a real showstopper.

A walkway surrounding the model allows you to view it from all angles, taking in the fine details of this wonderful school.

For many Harry Potter fans, seeing the castle like this is a dream come true. Now, if only it were real!

london harry potter tour shop

At the end of the tour, just before the entrance of the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop, you will see this wonderfully beautiful quote appear on the screen:

london harry potter tour shop

It was at this point that  I began to bawl.  I couldn’t help it!

Everything that I loved about the series had been shown to me in the past few hours, and for that short period of time, I got to live out my dream of seeing the magical world that made my childhood.

Messy and gross, I walked into the gift shop, which was a massive treasure trove of things you never knew you wanted or needed. Wands for every character? I’ll take 100.

And there you have it,  the most magical experience ever . One day, I  will   visit the Wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but until then, I think this tour has given me enough happy & geeky memories to last. …. At least for the next little while.

Enjoyed every bit of your blog article.Much thanks again. Really Cool.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

bookmarked!!, I like your blog!

thanks Jane!! 😀

Hi Christina! I’m going to be traveling alone to London this week, would the Harry Potter tour be fun for a solo traveler? Also, I was considering buying a groupon for a night tour, but the picture of you holding the butter beer appears to be outside? I guess we would be missing this part of the tour if I went at night then eh?

hi Lisa, I hope this comment isn’t too late! but YES YES YES the tour would 100% still be fun as a solo traveler (provided that you like Harry Potter haha). I didn’t realize they had a special night tour, but the butterbeer was outside in a special lot where they had lots of big props and set pieces (it’s part of the tour) so I can’t imagine they would leave it out for any reason. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Thank you for this article and the pics. I always need to take a peek of the atmosphere beforehand since I’m going solo. I hope they will let me use my selfie stick inside.

Stay in a Harry Potter themed hotel

If you’re going all out for your Harry Potter tour of London, you can make your entire trip magical down to the very hotel you sleep in. There are aren’t a lot to choose from, but here are your options for London Harry Potter hotels as of 2024.

Georgian House Hotel

The Georgian House Hotel has really branded itself as the Harry Potter hotel in London, offering Potterheads a variety of “wizard experiences” from which to choose. One of those experiences is to stay in one of their magical hotel rooms.

georgian house hotel wizard chambers gothic hotel room harry potter london hotel

Guests can choose between Wizard Chambers and Enchanted Chambers , both of which give the feel of staying in a Hogwarts dormitory, with strong gothic castle vibes. One guest room is even concealed behind a bookcase door! That’s just my cup of tea.

Of course, you’ll need to shell out some money for these themed rooms. On our trip, we opted to save on accommodations to splurge on activities. But I think a stay at a Harry Potter-inspired hotel can be a fun splurge if it’s in your budget.

Hagrid’s Hut in Watford

To stay in the Hagrid’s Hut themed hotel, you’ll have to travel a little ways outside of London proper. You’ll get the feel of staying in the game keeper’s cabin, including being away from the bustle of the city.

You’ll find miniatures of many of Hagrid’s pet beasts, like a hippogriff, owls, and even a mini acromantula (the giant spiders in the Forbidden Forest). Hagrid’s Hut features two bedrooms and a living area, making it a good choice for families and groups.

It’s best to stay in Hagrid’s Hut if you are planning to drive, including driving to the Harry Potter studio tour . Keep in mind that you’ll need to plan for extra time to commute into the city to visit the other Harry Potter attractions in London.

If you want to find more Harry Potter themed rentals near the Harry Potter studio tour, check out my complete guide and breakdown of the choices.

Glamping in Hagrid’s Hut

How’s this for a unique Harry Potter hotel? You can go glamping inside of Hagrid’s Hut near the Harry Potter studio tour. Simply known as “The Hut,” this one-of-a-kind accommodation is a dead ringer for Hagrid’s hut as shown in the Harry Potter movies.

It sleeps up to five people, which makes it great for families or groups. You’ll have bunk beds, a deep soaker tub, and a kitchenette to reduce food costs on your holiday.

Note that this Harry Potter hotel of sorts is not in London proper, so it won’t be very close to the rest of the Harry Potter things to do in London. Plan accordingly.

Take a Harry Potter walking tour

A London Harry Potter walking tour was one of the highlights of my magical Harry Potter tour of London long weekend, and I think it should be high on your list of priorities. It’s a chance to take in London in my favorite way — by walking.

Along the way, you can visit many of the Harry Potter filming locations in London and hear behind-the-scenes anecdotes about filming the movie series. Depending on the tour you take, you may also get to play games like Harry Potter trivia.

Millenium Bridge Harry Potter filming location London harry potter walking tour

I wrote a detailed breakdown and review of the London Harry Potter walking tour I took as well as a comparison with the other major tour companies. If you don’t need the detailed breakdown, go ahead and book directly here:

Reminder : When booking a tour on Viator, always make sure you’ve started a session with Rakuten ! If you install the extension in your browser, all it takes is one click, and you get anywhere from 2-10% cash back from your Viator booking! I have personally gotten more than $1,000 back that way.

Enjoy a Harry Potter themed afternoon tea

Afternoon tea is a quintessentially London experience and a must-do on any trip to the city. Luckily, there are seemingly infinite options when it comes to unique afternoon teas in London , including several options for a Harry Potter afternoon tea.

Note that for any of these afternoon tea experiences, you’ll want to book early. Not booking your afternoon tea in advance is one of the most common tourist mistakes when visiting London. Make your reservations well in advance so you don’t miss out!

Wizard afternoon tea at the Wands & Wizards’ Exploratorium

The afternoon tea at the Wands & Wizards’ Exploratorium is probably the most famous and most popular Harry Potter afternoon tea in London. It’s conveniently located in Soho within easy walking distance of other Potter attractions, like the Palace Theater (home to the Cursed Child Play) and the MinaLima bookstore.

In this interactive Harry Potter afternoon tea experience, the entire building is Potter-themed. You’ll use a magic wand to do things like open up locked boxes, turn the lights on, and brew your potions. For adults, there are a few adult potions you can make as well.

This Harry Potter afternoon tea experience starts at £32.00 for children and £42.00 for adults.

Option : for ease of planning, you can combine a London Harry Potter walking tour with a magical afternoon tea all in one. This tour company includes the walking section and then takes you right to The Wands & Wizards Exploratorium for tea.

Cutter and Squidge afternoon tea at the Common Room

Cutter and Squidge is another company accommodating Harry Potter fans with a unique afternoon tea experience. Cutter and Squidge is a bakery run by a pair of sisters that specializes in cakes, so guests rave about the quality of the food and sweets here.

Their Harry Potter afternoon tea follows a theme; it was once a potions room theme, but it’s currently a Gryffindor Common Room theme.

Cutter and Squidge is also located in Soho, making it a convenient location when touring the other Harry Potter attractions in London. Prices begin at £34.99 for children and £44.99 for adults.

georgian house hotel harry potter afternoon tea london, steaming cauldron

The Georgian House Hotel offers Harry Potter afternoon teas in addition to Potter-inspired hotel rooms. At their afternoon tea, you will be given a wizard’s hat to wear during your afternoon tea experience and have the opportunity to brew your own potion in a cauldron — complete with dry ice to contribute to the ambience.

Your afternoon tea treats are served inside Hedwig’s owl cage, and there are several menu options available, including a vegan menu. Note that this Harry Potter afternoon tea experience is only available on weekend afternoons.

The Harry Potter afternoon tea at the Georgian House hotel starts at £20 for children (“mini wizards”) and £40 for adult wizards.

Visit Platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross Station

When JK Rowling chose King’s Cross Station as the location where Harry and his schoolmates would catch a train to Hogwarts, I don’t know if she ever could have imagined how much that would leave its mark on one of London’s busiest transportation hubs.

Over the years, the location of the real life Platform 9 ¾ within King’s Cross has changed many times. When I first visited back in 2009, there was a simple trolley placed to look like it was halfway through a wall, and you could wander up at any time for a photo. Over the years, as the sight became increasingly more popular, they had to relocate the Platform multiple times to accommodate the crowds of people who wanted to see it in person and take that iconic photo — off to Hogwarts!.

Now, Platform 9 ¾ has a more permanent home alongside the Platform 9 ¾ shop, one of the official Harry Potter shops in the city. And if you’re looking for Harry Potter things to do in London, a visit to Platform 9 ¾ is simply essential.

If you happen to visit on September 1st, you can take part in an annual celebration marking the day the Hogwarts Express leaves from King’s Cross station each year to begin another year at Hogwarts.

You can read more about the Platform 9 ¾ shop and my tips on navigating the crowds at the photo spot in my guide to London Harry Potter stores .

Seek adventure in a Harry Potter escape room

Another fun and unique idea for Harry Potter things to do in London is to do a magical escape room! There are several options for these in the city. Here are the three main ongoing Harry Potter escape rooms, though always check and see if there happen to be any seasonal escape room offerings anywhere during your visit!

Breakin’ Wizarding School

In this Harry Potter escape room, you are a student tasked with finding a precious artifact. It will involve exploring areas of your castle school that have never been explored before. The Breakin’ Wizarding School escape room has a minimum of 2 players and costs from £82.

Location : 89 Holloway Rd, London N7

Enigma Quests

Enigma Quests hosts a Magical Witchcraft and Wizardry Escape Room in London. In this one-hour escape room, your magical group become students of a “prestigious School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” — taking your O.W.L.s — I mean generic end of year exams. Can you get out with an “Outstanding” or will you walk away with a “T” for “Troll?”

The Enigma Quest Harry Potter London escape room is intended for teams of 3-5 people, though their website claims the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry can be completed by a team of 2 if you really know your stuff.

Location : 2-12 Wilson Street, EC2M 7LS, Shoreditch

Cost : From £105

City of Wizards outdoor escape

City of Wizards is a different sort of escape room — instead of being locked in a physical room, you are set with tasks and clues to solve throughout London City. To play the game, you download an app and take on the role of Theodgar, a wizard who wants to protect non-magic folk.

This variation of a Harry Potter escape room begins at Westminster station and takes you to many of the Harry Potter filming locations in London. This might be a nice choice for someone limited on time who wants to combine the experience of an escape room with a Harry Potter walking tour.

This costs from € 9.99 per person.

Spend a day at the Harry Potter studio tour

Of course you can’t miss the number one Harry Potter attraction in London: the Harry Potter studio tour . This gives you access to the actual film studio where the eight Harry Potter films were made.

You’ll get to see the actual sets like the Gryffindor common room, the potions room, Gringotts Bank, the Great Hall, and Dumbledore’s Office. You’ll see what it feels like to stroll down the real Diagon Alley and relax in the Weasleys’ kitchen.

gryffindor common room inside the harry potter studio tour one of the best harry potter things to do in London

You’ll also get to try butterbeer on tap as well as butterbeer ice cream — this is one of only a few places in the world where you can do so, the Harry Potter store in NYC being one of the others. It’s also one of the best places to buy official Harry Potter merchandise in London.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the Harry Potter studio tour, because it’s so much bigger than people think. It’s also a little ways outside of the city center, which means you’ll need to take a train and then a free bus, or book your tour through a third party tour company .

Whichever way you choose, make sure you book this early! Slots for the studio tour sell out literally months in advance.

Watch the Harry Potter & the Cursed Child play

I’ll be the first to say that my feelings about the plot and script of Cursed Child are — mixed. If you’re not aware, Potter author JK Rowling developed the storyline for the play, which takes place when Potter and his friends are adults sending their children to school.

But the Cursed Child play was written by another writer, Jack Thorne. Some people consider it a disgrace, others love it, and still others — like me — mostly enjoy it but prefer to consider it fan fiction as opposed to actual Potter canon.

palace theater exterior london harry potter and the cursed child play

Anyway, if you haven’t seen Cursed Child live, then you really need to, if for no other reason than the amazing special effects. Yes, they do magic on stage!

While Cursed Child has been condensed in some cities — like New York — into one single play, it’s still done in the original two parts at the Palace Theater in London, so this will take up a chunk of your time on your Harry Potter tour of London.

Tip : If you book the Original Harry Potter Locations walking tour on a weekend morning, it takes you right to the Palace Theater before the first part of Cursed Child starts.

Check out the London Harry Potter shops

If you’re a Potterhead doing a Harry Potter tour of London, of course you’re going to want to load up on magical souvenirs. London has really embraced its Harry Potter tourism, and there are always new Harry Potter shops popping up all over the city, some that are better than others.

house of minalima harry potter shop in london fireplace with letters christmas

You probably already know about the Platform 9 ¾ shop at King’s Cross Station, but there are lots more to choose from as well, depending on the type of souvenirs you’re looking to buy. There’s also a lot of stores that are selling cheap versions of merchandise at premium prices.

To make the best choices for the best Harry Potter shops in London, check out my guide to the best and worst shops, including details on pricing and what you’ll find at each.

Visit a Harry Potter pub: the Cauldron

The Cauldron Bar in London is a Harry Potter potions making experience for grown-ups. You can get the experience of being in a Hogwarts potions class with the added benefit of enjoying an adult beverage, creating your own cocktail or mocktail.

This Harry Potter pub in London has really committed to the theme, with an all-out magical decor and environment. They change up the themes of their classes depending on the season and even have special events for holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day (love potion, anyone?).

While the Cauldron seems to be geared toward adults, there are options for children to participate as well. You can even get a “season pass” to come back for each new themed experience in the year.

Adult tickets start at £35.99 at off-peak times and increase at more popular times. Make sure you book in advance.

Location : 5D Stoke Newington Road, London

Photograph the Harry Potter statue in Leicester Square

If you don’t already know, Leicester Square is a big deal in cinema. It’s the site of the biggest movie premieres in England, including the Harry Potter films. Over the years, they’ve added some statues to the square as a tribute to some of the popular films that have premiered there, including Mary Poppins, Paddington Bear, and Mr. Bean.

harry potter statue london The Ultimate List of Harry Potter things to do in London United Kingdom, Europe Harry Potter things to do in London,Harry Potter tour of London,Harry Potter attractions in London,Harry Potter sights in London

In 2023, there was another magical addition — a bronze statue of the boy wizard himself atop his Nimbus 2000. While there’s not much to do here except admire and take a photo, it’s probably worth stopping by in between other Harry Potter attractions in London.

Try your hand at Harry Potter Pub Trivia

It’s going to require a bit of luck (or obsessive planning) to enjoy this activity on a list of Harry Potter things to do in London: participate in Harry Potter pub trivia. But if you’re an avid book or movie fan, you’ll want to try to find an event if you can!

There aren’t currently any pubs that have a regular Harry Potter trivia night that I’ve been able to find. Some pubs that host occasional events that you should check out are: the Market House Brixton, the London Pub , and The Albany London. Also, poke around on Facebook events and Eventbrite to see if you can find one.

Bonus: Day trip to Oxford to visit several filming locations

If you have more time on your ultimate Harry Potter tour of London, consider taking a day trip to nearby Oxford University. In addition to being one of the most famous and prestigious universities in the world, it’s also rife with Harry Potter sights.

Hogwarts Hospital wing Harry Potter filming location in oxford, elaborately carved ceiling and room full of people with large windows

At Oxford, you can visit the real-life inspiration for the Hogwarts great hall as well as some Harry Potter filming locations, like where they filmed the Hogwarts Hospital Wing, a Hogwarts staircase, part of the Hogwarts library, and the courtyard in which Moody transforms Malfoy into a ferret.

Related : To find other places with a Hogwarts feel, take a train up to Manchester, UK for the weekend, and check out the John Ryland’s Library and Chetham’s Library .

For this day trip, you can do a self-guided tour using public transportation ( check for trains using Omio ), or sign up for a third party that will transport you and potentially give you a Harry Potter guided tour of Oxford as well.

There are also tours (I’ve done one myself) that combine transportation to the Harry Potter Studios with a short stop in Oxford to explore.

That concludes my ultimate list of Harry Potter things to do in London. With this information, you should be able to plan an amazing trip and see all there is to do for Potterheads in London.

10 Best Harry Potter Shops in London

Table of Contents

Harry Potter fans often look at London as the center for the Harry Potter universe. With King’s Cross Station and Platform 9 ¾ being the symbolic entry into the Wizarding World, Harry Potter fans and casual readers alike flock to London in the hopes of finding connections to the boy wizard.

There are plenty for Harry Potter lovers to do in London like tours, restaurant experiences, and, of course, shops. The Harry Potter shops around London range from massive official shops to small sections in high street stores.

On my many trips to London, it wasn’t difficult to find Harry Potter items in most souvenir shops.

However, most fans want to head straight to the dedicated Harry Potter stores where you can get personalized items, film replicas, and official Harry Potter merchandise without wasting their precious time in London.

So I’ve put together the complete list of Harry Potter shops in London to help you find the best shops for your wizarding needs.

And for even more Harry Potter fun, see all of my Harry Potter guides .

Exterior of Harry Potter Shop Platform 9 3/4 King's Cross station

Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station

One of the most well-known Harry Potter shops is definitely the Harry Potter Shop at Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station.

Just like the shops at the Studio Tour or the stores in New York or Universal Studios, you can find iconic souvenirs and gifts from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films. You can get wands, robes, stuffed animals, movie replicas, and more.

Some of the best items to buy here are: wands, school robes, Wizarding World treats, and movie prop replicas.

After searching around the store, be sure to get your photo just outside the shop at the iconic photo spot with a sign of Platform 9 ¾ along with a trolley just like Harry’s about halfway through the barrier. The photo spot can get very crowded with long lines, so unless you want to wait, it’s best to get there early to make sure you check off this bucket list item in London .

Taking a photo with your own phone or camera is free, but there are also photographers there to take professional photos that can be purchased as souvenirs as prints on a keyring, magnet, etc. Store staff cannot take photos on your phone or camera, so if you want a group shop, or you’re solo, you may need to ask the person near you in line.

King's Cross Station

How to Get to Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross

The shop is located near platforms 9 and 10 (naturally). The easiest way to enter is from the Kings Boulevard entrance between Kings Cross and St. Pancras.

Or enter from Euston Road and head around Platforms 1-8 and toward the back, following signs for Platforms 9-11. If you’re coming via the Tube, take the Circle line to King’s Cross St. Pancras and follow the signs for King’s Cross Rail Station when exiting.

Platform 9 ¾ Shop Hours:

  • Monday to Saturday: 8am-8pm
  • Sunday: 9am-8pm
  • Bank Holidays: 9am-8p
According to their social media , the shop has closed for refurbishment from Jan 2, 2024 until sometime this spring. However, you can still get some Harry Potter merchandise from the pop-up shop at King’s Cross if you’ll be there while it’s closed.

You don’t need a train ticket to enter the shop or get a photo but if you want to visit the filming location between Platforms 4 and 5 you will need a train ticket.

If you find yourself in London on September 1st, you can also attend the very popular event when the Hogwarts Express and Platform 9 ¾ show up on the Departures board.

King's Cross Station Departures Board featuring the Hogwarts Express train to Hogsmeade on September 1

Though you can’t get on the train to head to Hogwarts, you can make your way to Scotland on a different train and search for all of the Harry Potter filming locations in Scotland for some additional Harry Potter fun.

Exterior of the Harry Potter Shop at London Heathrow Terminal 5-Harry Potter Shops in London

The Harry Potter Shop at Heathrow Airport

If you’re arriving in or departing London by air, the Harry Potter magic continues at Heathrow Airport. The Harry Potter Shop at Terminal 5 is a delightful stop for fans looking to grab some magical essentials before venturing into the heart of the city or before heading to their next destination.

The Heathrow Harry Potter Shop is an official Harry Potter shop that features many of the same items from the Platform 9 ¾ store and the Studio Tour, like wizarding robes, collectible figurines, wands, and more.

This shop is great for a browse before heading off, but unless you find a particularly great deal (there are sometimes great clearance items) or a sold out or exclusive item, I might wait to make my purchases in one of the other shops simply because there is often more selection in other shops.

This shop ensures that your journey into the wizarding world begins the moment you touch down or lets you get in a bit of extra Harry Potter magic before heading off on your next adventure.

House of MinaLima

The House of MinaLima in London’s West End is a must-visit for fans of the Harry Potter films. Founded by graphic designers Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima, who worked on the films, this shop features a stunning collection of graphic art and design from the wizarding world.

Many of the designs featured in the films were created by MinaLima, such as the Daily Prophet newspapers, the products at Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, the Marauder’s Map, the candy wrappers, school books, or Quidditch World Cup posters, and more.

The cozy four-story townhouse showcases an extensive collection of vibrant prints, original artworks, and intricate designs from both Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films.

Each room highlights different aspects such as Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, Daily Prophet newspapers, Marauder’s Map , and much more, with so many props and designs that were barely shown on screen and simply used to give depth to the Wizarding World.

This free museum is a must for any Harry Potter fan in London. It’s open every day from 11AM to 6PM with the last entry at 5:30. It takes about 30-45 minutes to get through the gallery and you can purchase prints of many of the art or other Harry Potter souvenirs.

If you find yourself in Seoul , Osaka , or New York , you can also visit one of their stores there.

Or, buy their illustrated books. The first three books are out as of 2024, and more should be published in the years to come.

Palace Theatre Harry Potter Play

The Harry Potter Shop at The Palace Theatre

If you find yourself wandering through the bustling streets of the West End or are headed to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play, don’t miss the Harry Potter Shop at the Palace Theatre.

In the theatre shop, you can buy play-specific merchandise, as expected, but there are also many items from the wider Wizarding World that can also be purchased here like house-specific gear and clothing.

This is also one of the most unique Harry Potter Shops in London because the merchandise changes depending on where they are in the play. Without giving too much of the plot away, there is a section when Death Eaters and Dark Magic prevail.

During this time, the merchandise in the shop is swapped out from House pride to Dark Magic and Purblood pride with Dark Marks galore. So if you’d like to get your hands on those items, be sure to stick around.

Warner Bros Studio Tour

Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop

The Warner Brothers Studio Tour: The Making of Harry Potter is an immersive experience at Leavesdon Studios for Harry Potter lovers. It involves sets, props, and costumes from the making of the Harry Potter movies in the location where the movies were primarily shot.

If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter movies, this is a no-brainer that you need to visit one of the most popular Harry Potter attractions in London and see where the majority of the magic was created

While you’re there viewing all of the amazing displays, don’t forget to stop in any of their three gift shops to purchase wands, robes, books, collectibles, and more. Plus, get some treats like Butterbeer and Chocolate Frogs to sample.

It’s important to note that you need a valid ticket for that day to enter the gift shops. Tickets can be purchased on Viator, Get Your Guide, or directly through the Studio Tour Website.

(There are some benefits to booking through a tour company, like transportation to the Studios, which is about an hour outside of London.)

Interior of the Warner Bros Studio Tour Railway Shop

The three gift shops inside the studio are:

  • The Studio Shop
  • The Forbidden Forest Shop
  • The Railway Shop

The main studio shop really is the star here, the biggest Harry Potter store in London and features all of your favorite Harry Potter items like wands, clothing, robes, confectionery, stationery, etc. The other two specialty shops have similar items but also exclusive merchandise tailored to the theme of the shop that can’t be purchased in the other stores on the Tour.

The selection of merchandise for sale here is very similar to the other Official Harry Potter shops at Platform 9 ¾ and New York. However, there are Tour specific merchandise and plenty of exclusive merch that make the trip out to the studios worth it.

(But let’s be honest, a trip to the Studios is worth it even if you don’t even make it to the shops.)

Other Harry Potter Shops in London

As expected, there are so many Harry Potter gift shops in London that visitors can choose from. I’ve covered the big stores but how about all those smaller Harry Potter shops? The next few stores are amazing stores here in London that carry a wide selection of Harry Potter merchandise and are a great place for Harry Potter fans to buy even more gear (if they’ haven’t overstuffed their suitcases already).

Exterior of Hamleys Toy Store London- harry potter store london Piccadilly Circus

The world-famous Hamleys toy store on Regent Street has been known for being a toy haven for over 250 years. With multiple stories of toys, elaborate displays, and demonstrations, it’s a kid’s paradise.

But it’s part of our list of London Harry Potter shops because it’s also home to a magical section dedicated to Harry Potter.

Visitors can browse LEGO sets, magical creature plushies,  board games, mugs, wands, and miscellaneous toys. Hamleys is a haven for wizarding enthusiasts of all ages.

Even if you don’t plan to buy anything in Hamleys, it’s worth a stop to browse one of the oldest toy stores in London. Especially if you are visiting with kids, a stop to Hamleys is well worth it.

If you are planning to head to Hamleys, there are a few locations in London. So definitely make sure you’re going to the one on Regent Street between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus.

LEGO Store in Leicester Square

Calling all Lego lovers to the largest Lego store in the world in London. But of course, it’s not on my list because of that, but because of their huge selection of Harry Potter Lego merch.

You can find your favorite merch like giant sets (of Hogwarts, Gringotts, the Burrow), small like the Common Room or classrooms, and character minifigures.

Even if you don’t want to buy any Lego (or can’t fit it in your luggage), a trip to the Lego Store Leicester Square is a must-do in London.

The huge Lego constructions around the store feature iconic London attractions like Big Ben, a subway car, and a red phone booth, as well as scenes from Harry Potter like Gringotts, Diagon Alley, and giant brick characters of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Dumbledor and more.

Kids and adults alike will love looking at these sets and marveling at how they were made.

True Harry Potter, fantasy, or pop culture fans will immediately know the Noble Collection. They’re an officially licensed creator of movie merchandise, particularly collectables, movie props, and finely crafted items.

They sell official Harry Potter merchandise of really great quality. But they also have items and souvenirs from a ton of your favorite series like Game of Thrones, DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, Avatar, and many more.

Some of the most popular items from the Noble Collection are movie prop replicas, action figures, stuffed toys, and for the real Harry Potter lovers, replica wands.

Primark Oxford Street Harry Potter Merch

While heading to a Primark may not feel like the most magical Harry Potter thing to do in London, I assure you that a true fan (or someone looking for deals) won’t want to miss a browse in the Primark on Oxford Street.

While this location used to have a dedicated Harry Potter shop, the Harry Potter merchandise is now in the character section along with other pop culture items like Stranger Things, Barbie, Disney, and Friends.

However, if you’re looking for merchandise, especially Harry Potter clothing and accessories, you need to head to Primark. The Primark Harry Potter merchandise is typically much less expensive than similar items at other shops. Primark also typically has large sales and discounts, so you might be able to get Harry Potter shirts or PJs for only a few pounds.

So if you’re looking for inexpensive Harry Potter merchandise in London, this is by far the best place to go.

Beware that there are 2 Primarks on Oxford Street, and really you may find the same things in each, but the Primark with the original Harry Potter shop is the East shop close to Tottenham Court Road.

House of Spells

Charing Cross Road is home to many amazing bookstores in London , but there is also an unofficial Harry Potter shop called House of Spells. (The shop is just down the street from the Palace Theatre and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play).

This whimsical store has a selection of spell books, magic tricks, and potions for wannabe wizards and witches. Of course, there’s also Harry Potter merchandise, as well as Fantastic Beasts, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones items as well.

Address: 69-71 Charing Cross Rd, London WC2H 0NE

If you did head to the Primark on Oxford Street, head up the road to Marks and Spencer. M&S is a classic British department store that’s worth a browse anyway to pick up essential items while on your visit to London, to grab groceries or pre-made meals for your hotel, or just to get a glimpse into “real” British life.

This large store on Oxford Street also has a great selection of Harry Potter merchandise that is much better priced than some of the larger Harry Potter stores. You can find clothing, some toys, and stuffed animals.

If you’re in the area, the stores at White City and Stratford (both in Westfield Shopping Centers) also carry some Harry Potter items.

This unique establishment combines an art gallery and store. The gallery showcases the exceptional graphic design work of Eduardo Lima and Miraphora Mina, who contributed to the Harry Potter films’ visual elements, including the iconic ‘Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes’ products, the ‘Daily Prophet’ covers, and even the Chocolate Frogs.

The facade of the House of Minalima, one of the Harry Potter shops in London, presents a maroon-coloured storefront and door. The word 'Minalima' is prominently written in green with a golden yellow outline. The door frame matches the maroon colour and features the number '157' on top. The window display showcases an array of books and prominently features a large orange book with the words 'Minalima' and 'Fantastic Beasts.' The window glass bears the words 'shop,' 'gallery,' and 'studio'.

Upon entering the store, you’ll be greeted by shelves adorned with literary classics such as “Peter Pan,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” While Harry Potter books are certainly a highlight, MinaLima’s artistic touch extends to these timeless tales as well.

Please note that they do not accept cash.

As you make your way downstairs, you’ll be greeted by a unique gallery and exhibit. The staircase itself is a work of art, adorned with newspaper print snippets from the Daily Prophet. Once you reach the lower level, you’ll find the Marauder’s Map sprawled across the gallery floor, and various magical props are carefully displayed on glass-topped wooden tables.

Keep an eye out for the iconic Hogwarts acceptance letter prop – it’s a real highlight!

Postcard enthusiasts like me will love their postcard collection. I personally purchased five sets of postcards and two Harry Potter books, the MinaLima Edition (The Philosopher’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets).

A photo of the two Harry Potter books, MinaLima edition. On the left is 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' with a red book cover and spine featuring 'JK Rowling Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' text. The cover is designed and illustrated by MinaLima and adorned with intricate gold borders, house logos in the corners, a drawing of Hogwarts school, and silhouettes of main characters. On the right is 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' with a green cover and spine. The cover boasts golden borders, house logos, a flying Ford Anglia at the top, Hogwarts Express at the bottom, and 'JK Rowling Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' in the middle.

The postcards are impressively thick and crafted from durable, high-quality materials. They are larger than the standard 4 x 6 postcard size and feature vibrant colours. As for the books, they were absolutely fantastic. The interactive aspects, such as pop-outs and pull-outs, enhances the reading experience, not to mention the playful and whimsical illustrations.

If you’re planning a trip to the incredible Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the West End, why not make your day that bit more magical by planning some other activities? London has plenty of wizard Harry Potter -themed fun on offer.

A trip to the Warner Brothers Studios where they filmed all of the Harry Potter movies is a must for any budding Gryffindor (or other house of the sorting hat’s choice!), as is potion-making at The Cauldron and a visit to the official shop at King’s Cross Station.

Book Harry Potter and the Cursed Child tickets on London Theatre.

Warner Brothers Studio Tour

If you’ve ever dreamt of walking into the Great Hall at Hogwarts, shopping in Diagon Alley, or taking a trip on Hagrid’s motorbike, then you need to make a bee-line for Warner Brothers Studios. There you’ll get to see behind the scenes of the smash-hit Harry Potter film franchise, from the astonishing sets to costumes, props, and more.

Begin your adventure just like Harry, Ron, and Hermione did by heading to Platform 9¾, where you’ll find the iconic Hogwarts Express steam engine. You can pose with your own luggage trolley and vanish right into the wall.

Plus there’s everything from Dumbledore’s office to Gringotts Wizarding Bank, a Nimbus 2000, Voldemort’s snake Nagini, the Ministry of Magic – and you can even buy a cup of butterbeer.

Address: Studio Tour Drive, Leavesden, Hertfordshire

Book Warner Brothers Studio Tour tickets on London Theatre.

It was at the Reptile House at the zoo that Harry Potter began to realise he might have magical powers. In the first book, Harry talks to a caged boa constrictor and, after his horrible cousin Dudley elbows him to the ground, he accidentally makes the glass front of the tank disappear – allowing the snake to escape.

If you go to London Zoo, you can head to the Reptile House where they filmed this scene in the film with Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry – although you’ll find the enclosure is actually home to a black mamba. Still, it’s a sssss-super trip.

Address: Regent’s Park, London NW1

The Wizard Walk of London

This is a fantastic way to explore this great city – but with a Harry Potter twist! Join an expert guide to potter around London while exploring various sites that were either filming locations or which inspired JK Rowling in her magical creation.

For example, visit the building that became wizarding pub The Leaky Cauldron in the first film, as well as Clink Prison Museum, the model for the terrifying Azkaban. St Paul’s Cathedral made an appearance in the third movie, while the Millennium Bridge came to a sticky end in the sixth film, and Borough Market had a cameo when Harry was catching the Knight Bus.

Address: Meeting point outside Pizza Express, 20-22 Leadenhall Market, London EC3

The Cauldron

Ever thought that if you got into potions class at Hogwarts, you would definitely rock it? Here’s your chance to find out at specialist Dalston bar The Cauldron. Sign up for The Cauldron London Potion Making Experience and you’ll receive a wizard’s robe, a wand, and a spell-binding masterclass.

Using your magical powers, plus some top tips in mixology by the expert Potion Masters, you’ll enter an enchanted forest and learn to concoct otherworldly elixirs in your cauldron – otherwise known as delicious molecular cocktails. Cheers!

Address: 5D Stoke Newington Road, London N16

House of MinaLima

This charming gallery in Soho is dedicated to the visual art of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies. Run by the designers who actually worked on both, Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima, it’s a real passion project – and a thrilling glimpse at how the world of the films was dreamed up.

The gallery’s free exhibition has four levels showcasing prints and graphics that were created for the movies, as well as beautiful books and art prints that you can purchase. You’ll also see familiar props on display, such as the Hogwarts letters with their red seal and pages from The Daily Prophet .

Address: 157 Wardour Street, London W1

The Harry Potter Shop at Platform 9¾

Stock up on all the essential Harry Potter merchandise, treats, and presents for fellow superfans at the official store, which is located – of course – at King’s Cross Station. Start by getting your photograph taken as you whisk your trolley through the magical wall, then head inside for a wizard shopping experience.

Here you’ll find everything from bespoke Harry Potter bags to T-shirts, caps, homeware, jewellery, and more. You can even select a hand-crafted wand, order a personalised Hogwarts robe, or raid the sweet trolley. Chocolate frog, anyone?

Address: King’s Cross Station, London N1

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Now you’re ready for the ultimate Harry Potter experience: the phenomenal play in the West End, which continues Rowling’s wizarding saga following the book series. Harry is now grown up and it’s his son Albus who is heading off to Hogwarts, where he befriends Scorpius Malfoy and inevitably gets into trouble as he battles dark forces.

As brilliant as the books and movies are, there’s nothing quite like the jaw-dropping wonder of seeing magic happening right in front of you, whether it’s someone transforming after drinking Polyjuice Potion or the Time-Turner at work. You get the chance to revisit all your favourite characters, and meet new friends.

Avoid These Tourist Traps In London And Visit These Destinations Instead

O ne of the world's greatest cities, London is packed with tourist attractions so impressive that you'll want to add them all to your itinerary. From the Tower of London to Buckingham Palace to the Churchill War Rooms, the list of unmissable landmarks seems endless. Don't worry, though -- it's possible to visit most of them in just a two-day trip . When you're on a tight schedule, it's important to avoid time- and money-wasting tourist traps in favor of visiting sites that are worthy of your attention.

Whether it's an overrated and overpriced wax museum, a kitschy dungeon experience, or a super crowded viewpoint, there are many places to avoid visiting in the U.K.'s heady capital. The confusing part? Some of them top multiple lists of must-see attractions. That's where we come in.

As someone who lived in this captivating English city for six years, I have first-hand knowledge of the biggest tourist traps to avoid when traveling to London. Plus, I can offer more impressive (and often less costly) destinations to visit instead. Don't want to take my word for it? No problem. I combined my first-hand knowledge with reviews and suggestions from other locals to create this list.

Skip Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tours And Ride A London Bus

While hop-on hop-off bus tours can be a convenient way to explore a big city, they often come with a hefty price tag. If the tour is based in London, you can expect to pay over $50 per adult for a one-day pass. Instead, board a London bus, which will cost less than $7 for a day of travel. Bus fare for one ride is about $2 and the daily cap is under $7. To pay for their ride, visitors must use a contactless card or an Oyster Card, the visitor's version of which can be purchased online and mailed to your home before you leave.

Double-decker London buses offer spectacular city views, with many routes passing right by London's landmark attractions. One of our faves is the historic Routemaster Bus 15, which we suggest boarding at the Tower of London. Hop on at Great Tower Street (Stop TT) and ride west to Charing Cross Station. Be sure to sit up top for the best views along this heritage route -– you can't miss St. Paul's Cathedral and Trafalgar Square.

Bus 24 is another great option for sightseers. Hop on at Victoria Station and ride it to Camden High Street. Along the way, you'll pass Westminster Abbey, the Horse Guard's Parade, Trafalgar Square, and Downing Street. Grab a bite at Camden Market when you disembark or stay on until you reach Hampstead Heath where you can catch unbeatable views of the city.

Skip Madame Tussauds And Visit Buckingham Palace

It may tout itself as a top London attraction, but Madame Tussauds would be more honest if they said they were the top rip-off site. Booking in advance will save some money -- the standard online rate for an adult begins at just over $47 versus the walk-up price, which begins at almost $60. But that's still a lot of quid to dish out for wandering around an overcrowded and noisy space filled with okay-ish wax replicas of A- and B-list celebs. Yes, it's fun to take photos with the royal family and fool friends into thinking you met them IRL, but is it worth it? We don't think so.

Instead, we suggest visiting Buckingham Palace for a potential King Charles III sighting. Realistically, you probably won't spy a royal outside the palace, but at least you'll see a historic monument up close. Celebrities more your thing? Book a reservation at one of the city's most popular restaurants. Chiltern Firehouse has hosted acting greats Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper as well as soccer superstar David Beckham. 34 Mayfair is another good bet for great food and celeb spotting. Imelda Staunton and royal family members have all eaten here.

Skip Changing Of The Guard And Visit The Queen's Gallery

While you should add Buckingham Palace to your list of must-see London tourist attractions, you may want to avoid a visit during the Changing of the Guard. This formal ceremony marks the change between the old guard (on-duty soldiers) and new guard (soldiers taking over duty) for the royal palaces. Marching with a band from Wellington Barracks to the Palace, the new guard will arrive at the palace at about 10:45 a.m. A well-known event, this is a big tourist draw, which means you can expect hefty crowds queuing up an hour or more in advance, as well as pickpockets who arrive to take advantage of the chaotic atmosphere. This tourist trap, which takes place every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, is one you'll be happy to miss. Sadly, watching this famed ceremony these days feels more like witnessing an overhyped marching band than it does an esteemed historic ritual.

Instead, ditch the crowds and glimpse art from the Royal Collection in the Queen's Gallery or visit the Royal Mews , where you can see the royal stables and the 260-year-old Gold State Coach used at King Charles III's Coronation. The Mews are open Thursday through Monday from early March to early November. Neighboring St. James Park is another interesting place to visit. One of London's famed Royal Parks, it is bordered by three palaces and boasts a fabulous view of Buckingham Palace in particular.

Skip Platform 9 ¾ At King's Cross Station And Visit Warner Brothers Studio Tour London

If you're traveling with a Harry Potter-obsessed kid, you may want to visit Platform 9 ¾ at King's Cross Station. But if you're alone, or with other adults who couldn't care less, we advise you to skip this overrated tourist trap. If you're already planning to be in King's Cross Station and have time to scope out this attraction, that's one thing; but if you're traveling there with the sole purpose of visiting this site, think twice.

Set between platforms 9 and 10 (obvs) this point of interest includes nothing but a brick wall denoted with a sign. Stuck into the wall is part of a trolley loaded with fake suitcases and an empty owl cage. Those hoping for a quick photo and to score some Potter swag will be pleased;  the Harry Potter Shop at Platform 9 ¾ is open daily, even on bank holidays, and it sells everything from wands to clothes to makeup.

For those who'd rather have an unforgettable and truly magical Harry Potter experience, though, head to Warner Brothers Studio Tour London -- The Making of Harry Potter in nearby Leavesden. Instead of merely looking at a wall, visitors can board the Hogwarts Express, "fly" on a broomstick, walk through the Great Hall, and explore the Forbidden Forest. Step foot in Diagon Alley, try a Butterbeer, or check out some of the film's famous props and costumes. You won't be sorry you visited.

Skip London Dungeon And Visit The Tower Of London

No matter how much the kids beg you to visit the London Dungeon, stay strong and just say "no." This kitschy tourist trap is a waste of your hard-earned money (tickets start at over $37 for adults) and it's so hokey you'll roll your eyes more times than you can count on both hands. This pitiful attraction is peppered with costume-clad actors who like to scream and cackle and its two rides (the Drop Dead: Drop Ride and the Tyrant Boat Ride) will make you wish you were at Walt Disney World; even "It's a Small World" would be more enjoyable. An escape room has also been added to increase the venue's income stream –- it costs $153 for a private game for six people.

Want a historic experience with a side of chills? Head to the Tower of London instead. There, you can tour the Torture at the Tower Exhibition, where you can get up close and personal with the stretching machine (a.k.a. the rack) and other ancient torture devices in the Lower Wakefield Tower. The Bloody Tower is another point of interest you won't want to miss. The most infamous prison on the grounds, this is where you'll learn about the alleged murder of two young princes -– Edward V and his little brother Richard –- by their uncle, Richard III.

Skip The London Bridge Experience And Visit Churchill War Rooms

Looking for a good spooking? Do yourself a favor and skip The London Bridge Experience. A tourist trap designed to bring the city's macabre history to life with the help of actors with a penchant for jump scares, you can expect to meet zombie-like versions of ghastly heavyweights Jack the Ripper and William Wallace during your visit. Tickets cost about $37 for the experience, which takes anywhere between 35 and 50 minutes. That means you could be spending more than $1 a minute. Entry fees also include a trip to the London Tombs, deemed the U.K.'s "best scare attraction," according to their site . Zombified dentists, doctors, and creepy clowns await visitors in the lower vaults of this venue, ready to pounce and scream in your face.

Instead, we suggest visiting the Churchill War Rooms. Also located underground, this fascinating historic facility is part of the Imperial War Museums. Located in the basement of Whitehall, this once-secret complex was used by former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, top government ministers, and military planners to conduct meetings and develop plans during the country's war effort during World War II. Known as the Cabinet War Rooms, this clandestine spot was used daily during the war, until August 16, 1945. Or experience that stomach drop feeling by walking the glass floors at Tower Bridge. Set nearly 138 feet above the Thames, the views are both terrifying and impressive. Tickets cost under $16 per adult.

Skip The Sherlock Holmes Museum And Visit The Sherlock Holmes Pub

We don't recommend visiting the Sherlock Holmes Museum unless you have a detective-obsessed kid who doesn't realize that the famed character is fictional. Set inside a Georgian townhouse at 221B Baker Street in Marylebone, this four-story museum has been open since 1990. Inside lie antique furnishings mentioned in the books and pretty creepy-looking mannequins. Tickets cost over $21 which isn't exorbitant, especially for London, but considering you won't be there long (the museum's quite small), this seems a bit of a waste.

Instead, head to The Sherlock Holmes  in St James. Self-described as a "Victorian-themed public house," this watering hole features a recreated version of the famed fictional detective's apartment upstairs. The entire pub is dotted with references to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved books, making it easy to feel as if you're within the pages. Plus, there's a beer garden –- the museum certainly doesn't have one of those.

Skip The SEA Life London Aquarium And Visit The London Zoo

You'll find everything you'd expect to see at the SEA Life London Aquarium. From penguins to sharks to turtles, they're all there. And as far as aquariums go, this is a pretty good one. But when you're in one of the world's greatest cities that lies on the banks of a river, not an ocean, there are plenty of better things to see. Standard tickets to the Sea Life London Aquarium cost $24 online or $51 at the door. Again, that's pretty on par for London attractions, however, it's a steep price to pay for a tourist trap.

Instead, visit London Zoo in Regent's Park. The oldest scientific zoo in the world, this family-friendly attraction was opened in 1828 for fellows of the Zoological Society of London. In 1847, the public was invited to visit. Today, the zoo is home to 14,0000 animals including a giant, 425-pound silverback gorilla, Sumatran tigers, and Linne's two-toed sloths. While tickets aren't cheap (an adult will cost about $40 to visit on a weekday), it's easy to spend a whole day here. Or, if you aren't willing to part with that much cash, visit the smaller, and lesser-known, Battersea Park Children's Zoo . Adult tickets are more reasonably priced, at $16. There are over 100 animals at this little zoo, including wallabies, meerkats, otters, and lemurs, and plenty of opportunities to interact with animals like coatis, donkeys, and goats.

Skip The Shard And Visit Level 10 At The Tate Modern

There's no denying that The Shard is impressive. In fact, it's one of the most spectacular buildings in the world . The viewing platform was opened by the queen on February 1, 2013, with the main restaurants (Aqua, Oblix, and Hutong) following suit that summer. Set across the Thames from another bucket-list-worthy London building, the Gherkin, this engineering masterpiece towers 1,016 feet above the city and boasts 11,000 glass panels.

Dubbed a "vertical city," there's plenty to do inside, like spend serious coin on a meal with a view, or zip up one of the 44 elevators to the viewing platform. That 360-degree view will cost you, though -- about $36, or more if you add a glass of champagne. And if you visit on a day that's rainy or misty (honestly, London is often both of those things), you're basically paying for a ride in a lift.

Instead, head to Level 10 at Tate Modern, where you can enjoy a drink or snack (including sandwiches and salads) while ogling the impressive view of the Thames, St. Paul's Cathedral, the BT Tower, and Blackfriar's Bridge. You won't have to pay a thing unless you choose to grab a bite or a warm cuppa. The Skygarden at 20 Fenchurch Street is another must-visit for a free skyline vista. The highest public garden in London, this leafy space is as stunning as its views are remarkable.

Skip The London Eye And Visit Hamstead Heath

We are well aware that some of you will disagree with this addition to our list of tourist traps to avoid when traveling to London, but hear us out. Yes, the London Eye is iconic. Yes, it offers fantastic views of the city. And yes, it's deemed a top London attraction you won't want to miss . That said, visiting this popular landmark can cause more headaches than enjoyment. First created as a temporary point of interest, this 443-foot-tall, "cantilevered observation wheel" is the largest of its kind in the world, according to its website . And if you catch a ride on one of its 32 pods on a sunny day, you can see up to 25 miles in all directions. The problem is that thousands of others have the same idea, which means you could stand in line for more than two hours on a particularly busy day. Standard tickets start at over $32 online or more than $57 for a walk-up.

Instead, visit Hampstead Heath for a unique city view you probably never knew existed. Parliament Hill stands over 321 feet tall, making it one of the highest natural points in the city. If the weather is ideal, you can see to the Gherkin, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Houses of Parliament. Speaking of the Gherkin, it's another great spot to enjoy unparalleled views. Grab a drink and snack at Iris Bar at Searcys at the Gherkin , then relax with a side order of stunning vistas.

Skip Harrods And Visit Peter Jones And Liberty

Harrods is to London as the Colosseum is to Rome -– a historic icon that's become synonymous with the city. The world's most famous luxury department store, this Knightsbridge institution is impossible to miss -– it's eight floors tall and an entire block long, not to mention over one million square feet in size. Inside, you'll find 20 restaurants, a beauty salon, a bank, and 300 separate departments selling over 5,000 brands. You'll also see price tags so high you might suffer sticker shock. Due to its notoriety, Harrods is often packed with tourists, making it difficult to enjoy the plush interior.

If you're hoping to shop during your London holiday, there are plenty of excellent places to visit instead. Sloane Square is home to the Peter Jones & Partners department store. Owned by John Lewis, this vast shop is filled with enough enticing merchandise that you'll find it tough to leave empty-handed. Grab a bite at The Top Floor Restaurant (on the 6 th floor) for captivating views of Chelsea and beyond.

Liberty is another recognizable landmark located on Regent Street. A heritage-listed building; this stunning Tudor-style store is as beautiful outside as it is indoors. Built between 1922 and 1924, it is worth a visit, if only to admire the impressive architectural features (the price tags here are also quite shocking).

Our Ranking Methodology

Having lived in London for six years with two young children, I visited pretty much every tourist attraction the city has. From renowned points of interest like the Tower of London to remarkable museums, I've seen the top sightseeing destinations multiple times, including many kitschy tourist traps I wish I'd skipped. To create this list, I used my experiences at these attractions to determine which locales are tourist traps that should be avoided and I included alternatives that are more than worthy of your time and money. I also consulted reviews from other locals and travelers, as well as their tips, to ensure the list is solid.
