Deep Purple and Yes Kick Off 2024 Tour: Set Lists, Videos

Deep Purple and Yes launched their joint 2024 tour on Wednesday night in Hollywood, Florida. See set lists and videos below.

The =1 More Time tour celebrates Deep Purple’s latest studio album, also called =1 , and 50 years of “Smoke on the Water.” (Frontman Ian Gillan, in a recent interview with UCR, said he’d have preferred if the tour was called “Unleashed – not that it matters. It’s a Deep Purple tour and we’re happy.”)

Yes’ latest tour follows 2023’s Mirror to the Sky , but the group stuck with old favorites. Their most recent release was an expanded 4CD or limited-edition white vinyl anniversary box set of 1994’s Talk .

Sharing the stage wasn’t always so easy. Deep Purple and Yes were both on the bill at the National Jazz and Blues Festival in 1970 , a precursor to the U.K.s Reading Festival held at Plumpton in East Sussex, England – and both assumed they’d be the closing act.

Promoter Jack Barrie from London’s legendary Marquee Club stepped in to negotiate a truce. “Jack said, ‘Guys, would you mind going on a bit earlier? I don’t want to push you, but it would help me and it would help the crowd,'” Ian Gillan remembered.

He said Deep Purple responded, “Yeah, sure. Okay, no worries.” But then co-founding Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore set fire to his amplifiers on stage – causing an explosion .

Joint North American dates with Deep Purple and Yes continue through September, with key stops in Houston, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and Montreal, among others. Deep Purple appears as a solo act on Aug. 19 in Oklahoma. Deep Purple

Deep Purple has had ample opportunities to hush itself, if you will, over the years.

The London-formed hard rock troupe has gone through the kinds of lineup changes during its 46 years that would have debilitated most bands. With Irish guitarist Simon McBride joining in two years ago to replace Steve Morse after an 18-year tenure, the Purple gang is on its Mark IXth lineup. Only drummer Ian Paice has been a fixture since 1968.

“When Simon came in, the tour went very well,” Glover adds. “Early in the tour we said, ‘Hey, we should make an album as soon as we can.’ So that’s what we did last year.” Like its four predecessors, the 13-songs set was produced by Bob Ezrin, and the songs took shape via the band jamming together in Nashville rather than coming in with prepared material.

“That’s the way we work,” Glover explains. “It’s like a blank canvas when you go in the studio, all you’ve got to do is fill it with noises. The songs aren’t written; they evolve from personalities and ideas. Someone starts a riff or something and we’re like, ‘That’s good. How about if you go to an F here…or a B flat?’ Once we’ve got the instrumental part, then Ian Gillan and I figure out what’s going on top, the words and the tunes. Obviously, they don’t just appear for no reason. We work at it.”

The approach only changed once, says Glover, who’s in the process of writing a memoir. “When we had the reunion (in 1984) it didn’t go back to that — maybe it couldn’t, you know?” he remembers. “But as soon as Steve Morse joined the band (in 1994), guess what? It went back to that, which was great. For a band like us, that’s the only way to work.”

The process continues to be a welcome kind of “challenge,” according to Glover, who points to =1 tracks such as the album-closing “Bleeding Obvious” as particularly challenging and requiring “a lot of work” to get right. Meanwhile the opening track, “Show Me,” had a particularly interesting gestation that sounds like a rock n’ roll warrior story that could have happened during the ’70s as much as the 2020s.

“We were all invited to Alice Cooper’s 75th birthday party with (Ezrin),” Glover recalls. “We finished early and Simon and Don (Airey) and I went to a bar and hit the tequila a bit too much and I fell over and really hurt my thumb. The next morning was the last day of writing sessions and my thumb was swollen all up and I couldn’t play anything. So I said, ‘Excuse me, lads, I have to get it checked out in a hospital or something,’ which I did. In the meantime, the idea of ‘Show Me’ had started, but it was later on when we worked it out. I couldn’t imagine what Ian would sing over that until I was in Portugal with him and he just attacked it and found the right tune and everything, and we had the song.”

“We worked with them years ago in the ’70s,” Glover says. “We did some festivals together — one in particular called the Plumpton Jazz and Blues Festival in ’71. Ian Gillan and I had only been in the band a couple of months at that point. There was an argument about who’d be closing the show, and they won the argument and were closing the show. Ritchie (Blackmore, Purple’s original guitarist) set fire to his amplifiers and made them explode on stage. So they were delayed a lot and weren’t very happy with that.”

But, Glover says, bygones are bygones and he expects nothing but friendly relations this summer. “We’ve met them since. They’re a great band. We saw (Yes guitarist) Steve Howe a couple years ago. We got on, no hard feelings. I don’t know which state they’re in now, which combination of musicians they have, so I’ll be happily surprised.”

With guitarist Simon McBride replacing Steve Morse during the spring of 2022, the “Smoke on the Water” hard rock stalwart — Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2016 — is on its Mk. IXth lineup, albeit with frontman Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover from the iconic Mk. II. (Only drummer Ian Paice has been a fixture since 1968). Fourteen members have been part of the Purple gang over the years, but with just one lengthy hiatus (1976-84) the band has continued to, as the song says, burn.

Last month Deep Purple released its 23rd studio album, “=1,” its fifth with producer Bob Ezrin and first to feature McBride. The 13-song set debuted at No. 19 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart, and at No. 1 in Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. Now the quintet is back on the road, going toe to toe with countrymen and fellow Rock Hall inductees Yes for evenings filled with bona fide rock classics…

* Glover, 78, says Deep Purple learned early on how not to be derailed by changes to the band’s lineup. “We can’t stop. We love what we do; that’s the bottom line. And we’ve had the opportunity to carry on. Most bands don’t get that opportunity…well, I don’t follow bands that much, but certainly for us that’s been the case. I’m in my late 70s — we all are except for the new guitarist, who’s in his early 40s. He’s infused the band with a lot of energy. We may have been lacking a little — but not much, I don’t think.”

* As is its practice, Deep Purple created the songs for “=1” during studio jams rather than from finished songs. “That’s the way we work,” Glover explains. “That’s what we’ve done since day one. Songs aren’t written; they evolve from personalities and ideas. Someone starts a riff or something, ‘That’s good. How about if you go to an F there…or a B-flat.’ The great thing about this band is in the early days before ‘deep Purple in Rock’ we realized that the music came from playing, not from the head, therefore we should all share the credits. And that’s what we did in the early days, shared everything, no matter who came up with what idea. It was freeing in a way. No back-biting. No jealousy. Very healthy.”

* New guitarist McBride, who hails from Northern Ireland, was no stranger to Deep Purple. “(Keyboardist) Don Airey has a band he tours with, and he’s has Simon in his band for the last decade or so,” Glover says. “When they played near me I went along and got on stage and jammed. Ian Gillan did a Rock Meets Classic Tour and his band was the Don Airey band, so he worked with Simon. So when we had this unfortunate situation, there was no question. We didn’t even think about anyone else; he seemed the only choice. I don’t know how much of a Purple fan he was; obviously he was aware of us. He’s 43, so he grew up in a different, but that doesn’t make any difference. He’s got a sense of humor.”

* And, Glover adds, a sense of humor is important to Deep Purple. “We’re a funny band. We take the music seriously, but we don’t take ourselves seriously. I think every band has its own sense of humor. But we’ve always been a fairly intelligent bunch; our humor is more wit and cleverness rather than loud, dirty jokes.”

* Deep Purple and its tour mate Yes go back a long way, according to Glover. “We worked with them years ago in the 70s. We did some festivals together — one in particular called the Plumpton Jazz and Blues Festival in ’71. There was an argument about who’d be closing the show, and they won the argument and were closing the show. So there was a little niggle, and Ritchie (Blackmore, Purple’s original guitarist) set fire to his amplifiers and made them explode on stage. So (Yes) were delayed a lot and weren’t very happy with that. “We’ve met them since. They’re a great band. We saw (Yes guitarist) Steve Howe a couple years ago. We got on, no hard feelings.”

Deep Purple, Yes and Hannah Wicklund perform at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre, 14900 Metro Parkway, Sterling Heights. 313-471-7000 or 313Presents.com.

Breaking news, deep purple announces 2024 tour with yes. get tickets today.

Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan gives his all onstage.

In 1972, Deep Purple released the iconic “Smoke On The Water.”

Now, 52 years (!) later, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will celebrate their mega-hit on their ‘1 More Time Tour’ with fellow Rock Hall inductees Yes all summer long.

Along the way, Ian Gillan and co. are scheduled to make five New York and New Jersey stops.

First, the heavy hitmakers drop into Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on Friday, Aug. 30.

After that, the London natives swoop into Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on Aug. 31, Wantagh, NY’s Jones Beach Theater on Sept. 1, and Saratoga Springs, NY’s Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Sept. 4.

Deep Purple closes their NY run at Bethel’s Bethel Woods Center For The Arts on Sept. 6.

For fans that can’t wait to rock out to “Hush,” “Highway Star,” “Space Truckin'” — and of course “Smoke On The Water” — tickets for all North American concerts can be picked up as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 12, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Deep Purple new music

Being together for 56 years doesn’t mean Deep Purple doesn’t have more to give to the world.

In 2022, the band reached deep into their archives and dug out “ Extras: The Infinite B Sides and Bonus Songs , ”  which is a must for any Purple superfan.

However, what we found most interesting was the band’s latest record of original music, 2021’s bluesy, New Orleans-y  “Turning To Crime.”

Featuring epic rock (“7 and 7 Is”) as well as lively party startin’ tunes (“Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu”) and covers from B.B. King (“Let the Good Times Roll”) and Cream (“White Room”), the album is certainly a departure from the hard rockers’ heavy fare they’re famous for.

Still, for our money, the best track on the record is the Southern-fried rock and roll number “Oh Well.”

We’ve been listening to it on repeat all day.

You can hear the jubilant  “Turning To Crime” album in its entirety here .

Deep Purple band members

After over 50 years together — they formed in 1968 — the core of Deep Purple remains the same.

Should you attend a show, here’s who you’ll likely see take the stage:

Ian Gillan lead vocals, harmonica, percussion (1969–1973, 1984–1989, 1992–present) Roger Glover bass, keyboards, occasional backing vocals (1969–1973, 1984–present) Ian Paice drums (1968–1976, 1984–present) Don Airey keyboards (2002–present) Simon McBride guitars, backing vocals (2022–present)

This tour is a twofer.

Joining Deep Purple on the road are fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Yes.

The long-running prog band is known for their hits like “Owner of A Lonely Heart,” “Roundabout,” “I’ve Seen All Good People” and many, many more.

If you want to dive into their deep catalog, you can find all of Yes’ music here .

Deep Purple are an English rock band, formed in Hertford, Hertfordshire in 1968, and active since their reformation in 1984.

Over the course of a career that’s lasted almost forty years - and that’s not allowing for an eight-year break after an initial split in 1976 - Deep Purple have cemented their position as one of the most influential rock and roll bands in the history of the genre. Furthermore, they’re considered genuine pioneers of both hard rock and heavy metal after having moved away from initial roots in progressive rock, and have the commercial clout to back up their towering status within the rock community; they’ve sold in excess of one hundred million albums internationally. The current lineup features just one original member, Ian Paice on drums, although frontman Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover both joined the band shortly after they began, in 1969. Steve Morse, on guitar, and Don Airey on keys round out the five-piece as they stand today, and they continue to tour and record; their latest album, “Now What?!”, was released in April of 2013, and flirted with progressive metal.

That album might not have been as successful as the records that defined them back in their seventies heyday - March 1972’s “Machine Head”, which features their signature song “Smoke on the Water”, frequently features on countdowns of the greatest rock records ever - but they still pack out arenas the world over; their status as bona fide rock legends has long since been secure.

Live reviews

Perhaps it’s because their one and only split, in 1984, seems so long ago now, or perhaps because they lacked an iconic character of Ozzy Osbourne or Jimmy Page’s standing, but Deep Purple are the one member of the ‘unholy trinity,’ alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, who seem to have the lowest public profile. Sure, they still tour arenas, but Sabbath have been playing stadiums this summer, and as for Zeppelin, the number of applications for tickets for their one-off reunion at the O2 stretched into seven figures. Quietly, though - as unsuitable a phrasing as that is - the biggest band ever to come out of Hertford are continuing to do quite nicely for themselves. Their most recent UK jaunt had them mixing things up, playing some arenas and some theatres, and doing their best to avoid accusations that they’re trading off of former glories; of the seventeen tracks making the setlist each night, seven were plucked from last year’s 'Now What?!' record. The classics made the cut, too, of course, as did all the trappings of the classic rock show - extensive soloing and plentiful crowd participation included. Stadium tours any time soon? Probably not, but if we’re talking about the preservation of their legacy, Deep Purple are certainly doing it justice.

Whole members of Deep Purple are playing very well ! Roger Clover, Don Airy, Steve Morse , Ian Paice and off course Ian Gillian himself . I was dissopointed not playing "Child in Time" . Everybody was expected this song. I was very happy to see this guys.

One of my favorite leadguitar Ritchie Blackmore was not present. Well Deep Purple , thank you all , to coming to Holland.

I was proud to see you again and my evening was best performance!

Thank you Deep Purple keep at going.

Deep Purple exploded onto the stage at the Fox Theater in Detroit with their opening song,"Highway Star!" From then on they gave a blistering and thunderous performance!

The visual effects and lighting were spectacular! Their stage presence was commanding and presentation very tight and spot on!

I have seen Deep Purple multiple times over the years. I must say this show found them in their finest form!

The crowd was ravenous to eat up every note! Detroit is the best place in the world for a concert!

This tour is title,"The Long Goodbye."

I sincerely hope this isn't so. Hopefully in the future they will tour as,"Hello Again!"

It was my first time seeing Deep Purple and they did not disappoint. The band was extremely tight and witnessing Steve Morse shred the guitar was worth the price of admission alone. They ripped through two hours of classics including a couple of new tunes off their latest album which was just as strong. Don't miss what may be one of your last chances to see these guys in such strong form. At my show in South Florida, Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden came out to see the band and introduced them. Their influence can be heard throughout the Rock world and they should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Besides being a fan of Deep Purple I have to criticize the show. Sorry! Mainly the sound technician did a bad work. Sound was way too loud that it was overlapping. Sometimes it was difficult to recognize the song and hear a melody. Members of the band, the musicians, worked hard and well, unfortunately, Ian Gillan has to retire. It was hard to hear him singing, he often was disappearing from stage. That, to say, in my opinion, he used to be "the Nail" of the shows with his high notes.

I was expecting more pleasant evening from the band I like.

seen DEEP PURPLE with edgar winter warm up, Alice Cooper warm up (why they did this is ridiculous !Deep Purple on a farewell tour played 7 songs off their latest album? they had an organ solo. Ian Gillian spent half the show going bejind the wall probably to get high. no encore song. Alice Cooper should have played the whole 3 hours because he was the best. always a good show. Edgar winter smoked Deep Purple. they need Ritchie blackmore back and david coverdale. Glover and pace the only stars. deep purple needs to retire for good.

Smashing gig!

Suppirt act Cats In Space were a great surprise with their pop rock style that was heavier than expected.

Europe were really good. Joey Tempest was his usual 80s flamboyant self, and the sound was cracking!

Depp Purple were superb. This line-up is tight and settled, with some excellent playing in the original Purple vein. Ian Gillan looked like he'd just wandered in off his sofa, he was so chilled.

All in all, a superb gig that crossed a massive item off my own bucket list

Well it was 47 years since I first saw them and 32 years since I sat in a bin bag in a field at Knebworth. They blew me and my son-in-law away last night.

The new albums songs from Infinite were fantastic especially The Surprising and Birds of Prey interspersed with some old favourites such as Fireball, Perfect Strangers and Smoke on the Water.

Bit disappointed no Highway Star.

As much as I loved it I think it's time to call it quits for playing live - go out on a high with your new album.

I didn't know what to expect. I have seen many bands the last few years, but I had forgotten what good musicians sound like. I remember now after seeing Deep Purple last night. What a fantastic display of musicianship by each member. At some point each of them wee featured and that's why we go! Performers who really love to perform. You don't get that much anymore. And the songs.......well they were awesome as well. I recommend highly if you get the opportunity.

What an incredible show. Starlight Theatre in Kansas City is a beautiful venue and it was a beautiful night. Judas Priest played before Deep Purple and blew the (non-existent) roof off the place. Their experience and chops were on full display. Deep Purple headlined and played lots of the crowd favorites. They may be old and the lineups may have changed, but if you grew up listening to this stuff, don't miss out on seeing them now.

Deep Purple, formed in 1968, is one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal. Their iconic track “Smoke on the Water,” released in 1972 on their groundbreaking “Machine Head” album, tells the story of a fire at the Montreux Casino that nearly derailed their recording session. The song has cemented itself as a defining element of rock history. Listen to it below:

IAN GILLAN, Who Will Celebrate His 79th Birthday Next Week, Says There Are No Plans For DEEP PURPLE To Retire

In a new interview with Ultimate Classic Rock , DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan addressed the name of the band's upcoming tour with YES , "=1 More Time" . Asked how close the end of the road — and, perhaps, DEEP PUPRLE — feels to him, the singer, who will turn 79 next week, responded: "Well, you know what?! It was only recently that I heard somebody mention [the tour name]. I'd never heard that before. I'd never even spoken to anybody about it. No one asked me. That's rubbish. [ Laughs ] That's not the name of the tour. I think the tour is called 'Unleashed' . Not that it matters; it's a DEEP PURPLE tour and we're happy and whatever. But to answer your question: it is what it is. As soon as you start feeling unable to deliver at that level — of course, you adjust, of course, you adapt and make do the best you can. But when the energy level goes, that's time to stop because then it gets embarrassing and nobody wants that. But so far, so good. I think that's a much better title than what you just said. [ Laughs ]"

Last December, DEEP PURPLE drummer Ian Paice , who turned 76 in June, was asked by Zoom when he and his bandmates will eventually retire from performing live. He responded: "We have never planned a date to stop working. We are realists. The guys are getting older, and there's gonna come a point where maybe one or two of us don't want to do it anymore or [it's] not physically possible for them to do it. But we don't think about that. We're still having a great deal of fun. A lot of people still enjoy what we do, and so long as those two things stay in harmony, we'll continue.

"I don't think we'll ever know what the last gig, what the last tour is," he continued. "I think it'll come and just smack us in the face. Unless there's a definite plan, which there isn't, to do something as a final bye-bye, I just think we'll just go, 'Sorry, guys. We're finished. We can't do it anymore. It's been wonderful.' But even then, I think if we stopped touring, there's no reason why we couldn't make more records. That's the easiest thing in the world. All you've got to do is have the ideas. That's the hardest thing in the world. But physically making a record is easy."

Paice added: "Touring only works if you enjoy it. You can't just enjoy the two hours a night when you're playing. You've got to be able to deal with the whole thing. You've got to be able to deal with a ten-hour flight, a hotel which is less than perfect, transportation which goes wrong. You've gotta deal with all that. And if you can, and still enjoy it, then why would you stop something that you got into as a kid 'cause it made you happy? And if it still makes you happy, why would you stop it?"

Paice 's PURPLE bandmate Roger Glover expressed a similar sentiment about the band's final tour in a June 2023 interview with Rock Hard Greece . The bassist, who turned 78 last November, said: "I don't like the idea of announcing the last show: 'And here they are. This is their last show.' I mean, the stress involved in that would be ridiculous. Where would it be? When would it be? For me, the ideal ending for PURPLE is that we just carry on until it stops. No announcement. We're not gonna announce, 'This is the last one.' People would buy tickets: 'Oh, this is the last one.' It's an exercise in making money. It's not very good. I've never liked it. I'd rather go and play and play and play and play, and one day when something happens and one of us drops dead or gets really ill or whatever, [we say], 'Well, that's that.' And leave it at that."

In 2022, DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Don Airey , who turned 76 in June, told Rolling Stone magazine that there is no concrete plan for him and his DEEP PURPLE bandmates to stop playing live shows.

"We started the farewell tour in 2017. It was due to end in 2019," he noted. "But the thing is, when you're a musician in a band, you think you're in control of it, but you're not. The business is running you.

"Of course, there was so much demand for the band to continue from the promoters and agents that we said, 'Okay, we'll do one more year.'"

Regarding when he thinks DEEP PURPLE will finally call it quits, Don said: "The words of T.S. Eliot [the greatest English-language poet of his generation] come to mind: 'This is the way the band ends. Not with a bang, but with a whimper.' I think we won't know it's the last gig. We won't have a clue that this one is going to be the last one. That's how it's going to end. It's going to be no big scenario.

"I like what Buddy Guy said. He said, 'Musicians don't retire. They drop.' You do have thoughts about being in the garden and bouncing the grandchildren on your knee, but it's part of your blood system, playing and touring. It's an addiction. I hope I keep playing for a while yet."

In July 2022, guitarist Steve Morse officially left PURPLE to care for his wife, Janine , who is battling cancer. He has since been replaced by Simon McBride .

DEEP PURPLE 's latest album, "=1" , came out on July 19 via earMUSIC .
