MTA Unveils New All-In-One Mobile App for Trip Planning and Service Information

App includes schedules and service alerts for subways, buses, lirr and metro-north  , public can sign up for app; currently in beta testing.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that its new MTA app is available for download. The app is currently in BETA testing and will eventually succeed the MYmta app. The app features schedules, service alerts and more for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad all in one place. Users can also book Access-A-Ride trips and see elevator and escalator outages at stations throughout the subway system.

“If we want more customers to use public transit, providing travel tools that are easy and intuitive is key,” said MTA Acting Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara . “The new MTA app accomplishes just that, connecting riders to the information they need in one or two taps.”

Additional features in the Beta version of the new MTA app include:

Plan a trip to see recommended routes and check schedules for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North, PATH and AirTrain.

Get service alerts and see planned and unplanned service changes and best ways to get around.

Save favorite routes and stops for quick viewing of arrival times.

Live bus tracking to see where a bus is located that is approaching a stop, check when it will arrive, and follow it throughout its trip, including instant information on how many stops and minutes away a bus is.

Real-time on-board crowding for railroads.

Book Access-A-Ride trips, find pick up and drop off times for trips, and view trip history.

Improved search making it easier to see which search results are MTA stations and the services offered there at a glance.

Dynamic strip maps and station views indicate the service that is running at any given time.

The app was co-developed with Axon Vibe, a smart mobility platform provider and former winner of the MTA’s Transit Tech Lab accelerator. Utilizing this smart transit technology MTA app users will also be able to opt into sharing their location data to receive smart, real-time, location-based notifications for their individual journey.

The aggregated data will be available to the MTA to better understand ridership and mobility patterns around the New York metropolitan area. This information will assist with improving transit operations to meet the needs of customers and developing innovative tools to help make it easier for riders to plan for transit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This effort was supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

“Axon Vibe is thrilled to continue supporting the MTA with our smart transit technology, aimed at promoting sustainable travel and increasing public transit ridership,” said Roman Oberli, CEO of Axon Vibe .

The app will replace MYmta when it becomes available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store later this year. Riders will not need to download a new app as it will automatically update on a mobile device if MYmta is already installed.

Members of the public can sign up for access to the app here .

MTA Launches New One Stop Rail App Combining LIRR and Metro-North Trip Planning and Ticket Purchasing

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) launched a totally revamped app – named TrainTime – the new one-stop app for commuter rail customers in the region. The app replaces MTA eTix and adds the functionality of previously separate TrainTime apps for Long Island  Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, merging ticket purchasing, trip planning, real-time train location data.

Access your tickets purchased in eTix using your existing account information — or create a new account using your Apple ID, Google account, or a text message.

Making the app easier and more inviting to use, TrainTime users can log in using their Apple ID, Google account, or a text message, and purchase tickets using Apple Pay. These new features complement features that are already popular with MTA app users, including a seat availability tracking and in-app chat with customer service.

Mobile Tickets on TrainTime

TrainTime is the first MTA app where ticket purchasing and trip planning live on the same app. Previously customers would have to use two apps to plan their trip—TrainTime to trip plan, and MTA eTix to purchase tickets.

Now, a customer can search for their train and purchase their ticket in seconds. When looking up their train, a “Buy” ticket button will appear on the screen. From there, a customer can log in using Apple, Google or their phone number and purchase their ticket. Once a ticket is purchased, customers will see the button show “Activate” as their departure time approaches, or “Wallet” if their trip is in the future.

Previous eTix users should use their existing account information to access tickets they have already purchased.

Real-Time Train Movement and Seat Availability Tracking

A core feature of the revamped app is the real-time train tracking map. In preparation for the app’s rollout, GPS sensors were installed on the entire LIRR and Metro-North fleet. When looking up a train a customer can get the exact position of their train in real-time. Once a customer gets on the train, they can continue to track their movement.

The real-time train tracking is complemented by the popular seat availability tracker that the LIRR initially debuted in 2020. A customer can check the exact position of their train while on the train, while also knowing their exact car number and monitor that car’s capacity.

In-App Customer Service

In addition to the many social  channels, customers can already go to for assistance, TrainTime meets riders where they are, providing in-app chat with customer service representatives for both railroads for the first time. Users can “Chat with us” on the “Status” tab.

Cross-Rail Trip Planning

The debut of TrainTime allows for a future feature of cross-rail trips when Grand Central Madison opens later this year.

A customer that will travel from Long Island to Metro-North region, and vice versa, will be able to plan their full trip and purchase their ticket without having to use multiple apps.

MTA Launches Online Trip Planner for Customers Planning New Grand Central Madison Commutes

MTA Logo

Draft Schedules Released in Early June Feature Increases in Peak AM & PM Service

More options for reverse commuters, view mta’s grand central madison trip planner.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today introduced an online trip planner at gcmtrips.mta.info to allow Long Island Rail Road customers to plan trips to and from Grand Central Madison, Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal or any other stations once Grand Central Madison opens later this year. To use the trip planner, a customer can input station of origin, destination, time of travel, day of week and the planner will suggest itineraries and transfer opportunities.

The creation of the interactive tool complements draft timetables for every LIRR branch that were released in early June showing proposed systemwide service following the opening of the LIRR’s terminal at Grand Central Madison this year. The LIRR will hold a series of virtual public information sessions starting next week to gather public input on the timetables.

“The online trip planner will help LIRR customers see the many new travel opportunities that the opening of Grand Central Madison will bring to the Long Island Rail Road,” said Catherine Rinaldi, Interim President of MTA Long Island Rail Road and President of MTA Metro-North Railroad . "Once the public has an opportunity to plan their new commute, they will see how many new travelling opportunities the new, refreshed schedules provide to our beautiful new Grand Central Madison Terminal, revitalized Penn Station and our Brooklyn hub at Atlantic Avenue.”

“It’s important to show, not only Long Islanders, but everyone in the region that the opening of Grand Central Madison creates numerous opportunities to travel by commuter rail,” said MTA Chief Customer Officer Sarah Meyer. “We strongly encourage customers to use the trip planner to create their new commute and give us feedback at the public information sessions that start next week.”

Systemwide Service Increases Mean More Trains During AM Rush, PM Rush, Reverse Peak, Off-Peak

The timetables propose to increase the overall number of LIRR trains by 40 percent. The number of morning rush hour trains would increase slightly more than 40 percent and the number of afternoon/evening rush hour trains would increase by nearly 65 percent. Thanks to the new terminal and the LIRR Main Line Expansion Project (Third Track), reverse peak service would dramatically improve to Ronkonkoma, Huntington and all intermediate stops, as well as from Brooklyn, where service to Jamaica is increasing.

The timetables will improve the spacing of trains on many branches, reducing large gaps in service. During the off-peak hours of middays, evenings, and weekends, Huntington and Ronkonkoma will both have service to Manhattan every 30 minutes, with weekend Ronkonkoma Branch service doubling with the completion of the Double Track Project, that introduced 13 miles of a brand-new second track between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma, and the Main Line Expansion Project.

On the West Hempstead Branch, trains will run every hour during off-peak periods, twice as frequently as they do today, and the need to change trains at Valley Stream is eliminated. Stations in Queens will see service increases throughout the day, in both peak and off-peak periods.

"Change at Jamaica" Evolves

To reduce delays that can occur currently at Jamaica Station while trains wait for a connecting train, and to allow the LIRR to move significantly more trains through the station, trains will no longer have scheduled connections at Jamaica.

Manhattan-bound customers at rush hour on most branches, and all day on the busiest branches, will find plenty of options to take them to the terminal of their choosing without the need to change trains. For those who do need to transfer, all trains will now make station stops at Jamaica to reduce wait times. Once the schedules are finalized in the fall, the TrainTime app will be updated to provide transfer recommendations.

Service to Brooklyn to Increase by 28%

In Brooklyn, trains will run approximately every 12 minutes in both directions during peak hours and every 20 minutes during off-peak hours for an overall 28% increase in daily trains. Every train will make stops at Nostrand Avenue and East New York. Most Brooklyn trains will originate and terminate at Jamaica using the new Platform F, but the LIRR will retain some through service with peak and off-peak trains on the West Hempstead Branch and peak trains on the Babylon and Hempstead Branches. Most customers on the Far Rockaway and Hempstead Branches, whose trains currently primarily serve Brooklyn, will now have direct service to Manhattan all day.

LIRR to Hold Information Sessions on New Timetables

The LIRR will hold four virtual customer information sessions about the proposed new timetables at the following dates and times:

Thursday, June 23 -- 6 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, June 30 -- 6 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, July 7 -- 6 to 7 p.m.

Following these information sessions, a virtual public meeting — where the public will have the chance to offer comments on the timetables — will be held on  Wednesday, July 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

More information about the information sessions, the virtual public hearing, and how to register to participate are posted at  https://new.mta.info/grandcentralmadison

FACT SHEET:

Upcoming and on-demand webinars, lirr unveils real-time seating availability, trip planning tech.

March 30, 2021 • METRO Staff • Bookmark +

Changes to digital screens, station announcements, and the LIRR's Train Time app will detail...

Changes to digital screens, station announcements, and the LIRR's Train Time app will detail real-time seat availability for approaching trains by a customer’s location.

New York MTA’s Long Island Rail Road  President Phil Eng announced a slate of improvements to real-time seating availability and trip accessibility information for riders, in addition to new service enhancements.

The new service timetables , which went into effect on March 29, restore the agency’s weekday levels of service that had been in place from Jan. 25 through March 5.

The new real-time passenger information will be available via platform screens, platform audio announcements, and the agency’s Train Time app. Details on these enhancements are listed below.

Platform Screens:  Digital signs on platforms show a diagram of the arriving train, seating capacity in each car, and the observer’s relative position within the train. Customers can use this information to walk to a different part of the platform to find a car with fewer people. At approximately 20 stations with color screens, that information is color coded in accordance with guidelines established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). At approximately 90 stations with monochrome screens, that information is displayed graphically.

Audio Announcements:   When a train is approaching, the automated arrival announcements include statements to the effect of: “The 7:15 train to Penn Station will arrive on Track 1. There are more seats towards the [rear/middle/front] of the train.”

LIRR Train Time App Becomes More Detailed:  The LIRR Train Time app now shows the number of passengers in each car of every train, refreshed every 15 seconds, along with the observer’s relative position within the train. (When it was first launched last year, the app provided a four-tiered color-coded system of green, yellow, orange, or red to show a general sense of seating availability. This color coding remains in place even with the increased detail now being provided.)

Trip Accessibility Information:  LIRR Train Time app users will now be able to locate elevators, escalators, and ramps on both origin and destination platforms, giving customers the ability to map out a trip in advance and position themselves in the ideal spot.  The app also features enhanced screen reader support for blind or low-vision users by reading out loud what is on the screen and adapt the speech output to the speed or volume they choose.

How It Works

The features on screens, announcements, and the app are all powered by the same data system which uses sensors that can determine how many passengers are on board a train at any given moment. The LIRR securely transmits and processes this data, and seamlessly provides it back out to customers in real time.

All of the latest station and app features were built entirely in-house, led by the LIRR innovation team and implemented by LIRR Communications (BRS) and MTA's information technology department (TCU).

The approximately 70,000 customers who already have TrainTime installed will receive an automatic update so that they can use the new features. The app remains available for free download through the App Store and Google Play Store.
