Who is Big Blue Cover?

What are my cover options.

  • What's covered under my policy?

What is my excess?

What is the claims process.

Going on holiday can be one of the most magical things you can do, but sometimes it doesn’t quite go to plan, so you’ll want to make sure you have the right cover in place.

We’ve analysed the cover from Big Blue travel insurance to help you decide if it offers what you need.

Big Blue Cover is part of ROCK Insurance Group. The group has provided insurance to over a million customers, and specialises in providing cheap travel insurance with a range of benefits.

Who underwrites Big BlueCover's insurance policies?

Big Blue Cover provides a range of travel insurance policies, as well as optional extras, so you can tailor your policy if you need to.

  • Single Trip
  • Annual Multi-trip
  • Optional extras

Features of the policy include:

  • Cover from 2 days to 12 months
  • Wide range of sporting activities covered as standard
  • Trips to UK, Europe and Worldwide covered
  • Cover for as many trips up to 31 days long in a year as you like
  • Redundancy cover as standard
  • Wide range of sporting activities covered
  • Excess waiver
  • Cruise cover
  • Special sports cover
  • Winter sports cover
  • Business cover
  • Terrorism cover
  • Gadget cover

What’s covered under my policy?

Big Blue offers three levels of cover: Economy, Standard and Premier. Below we have listed what’s covered as standard under a single trip policy. As you would expect, policy payout amounts tend to increase as you move from Economy to Premier cover.

  • Cancellation and curtailment
  • Emergency medical and repatriation expenses
  • Dental emergency
  • Hospital benefit
  • Personal possessions and baggage
  • Personal money
  • Travel delay on the outward journey
  • Loss of passport
  • Missed departure on the outward journey
  • Personal accident
  • Personal liability
  • Legal expenses

An excess is the amount of money you contribute to each claim you make before Big Blue will pay out.

The amount of excess you have to pay will depend on which level of cover you have, and the nature of your claim. Check your policy schedule, where your excess details will be shown in detail.

If you require emergency medical assistance while on holiday, call Global Response on +44(0)343 658 0342 or +44(0)1293 652 842 and quote your policy number. You must contact Global Response before incurring costs above £500. The lines are open every day, around the clock.

To make a claim on return from your holiday, contact Global Response by calling +44(0)343 658 0345, or email [email protected]

For contact information to claim on your optional gadget or vehicle excess cover, see your policy document.

Appalling rip off from CDW

took out cdw car waiver insurance in 2019. This apparently has been automatically renewed on 22/8/2020. Not a single communication, prior notice or notification. Simply an email informing me that my card had been charged. Appalling and disgusting behaviour - AVOID (Note offices shut on Saturday & Sunday)

worst company to deal with

took out holiday insurance in november 2019 for a holiday in june 2020. i contacted them several times in march to see where i stood if the hoilday was cancelled , they never answered my e mail . When it was confirmed that the holiday was cancelled i contacted them again, they then could not find details of my insurance , i had to send them a photo of my policy . one e mail then said i had 12 months to supply them with a new travel date , which i did , then another e mail offered me 25% back of the price of my policy , which i refused .i'm still in fighting for a full refund or for them to give me a new policy with a change in date. do not use the company , i hate to think what would happen if i had to put a claim in

Terrible insurane company.Avoid.

Tried to claim for a holiday which was cancelled due to the covid19 outbreak in France. Have been told I don't have a claim as they don't cover any cancellation due to government advice. Absolute joke of a company. Do not buy their crap insurance.

Robbing so and so's

I will never ever use this company again. Had insurance for a package holiday to Turkey with Jet2 that was cancelled by the operator due to Corona Virus. A full refund was sorted with a 1 minute phone call for the holiday. Tried to reclaim my Bigbluecover payment for insurance that could not be used due cancellation. Their answer was that because I had taken the insurance out over 14 days previously (cooling off period) then I would be only entitled to 75% refund plus a £6 admin charge. So in other words it has cost me £16 for an insurance policy I could not use. I go on holiday 3 times a year and can assure you I will never use this company again. I will also tell as many colleagues as I can not to use these shysters

Took out a policy with this company

Took out a policy with this company. Due to CO-VID we didn’t travel that was Apr 20. I’ve just finally been able to contact the company and been informed, I was out of 14 day cooling period and can only have half of the amount I paid for my policy. It’s now October. If you are thinking of holiday insurance DON’T go near this company as your in for a whole life of pain. I also think money supermarket should remove this bogus company from its website.

Sharp practice on multi-trip cover

We booked a multi-trip annual travel policy with this lot for my wife (who has a medical condition) and me. They issued the policy (with a generous extra premium for a cured cancer 7 years post-treatment). In between our first trip on the policy and the planned second, she developed an unrelated condition, again highly unlikely to cause a problem on a 2 week trip to Spain. I called Big Blue as per terms of the policy, and was told they would not offer cover for either the new OR the original condition on the policy. Only after 15 minutes of argument would they agree to give any refund on the policy despite the fact we had taken it out in good faith and followed the policy wording to the letter. Bunch of crooks. Don’t touch them with a bargepole.

Would have given no stars if I could

Would have given no stars if I could. Lost my holiday due to Thomas Cook fiasco. Big blue and their partner company rock insurance didn't want to know. No "good will" with this lot. Pay that little bit more with someone else for peace of mind and a better customer service experience. BBI138075

Booked holiday insurance through this company and will never use again. My holiday was cancelled due to Covid 19, i contacted them to ask to move insurance to another date or a refund and was denied both requests. Another money grabbing firm that does not think of its customers.

Terrible experience

I had my holiday cancelled due to coronavirus and transferred the holiday to next year. I tried to contact Bigblue to transfer my insurance to next yearbut with out success. I telephoned to hear a message to use the help section on their website to use the help section as they were not taking calls so I tried the website to find it was not working either. I have sent them e-mails both to their admin and cancellation departments but they heve not even had the decency to reply.I paid £152 for this insurance and wouldn,t mind paying extra to transfer to next year but they cannot even give me this option.I have used them in the past but will not be doing so in the future and will urge my friends on trip advisor to do the same.

Terrible company

Terrible company. please do not go on holiday thinking that everything will be ok if you need to claim on your insurance. After a car accident we were advised to do one thing and everything would be taken care of but that did not happen. Pay a little bit more and go with somebody else. After 18 months of being fobbed off, being asked the same questions then getting no response I had to give up. Trust me one star is too good for this lot.

Date of experience : July 09, 2020

Took 2 months to settle after accident, charged me excess twice and refused to pay many costs

I had an accident whilst on holiday in Dubai that wasn't my fault that resulted in fractures to my ankle, foot and a torn ligament. I am still in a cast boot 8 weeks on and my business has suffered big losses as I cant do my role. Big blue refused to pay many of the out of pocket expenses I incurred, all they would cover was the cost of the medical treatment minus the £99 excess. Also my varifocal glasses were smashed so I had to buy replacement ones, however they will not pay the full cost of my glasses, have taken money off for wear and tear and also taken the excess of £99 off me again, so i have paid this excess twice, totalling £198! Apparently I can't claim for personal accident as I am not dead and have not lost a limb!?! Two months on and I am still in a cast boot, my business has lost loads of revenue and I am still in much pain. It has also taken them 2 months to settle this claim. Dreadful service, won't buy insurance from them again

Date of experience : January 23, 2020

Very poor service.

My holiday got cancelled by holiday company due to coronavirus. From early May tried by phone and e-mail contacting this company to see if new dates could be changed to no avail. Eventually contacted financial ombudsmen yesterday and coincidently they contacted me this morning. Have now changed dates at no cost subject to getting confirmation from them. If you are having problems with this company, make your complaint official to them and if no response of satisfaction to to the ombudsman.

Date of experience : June 16, 2020

Report them to the Ombudsman!

Report them to the Ombudsman! Shocking service, I rang them because I just wanted to find out if I was covered for a trip in the summer which looks like it will more than certainly be cancelled. The girl on the phone just recited the terms and conditions, which even she admitted didn't say I wasn't covered. She said I would have to talk to the underwriters Reactive Claims to find out. I asked if she could transfer me to them and she said okay - to which once I was transfered the message said they were closed due to Government advice on the Coronavirus. The girl must have known they were closed but transfered me anyway - thanks! No way to get hold of anyone, they're (BigBlue) ignoring e-mails. They'll be out of business soon, but I'm sure that like a phoenix from the flames they'll be back - after all, the money they're taking off you isn't being used for insurance. What a waste of time

Date of experience : April 15, 2020

They just don't pay out

They just don't pay out. They use an external claim company - Reactive Claims. After years of paying for unused insurance, I have had two claims close together (Both pre-Covid). Last summer I had to return home on the first flight available as my wife had become ill. They only pay for the cheap unused flight not the expensive emergency one, so with the excess it wasn't worth claiming. In early February this year, I went to Iceland and before I had landed a notification went out that all flights on the Friday (my return date) were cancelled because of an imminent storm. I had to make a quick call, as flights were disappearing fast, to go home early or late. Flew home a day early so wasted accomodation for which they cover you. They won't pay out, saying I wasn't delayed enough. I was still checked in for my original flight and the notifications I got told me it would have departed nearly 48 hours later than planned. Whatever choice I made would have been costly and in fact the one I made was the cheaper option. Begs the question, should we even bother with travel insurance.

Corona virus has cancelled my holiday

Corona virus has cancelled my holiday. I cant seem to change my insurance to new dates. I've emailed big blue but heard nothing. Jet 2 have been great, car parking company have been great but big blue are garbage. Never again .

Does what they say on the tin

Honestly don't get the bad reviews on here. Had the requirement (first time in a decade really) to claim on a car insurance excess cover policy with them. Spoke with them immediately and they advised it'd take around 8 weeks to settle. Fair enough, it's a little bit of time, but not unreasonable. Once I arrived home, I gathered the docs and photos they needed and sent them through. Little bit of frustration as they needed to have every attachment named correctly. Nothing to onerous there. Few weeks later I got an email reminding me to submit my credit card statement to evidence that I'd paid X amount to the car hire company. Again a tad annoying they need a full statement, not a screenshot. Still, it wasn't unexpected. Once my full statement arrived, sent it through (remembering to name it correctly) and waited a week. Have them a quick call to make sure they didn't need anything else which they confirmed they didn't. Lady advised it would be decided within the next few days. Few days later I have an email saying claim approved and settled. Money to be in my account within the week. Set your expectations at the start, 6-8 weeks and provide everything they ask for. Cannot fault them. I imagine in summer they get busy, but again, set your expectations right to begin with and you will be fine. Great company and everyone was nice and pleasant to deal with.
