Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Cruising in the Kimberley serves up eye-popping beauty at every turn.

A rarely visited, ancient and pristine coastline, this slice of Western Australia is often referred to as one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s a wonderland of secret waterfalls, rare birds and confetti-like islands.

Accessible by boat from Broome, Wyndham (via Kununurra) Darwin and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula, the epic journey is worth the effort . Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere with butler service or an action-packed activity focused itinerary , there are a bunch of excellent Kimberley cruises out there.

1. The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a custom-built 26-metre luxury catamaran, MV Great Escape , which caters to just 14 lucky guests across seven stylish staterooms.

Choose from three small ships; one 11-day, and two 13-day itineraries to cruise western Australia—home to some of the country’s most extraordinary wonders; many only accessible by sea. Join expert guides and guest lecturers to cruise in true expedition style to offshore coral reefs and remote archipelagos and coastlines that few have the opportunity to visit. These western Australia cruises explore the region’s contrasting coastal palette of rich red sands and turquoise sea, offering memories that will last a lifetime.

The main 13-day Abrolhos Islands & The Coral Coast itinerary operates between Broome and Fremantle, voyaging along most of western Australia for a comprehensive experience. With a fascinating maritime and Indigenous history, this region is layered with stories. The natural coastal reserves harbor abundant birdlife and marine species. A unique highlight is a visit to UNESCO World Heritage Site Shark Bay, where the temperate climate of the south meets the desert climate of the north, resulting in exclusive and abundant wildlife ashore and under the water.

The alternative 11-day Whales & Trails of Western Australia operates round-trip from Fremantle with a mix of hiking, foraging, whale watching, wildflowers in bloom, indigenous culture, art, white-sand beach & a signature winemaker’s dinner at a vineyard.

The alternative 13-day Ningaloo & The Blue Water Wonders of Australia’s West itinerary operates round-trip from Broome, focusing on a shorter section of Australia’s west coast, reaching only as far south as the Ningaloo Reef. These departures offer even more opportunities to snorkel and dive, with unique visits to the incredible Rowley Shoals and Mackerel Islands. Of note, this itinerary has no days at sea and provides time to snorkel and dive at the World-Heritage-listed Ningaloo, while the main itinerary departures only cruise Ningaloo with opportunities to snorkel in nearby bays.

Enjoy authentic Australian hospitality and remote access only a small cruise ship can permit. Choose from departures aboard the 72-guest  Coral Discoverer , 120-guest  Coral Adventurer  or 120-guest  Coral Geographer . Highly informative expedition leaders and guest lecturers maximize the experiences offered on each shore excursion. Each ship comes equipped for exploration with Zodiacs, a glass-bottom boat and Xplorer tender vessel with a platform for easy entry into the water.

Coral Adventurer, Coral Geographer

lunch, dinner

If weather conditions allow, this morning enjoy snorkeling at one of the Pelsaert groups’ outer reefs before a relaxing day at sea cruising from Fremantle toward the Abrolhos Islands.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

No two western Australia cruises are the same. Throughout the expedition, allowances may be made for seasonal variations, weather, tidal conditions and any other event that may affect the operation of the vessel. Below is a selection of the key destinations visited.

The Abrolhos Islands

The Abrolhos Islands consist of 122 islands, clustered into three main groups: the Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert Groups. Lying in the stream of the southward flowing Leeuwin current, the marine environment here is a meeting place for tropical and temperate sea life. Common marine mammals include Australian sea lions and bottlenose dolphins, and over 90 species of seabirds have been identified. The treacherous reefs around these islands have claimed many wrecks over the centuries, the most famous being the Batavia in 1629 — whose Dutch crew swam ashore only to experience a brutal mutiny. The Abrolhos islands offer a near-pristine natural environment with a diverse range of marine and terrestrial fauna and flora. This area also offers a rich history including shipwrecks and remnants of early colonial industries such as guano mining and commercial fishing. The Australian sea lions love to swim and play with snorkelers and divers here.

Pelsaert (Southern) Group

At the Pelsaert (Southern) group, visit Liddon Pearl Farm and Crayfishing operations on Post Office Island. Learn what is involved with growing the pearls, learning the different shells and pearl categories, and how the different types of pearls are set. Also have insights into the renowned cray fishing industry of the island, from the family who has been in the Abrolhos for four generations. Later is the opportunity to snorkel the blue holes from the jetty.

Easter Group

At the Easter Group, visit the Sea Lion colony at Little Sandy Island, home to the largest colony of Sea Lions in the Abrolhos. Later, snorkel the vibrant coral reefs at locations such as Squid Hole, the Anemone Lump or Morley Island. Also enjoy the opportunity to bird watch at Wooded Island. Activities will be subject to weather and tides as this area is known to be very tidal and windy.

Wallabi Group

Today snorkel off picturesque Turtle Bay and take a short walk along the beach where Tamar wallabies, skinks and the endemic Abrolhos dwarf bearded dragons may be seen. Cruise past the Pidgeon islands, the wealthiest of the crayfishing islands. Birdwatch for ospreys, white-bellied sea eagles and Caspian terns amongst other birdlife. Conditions permitting, visit Beacon Island, also known as the Island of Angry Ghosts ,  where 126 men, women and children were massacred by the blood thirsty mutineers of this area over 400 years ago. This is home to fantastic bird life, as well as the Batavia Memorial cairn and the coral pits — still evident from where Jeronimus Cornelisz (the mutiny ring leader) was held prior to his trial and execution.

Shark Bay World Heritage Area

Explore the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, the first location in Western Australia to receive UNESCO World Heritage status, in 1991. This is a region of colorful landscapes, rare flora and fauna, and home to a staggering 35% of all of Australia’s bird species. Explore Francois Peron National Park, named after the naturalist on explorer Nicholas Baudin’s expeditions. Cruise past historic Cape Inscription, the site of Dirk Hartog’s landing in 1616, and time permitting, enjoy a refreshing swim off the sandy remote beach.

Cruising The Ningaloo Coast

The remote and well-hidden Bateman’s Bay, just north of Coral Bay, is a much more remote and untouched landscape in comparison with beautiful sand beaches. Weather permitting, make a short landing on the remote Ningaloo coast between Northwest Cape and Shark Bay, for a swim and a beachcomb.

Exmouth & Cape Range National Park (Ningaloo Reef)

One of the longest and most pristine fringing reefs in the world, Ningaloo Reef has an unusually narrow continental shelf. The deep oceanic waters, reef and coastline communities are close in proximity, resulting in a huge array of significant and healthy marine life coexisting in one area. The Ningaloo Coast is also one of the most important turtle nesting rookeries in the Indian Ocean, with a significant maritime history from explorers, traders, pearl luggers, whaling and fishing. Spend the day at Cape Range National Park with options to snorkel at Turquoise Bay, visit Yardie Creek via a 0.75-mile nature walk, head up to the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse or visit the Ningaloo Center. There will also be some free time to explore Exmouth.

Muiron Islands & Serrurier Island

The Muiron Islands are located approximately 10 nautical miles off the North West Cape. The Islands are well known for their incredible reef, colorful soft corals, an abundance of turtles, schools of fish and even sightings of manta rays! A variety of dive sites are on offer at this destination, including swim-throughs and ledges where nudibranchs, eels and angelfish hide. With fantastic bommies and protected reef, snorkelers will appreciate the variety of soft corals and gorgonians as well the incredible fish life. Birdlife is abundant onshore — see if you can spot wedge-tail shearwaters, roseate terns, osprey and black-shouldered kites (just to name a few).

Serrurier Island is located a further 20 nautical miles northeast of the Muirons. Here, experience great coral competition and seagrass beds that feed the local dugongs. The World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef is the turquoise jewel in the crown of the Western Australian coastline. Spanning nearly 2,000 square miles, this is one of the largest fringing reefs in the world. Its inner and outer reefs create a diverse range of habitats for vibrant corals and more than 500 species of fish. This is also where mega marine life come to feed during their migrations, including humpback whales, giant manta rays and the majestic whale shark. It is also a coastline with a fascinating heritage, where lonely whalers battled it out against the elements. After in-water activities, stretch the legs on a stroll down the beach on these untouched islands.

Montebello Islands

The Montebello Islands, or Montes, are an archipelago of more than 250 limestone islands and islets off the coast of the Pilbara. A delight for birdwatchers, the islands are considered an Important Bird Area, as they support over 1% of the world populations of fairy and roseate terns, as well as sooty oystercatchers. The Montes have an explosive past. Alpha and Trimouille Islands were the site of three British atomic weapons tests in the 1950s. Relics of the military operation can still be found on the islands today. Visit the plinth, which marks Ground Zero at Trimouille Island, now a haven for wildlife, including the rufous hare wallaby. A fascinating maritime history surrounds the Montebello Island. Survivors of the Dutch vessel “ Tryall ” swam here after their ship was wrecked in 1622, therefore being the first Europeans to land on the islands. Spend a full day exploring this island group, including wildlife spotting opportunities and beautiful beach walks. Keep watch for the rare rufous hare wallaby and lagoon rays while exploring amazing vistas.

Dampier Archipelago

Consisting of 42 islands and islets, 25 of which are nature reserves, the iron-red islands of the Dampier Archipelago stand in bright contrast to the turquoise waters which surround them. The archipelago not only offers exceptional natural beauty but significant sites for Aboriginal and European Heritage, many of which are in National Heritage Listed Areas. Named after English explorer William Dampier who first visited the islands aboard the Cygnet in 1699; the islands’ earliest inhabitants were the Yaburara people, as is evidenced by the thousands of rock engravings, shell middens and stone arrangements scattered across the area. There will be ample opportunity to explore the area’s historical and cultural sites before taking to the azure waters for swimming and kayaking. Birdwatchers will have the opportunity to see several species of migratory waders as well as sea eagles and ospreys. With luck, possibly even see the elusive Rothschild’s rock wallaby. **Please note viewing of aboriginal petroglyphs is subject to approval and guidance by traditional owners of the area, and cannot be guaranteed**

Ningaloo & The Bluewater Wonders of Australia's West Itinerary

The Ningaloo & The Bluewater Wonders of Australia’s West cruise operates round-trip from Broome, exploring the extraordinary marine environment, historic islands and striking coastline of this hard-to-reach wilderness region.

Route map of Ningaloo & The Bluewater Wonders of Australia's West cruise, operating round-trip from Broome with visits to Rowley Shoals, Dampier Archipelago, Ningaloo Reef & the islands od Montebello, Mackerel, Serrurier & Muiron.

Coral Discoverer

Rowley Shoals

At the edge of the continental shelf, 170 nautical miles offshore, lie the Rowley Shoals, a chain of three coral atolls including Clerke, Mermaid and Imperieuse Reefs. The shoals, named by Captain Phillip Parker King, offer some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities in the world. Their shallow lagoons are inhabited by myriad coral species and marine life, including giant potato cod, Maori wrasse, at least 233 species of coral and 688 species of fish — many of which are not found on other coral reefs. Diving along the outside edge of the shoals one can view colorful soft corals, hammerheads and pelagic fish. Water clarity here is absolutely unparalleled, making for superb underwater photography opportunities.

Conditions permitting, spend 1-2 days at Clerke and perhaps Mermaid or Imperieuse reefs, with ample time for snorkeling and diving opportunities. With each atoll covering approximately 35 square miles, there will be plenty to see! Guided by the onboard marine biologist, snorkel away the day in the coral gardens of the Aquarium at Clerke Reef, or dive along the sheer vertical walls and through coral canyons. Try a drift snorkel in the channel, or beachcomb on Bedwell Island, keeping an eye out for the red-tailed tropicbird that roosts there.

Pilbara Inshore Islands

The Pilbara inshore islands are made up of 170 islands, islets and rocks between Exmouth Gulf and Cape Preston. These remote islands are an important refuge for threatened species and their surrounding reefs are rarely visited. In addition to the more well known Muiron Islands, possibly also visit Thevenard and Serrurier Islands. At Thevenard Island walk the Eco Trail around the island and snorkel the fringing reefs and bommies from Xplorer. The coral competition at Serrurier Island is fierce, and sea-grass beds feed dugongs and several species of marine turtle.

Spend 2 days exploring this stunning coastline from Exmouth to Coral Bay and its underwater playground. From Exmouth, take a coach tour to discover Cape Range National Park, enjoy a nature walk at Yardie Creek and visit the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse. A visit to the educational Ningaloo Center prepares all for an incredible experience of snorkeling from the beach at Turquoise Bay and a boat charter with a local operator to discover the outer reef, with the opportunity to snorkel with manta rays and turtles. There may be an opportunity for advanced divers to discover the Navy Pier dive, depending on tides. While cruising the Humpback Highway down the coast, enjoy the opportunity to watch the majestic whales breach close by.

Muiron Islands

Located approximately 10 nautical miles off the North West Cape, the waters surrounding the uninhabited Muiron Islands are teeming with marine life. A variety of dive sites are on offer, including swim-throughs and ledges where nudibranchs, eels and angelfish hide. Snorkelers will appreciate the fantastic bommies, protected reefs, variety of soft corals and gorgonians as well the incredible fish life. After in-water activities, stretch the legs on a stroll down the beach on these untouched islands.

Whales & Trails of Western Australia Itinerary

The Whales & Trails of Western Australia cruise operates round-trip from Fremantle, exploring the southwestern coastline with a mix of hiking, whale watching, wildflowers, indigenous culture, white-sand beach and a signature winemaker’s dinner at a vineyard.

Route map of Whales & Trails of Western Australia cruise round-trip from Fremantle with visits to Bunbury, Dunsborough, Hamelin Bay, Augusta, Denmark, Albany, Point Ann, Ravensthorpe, Esperance & Lucky Bay.

Arrive at Fremantle Berth C for boarding at 8:00am, with time to settle into your stateroom before a 9:00am departure. Take the time to become acquainted with all the facilities on board. As dusk falls, join guests and the friendly crew at the captain’s welcome drinks and sit down to the first of many delicious dinners.

Coral Adventurer

Located 110 mile south of Perth, Bunbury is situated at the original mouth of the Preston River. For approximately 45,000 years, the Noongar people, indigenous to the Southwest region, have gathered in this area. Throughout history, Bunbury was shaped by Dutch, French, American and British seafarers, who arrived due to various circumstances such as exploration, trade and settlement aspirations.

Take a guided tour with descendants of the original inhabitants of the Bunbury Geographe area, the Noongar people, along the 3.3-mile Mangrove walk. Learn about the bush foods and medicine used in this area as well as Dreaming stories of the region. This evening, enjoy wine tasting on board while cruising around Cape Naturaliste at sunset.

Hamelin Bay

Hamelin Bay beach was a tiny port that serviced timber mills all over the southwest between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. However, people soon came to realize that the waters were far too difficult to navigate and travel with a plethora of wrecks in this area just off the coast.

This morning, spend time exploring this vast expanse of bright white sand and turquoise waters filled with marine life. The combination of the friendly stingrays, and interesting fish and plant life in the bay make it a great snorkeling spot. After there is the opportunity to walk part of Cape-to-Cape trail to Cozy Corner (3.1 miles–Easy to Moderate) or Deepdene Beach to view the Elephant Rocks (4.9 miles– Moderate to Difficult). With a great biodiversity in the area there will be a plethora of native wildflowers throughout both walks including the chance to see native rose, hovea, old mans beard, pink fairy orchid and more. These trails involve some sand/beach terrain and some uneven, rocky sections.

Denmark (Koorabup)

This morning, arrive in Denmark and take an Xplorer transfer to Madfish Bay, a hidden wonderland of pools and bays in the William Bay National Park. At low tide it is possible to walk directly across to the small island in Madfish Bay, but at high tide the island is completely cut off from the mainland. From here, take a short coach transfer to Ducketts Mill Winery. Established in 1996 by Ross & Dallas Lewis with the first planting of Riesling and Cabernet, Ducketts Mill Winery is housed in a unique pine-slabbed farmhouse. Enjoy a wine flight tasting accompanied by house-made cheeses with platters of local produce as the dedicated team share their knowledge and pairing suggestions.

Point Ann & Ravensthorpe

Today cruise into Point Ann, one of the two places in Australia (the other being Head of the Bight in South Australia), where southern right whales come to calve in large numbers in the calm waters of the beautiful bay. Throughout the morning, anchor in this area and enjoy morning tea on board while keeping eyes on the ocean in hope of spotting these incredible creatures.

This afternoon arrive at Hopetoun to journey through the community art trail at Ravensthorpe. After a short bus ride, explore a section of the trail which was created by local farmers using old machinery and scrap metal to produce large-scale sculptures depicting the region’s diverse range of wildflowers and local surroundings. In the heart of the Western Australian wheatbelt region, this expression of art has transformed the economy of these small towns.

Esperance (Kepa Kurl)

This morning wake up at Esperance in the goldfield’s region of Western Australia. After a short Xplorer ride to Twilight Beach or Blue Haven Beach, explore the Wildflower Ocean Walk with options for varied fitness levels. Enjoy the spectacular Esperance coastline from the main esplanade all the way to Twilight Beach. This headland is home to an abundance of birds, wildlife and wildflowers.

For lunch today enjoy the freshest of fish with locally sourced fish from Esperance served as a classic fish & chips on board. Next visit Lucky Bay in Cape le Grand National Park, voted #1 beach in the world, for a swim and chance to see the local wildlife, including kangaroos.

Albany (Kinjarling)

Western Australia’s oldest colonial settlement lies on the northern shore of Princess Royal Harbor, King George Sound. The area was inhabited by the Mineng Noongar Aboriginal people for some 18,000 years before it was first encountered by Europeans.

Explore the Quaranup Indigenous Walk which follows the paths walked by the Mineng people to Quaranup (Kwooranup–place of brush tail wallaby) with opportunity to see ancient stone structures, waterholes, artifacts, engravings, and flora and fauna. Then travel around the coast of Kinjarling (Albany), to the Quaranup Cultural Site. Walk along the beach or dunes to ancient engravings and tool quarry sites. Tides permitting, there may be a chance to beachcomb and look for shellfish amongst the rocks.

Augusta & Flinders Bay Reserve

This morning arrive in the waters of Flinders Bay where there will be opportunity for whale watching from the Vista Deck. The ship will be passing through Flinders Bay around 6:00am, a great time to for an opportunity to see whales in a location they frequent.

After lunch enjoy a short Xplorer transfer to Flinders Bay Reserve at Augusta for freshly shucked Margaret River Oysters and complimentary wines. After this beachside tasting experience there will be an optional Coastal Walk (1 mile, easy) following the Blackwood River and Augusta coastline . Along this section of the trail, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Flinders Bay and the Great Southern Ocean, and the chance to climb down and explore among the rocky pools and sandy beaches.

Dunsborough (Quedjinup) – Signature Event

The Southwest region of Australia, within which Dunsborough sits, is recognized as one of the oldest continually occupied human habitats anywhere on Earth, with archaeology dating back approximately 40,000 years. Dunsborough itself shares in this history, with multiple sites of Aboriginal importance in and around the town.

This morning take a short coach transfer from Dunsborough to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse to explore the tip of Cape Naturaliste–Kwirreejeenungup (surrounded by ocean on three fronts) and partake in coastal foraging. A local Wadandi (forest people by the sea) guide will join, interpreting the landscape and teaching on how the Noongar seasonal calendar influences the knowledge of food sources available throughout the year. Enjoy morning tea including native food tastings.

Signature Dinner Event at Leeuwin Estate Family-owned Leeuwin Estate is one of five founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia, under the direction of two generations who work with a team of highly skilled winemakers to consistently produce wines ranking alongside the world’s finest. With sweeping views overlooking the majestic karri forest, this evening travel to Leeuwin Estate for a six-course combination of exceptional seasonal West Australian produce, focusing on flavor, texture and aromas, with current Leeuwin Estate wines.

Dunsborough (Quedjinup)

After a relaxing morning on board, spend the afternoon at Ambergate Reserve, a 185-acre regional park which protects the remnants of scrubland and woodlands once common along the coastal plains of Busselton. Over 360 plant species have been recorded here, from tall trees and shrubs such as marri, jarrah, peppermints and banksia, to creepers and ground covers–and 26 species of orchid. Many animal species also inhabit the reserve, including kangaroos, quendas, brush-tailed possums, wallabies and echidnas. Plus, an enormous variety of birds including tree martins, rainbow bee-eaters, falcons and tawny frogmouths.

Alternatively, there will be the opportunity to explore the town of Dunsborough or take a stroll along the coastal walk from Geographe Bay to Meelup (2.5 miles one way, Easy) with the opportunity to spot many native wildflowers.

This morning arrive into the Port of Fremantle, C Berth, at 7:00am before disembarking at 8:00am. A post-cruise transfer to the airport or central business district hotels of Fremantle and Perth is included.

PROMENADE DECK STATEROOM

Board Coral Adventurer at 4:00pm at Fremantle Port and enjoy time to settle into your stateroom before our 5:00pm departure. As dusk falls, meet your fellow travelers and crew for the Captain’s Welcome Drinks.

Located 175 kilometers south of Perth, Bunbury is situated at the original mouth of the Preston River. For approximately 45,000 years, the Noongar people, indigenous to the Southwest region, have gathered in this area, which served as a seasonal meeting place abundant with food sources and ceremonial sites. Throughout history, Bunbury was shaped by Dutch, French, American, and British seafarers, who arrived due to various circumstances such as exploration, trade, and settlement aspirations. In 1800, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte dispatched the scientific expedition led by Nicolas Baudin to the southern land. The crew of Le Geographe extensively explored the estuary, mapping the southwest and collecting flora and fauna specimens. They named the area Port Leschenault, a name later replaced by the British with the townsite’s current name, Bunbury. Today we will take a guided tour with descendants of the original inhabitants of the Bunbury Geographe area, the Noongar people, along the 5.3km Mangrove walk. Learn about the bush foods and medicine used in this area as well as Dreaming stories of the region. This evening enjoy wine tasting from the Bridge Deck Lounge as we cruise around Cape Naturaliste at sunset.

Hamelin Bay beach was a tiny port that serviced timber mills all over the southwest between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. However, people soon came to realise that the waters were far too difficult to navigate and travel with a plethora of wrecks in this area just off the coast. This morning we will spend time exploring this vast expanse of bright white sand and turquoise waters filled with marine life. The combination of the friendly stingrays, and interesting fish and plant life in the bay make it a great snorkeling spot. After our morning swim or snorkel there is the opportunity to walk part of Cape-to-Cape trail to Cosy Corner (5km – Easy to Moderate) or Deepdene Beach to view the Elephant Rocks (8km – Moderate to Difficult). With a great biodiversity in the area there will be a plethora of native wildflowers throughout both walks including the chance to see native rose, hovea, old mans beard, pink fairy orchid and more. These trails involve some sand/beach terrain and some uneven, rocky sections.

This morning we will arrive in Denmark and begin our day with an Xplorer transfer to Madfish Bay, a hidden wonderland of pools and bays in the William Bay National Park. At low tide it is possible to walk directly across to the small island in Madfish Bay, but at high tide the island is completely cut off from the mainland. From here we will take a short coach transfer to Ducketts Mill Winery.

Today we cruise into Point Ann, one of the two places in Australia (the other being Head of the Bight in South Australia), where southern right whales come to calve in large numbers in the calm waters of the beautiful bay. Throughout the morning we will anchor in this area and enjoy morning tea onboard as we keep our eyes on the ocean in hope of spotting these incredible creatures. This afternoon we will arrive at Hopetoun to journey through the community art trail at Ravensthorpe. After a short bus ride, we will explore a section of the trail which was created by local farmers using old machinery and scrap metal to produce large scale sculptures depicting the region’s diverse range of wildflowers and local surroundings. In the heart of the Western Australian wheatbelt region, this expression of art has transformed the economy of these small towns.

This morning we will wake up at Esperance in the goldfield’s region of Western Australia. After a short Xplorer ride to Twilight Beach or Blue Haven Beach we will explore the Wildflower Ocean Walk with options for varied fitness levels. Enjoy the spectacular Esperance coastline from the main esplanade all the way to Twilight Beach. This headland is home to an abundance of birds, wildlife, and wildflowers. For lunch today we will enjoy the freshest of fish with locally sourced fish from Esperance served as a classic fish & chips onboard. Following our delicious lunch we will visit Lucky Bay in Cape le Grand National Park, voted #1 beach in the world, for a swim and chance to see the local wildlife, including Kangaroos.

Western Australia’s oldest colonial settlement lies on the northern shore of Princess Royal Harbour, King George Sound. The area was inhabited by the Mineng Noongar Aboriginal people for some 18,000 years before it was first encountered by Europeans. During the summer they lived along the coast, where they caught fish with stone traps in the naturally broad, deep, sheltered harbour, and in winter they moved inland. The harbour was visited and charted by George Vancouver in 1791. In 1826, the first European settlement in the state, a penal colony called Frederickstown was established. Today we will explore the Quaranup Indigenous Walk which follows the paths walked by the Mineng people to Quaranup (Kwooranup – place of brush tail wallaby) with opportunity to see ancient stone structures, waterholes, artefacts, engravings and flora and fauna. We will then travel around the coast of Kinjarling (Albany), to the Quaranup Cultural Site. Walk along the beach or dunes to ancient engravings and tool quarry sites. Tides permitting, there may be a chance to beachcomb and look for shellfish amongst the rocks.

This morning we arrive in the waters of Flinders Bay where there will be opportunity for whale watching from the Vista Deck. Coral Adventurer will be passing through Flinders Bay around 6am, a great time to for an opportunity to see whales in a location they frequent. After lunch enjoy a short Xplorer transfer to Flinders Bay Reserve at Augusta where we will enjoy freshly shucked Margaret River Oysters and complimentary wines. After our beachside tasting experience there will be an optional Coastal Walk (1.7km easy) following the Blackwood River and Augusta coastline. Along this section of the trail, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Flinders Bay and the Great Southern Ocean, and the chance to climb down and explore among the rocky pools and sandy beaches.

The Southwest region of Australia, within which Dunsborough sits, is recognised as one of the oldest continually occupied human habitats anywhere on Earth, with archaeology dating back approximately 40,000 years. Dunsborough itself shares in this history, with multiple sites of Aboriginal importance in and around the town. Prior to European colonisation, several distinct tribes inhabited the land and utilised the waters around Dunsborough. Those living on the coast were called Wardandi (sea people). These Indigenous peoples referred to Dunsborough by the name of Quedjinup, which means “Place of Women”. This morning we will take a short coach transfer from Dunsborough to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, where we will explore the tip of Cape Naturaliste – Kwirreejeenungup (surrounded by ocean on three fronts) and partake in coastal foraging. A local Wadandi (forest people by the sea) guide will join us, interpreting the landscape and teaching us how the Noongar seasonal calendar influences the knowledge of food sources available throughout the year. Leeuwin Estate combines fine wine and food in a picturesque setting in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. With sweeping views overlooking the majestic karri forest, this evening we will travel to Leeuwin Estate for a six-course combination of exceptional seasonal West Australian produce, focusing on flavour, texture, and aromas, with current Leeuwin Estate wines.

After a relaxing morning onboard we will spend the afternoon at Ambergate Reserve, a 75-hectare regional park which protects the remnants of scrubland and woodlands once common along the coastal plains of Busselton. Over 360 plant species have been recorded here, from tall trees and shrubs such as marri, jarrah, peppermints, banksia, to creepers and ground covers – and 26 species of orchid. Many animal species also inhabit the reserve, including kangaroos, quendas, brush-tailed possums, wallabies, and echidnas. Plus, an enormous variety of birds including tree martins, rainbow bee-eaters, falcons and tawny frogmouths. Alternatively, there will be the opportunity to explore the town of Dunsborough or take a stroll along the coastal walk from Geographe Bay to Meelup (4km one way, Easy) with the opportunity to spot many native wildflowers.

This morning we arrive into the Port of Fremantle, C Berth, at 7:00am before disembarking at 8:00am. There will be post cruise transfers provided to the airport and CBD of Fremantle and Perth.

Adventure Cruises in Australia

Australia's vast size and diversity means exploring this amazing country is very well suited to a multi-day adventure cruise.

A large and incredibly diverse country, Australia small ship cruises offer an ideal way to enjoy a variety of spectacular sights, see native wildlife, learn about the country’s history and culture, and take part in a number of activities. Whether you’re a photography junkie, a nature lover, a culture vulture, a thrill seeker, or someone who just loves experiencing new places, the varied cruises around Australia are sure to tick all your boxes for a great vacation to remember. Covering more than 7.6 million square km (2.0 million square miles), Australia is famous for its unique wildlife, including the kangaroo, wallaby, koala, dingo, emu, and crocodile.

Australia also has a generally laid-back atmosphere, glorious beaches, the remote outback, and of course its Aboriginal culture. Historically the home of native Aboriginal groups, Australia was first discovered by Europeans in the 1600s. Penal colonies, gold rushes, mining opportunities, and farming industries led to more and more outsiders heading to Australia. Today a popular tourist destination for people from all four corners of the globe, see what makes Australia so unique onboard an Australia adventure cruise.

Best Australian adventure cruises and areas to visit

Western Australia - A cruise around the Kimberley will reveal stunning waterfalls, ancient rock art, and scenic rivers, as well as including possible activities such as fishing, helicopter rides, swimming at the croc-free Surveyors Creek, and hiking.

Discover Rowley Shoals , a coral reef off the coast of Broome and in the Timor Sea. Teeming with marine life, the area is known for offering some of the best diving in all of Australia. It’s also a top spot for deep-sea fishing.

Enjoy awesome wildlife encounters at the Ningaloo Reef, known for its feeding whale sharks. The beaches are breeding areas for sea turtles and the water system supports a huge aquatic population, made up of fish, corals, birds, molluscs, and more. Migrating dolphins, whales, manta rays, and dugongs pass through the reef in the winter months.

The Abrolhos Islands , located in the Indian Ocean, contains a lot of protected conservation areas. A major place for seabird breeding and home to an array of life, both on land and in the water, the islands are also known for rock lobster fishing. Several shipwrecks lie at the bottom of the sea.

South Australia - Boasting an active cafe culture, great shopping, beaches, and architecture, and a lively night scene, did you know that Adelaide was never used as a convict settlement? It was always populated by free people. Surrounded by glorious wine regions, sample delectable local wines and admire the lush scenery of the famous Barossa Valley.

Kangaroo Island is another highlight of an Australian cruise, home to an abundance of interesting flora and fauna and boasting sublime beaches and craggy cliffs. Discover charming fishing villages and remote sandy coves, and enjoy activities such as fishing, snorkelling, and sunbathing. Cage diving with sharks is also popular with many guests.

Enjoy scenic hiking in Coffin Bay, and sink your teeth into some locally farmed oysters. Port Lincoln, on the other hand, is known for its tuna.

Great Barrier Reef - One of the world’s most desired destinations, especially for fans of underwater discovery, the expansive Great Barrier Reef is the biggest coral reef system on the planet. A cruise around the Great Barrier Reef takes in various stunning islands, all offering differing delights, as well as letting you explore the wildlife-rich waters.

Lizard Island is a tropical haven, home to, as the name suggests, an abundance of lizards. A perfect place for snorkelling, you can also enjoy pristine sandy beaches. The long and thin Ribbon Reefs can only be accessed onboard an Australian cruise. Underwater photographers will love diving in the calm and clear waters.

Hinchinbrook Island is home to Australia’s biggest island national park. It is also the largest island in the Great Barrier Reef. Rugged with towering mountains, it is inhabited by numerous endangered species. On Dunk Island you can discover the dense rainforest and magnificent beaches, whilst Nathan Reef boasts colourful coral gardens.

Tasmania - An island state, highlights of cruises to Tasmania include the state capital of Hobart, Port Davey, a rugged coastal wilderness with plenty of active adventures, and Port Arthur, a former convict settlement that is steeped in history. The shallow Bathurst Harbour, with its reddish brown waters, is another scenic spot that can only be reached by boat.

Admire the towering pink granite peaks of Freycinet National Park, relax on gorgeous white sandy beaches, explore hidden coves, and observe an assortment of local wildlife. Keen ornithologists will be particularly impressed. A cruise lets you take in the best of the wildlife and scenery with complete convenience.

Sydney - Cruise through Sydney Harbour, feasting your eyes on the iconic sights of Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, often referred to as the Coathanger. A trip along Hawkesbury River lets you see plenty of fish and sharks, with aquatic life including great white sharks, marlin, bull sharks, whales, octopus, turtles, and crabs. The lands alongside the river were once inhabited by different Aboriginal groups.

Cape York and Arnhem Land - A trip around Cape York and Arnhem Land in northern Australia lets you traverse in the wake of Captain Cook, creating your own adventures and discoveries as you gaze upon stunning landscapes, meet local Aboriginal groups, spot diverse nature and wildlife, and see splendid artworks.

Learn more about the Tiwi culture, visit the Great Barrier Reef’s Lizard Island and watch a plethora of lizards scuttling across the land, stand at the most northern point of all of Australia at Cape York, and learn about trade from times gone by.

Best time to cruise in Australia

The best time to visit Australia depends on what part of the country to plan to explore and what your main interests are. An Australia cruise is a fantastic experience at any time of the year, though some periods are often more popular, for various reasons, than others.

If you are planning to explore the Great Barrier Reef, the best time to visit is between June and November. The weather is pleasant and there is usually good visibility in the waters. The May to October dry season is the best time to visit destinations in Western Australia, such as the Kimberley and Abrolhos Islands. March to June is the best time, however, to see whale sharks around the Ningaloo Reef. December to February is the warmest time in Sydney, attracting large numbers of visitors. Booking an Australian cruise to and around Sydney in the shoulder seasons can, however, yield savings whilst still being in a period of good weather. From June to August is Tasmania’s winter; expect cold conditions with rain and snow. Many people choose to visit Tasmania between spring and autumn for the warmer weather.

How to get to Australia

Australia is a huge country, with the busiest airports located Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. There are numerous airports all around the country though, so getting around by air is easy. Do keep in mind, however, that it takes around 4+ hours to fly the width of the country; you may want to choose a primary arrival airport relatively close to your cruise departure point.

Where do Australia cruises depart from?

There are airports within easy reach of all departure points for cruises in Australia. Shuttle services may be available between airports and ports, though taxis are always widely available too. Cruise departure points include Perth, served by Perth Airport (PER), Broome, served by Broome International Airport (BME), Sydney, connected by Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport (SYD), Adelaide, with Adelaide Airport (ADL), Cairns, home to Cairns Airport (CNS), Tasmania’s Hobart, connected by Hobart International Airport (HBE), and Darwin, linked by Darwin International Airport (DRW).

Australia Cruise Tips

  • Plan your Australia cruise in plenty of time to ensure availability for your desired dates and to prevent potential problems with availability of connecting flights etc.
  • It is best to plan to arrive in Australia at least a couple of days before your cruise departure in case of any flight delays or other holdups.
  • With so many excellent Australia cruises to choose between, carefully consider your options to ensure that you book the trip that is best suited to your interests. Consider aspects such as cultural visits, wildlife encounters, excursions, and the activities offered.
  • Check the weather for the time of year and area where you want to cruise, and don’t leave any of the essentials at home. If visiting in the summer, don’t forget sunglasses, suncream, and a hat. If your cruise will be during the cooler months, pack plenty of warm clothes and dress in layers.
  • Snorkelling gear is usually offered onboard (when applicable), but you may want to consider taking your on for a comfortable fit.
  • Don’t forget your hiking boots/shoes if you plan on joining hikes and guided walks.
  • With so many excellent photograph opportunities, keep your camera batteries fully charged and carry spare batteries and a spare memory card.
  • Change your money into Australian dollars, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned return date, and, if you need a visa for Australia, make sure you obtain all necessary paperwork well in advance of your trip.

Why you should consider a small ship for your next cruise vacation.

Smaller cruise ships can provide a more intimate, enjoyable experience on a cruise vacation.

When researching a cruise vacation, the massive, feature-packed ships often take center stage in advertising and promotions. However, smaller vessels can offer a more relaxed atmosphere, closer connections with fellow guests, and a deeper immersion in your destinations, harking back to the golden era of cruising.

You might associate smaller ships with luxury cruise lines, and while it's true that many high-end lines do operate smaller vessels, you can still find smaller ships within mainstream cruise lines.

For example, while Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas captures attention with its capacity of nearly 10,000 passengers and crew, the fleet also includes much smaller vessels. Rhapsody of the Seas and other Vision-class ships accommodate less than a third of that number.

Similarly, Britain’s P&O Cruises is famous for its family-friendly mega-ships like Arvia and Iona , each accommodating over 5,000 passengers. However, the line also offers the smaller, adult-only ships Arcadia and Aurora , with the latter hosting fewer than 2,000 guests.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, another British operator, specializes in more traditional cruising on ships that carry no more than 1,300 passengers. In Norway, Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages offer coastal cruises on smaller ships , with most carrying less than 500 passengers.

Harris will propose $50,000 small business tax deduction for startup expenses: here’s what to know, u.s. open: frances tiafoe sets up all-american semifinal against taylor fritz.

Although you may have to look a little harder to find them, value deals on smaller ships are available. With that in mind, here are five important reasons why choosing a small ship for your next cruise vacation could offer a more rewarding and unique experience.

Intriguing Itineraries

Small ships have the distinct advantage of accessing ports that larger vessels simply can’t reach. This opens up a world of unique and off-the-beaten-path itineraries, giving passengers the opportunity to explore destinations that are less impacted by mass tourism.

Smaller ships can get under Norway's Hardanger Bridge to reach the interesting ports Eidfjord and ... [+] Ulvik.

For example, while larger ships cruising through the Norwegian fjords can dock at popular spots like Flåm and Geiranger, these charming destinations can quickly become overcrowded with passengers from just one large cruise ship.

Smaller ships can navigate under the Hardanger Bridge , for example, to reach more secluded ports like Eidfjord and Ulvik. These picturesque villages offer an authentic experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty and culture of the region without the distraction of large crowds.

Intimate Onboard Experience

With fewer passengers, these ships naturally foster a closer, more community-oriented environment. It’s easier to strike up conversations with fellow travelers, form lasting connections, and enjoy more attentive service from the crew.

This smaller scale typically also means fewer lines, less waiting, and a greater sense of space. Whether you’re dining, participating in onboard activities, or simply relaxing on deck, the camaraderie on smaller ships can make your journey feel more like an exclusive getaway rather than the bustling atmosphere of a large, crowded resort.

Less Stress

A smaller ship naturally means fewer choices, which might seem like a downside, but it often results in a more relaxed vacation. Although smaller ships lack some of the incredible attractions of modern ships, they offer a more streamlined experience.

You won’t spend your time overwhelmed by endless options or rushing across massive decks to get to the start of an activity.

Instead, everything is conveniently accessible, from dining to entertainment, ensuring you can spend more time enjoying your cruise and less time navigating the ship. Plus, with fewer passengers, there’s a better chance of snagging a seat at shows or getting that perfect spot on the deck for the sailaway.

While it's not a guarantee, smaller ships tend to attract fewer families, leading to a generally quieter atmosphere. On larger vessels, the pool deck can sometimes turn into a lively, bustling scene with loud music and energetic activities, often aimed at children and young people.

In contrast, even when children are onboard a smaller ship, the overall ambiance is typically calmer and more relaxed, allowing you to unwind and enjoy a calmer cruise vacation.

More Ocean Views

Taking breakfast on the balcony or enjoying a sunset drink with the sea as a backdrop is often an integral part of any cruise vacation.

The stacked aft decks of Fred Olsen's Balmoral offer guests lots of space for viewing landscapes or ... [+] wildlife during a cruise.

While older ships may lack the abundance of balcony cabins found on newer vessels, they offer something equally special: expansive outdoor deck spaces.

Classic ship designs often feature wide promenade decks and stacked outdoor aft decks, providing multiple levels of stunning ocean views.

These elements not only enhance your scenic enjoyment but also evoke the charm and nostalgia of the golden age of cruising, allowing you to experience the romance of the sea in a way that modern mega-ships often can't replicate.

Fewer Upsells

Another perk of small ships is the reduced emphasis on upselling. With fewer specialty restaurants and additional amenities onboard, the focus tends to be more on the overall experience rather than constant sales pitches.

While you might still be offered beverage packages, specialty dining, or other extras, the pressure to upgrade is noticeably less intense compared to larger ships, where upselling is often a key part of the business model of cruising at scale.

This more straightforward approach allows you to fully enjoy what’s included in your cruise without feeling pressured to spend more.

Australia welcomes 62 cruise ships for 2024-2025 summer season

CruiseMapper logo

62 cruise ships are scheduled to visit Australia during the 2024-2025 summer season, a slight decrease from the 70 ships last year. However, the number of port calls is expected to rise by 3%, reaching a total of 1904, which presents significant tourism opportunities for local communities, according to Joel Katz, Managing Director of Cruise Lines International Association Australasia/CLIA Australasia.

Notably, new arrivals this season include Silversea ’s ship Silver Nova , NCL ’s ship Norwegian Sun , and Cunard ’s newest ship Queen Anne , all of which will make their maiden visits in November, December, and February, respectively.

In January, Ponant 's Paspaley Pearl will begin its inaugural season north of Australia before cruising the Kimberley region.

A total of 25 cruise lines/brands will operate in Australian waters between October and April, offering various itineraries:

Azamara Pursuit will arrive in Geraldton in mid-December, continuing to sail along the Great Australian Bight with stops in Albany , Esperance , and Kangaroo Island before heading to New Zealand. The ship will be in Sydney Harbour during the New Year and will return to Australia before departing for Hong Kong in late February. Azamara Onward will also sail in Australian and New Zealand waters from mid-February as part of a world cruise, with both ships making a joint entrance into Sydney Harbour on February 20.

Cunard will celebrate 100 years of sailing to Australia this summer. Queen Elizabeth will arrive in October for a home-porting season from Sydney, featuring the third edition of the ‘Great Australian Culinary Voyage’ and the inaugural ‘Australian Literature Festival at Sea.’ In February, Queen Anne will make her maiden voyage to Australia as part of a world cruise.

Heritage Expeditions, New Zealand’s only family-owned and operated expedition cruise company, will celebrate its 40th anniversary with exclusive voyages to Antarctica aboard the 140-passenger Heritage Adventurer .

Holland America Line ’s Westerdam will embark on a 35-day circumnavigation of Australia, departing Sydney on November 17.

Oceania Cruises ’ Insignia , Regatta , and Nautica will all be present in local waters this summer.

P&O Cruises Australia will undergo a transition as Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter join the Carnival fleet in March.

Princess Cruises ’ Crown Princess is set to embark on its inaugural 113-night world voyage from Sydney in June.

Viking 's Viking Venus will offer a 31-night ‘Grand Australia Circumnavigation’ departing from Sydney on January 20.
